Testimonials

"I cannot say enough wonderful things about this company. Honestly, Dervin (the owner of the company) and his group of drivers and tour guides were the best part about our trip to Costa Rica. They were very knowledgeable about the area, and very professional, but also super friendly and fun. They all went out of their way to make sure that we were taken care of , safe, and that we were happy with our experiences. I will absolutely use Yellowfin every time I visit Costa Rica. Thank you !!" Andi Reden

"My family of four, along with my sister and her family and our parents stayed at the Villa Corazon del Mar this summer for a week. We were greeted at the airport by Greavam. He and Pepe brought all twelve of us to eat and to the grocery store prior to getting to the villa. Each day Greavam or Dervin was with us or organizing our activities. Some things that we did include horseback riding, Lazy Lizard catamaran and snorkeling, jet ski rentals, watching sea turtles lay eggs in Playa Ostional, and the canopy tours/ mud bath/ and hot springs in Rincon de la Vieja. We even ate supper with Drevin, his wife, Anna, and children (Daniel, Allen, and Catalina) and Greavam on our way back from watching the Ridley sea turtles laying eggs....which only happens four days twice a year. This shows that the reviews are "spot on" when it reads that these guys treat you like family. Both men taught all of my family things that we will always remember. We were all truly impressed with Yellowfin Sporting Charters services, but more importantly with the hospitality that these wonderful people have shared with us!!!" Nicole

"I had an amazing trip to Costa Rica and owe a big thank you to Dervin for the experience! Dervin was very accommodating of our large group and very knowledgable about the country. He answered all our questions and was very informative! He took us to local hang outs off the beaten track so we could experience the real Costa Rica! He took us out on a catamaran and even brought us fresh shrimp because we had request it. He takes the time to get to know his clients and customizes trips for you! I can't say enough good things about Dervin and Yellowfin Sportfishing! Choose Dervin next time you are in Costa Rica, You will not be disappointed!" Samantha

"Thanks to my dad and friends, I've been dealing with Mr. Dervin ever since I went to Costa Rica for the first time! I'm 18 and have known him for about 7 years and nothing I could say about him could match up to how truly amazing he really is! Such a genuine guy, and the service he provides is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. You're basically royalty with Mr. Dervin! He's very adventurous and any activity we encounter he takes care of us always. He recently set up a very important project for my school in Maryland and I've had nothing but outrageous results. Mr. Dervin's the man to go to; I wouldn't chose another tour guide or staff for anything else! I just got back from vacation, (with Dervin tagging along thank goodness), and another amazing vacation came out of it! Mr. Dervin is your go to man! You won't regret it!" Kattie

Crew of Marlin del Rey catamaran

5-Star Rating on TripAdvisor

Woman & crew members Marlin del Rey

We booked thru our hotel and had a shuttle to coco beach. They are very organized and friendly boat staff. Great music, food and drinks. We saw flying fish, dolphins and stingrays. Ended with a beautiful sunset. We went on a Sunday and had 28 ppl on catamaran...I would go again!

Tourists sunbathing on catamaran

We had a great trip, from prompt pick up on the shore to viewing the beautiful sunset and return to Coco beach. The food was good, crew was attentive, vessel was spotless too. I would highly recommend the trip to anyone wanted to have a great day of beautiful scenery.

Women on catamaran drinking

What an absolutely fantastic day. There were almost 50 of us on board plus the crew. There is so much space that it never felt crowded once. These amazing men took care of us better than we ever could have expected - felt like Queens and Kings on our ship. The food was delicious, drinks were non-stop and the sights were breathtaking. Could not have picked a better thing to do!

Snorkeling in Costa Rica

This was by far the best organized tour that I have ever been on. The crew was courteous and helpful; especially Johann Gutierrez. As a Master Diver, he gave me tips on where and how to maximize my snorkeling experience on his waters..EVERYONE was treated like family. Thank you Johann, for everything you did to make this a lifelong memory!!

