Stop in Taihape, New Zealand’s gumboot capital, where you can grab a photo. Head through Foxton and check out how different the beaches on the west coast are when compared to the east. We strongly recommend just before you head into Wellington, put into google maps Red Rocks – Pariwhero. This will take you to a spot where you can see the seals as they are lying around on the rocks and playing in the water. The best part is there is no fee! Hundreds of New Zealand fur seals come onto the rocks to play and lounge around. You mustn’t get too close to them and ensure you respect the area by not leaving any rubbish behind.

The 92 km journey between Wellington and Picton takes around 3 hours and has been described as 'one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world'. Leaving Wellington Harbour you pass many interesting points such as Pencarrow Head on top of which is New Zealand's oldest lighthouse (1859). Red Rocks is home to a seal colony and Oterangi Bay is the site which recorded the country's highest ever wind speed of 268 kph (167 mph). From the Cook Strait spectacular views of the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island can be enjoyed and dolphins and many sea birds are often seen. Around one hour of the cruise takes you through the Marlborough Sounds and this region of bush covered mountains, small islands, crystal clear waters and secluded bays offer remarkable photographic opportunities. The final leg of your cruise travels through Queen Charlotte Sound before coming to an end in the picturesque town of Picton.

Start by exploring the Christchurch Botanical Gardens, which is boasting the widest collection of both native and exotic plants in all of New Zealand.

Day 2: Christchurch to Dunedin

Distance: 360kms, travel time: 4hrs 34min.

Time to hit the road! On your first leg of the trip, don’t tire yourself out and stop at the pretty country town of Geraldine. Here you will find the local thriving business, Barker’s at Geraldine, famous for their chutneys and chocolate sauce. With a cafe attached, it’s a great place to stop and have a tea break before heading off on your final journey to Christchurch.

Day 3: Dunedin

Dunedin is a mix of heritage, wildlife and colourful nightlife. During your stay here explore some of the many popular museums as well as New Zealand’s only castle - Larnach Castle, which has been carefully restored to its original Victorian grandeur.

Day 4: Dunedin - Balclutha

Day 5: Balclutha - Stewart Island (leave vehicle at Bluff)

Today you will be heading to Bluff, to take the ferry ride to Stewart Island. You will need to leave your campervan at Bluff as motorhomes are not permitted on the island. If you’re a seafood fan, make sure you try Bluff oysters before you hop on the ferry to Stewart Island.

Day 6: Stewart Island

Stewart Island has an area of 1,746 square kilometres and is the third-largest island of New Zealand. The island is heaven for bird watchers due to the absence of natural predators, birds have been able to form huge colonies including some special species.

Day 7: Stewart Island - Fiordland

Distance: 179kms, travel time: 2hrs 7min.

Head back on the ferry to Bluff to pick up your campervan and get back on the road heading east to Fiordland. On your way to Fiordland, stop in Winton and visit some of the best op-shops in the country and enjoy a tea or coffee at Magnolia Tree Cafe.

Day 8: Fiordland - Queenstown

Distance: 171kms, travel time: 2hrs.

Before heading north to Queenstown, spend the day exploring Milford Sound - one of New Zealand’s top visitor attractions. Rain or shine, it continues to captivate all types of travellers with its beautiful surroundings, ink-dark waters, gushing waterfalls and captivating views.

Day 9: Queenstown

Being the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown boasts a variety of activities for all sorts of people. Feeling adventurous? Give jet boating or bungy jumping a go! Not feeling that brave? A lake cruise enjoying the stunning mountain views might be more your speed.

Day 10: Queenstown - Lake Tekapo

Distance: 256kms, travel time: 3hrs 3mins.

While driving from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo, make a stop at Mt Cook - New Zealand’s highest mountain.To see the best view of the mountain and glacial scenery, book a helicopter ride. If you’d rather enjoy the view while enjoying a meal, there’s a number of restaurants at the top of the mountain with tasty food to enjoy the picturesque views from.

Day 11: Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo (a part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve), can be found in the heart of the Mackenzie Country. Here is the perfect place to unwind after 10 adventure-filled days to lie by the lake and admire the pristine blanket of sparkling stars where they burn brightly as though they were only close by.

Day 12: Lake Tekapo - Kaikoura

Distance: 400kms, travel time: 5hrs 4mins.

To break up the long 5 hour drive, stretch your legs at Rakaia Gorge Walkway. The whole track is 10.4 km return, however, if you just make your walk for 45 minutes you will find yourself at a good lookout point to enjoy the views from. Once arriving in Kaikoura, hire a surf board down at the beach to catch a few waves. 

Day 13: Kaikoura - Hanmer Springs

Distance: 130kms, travel time: 1hr 52mins.

Once arriving in Hanmer Springs, relax at the hot springs or one of the spas in town. If you’d rather not rest your feet, Hanmer Springs offers a range of outdoor activities like jet boating, horse trekking and bungy jumping.

Day 14: Hanmer Springs - Marlborough Sounds

Distance: 287kms, travel time: 3hrs 56min.

Day 15: Marlborough Sounds

Day 19: Whanganui - New Plymouth

Distance: 161kms, travel time: 2hrs 5mins.

New Plymouth is situated in the Taranaki region, which is full of incredible waterways. The best way to see them up close and personal is a kayaking tour! Book yourself on a kayaking tour on the open sea heading to the Sugar Loaf Islands Marine Reserve. Make sure you have a waterproof camera as you’ll want to capture the seal colonies you come across.

Day 20: New Plymouth - Waitomo

Distance: 172kms, travel time: 2hrs 29mins.

On your way from New Plymouth to Waitomo, you’ll take the New Zealand State Highway 43 also called the Forgotten World Highway. This picturesque highway makes driving an absolute breeze. On your way you’ll also find a couple of ghost towns and the Moki Tunnel, better known as Hobbit’s Hole.

Day 21: Waitomo - Rotorua

Distance: 139kms, travel time: 1hrs 48mins.

Prior to heading off to Rotorua, spend the day exploring Waitomo. This area’s name comes from the Maori words wai (water) and tomo (hole) as underneath the green hills of Waitomo lies a maze of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers.

Day 22: Rotorua

Admire the views of stunning clouds of geothermal steams from the Inferno Crater at the Waimangu Volcanic Valley. If you're feeling adventurous, there are also great activities like hikes, walks, cruises, or a combination of all within the relaxing area of Lake Rotomahana.

Day 23: Rotorua - Auckland

Most people will fly into Auckland on the North Island and make their way south, or fly into Christchurch on the South Island and make their way north or further south for their New Zealand itinerary.

For this New Zealand road trip itinerary, we’re going to start in Auckland and finish up in Christchurch .

However, any New Zealand road trip itineraries can also be done in reverse. The Christchurch to Auckland route can sometimes result in cheaper rental fees due to it being less popular than Auckland to Christchurch.

Before embarking on a New Zealand road trip it’s worth doing some research to get to know the road system a little better.

First, in New Zealand, you drive on the left-hand side of the road. This is not a great surprise as it was formerly part of the British Empire.

Second, you should expect the roads to be narrow and very windy. Driving in New Zealand is not like driving on the open highways of the USA or Australia.

Expect journeys to take much longer than they would in your home country. 

Roads are in excellent condition and people in New Zealand are generally very courteous drivers.

However, during peak travel seasons don’t be surprised if you find yourself behind a huge 6 berth camper van at some point. 

