Home of the ancient pyramids, pharaohs, and the legendary Nile, Egypt needs no introduction

For a small group tour of Egypt home of the great pyramid of giza , pharaoh and ancient temples, and the legendary river Nile, Egypt needs no introduction. Its fame is richly deserved: where else can you visit monuments as iconic as the Great Giza Pyramids , the Sphinx, and the 3000-year-old Abu Simbel? But it’s not all ancient history and a museum on guided small group tours with Odyssey Traveller. Cairo – then known as Al Qahira – was the capital of a medieval Islamic empire, with the soaring minarets and mosques to prove it, while Egypt‘s rich Coptic Christian tradition is manifest in the churches of Old Cairosuch as St Catherine’s monastery. Things do change, with a new capital city being built and from 2021 we will be visiting the new museum in Cairo with its first class collection of Egyptian antiquities.

Touring Egypt

Things to Know

Getting Around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains, ferries and planes. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Odyssey’s Egypt tour requires two short internal flights – one from Cairo to Luxor and another from Aswan to Cairo.

Accommodation

In major cities in Egypt, Odyssey stays in centrally located 4 -5 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which we spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour Guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, environmnet & Weather

Egypt is situated at the meeting place of North Africa and Southwest Asia. It extends into Asia by virtue of holding the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt is bordered by Israel and the Gaza Strip to the north-east, by Sudan to the south and by Libya to the west. The Mediterranean and Red Seas (to the north and east respectively) bound the nation. It is geographically dominated both by the Nile River and its fertile well-watered valley, and by the Eastern and Western deserts. It is predominantly desert, and only 3.5% of the total land area is permanently settled. Almost 99% of the population live along the valleys and delta of the Nile. The climate is variable, but generally defined by hot and dry summers, and moderate winters. There is almost no rain in the Nile valley, but the North coast receives some of the country’s heaviest rains.

World Heritage sites

Egypt contains seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can view the official list of the sites here (http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/EG). While every site has something of value, here are a few highlights:

The early Christian holy city of Abu Mena

Ancient Thebes, the pinnacle of Egyptian civilisation, including the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens

The Pyramid Fields in Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, once considered one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World

Festivals & events

Egypt celebrates an amazing variety of religious, secular and ancient cultural festivals.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims refrain from eating and drinking during daylight hours. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a fast-breaking festival known as Eid-al-Fitr. The festival follows the lunar calendar so is on a different date each year.

Leylet en Nuktah is the ancient Egyptian celebration of the rise of the Nile River. On June 17 each year, modern Egyptians picnic and camp along the shores of the river or spend the night with family and friends.

Most Egyptians, regardless of religion, join in the festivities of Coptic Christmas on January 7. In the week prior, homes and businesses are decked out in colourful lights and decorations.

Sham al-Naseem, or ‘sniffing the breeze’, is an ancient holiday celebrating the coming of spring on March 21.

Eating & Drinking

Egyptian food reflects its place at the crossroads of three continents, often combining aspects of Lebanese, Greek, Syrian, French and Turkish cooking. There are also regional differences: northern cities like Alexandria are more Mediterranean in style, while food can be much spicier in the south.

Egyptian staples are bread (usually pita), fuul (fava beans) and taamiya (deep-fried green bean patties). Many more flavoursome local delights can be enjoyed in the cafés, street stalls and restaurants of Egyptian cities and towns.

As a mostly Muslim country, most Egyptians give alcohol a wide berth. Alcohol cannot be sold during Ramadan. Egyptians instead usually prefer tea, Turkish coffee or a refreshing scented beverage known as Karkaday.

Health & Safety

Prior to making the decision to travel you should check, smarttraveller.gov or the equivalent. It’s always best to check the latest details before setting out on a trip. Certain parts of Egypt should be avoided for the time being, particularly the border with Libya. There are risks associated with certain areas, and it is important to take these into consideration when planning your trip. But countries like Egypt rely heavily on tourism, and refusing travel can be detrimental to a struggling economy. Stay apprised of government recommendations for Egypt in order to be best prepared for your trip.

Typically you should only consume bottled water and avoid foods such as salads that have been prepared with local water.

Electrical supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. Plugs in Egypt are type C and F, so make sure to pick up the right adaptor before your trip.

Egypt tour: escorted small group history & cultural tour of Egypt

A tour beyond expectation. Egypt has so much to offer from the past and Odyssey did a fantastic job.

