Dare to Roar: Unraveling The Ultimate Porsche 911 Safari Build That's Capturing Hearts

Dare to Roar: Unraveling The Ultimate Porsche 911 Safari Build That's Capturing Hearts

The Porsche 911, a symbol of speed and agility, has long dominated the racetrack and the dreams of automotive enthusiasts . However, an innovative wave has swept the car community, transforming this road icon into a rally-ready beast that thrives off the beaten path. At the heart of this renaissance is the 996 Porsche 911, a model often shadowed by its brethren but now finding its moment in the sun. This is not just any car modification tale; it's about the rebirth of the 996 through the daring lens of a safari build.

Porsche's late '90s gem, the 996 911, offers a unique combination of affordability, analog charm, and modern conveniences, making it an ideal candidate for a transformation that challenges norms. Enter the world of Safari builds , where the 996 is being elevated, quite literally, with kits that boost its ride height and capability without losing its soulful drive dynamics and rear weight bias that has endeared it to many.

The Mastermind Behind the Build: Kalmar Automotive

Leading this off-road charge is Kalmar Automotive , a Denmark-based pioneer in the realm of off-road Porsche conversions. With a history of reimagining models like the 964 and 993, Kalmar has ventured into the water-cooled domain with its 996-based RS-6, marking the first of its kind in its 'Adventure Range'. The philosophy? Transforming the 996 from a road guardian to a rally conqueror, opening up a new playground for driving aficionados.

The process starts with a customer's 996, which can be rear- or all-wheel drive. Kalmar then works its magic, elevating the car over three inches to match, and even surpass, the ground clearance of Porsche's own Cayenne. But that's only the beginning. The transformation includes adaptive, electronically-controlled shock absorbers, a custom limited-slip differential, upgraded driveshafts, and protection against the rough and tumble of off-road adventures. The result? A machine that respects its heritage while daring to explore new horizons.

A No-Frills Interior with a Focus on Performance

Inside, Kalmar eschews luxury for functionality. The sound-deadening materials and creature comforts typically found in the 911 are stripped away, making way for Recaro seats and a rear roll cage — essentials for the rugged trails. However, the melody of gravel against the wheel wells, accompanied by the iconic flat-six engine’s roar, promises a symphony like no other.

The 996 Safari: A Cost-Effective Gateway

While the allure of the Safari build is undeniable, it comes with a price tag significantly lower than Porsche's own Dakar offering, positioning the Kalmar 996 Safari as a more accessible albeit thrilling entry into the world of rally-inspired Porsches. The creators chose the 996 platform for its blend of affordability and availability, providing a gateway for enthusiasts to embark on their own off-road escapades without breaking the bank.

Revival of a Legend

The 996 Safari build is more than a car; it's a movement. As more enthusiasts and companies like Kalmar Automotive dare to push the boundaries, the 996 finds new life beyond the asphalt. It's a testament to the spirit of adventure, the allure of the off-beaten path, and the timeless appeal of the Porsche 911. As we watch this chapter unfold, one thing is clear: the 996 fans are keeping it not just weird, but wildly exhilarating.

For those of us not ready to embark on such a transformative journey, fear not. The 996 Safari build serves as a source of inspiration, a reminder that the spirit of innovation and the love for cars can turn an underappreciated model into a trailblazing icon. Let's keep our eyes on the horizon; the adventure is just beginning.

This 996 Porsche 911 Safari Build Is Seriously Impressive

Custom fabrication and a sweet green paint job are hard to resist.

911 Carrera

There's almost nothing more satisfying than seeing a car doing something it has no business doing, especially when it's done well. Some in the Porsche community agree, and over the years, many enthusiasts have heavily modified 911s to go off-road. Known as safari 911s, the cars feature raised suspension, beefy tires, and a host of other upgrades. However, very few safari builds reach the level of detail and craftsmanship that South African Johan De Bruyn put into his 996 build, courtesy of SafariProjek. The green Porsche features numerous upgrades and custom-fabricated parts, and the result is a car that has completely stolen our hearts.

De Bruyn said the pandemic gave him time to brainstorm the project he wouldn't typically have had. As he notes, many safari builds rely on older 911 models , such as the 964 and SC, so his 996 build is quite unique. His view was that the much-maligned cars are future classics , so the time was right to approach a build.

The project started with a 996 Carrera 4S. The car's four-wheel drive and wider body made it ideal for a safari build, but as De Bruyn quickly found out, most parts and support for such cars in the community centers around the older 911 models.

To turn the 911 into a mud monster, De Bruyn and his team had to redesign the car's suspension system and custom fabricated many of the components needed to raise the ride height and provide a comfortable off-road ride. The team turned to Reiger in Europe for shocks, the same units used by some Dakar Rally teams.

The 911's bodywork had to be modified, but again, no off-the-shelf solutions existed. De Bruyn said his team used a unique foam to form the bumpers and fabricated the bronzed steel inserts. Underneath, the car carries skid plates to protect it from bumps and bangs on the trail. The brakes were left alone, and OZ racing rims were added for an authentic rally look.

The safari movement is alive and well here in the States, too. Leh Keen turns out gnarly 911 conversions from his shop in Georgia, and Porsche itself will soon be in on the game with a factory-lifted 911 . The cars make relatively common appearances on auction sites, with the best selling for exorbitant sums.

Despite its reputation as a track- and backroad-killing sports car, the 911 makes a surprisingly excellent off-roader. The relative light weight and the unique balance created by its rear-engine design give the 911 a fun, tossable personality in the dirt.