Guests eating on Marlin del Rey catamaran

Once you arrive our friendly team receives you with a warm welcome, and equips you with harnesses, helmets, and gloves followed by a safety speech and introduction to ziplining. Once equipped and your questions have been answered it is time for the fun to begin!    Start by ascending a majestic spiral staircase around a 20-meter-tall Guanacaste tree. The tour includes 10 ziplines, (Ziplines are from 50 to 400 meters long) 1 hanging bridge, 1 Tibetan bridge, and a Tarzan Swing, where we will jump from one tree to the other to continue with the rest of the ziplines. The zipline takes place in two different kinds of forest; primary and secondary. In the first section, you soar over the trees providing you with a bird’s eye view of the primary forest, and the second one is under bigger and greener trees including the Spavel; also known as “the tree friend of rivers” because they grow next to a lot of water. The change in these 2 forests is noticeable, guests will have a better understanding of the works and importance of nature and conservation. In this section of the tour, we can sometimes see families of Howler Monkeys that call this forest their home.

Best Beaches in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

T here are an endless number of beaches in Guanacaste, and it can be hard to pick the best one for your family. This list will give you an overview of each of the beaches we think are best for families in Guanacaste.

For most of the beaches on this list, you’ll want to fly into the Liberia International Airport and find a place to stay in Liberia for the first night.

No matter which beach on this list you visit, you’ll find outstanding beauty, clear warm waters, amazing weather, awesome beach resorts, and friendly locals.

If this is your preferred vacation destination, here’s a list of some of the best beaches in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Looking for a Caribbean vibe? Check out our list of the best Caribbean beaches in Costa Rica. Have young children? This is the list of best Costa Rican beaches for young families .

Playa Flamingo

With crystal clear blue waters, shade-lined coasts, an array of unspoiled beaches, stunning sunsets, and gorgeous white sand that sometimes acquires a slight shade of pink in certain weather conditions, Flamingo beach is truly a paradise.

Fishing enthusiasts can delight in the wide range of marine life both near the shore and deeper in the waters. Water sports lovers can enjoy snorkeling, surfing , swimming, and scuba diving. And those who are just looking to relax can lounge under the shaded coast and soak in the views of the ocean.

But gratifying beach days are just a drop in the bucket of all the fun you’ll have here. There’s a lot more to do nearby too including wildlife sightings, ATV tours, horseback riding, ziplining , whitewater rafting, and turtle nesting tours, all of which would be fun for the whole family. We love to stay at Margaritaville when we visit Playa Flamingo.

Playa Conchal

Named after the millions of tiny pinkish seashells that make up the sand, Playa Conchal is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica.

However, admiring the pristine natural beauty of Conchal is not the only reason people come here; the sparkling turquoise waters are also calm, warm, and great for swimming, and the lush palm trees and mangrove forest near the shore provide the perfect shade for a relaxing beach day, making this a popular destination for families.

Visitors who can pull themselves from the charming sand can indulge in various activities such as fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, jet skiing, scuba diving, paddle boarding, and horse riding.

The more adventurous ones can book an ATV tour or make arrangements for a day trip to Diamante Eco Adventure Park and test the country’s longest Superman Zip Line!

Playa Hermosa

Another spectacular destination for people looking for a calm and relaxing day in the sun is Playa Hermosa. With stunning gray sands, pearly blue waters, and verdant green vegetation, Hermosa truly lives to its name, welcoming watersports lovers of all ages every year.

After you have taken a swim, snorkeled, or scuba-dived in the dazzling waters, why not lay on the warm sand and get some tan while you savor the beautiful scenery around you or take an evening stroll on a horse and watch the magnificent sunset?

Additionally, you can visit the nearby Catalinas Islands and spot some marine life; it’s the perfect place for watching stingrays, sea turtles, and sharks. The calm waters are also great for jet skiing, water biking, and windsurfing.

Playa Grande

Want to catch the waves all day? Playa Grande has got you covered! Here, you will find different wave breaks for different surfing needs, from the beginner-friendly low tides to the more challenging high tides to perfect your skill. Plus it’s not too crowded, which makes it a great place for those looking for a peaceful surf day.

Another special feature that keeps visitors coming back to Grande is the marine park that’s incorporated into the beach where thousands of rays, tropical fish, howler monkeys , snakes, lizards, and exotic birds dwell. The park is also a popular nesting site for sea turtles; if you visit any time between October and May, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the giant Leatherbacks who come out onto the shore at night to lay their eggs. It’s such a sight to behold!