I did this tour last year and can thoroughly recommend it. The security was very tight, both during the travel and in the hotels. The Egyptologist we had with us was an expert on the history and culture of the country. We travelled widely and saw so much of the treasures and wonders that are exclusive to Egypt.

Carol Fraser

Mal was a wonderful Program leader. She would be the best tour leader we have ever experienced. Her obvious experience and her calm demeanor contributed greatly to the cohesiveness of our group which, in turn, contributed to our enjoyment.

This was a fascinating program and the support was outstanding

Our Egyptologist, Mohammed, was excellent. Not only was he a very experienced tour guide and very knowledgeable, he was very organised and friendly and we always felt secure with him. He contributed greatly to our enjoyment of the trip.

This tour was excellent, encompassing not only historical Egypt but also introducing us to modern Egypt. The varied travel by bus, small cruise ship and air, contributed to our interest and enjoyment. The extremely high quality of our tour leader, the Egyptologist and the local guide enhanced our knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of this tour.

What time zone is Egypt located in?

Egypt has a single time zone, Egypt Standard Time, which is exactly the same as Eastern European Time. That is Egypt is two hours ahead of GMT.

Is tipping customary in Egypt?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you make sure you tip an appropriate amount for services, as is the case throughout much of Egypt.

Generally tipping around 10% is good etiquette at a restaurant in Egypt. However, you will more than likely see a “service charge” on your bill. This service charge goes to the restaurant, not the waiter so be sure to tip the waiter or waitress in addition.

What is internet access like?

Internet access is quite good in Egypt, with even the smallest villages boasting at least basic internet access. In Cairo, most cafes and fast food outlets provide free wireless internet. A word of caution: always read the fine print before browsing on a free wifi network.

Can I use my mobile in Egypt?

If you have a 3G or higher phone with global roaming capability, your phone will work in Egypt, as long as you are in an area with phone service. You will be charged international roaming rates.

Can I drink the water in Egypt?

Only drink bottled water. If the water doesn’t taste right, even if it was unsealed in front of you, send it back and get another.

Responsible Travel Tips for Egypt

  • Be considerate of Egypt’s customs, traditions, religion and culture. Culturally Egypt can be vastly different from many Western countries.
  • If sightseeing in rural areas, remember to be respectful of residents and locals. As well as being tourist attractions, these are peoples’ homes!
  • Support local artisans and vendors, when appropriate.
  • Monitor travel warnings and check the latest details before setting out on a trip.
  • Carry a card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums & galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of pounds in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

Visit Jordan as Part of our Tour Add-ons

While on our Egyptian tours for seniors, it is worth extending your trip to include a tour of Middle Eastern Jordan.

Jordan is a fairy-tale desert land where modernity intertwines with the tradition of the Orient. A place where you can easily find both Turkish kebab and Arabic harissa. Considered the most European of the Arab countries, it is a very friendly place for tourists to visit, especially on our Egypt tours for seniors. Majestic Petra, the queen of the desert, is centuries old and enchanted in stone, which, depending on the time of day, shines with all shades of pink, red and purple. It's hard to believe that these wonders were hidden until 1812! In the desert of Wadi-Rum you can admire the most beautiful desert landscapes in the world and get to see rocky mountains in the color of ocher, with bizarre shapes and angles. Madaba fascinates you with its mosaics and the views from Mount Nebo to the Promised Land are delightful. The capital of Jordan, Amman, is also noteworthy, and this is where our Jordan 5-day add-on on our Egypt tours for seniors begins and ends. In Amman, the Roman theater, the citadel with a view of the old city, as well as the Umayyad palace, the temple of Hercules and the Abbasid tower deserve attention. The Dead Sea is a must-visit place in Jordan on our travel tours for seniors as it is a spa for both body and soul. Bathing in the Dead Sea is an amazing experience, even people who can't swim will float on the surface of the water.

A trip to Jordan is organized after each of our guided tours of Egypt. The Jordan 5-day add-on can be purchased when registering for any of our Egypt tours for seniors. A five-day trip to Jordan costs $2885 per person for a double room, and the deposit is $500 per person during the booking process of your Egypt tours for seniors. Full payment is then due 90 days before the tour. A single supplement costs $625 if you would prefer to not share your room.

The benefits of our Jordan 5-day add-on on our Egypt tours for seniors are: experiencing a different culture, visiting new places as well as having a more diverse vacation. Our Egypt and Jordan Tours offer older travelers a unique opportunity to explore two fascinating countries in just one trip.

