Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve San Diego

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Arrow

A short 30-minute drive outside of downtown San Diego , this 1,750-acre oceanfront reserve promises sweeping ocean views for hikers. ( See our  favorite San Diego area hikes, here. ) The reserve is dedicated to preserving its namesake tree, the Torrey Pine, and surrounding wildlife, but travelers and locals come for the miles of trails through pine forests and sandstone canyons, and the 4.5-mile Torrey Pines State Beach. Torrey Pines is no hidden secret, but there's a reason crowds flock here. Plans to go are easy to make: The reserve is open 365 days a year, from sunrise to sunset, and all entering cars must pay an admission fee, which ranges from $10-$25 (or free with a California State Parks Vehicle Day Use Pass ), depending on whether you park in the the North or South Beach parking lots. Keep in mind the visitors center is currently closed and guided hikes aren't offered at the moment.

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego — Museum Review Arrow

This local institution devoted to showcasing modern art is perched right across from the Pacific Ocean in the tony coastal community of La Jolla just outside San Diego , and recently reopened its doors after an extensive $105 million overhaul. This is the flagship location for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (there is a second location downtown), and the building was originally designed by architect Irving Gill as a home for philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps–it was later converted into a museum in 1941. Today, MCASD has more than 4,000 pieces from renowned and emerging artists in its collection. If you’re pressed for time, be sure to check out what’s on display in the special exhibition gallery, as well as the paintings by Andy Warhol.

San Diego Zoo

San Diego Zoo Arrow

The world-renowned San Diego Zoo spans 100 acres and houses more than 12,000 rare and endangered animals. Plan to spend at least a half-day at the zoo to get the full experience, which includes shows and animal presentations. During the summer, Nighttime Zoo event series allows visitors to stay later into the evening. There are plenty of restaurants throughout the park where parents can recuperate with a much-needed afternoon beer.

San Diego Torrey Pines Gold Course

Torrey Pines Golf Course Arrow

The iconic Torrey Pines Golf Course is known for its two 18-hole championship courses that sit on a cliff overlooking the Pacific. From the scenery and challenging greens to the prestige factor, this course is a bucket-list destination for avid golfers—Tiger Woods has clinched career-defining wins here, and the word is former President Obama has teed off here, too. Every January, it hosts the Farmers Insurance Open, one of the top events in the PGA Tour, and the U.S. Open was held here in 2021. There's diverse terrain, ocean views, and hang gliders usually floating around holes 12 and 13 on the south course.

San Diego Belmont Park

Belmont Park Arrow

Amusement parks can be kitschy, indulgent, and a little cheesy—and at Belmont Park, we embrace it. The ocean-adjacent mini amusement park is hard to miss as you drive west on Mission Bay Drive, thanks to the towering Giant Dipper, a 2,600-foot-long roller coaster that soars above the park and offers ocean views. If you're ready for more, have a go on other classics like the Tilt-a-Whirl, zipline, or bumper cars. For lower-octane pursuits, there's also an arcade and carousel.

Balboa Park San Diego

Balboa Park Arrow

Balboa Park is the cultural heart of San Diego , filled with world-class museums, restaurants, and beautiful greenery. The lush, 1,200-acre urban oasis is also home to nearly 30 museums and cultural centers, plus the world-famous San Diego Zoo. There are more than a dozen attractions in the park, each with its own events and special exhibitions.

La Jolla Cove San Diego

La Jolla Cove Arrow

Luxuriate in SoCal splendor in the upscale seaside village of La Jolla Cove, a quick 20-minute drive from downtown San Diego . Wind through Prospect Street to browse shops like the iconic Warwick’s, the nation's oldest family-run bookstore, or dine with an ocean view at high-end restaurants like seafood-centric George’s at the Cove. Walk along seaside Coast Boulevard for primo photo ops of the cliffs, stopping at the Children’s Pool to watch sunbathing seals camped on the rocks. Head to Peter Lik fine art gallery for awe-inspiring landscape photography . And, if you need to, recharge your battery at Ellen Browning Scripps Park, a grassy area ideal for picnics and watching the sunset. Fun fact: It's the most-photographed place in San Diego.