Playas del Coco

If you walk along the black sand beach at Playas del Coco, you’ll notice that the majority of visitors are families with children just relaxing and having a good time. Why, you may ask?

Well, unlike many popular destinations in Guanacaste and the Pacific Coast, Coco is quiet, laid back, and has calm, mellow waves, making it one of the best beaches for people with kids (or even pets) who love to play with water. Nightlife here can be a bit crazy, so we generally have accommodations here where we stay out until about 8, and then head home to unwind. Don’t miss the traditional Costa Rican food at El Ancla.

Swimming, snorkeling, boating, and scuba diving are among the activities you can enjoy here, and if you’re an adrenaline junkie, you’ll be happy to know that Coco boasts the longest and most unique Superman Zip Line in Costa Rica. Not only will you enjoy the thrill of height and speed; the remarkable views of the ocean from up there will be an unforgettable feast for the eyes.

Playa Tamarindo

The Tamarindo beach is one of the destinations that receive Vitamin Sea lovers in huge numbers and for good reason – the beach itself is clean, the crystal blue waters stay warm all year round, and the sparkling white sands dotted with beautiful palm trees are absolutely stunning. It’s the perfect place to tan and delight in the clear, warm waters of the Pacific Ocean.

You can swim, surf, snorkel, scuba dive, fish, and watch nesting sea turtles, all while enjoying a chilled-out atmosphere. But don’t let the low-key vibe fool you; days in Tamarindo may be calm and slow, but the nights are a different story. With an array of bars and restaurants to choose from, there’s no shortage of live music. You will, without a doubt, experience some of the best nightlife in Guanacaste! We love to visit the Volcano Brewery here.

Playa Langosta

If you’re looking for a much calmer and quieter vacation, Playa Langosta would be excellent. Tucked away near the larger and livelier Tamarindo, Langosta is one of the hidden gems in Costa Rica that offer high-quality surf breaks and fewer crowds, making it a top destination for advanced surfers. Just be sure to keep an eye out for coral and rock outcroppings!

For non-surfers, there are many other fun activities available such as kayaking, ATV tours, ziplining, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Also, Las Baulas Marine National Park is only a hike away for those who would like to spot some wildlife including witnessing the phenomenal turtle nesting.

Playa Ocotal

Just a hop, skip, and jump from Playa del Coco is a little hidden gem called Playa Ocotal. Surrounded by cliffs that turn gorgeously green in the wintertime, the best part about this beach is the tidepools to explore at low tide. Oh, and the women who come to do massages on the beach. Don’t miss eating some amazing Costa Rican nachos or sipping a cocktail at the Father Rooster restaurant.

Playa Nacazcolo

This beach isn’t easy to get to, but it’s so worth it when you do. A private beach on the Four Seasons property, you’ll take a shuttle down to the beach entrance. Just about 50 steps down again, past some gorgeous white-faced monkeys chattering away, you’ll find a little slice of paradise.

Clear water and calm waves make this a perfect beach for littles, or a romantic getaway for couples looking for a bit of privacy. Easily accessible from Planet Hollywood All-Inclusive resort .

Playa Cabuyal

If you are looking for a great hidden beach you can just drive up to, Cabuyal is your place. It’s secluded enough to be private and boasts some of the best sunsets in the country. We love. to go during the dry season to see the sting rays dancing in the water. Be careful here though, there are strong currents and it can be dangerous at high tide.

Playa Avellanas

We first visited this beach with my oldest back in 2013 and fell in love- it’s on our top 5 best beaches for families list . It’s a great surfing beach, and accommodations are just a short walk through the tropical forest. We love the restaurant Lola’s right on the beach- you’ll find everything from ice-cold beer to fresh fish ceviche.

Playa Junquillal

I first visited this beach when I was looking for a different beach and got turned around on the roads. (People, navigating Costa Rica is no joke!) Junquillal is a long beach (more than a mile long) with fabulous tide pools at the north end and a great Costa Rican restaurant to the south. This beach is just on the top side of the Nicoya Peninsula and is truly one of my favorite Guanacaste beaches. I’d recommend staying for at least a few days!