Vaccination and Other Health Concerns

Egypt does not require any vaccinations from seniors coming on vacation. However, it is important to properly prepare yourself for the travel tours for seniors. Take lightweight clothes made from natural materials in bright colors, a hat with a large brim, sunglasses, and comfortable, but not new shoes. A face sun cream with a high filter, for example, SPF 50 will be useful. If you take medications regularly, remember to take them with you, but only in the quantity that will be needed during the guided tour of Egypt. If you take prescription medication, bring along a copy of your prescription with you when entering Egypt. Also, remember to take medical accessories if you use them on a daily basis.

Before going to Egypt, and continuing throughout your stay, consume products rich in natural probiotics such as kefir, sour milk, buttermilk, yogurt, acidophilic milk, sauerkraut, and pickled cucumbers. You can also choose products in the form of capsules or powder for the preparation of suspension, and drops. You can buy these in local pharmacies. These products increase the positive intestinal microflora. Such behavior can be effective prevention of the so-called "travelers' diarrhea". During the Egyptian tours for seniors, you should wash your hands often and drink a lot of bottled water at room temperature. Avoid cold ice drinks as these could upset your stomach. The temperature in air-conditioned hotel rooms and in the cabin on the ship should be set between 21 ° C to 25 ° C. This will ensure that the rooms are comfortable and you will not catch a cold.

By choosing our Egypt tours for seniors, you can't forget about one more, extremely important element - appropriate travel insurance. This will help you quickly deal with the consequences of any unpleasant, unexpected events such as travel luggage loss, illness, or an accident. In this situation, a good insurance policy may prove to be an invaluable help on the Egypt tours for seniors.

If you use the above Egypt travel tips for the perfect vacation, your Egypt tours for seniors will be satisfying and you will remember the best Egypt private tours for many years to come.

Is egypt suitable for elderly.

Yes, Egypt can be a suitable destination for elderly travelers, provided certain considerations are considered. Egypt offers a rich cultural and historical experience that seniors can enjoy, but there are some factors to remember.

  • Accessibility:  Ensure that the accommodations and tourist sites you plan to visit are accessible for seniors with mobility issues. Many popular tourist sites like the pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, and some temples may have uneven terrain and require a fair amount of walking or navigating stairs. It’s essential to research and plan accordingly.
  • Healthcare:  Check the availability of healthcare facilities and insurance coverage. While Egypt has modern medical facilities in major cities, it’s a good idea for senior travelers to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.
  • Weather:  Be mindful of the weather, especially if you’re traveling during the hot summer months. Egypt can have scorching temperatures, which may not be comfortable for elderly travelers. Consider traveling during the cooler months (October to April) for a more pleasant experience.
  • Pace of Travel:  Plan a relaxed itinerary that allows for plenty of breaks and rest. Avoid rushing from one attraction to another, as this can be tiring for seniors. It’s essential to strike a balance between exploration and relaxation.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Egypt As Senior?

The weather is milder during this period, and daytime temperatures are more comfortable for outdoor activities. The peak of the tourist season in Egypt also falls within these months, so you can enjoy the attractions with smaller crowds. Additionally, it’s advisable to check the dates of major holidays and festivals, as they can affect crowds and availability of accommodations.

Tipping or Baksheesh in Egypt

Tipping, or baksheesh, is a common practice in Egypt and is considered a way to show appreciation for good service. It’s important to note that while tipping is not mandatory, it is expected in many situations, and it’s a good idea to carry small bills and change for this purpose.

Here are some standard tipping practices in Egypt:

  • Tour guides: Tipping your tour guide at the end of your tour is customary. The amount will depend on the length of the tour and the level of service provided, but a good rule of thumb is around 10-20% of the total cost of the tour.
  • Hotel staff: Tipping hotel staff, such as bellhops and housekeeping, is familiar. A small tip of 10-20 Egyptian pounds per day is appropriate.
  • Drivers: If you hire a driver, it’s customary to tip them at the end of your trip. The amount will depend on the length of the journey and the level of service provided, but a good rule of thumb is around 50-100 Egyptian pounds per day.
  • Restaurants: It’s common to leave a tip of around 10-15% of the total bill at restaurants. Some restaurants may include a service charge on the bill, so check before tipping.

In summary, tipping or baksheesh is a common practice in Egypt, and it’s important to have small bills and changes on hand. The amount to tip will depend on the service provided. What to bring with you on a trip to Egypt?

When planning a trip to Egypt, it’s important to pack the right items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some things to consider bringing with you:

Sunscreen: Egypt is a desert country, and the sun can be intense, so it’s important to pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin.