Road conditions are a super important thing to consider when planning a road trip anywhere, but especially on a New Zealand itinerary!

This really depends on how long your New Zealand itinerary will be. If you’re buying a vehicle you will need to add time to the beginning and end of your road trip.

Generally, if your New Zealand itinerary is 6 weeks or less it’s not really going to be cost or time effective to buy a vehicle.

If you have longer than that, however, buying may be the best option.

So get the calculator out and start the number crunching. 

The best way to get around is to rent a car and explore on your own! We recommend Rental Cars , which has the largest range of vehicles for the best value on the market.

“Freedom camping” is limited to certain locations and self-contained vehicles.

If you’re self-contained, this means that you can go for three days or more without dumping waste or water, have a toilet, fresh and wastewater storage and a rubbish bin with a lid. 

There are clear signs where you can and cannot freedom camp and what the vehicle requirements are.

Sadly there are a small number of people that continue to spoil it for everyone by freedom camping where they shouldn’t.

Or they freedom camp in vehicles which are not self-contained or they leave their rubbish for someone else to clear up.

Please don’t be one of these people. 

New Zealand road trip itineraries can last as long or short as you want. We want to share some awesome road-tripping ideas from across the country that can be pieced together as you see fit.

New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary – North Island

You’ll begin this New Zealand road trip itinerary on the North Island in Auckland. From here we’ll take you the length of both islands.

Spend your first couple of days getting over the jet lag and exploring New Zealand’s largest city. Check out the Sky Tower as well as the Auckland Museum and Art Gallery.  

Take a day to get out of the city and explore the city’s beaches and hiking routes before picking up the keys to your vehicle and heading out onto the open road.

From Auckland head north to the Bay of Islands. The towns of Paihia and Russell are big draws here.

However, en route make sure you visit the spectacular Tutukaka Coast .

This stunning stretch of coastline is rarely visited and with numerous deserted beaches and awesome views, it offers something very different from Paihia and Russell. 

From the Bay of Islands, you can continue heading north towards Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach.

This off-the-beaten-track area of New Zealand is particularly breathtaking. However, it is noticeably economically depressed in parts.

The vast majority of people lack the time to make it this far as it’s another day’s drive from the Bay of Islands.

If you have the time it’s well worth it, but if your time is limited then you may wish to spend it elsewhere.

From the Bay of Islands, double back on yourself and loop around Auckland before arriving at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula.

Many people will skip this and head on to Taupo or Rotorua.

However, doing this will mean you will miss out on one of New Zealand’s most incredible yet secret destinations. 

One of the highlights of this part of New Zealand is quiet coastal roads that at points hug the ocean’s edge. As you begin to circle around the end of the peninsula you head up into the hills offering some lovely views. 

There is some stunning coastal scenery dotted along the peninsula. Cathedral Cove and the hot water beach to the south of it are particularly lovely spots on the eastern side of the peninsula.  

As you leave the Coromandel Peninsula head towards to small coastal town of Mount Maunganui to check out its gorgeous beach and the stunning views from the top of Mount Maunganui itself. 

After some time in the town of Mount Maunganui head over to New Zealand’s geothermal capital Rotorua.

On the way check out Te Rerekawau and Mclaren Falls , two excellent spots for a break from driving. 

You also have to visit Wai O Tapu Thermal Wonderland on your trip to New Zealand. As part of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, Wai O Tapu has the coolest geothermal views and landscapes.

From Rotorua hop on the Thermal Explorer Highway and head down towards Lake Taupo and the central region of New Zealand’s North Island

After following the Thermal Explorer Highway from Rotorua you will arrive at Lake Taupo, the North Island’s adventure capital.

Every New Zealand road trip must include a stop in Taupo. Its central location allows you to branch out to other areas of the North Island without having to double back on yourself.

After getting your fill of adrenaline activities in Taupo head towards the stunning Tongariro National Park along the south edge of the lake.

Expect stunning views, especially if you’re travelling around sunset. 

The Tongariro National Park is stunning and is home to numerous excellent hikes.

Make sure you base yourself around Whakapapa where there are several accommodation options including an excellent holiday park for those travelling in a campervan.

Whakapapa is the starting point for many hikes and is very close to Mangatepopo car park , the starting point for the Tongariro Crossing , regarded as one of the best one-day walks in the world

For this section of the New Zealand itinerary, there is a bit of doubling back on yourself. However, I promise it’s worth it. 

From the Tongariro National Park head north towards the tiny town of Waitomo just a stone’s throw from the town of Te Kuiti , which prides itself as being the sheep shearing capital of the world. 

Spend your time in Waitomo deep underground exploring the area’s caves , with the Lost World being the pick of the bunch. 

From Waitomo double back on yourself and head to the town Taumarunui and hop on the spectacular and rarely visited Forgotten World Highway .

Running through some gorgeous New Zealand countryside the highway ends in the town of Stratford , very close to Mount Taranaki.

With its almost perfect cone, Mount Taranaki reminds many of the more well-known Mount Fuji. The area is home to some spectacular hikes. 

From Mount Taranaki head towards the east coast and follow it all the way down New Zealand’s wet and windy capital, Wellington .

There are numerous tiny beach towns to stop at on the way, with windswept Hitamangi being a decent place to spend the night. 

If you’ve skipped the sections from Tongariro to Taranaki, then an alternative route is the rather lovely road that follows the Mangawhero and Whanganui Rivers all the way to the coast offering some spectacular scenery en route. 

Spend your time in Wellington at the Te Papa Museum to learn about New Zealand’s history.

Head up to Mount Victoria for some lovely views over the city. And spend at least one evening eating and drinking on Cuba Street .

New Zealand South Island Road Trip

New Zealand South Island road trips are more common and, honestly, more adventurous than those on the North Island.

But clearly, if you’re visiting New Zealand you should plan to see both the North and South Islands. If you’re short on time, however, and you can only visit one island, the South Island has more dramatic scenery and adventure activities.

Park up on the ferry and get ready to enjoy some spectacular views as you come toward Picton through the Marlborough Sounds on your crossing to the South Island of New Zealand.

This is, of course, weather-dependent. I’ve done this crossing twice, once in the winter and once in the summer.

The former was a crossing of wind and rain and not much else. Check out this map of the South Island to provide some frame of reference for your trip and add to your itinerary beyond our recommendations below.

This section of our New Zealand South Island road trip is littered with some awesome stop-off points.

There are plenty of hikes and places to explore on the edge of the Marlborough Sounds as you follow the coast around reaching the small city of Nelson.

There’s plenty to keep you occupied here for a few days. 

Beyond Nelson, it’s a straight shot to Kaiteriteri , a town on the very edge of the Abel Tasman National Park.

There is plenty of great hiking through the park. But you should also consider kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park .

This area of New Zealand always leads to difficult decisions. Head straight to the West Coast via Murchison and the Buller Gorge, cut across the South Island via Hammer Springs, or loop back around via the Marlborough Wine Region. Decisions decisions. 

Since we’re planning to head to Kaikoura, we’re going to look at the latter two options (don’t worry we will get to the west coast I promise). 

If you’re a fan of wine and coastal scenery then head to Kaikoura via the Marlborough Wine Region stopping in at various vineyards along the way.

The alternative is to head for Hammer Springs via the Buller Gorge. Spend a night in Hammer Springs soaking in hot pools or just enjoying the scenery, then hot foot it down to Kaikoura. 