Playa Panama

Panama beach is a gorgeous soft white sand beach perfect for families. We love to go here on a day trip from Playa Hermosa. I just love the thin palm trees whose bases are painted like the Costa Rican flag. This is one of the best places to spend the day relaxing with an ice-cold beer, a perfect breeze, and calm waves. Note there isn’t much shade at Playa Panama and we usually bring a large umbrella and really good sunscreen.

What is Costa Rica Like in January?

April 16, 2024 By Sammi Leave a Comment

January is a fantastic time to visit Costa Rica as Christmas crowds have disappeared, everything is drying up and high season is in full swing. In this post, you’ll learn what January in Costa Rica is like and why it’s a wonderful time to see Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Quick Facts

  • Sunrise and sunset is roughly the same all year round, with a difference of around 15 minutes. Sunrise is generally 6 AM and sunset is 530 PM, dark by 6 PM.
  • Costa Rica uses 110 V and drives on the right hand side of the road.
  • Local currency is called the colón. Exchange rate ~500 CRC to 1 USD.
  • Spanish is the main language.
  • Costa Rica is 8-12 degrees from the equator.

January in Costa Rica Weather

First and foremost, the weather . Average day time and night time temperatures do not vary greatly throughout the year in Costa Rica, so temperatures in January won’t be drastically different the rest of the months.

Costa Rica experiences two tropical seasons: dry and rainy. Dry season is generally December through April, rainy is generally May through November. January is the second month of dry season so most of the country is drying up with high temperatures, sunny blue skies and minimal rain.

Since the first month of dry season, December, is more like a transition month, dry season really starts picking up in January and is truly the first dry month in Costa Rica. In January, the northern winds come in, giving a nice, continuous breeze.

Below are short descriptions of weather in January for popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica.

Guanacaste and Nicoya Peninsula

Dry tropical areas such as the Guanacaste coast ( La Cruz , Papagayo Peninsula , Tamarindo , Samara , Nosara ) and Nicoya Peninsula ( Montezuma , Tambor, Santa Teresa ) will see their last hard rains around end of November/beginning of December so don’t expect any rain in January.

By end of January, dry forest covered mountains start turning yellow and bare and humidity levels decrease greatly. Sun is out bright and strong during the day with constant winds, evenings are warm and sultry.

January in Costa Rica - Guanacaste beaches

Average day time temperatures are 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35°Celsius) and average night time temperatures are 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26° Celsius).

If you visit the higher elevation areas in the Guanacaste province such as Tilaran, Mirvalles , Nuevo Arenal and around the Bijagua areas, they may still see some rain.

Central Valley

The GAM ( San Jose, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago ) has lovely weather in January with warm sunny days, fresh air, constant breezes and cozy nights. Average day time temperatures are 80° F (27° C) and average night time temperatures are 65° F (18° C). If you’re up in the high mountains of the Central Valley, expect much cooler temperatures.

La Fortuna sits in the Northern Lowlands, part of the tropical rainforest which has the possibility to still rain randomly. It could be intermittent sprinkles or ten minute downpours in the late afternoons and evenings.

January in Cosat Rica arenal volcano

Average day time temperatures are 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29° Celsius) and average night time temperatures are 72° Fahrenheit (22° Celsius). Humidity levels are around 60%.

Jaco, Manuel Antonio

Jaco and Manuel Antonio weather is similar to La Fortuna as this area is also tropical rainforest. The coast does tend to be a tad hotter, so daytime is more around 88° F (31° C) but humidity level are very similar. If it rains, it will be most likely at night and for short bursts. Humidity levels around 60%.

Costa Ballena and Osa Peninsula

These areas, Costa Ballena ( Dominical , Uvita and Ojochal) and Osa Peninsula ( Drake Bay , Matapalo, Carate and Puerto Jimenez) are tropical rainforest areas, so there are possibilities of intermittent rain in January still. Average day time temperatures are 90° F (32° C) and average night time temperatures are 80° F (27° C). Humidity levels around 60%.