Little Italy San Diego

Little Italy Arrow

This quaint neighborhood is the place to go for charming Italian restaurants and bakeries, wine bars, and boutique shopping. The main thoroughfare along India Street is home to trusty favorite Italian spots like Barbusa, Buon Appetito, and Civico 1845, but the neighborhood has made room for several non-Italian restaurants in recent years, such as Ironside Fish & Oyster , Juniper & Ivy , and Queenstown Public House. There's also a popular farmers market on Saturdays. The nightlife scene in Little Italy draws people in their thirties and forties.

San Diego Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcal

Mission Basilica San Diego de AlcalĂĄ Arrow

There are 21 missions dotting the California coast, and San Diego lays claim to the first. Established in 1769, Mission San Diego de Alcalá is the physical representation of Christianity's birth on the West Coast. Even today, you can worship here—it's an active parish with Mass held daily—but even if you aren't a practicing Catholic, the mission is still a sight to behold, with white stucco walls, Spanish roof tiles, and grand archways. It stands on a hill overlooking Old Town with gorgeous views.

Petco Park San Diego

Petco Park Arrow

Petco Park is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening in San Diego , but the appeal doesn't stop at baseball. The stadium was named the best MLB ballpark to watch a game at by USA Today in 2022, and is among the few in the nation with a water view–it's a stone's throw from San Diego Bay. Hop heads will love the stellar local craft beer options: there are more than 40 different varieties poured at stalls and restaurants around the stadium. And with more than 50 dining options, Petco Park's culinary appeal stretches far beyond hot dogs. Many local restaurants run operations in the stadium, including Carnitas’ Snack Shack, Hodad’s, and Grand Ole BBQ. Some notable eateries that opened here in the past year include famed soup dumpling purveyor Din Tai Fung, Sambazon (acai bowls), Jack in the Box (the company was founded in San Diego) and San Diego’s Finest Hot Chicken.

Sunset Cliffs San Diego

Sunset Cliffs Arrow

Set atop jagged, postcard-worthy sea cliffs, San Diego 's aptly named Sunset Cliffs neighborhood rewards visitors with panoramic ocean views. Hands down San Diego's most popular spot at dusk, Sunset Cliffs attracts a crowd nightly for its serene, picture-perfect views. Part of the neighborhood overlaps with Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, a 68-acre reserve known for its sea caves, rock arch formations, and extremely steep bluffs. Follow a path along the cliffs for a scenic walk, while making note of the sprawling homes nearby. Head up the hill to the nearby Little Lion CafĂ© for a healthy, Cali-bistro fare to-go or dine on their small patio. Or grab classic French dessert with a Cuban twist—like passion fruit caramels and a mango cheesecake—at Chef Vivian Hernandez-Jackson's excellent neighborhood patisserie Azucar and head to the water for a sweet sunset.

Del Mar Racetrack San Diego

Del Mar Racetrack Arrow

The Del Mar Racetrack is a spectacle for high rollers and casual gamblers alike, with lightening-fast horse races that'll get your heart pumping. The track is open Thursday through Sunday, holding about eight to 12 races daily. There are 30 minutes between races to place your bets or refill your drink. In general, it's mostly adults here, but during the track's non-racing hours, the venue holds special events like food truck festivals and concerts that can bring a more diverse age range. General admission tickets are $8.

USS Midway Museum San Diego

USS Midway Museum Arrow

This 971-foot-long floating museum is the best way to learn about and honor San Diego 's significant naval community. The decommissioned aircraft carrier is one of the most popular attractions in San Diego. Visitors can get a taste of navy life by visiting the plane-packed flight deck, sprawling hangar bay, mess hall, and berthing. The museum hosts about 400 active-duty military events annually—including reenlistment, retirement, and change-of-command ceremonies—which are all open for the public to observe.

Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo statue and panorama of San Diego California

Cabrillo National Monument Arrow

This nature preserve and historic site at the edge of the Point Loma peninsula is one of the most picturesque spots in San Diego . It’s about 20 minutes from downtown, with the scenic ocean views starting from the moment you drive in. Once you park at the visitor center, you’re treated to panoramic views of San Diego Bay, downtown, Coronado, and the naval station on North Island. On clear afternoons, you can see all the way to Tijuana, Mexico. The park spans 140-plus acres, and there’s plenty of outdoor activities here from hiking trails to exploring tide pools, or just enjoying the views from one of the many overlooks. Cabrillo National Monument is a landmark where several milestones in San Diego’s modern history converge.

