By Allison Hussey

The band have previewed their next LP with the track “DC Special Sha La La.” Check it out below with the rest of the tracklist and the band’s forthcoming tour dates.
Skeeter Enoch Thompson, Kent Stax, and brothers Franz and Pete Stahl released Still Screaming , their first album together, in 1983. The album features further contributions from Amy Pickering, Mark Cisneros, Joe Lally, and more. Dave Grohl, who served as the band’s drummer for a spell later in the 1980s, also makes an appearance on DC Special.
Scream last issued new music in 2011 with their Complete Control Recording Sessions EP. Their most recent studio album is 1993’s Fumble .

Album Review: Scream – DC Special
- November 8, 2023
You might know Scream as prominent figures of the ’80’s DC hardcore scene, the band whose debut record (1983’s Ian MacKay-produced Still Screaming ) was the first full-length out on Dischord Records, the band that four albums into their career featured a teenage Dave Grohl on drums before he joined Nirvana.
Now, 30 years on from their last full-length studio album (1993’s Fumble ), the original four-piece of brothers Peter and Franz Stahl, bassist Enoch “Skeeter” Thompson, and (sadly, now recently deceased) drummer Kent Stax, unveil DC Special —a tribute to both the city they made a name for themselves in and the bands they’ve been inspired by. Quite possibly the best thing they’ve ever done, it’s undoubtedly the richest and most varied.
Wow. Where did this come from?
Coming full circle, DC Special —just like the band’s debut 40 years earlier—was recorded by Don Zientara at his Inner Ear studio. It would turn out to be the final recording before the studio was evicted from its long-time location. All this was back in 2021. Mixing of the album had to be pushed back, but now, at the end of 2023, it finally sees the light of day and it’s more than worth the wait.
Featuring contributions by such long-time friends and collaborators as Amy Pickering (Fire Party), Grohl, MacKaye, Joe Lally (Fugazi) and Bob Berberich (whose ’60’s rock n roll group had been managed by Stahl senior), it’s the core of the Stahls, Thompson, and Stax that really make this record, with each one of them at the top of their game.
Already a wonderful testament to the then and now of DC, the subsequent untimely passing of Stax adds an extra level of poignancy. Listening to DC Special, it’s hard to imagine a more fitting tribute to the late drummer.
Ok, so there’s no shortage of lore and history, but what about the songs? What has DC Special got that makes it so … special?
It’s got catchy hooks, top-level performances, energizing choruses, great, versatile vocals, lyricism, crisp production, celebratory, fist-pumping fire, authentic tales of DC life and a treasure trove of easter eggs tucked away in audio snippets of conversations and found sounds.
Then there’s the musical variety. DC Special makes labelling Scream as hardcore or post-hardcore look silly. The album is like going to an all-day music festival where each band ups the ante, and you think, “The next one can’t be as good,” but they are (each in their own unique way). It’s also like a greatest hits collection of DC (except with songs you’ve never heard before). Rock ‘n’ roll without limitations.
So you can have the full-tilt Bad Brains evoking hardcore of “Hel Nah” and the on-the-corner preaching of “Represent” wrapped around the chilled reggae of “Tum Tum” and it flows just fine. Those three tracks themselves are bookended by the thrilling, Fugazi-groove-infused, melodic rock of “Somebody Love” (featuring great guitar work by Franz Stahl) and the energized, off-kilter riffing of “Dead Cities” (itself featuring some stand-out guitar playing from guest Clint Walsh, and a chorus that demands you get to your feet).
There’s the touching, stripped-back, acoustic campfire rock n roll of “Last of the Soft” and the anthemic stomp of “Vanishing Commissars.” Maybe even best of all, there’s the (sort of) closer “Lifeline,” with its emotive guitar lines and one of Peter Stahl’s standout vocal performances (not to mention some neat harmonica playing).
It’s the kind of song that you want to hear again, and you do, because then you get six bonus tracks (all of them notable and bringing more musical twists), one of which is an alternate “Lifeline.” It turns out that Peter and Franz couldn’t agree on how they wanted the track to sound, so they included both versions. Which is better? It’s hard to say, but that’s kind of like picking a favorite song on the album, there’s no shortage of worthy contenders.
On what other album this year could you hear (real or imagined) musical nods to everything from Jane’s Addiction, to Hüsker Du, to Neil Young, to Masters of Reality, to the Rolling Stones, to Tom Petty and to the Damned? If it’s out there, it’s definitely something special.
Hyperbole is a seductive little trap for any writer. This might not be your record of the year, but it could well be mine.
“Night Steals the light away / We were born to lose / Life’s too short to say goodbye / A D.C. special.”