Comfortable walking shoes: Many of Egypt’s top attractions involve a lot of walking, so make sure you bring comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain.

Lightweight clothing: Egypt can be hot, so pack light clothing from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Packing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees is also a good idea, particularly if you plan to visit religious sites.

Scarf or shawl: Women visiting Egypt may want to bring a scarf or shawl to cover their heads when entering mosques or other religious sites.

Water bottle: Staying hydrated is important in Egypt’s hot climate, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day.

Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be a problem in some regions of Egypt, particularly during the summer, so pack insect repellent to keep them at bay.

Camera: Egypt is a country full of fantastic photo opportunities, so bring a camera to capture all the incredible sights.

Power adapter: Egypt uses European-style power sockets, so if you’re coming from outside Europe, you’ll need to bring a power adapter to charge your electronic devices.

Packaging these essential items will prepare you for a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Egypt.

Advices for women while traveling to Egypt

Traveling as a woman in Egypt can be a rewarding and exciting experience, but it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and comfort. Here are some tips for women traveling to Egypt:

Dress conservatively: Egypt is a Muslim country, and it’s important to respect local customs and dress conservatively. It’s a good idea to cover your shoulders and knees when in public places, especially when visiting mosques or other religious sites.

Avoid walking alone at night: It’s best to avoid walking alone at night, especially in quiet or poorly-lit areas. Instead, take a taxi or use a ride-hailing app to get around.

Use a guide or tour group: Using a guide or tour group can be a good idea, especially if you’re traveling alone. This can help you navigate local customs and culture, and can provide an extra layer of safety.

Be cautious with alcohol: Drinking alcohol in public is prohibited in Egypt, and it’s important to be cautious with alcohol consumption. Stick to drinking in licensed bars and restaurants, and avoid getting drunk in public.

Be aware of your surroundings: It’s always important to be aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling in a new place. Be cautious of pickpockets, scams, and other potential dangers, and trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Research local customs and culture: Researching local customs and culture can help you better understand the country and avoid inadvertently offending locals. For example, it’s important to remove your shoes when entering a mosque, and to avoid physical contact with people of the opposite sex in public.

By following these tips and being aware of local customs and culture, women can have a safe and enjoyable experience traveling in Egypt.

Egypt Tours for Seniors

Embarking on a Nile River cruise is a delightful way for seniors to experience the wonders of Egypt while enjoying comfort and relaxation. These cruises offer a unique blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty, making them an ideal choice for older travelers. Here are some features that make Nile River cruises particularly appealing to seniors:

1- Comfortable Accommodations: Nile River cruise ships often provide comfortable and well-appointed cabins, ensuring that seniors have a cozy retreat after a day of exploration. Many vessels are designed to comfort older passengers, offering spacious cabins, air conditioning, and accessible facilities.

2- Leisurely Pace of Travel: One of the key advantages of a Nile River cruise for seniors is the leisurely pace of travel. Cruises typically cover shorter distances daily, allowing passengers to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed. 3- Onboard Amenities and Entertainment: Nile cruise ships often feature onboard amenities to cater to the needs of seniors. Selecting Accommodations for Senior Comfort

Egypt Tours for Seniors

Selecting accommodations for senior comfort is a crucial aspect of planning a trip, be it a short getaway or an extended vacation. When choosing where to stay, it’s essential to prioritize accessibility features, such as ramps, elevators, and rooms equipped with grab bars. Accessible bathrooms, complete with roll-in showers or shower seats, can significantly enhance comfort for seniors with mobility challenges.

Consider the location’s proximity to attractions, restaurants, and medical facilities to minimize travel and walking distances. Look for accommodations with comfortable bedding and seating to ensure a restful stay. Adequate lighting in the room, including bedside lamps and reading lights, is crucial for visibility and safety.

A quiet environment is also important, so choose rooms away from elevators and high-traffic areas to promote relaxation. Onsite amenities like in-room dining options, concierge services, and accessible common areas can provide a more comfortable experience. Prioritize accommodations with robust safety measures, including secure entrances, well-lit pathways, and visible emergency information.

Take advantage of senior discounts or special packages offered by many accommodations to make the trip more budget-friendly. Additionally, check for flexible cancellation policies, providing peace of mind in case of unexpected changes or health-related issues.

Before finalizing reservations, read reviews from other travelers, particularly those within a similar age group, to gather valuable insights into the experiences of seniors at specific accommodations. By considering these factors, senior travelers can ensure that their chosen accommodations contribute positively to the overall comfort and enjoyment of their journey.