Monteverde , the mountain town in the Tilaran Mountain Range experiences high winds, intermittent sprinkles, fresh crisp air and comfortable nights in January. It can still sprinkle but generally for short periods of time and then the bright rainbows come out (hence the nickname, town of rainbows). Average day time temperatures are 72° Fahrenheit (22° Celsius) and average night time temperatures are 60° Fahreinehit (16 C). Low humidity.

Caribbean (Tortuguero, Limon and Puerto Viejo)

The Caribbean coast ( Puerto Viejo de Talamanca , Limon and Tortuguero ) tends to follow a different weather pattern than the rest of Costa Rica. January can still have some days of hard rain, so you may run into storms and wet days. Average day time temperatures are 90° F (32° F) and average night time temperatures are 75° F (24° C). Humidity levels around 60%.

Prices in January in Costa Rica

As January is the start of the normal high tourism season, prices are high but not as high as peak season. Peak season is the week of Christmas and New Years, where hotel nights on December 24-31st are easily twice as much as normal times and can have a 3 night minimum. But after the first few days of January, prices go back down to normal high season prices.

Airfare usually goes down after the first week of January. I have found relatively cheap flights from Seattle to Costa Rica mid to end of January (~$500 USD basic economy).

Crowds in January in Costa Rica

The first week of January is generally still very busy due to lingering Christmas and New Years crowds. By the second week of January, it will have gone back to normal high season crowds.

January is the second month of the Costa Rica schools’ summer vacation so there will be lots of families on vacation. Weekends are generally very busy at popular national parks and beaches, with local families enjoying their days off. Purchase your national park tickets early if required, such as Tenorio Volcano National Park and Manuel Antonio National Park.

Best Things to Do in January in Costa Rica

January is a great month to experience all Costa Rica has to offer in terms of culture, nature, adventure and wildlife. Here are some of the best things to do in January in Costa Rica.

The surf in January is fairly consistent. The Pacific Northwest coast (Guanacaste) picks up NW swells so beaches like Tamarindo , Playa Langosta , Playa Grande, Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas have days where the waves are firing. The famous Witch’s Rock (Roca Bruja) can have good waves when there is a north swell, otherwise it’s generally small in January. For the highly experienced, big wave chaser, the Caribbean coast spot Salsa Brava can boast some of the heaviest barrels and reef breaks.

january in costa rica surfing

Water temperature is nice and warm, in the high 70s to low 80s F ( 25-28°C).

If you’re not into surfing, no worries! Try to visit many beaches as it’s one of the best things to do in January in Costa Rica. Take a walk, watch the sunset, play in the waters, boogie board and get your tan on (safely, because the sun is strong so make sure to apply and reapply reef safe sunscreen).

January is a great time to visit national parks and private reserves for a hike or two thanks to the drier weather. Landscapes are still somewhat green in dry tropical forests from the last rains so it doesn’t look too arid and desert like.

Great options are Rincon de la Vieja National Park , Barra Honda National Park , Carara National Park , Manuel Antonio National Park and Corcovado National Park . Make sure to bring good sun protection like a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, mosquito repellent and an insulated water bottle to have cold water.

White Water Rafting

As rivers will still be full from the rainy season, white water rafting is very good in January. Raft down pristine rivers like Pacuare River Class 3, 4 and 4+ rapids, Sarapiqui River Class 3 and 4, Savegre River Class 2 and 3 and Tenorio River Class 3 and 4.

January is the start and end of several wildlife seasons in Costa Rica. First, January is a bit after the start of the Northern Hemisphere humpback whale season in Costa Rica. If you’re in the Central or South Pacific, you can take a whale watching tour from Uvita for good chances to see humpback whales and dolphins.

Second, January is the end of the arribadas , or mass nesting of Olive Ridley sea turtles on Playa Ostional in Ostional Wildlife Refuge . The arribada in January has diminished considerably compared to the previous months, but there are still chances to see nesting mothers and baby turtles hatching. For leatherback turtles, January is the start of their nesting season in Marino Las Baulas National Park (sadly their numbers have decreased greatly and it’s not super common to see them anymore).

