Go On A Wild Safari Adventure At Atlanta’s Fully Immersive Attraction “Illuminarium”

Perhaps you’ve spent time on the Atlanta BeltLine’s East Side Trail — it’s a lovely and transporting space in the heart of the city, but unlikely to contain any inter-dimensional portals. That is, until July 2021, when the new fully immersive experience-based attraction Illuminarium is set to open on the BeltLine off of Ralph McGill Boulevard. At its first exhibit, “ WILD: Safari Experience , ” visitors will explore a virtual African landscape that activates all the senses, even smell. The attraction’s interactive environments respond to visitors’ movements using an array of cutting-edge technologies. Illuminarium CEO Alan Greenberg and Executive Vice President of Technology and Content Brian Allen joined “City Lights” Senior Producer Kim Drobes to describe the new attraction and how it was created.

Interview highlights:

Why immersive, and why the BeltLine?

“I think it’s no secret that there are some amazing experiences that have opened all over the world,” Greenberg said. “Things like Team Lab in Tokyo, and Atelier des Lumières in Paris, and Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. And we saw these trends, in what some people call the experience economy, and thought we could do something really special.”

“We saw the location on the BeltLine and it just felt perfect,” Greenberg said. “We just loved the energy — you know, when you’re on the BeltLine you’re kind of on an adventure, and we just loved that vibe. So, when we saw it, we went, ‘We’re going to put the world’s first Illuminarium here. We were actually looking in New York City for a long time to find the right spot, but when we saw this one, we said, ‘Let’s start here.’”

What is Illuminarium?

“What I like to say is, we have created, and are creating, a new media format,” Allen said. “We have a very large and beautiful canvas for audio, video, interaction, a true multisensory experience. And the advent of multiple technologies, including native 4k laser projection, audio tech capabilities, interactive capabilities powered by lidar, scent capabilities, allowed me and the team to really layer technologies together, to be more of a supporting character for the content that gets displayed.”

“When you walk into an Illuminarium, when you come to our Safari experience, you’re going to see it like reality, you’re going to hear it in an extraordinary way, you’re going to feel it, because of the haptic systems in our floor that give you … a rumble effect in your body, you’re going to smell it through our sense systems, and you’re actually going to affect it, through the lidar interactive system,” Greenberg said. “So when you’re walking down a dirt path, on our floors you’ll actually pick up dust as you walk … when you walk on the surface of the moon, you’ll actually leave footprints.”

Like virtual reality, but communal:

“Illuminarium is, in many ways, VR without the glasses, or without the headset,” Greenberg said. “And what that allows you to do, is to have a shared experience … to go to Africa with somebody, as you typically would, and to share those ‘wow’ moments, those head-turning moments of life.

“We think there’s never been a better time for people to come back together in a communal experience, which you just can’t do with VR.”

Illuminarium Brings Immersive Safari Experience To Atlanta

If you’ve ever wanted to know what lions, tigers and wildebeests sound like on the Atlanta Beltline, now’s your chance. The Illuminarium is one of the hottest tickets in town.

Wild animals on Atlanta’s hottest development project may be far fetched to some, but with the Illuminarium, it’s going down this summer.

In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about Illuminarium in Atlanta.

What Is Illuminarium’s WILD: A Safari Experience?

Hold onto your seats! WILD is an immersive experience that transports visitors into an African landscape. 

The way the experience works is that you enjoy cinematic content shot by Radical Media using custom camera arrays that provide a 240-degree native field of view.

To aid the experience, visitors hear the exotic sounds and smell and natural scents of Africa, all without leaving the Beltline.

When Is Illuminarium’s WILD: A Safari Experience Taking Place?

Illuminarium is currently going on in Atlanta just off Sumerset Trace along the Beltline. The event is brought to you by Illuminarium Experiences, a new global experiential entertainment company.

 Tickets for WILD: A Safari Experience have gone on sale at Illuminarium.com. This first-of-its-kind entertainment experience will put the beauty and splendor of Africa’s most exotic animals on full display.

Attendees can expect to see some of Earth’s most majestic creatures in their natural habitats.

The world’s first Illuminarium — featuring a new kind of immersive experience —  opened in Atlanta on July 1, 2021. The first exhibit there is WILD: A Safari Experience , and tickets are on sale now (see ticket info below).