Kaikoura is one of the wildlife capitals of New Zealand. The vast majority of this can be found in the waters surrounding the peninsula which is home to a staggering array of wildlife.

Whether you want to watch whales and albatross, swim with dolphins, or kayak with seals it’s up to you. 

From Kaikoura head south and back to the West Coast via the stunning Arthurs Pass National Park .

Although this route does involve some extra kilometres on the road, I promise you it’s absolutely worth it. 

This gorgeous National Park is rarely visited in comparison to others in New Zealand. There are numerous hikes available as well as plenty of places to simply pull up and enjoy the scenery. 

The Jackson Retreat Alpine Holiday Park is a great option for those who want to spend a night in the area.

As well as spectacular views over the national park itself, the park also has its own glow worm trail and hike to a lovely waterfall. 

Coming via Arthurs Pass will spit you back onto the west coast just north of Hokitika , a town famous for its gorge and beaches.

If you want to can double back north along the west coast road toward Punakaiki and Westport before doubling back on yourself and heading back down towards Hokitika. 

From Hokitika, it’s a straight shot south down the wild west coast to the small town of Haast . On your way, you will pass through glacier country.

Around both the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers numerous short hikes offer some pretty amazing views. 

The views on the entire journey down are pretty spectacular, no doubt you’ll be stopping plenty of times to take photos. 

From Haast, you have 2 options. Follow the Haast Pass through to the beautiful Wanaka.

Or head due south to Jackson Bay , the end of the line on the west coast.

The latter of these offers empty roads and stunning desolate beaches. With small mountains jutting out of the land a couple of hundred metres from the ocean’s edge, the view when taking a dip is stunning.

If you head down to Jackson Bay then double for Haast and then take cross the Haast Pass through to Wanaka. 

The journey through the Haast Pass is full of stunning scenery, short hikes, and some gorgeous waterfalls with the blue pools being particularly beautiful.

Make sure you have a good pair of walking boots as Wanaka is full of awesome hiking trails offering some breathtaking views. 

Many people also choose to go hiking in Mount Aspiring National Park on the way to Wanaka.

Make sure your camera is charged because this drive is a beauty.

Taking you past the stunning Crown Range and The Remarkables as you enter Queenstown this journey is truly special. 

I’d also recommend heading up to the tiny town of Arrowtown which is in between Wanaka and Queenstown.

From Queenstown take a day trip up to the stunning little town of Glenorchy . This drive is also an absolute stunner.

No doubt about it, the drive from Queenstown to Te Anau is an absolute stunner.

From here the road splits; north to Milford Sound and South to Doubtful Sound.

From Te Anau to Milford Sound is probably more spectacular than the route down to the edges of Lake Manapouri from where Doubtful Sound cruises depart. 

Milford Sound is one of the most popular destinations in the country and is a must on a road trip of New Zealand’s South Island. Many people visit Milford Sound as a day trip from Queenstown.

But if you’re driving your own car on a road trip, you have the luxury of visiting Milford Sound on your own time and spending some time there. Then you can continue on after seeing the famous Milford Sound.

However, of the sounds, it is Doubtful Sound that I feel is the more spectacular of the two.

At 3 times the length and 10 times the area of its more well-known cousin, it is simply awe-inspiring. 

This gorgeous but rarely visited national park is bypassed by the main SH1 highway, enjoying a calm and carefree life far away from the majority of travellers that flock to New Zealand’s shores.

Winding country roads, breathtaking coastal scenery, and oodles of hiking trails are just the start of this part of your road trip.

Head down Curio Bay and Porpoise Bay to experience some of the park’s most famous residents – the curious Hectors Dolphins that are sometimes keen to come to socialise with swimmers. 

From the Catlins head to the gorgeous Otago Peninsula . This is another wildlife haven with albatross viewing and seal kayaking on offer.

At night head over to the Royal Albatross Centre to watch the Little Blue Penguins returning to their nests after a day hunting out in the open ocean. 

The eastern portions of the peninsula are home to some gorgeous beaches and equally stunning hiking trails which are well worth checking out.

This gorgeous drive follows the coast up through the town of Omaru through Twizel and onto one of New Zealand’s most stunning sights – Mount Cook .

As you follow the coast up from the Otago Peninsula make sure you stop in at Omaru to check out the town’s funky steampunk vibe.

If you stay the night there is an additional Little Blue Penguin colony that you can observe in the evening.

From Omaru journey inland towards the small town of Twizel . This is a gateway to Mount Cook National Park, with many using it as a stopping point to maximise the enjoyment of the drive to New Zealand’s highest peak.

This is because the drive along Lake Pukaki , towards Mount Cook is simply breathtaking, and maybe one of the most stunning drives in the country.

Therefore it makes sense to do it first thing in the morning when you have the best light and the fewest people.

The road up to Mount Cook is littered with stunning viewpoints. However, Peter’s lookout is probably the pick of the bunch. 

If you’re in a campervan make sure you head for the Whitehorse campsite . This awesome DOC site is the starting point for the Hooker Valley Trail and the Kea Point Track . 

Also, make sure you check out the hikes around the Tasman Glacier as well. 

This long but stunning drive takes you along the banks of Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo is one of New Zealand’s most gorgeous lakes.

Next you’ll head through the heart of Canterbury, and onto the Banks Peninsula , which is one of the most picturesque places in New Zealand. 

Along the south edge of Lake Pukaki stop in at the Alpine Salmon Shop to chow down on some excellent sashimi.

Make sure you check out the Church of the Good Shepherd on the banks of Lake Tekapo.

There are some rather lovely hikes in the area, plus some awesome stargazing to be had from the Mount John Observatory . 

There are a fair few quaint towns that you may want to stop in en route. The small town of Fairlie is famous for its bakery which serves some truly spectacular pies and close proximity to the Mount Dobson ski field.

The small town of Lake Tekapo is also a lovely place to stop. There are lots of hikes and a Dark Sky Reserve where you can stargaze.

If you’re here in the winter then Mount Hutt is another worthy skiing spot. However, you will definitely need snow chains on your tires. 

Bypass Christchurch and make a beeline for the small town of Akaroa , the main town on the stunning Banks Peninsula.

Spend a few days exploring the many hiking trails that crisscross the peninsula.

Head over to Okains Bay to explore and relax on this stunning and often deserted beach. 

If you fancy getting up close to some of the area’s wildlife there are some excellent dolphin swimming and watching tours .

Christchurch is the final stop on this NZ road trip. A short drive from Akaroa, it certainly makes a pleasant change 

Christchurch is well known for its botanical gardens and cathedral. The latter is still being held up with a mixture of structural support and scaffolding after the 2011 earthquake.

It’s still fenced off, acting as a timely reminder of New Zealand’s precarious position at the hands of Mother Nature.

Christchurch To Auckland Road Trip

If you’re looking for a picturesque and thrilling road trip in New Zealand , look no further than a Christchurch to Auckland road trip (or indeed the reverse Auckland to Christchurch road trip).

This journey is packed with stunning landscapes, charming towns, and exciting attractions that will make for unforgettable memories. From the rugged coastline of Kaikoura to the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua, there’s something for everyone on this adventure-filled route.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to New Zealand or a returning traveller looking for your next big adventure, this road trip promises to be an experience like no other. So buckle up and get ready for an epic journey through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

This route is for a 7-day trip, but I have also included suggestions for additional stops if you have more time available.

