For Mental-Visual Learners

This is probably the only app that is critical in my life. It might sound counterintuitive for me to say that the app that lets you listen to text is for visual learners but hear (lol) me out. Research (google it) has shown that whether we are looking at images through our eyes or seeing/conjuring images in our mind's "eyes", the visual cortex becomes active. Let me rephrase, regardless of whether you're seeing things in reality, say pictures or text on a book or visualizing what you did yesterday, the same part of the gain is being used to process those "images." The way I comprehend and learn from information is by constantly forming mental images of the concepts and linking and rearranging them into a graph model in my head--this becomes slow/more difficult when I have to (using the same visual cortex) basically multi-task/process text I'm reading on a page and synthesize corresponding mental images; the same part of my brain is doing the processing for two different tasks, so my reading speed and the quality and speed of the synthesized information in my head suffer. This is where speechify comes in. Speechify lets me engage my auditory cortex, which is otherwise unused in learning (from reading), for consuming and processing the information (text) and allows me to fully engage my visual cortex for comprehension and learning. I hope this makes sense, and I'd love if people could share any supporting or conflicting research.

I am SO grateful there is FINALLY a app that is capable of reading out loud for me! With ADHD, Anxiety, and learning disabilities I struggle with just getting though a page, and I love to collect books and as much information as possible with ALL the good intentions possible to read and grow! I beat myself up for buy all the things I do (reading wise) bc I struggle with getting that time and focus long enough to read. Being a single momma of three kids ages 12,6,&5 and a fur mama of a cat and dog, I am very busy. Being able to hear the information of topics I am super interested in is LIFE CHANGING! I love my audiobooks! But when wanting to read websites (just finally was able to listen/read about CBT for ADHD on a website by copy and pasting the url! Life changing!), college text books (haven’t tried this feature just yet but I plan to soon) and I am looking forward to being able to have my email read about my kids endless school stuff! I have been searching for YEARS now for something that could help me and hands down this is what I have needed! Thank you for creating this app. Also keeping this app’s add on features at a reasonable price! I will be doing the add on for the speed preference and I want to support someone who created something so user friendly and for those like me who want to grow and yet are stuck and struggle with all the personal stuff that keeps us from growing! Audible or Speechify?

I spent hours comparing text to speech apps, and by far, Speechify has some of the best premium HD voices. I even considered dropping Audible, so that I could pay for an unlimited amount of HD voice listening time; however, while the HD voices are great, they’re not reliable enough for me to consider them as a replacement for Audible just yet. At times, they’re slow to load or glitchy. I wasted a good 200 or so words listening to Gwyneth lisp her way through sentences as if she was lapsing into a different language. I fiddled with her speech rate trying to remedy the problem, but it was to no avail. I had to switch to Michael. Michael read through everything perfectly, but he too had trouble staying on task. Even though I had plenty of of HD listening words left, he would intermittently cut out and be replaced by the British Male speaking voice. With all things considered, this is an app worthy of downloading. It does a respectable job transferring words from pictures—better than most. Sometimes, to my astonishment, it can read my handwriting. It hasn’t crashed, and apart from the HD voices, the standard voices seem quite reliable. I like that I can earn HD words the more I listen, and that there’s enough to stay entertained with in the free version. With a bit more perfecting, Audible might find itself facing the boot in favor of this nifty little app. For now, Audible is safe from the chopping block.

Please reach out to us via your app messaging and we're happy to refill the lost HD words due to the Gwyneth voice issue.

How to make Safari read a website aloud to you

Here's a neat but hidden trick Safari can do: read a webpage aloud to you. This comes in handy for getting multiple things done at once, such as typing while catching up on a news article or having recipes read to you while you cook. Follow the steps below to get Safari to read to you on your MacBook or iPad .

Get Safari to read a webpage to you in OS X

1. Tap the Reader View icon in the browser bar.

This will make Safari show you only the main website content. Otherwise, Safari will attempt to read every word on the page, including navigation menus and other details you don't need to hear.