The Keen Project Safari 911 first drive review: a time machine for any adventure

Joel Feder

Chad was running late, and we were already pressed for time. This entire plan was rushed and slapped together via a phone call and a few text messages over the weekend.

The Keen Project Safari 911 build No. 2 by former race car driver Lehman Keen was in Minneapolis for a short time to celebrate Porsche’s 70th birthday. As soon as I saw that my friends Chad and Luis had the car in town, I needed a stint behind the wheel.

I shot a text to Chad: “Where are you?”

Chad called back moments later and screamed over the wail of the special 911's flat-6 engine.

“Traffic. Road’s closed. Rerouting. Be there in a few minutes.”

Soon after, I heard the wail myself as the car entered Watertown, Minnesota. I turned to see my new highlight of the week: a white 1989 Porsche 911 Safari with driving lights ablaze in broad daylight.

Chad got out of the car wearing a blue sport coat, white dress shirt, sunglasses, jeans, and dress shoes—business casual exiting a rally fighter built for desert duty, and the irony was still perfect. He tossed me the keys after pleasantries. It was time to drive.

I opened the driver’s door with a loud click as I engaged the handle, plopped into the blue leather and plaid-covered race seat, and closed my eyes. Instantly my nostrils were filled with the musk of vintage German leather, plastic, carpet, and vinyl. My mind wandered back to my 1991 E34 M5— once again the regret of selling it burned , but didn’t last long.

“Are you ready for this?” Chad asked.

“Hell yes,” I said without thinking.

A quick turn of the key on the left-side of the dashboard—because this is a Porsche—and approximately 230 healthy horsepower from the chipped 3.2-liter flat-6 erupted to life. It was smooth, angry, and just waiting for me to give it the juice.

As we snaked our way across blacktop heading toward some county dirt roads, I was amazed at how quiet the 215/65 R16 KO2 tires were at 60 mph. The 4.0-inch lift combined with the beefy all-terrain tires soaked up any road imperfections, but a creaking noise emanated from the rear suspension.

The Keen Project Safari 911 No. 2

Chad told me those squeaks were the poly bushings, and I later learned from Keen that newer builds have poly bronze bushings that feature bronze inserts with serviceable grease, but the owner of this car doesn’t want to give the car up to have them installed.

When the rear KO2s hit the gravel road I buried the throttle. The tach instantly jumped as the flat-6 came alive, and revved all the way out to its 6,500 rpm redline before I grabbed the black wiffle ball shifter and threw the tight G50 gearbox into third gear.

I looked down and asked Chad how accurate the speedometer was.

“Dead on, why?” he said.

We hit 80 mph without effort. I began laughing, maniacally.

The flat-6 wailed as we blasted around the country dirt roads between 60 and 80 mph. Each time I approached a corner, I braked hard, cranked the wheel, waited for the rear end to settle, goosed the throttle, and the rear end kicked out as I dialed in countersteer and floored the accelerator. Gravel and dirt goes flying and Chad laughed: “Yeah, alright, you understand how to drive an air-cooled Porsche.”

This scene repeated for the next 40 minutes with laughter and smiles.

Finally, the white Safari 911 was heading toward blacktop again and I began to back off the throttle.

“Don’t do that, keep in it.” said Chad.

We flew onto the blacktop at speed and the car didn’t flinch.

“That’s the beauty of this thing. It’s happy with whatever,” he said.

The Keen Project Safari 911 No. 2

We headed over to another gravel road that went around Lake Waconia, but we took it slower with a neighborhood on one side and the lake on another. As I cruised along it dawned on me: You would never ever do this with a non-Safari 911, and definitely not with a RWB or Singer 911.

As we snaked our way back from farm country back into Watertown, I took mental pictures of the interior. The two metal switches on the dashboard to control the four driving lights up front, the black metal wiffle ball shifter, the blue carpet where the rear seat should be, the blue leather on the race seats, and the most amazing blue plaid cloth on the door, dash, and seats I had ever seen. This is what the ultimate 911 that you can drive anywhere looks like.

The build list reads like something out of a true Porsche enthusiast’s fantasy. Some aficionados may scoff at The Keen Project Safari, but that’s ridiculous. Porsche has a rich history running this generation 911 in the East African Safari and Dakar.

All The Keen Project Safaris get a light pod up front with two wide-beam lights and two pencil driving lights, bumper bars, shaved mirrors, which are nearly useless in real driving but boy they look cool, mud flaps, and ride on 215/65 R16 BFGoodrich KO2s.

The Keen Project Safari 911 No. 2

Inside each has the wiffle ball shifter and a Momo Prototipo steering wheel along with wild, retro upholstery that Keen and the owner choose together.

The suspension features long-travel shocks, upgraded torsion bars and modified upright that gives it the 4.0-inch lift from European ride height, a coilover setup, (911 Turbo) tie rods, racing camber plates and racing ball joints finished with poly bronze bushings slathered in waterproof grease (though this car, build No. 2, doesn’t have the these).

Keen didn’t create The Keen Project as a movement or a business; he simply wanted to make it so he could bomb around downtown Atlanta or blast through a national forest without worrying about his red 1981 Porsche 911 SC. From there, it snowballed as friends and others saw his Safari 911 and demanded he built them one.

The Keen Project Safari 911 No. 2

The entire thing costs about $100,000 (that includes the donor car), which is a lot of money, but Keen is quick to point out “in the Porsche world for a full build, it’s not a lot of money.”