A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer

DEATH TO ALL Announces May/June 2024 'The Scream Of Perseverance Tour' With CRYPTOPSY
DEATH TO ALL ( DTA ) — which features former members of DEATH celebrating the life and music of Chuck Schuldiner — will embark on "The Scream Of Perseverance Tour" in May.
The current lineup of DEATH TO ALL includes Gene Hoglan (also of DARK ANGEL and DETHKLOK ), Steve DiGiorgio ( TESTAMENT , CONTROL DENIED , SADUS ) on bass and Bobby Koelble on guitar. Max Phelps ( CYNIC ),who has been touring with DEATH TO ALL , is once again handling the vocal and second-guitar duties.
DEATH TO ALL is a unique opportunity for a new generation of metalheads to experience the genius of DEATH and Schuldiner first-hand.
Hoglan says: " DEATH TO ALL is really excited to be hitting the road on the 'The Scream of Perseverance Tour' with special guests CRYPTOPSY . The North American tour will bring three different, special and exciting shows encapsulating the two equally important eras of DEATH ."
"The Scream Of Perserverance Tour" features unique two-night stints in multiple cities, where the first night will be an old-school, brutal night featuring, in its entirety, the album which started the DEATH legacy, "Scream Bloody Gore" , as well as classic tunes from "Leprosy" and "Spiritual Healing" . The second night will feature the finishing touch in DEATH 's history, "The Sound Of Perseverance" , as well as timeless classics from the technical and more melodic era of DEATH , "Human" , "Individual Thought Patterns" and "Symbolic" . Also, in certain cities, the sets will be "From First To Last", where DEATH TO ALL play the mightiest bangers from every DEATH album.
Hoglan adds: "We’ll be joined by our good friends, the legendary CRYPTOPSY , who have some special plans of their own for this tour.
" DEATH TO ALL is extremely pleased to be bringing these special nights to the fans of the one and only Chuck Schuldiner ... as only DEATH TO ALL can...his entire DEATH legacy! As Chuck liked to say, 'let the Metal flow.' You'll want to catch every night possible."
CRYPTOPSY shares: " CRYPTOPSY is very much looking forward to sharing the stage with the iconic and symbolic DEATH TO ALL band! Since the tour will be hitting major U.S. markets two nights back to back, we plan on giving the fans two unique setlists. One that consists of classic old-school first-generation CRYPTOPSY tracks and a second that'll focus more on the newer generation.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate DEATH 's legacy alongside DEATH TO ALL . We welcome you all to bear witness to this epic tour!"