Whaley House in Old Town San Diego California United States of America

The Whaley House Museum Arrow

The Whaley House Museum has been called one of the most haunted houses in the United States. The two-story Greek Revival-style home was built by businessman Thomas Whaley in 1857, and the Whaleys experienced several tragedies after moving into the home, including the deaths of two of their children. The property was already rumored to be haunted before the home was built since the grounds were once an execution yard, and paranormal activity is said to occur in the house to this day. A guided evening tour is the way to go here. Being in the home after sundown adds to the spine-tingling effect, and the guides–who are dressed in Victorian-era clothing–are enthusiastic storytellers. The details they share about the neighborhood’s history, the Whaley family, and the tragedies that happened on the property makes it all engaging and brings the house to life.

San Diego Chicano Park murals Barrio Logan

Barrio Logan Arrow

One of California's 14 Cultural Districts, this historic, artsy neighborhood is rooted in Mexican and Chicano cultures. The most obvious proof is Chicano Park, the neighborhood's collection of more than 80 outdoor murals painted onto the concrete girders of the Coronado Bridge. The larger-than-life portraits depict iconic cultural figures, like revolutionary Emiliano Zapata and Aztec goddesses. Many of the hip, modern businesses that have landed are still rooted in the community's culture. There's Por Vida for coffee, Border X Brewing for Mexican-inspired craft beers like a horchata brew, Salud! for street tacos that garners long (long) lines, and Simón Limón, which sells beauty and home goods. And for old-school flavor and some of the best Mexican food in San Diego , don't miss a meal at Las Cuatro Milpas , but get there early—they usually sell out by lunchtime.

Bridge to Coronado San Diego

Coronado Arrow

The dreamy city of Coronado is an island (technically, a peninsula) stronghold of hotels, resorts, and beach-front restaurants. Make the short, two-mile journey over one of San Diego ’s most recognizable structures, Coronado Bridge, or take the ferry to get there. The main business district, which hugs Orange Avenue, is filled with shops, restaurants, and family-friendly hangouts like MooTime Creamery, so it's a popular spot for families. And, of course, the famous Hotel Del Coronado continues to be a draw.

Cedros Ave Arts San Diego

Cedros Avenue Design District Arrow

Take a stroll down the palm tree-lined Cedros Avenue Design District in sunny Solana Beach to shop at eclectic local independent boutiques, galleries, and home goods stores. With more than 85 shops jam-packed into a petite two-and-a-half blocks, this condensed district can be easily traversed within an afternoon. But you might want to spend more time: there's plenty of local art to catch at the galleries, along with great stores for clothing, and a fantastic farmers market on Sundays.

San Diego Tiki Bars and An Honest Review of Tiki Oasis

By waitingforrain28

On September 25, 2021

In Restaurants , U.S. Travel

As the tiki folks who read my guide to Phoenix tiki bars know, I still have a lot to learn about the world of tiki. But we have really gotten into the scene (in my introverted way) since our first tiki bar out in Las Vegas. I’ve been to all the tiki bars in Arizona, visited tiki bars across the Midwest, started collecting signature tiki mugs
And we started our home bar with tiki recipe books. Needless to say, I really enjoy this corner of Americana. So, when we got vaccinated in the year of our Lord 2021, we wanted to celebrate with tickets to Tiki Oasis. It seemed like the biggest tiki celebration we’d probably ever have the chance to attend, and it was nestled among some of the amazing modern San Diego tiki bars. So, we made a weekend of it.

Whether you are considering Tiki Oasis in what I hope to be less strange years post-2021, or will be visiting San Diego in general and want to see the tiki sights, this little, honest guide is for you.

The Wonderful World of San Diego Tiki Bars

San Diego is home to one of the oldest tiki restaurants still in operation in the US. It’s got the sun and sea for tiki. And its modern tiki bars are exceptionally fun.

For anyone looking to get into tiki or cross a few special places off of their tiki bucketlist, San Diego is a must-visit location. There is a tiki bar for everyone here.