2. Go to Edit > Speech > Start Speaking.

Safari will immediately start reading the content on the webpage. Unfortunately, there's no pause or speed controls available directly in Safari. However, you can customize the voice and speaking rate in the System Preferences app. Go to System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Text to Speech to customize the voice you hear:

To stop the reading in Safari, go to Edit > Speech > Stop Speaking.

On the iPad or iPhone , you'll set up the text-to-speech option first in the Settings app.

2. Tap Accessibility under General.

3. Tap Speech.

4. Toggle Speak Screen on.

Alternatively (or additionally), you can show a speech button when you highlight text in Safari or other iOS apps, but for having entire webpages read to you, the two-finger swipe down is easier to use. Here you can also adjust the speaking rate and choose a different voice.

5. Tap the Reader view icon in Safari to switch the page to a simplified reading -- and listening -- format.

6. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to have Safari start reading aloud.

You'll be able to fast forward and rewind, pause, or change the reading speed from the mobile browser's onscreen controls.

Safari did have extensions before iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, but they were watered down compared to the extensions available on macOS. You could send a webpage to another app or open a new modal on top of the page in Safari, but more advanced integration was left out.

For example, with share and action extensions, you could open a page in a different browser, share it on social media, read it later in another app, translate it, find and select images to save, and so on. Content blocker extensions were the only ones that could directly impact a webpage's content in Safari.

The Safari extensions in iOS 15 and iOS 16 , as well as iPadOS 15 and iPadOS 16 , can do so much more, allowing you to better customize the way you use your browser. You could change the appearance or behavior of a webpage's content, add buttons directly to it, and more.

Viewing Safari Extensions on Your iPhone or iPad

To see what Safari extensions you already have on your iPhone or iPad, navigate to Settings –> Safari –> Extensions. Content blockers stick to the top, with web extensions right below them. Tap a web extension to read more about it, toggle it on or off, and change the "Ask," "Deny," and "Allow" privileges for some or all websites. (You can use and also manage extensions from Safari's page settings menu by tapping the "AA" icon in the URL bar.)

If you want to find more Safari extensions, tap "More Extensions" at the bottom of the "Extensions" menu in Safari's main settings. It will open up the extensions category in the App Store where you can browse and choose those that catch your interest. For those always looking for new ways to save money, earn cash back, and get coupons for your favorite stores, install Honey and let it do all the thinking. It works in the background, notifying you when a coupon code is available for the store you're shopping at in Safari, and all you have to do is activate the code.

Since October 2021 , Honey, which PayPal owns, has been offering cash back for select online shops in addition to coupons. Participating stores will offer a percentage back in Honey Gold, which you can redeem as cash to your PayPal account. You can also trade Gold points in for gift cards.

The idea behind the Acorns service is that anyone can make micro-investments. It was designed for beginner investors, so it's simple and easy to use. You can invest money into your portfolio any time you want. Plus, you can make the service round up any payments you make with linked accounts to the nearest dollar, either automatically or manually, using the spare change for small investments that pile up with frequent use.

However, the Safari extension focuses on Acorns Earn, which invests extra money into your portfolio earned from shopping at participating shops online. It's similar to getting cash back with Honey or Rakuten, but Acorns automatically invests it into your portfolio. You can search for stores directly from the extension, but it will also prompt you to activate Earn when shopping on a participating site.

To use Acorns in any capacity, you need a subscription : the personal plan is $3 per month, while the family option is $5 per month. Also, Acorns states that you need to enable " Allow Apps to Request to Track " in your iOS privacy settings, and then allow Acorns when prompted. The extension also does not work on iPadOS at the moment.

App 4: Create, Enter, and Manage Passwords

If you're a LastPass user, you'll be happy to know that the Safari extension for iOS and iPadOS works much like it does on macOS. When you open a website with a login or signup page, you'll see the red and white LastPass icon in the username and password fields. Tap one to use the extension.

When you tap the icon when signing up or logging in to an account not saved in LastPass already, you'll see a box appear up top. You can tap "More options" to report a problem, generate a password, or open your vault. You can also tap the plus (+) to expand the entry and select a folder, disable autofill, etc. And adding a new entry to your vault couldn't be easier.