Water clarity in January greatly improves due to the disappearance of torrential rains, run off and storms. Snorkeling and scuba diving are great, with an abundance of colorful tropical fish and other marine life like turtles, rays and sharks to be seen. Snorkeling at Tortuga Island , Isla Caño Reserve , Gulf of Papagayo and Catalinas Islands are wonderful.

january in costa rica snorkeling

As January is winter up north, the migrating birds will be in Costa Rica. It’s a fantastic time to see these million mile fliers as well as other river birds. Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and Palo Verde National Park are two excellent places for safari boat rides to see birds and other wildlife.

Local Festivals and Parties

Costa Ricans like to party and they do by throwing fiestas civicas which are the local parties. Nearly all towns, especially in rural areas, have local parties and it’s a really fun way to immerse yourself into Costa Rican culture.

Local parties normally have the typical party activities: street food, rides and games. Costa Rican local parties also have bull riding. They do not partake in bullfights like Mexico or Spain, rather they let a bull loose in a stadium and everyone runs around from it. They’ll do gimmicks like tying money to the bull horns and everyone will try to grab it. They also do bull riding and they’ll have competitions.

Another aspect of local parties are the topes which are the horse parades. This is very common in the Guanacaste province as this is the land of the Costa Rican cowboys. Hundreds of local dress up in cowboy flair and parade around their best horses. To cool off during the hot day, they drink lots of ice cold Costa Rican beer.

Notable Festivals and Days in January in Costa Rica

New Years Day: Generally outside with family, enjoying the last days before going back to work. Or nursing the hangover from the countdown the night before.

Palmares: The local parties of the town of Palmares are famous and are the biggest in the country, attracting nearly 1 million visitors (out of a total country population of 5.2 million). They happen every second Friday in January for around 10 days.

Santa Cruz: Known as the town of folklore, local parties in Santa Cruz get more popular year after year. You’ll see the proud Guanacasteco cowboys of all ages braving the bulls, showing off their steeds and throwing back Chiliguaro shots like there’s no tomorrow.

Alajuelita January 15: This religious festival pays homage to the Black Christ of Esquipulas. This pilgrimage is very important to dedicated Catholics as Catholicism is the main religion of Costa Rica.

Other Things to Know About January in Costa Rica

  • Road conditions are usually not great during this month after they have suffered through several months of rain and storms. Although some remote/rural places may only need a sedan or high clearance car in dry season, check with your host if a 4wd will be required/recommended instead due to the worsened road condition. Check our renting a car in Costa Rica tips and get our Costa Rica car rental discount here!
  • Waterfalls are still very full so it’s a great time to do a waterfall tour. However, some places in the tropical rainforest that may still rain in January, may still have lots of run off and be a murky brown color. For example, Rio Celeste Waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park may be more green/brown than the beautiful sky blue color if it has been raining as that area can still rain in January.
  • It is generally quite windy in January so it may not be the best time for a catamaran or sailing tour if you are prone to seasickness. Afternoons are normally windier than mornings. If it is too windy, activities like ziplining may be cancelled due to safety concerns.
  • January is not the cheapest time to travel in Costa Rica but it is the most lively. Everything is open, everyone is excited for the high tourism season once more and it is easy to find tours to join if you’re a solo traveler.

January is excellent time to visit Costa Rica for fun, festivities, adventure, relaxation and an escape from the start of the Northern Hemisphere winters. Soak up all the sun in Costa Rica you need to make it through the rest of the winter days back home.

Sunken living room in Costa Rica house with red couch and greenery

Rainy season in Nosara, Costa Rica , stretches for seven months. The climate, with its inexorable humidity and salt air, wreaks havoc on building materials and quotidian staples like rugs and books. Termites and ants are constantly on the march, and the power grid occasionally goes down. Reshma Patel and her husband, Christian Rudder, a cofounder of the online dating site OkCupid, know all about the struggle. In 2020, the couple decamped from New York City to Costa Rica with their daughter, Plum, for what was initially meant to be a one-year sojourn. But the Edenic landscape proved irresistible, and the family decided to put down roots. “We wanted to learn how to live in harmony with nature, so we decided that we were going to be okay with the ants and power outages and all the rest,” Patel says. “It’s a really brave thing to build a home in the jungle,” she adds. “You can try to keep it at bay, but the jungle always finds a way in.”