  • 1 The Wonderful World of San Diego Tiki Bars
  • 2.1 Food and Drinks at the Bali Hai
  • 3 False Idol
  • 4.1 Drinks and Atmosphere at Forbidden Cove
  • 5.1 Food and Drink at Grass Skirt
  • 6.1 An Event for Hardcore Tiki Fans

(c) ABR 2021

The Bali Hai is a tiki classic, which opened all the way back in 1954. You can delve into the story of this historic restaurant on their website, but no tiki trip to San Diego tiki bars would be complete without a visit. At least, not if you’ve never been.

For as special as it is, the Bali Hai isn’t really what I would consider my jam when it comes to tiki. The restaurant is beautiful, and the views are unmatched, with its huge glass walls. But it’s really more of a classy place for date night than it is a fun-loving tiki place. The prices are higher, and the food is fancier. But it also lacks the immersion of other tiki restaurants/bars on this list. Also, while I think it is inarguable that tiki has questionable roots, there are some strong
inappropriate vibes when it comes to the Bali Hai signature tiki mug and the giant head that adorns the top of the building. I know it’s historic, but we didn’t even bother buying a mug because it just felt
a little too on the nose. I know people will have differing opinions than me on this in both directions when it comes to tiki, and I think all perspectives are legit. But for me, it was an additional element that just made Bali Hai one of my less favorite tiki spots in San Diego.

Food and Drinks at the Bali Hai

In terms of food, I wasn’t disappointed. But again, this is a classy date night sort of menu. By this, I mean the entrees are expensive, and don’t include sides. But everything that we ordered was amazingly delicious and I enjoyed every bite.

I can’t quite say the same of the drinks. Perhaps because they were a bit too alcoholic for me. But for those of you less concerned about that, the Mai Tai is their classic drink. Although it is notably stronger than most (so much so that it is noted on the menu). They also limit how many you can order due to this as well.

That being said, the Bali Hai has served 2 million mai tais and counting; consider getting one for yourself if you are ready for the intensity of their drinks. And again, even though it wasn’t my personal favorite, I did enjoy visiting, and it’s a bucketlist tiki restaurant for its historic role in the sub-culture.

Ok, so I have to be honest here, we weren’t able to get a reservation at False Idol . So, I can’t tell you what it was like. However, from what I have seen online, this is a spot much enjoyed by the tiki crowd. If you can get a reservation here, I’d suggest it. (Let me know how it is! *sobs*) I hope to make it here someday in the future.

Forbidden Cove

san diego tiki bars

The Forbidden Cove is a bit of an odd one among San Diego tiki bars, and I have mixed feelings about it. This little speakeasy-style tiki bar is located inside of another bar, Kilowatt. The brewery/bar that you have to go through in order to find the Forbidden Cove wasn’t my style at all. And no shade to anyone who does enjoy places like Kilowatt, but it reminded me of the chaos of Animal House and kind of had that party-brewhouse feel. It wasn’t exactly the kind of place I wanted to be struggling to find a speakeasy in.

And getting into the Forbidden Cove was a bit confusing, to the point that I can’t even exactly tell you how to get in. I think you need to ask the bartender in Kilowatt for an idol. Then you can use it as a key to open a door behind the brew barrels to get into the speakeasy. However, we didn’t know that, and sort of lucked out when someone else came out of Forbidden Cove. We were able to slip in. Since we had reservations, it was a little frustrating not knowing the process and the bartenders at Kilowatt were too busy to help.

Drinks and Atmosphere at Forbidden Cove

san diego tiki bars

In any case, once we got in, I really enjoyed the atmosphere that they created in the speakeasy. It was a dark room, with glowing lights of various colors, and tiki accents everywhere. I have read that some consider this spectacular tiki vibe to be a rip-off of False Idol. But since I didn’t manage to visit there, I can’t say if I agree. For what it was, I thought the atmosphere in Forbidden Cove was very nice. We also had the chance to experience it when it was near capacity and when it emptied out. Full capacity wasn’t nearly as fun and relaxing, but it also didn’t make me want to throw down my drink and swim out through the crowd.

Now, when it comes to the drinks at Forbidden Cove, things get a little
unique. They don’t use rum in their tiki drinks, they use undistilled sugar cane liquor. Some people find the flavor of this alcohol to be a bit odd, and it definitely wasn’t a rum flavor in the least. I wasn’t bothered by it myself, but if you are looking for traditional tiki flavors, you won’t find them here.

All things considered, I think some hardcore tiki fans will find this place a little off-putting. But if you go willing to try the unique flavors and enjoy the speakeasy, you will have a good time. Forbidden Cove is only open on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 until midnight. It’s highly suggested that you get a reservation.