Tips for Egypt Tours for Seniors 2024

Egypt Tours for Seniors

For a fulfilling senior vacation in Egypt in 2024, prioritize health precautions by consulting your healthcare provider for vaccinations and carrying the necessary medications. Ensure comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies and document validity. Choose accommodations with senior-friendly amenities, and consider guided tours for attractions like the Pyramids of Giza.

Use reliable transportation options and be culturally sensitive, dressing modestly and respecting local customs. Explore Egyptian cuisine cautiously, favoring established restaurants. Learn basic Arabic phrases and pack comfortable clothing, hats, and sunglasses for the warm climate. Familiarize yourself with the local currency and stay informed about weather conditions and travel advisories. Allow downtime in your schedule and connect with locals to enrich your experience. These tips make your senior vacation in Egypt enjoyable and memorable.

Eating and Drinking In Egypt for Senior Travelers in Egypt

Egypt Tours for Seniors

When it comes to eating and drinking in Egypt as a senior traveler, there are several considerations to ensure a safe and enjoyable culinary experience. First and foremost, be cautious with street food and opt for well-established restaurants to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses. Choose cooked foods served hot, and avoid raw or undercooked items, including salads that may have been washed in local water.

Staying hydrated is essential, especially in the warm climate, but being mindful of the water source. Stick to bottled or purified water to prevent waterborne diseases. Additionally, avoid ice in your drinks if its source is uncertain.

Egyptian cuisine is diverse and flavorful, offering a variety of dishes. However, if you have dietary restrictions or specific preferences, communicate them clearly when ordering. Many restaurants in tourist areas have English menus, making it easier to navigate the choices.

To fully experience local flavors, try popular Egyptian dishes such as koshari (a mix of rice, lentils, and pasta topped with spicy tomato sauce), falafel, and kebabs. Fruits like dates and figs are also delicious and widely available.

While enjoying tea or coffee with locals is common, be aware that traditional Egyptian coffee can be strong. If you prefer a milder option, you can opt for tea, which is typically served with sugar and sometimes mint.

Practicing moderation, staying hydrated, and being mindful of food safety will contribute to a positive dining experience during your senior travels in Egypt. Don’t hesitate to ask locals or your accommodation staff for recommendations to discover hidden culinary gems and ensure a delightful exploration of Egyptian cuisine.

Egypt Tours for Seniors: Top Travel Tips, Sights & Tours

Egypt is famous for tourists of all ages because it has much history, culture, and beauty. Egypt has things to do for people of all ages and interests. The good news is that there are a lot of Egypt tours for seniors that are made with their needs and interests in mind.

One of the best things about Egypt tours for seniors is that they are very comfortable and easy to use. These tours usually stay in comfortable hotels and resorts that are easy to get to and move around. Many times also include transportation in air-conditioned buses or private cars, making it easy for seniors to get around and see the sights without having to worry about getting lost in an unfamiliar place.

trip to egypt deals

Of course, the best thing about Egypt tours for seniors is the chance to learn about the country’s rich history and culture. There are many unique places to visit, like the famous pyramids of Giza and the temples of Luxor and Karnak . Through guided tours and lectures, many tours also allow you to learn about Egypt’s rich history and culture, which helps you understand and appreciate this amazing place more.

The safety of seniors is another essential thing to consider, and Egypt tours for seniors are made with this in mind. Tour operators ensure that all senior activities and trips are safe and comfortable, with many breaks and chances to rest, relax, and re-energize. Many tours also offer the help of trained medical professionals, giving seniors and their families peace of mind.

Can Senior Travelers Enjoy Tours in Egypt?

Egypt Tours for Seniors

This is a tricky question because there are so many different factors. The health and mobility of older people vary a lot, and some may have arthritis, while others are still in great shape and can go to the gym. As we can see, health and happiness, in general, are more important than age. A trip to Egypt should be easy and stress-free for the average elderly traveler. Even if your health isn’t what it used to be, you can still have the vacation of a lifetime if you choose your Egypt vacation package wisely.

Senior Travelers in Egypt – Activities and Excursions

Egypt Tours for Seniors

Most Egypt vacation packages focus on sightseeing, which can require a lot of walking. Still, if you book your tour with a reputable company, you’ll be driven from one attraction to the next, and it’s up to you how much you want to see at each one. For example, you might not want to go inside pyramids if you have trouble moving around. However, you could still look at them from the outside, like millions of other people do.