Day 1 – Christchurch

Christchurch is a city with a rich history and vibrant culture. Known as the “Garden City,” Christchurch boasts an abundance of parks and gardens that are perfect for picnics, strolls, and outdoor activities.

In addition to its natural beauty, Christchurch also has plenty of cultural attractions that are worth exploring. The Canterbury Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s past, while art galleries like the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū showcase contemporary works from local and international artists.

Christchurch is also the location of the 2011 earthquake that damaged many significant buildings and caused the deaths of 185 people. In the years since that tragic event, the city has rebuilt and there are even a few buildings dedicated to the event.

For those interested in geology and earthquakes, Quake City makes for an interesting visit. The Cardboard Cathedral was built after the demolition of the landmark cathedral in the city centre, using cardboard as one of its primary construction materials.

Another suggestion is the International Antarctic Centre, a short drive from the city centre. Most scientific expeditions to Antarctica leave from Christchurch, and a museum showcases the history of Antarctic exploration, as well as some of the challenges of everyday life for those who spend time living and working in Antarctica.

Where to Stay in Christchurch

Day 2 – Kaikoura

Kaikoura is best known for whale and dolphin watching, however as these tours tend to start early in the day I recommend joining a tour on Day 3, unless you want to leave Christchurch very early.

Head north up State Highway 1 from Christchurch past the rolling hills and rivers of New Zealand’s Canterbury region. Stop in Waipara for lunch at one of the many winery restaurants in the town.

Make a few stops along the way to enjoy the scenery until you reach Kaikoura. Situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island , this charming town offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Head to the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway to get some ocean views and see the Ohau Point seal colony. You may even see dolphins and whales from the walkway if you are lucky.

If you prefer flora over fauna, the nearby lavender farm might be of interest. Using different varietals to ensure year-round blooms, Lavendyl Lavender Farm makes for a relaxing visit with gardens, a cafe and a gift shop.

Where to Stay in Kaikoura

🛏️ Sudima Kaikoura is next to the beach with a restaurant on site.

🛏️ Dolphin Lodge is a hostel with cheap dorm rooms near the water.

Drive Christchurch to Kaikoura: 2hrs 30min, 113 miles

Day 3 – Blenheim

Start your day with a whale-watching tour. There are resident sperm whales in the area and seasonal visits from orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales. Dolphins are also frequently seen playing in the waters around Kaikoura.

You can choose from a catamaran or kayak tour, or even a whale-watching flight if budget isn’t a concern. The tour start times depend on the season, and you will need to book in advance.

After hopefully spotting many marine animals, head to State Highway 1 again and head further north to Blenheim. Blenheim is located in the Marlborough region, an area famous for winemaking.

This charming town is home to some of the world’s best vineyards and wineries, making it an ideal destination for wine enthusiasts. New Zealand is renowned for its wine and Marlborough is the biggest wine region in the country. With its stunning landscapes, warm climate, and friendly locals, Blenheim offers visitors an authentic taste of what New Zealand has to offer.

One of the main attractions in Blenheim is the Marlborough Wine Trail. This trail takes visitors through some of the most beautiful vineyards and wineries in the region .

Hire a bike or join a tour and spend the afternoon visiting a couple of wineries. There are several within an easy distance of Blenheim, and it’s one of the most popular wine-tasting regions in the country.

Where to Stay in Blenheim

🛏️ Blenheim Palms Motel is centrally located and some rooms have spa baths.

Drive Kaikoura to Blenheim: 1hr 45mins, 80 miles

Day 4 – Ferry to Wellington

Leave Blenheim and head towards Picton to catch the Interislander ferry. The ferry journey lasts 3 1/2 hours, and takes you through Queen Charlotte Sound and across the Cook Strait.

Any trip to New Zealand should include some time in Wellington, and as it sits at the southern tip of the North Island, it is the perfect mid-point for your Christchurch to Auckland Road Trip.

Tip: the timetables adjust according to the time of year, and certain ferries do not run every day of the week. Book in advance and ensure you have checked in at the ferry terminal at least 1 hour before departure.

Where to Stay in Wellington (2 nights)

Most hotels in Wellington don’t offer parking so you will need to look at parking options.

🛏️ QT Wellington is a quirky hotel with an excellent restaurant and interesting artwork.

🛏️ Marion Hostel offers budget dorm rooms in an otherwise expensive city.

Day 5 – Wellington

Spend a day exploring Wellington. Wellington, the charming capital city of New Zealand situated on the southern tip of the North Island , is a must-visit destination for any New Zealand road trip. Known for its vibrant culture and friendly locals, Wellington has something to offer everyone.

A visit to the ‘coolest little capital in the world’ isn’t complete without a stroll along the popular waterfront promenade with a flat white from one of the city’s many coffee shops.

The scenic walkway offers views of the harbour and provides access to some of Wellington’s best cafes and restaurants. Check out Cuba Street’s independent cafes and shops, if you feel like a bit of shopping.

For those who love history, a trip to Te Papa National Museum is a must-see attraction. This world-class museum showcases New Zealand’s unique cultural heritage with interactive exhibits that are both informative and entertaining. Best of all, entrance to the main collection is free.

If you’re looking for outdoor activities in Wellington, take the cable car up to the Botanic Gardens and stroll back down past the beautiful rose garden.

Day 6 – Rotorua

This will be the longest driving day on the trip, but it is a great drive. You’ll pass through Tongariro National Park with views of Mt Tongariro. You’ll drive along the shore of Lake Taupo – created by two of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in Earth’s history.

Rotorua is known for its stunning natural beauty and geothermal activity. It’s also a hub for Maori culture and history, making it an ideal destination for those looking to learn more about the country’s indigenous people.

One of the main attractions in Rotorua is its geothermal parks. Places like Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and Te Puia offer visitors the chance to witness bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and hot springs up close.

The sulfuric smell may take some getting used to, but it’s worth it for the unique experience. There are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking in nearby areas such as Whakarewarewa Forest.

Another draw to Rotorua is its rich Maori culture. There are several cultural tours you can participate in to watch traditional Maori dances and songs and eat a hangi feast.

Drive Wellington to Rotorua: 6 hours, 280 miles.

Day 7 – Auckland

There are two routes I would recommend for the drive between Rotorua and Auckland.

The first route is a long drive with a detour to Waitomo, to visit the famous glowworm caves. The caves were formed over millions of years by the forces of water and limestone, creating a network of tunnels and chambers that stretch for miles beneath the surface.

But it’s not just the incredible geology that makes these caves so special – it’s also the thousands of tiny glowworms that call them home.

If you have a few extra days I would highly recommend starting your road trip further south in Queenstown. Queenstown sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by the mountains of the Southern Alps. It’s a beautiful place for both relaxing and thrill chasing.

There are many adventure activities in Queenstown such as skydiving and jetboating, and it is also located in an area significant for winemaking – Central Otago. You can also find several day tours from Queenstown , including to the magnificent Milford Sound.

Abel Tasman National Park

Squeeze in an extra day in the South Island before you take the ferry to Wellington and explore this national park. It offers breathtaking views of golden beaches, sparkling waters, and lush forests. The park has a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy, including hiking and kayaking.

Head southbound on State Highway one through the lush farmland and dairy pastures of the Waikato region. The Bombay Hills mark the outer boundary of the greater Auckland area and its here you turn inland towards Matamata. This is the real Middle Earth, and you'll see many locations used in the filming of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit, as well as visiting the actual set of Hobbiton.