He’s right. The average Singer build runs over $390,000, and while an RWB might cost $100,000, you’re more likely to spend $150,000 to $200,000 depending on the build.

Buy a Singer, RWB, or any off the shelf RS or GT3 from the Porsche showroom and you’ll enjoy taking it to the track, driving it around town, and hitting up the local cars and coffee.

For those that want more, need more or demand more, The Keen Project Safari 911 is a time machine that bombs around the woods, blasts through the mud, then rolls into cars and coffee and stops the crowd dead in their tracks.

Avant garde built 911 with safari coilover stage 4 suspension package.

Avant Garde Collection of Portland, Oregon serves up this 1983 Guards Red 911SC with Elephant Racing’s Stage 4 Safari Coilover Suspension Package . It’s setup to deliver serious fun in double duty – both on and off the road.

safari 911 build

Avant Garde built this car for double duty. A bit of split personality is evident here with serious off road underpinnings, paired with an interior that completes the on-off road dual use theme.

Let’s start with the off road. The core of any Safari build is the suspension and to handle rugged off-road duty Avant Garde selected the Elephant Racing Safari Coilover Stage 4 kit. The Stage 4 kit uses a full coilover setup that reliably provides the raised height and long suspension travel needed to soak up terrain.

The BFG 215/65/16 series all terrain tires have serious tread for traction in loose dirt, or as demonstrated here – sand. Their tall height provides increased ground clearance for getting over obstacles. The tires also deliver an aggressive off-road appearance that suits this car right.

The car is raised about three inches total. That includes two inches from the Stage 4 suspension, and another inch from the tires. The added suspension height helps clear the tall tires. A bit of custom work was also done to the front valence to provide additional room for steering inputs.

When building a truly functional safari 911  there are a number of considerations that factor into the suspension . A safari build really is a series of subsystems all designed to work in concert together. Any one change has a domino effect on the rest. From ensuring appropriate suspension travel and geometry to reinforcing critical suspension and chassis mounting points we have taken the guesswork out of what is ultimately a complicated engineering challenge.

Elephant Racing has a good summary of issues to consider when building a Safari car and selecting the suspension here…

safari 911 build

In fact, when building a truly functional safari 911 there are a number of considerations that factor in. As opposed to other upgrades that can be done on a piecemeal basis, a safari build really is a series of subsystems all designed to work in concert together. Any one change has a domino effect on the rest. From ensuring appropriate suspension travel and geometry to reinforcing critical suspension and chassis mounting points we have taken the guesswork out of what is ultimately a complicated engineering challenge.  Details on the full package can be found here…

safari 911 build

This build features renewed front suspension, front and rear Safari coilover assemblies built around our very own Von Shocks both front and rear, racing bump steer kit, de-cambered ball joints, a host of bushing upgrades throughout, and many more suspension upgrades.

The Stage 4 kit consolidates all the needed suspension items into one balanced package that eliminates the hard work and potential pitfalls of trying to spec out all the individual piece parts. This package is thoughtfully engineered and proven by Elephant Racing.

Extra protection is provided in the form an underbody skid plate, and the bumper over-rider safari bars. Aesthetically, the over-rider safari bars give a great aggressive look while functionally providing added protection against brush, tree limbs and other obstacles. The fact that it also provides some additional chassis stiffness is also a welcome bonus.

The skid plate starts at the front bumper and reaches back to the suspension mounting points, including spanning under the fuel tank. Made of aluminum sheet for light weight, and further strengthened with reinforcement for extra protection – it’s not only protective, but also helps the car when sliding over rocks or other obstacles, by preventing them from catching on the under carriage components.

Even with the all terrain tires, it’s possible to get stuck off road. No worries, Avant Garde has equipped the car with a winch. It’s cleverly mounted in the front trunk area, with only the hook exposed outside the bumper.

We did mention the split personality.

As much effort as went into crafting the car’s rugged off-road capability, nearly as much attention has been paid to the interior. The car is comfortable and well appointed, suitable for road going fun.

You can’t miss the trippy distorted checker board inserts on the seats, doors and dash knee pad. Definitely attention getting, the look is retro reminiscent of the some of the cars Porsche built in the ’70s and early ’80s. Called the ‘Pasha’ interior it was available on 911, 928 and 944 models.

In contrast to the retro Pasha upholstery, the Alcantara (synthetic suede) covering the dash is a nod to the modern cars and has the functional benefit of reducing windshield glare. The black and white coloring let’s these generations play together.

Finally we have the seats. Tall side bolsters keep you in place for faster road work. They are adjustable for comfort on longer trips.

Matt Farah's Safari 911: Everything You Need To Know

From writing for small auto news sites to becoming a prominent figure in the enthusiast cosmos, here's Matt Farah building his own Safari 911.

15The guys and gals who were once writing for small online auto news sites, in the beginning, are now among the very best journalists in the world. This was the process in which a man named Matt Farah came to be prominent in the enthusiast cosmos.

Farah first got traction with a group known as Garage419 , mostly a YouTube channel with press car content and challenges regarding enthusiast cars. After several years of work at 419 he would eventually start his own entity, known as The Smoking Tire.

Doing reviews of his fan's cars and press cars, along with track days and fun trips, he earned himself a spot at nearly every big performance press launch. Considering his love for cars, he has recently launched his newest gig, West Collector Car Storage .

It will be a state of the art facility that accommodates all types of customers who need a place to store their special cars in the LA area. It will include some of the best car stacking machinery in the state and have accommodations for other activities as well.

Luckily for him, he will now have room to store one of his own special builds, the Porsche 911 Safari.