In a 2014 interview with Metal Rules , DiGiorgio was asked what DEATH TO ALL means to him. He responded: "Our formulated answer is that it is a tribute memorializing the memory of Chuck . To me, it means getting back with buddies. And you've seen their lineup change a little bit here. We had Paul [ Masvidal ] and Sean [ Reinert ] from CYNIC . We had Shannon Hamm in for a while. And now Gene and Bobby . I've jammed with all these guys over the years. They're pretty much some of the best musicians in the world. At least in my opinion."
He continued: "We did those albums back in the day, and when our cycle was over, and when whoever lasted however long, we went our own ways. Now we're back together again and it's cool, from my point of view, to do music with some of the best, amazing musicians/guys in the world. It's awesome. And we have a lot of fun every night, man, because we all realize that not only did we make a statement [30]-something years ago, but here we are [30]-something years later in our [50s] playing that stuff as we did as young men. It's kind of, like, yay us. Because… we're playing this music we did just turning the corner into 20 and we're doing it pretty good. And that's not a brag. The reason is we push each other. Somebody falls a little bit behind and this guy's right behind him. You don't want to let your guard down, because everybody's really good at what they do. And that's what it means to me, man. It means to carry on what we did back then with no idea where we'd be in the future, and here we are doing it with conviction."
Schuldiner died on December 13, 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.
In recent years, DEATH 's storied catalog has undergone a meticulous reissue campaign via Relapse Records .
Relapse released the first-ever fully authorized DEATH tab book, featuring 21 classic songs tabbed out for guitar from the band's entire discography. The book, which includes traditional notation as well as tablature, also comes with a digital download of all tracks.
In a 2011 interview with Bass Musician magazine, DiGiorgio stated about working with Schuldiner : "Sometimes people make good music together, and sometimes they vibe like yin and fucking yang. Chuck is credited with a lot of things in the music world (metal world, of course),but one thing a lot of people don't know much about is how aware he was. What I mean is that he was a good listener. If I thought of a wacky bassline to something he was writing, before I could even try to explain why it came to me, he was already ahead of it and looking for something on the next part. He had a good sense of when to hold me back and when to push me. It was great to have someone, especially the 'main man' of the band not only appreciate what I contributed but also help me find my inner demon to conjure even sicker and more abstract things to play. There really was some math going on in that roiling storm sometimes."

ICE NINE KILLS put their bloody fingerprints all over THE SILVER SCREAM CONVENTION, a brand-new weekend of macabre celebration for genre fiends set in the band’s home state of Massachusetts. The band Kerrang! calls “horrorcore icons” pay homage to the celluloid classics that first possessed singer Spencer Charnas as a kid on their No. 1 Billboard Hard Rock albums The Silver Scream and The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood. In 2022, that demented love blossomed into an INK-curated horror convention! At the first-ever SILVER SCREAM CON, movie lovers, casual fans, and INK’s beloved “psychos” chopped it up with the stars of legendary horror franchises, including meet-and-greets, photo-ops, cosplay, an INK concert, and MANY MORE surprises. “The Silver Scream Con brought horror fanatics and INK fans from all over the world together to celebrate their love of on-screen slaughter”, Spencer noted. “This is the chance for our loyal psychos to not only interact with the band, but to meet the stars of the very films that our music pays tribute to.” And now Silver Scream Convention heads into it's third year now taking over Worcester for the first time this September 13-15, 2024 as the threequel everyone's been dying for!