Become immersed in the The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films when you visit the actual Hobbiton movie set. Located just outside of Matamata in the heart of the lush Waikato farming region, your tour will begin with a drive through a picturesque sheep farm. The drive around the edge of New Zealand's largest lake leads you to Turangi, the self proclaimed Trout Fishing Capital. Skirting Tongariro National Park , one of New Zealand’s three world heritage sites and clouds permitting you can see the 2,500 metre peak of the still volcanically active Mt. Ruapehu. You might recognise the symmetrical shape of Mt. Ngauruhoe as this was used as the scenery of Mt. Doom in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Heading south you pass through the rural towns of Taihape, Mangaweka and Bulls before arriving on the Kapiti Coast. The coastal seaside towns of Paraparaumu, Paekakariki and Plimmerton are worth a short detour before arriving into the capital city of Wellington. Plan to take most of the day for this drive. Wellington City is New Zealand's capital. It sits on a wonderful deep natural harbour and is surrounded by bush clad hills. The city centre itself is quite compact (only around 1 square kilometre) and so exploring on foot is relatively easy. From your city centre accommodation you can easily stroll the cafes and restaurants around Courtenay Place and if you arrive early enough New Zealand;s national museum, Te Papa, is also close by.

Taking a night tour of Zealandia wildlife eco-sanctuary is an unforgettable experience and one that comes highly recommended. A conservation success and safe haven for some of New Zealand's rarest native animals, Zealandia is home to many remarkable species of birds, reptiles and insects living wild within a beautiful 225 hectare (one square mile) valley, just 10 minutes from the central city. Your tour begins with an interactive exhibition before you walk through the gates of Zealandia predator-exclusion fence into the sanctuary. Your guide will then lead you on a torch-light walk through the native New Zealand bush. Possible sights include Kiwi foraging on the forest floor, tuatara hunting for food, glowworms shining, tiny Maud Island frogs in their enclosure, pateke (brown teal) ducks feeding at night and kaka (parrots) coming in to roost. Zealandia is one of the best places to see kiwi in the wild. The 92 km journey between Wellington and Picton takes around 3 hours and has been described as 'one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world'. Red Rocks is home to a seal colony and Oterangi Bay is the site which recorded the country's highest ever wind speed of 268 kph (167 mph). Day 1 Christchurch to Twizel

Distance 300km - driving time 3.5 hours.

Begin your journey by picking up your campervan at the  airport in Christchurch , then head out on the Inland Scenic Route via the charming country town of Rangiora, home to a collection of wonderful heritage buildings, including one of Canterbury's oldest wooden churches.

Your route will take you across the rich agricultural lands of the Canterbury Plains and through the old coal mining town of Glentunnel, before you start the ascent to  Mount Hutt . One of New Zealand's largest ski areas, in season Mount Hutt has big snow, with great skiing and snowboarding.

Further down the road you’ll reach the charming country town of Geraldine, where arts and crafts are the order of the day, while the local car museum is also worth a look. Passing through Fairlie – the gateway to the Mackenzie Country, named after a legendary local sheep rustler – you’ll ultimately reach the stunning vista of Lake Tekapo. At the southern end of the lake, you’ll find the renowned Church of the Good Shepherd, which makes for a great photo stop, especially when the sun is out. If you’re after a coffee and something to eat, it’s also worth visiting the  Reflections Café & Restaurant . As you head to your pitstop for the night in Twizel, enjoy the views across the southern end of Lake Pukaki.

Day 2 Twizel to Queenstown

Distance 199km - driving time 2 hours 30 mins.

The closest town to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, home to New Zealand’s highest mountain, Twizel was built in 1968 as the base for the impressive Upper Waitaki Power Development, the largest hydro-electric power scheme ever undertaken in New Zealand. Also known as the film location of Gondor, from the blockbuster Lord of the Rings movies, there’s plenty to do in Twizel before you hit the road.

Once you’re underway, the short drive south to Omarama will take you past the turnoff for the intriguing Paritea cliffs, sharp pinnacles and ridges of clay which are constantly being exposed by the active Osler fault line. As you approach Omarama, keep an eye out for the giant merino statue, which will remind you you’re in sheep farming country. Also, if you’ve never been gliding before, then Omarama is the place to try it with  Glide Omarama . Your pilot can guide you over the ridges and valleys of the Mackenzie Basin, or venture into the majestic Southern Alps, as thermal winds take gliders to altitudes of 10,000 metres.

The last part of your day’s journey takes you to the adventure capital of Queenstown. Test your nerve with a visit to the world's first commercially-operated bungy jumping site, at the historic Kawarau Bridge, or try out the Shotover Canyon Swing – the world’s highest rope swing. Your day isn’t complete without a ride in the  Shotover Jet , which twists and turns its way through the towering, rocky canyons of the Shotover River.

Head for the  Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park , on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, for your night’s stay.

Day 3 Queenstown to Fox Glacier

Departing Queenstown, head for Wanaka via Arrowtown and Cromwell - please note our campervans are prohibited from travelling over the Crown Range. Stop in quaint Arrowtown for a morning coffee and pastry and enjoy the high street that takes you back to the days of gold mining fervor. Wanting to learn more - the award-winning Lakes District Museum will teach you all about the region including the rich history in Gold Mining. For lunch, stop off in Cromwell, known as the fruit basket of South Island. There are plenty of roadside stalls selling fruits fresh off the trees in summer and autumn - so make sure you stock up on these tasty delights before continuing on to Wanaka via Luggate.

Wanaka, which is set against the backdrop of  Mount Aspiring National Park , is known as an adventure destination, with adrenaline-pumping activities including heli-skiing, canyoning, climbing and skydiving. Also check out Stuart Landsborough’s Puzzling World, where 1.5 kilometres of passages will keep you entertained for hours.

Just out of Wanaka you’ll reach the shores of Lake Hawea, followed closely by the northern end of Lake Wanaka. Fill up and stretch your legs in Makarora before you tackle the Haast Pass, which is one of only three roads to cross over the Southern Alps. Keep your eyes on the road, even as you enjoy the passing waterfalls and river scenery.

After you’ve traversed the Haast River via the longest one-lane bridge in New Zealand, you’ll emerge from the forest to be greeted by the town of Haast and views of the Tasman Sea. Just north of Haast is Lake Moeraki, a peaceful forest lake with good fishing. If you have time, you can take a 45-minute sojourn to visit the penguin colony at Monro Beach, while up the road at Lake Paringa, you can enjoy a delicious meal of salmon at the local salmon farm.

Continue along the dramatic coast road north to Fox Glacier, where you can check in for the night at  Fox Glacier Top 10 Holiday Park .

Day 4 Fox Glacier to Westport

Distance 296km - driving time 2 hours 30 mins.

One of the largest of the South Island's more than 3000 glaciers, and among the most accessible glaciers in the world, Fox Glacier can be reached on foot or by air, so before you leave town, stop into  Fox Glacier Guiding  for your personal glacier experience.

Further north is Franz Josef Glacier, where you can walk to the terminal of the glacier in about 10 minutes. You might also want to grab some morning tea here – the streets of Franz Josef township are lined with cosy cafes and eateries.

Next up is Hokitika, a former gold mining town whose currency nowadays is greenstone (NZ jade). Take the opportunity to watch it being carved as you wander among the town’s lovely old buildings. You might also want to investigate the museum and do the historical walk.