Inspiration

Starting out as a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera with the 5-speed G50 gearbox and the 3.2 Liter flat 6, this car was clean. 90,000 miles and redone everything made Matt Farah's Porsche dreams come true, especially for what had in store.

What is most eye-catching about his beautiful G-series car, is the color. Cassis Red paint lies atop the sheet metal on the little car, which helped him get a better deal considering the color's unpopularity in the Porsche community. From the picture above, you can see that it is more of a pastel-like purple with sparkly undertones that gleam in the sun. Farah likes to call it "grape soda lipstick", a description so good that I wish I thought of it first.

His entire inspiration for buying the 911 came from a trip he had with world-renowned journalist, Chris Harris. Harris introduced Matt to his buddy who goes by the name of Leh Keen. Keen buys G series 911s, works his safari magic, and creates some of the best off=road race-style Porsches in the world. And after a ride-along in one of Keen's low tier builds, Matt decided he needed one immediately.

The safari build in its entirety  includes the existing Fuchs Wheels with BFG All-Terrain tires, a 4-inch lift with the Elephant Racing bypass shocks, redone front suspension, rally light pod, ducktail spoiler, and ski rack. Matt had the car built as a daily driver for LA, so he opted for a much needed A/C unit, Bluetooth stereo, and comfortable seats.

As for the oily stuff, the engine sits at 3.2 liters and is connected to the famous G50 Porsche gearbox. Farah had BBI Autosport do a complete engine rebuild including, of course, the internals, full header-back exhaust, heat exchangers, a Danske muffler, lightened flywheel/clutch, and a bunch of other detail-oriented changes. These mods will make any older 911 feel smoother, lighter, and tactile in its controls, which is an amazing feat considering these cars feel so good already.

And finally... the glorious interior. Matt's taste in cars is according to us, fantastic, and his interior scheme for the safari car only solidifies his keen eye for style. '90s transit-bus cloth covers the interior as not the secondary trim, but the primary interior color! Calling it a bold statement would be the bold understatement of the century.

A lot of people would have you believe that all Porsches are sacred, holy pieces of history that cannot be touched unless by the hand of Porsche themselves. The truth is, these people have invested their energy into an ideal that only proves them wrong in the end.

Enthusiast culture is about enjoying cars for what they are designed to do, and when it comes to Porsche, finding a better driving car is difficult. So, the notion that keeping one in your garage forever makes you an enthusiast, is slightly contradictory.

Matt Farah underwent scrutiny for modifying his own example into something he loved, which is wrong. To most people's surprise, 911s are some of the greatest loose-surface cars ever made. The weight over the rear tires, light steering, and impeccable control, is why Porsche won rally and why people like Leh Keen and Matt Farah preach the word of the Safari 911.

Surviving a Safari | The latest craze in air-cooled 911 builds

11th Aug 2018

Fabspeed Motorsport has always been at the forefront of industry trends since we started over 20 years ago, and that is no different when it comes to the builds we are a part of.

Recently, Off-Road "Safari" 911s have been growing increasingly popular and some amazing builds have utilized Fabspeed products for our proven performance and durability. When putting your car through the rigors of off-roading, you want to make sure the exhaust is up to the task as well. This is just one of the many reasons the best of the best at creating these Off-Road 911 Safari Builds come to Fabspeed, the official exhaust manufacturer for Safari Builds.

Earlier this year, the most famous Safari Build 911 and winner of SEMA’s “Best Off-Road Vehicle," Kelly-Moss Road and Race's VICCI Safari 4, sold for $204k furthering the growing popularity of these air-cooled beasts.

safari 911 build

What makes Kelly-Moss's VICCI Safari 4 the Best Off-Road Vehicle? Let’s take a look.

As you might have guessed by its name, the VICCI Safari 4 is not the first Safari Build by Kelly-Moss Road and Race, and we can safely say that practice makes perfect. They clearly have learned from previous projects and put together an amazing design, resulting in the best Safari 911 to date.

VICCI Safari 4 uses a Porsche 964 as its base with all-wheel drive, powered by a 3.8-liter supercharged Porsche flat-six, which is designed to always be on-boost, resulting in a potent 435 HP and 400 ft/bs. of TQ. That's almost double of power of the original 964 3.6L!

safari 911 build

Since the hearty 3.8 is being force-fed, Kelly Moss needed a high flow exhaust system. As set of  Fabspeed Porsche 964 Carrera RSR Headers with Heat , from our  RSR Header Muffler Kit , optimized airflow and had the durability needed for their performance vision. This loud and aggressive system is fabricated from 14-16 gauge T304L stainless steel, making it perfectly capable of withstanding the rigors of off-roading. Glowing gold from use, you can see that our headers look to be holding up wonderfully and ready to handle whatever might be thrown their way.

safari 911 build

The aesthetics of this build are just as impressive as what’s underneath. Kelly-Moss managed to blend the clean, classic look of Porsche with the rugged styling off an off-road vehicle.

There are subtle carbon fiber accents all over the vehicle, including the entire casing for the front flood lights providing a nice refined look yet with classic rally styling. The paint job itself is subtle as well, adding more of the classic off-road/safari look while still maintaining the clean, sophisticated style that has become synonymous with Porsche.

safari 911 build

We love being a part of amazing builds like this. Seeing the creativity and mechanical-prowess of other leaders in the community is incredibly inspiring and part of what drives us to constantly push ourselves as individuals and as a company.