The Grass Skirt

san diego tiki bars

Of every San Diego tiki bar related thing that I did during my Tiki Oasis weekend, the Grass Skirt was my favorite. Amazing tiki atmosphere, great drinks, good food, and an adventurous find.

Although I wasn’t aware of this when we planned our trip, the Grass Skirt is a speakeasy! And it isn’t as confusing to find as the Forbidden Cove, so I don’t want to spoil the fun for you. Keep your eyes peeled for signs of tiki as you search for the entrance, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Once you find your way inside the tiki bar, you will not be disappointed. There are beautiful little surprises by way of décor around every corner. The patio is host to a massive tiki head fireplace. There are little couched tables lining the outer walls that feel like escapes. And the bar is festooned with golden skulls, tiki memorabilia, and tv screens that lend atmospheric interest more or less throughout the night. There is even a gigantic tiki head with a table inside it for people with large enough parties.

Food and Drink at Grass Skirt

san diego tiki bars

The tiki drinks here are traditional, with a little twist here and there. But nothing surprising in a disappointing way. All great flavors, from traditional to signature. The Grass Skirt also has some really nice food options. The menu isn’t huge, but each is an Asian-Polynesian fusion dish made with love. There are some really nice, healthy options here as well, like the ahi poke.

As far as I am concerned, you can’t go wrong with this place. Get a reservation ahead of time, and come enjoy yourself. You won’t be disappointed. They are open every day from five until at least 11pm, except for Mondays, when they are closed.

My Honest Opinion of Tiki Oasis

san diego tiki bars

I have been to quite a few conventions (although mostly nerd-related). I used to work Phoenix’s Comicon (it got renamed due to San Diego Comicon suing con in another state, coincidentally) every year for about 6-7 years until COVID-19, I’ve also been to Star Wars Celebration, a couple anime cons, and cultural celebrations as well. And these experiences left me a little
 confused by Tiki Oasis .

Primarily because I ended up feeling like my ticket price really didn’t cover anything. After paying about $155 per person for the event, every single panel/class/talk was extra. It was a really expensive ticket, in my opinion, for it to not include anything. And while I think the organizers did their best to make this clear when tickets were purchased, I was a little shocked by how restrictive the ticket really was in practice- compared to every other convention I have been to.

Frankly, the best part of Tiki Oasis for me was the vendor hall, but that wasn’t worth what I paid to get in.

An Event for Hardcore Tiki Fans

san diego tiki bars

Now, all that being said, that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t get your money’s worth. Many people that went really went all out with their weekend. They dressed up every day, they stayed at the convention hotel and decorated their balconies. They really really immersed themselves in the tiki culture in ways that you can’t do anywhere else. For people who love tiki, have friends who love it, and are way more outgoing than me, I think Tiki Oasis was probably a wonderful experience. And if the tickets hadn’t been so expensive, I’m sure I would have been more excited about my experience as well.

As it is, I wouldn’t suggest paying for a ticket unless you are really going to go all out for the weekend. Far better to come and visit the vendor hall when it is open to the public, or just enjoy the tiki culture of San Diego on your own time- if the cost of a limited ticket seems like something that would get under your skin like it did mine.

I wish we had explored some of these on our recent trip to San Diego! I think there was within walking distance from our hotel. Gives us a great reason to go back!

' src=

waitingforrain28

Oh yeah! It’s amazing how there is always something new to explore in San Diego!

' src=

I had no idea that Tiki Bars were a ‘thing’! It sounds like a fun thing to look out for and discover as you travel.

Yeah! I am always on the look out for new tiki bars to visit now.

' src=

I woulde live to visit these bars!

They definitely are fun. 😉

' src=

I’ve been to San Diego many times and didn’t realize tiki bars were so big there. How fun! Thanks for the review of Tiki Oasis!

Of course! The tiki community is really lovely; so, it’s really fun to explore all the cool places that have come about from its resurgence.

' src=

These look really fun! I mean, I am with you, I don’t think the convention sounds worth $155 if you have to pay for everything else as well (I’ve never been to a convention like that!)

I think I’d skip that and just visit the bars.

Yeah, it was a culture shock issue for me. I’ve never be too or run a convention like that, but I do know alot of people really really love it. So, no shade, but I think visiting the bars is better for those of us in our boat.