Ten kilometres south of Greymouth, the West Coast’s largest town, you’ll hit Shantytown. Step back in time to the 1860s gold rush as you stroll amongst a working steam engine, sawmill, foundry, and stables.

Continue on to Westport where you’ll spend the night.

Day 5 Westport to Nelson

Distance 222km - driving time 2 hours.

Although predominantly known as a coal mining town, Westport is also a base for outdoor adventures. Black water rafting, jet boating, horse trekking and surf rafting offer opportunities for a slice of outdoor excitement, while a visit to the local seal colony is perfect for nature lovers.

The road to Nelson is scenic and interesting. At Hawks Crag you’ll drive under a dramatic rock overhang, before arriving in the dark, forbidding Buller Gorge, where you can try out New Zealand's longest swingbridge at  Buller Gorge Swingbridge Adventure & Heritage Park .

Your journey will then take you through Murchison, which is surrounded by an array of rivers, including the Mangles, Matiri, Matakitaki, and the impressive Buller. Known as a canoeing and kayaking paradise, it might be worth taking the time for a relaxing paddle before you leave Murchison. Also, stop in to the district museum and find out about the huge earthquake which nearly destroyed the town in 1929.

The end of your day’s drive sees you arriving into the city of Nelson – overnight at the  Tahuna Beach Holiday Park .

Day 6 Nelson to Wellington

Distance 210km - driving time 2 hours.

Nelson is home to an eclectic community of artisans and craftsmen, and if you happen to be in town on a Saturday, be sure to check out the Nelson markets, regarded as one of the best in New Zealand.

From Nelson travel on to Blenheim, the heart of the Marlborough wine-growing region, with over 20 wineries within easy driving distance of the town. The majority of wineries welcome visitors for wine tastings and cellar door sales, so you may want to (safely) sample a few drops before you leave town, and grab a bottle or two to take with you.

After Blenheim, you’ll travel north to Picton, the crossing over point between the South and North Islands. A picturesque seaside town in its own right, take a little time to explore before you board the daily Interislander Ferry service for your onwards journey to Wellington.

The intricate waterways of the Marlborough Sounds make up a fifth of the New Zealand coastline, and your journey through the Marlborough Sounds and across the Cook Strait is a beautiful and memorable 2- or 3-hour voyage, depending on which ferry you catch. Both the fast and the cruise-style ferries can transport your Britz Campervan – just make sure you  book ahead . Arrive into New Zealand’s picturesque capital city, Wellington, where you will spend the night.

Day 7 Wellington to Greytown

Distance 99km - driving time 1 hour.

Dubbed the ‘Capital of Cool’, cosmopolitan Wellington is famous for a vibrant creative culture, fuelled by great food, wine, craft beer, coffee and events. Take a stroll around the gorgeous waterfront of Oriental Bay before climbing the Southern Walk for beautiful city views from Mt Victoria. Visit the national museum, Te Papa, and try the interactive exhibits while you learn about NZ culture. Also, ride the historic Wellington Cable Car, which runs from Lambton Quay up to Kelburn, and offers delightful views of the city across the University grounds.

Heading out of Wellington, take the drive to Martinborough. You’ll wind through the picturesque Hutt Valley before climbing over the Rimutaka Range and descending into the tranquillity of the Wairarapa region. In the wine village of Martinborough, spend the afternoon sampling gourmet delights at award-winning wineries, olive groves, cafes, pubs and restaurants. It’s easy to park your campervan in town and walk everywhere, so make some time to do a little bit of shopping before you leave as well.

Drive north through the Wairarapa to your overnight stop in Greytown.

Day 8 Greytown to Napier

Distance 252km - driving time 2 hours 30 mins.

Start your day with a croissant from The French Baker in Greytown’s Main Street, before spending the morning perusing the town’s beautifully-restored Victorian colonial buildings and top-notch shops. Also visit the Papawai Marae, the site of the first Maori Parliament, and its wharenui (meeting house), which dates back to 1888.

Continue your drive into the north east of the North Island via Masterton, the largest town in the Wairarapa region and home to The Wool Shed, the National Museum of Sheep and Shearing. Further on is Dannevirke, known for its Scandinavian heritage, which dates to 1872 when 21 Danish and Norwegian families arrived to settle the district. History buffs will want to explore the town cemetery, while the Dannevirke Fantasy Cave is a must for families with young children.

Push on to Hastings and Napier, and marvel at the Art Deco and Spanish Mission-style architecture which has made the two neighbouring towns famous. Stay in Napier tonight.

Day 9 Napier to Taupo

Distance 141km - driving time 1 hour 15 mins.

New Zealand's oldest wine-making region and a leading producer of award-winning red wines, the Hawke’s Bay region around Napier is a veritable treasure trove of delights. Pop into one of the region’s many wineries as you make your way north-west towards Taupo, enjoying the scenery as valleys, plains and rugged hills whiz by.

Lake Taupo is the largest lake in NZ, making Taupo ideal for a raft of water-based activities. From trout fishing, to sailing, water skiing, jetboating, kayaking, parasailing and jet skiing, the water is where it’s at in Taupo. Throw in skydiving, horse riding, mountain biking, trekking, abseiling, and rock climbing, and it’s tough to make a choice.

Once you’ve had your fill of adventure, head to the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand, the spectacular Huka Falls. At Huka Falls, the Waikato River squeezes through a 20-metre wide gorge and over a 20-metre drop. View the falls from either side (there's a foot bridge to cross over).

Taupo is also the gateway to the Tongariro River, Tongariro National Park, Kaimanawa Ranges, and the Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas.

Day 10 Taupo to Rotorua

Distance 81km - driving time 45 mins.

Hit the road early for your trip up the road to Rotorua. Make sure you plan a visit to the  Wai O Tapu Thermal Wonderland  along the way, where bubbling mud pools and colourful sulphur-crusted lakes await your discovery. Wai-O-Tapu’s resident Lady Knox Geyser erupts each day at 10:15 am, so make sure you‘re there for the show.

When you get to Rotorua, stop in for a cultural experience at the living Maori village of  Whakarewarewa . Enjoy a Maori hangi meal, watch traditional song and dance, and even get a personalised tattoo!

After lunch, head to the beautiful Blue and Green Lakes for an easy 40-minute walk. Although side-by–side, the lakes really are two different colours!

Seeing as you’re in the area, why not stay at the  Blue Lake Top 10 Holiday Park  tonight?

Day 11 Rotorua to Waitomo

Head out of Rotorua via the Thermal Explorer Highway and make your way west to the Waitomo area. On the way, Lord of the Rings fans will want to stop in Matamata, which is home to the Hobbiton movie set, with tours departing daily.

Once you reach Waitomo, take a guided tour through the underground grottos of the  Waitomo Glowworm Caves . Enjoy the world-famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and soak in the serenity and beauty of the scene. Also make time for Waitomo’s longest underground walking tour through Ruakuri Cave and gaze at thousands of brilliant limestone formations.

Stay in Waitomo tonight.

Day 12 Waitomo to Auckland

Distance 194km - driving time 2 hours.

On the last day of your itinerary, head north from Waitomo to Hamilton. Located on the banks of the Waikato River, Hamilton is a great spot for some morning tea and a scenic riverside walk before you complete the rest of your journey to Auckland.

1 christchurch.

Although you’ve just picked up your new GO Rentals car, don’t be in too big a hurry to leave Christchurch as there is plenty to explore. Take the time on your first day to explore the ‘Garden City’ , the largest city on the South Island where you can relax your way into your latest adventure.