The family doing independent activities around the open concept kitchen

Christian Rudder, Reshma Patel, and daughter Plum in the kitchen. Architecture by Years with Garnier Arquitectos. Michael van Beuren barstools by Luteca , Lou Castillo vase, and floor, wall, and island tile throughout by Alchemy Materials .

To realize their vision of equatorial domestic bliss, Patel and Rudder engaged Tyler Polich and Jessica Jimenez Keenan of the recently launched Los Angeles design studio Years , along with local architect Jean Andre Garnier of Garnier Arquitectos . Polich (whose résumé includes the AD100 firms Diller Scofidio + Renfro , The Archers , and Bjarke Ingels Group ) and Jimenez Keenan (an alumna of Elizabeth Roberts Architects and Studio Shamshiri ) originally met the homeowners in New York while working on projects for Patel’s erstwhile Williamsburg jewelry boutique Quiet Storms. “We immediately clicked with Tyler and Jessica, and we wanted to carry forward all the trust and fun we had,” Patel recalls.

Early touchstones for the architecture of the home included signature projects by the likes of Luis Barragán, Lina Bo Bardi, Héctor Barroso, and Bijoy Jain—designers accustomed to building in similarly sultry climates. “We looked at a lot of Brutalist modern fortresses in Mexico, and we liked the materiality of concrete and wood, which have a kind of warmth and texture in contrast to a lot of the modern architecture in Nosara,” Rudder explains. Polich seconds the notion, describing the design of the house—with its cast-in-place concrete barrel vaults, hand-chiseled stone, terra-cotta breeze-block screens, tile floors, and planes of teak—in terms of “soulful, earthy, heavy tectonics.” In regard to the concrete work in particular, Polich remains sanguine: “You have to lean into the rustic quality. This was never going to be a Tadao Ando project.”

Sitting room with blue couch coffee table and wall decals

The cork-lined family room has a sofa by Piero Lissoni for Cassina , a Fabien Cappello table lamp, a Mitchell Denburg Collection rug, and a wall sculpture by Paz Ulloa .

Although the interior appointments cast a wide net—consider the 19th-century French wrought-iron chandelier and vintage Paul McCobb chairs in the dining area—the many Latin American artists and artisans represented underscore the house’s unique sense of place. Custom pieces designed by Years and fabricated in Costa Rica reinforce the primacy of the handmade and the local. There’s the capacious cedar-and-lacquer storage unit—essentially a mudroom encapsulated in a cabinet—which sits at the entry; the dining table of pieced slabs of green and blue quartzite and yellow onyx; the primary bedroom headboard composed of teak, cedar, purpleheart, and guanacaste woods; and other impressive bespoke creations.

“We think a lot about the ways in which our work is situated in a particular place, time, and cultural context, and how buildings create experience and memory,” Jimenez Keenan says. The designers point to the reddish-orange tones of the living room, which deliberately play against the colors of the jungle, and the rugged stone walls that move from the exterior to the inside of the guesthouse. “The casita will eventually feel like a ruin, overgrown with foliage, something that looks as if it belongs here,” she notes.

Outdoor view of the family near the house's pool surrounded by palm trees

Patel and Plum by the pool. Landscape design by Vida Design Studio . Custom rocking chair by Kharis.

In more practical terms, the architecture of the house speaks to Costa Rica’s steadfast commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and conservation of biodiversity. Save for the bedrooms, most of the home is not air-conditioned. Years worked with the firm Sphera Sostenible to ensure that the structure adheres to the country’s progressive policies. The sustainable design elements they implemented include solar power; black- and gray-water irrigation systems; native and adaptive landscape; natural cross ventilation; rainwater collection for the pool and toilets; and locally sourced materials. “In Costa Rica, they’re not just paying lip service to sustainability. They really mean it,” Polich affirms.

Ultimately, the homeowners have few regrets about the decision to trade the concrete jungle of New York City for the actual jungle of Nosara. “There’s a quieter pace here. Everything about this house feels connected to the land in the most beautiful, organic way,” Patel muses. “This kind of life may not be for everyone, but it’s right for us.”