If you are thinking about creating a Safari Build/Off-Road 911, make sure you use products that are durable enough to survive the adventures you plan to take the car on. Fabspeed uses the highest-quality materials, machinery, and labor to ensure that our products are the highest quality as well.

Porsche 911 Safari RS

Here we have an interesting build, the first Safari Style 911 built by Kelly-Moss almost a decade ago. This project started as a “Rat Rod” off road car and slowly snowballed into one of the most unique KMR builds that paved the way into future Safari 911 growth.

This car started as an old, beat up raced and used 911 that needed everything except a chassis. When first placed in front of the body shop crew, we knew exactly what it needed: fixtures. Celette Factory Porsche Fixtures, that is. The car was very used and needed a full body alignment before we could even start to modify anything. We cut out the “stock car”-style door bars from the roll cage, put it on the frame bench, and started pulling and hammering.

Once the body was back into spec, the KMR staff started patching the years of holes drilled and cut into various parts of the chassis and firewalls. In the beginning everything was minimal, keep the repairs simple and only as needed.  As the project progressed, it became evident that this was going to have to be the best it could be, based on the type of attention the car was already getting just being in pieces at the shop.

The interior that was prepped for rugged use with a texture and semigloss black got an RS style carpet kit. The Beard seats and custom carbon dash accent the upper switch panel and aluminum toe/floor boards. Once it came to the body exterior, the only two composite panels used are the engine lid/duck tail and the hood. The doors, bumpers, fenders are all metal.

After all the fitting to have great gaps and lines, the expert staff started fabricating the roof rack and front push bumper. Tying both the roof rack and front push bumper into the roll cage, we created an almost tube frame effect to the entire car making it extremely ridged. We finished the exterior off with a custom Sikkens LV650 topcoat and all of the trim/bumpers with LV650 Semi-Gloss Black. We then added the amenities, big lights, off road winch, spare tire mount, and removable bike rack mounts. This build was being planned out every step of the way to not only look the part, but to be an effective off road vehicle. After all, that’s what the client wanted.

At the end of the build, the Safari RS was born. Since its debut, the car has been featured in S3 Magazine as well as many online articles. A project like this seems to never be finished with upgrades being implemented as issues arise and new ideas are born during its aggressive summer and winter use; that’s right, winter use. We have revisited the ride height by adding lift, bigger tires, custom KMR control arms, and custom KMR inner tie rods to match.  KMR has modified the steel front fenders to accommodate the bigger tires through their entire range of motion on the newly modified suspension. This car is built to perform and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Roundup: All the Enthusiast-Built Safari Creations That Will Inspire You to Hit the Backroads

Roundup: Enthusiast-built safari cars that will inspire you to hit the dirt roads

Written by Daniel Lackey

The recipe is fairly simple: take an orthodox car, add unorthodox ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and hit the dirt.

Inspired by the East African Safari, and in particular, the Martini liveried Porsche 911s that took part in 1978, the popularity of the ‘Safari Build’ continues to climb to heady new heights. While specialists like Leh Keen and Richard Tuthill craft best-in-class offroad Porsche platforms ranging from FIA legal rally cars to the creative and conceptual, the craze has been seeing enthusiast-built projects surface left and right.

Although the Porsche 911 is the most prominent platform, the off-road road car concept can be applied to just about anything. With a splash of Group B and a pinch of Baja 1000, there are a few people who have diverged from the traditional path to create some truly unique vehicles. Perhaps the genre's newfound popularity is due in part to our eagerness to get out of our homes and into the wild following the pandemic restrictions, or, perhaps we feel the need to flee the heavy traffic of our crowded city streets. Either way, it looks like the Safari build is here to stay.

We scanned the interwebs and Instagram to find some of our favorite builds which you can browse and follow below:

Alfa Romeo GTV: Dropped Alfa

safari 911 build

The car: Dropped Alfa | The photographer: Jeff Stockwell

Moving a little off-piste, I’d like to introduce you to the ‘Dropped Alfa’, a 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV aptly named after it fell off the back of a truck while in transport. Prior to being ‘dropped’ this Alfa Romeo was built for carving the canyons outside LA. After the drop, it remained badly beaten until brothers Iliya and Nikita Bridan, of Oil Stain Lab , came up with a plan for its reincarnation.

The twins, who both work as designers, discussed many potential plans but settled on a Safari build, after all, they couldn’t damage it any further by taking it off-road. The Alfa lent itself surprisingly well to the conversion. Lifting the suspension proved to be straight forward and the body could accommodate large tires without modification. The tuned engine is better suited to blasting through the desert than climbing steep trails. The car was developed over time but proved so popular that it led them to construct a follow-up Safari build.

I Am Detailing's BMW E30 325ix

safari 911 build

The car and photo: Jakub Marek (I Am Detailing)

Expert car detailer Jakub Marek spends his days preparing some of the world's most special cars for premier concours displays. In his free time, he does the exact opposite. After owning over 20 BMW 3-series, he took this 325ix almost completely apart and built it into a off-road capable machine for the Gambler 500 in less than a week (yes you read that correctly). This included making a custom skid plate on front to protect oil cooler and oil pan for the upcoming event.

After servicing the engine and brakes and adding 27/8.5-14 tires, Jakub proceeded to drive the car from LA to Oregon just in time for said Gambler 500 event and the car performed flawlessly.

Alfa Romeo GTV6: Aether Alpine Alfa

safari 911 build

The car: Aether's Alpine Alfa GTV6 | The photographer: Shayan Bokaie

Following the success of Dropped Alfa, the Bridan brothers were commissioned by Aether Apparel to build another Safari car. Aether wanted something unique and discussed many potential platforms including a Porsche 968, but the decision was made upon the discovery of a low mileage Alfa Romeo GTV6. Work began immediately. Concept drawings were realized in 3D while they attended to the Alfas electrics and mechanicals.