You can also tap the LastPass extension from Safari's page settings menu to open your vault to search your accounts, generate a password, view lock settings, and more.

LastPass is totally free to use if it's just for your iPhone or iPad, but if you want to sync passwords across all your devices, you'll need to pay $3 per month or $4 per month for a family subscription.

App 5: Make Your iPhone or iPad Read Any Text

Speechify is a powerful tool that will read any text you want. It frees you to multitask, listening to content instead of reading it while you do something else, like house chores, walking, or exercising.

After you listen to the demo, choose the voice you want, and find a good reading speed, the app will prompt you to enable the Safari extension and pay for the premium subscription for $139.99 per year. You need a subscription to use the Safari extension, but you can try out the premium features for three days before committing.

With the extension active, the Speechify controls will be overlayed on all the webpages you visit. You can move the controls around if they're in your way and disable them for specific sites. Hitting the play button starts the reading immediately, and you can change the voice and speed if desired. You can also bookmark the article to read later.

If you only use Speechify occasionally in Safari, you might be better off saving your money and using Apple's more clunky "Speak Screen" tool .

App 6: Simplify Grocery Shopping

If you're looking for a way to share shopping lists with your family and make grocery shopping easier overall, Bring! Shopping List should definitely be on your iPhone or iPad. One of the first things you'll see when you install the app is an invitation form, so send it to someone that helps you grocery shop for your home. Other useful features include saving loyalty cards, discovering recipes, and customizing the lists with your own details.

The Safari extension lets you bookmark online recipes for later viewing or immediately add all the ingredients to your shopping list. Open Safari's page settings menu and tap "Transfer recipe" from your extensions list. Then, choose "Bookmark recipe" to save it to your collection or "Add ingredients to list" to add all or some of the products to a specific shopping list (it'll also add the recipe to your collection).

Best of all, Bring! is entirely free. A premium subscription for $1.99 per month or $12.99 annually removes advertisements and gives premium support, but it's not required.

App 7: Block All Unwanted Ads

There's an easy way to block all the annoying ads in Safari, and all you need is AdBlock Pro , one of the more impressive content blockers available.

Content blockers have been around on iOS and iPadOS since before the newer type of Safari extensions hit the scene, and they do exactly what it sounds like — blocks content on webpages. To enable AdBlock Pro, go to the "Extensions" menu in Safari's settings and toggle on the "Ads" option. Other options include Trackers, Social, Safety, Others, and Custom, all of which need a premium subscription to function, so you don't need to switch those on unless you subscribe.

If you've never used a content blocker before, it should be active for all websites you visit. If you have, you may need to go to Settings –> Safari –> Content Blockers to switch it on. You may also have to turn it on or off for specific websites or all other websites if you have per-site settings configured.

AdBlock Pro also has an extension you can turn on when viewing a YouTube video in Safari. When on a youtube.com video, open Safari's page settings menu and use the "AdBlock Pro" extension. Instructions will appear to show you how to block ads in YouTube videos, which the content blocker can't do on its own.

Ad blocking is free, and you can even adjust regional settings and add to your allowlist for sites you want to exclude from the restrictions. However, to get background updates, stop tracking scripts, block social buttons, block malware pages, and use other settings, you'll need a premium subscription, which runs $1.99 per month, $6.99 every six months, or $9.99 annually. Noir syncs with Apple's dark mode setting automatically for all websites, but you can also choose "Noir" from Safari's page settings menu when on a specific site to disable dark mode for it or make it dark even when your system-wide dark mode is off. You can also pick a different dark theme, set images to dim, or disable Noir until the next day.

Noir costs a flat $2.99 install, but you get lifetime access to it. If you can't afford to support the developer and future updates to the app, there's another app called Neo Noir that's free and has similar features.

The app replaces Safari's own start page, so you won't be able to sync backgrounds with your other Apple devices, but that's a small price to pay for automatic start page wallpapers. When enabled, Momentum will show you a daily photo and a quote to inspire you when opening new tabs. You can also add a to-do list and set a daily focus to boost your productivity.