Ground-breaking technology will allow you to step off the BeltLine Eastside Trail and on to the African continent. You’ll come face-to-face with some of the world’s most exotic animals — brought to life through laser projections on a 360-degree canvas that surrounds you and places you at the watering holes, the grassland, and the forest.

 Unlike virtual reality, you don’t need a headset or special glasses. In that way, it’s a shared experience.

The exhibit is designed to involve all of your senses, through 3-D surround sound and in-floor haptics that let you feel the thud of an elephant’s footsteps. Even scent is piped in, to give you a strong sense of place.

We’ve seen these experiential exhibits quickly become a trend, as the pandemic made travel more problematic. So, while Illuminarium tickets are not particularly cheap by our usual standards here (they start at $30/child and $35/adult), they are far less expensive than an actual safari.

Because there has never been an Illuminarium before, the images and video you see here are all artistic renderings that were supplied in press materials. We’re invited to a media preview this week, and will update with actual photos as soon as we can!

About Illuminarium

It’s exciting that Illuminarium has chosen Atlanta as the spot for its very first venue! The creators said in a media interview that they fell in love with the energy of the Atlanta BeltLine, after having a hard time finding a suitable spot in New York City.

Illuminarium has plans to open locations in Las Vegas in January and in Miami in the fall of 2022. Other future sites are being considered in New York, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles, and Austin.

Visual effects, gentle floor vibration, immersive sound, and laser projection are all part of the experience — but nothing is designed to be purposely frightening.

There is also an Illuminarium After Dark experience, as well as a café and shop onsite. Details are below.

No closing date has been set for WILD. However, Illuminarium plans to premiere its next exhibit, SPACEWALK, some time in 2022.

According to the press release , Illuminarium will design and operate each spectacle in an environmentally conscious manner that acknowledges its social influence.

Note that there are extended hours during the first three weeks Illuminarium is open. The venue will open later in the morning once school resumes in August.

Daytime safari attraction

♦ From July 1 – 21 Monday thru Wednesday — 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday thru Saturday — 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

♦ From July 22 – August 8 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day

♦ August 9 and onward 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day

Illuminarium After Dark

Thursday through Saturday, plus Sunday July 4th: 8 p.m. to midnight

Illuminarium Café

9 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, serving breakfast, dinner, lunch, and snacks. Reservations encouraged. The Cafe is open to the public — you don’t need a paid admission to eat here.

Illuminarium Tickets & Pricing

You can buy tickets on the Illuminarium website or through Groupon (see below).

Each ticket is for a set date and entry time, to control capacity — so you’ll want to choose your arrival time carefully and plan to be on time (which means plenty of time to find parking, if you’re coming by car).

Advance purchase is strongly encouraged right now. Walk-ups can purchase tickets if any space is available for the next entry time.

Tickets for the standard experience are: * Adults — $35 * Children 3-12 — $30 * Seniors (65+) — $32.50 NOTE that taxes and fees add about $4.50 to each ticket Buy tickets online

The TravelZoo deal

Through September 20th, you can save on Illuminarium tickets via TravelZoo.

The deal includes the standard experience ticket as follows:

• $26.75 (reg. $35) … Adult (Ages 13 and up)
• $22.75 (reg. $30) … Youth (Ages 6 to 12) 
• $24.75 (reg. $32.50) … Senior (Ages 65 and up) 

Note that taxes and fees are added at checkout — and in our test run, these added about $7 to a ticket. Depending on how many children and how many adults are in your party, you may save more through the Groupon deal below, because Groupon does not add tax or fees. 

Buy the TravelZoo deal To get the deal, you’ll be asked to become a TravelZoo member, which is free, but you’ll need to manage the emails you want to receive.

Buy tickets through Groupon

You can buy Illuminarium tickets through Groupon — although it’s not exactly offering a discount on the actual ticket price. HOWEVER, you can save up to $6 per adult ticket because Groupon does not add sales tax or any fees to its prices.

Note that Groupon is not offering a lower price for kids age 3 to 12. So, for comparison, a child’s ticket thru Illuminarium comes to $34.30 with tax and fees, while you’d pay $35 even thru Groupon. Still, you can come out ahead buying thru Groupon if there are more adults in your party than kids.