The rear suspension of the GTV6 is a complex affair with de Dion tube, trailing arms, inboard disc brakes, and a 5-speed transaxle. A simple lift wasn’t going to be possible. The rear end was 3D scanned so components could be designed and manufactured to lift it properly while retaining the correct geometry. The results are simply exquisite, a properly engineered car that can handle off-road with an equally arresting aesthetic that complements Giugiaro’s original design.

The Safari 911 Is the Ultimate City Car

All the benefits of a pickup, none of the drawbacks.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Motor vehicle, Car, Asphalt, Mode of transport, Classic car, Automotive exterior, Automotive wheel system, Road surface,

The Ford Raptor has a problem: it’s monstrous. While it makes a lot of sense on the Baja Peninsula or bashing through snow outside of Park City, it makes no sense whatsoever in the city. For all of Los Angeles’s sprawl, it’s a city shockingly devoid of space. Designed around normal sized cars, not behemoth trucks, and with many garages and driveways designed 50, 60 years ago, LA isn’t ready for the Raptor.

I should know: I daily drove one for three years until I ditched it for being just too damn big. That’s not to say Ford hasn’t engineered some practicality into the thing; to the contrary, they absolutely have. In major cities—LA, New York, Boston, Philly, and DC specifically come to mind—the crumbling infrastructure has made a daily drive more like a jaunt down an off-road trail. Lazily applied patches of asphalt combined with potholes and wobbling expansion joints, no doubt thanks to fifty years of increasingly heavy cars, take their toll on your wheels, tires, suspension, and spine. Although parking a Raptor was even more of a pain in the ass than filling up the hot tub-sized tank with Premium every week, negotiating bad roads was always a pleasure.

Herein lies the dilemma: off-roading is typically the realm of trucks. Trucks do not have good dynamics. Trucks are big, ungainly things, meant for hauling large amounts of people and stuff. What do you do if you want the suspension of a baja truck to deal with the garbage roads of the city, but not the size or efficiency drawbacks? The answer, of course, is a rally car.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Automotive design, Motor vehicle, Rim, Sports car, Race car, Hatchback, Mid-size car,

Conventional wisdom says that if you raise a sports car four inches above its factory ride height and install knobby BF Goodrich KO2 tires, you will not exactly improve it. This is especially true if you listen to the opinions of commenters on Bring-A-Trailer. Leh Keen, the mind behind The Keen Project, disagrees.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Regularity rally, Coupé, Automotive design, Classic car, Sedan, Sports car, Porsche 911 classic,

Leh, a professional racing driver and lifelong Porsche enthusiast, has spent the last two years building the first fifteen examples of his Keen Project Safari 911. Back in 2016, I had the privilege of traveling to his weekend home in the remote mountains of North Carolina, to have a go in Safari #1. To call the experience transformative would be an understatement. On a closed, single-track road, a couple flaggers short of a proper rally stage, I learned a very valuable lesson: a car with great dynamics on the road will also have great dynamics on a loose surface, especially with the proper tires.

Although nervous, within 15 or 20 minutes I found myself doing huge slides in Leh’s personal car, a foot or two from very large, potentially very expensive pine trees. To my utter shock, the 911 turned in harder, rotated better, and oversteered smoother than, literally any rally car I’ve ever driven. Subaru STIs, even on the correct tires, were utter pigs by comparison. Furthermore, because of the loose surface, the “widowmaker snapback” one warns dentists about when driving old 911s at the limit is entirely absent.

On dirt, the Safari 911 made absolute sense; it was a pure rally car, except built entirely for fun and not for winning races. Even better was what happened when we got to tarmac: it was still a 911. That’s not to say it will be setting any lateral G-loading records, or even that it necessarily handles or steers as sharply as it did when it left the factory. It doesn't. However, the ride quality is superb, especially over uneven pavement, the eyeline is still that of a sports car, and you don’t really notice the extra height. Even if you did, looking out over those quad rally lights stuffed in between the pontoon fenders either makes you smile, or reveals you have no soul at all.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Regularity rally, Coupé, Classic car, Automotive design, Sedan, Rim, Automotive lighting,

Fundamentally, it still feels like a 911, even if mildly numbed down on the road. The beautiful greenhouse, driving position close to the windshield and dash, the perfect seating position, the sound and feel of the engine and way it pushes you, rather than pulls you down the road like only a 911 can, even the effortlessness of a cruise down the road in top gear; all of this is still present here, despite the off-road modifications. Sure, it loses some of its track-worthiness, and I’m not sure it’s the perfect choice for a blast through the (paved) canyons, either. That's not why I bought it. I bought it to navigate the urban jungle on a daily basis, take on road trips, including skiing in the winter, and the occasional off-road jaunt. It’s nearly perfect.

To get to this point, Mr. Keen combines his creative ideology and sense of setup with a handful of extremely talented Atlanta-area subcontractors to do the physical work on the car. He can arrange a donor car, a “G-Body” 911 from 1979 to 1989, or you can provide your own. In my case, I had a specific need: the G50 transmission only offered from ’87-’89, as it has a much more direct shift feel than the 915 transmission used in earlier models. You also get an extra 200cc of displacement from the 3.2 “Carrera” engine over the earlier 911 SC models. My car, a 1987 two-owner Carrera with the optional Whale Tail, burgundy leather, air conditioning, and a sunroof, is a cleaner example than most start with. Most folks also get a full repaint, something my car, in a spectacularly '80s shade of Cassis Red, did not require.