It's free to install and use. For $5.99 per month or $46.99 annually, you can get Momentum Plus options such as task syncing, adding your own photos, better task organization, countdowns to important dates, world clocks, and soundscapes.

How to use speech-to-text in Safari for hands-free typing

Accessibility is a critical aspect of life for many. Most computer operating systems do a good job of making it easy for many to work with applications and macOS is no exception. Apple's OS has plenty of options available to those who require a bit of assistance.

One such option is speech-to-text. Where many operating systems struggle with this feature, macOS does an outstanding job without requiring the installation of third-party software. Out of the box, you'll find speech-to-text is not only ready to go but one of the most accurate you'll use.

Safari is no stranger to this option. In fact, it offers a ready-made solution that you can use to dictate whatever you need into the browser. Say, for instance, you run a WordPress site and you need to write a post. Using the built-in speech-to-text, you can accurately dictate that post without having to manually type a single character. Or maybe you want to create a Google Document. It's easier than you think.

Let me show you how it's done.

Enabling speech-to-text in Safari

What you'll need: To make this work, you'll need a macOS device, such as a MacBook or iMac, with an updated version of the OS (because you should be upgrading regularly for security purposes). Of course, if you want to test this by creating a Google Document, you'll also need a valid Google Account.

That's it. Let's enable speech-to-text for the Safari browser.

1. Open Safari

If you're reading this in Safari, you're one step ahead of the game. Otherwise, open Safari from either the Dock or Launch Pad.

2. Enable the feature

To enable speech-to-text, click Edit in the Menu Bar and then click Start Dictation.

Don't be misled by the Speech entry, as that is text-to-speech.

3. Agree to enable dictation

A new popup will appear, asking if you want to enable Dictation. When prompted, click OK.

You must enable Dictation before the feature will work.

4. Enable Dictation

In the confirmation popup, click Enable to enable the Dictation feature for Safari.

If you're curious as to the privacy agreement, click Dictation Privacy.

5. Use Dictation

To use the Dictation feature, open a new Google Doc or even use it to dictate URLs for Safari. Make sure you have the cursor where you need it (such as in the Google Document or in the Safari address bar) and click Edit > Start Dictation. You should see a small popup box with a mic and a Done button. That indicates the speech-to-text feature is turned on. Start dictating whatever it is you want to type. When you're finished, click Done.

You can move that small popup box to anywhere on the desktop.

The macOS speech-to-text feature is one of the most accurate I've used. And given that it's built right into the system, it's easier to use than any similar desktop dictation you'll ever experience. Also, you don't have to worry about Apple listening in on your conversations, as Dictation remains off until you start it.

Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems

Safari getting new AI tools in iOS 18

The software — expected to debut as Safari 18 later in 2024 — is currently undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of Apple's next-generation operating system updates, namely iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to people familiar with the matter. Should all of the new features make it to the release candidate stage, users will be treated to a new user interface (UI) for customizing popular page controls, a "Web eraser" feature, and AI-driven content summarization tools.

Intelligent Search - AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization

Engineers evaluating the latest builds of Safari 18 can find a toggle for the new page controls menu within the browser's address bar. The menu consolidates — and provides quick access to — old and new page control tools, among them being the browser's new "Intelligent Search" feature.

This feature is not automatically enabled in test builds of Safari 18 and instead requires manual activation from the page controls menu. Once enabled, it's believed the tool leverages Apple's on-device AI technology — specifically the Ajax language-learning model — to identify topics and key phrases within a webpage for which to base the summarization.

In selecting key phrases, Apple's LLM software identifies sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text in question. Words repeated within a text and key sentences are recognized as text topics.

These early indications suggest Apple is striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year, though the exact implementation of this feature remains fuzzy.

Apple's text summarization features could be a response to rival generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. But Apple's on-device models and technologies like Private Relay could make the experience much more secure for users. Intelligent Search is also likely to be the same AI browser assistant that one X user hinted at a couple of weeks back.

Web Eraser for better content-blocking

Also accessible from the new page controls menu is a feature Apple is testing called "Web Eraser." As its name would imply, it's designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages, according to people familiar with the feature.