Primal Scream is a Scottish indie rock and alternative dance group, formed by Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie in 1982, hailing from Glasgow, Scotland.
Originally formed with a host of influences ranging from punk rock to new wave, Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie first began by banging dustbin lids together and playing fuzz-guitar. Primal Scream’s debut performance came in 1982, however it wasn’t until 1984 the band made their recording debut with the single “The Orchard”, released on school friend Alan McGee's Essential Records. In 1985 Primal Scream signed with Creation Records, however despite a number of single releases, didn’t find success until Gillespie departed his other group the Jesus and the Mary Chain.
With the addition of Andrew Innes and Robert Young, the band found their single “Velocity Girl” end up on an NME cassette tape. The result was huge exposure for the developing band, and they fit the indie pop image like a hand to a glove. The band’s debut album “Sonic Flower Groove”, issued in 1987, was received with critical acclaim, as was is successor the self-titled “Primal Scream” in 1989.
The band's subsequent release saw a move away from the rock and roll aesthetic of the Rolling Stone and the Stooges, and towards the growing electronic and acid house scene. The result was “Loaded” a reworking of the existing song “I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have”, making rock and roll accessible to dance fans and dance accessible to rock and roll fans. Primal Scream’s subsequent album “Screamadelica” represented an epoch in UK pop history, it brought techno and house to a mainstream ear. The album earned remarkably rave reviews and later won the very first Mercury Music Prize in 1992.
1994’s “Give Out but Don’t Give Up” saw the band return to their hard rock element, although in comparison to its predecessors faired neither well in the charts or nor among critics. Shortly after Primal Scream contributed the lead track to the cult film “Trainspotting”, which paved the way for a darker themed well-received electronic album titled “Vanishing Point” in 1997. The band subsequently released the albums “XTRMNTR” in 2000, “Evil Heat” in 2002, “Riot City Blues” in 2006, and “More Light” in 2013.
Live reviews
Founded by the original drummer for The Jesus and Mary Chain, Bobby Gillespie, Primal Scream are absolute legends of the eighties post punk scene. Fed up with the so called “new wave”, Gillespie set out to create a different sound. Let the record reflect that he succeeded. Eventually finding a happy medium between hard rock and acid house, to see them live in their prime was a joy and delight.
Catching one of their festival sets in the early nineties (they still make the festival rounds in the UK, so you haven’t missed your chance) was one of the highlights of my misspent youth. From the very start Primal Scream had the crowd on their feet and well…screaming. With a fairly unadorned dark stage, absolutely packed with musicians, this is a band that knows it doesn't need any bells and whistles to please its audience. Effortlessly switching from a funky dance beat to a more bluesy sound (think the Stones) and back again, these Glasgow rockers cannot fail to make an impression. By the time they got around to playing their big hit, the crowd was practically in a frenzy of wild sweaty joyful movement. There is a reason why true music fans consider Primal Scream such legends and this was it.

Bobby Gillespie and co are now a frequenter of the British music festivals each summer mainly due to the devoted nature of their UK fanbase. No matter if you have seen Primal Scream once or hundreds of times, you are assured to enjoy yourself due to the passionate way in which the band conducts their show.
Although Bobby may seem dazed and confused as he stumbles around stage during extensive instrumentals, he still knows how to work the crowd and the reaction that he can achieve as he teases the cheering masses during the introduction to 'Loaded' and 'Higher Than The Sun'. There is no denying 'Screamadelica' remains their most irreverent album and the band does not shy away from its material yet they also have chance to showcase new tracks from 'More Light' proving they still have a great understanding of contemporary rock. 'Rocks' closes the main set tonight with the usual anthemic singalong so the crowd knows the encore will include their other iconic track 'Movin' On Up'. A little slice of alt-rock history, Primal Scream never fail to entertain.
A buzzing 02 academy liverpool was the epicenter for a stunning performance from primal scream, from the opening guitar rifts of MOVIN ON UP to the finale of ROCKS the intensity and energy never waivered, all the classics were in there from the 90s inspired COME TOGETHER to there last single 100 PERCENT OR NOTHING bobby gillespie,s enthusiasm never faltered as he fed off the crowds appreciation.SWASTIKA EYES produced the usual burst of energy from the audience followed through with the likes of DOLLS,JAILBIRD and COUNTRY GIRL blew the roof off the place, all in all a fantastic night from a fantastic band and it was a privelage to be there long may they continue, see you next time bobby!!!!!
The Scream back on form! Amazing gig!
New album works better live than studio versions, opening with Movin' On Up was bold and genius.
Ending with Come Together was blinding. Best ever Swastika Eyes I've ever seen them do.
Even enjoyed seeing them at The Palladium which I had reservations about. Great vibe and sounds a great room.
Awesome show! .... great set list with a mix of old and new. Bobby worked the crowd and was Jagger-esque in his red suit. Simone took heed of Paul Simomon's advice and rocked the stage with lower heels.... and looked sublime. 'Come Together' just finished the gig perfectly. 10/10
That was such an awesome show last night. Bobby Gillespie is one of the greatest frontmen of all time and drove the whole show. I was dancing all night to songs such as "Swastika Eyes", "Loaded" and "Country Girl". I'd go see this band any day of the week