Auto part, Vehicle, Car, Engine, Porsche, Subcompact car,

In order to make the 3.2-liter engine a bit more lively, I had the folks at BBi Autosport in Huntington Beach install a light flywheel and clutch assembly, SSI heat exchanger headers, a Dansk vintage-style muffler (All Keen Project Safari 911s use this), a Wevo Short Shift Kit, and a Wavetrac Limited-Slip Differential. They also went through the fuel and ignition system, flushed all the fluids, changed the filters, and updated many of the fittings and hoses.

From there, the car goes on a truck to Keen in Atlanta. First, Bryson Richards and his team at Classic Livery of Atlanta get down to bodywork. They install the signature rally light pod, painted to match, and rally-style front and rear bumpers. The bash bars and skid plates are functional, and give the car a menacing look in the rearview. Classic Livery also handles the interior, which for me, means Cobra GTS Classic bucket seats, RS lightweight door cards, and a Prototipo Wheel, all trimmed in burgundy leather, burgundy carpet, and City Bus fabric.

Leg, Automotive design, Human leg, Vehicle, Car, Muscle, Thigh, Car seat, Textile, Sitting,

Yes, actual city bus fabric. Some folks say they want a crazy interior, but what they really mean is tartan or houndstooth or something. I live for an aggressive interior. We kept the original dash and door uppers, as they were in mint condition, as well as the black leather headliner, equally mint. The rear seats are (optionally) deleted, and a vintage-style four-point roll bar is welded in. Since the car is meant for daily driving, Clarion hooked up one of their M508 single-DIN head units with USB charging and Bluetooth, some 6.5 inch coaxial speakers for the door cards, and 6x9 inch speakers for the rear decklid.

From Classic Livery the car goes to Goldcrest Motorsports, who handle the installation of the Elephant Racing Safari Suspension and do the final sorting of the whole package before it's delivered to the customer. Because Keen focuses on a period-style build wherever possible, the suspension is not a full coil-over conversion. Rather, it retains the torsion bar-style rear suspension, just with better, long-travel shocks, different swaybars, new ‘PolyBronze’ bushings, and of course, the BF Goodrich K02 tires (the same tires used on the Ford Raptor) mounted on (American-made) BRAID RSR-style 16-inch alloy wheels.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Regularity rally, Porsche 911 classic, Coupé, Sports car, Porsche 912, Automotive design, Porsche,

The idea is to find a balance between off-road performance and street drivability; remember this is meant to be a daily driver with off-road capabilities; it’s not a racecar or a trophy truck. And that’s not just for me—Leh uses his personal Safari for airport runs, six-hour round trip drives to his weekend house, and to go to the grocery store, then also to hit the trails in the woods when he wants to get a bit sideways, an area where the Safari 911 particularly excels.

If there are any downsides, they are minimal in comparison to having one of the coolest and most practical daily driver sports cars around: the tight ‘rally mirrors,’ a standard part of the Keen Project package may be great for sailing the car in between trees at 100 mph on a stage rally, but they make parallel parking a nightmare, even with the convex ‘bifocals’ attached to them. And because of the lightened flywheel and aftermarket Steve Wong chip, the car doesn’t particularly like to idle when ice cold. Without the inertia of the stock flywheel keeping things rotating, it will die if you simply press the clutch in while driving, rather than gently returning to idle. The only real solution for this is to warm the car up for five minutes or so before the first drive of the day.

Vehicle, Regularity rally, Car, Steering wheel, Steering part, Driving, Personal luxury car, Sunglasses,

I absolutely love driving my Safari 911. Although I have yet to do any real off-roading (Leh recommended a few hundred street miles, then a thorough once-over to make sure everything is nice and tight after installation, before doing any real abusive driving), this is the most fun petrol-powered city car I’ve ever driven. Like a Raptor, speed bumps are best taken at full throttle; the car skips over them like a stone. Potholes need not be avoided, and dips in the road become jump opportunities. There’s some additional body roll along with the extra travel, but the handling remains predictable and the manual steering, direct. With the reduced rear grip of the off-road tires, it’s even possible to get predictable, mild oversteer at fairly low speeds, on tarmac. I’ve parked it up on curbs, driven it over downed trees in the road, and taken driveways straight on that would require gnashed teeth and sweaty palms in a stock height 911. And the whole time, I’ve never for a second felt like I wasn’t piloting a performance-oriented 911. It’s got the sound, the response, the look and feel you want from a Porsche, just pointed in a different direction and cranked up to 13. I even watched as the valets shifted a Bentley GT a few feet over, so I could have front row parking at Mastro’s.

This, not the Nurburgring-tuned Ford Focus RS, is the urban rally car experience I’ve really been looking for. While the rest of the world gravitates toward SUV’s, trucks, and luxo-crossovers to deal with modern urban and suburban driving conditions, the pervasive attitude is that cars are dead, and if you can’t beat ‘em, to just join ‘em, with something like a Macan Turbo, as much of a luxury rally car as you can buy today. Well I think you can beat them, have your air-cooled cake and eat it too. Universality, thy name is Keen Project Safari, and it’s the perfect go-anywhere, do anything sports car for today’s urban jungle. It’s the best of air-cooled, the best of Raptor, and the best sense of humor, in one vintage 911-sized package.