2 Christchurch to Hanmer Springs (134km – 1 hour 55mins)

An early start will take you the short drive north towards Hanmer Springs where a relaxing day awaits you. Surrounded by the beautiful Southern Alps with crisp alpine air, relax and unwind in the award-winning thermal pools or simply enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Hanmer Village and surrounding areas.

Wai Ariki Farm Park

If getting crinkly is not your thing, there are plenty of other attractions in Hanmer and one of the best is the Wai Ariki Farm Park. Offering a hands-on experience, Wai Ariki is home to some weird and wonderful animals which are sure to keep kids and adults amused for the morning. The Tibetan Yak are a particular favourite!

Although you have only just started on your epic kiwi adventure, we know some of you love a bit of retail therapy. With a fantastic range of boutique outlets including the quirky ‘Up the Garden Path’ and ‘Wink’, we’re sure you’ll find the shopping as relaxing as a trip to the thermal pools.

Monteith’s Brewery Bar

If you’ve not managed to sample the delights of one of New Zealand’s favourite beers, fear not! Although it may not offer the full brewery tour experience, The Monteith’s brewpub in Hanmer is certainly a great place to go and try your favourite Monteith’s ale and relax and unwind. Situated right in the heart of the town, there is a great vibe to match the great beer so whatever you have been up to during the day, this is a great place to end your night. Our top tip is the Monteith’s Southern Pale Ale. When in Rome as they say!

3 Hanmer Springs to Picton

After a day spent relaxing in Hanmer, you’ll be ready to hit the road again and after a day off yesterday, your GO Rentals car will be raring to GO!

Swim with the dolphins (130 km – 2 hours 6 mins from Hanmer Springs)

Heading out of Hanmer Springs, take the road north heading towards Blenheim. A great stop off on the way is Kaikoura which is a whale watcher’s delight. Not only that, this is a great opportunity for you to take a dip and swim with the dolphins at the right time of the year – this must be on a few wish lists so let’s get it ticked off!

Cellar View Café and Restaurant

Kaikoura is one of New Zealand’s best locations for seeing marine life including whales and dolphins. It is also the home to the Cellar View Cafe and Restaurant. This place serves up some pretty amazing dishes matched only by the stunning views out to the pacific. It’s easy to let an afternoon drift by, enjoying the delicious food and admiring the endless view. Nice.

It’s not just dolphins that pass through the waters around Kaikoura though and if you time things right, there is also the chance to see various species of whale as well as seals and birds.

Wine tasting and much more (129km – 1 hour 47mins)

Marlborough is a world-famous wine region and it would be rude not to sample some of the local delights on your way through (hopefully it may be a more sociable time of the day!). There are plenty of wineries that will gladly take you through their wide range of vinos from a fruity pinot noir to the flagship wine of the region, Sauvignon Blanc. There are some famous vineyards down here like Cloudy Bay but we recommend sampling some of the more boutique wineries – a great way to get around is on a bike although be careful if you have a few vinos on the way as you may get a bit wobbly! Wine tours by bike offer bike hire or guided tours which helps as they will transport you back to Blenheim.

Marlborough Complete Guide

If wine is not your thing, there are also lots of microbreweries in the region so this is the perfect place to stock up for the road trip ahead.

Marlborough Sounds and the Queen Charlotte Track (28.1km – 25 mins from Blenheim)

For those adventurous souls out there who love nothing more than strapping on a pair of hiking boots and heading off into the unknown, the Queen Charlotte Track offers you the perfect opportunity to explore rural New Zealand. Dominated by a bush-clad shoreline, the track takes you on an amazing journey through the Marlborough Sounds and the 70kms of track will energise even the most active.

From here it is a short hop to Picton where you will catch the ferry and leave the South Island behind. Tomorrow it’s time to hit New Zealand’s capital city!

4 Wellington

It might be small but New Zealand’s cool capital is jam-packed with things to do and places to see.

After arriving on the ferry, park your car and head for a walk around the waterfront where you’ll find the fascinating Museum of Wellington City and Sea in the old Harbour Board Bond Store, complete with its opulent 1920s board room and a complete teak cabin from an 1879 steamship. It’s not far from New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa – a futuristic multi-storeyed complex that forms one of the largest new museums in the world, with numerous interactive displays.

Amazing views

For the best panoramic views of the city and Port Nicholson all the way across to the Hutt Valley, head up to the lookout on Mt Victoria. The historic cannon on the summit was installed in 1877 and was fired each day as a time signal for many years. If you look down below, in the suburbs, you will spot the New Zealand Cricket Museum, located in the Old Grandstand at the Basin Reserve, not far from the Colonial Cottage Museum on the site of one of the original 1840 New Zealand Company Town acres.

Coffee culture

Grab a coffee (Wellington claims to have the best coffee in New Zealand) and visit the cool one-of-a-kind stores along Manners Mall and Cuba Street. When you’re on that street, notice the cool Bucket Fountain that doesn’t actually work the way it’s supposed to (take a close look at it and you’ll see the water doesn’t actually obey the easy bucket system and sometimes misses the buckets altogether).

Treaty of Waitangi

A visit to Archives New Zealand on 10 Mulgrave Street allows you to see the Treaty of Waitangi (the document that is considered the foundation of the country). You can also take a tour of the Beehive, the country’s parliament if you’re feeling politically inclined before taking a stroll along the waterfront, decorated with interesting sculptures and populated by numerous bars (including some decent craft beer spots).

Weta workshop

If you have some free time, we suggest a visit to the Weta Workshop, nestled away in the Miramar suburb. Weta is known worldwide for its weird and wonderful creations for film, including creatures, makeup and digital special effects for movies such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Avatar and The Chronicles of Narnia among others.

You can take the 45-minute guided tour through the workshop, which provides unique behind-the-scenes glimpses into the work of this award-winning company.

Wellington Complete Guide

5 Wellington to Tongariro Crossing (324km – 3 hours 57 mins)

After a day exploring our capital city, it’s time to give your new best friend a bit of a leg stretch and the drive out of Wellington and up to the Tongariro Crossing is a great place to start. Heading up SH1, your route will take you up the lower west coast of the North Island.

Palmerston North (140km – 1 hour 53 mins)

The first stop of the day will be in the small farming town of Palmerston North. As you drive up the west coast, you may want to pit stop at any one of the lovely beaches on the way including Foxton, Otaki and Waikanae which are all easily accessible from SH1. Although it’s the biggest town between Wellington and Taupo, Palmerston is pretty quiet and this will give you a true insight into Kiwi life. With a plethora of cafes to pick from, this is a great place for morning elevenses – go on, treat yourself to one of those amazing looking muffins!

Bulls (29.8km – 25 mins from Palmerston North)

There’s not much to say about Bulls but if quirky is what you want on this tour then quirky is what you will get. The only thing of note in this town is the clever (or not!) use of the town’s name by local businesses – unforget-a-bull and hospit-a-bull are two of our personal favourites – let us know yours!

Taihape (84.8km – 1 hour from Bulls)

Another quirky stop off on your way north is the ‘gumboot capital of the world’ – Taihape. The gumboot is the NZ equivalent of the Wellington boot and each year the town hosts Gumboot Day. If you’re lucky enough to be passing through in March, check it out and get involved in a bit of gumboot throwing – definitely one to tell the grandkids about!