The feature is expected to build upon existing privacy features within Safari and will allow users to erase unwanted content from any webpage of their choosing. Users will have the option to erase banner ads, images, text or even entire page sections, all with relative ease.

The erasure is said to be persistent, rather than limited to a browsing session. This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear.

Updated UI will move key tools into one easy location

The new page controls menu referenced throughout this article will attempt to offer Safari 18 users quick and easy access to several options previously located across different menus and the Share Sheet. Running on pre-release versions of macOS 15, for instance, the menu also pulls in the "Aa" menu common on existing iPadOS versions of the browser. These include zoom options, webpage settings for privacy controls, content blocking options, extension shortcuts, and access to the new AI and erasure tools.

These various options existed previously on macOS, but were found by navigating through the Safari settings menu. Having all of these controls in one central location in the Address Bar will make these options more discoverable for end users. Other options like on-page text search and reader mode are also in this menu.

This all suggests Apple intends to unite the iPadOS and macOS Safari UI paradigms when it unveils its new OS releases during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

AI-enhanced Visual Lookup feature could be available in 2025

Simultaneously, Apple is also working on a much more powerful visual search feature scheduled for integration sometime in 2025 that will allow users to obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images. People familiar with the tool say it's similar to the Visual Lookup feature, through which Siri can identify plants, pets and landmarks from photos.

Visual Search could be implemented as a system-wide feature. So, instead of surfacing search results in the Photos app, the user may be able to use Visual Search directly in Safari by selecting an image.

Given development of this tool is in the earlier stages, it remains unclear how Apple will ultimately go about implementing it. It also remains to be seen whether or not the feature will make it through internal testing.

The iPhone maker has expressed significant interest in artificial intelligence and more recently published research related to on-device language learning models. This goes hand in hand with widespread rumors about several other AI-powered software features, many of which are expected to make their debut later this year with iOS 18.

Another big year for Safari

From its inception, Safari was always meant to rival existing web browsers.

Safari was originally added to macOS as a means of replacing Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which was the default browser. Over the years, the app made its way to the iPhone , and has since received various upgrades over the years.

More recent versions of Safari provide users with personalized web suggestions, and allow for greater privacy protection with features such as iCloud Private Relay.

This latest set of enhancements only serves to better position Safari against the competition, in an ever-increasing landscape of generative AI tools and third-party ad-blockers.

While Apple tests many such features during different development stages, it is important to remember that not all of them make it to release. Apple has been known to delay features or cancel them entirely, so there's always a chance we may not see these new Safari features after all.

Along with Safari 18 and its associated improvements, we should also see a revamped Calculator with Math Notes make its way to iPadOS 18. Freeform Scenes and Adaptive Voice Shortcuts are new OS features, which are also expected to debut later this year.

Apple is expected to introduce various AI-related enhancements as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, both of which should be announced at the company's annual WWDC on June 10.

I use the 'Reader' function in Safari quite a bit, but sometimes it doesn't work very well. Seems like something that AI could help make better.

15 men brought to military enlistment office after mass brawl in Moscow Oblast

Local security forces brought 15 men to a military enlistment office after a mass brawl at a warehouse of the Russian Wildberries company in Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast on Feb. 8, Russian Telegram channel Shot reported .

29 people were also taken to police stations. Among the arrested were citizens of Kyrgyzstan.

A mass brawl involving over 100 employees and security personnel broke out at the Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal on Dec. 8.

The conditions of the existence of sulfide phases in Fe–Ni–S alloys and four-component Fe–50 wt % Ni–0.001 wt % S– R ( R is an alloying or impurity element from the TCFE7 database) systems are studied using the Thermo-Calc software package and the TCFE7 database. The modification of nickel superalloys by calcium or magnesium is shown to increase their ductility due to partial desulfurization, the suppression of the formation of harmful sulfide phases, and the uniform formation of strong sulfides in the entire temperature range of metal solidification. The manufacturability of superalloys can decrease at a too high calcium or magnesium content because of the formation of intermetallics with a low melting temperature along grain boundaries.