This Rally-Ready 996 Porsche 911 Is a Safari Build Done Right

For less than a third of the price of a 911 Dakar, Denmark-based Kalmar Automotive will build you an off-road ready 996.

Porsche News photo

It’s fair to say the 996 Porsche 911 is having a bit of a moment right now. From official Porsche Classic one-offs to Instagram accounts reclaiming the fried-egg moniker, people are coming around to Porsche’s late-’90s and early aughts 911 due to its blend of relative affordability , an analog driving experience, and modern creature comforts. Now, companies are building turn-key Safari kits for 996s, boosting ride height and capability while retaining the 911’s signature rear weight bias and sports-car dynamics.

Kalmar Automotive recently introduced the 996-based RS-6 as the first water-cooled model in its “Adventure Range.” The Denmark-based company is no stranger to off-road Porsche conversions, having built 964- and 993-based cars in the past. According to its website, Kalmar can also outfit your first-generation Cayman or second-gen Cayenne for rally duty.

<em>Kalmar Automotive.</em>

Starting with a customer-supplied 996 in rear- or all-wheel drive, Kalmar increases ground clearance by over three inches to a total of 8.25, equaling that of a Cayenne and outdoing Porsche’s own 911 Dakar by three-quarters of an inch even in its full-height mode. Adaptive, electronically-controlled shock absorbers are also available, as is a hydraulic lift that raises ground clearance by nearly another two inches.

But this isn’t just a lift kit. Kalmar also fits a custom limited-slip differential and upgraded driveshafts for putting the power to the wheels and a stiffer strut brace to better manage lateral and vertical loads, along with special top mounts and bushings designed to cope with the stresses of off-roading. Lightweight, narrow wheels are paired with taller all-terrain or spiked winter tires, and Kalmar claims “complete underbody protection” with additional shielding for critical front-mounted cooling systems. Customers interested in off-the-grid travel can also opt for a rear-mounted rack with fuel cans and a spare tire.

Inside, Kalmar adds a rear roll cage and Recaro buckets for safety, but otherwise focuses on weight reduction with the removal of “all sound deadening materials, audio and other comfort items.” Guess you’ll be listening to gravel pelting the wheel wells and the flat-six engine—I’ve heard worse.

Porsche News photo

The company claims it chose the 996 platform because of access to “plentiful and more affordable donor cars,” which is another way of saying air-cooled prices are too damn high . In addition to providing their car, buyers will fork over at least €45,000 ($49,000) and expect to wait around six months while their car is built. That’s not cheap, but it’s a far cry from the 911 Dakar’s $223,650 base price tag before dealer markups.

Now, Kalmar isn’t the first outfit to Safari a 996—that’s the SafariProjek guys out of South Africa. The ambitious Captain Crankshaft duo also built their own on a budget this summer and documented the adventure on YouTube, which is worth a watch. But there’s something about this early narrowbody car with the runny-yolk lights in a rally livery that just works. It almost looks like it was meant to be.

Video thumbnail

I won’t be cutting up my own early 996 anytime soon, mostly because I’m indecisive and don’t have $50,000 to spare. But I like the idea of the platform being used as an accessible entry point for all kinds of wild builds. Let’s keep it weird, 996 fans.

Porsche 911 Vision Safari

Year: 2012      Devolopment stage: Drivable prototype

“We believe that there is hardly any other car brand that can combine sports car and off-road characteristics as credibly as Porsche,” says Chief Designer Michael Mauer. In the 1970s, the Porsche 911 had already proved its astonishing off-road capabilities in the legendary East African Safari Rally. The race took competitors on a journey covering almost 5,000 km across the Kenyan wilderness. In 1978, Porsche works drivers Björn Waldegård and Vic Preston Jr. were right up in the leading group in their Porsche 911 SC Safari, which boasted increased ground clearance, all-round reinforcement and some pretty characteristic Martini stripes. They proved that the air-cooled 911 is almost as unstoppable in the desert as it is on a motorway or a race track. The images of these Porsche 911 Safari cars covered in the red dust of the African savannah, splashing through water holes and mud pools will never be forgotten.

And that is why the Porsche design team decided to pay tribute to the legendary off-road sports car with a contemporary re-interpretation in 2012. The Porsche 911 Vision Safari was created on the basis of the 991 generation of the 911. With its raised suspension, reinforced wheel housings, massive bumpers and a spartan rally cockpit with race seats and roll cage, it fully reflects its historic rally predecessor. The designers even planned a special shelf mounted above a fan behind the seats – to cool down your crash helmet between especially hot stages.

The Porsche 911 Vision Safari completed its maiden drive “Out of Africa” on the gravel track at the Weissach test facility, where normally the Porsche Cayenne and Macan prove their off-road capability. Chief Designer Michael Mauer was the co-driver in the Safari 911, with its uniquely soft suspension setup, when it performed its first drift and remembers enthusiastically: “I have rarely had so much fun before!”

  1. Porsche Safari Kits: For Porsche 911, 930, & 912

Safari cars are great fun just driving down the street. But a whole new dimension happens off road. Rugged terrain loads the suspension and chassis in ways that street cars never see. Robust as is, the 911 chassis has known vulnerabilities. Any serious safari build should address these proactively, before they fail.

  2. Our 7 Favorite Safari 911 Builds

Porsche's 911 was practically brand new in 1965, and it was already in the Monte Carlo rally claiming top 5 finishes. Though not a "Safari" build, it was made for off-road racing, and to us has all the qualifications to be included in this group. After all, if modern 911s are doing the Safari thing well, the predecessors were just as good.