Tongariro National Park (93.9km – 1 hour 5 mins from Taihape)

Your final destination for the day is at the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, often described as the best one day walk in New Zealand if not the world. There are many places providing accommodation and a lift to the start of the trail which takes you up into the Tongariro National Park. The walk itself is 19.4km and on average takes between 7-9 hours to complete. It reaches altitudes of over 1800m and is covered in snow during the winter months.

Make sure you book your return bus at the place you are staying – they will usually allow for a 10 hour day so people can take their time and enjoy the walk.

6 Tongariro Alpine Crossing

It’s a day out of your beloved hire car and a chance to stretch your own legs. The Tongariro Crossing is a must-do on many people’s lists when they head to NZ so make the most of your day. The weather can change quickly out on the walk so make sure you pack for all seasons from the sun cream to the warm base layers – even if it is a lovely sunny day when you set out, things can soon change out on the track.

A gentle start to the walk will soon be replaced by some gradual climbs before the steep ascent to Red Crater where you get some amazing views looking down to the Emerald Lakes. Make sure you have your camera at the ready as there are so many photo opportunities on the walk.

Lord of the Rings Fans

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan (we won’t hold it against you if you’re not – promise!) then this is the place for you. Home to the sinister Mordor, you will soon start to recognise landscapes from the trilogy and a look over to Mt Ngauruhoe should bring flashbacks of the infamous Mount Doom. If you have the fitness and the equipment, climbing to the summit of Mount Doom is a possible add on to your day but be aware that this is a steep climb and should only be carried out by experienced climbers.

By the end of the walk, you’ll probably feel like Frodo and Sam so treat yourself to a big feed and a cold beer at the end of a great day.

7 Tongariro Crossing to Taupo (72.7km – 57 mins)

After a day off the driving, we are going to ease you back in with a relatively short trip up to Taupo.

Heading out from the Tongariro your day starts with a scenic drive around the shores of NZ’s largest lake to the town that shares the same name – Taupo.

Golf challenge.

For you budding Tigers out there, Lake Taupo throws up a challenge – can you land your ball on a green floating in the middle of the lake? If the answer is yes, and more importantly, if you can get a hole in one, your trip to Lake Taupo just got a whole bunch better as there are some big prizes up for grabs. Even if you don’t play golf, it’s pretty satisfying just whacking balls into the lake!

8 Taupo to Rotorua (81.3km – 1 hour 8 mins)

You probably noticed it as soon as you drove into Rotorua – that sulphuric smell (no that wasn’t your fellow passengers!), the vents on the ground letting steam off, the boiling mud everywhere. You’ve arrived in New Zealand’s thermal wonderland.

Rotorua is bubbling (see what we did there?) with geothermal activity and you can see it (and smell it) wherever you look. But one of the best places to see it in all its glory is Wai-O-Tapu, a place that encompasses a range of different volcanic activities, including the world-famous Champagne Pool and the Lady Knox Geyser. You’ll want to spend a good couple of hours wandering around Wai-O-Tapu and visiting all the different lakes, mud pools and geysers. And…Wai-O-Tapu is a GO Play partner so you get all this geothermal fun with a 10% discount. Result.

For stunning examples of Maori culture that you’ll not find anywhere else, pay a visit to Te Puia (about five minutes from the centre of town). You’ll learn about Maori culture and costumes from Maori people themselves, as well as witness a few more examples of geothermal activity (we’re still in Rotorua after all). Make sure you attend the Maori culture performance at the Marae (by the entrance) and visit the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute is located inside as well. Te Puia also includes a live kiwi bird enclosure (a rare opportunity to see the New Zealand icon) and the famous Pohutu Geyser.

Zorbing first started in New Zealand so what better place to experience it than right in the heart of the country where it all began? Zorbing (which is basically rolling down some hills inside a giant inflatable ball) is one of those activities on many people’s bucket lists. Tick that off yours now before we continue heading south.

Mamaku Blue

New Zealand Caterpillar Experience

The New Zealand Caterpillar Experience will be another one of those unique places you probably don’t expect to find anywhere.

Located at 171 Fairy Springs Road, this is the work of Lindsay Willis, a man who has been collecting Caterpillar equipment for most of his life. We’re talking heavy machinery here, no small stuff. This is the world’s foremost collection of this sort of equipment and Willis keeps it all in excellent condition (with some of the oldest ones still in working order).

The displays are set alongside footage of some of the machinery at work, way back in the day, and you’ll get to see some trucks and bulldozers that are now the only examples left of their kind. Impressive stuff!

Rotorua Complete Guide

9 Rotorua to Coromandel Peninsula (208km – 2 hours 57 mins)

Not exactly the most obvious choice for a recommended touristic attraction but we’re talking about unique and quaint experiences that you’ll only get in New Zealand, right? So here’s one: a chainsaw collection at a Timber Museum in the small town of Putaruru, about an hour south of Hamilton. You don’t find that in many other places.

Blue Spring

Before you head out of Putaruru, stop for a visit to the international acclaimed Blue Spring with crystal clear blue waters. Pack a picnic and head along the Te Waihou Walkway to reach the spring. The walk takes about 1.5 hours each way and passes through rolling farmland, New Zealand native bush and even some waterfalls.

Mandatory waterfall photo taken, it’s time to keep heading south. Our next stop is Matamata.

Matamata (29.8km – 28 mins from Putaruru)

The town includes the set of Hobbiton from Peter Jackson’s movies and a guided tour of the movie set (starting from the Information Centre right on the main street) is a must-do for any visitor. You’ll be able to visit 44 unique hobbit holes (just like in the movies), including Bag End (Bilbo Baggins’ house), as you make your way through the Shire, passing iconic locations such as the Green Dragon Pub, the double arched bridge and the Party Tree. Photo After that, it’s time to continue north. Our next stop: Paeroa.

Giant L&P Bottle

Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway (7.7km – 7 mins from Paeroa)

Dust off the hiking boots, we’re going for a little walk. Well, sort of little – 7 kilometres.

The Karangahake Gorge Walkway features the remains of a historical railway nestled in a natural gorge setting. The walk will take you through relics of back in the day when the area was a big gold mining region. It follows the railway line through the gorge and alongside the Ohinemuri River, through the Victoria Battery Complex and ending in the Waikino Station (which includes a cafe for a much deserved post-walk beverage).

To get to the start of the walkway, park your rental car at the Karangahake Domain Car Park on SH2 between Waihi and Paeroa, and get your hiking boots on and off you go!

Waihi (13.2km – 12 mins from Karangahake)

As you head towards the peninsula, make sure you stop by the impressive Martha’s Mine in Waihi. You can take a goldmine tour and find out more about this important part of New Zealand history. Take some time to learn a bit more about the gold mining history, as there won’t be many other opportunities to do so during the trip.

Deep-sea fishing

The Coromandel is one of the best places on the North Island to head out deep sea fishing with a number of charter companies running trips daily throughout the summer months. Head out onto the water and catch yourself some dinner – red snapper are often in abundance and if you’re lucky you may snag yourself a kingfish or even a marlin! It’s a really relaxing way to spend a day out on the water and better still, if you bring home a catch, the local fish and chip shops will batter it for you for about 50 cents! Winner.

Deserted beaches

One of the more famous and most visited beaches in these parts is Cathedral Cove. There are a number of tour operators who will take you on a guided tour out to visit the sea caves and check out the towering cliffs of the Te-Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve.