Groupon prices are as follows: * Standard experience — $35 (no added fees) * Combo experience — $40 (no added fees) * All-inclusive experience — $50 (no added fees)

When you buy through Groupon, you’ll still pick a date and arrival time, listed in 15-minute increments.

NOTE: You can get up to 8% cashback from Rakuten (formerly Ebates) if you sign up and start a shopping session before you purchase your Groupon. You get the money at the end of each quarter and can have it sent to you via check or PayPal.

During these special evening events, Illuminarium will transform into a dynamic bar with an immersive environment. Through projection and audio, you”ll find yourself in fantastic and far-flung settings. 

The café offers both indoor seating and an outdoor patio facing the BeltLine. During WILD, it will offer authentic dishes, beer, and wine from the African continent, along with Southern fare.

Visitors can also experience The Illuminarium Café, offering both indoor seating and an outdoor patio facing the BeltLine. The café will be an extension of the immersive experience content, serving authentic dishes, beer, and wine from the African continent, along with local southern favorites.

Illuminarium Shop

Buy souvenirs of your experience, plus arts and crafts objects sourced directly from Africa. 

According to the press release, the shop will carry unique items such as woven baskets, beaded jewelry, and hand-carved wooden decor sourced from artisan networks in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.

The shop is open to the public and does not require a paid admission.

Signature wine festival returns to Zoo Atlanta for the first time since 2019

Atlanta’s wildest wine cellar comes uncorked with the much-anticipated return of Zoo Atlanta’s Sippin’ Safari, set for Saturday, September 17, 2022. The popular signature event, which will take place from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., will feature sampling of over 50 selections of wine varietals and blends from leading winemaking regions. A limited selection of beers and hard seltzers will also be available.

Live music, after-hours wildlife viewing until dusk, Keeper Talks, and free rides on the Endangered Species Carousel and Zoo Train will enhance the one-of-a-kind experience for ages 21 and up. Food will be available for an additional purchase.

The price of General Admission includes the drive-thru and walkabout experiences. For your convenience, you may purchase park tickets and passes to our Pine Mountain, GA, location in two ways. Wild Animal Safari™ makes learning a fun experience. Our group adventures are a great option for school groups, organizations, and business teams to spend quality time together. The tour packages we have for group outings in Pine Mountain, GA, also have discounts available. Our group outings are designed to accommodate larger groups. Please understand that if you wish your party to take advantage of the group rate, a minimum of 20 participants must be booked in advance. Please call our ticketing office during business hours at least two weeks in advance of your visit. Advance booking allows us to prepare the tour package to meet your needs.

Future & Metro Boomin will make a stop in Philadelphia for "We Trust You Tour" this August

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- "If young Metro don't trust you..." After the surprise release of "WE STILL DON'T TRUST YOU" last Friday, Future and Metro Boomin are bringing the vibes to Philadelphia for the "We Trust You Tour" on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Wells Fargo Center.

In the center of rap controversy with an alleged beef with Drake, the dynamic duo's tour will start on July 30 in Kansas City, Missouri, and end on Sept. 9 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Future and friends made a stop in Philly last February for the "One Big Party" tour.

General on-sale tickets will be available starting Friday, April 19 at 10 a.m. There is a Cash App presale ahead of the general sale on Wednesday, April 17 through Thursday, April 18 starting at 10 a.m. Those with the Cash App Card will get a 20% instant discount on tour merch, according to the release.

There are various VIP packages for the tour. Some of the packages include premium tickets, a photo op in front of the stage, access to the VIP Lounge, a specially designed VIP gift item and more.

Grammy-award-winning rapper Future has dozens of multi-platinum certifications under his belt and reached rarified air as one of only a handful of rappers to achieve Diamond status, according to the release. The Atlanta native also has made history as "the first artist to release two Billboard Top 200 number ones in consecutive weeks." He won his first Grammy for "Best Rap Performance" for "King's Dead" with Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and James Blake.

The man with a distinctive sound, St. Louis native and Grammy award-winning producer, Metro Boomin, carries the title of "Highest-Streaming Producer," according to the release. Diamond-certified with many hits under his belt such as "Bad and Boujee" by Migos, "Congratulations" by Post Malone, "Mask Off" by Future and plenty more, Metro Boomin had three No. 1 debuts on the Billboard 200 with his solo debut album "Not All Heroes Wear Capes." He is also the brains behind the official soundtrack for "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse."