' src=

I didn’t know tiki was a thing! Very interesting intro for me. If I ever get to San Diego I’ll have to check these out.

Yes! Tiki popped up in the 50-60s in the US, disappeared for a while, and has recently re-emerged. It’s a really interesting mix of historic and new bars.

' src=

While I like the Tiki bars I’ve been to I’m not sure about a convention around them, especially since it is quite a lot of money. But I like the look of some of these bars and may have to look into some places like this on my next trip to San Diego.

The bars are super fun if you have enjoyed tiki in the past. But yeah, I think the convention is really for the hardcore fans.

' src=

I haven’t been to a tiki bar before, but San Diego looks like the perfect place to try one out for the first time. There are so many to choose from!

100%!!! San Diego is the perfect town to try it for the first time.

' src=

I’ve never visited at tiki bar before, but they look like fun! The Grass Skirt looks beautiful and relaxing. I’d love to try it out. Thanks for the great guide!

Definitely give one a try. They are very interesting, if nothing else. But we love the creativity that goes into their atmospheres.

' src=

These sound so fun. We love visiting Tiki Bars! Thank you for your honest opinions. I will save this for when we make it back to San Diego!

' src=

We’ve never been to one like this where it’s an event? San Diego had such good foodie spots though that it looks like a good place to try. Thanks for the honest review!

100% – San Diego is SUCH a fun spot for the event and tiki bar hopping.

' src=

Tiki oasis is very $ money Hungry. Most of the tickets are actually $200 or more. The organizers and hotel nickel and dime and overcharge for everything. All the benefits are supplied by other companies. Not worth it.

It really is too bad. I think the tickets should at least include all the sessions and events.

Planning a trip to San Diego in January- this might be a fun activity!

Safety tips from the US government for Americans traveling to Mexico

A travel advisory for the country has been in effect since late august 2023, by dana williams • published may 4, 2024 • updated on may 4, 2024 at 5:24 pm.

The U.S. Department of State has been cautioning Americans to reconsider travel to Baja California, the region of Mexico, where four bodies were recently found .

The warning is part of a travel advisory for the country that has been in effect since late August 2023. According to the department’s website, “violent crime – such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking and robbery – is widespread and common in Mexico.”

It also adds that because U.S. government employees are restricted or prohibited from going to certain areas in Mexico, it makes it difficult for them to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens who might need it.

However, they shared tips for Americans who travel to the region against their warning:

Get San Diego local news, weather forecasts, sports and lifestyle stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters.
  • Keep friends and family informed of your travel plans.
  • If separating from a group, share your GPS location with a friend.
  • If taking a taxi alone, take a photo of the taxi’s number and/or plate and send it to a friend.
  • Use toll roads when you can and do not drive alone or at night.
  • Be extra cautious when visiting local bars, nightclubs or casinos.
  • Do not show any signs of wealth (i.e. jewelry, etc.)
  • Be vigilant around banks and ATMs.

The department also suggests enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program .

After leading April in migrant encounters, San Diego Sector seeing May numbers soar

S AN DIEGO ( Border Report ) — The Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector surpassed 37,000 migrant apprehensions in April, more than any of the other nine sectors along the southern border, and Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel said her agents already apprehended 8,303 migrants from 66 countries during the first week of May.

San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who has been critical of the ongoing migrant influx in the region, said Border Patrol agents are overwhelmed.

“We ought to be able to manage the numbers that are coming across,” he said. “One of the other things we are seeing in San Diego County is boat landings, boats just being beached up on our beaches — about four per week, and about a dozen people jump into a neighborhood. We don’t know who they are, where they are going or what their intentions are.”

Desmond is also concerned with the amount of money being spent on migrant services.

“The County of San Diego spent $6 million on a migrant drop-off site that was open for four months,” he said.

The facility closed in February after the county stopped funding it.

It was operated by a non-governmental organization that used some of the funds to buy airline tickets to help the migrants get to their final destinations.

“Border Patrol was Uber for the migrants; we became the travel agents,” Desmond said.

With the county recently receiving more than $19 million from the federal government aimed toward migrant services, Desmond believes the money can be better spent in other ways.

“I think that money should be spent on the vetting of people and securing our beaches so we don’t have boats just dropping off,” he said. “We should be securing or at least allowing our Border Patrol agents resources so they can properly vet people.”

Desmond hopes the money doesn’t end up supporting another migrant facility.

“Unfortunately, at the rate we spent money before, the $19 million is going to be able to get us one year, so after that what happens? It’s going to be back on our laps.”

But some advocates like Pedro Rios, with the American Friends Service Committee, believe the money should be spent on the migrants.

“People that have endured so much and continue to suffer. If we can alleviate that suffering momentarily, we’re doing something that’s good for them,” he said.

Rios told Border Report it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure asylum-seekers — people he says have every right to be here — are taken care of.

“There are laws in the United States that say when someone is fleeing harm and wishes to seek asylum they have the right to do so, whether it’s entering through one of these locations or showing up at a port of entry it’s their right under the Constitution and international agreements to seek asylum.”

Rios insists people have no reason to fear asylum-seekers, especially those being released by Border Patrol agents at public locations around the county.

“Everyone who is being dropped off at our public transportation system is dropped off with paperwork indicating they’ve been processed, they’ve been vetted, and their backgrounds have been checked,” said Rios. “They have a court date, they are responsible for showing up for that court date and providing information about where they’re staying.”

One thing Rios and Desmond agree upon is that a solution has to be found.

75-year-old ‘mastermind’ of a 2005 armed robbery that killed a UK police officer sentenced to life

A 75-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced Friday for the murder of a British police officer who was shot dead during an armed robbery in northern England nearly two decades ago.

Piran Ditta Khan was convicted in April, as he had fled the country to Pakistan soon after the murder of Sharon Beshenivsky. He was extradited to the U.K. last year.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard sentenced him in Leeds Crown Court to life imprisonment. He must serve a minimum term of 40 years in prison.

“You will inevitably spend the remainder of your life in custody, but that is a consequence of sentencing a man of your age for a crime of this particular gravity,” he said. “You have had your younger and healthier years at liberty because you chose to leave the country when you feared you were about to be arrested.”

Though Khan stayed in the lookout car during the robbery at the family-run Universal Express travel agents in the city of Bradford in November 2005, prosecutors argued that he was the “mastermind” behind the robbery as he organized it and purchased the weapons. Police officers in Britain do not carry guns on routine patrols.

“Even though he did not fire the fatal shot, his actions stole from Sharon and those who knew her a lifetime together, and as he is sentenced today our thoughts remain with her family and loved ones,” said specialist prosecutor David Holderness.

Beshenivsky was 38 years old and only nine months into the job when she responded to an alert about the robbery. She was shot dead at point-blank range by one of the three men who carried out the robbery. Her colleague, Teresa Milburn, survived after being shot in the chest.

Beshenivsky, who had three children and two stepchildren, was gunned down on her youngest daughter’s fourth birthday. In a victim personal statement read in court, Beshenivsky’s daughter Lydia said she was “too young and innocent” to understand what happened when her mother failed to return home from work to celebrate her birthday.

“There will always be a void in my life — a void that should have been filled with my mum’s presence but as a result of violent, callous actions by you, Piran Ditta Khan, and your associates that day, you robbed me of a future and precious time with my mum,” she said. “Every birthday is a reminder of what happened that day.”

Paul Beshenivsky, who had been married to his wife for four years when she died, said telling the children what had happened was “the hardest thing I have ever had to do.”

Khan fled to Pakistan two months after the robbery. He was arrested by local authorities in Pakistan in January 2020 and extradited to the U.K. last year.

Khan denied the allegations.

Pair of giant pandas set to travel from China to San Diego Zoo under conservation partnership

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A pair of giant pandas will soon make the journey from China to the U.S., where they will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo as part of an ongoing conservation partnership between the two nations, officials said Monday.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers recently visited China to meet the giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their planned trip to Southern California. An exact date for the handoff hasn’t been set.

Yun Chuan, a mild-mannered male who’s nearly 5 years old, has “deep connections” to California, the wildlife alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.

Xin Bao is a nearly 4-year-old female described as “a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears.”

“Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special,” said Dr. Megan Owen, the alliance’s vice president of conservation science. “It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego.”

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has a nearly 30-year partnership with leading conservation institutions in China focused on protecting and recovering giant pandas and the bamboo forests they depend on.