Even though it might seem strange, most older travelers to Egypt can have as much fun in the Sahara desert as younger travelers if they choose a tour package with a good schedule. Many desert adventure tours don’t require much physical work, so you would only have to deal with the heat. Still, even this is mostly avoided because all transfers occur in vehicles with air conditioning.

Many older people choose Nile cruise vacations because they usually take them to the best places in Cairo , from Luxor to Aswan . During the cruise, passengers can also choose not to go on any or all tours. When the ship docks for tours on land, many people stay on the ship instead of going on the terms.

Seniors could also book a tour that includes both the Nile and Lake Nasser , like a cruise package that provides both. Again, when people travel more, they spend less time walking and have more time to rest.

Tips for Senior Vacation In Egypt

Egypt Tours for Seniors

Overall, Egypt tours for seniors are an excellent way for older people to visit one of the most exciting places in the world in comfort, safety, and style. Whether you want to learn about ancient history and culture or relax and enjoy the scenery, an Egypt tour will meet your needs and exceed your expectations. Then why wait? Start planning your dream trip to Egypt today, and prepare for the journey of a lifetime.

1- Choose a Tour That Meets Your Needs

When choosing Egypt Luxury tours, picking a package that fits your needs and interests is essential. There are many different kinds of Egypt Classic packages , from luxury tours to tours on a budget . There are also Egypt tours that focus on culture and Egypt tours that focus on adventure. You should choose an Egypt tour that fits your age and physical abilities, the places you want to see, and the things you want to do.

2-Pack Smart

If you want to go on a cultural tour of Egypt, you should pack well. To enjoy your Egypt adventure tours and avoid sunburn, you should wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are good for walking. Sunscreen and a hat or scarf are also good ideas. You should also bring medicines, a first-aid kit, a water bottle, and a camera to take pictures of your trip. Check out our Sharm El Sheikh day trips if you like to try new things. You can do things like snorkeling in Ras Mohammed and camping in the Sinai mountains.

3- Keep Hydrated

Egypt is hot and dry, so staying hydrated during your Egypt budget tours is essential. Please drink a lot of water. On your trip, you should also bring a bottle of water.

4- Don’t Rush

Egypt has much history and culture; seeing everything in just a few days or hours can be challenging. Take your time and enjoy new things, like Luxor day tours, instead of trying to get through everything as quickly as possible. Stop when necessary and go at your own pace during the tour day.

If you are interested in history and want to learn about ancient Egypt, go on Aswan day tours. The temples and Egypt Nile cruise will amaze you.

5- Get a tour guide for your trip to Egypt

A tour guide can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your trip to Egypt. A tour guide will help you get the most out of your Egypt deluxe tours by telling you interesting facts about Egypt’s history and culture and the places you will visit. He can also help you feel safe during your trips to Egypt.

https://egypttimetravel.com/egypt-vacation-packages/

6- Be Respectful

When you go to Egypt, respecting the culture there is essential. When going into religious places like Egyptian mosques, it is best to dress modestly and cover your head. Your tour guide will be able to tell you more about what to do in different situations. We’ll always be there for you, so you’ll never be alone.

Health Concerns

Egypt Tours for Seniors

There are some health issues that all people who visit the country should know about. For example, travelers from all over the world are told to get certain vaccinations. Some visitors from Africa and South America must show proof that they have been vaccinated against Yellow Fever when they arrive in the country. If something goes wrong, seniors who go to Egypt should also bring enough “backup” prescription drugs.

Vaccinations

Egypt suggests that everyone who wants to go there get vaccinated against polio and typhoid. All travelers should also be aware of the West Nile Virus and avoid swimming in lakes, rivers, and streams because of parasites and bacteria that live there. As is often the case, older travelers in Egypt can avoid some of the most common complaints or health problems by using a little common sense.

Eating and Drinking

Egypt Tours for Seniors

When in the country, you should only drink water in a bottle. Again, you should never, ever drink water from the tap. Eating at clean restaurants or snack bars in the market is the best way to avoid stomach problems. If you want to eat at a local restaurant that serves food in an Egyptian style, you should go to one that is busy.

In the hot weather of Egypt, it’s also a good idea to avoid drinking alcohol since alcohol can make you lose water. Many tourists drink cold hibiscus tea (karkade), a popular drink in Egypt. Please keep in mind, though, that it can lower blood pressure if you eat a lot of it, which could be dangerous for people who already have problems with their blood pressure.

Seniors who want to travel to Egypt won’t have to worry about their health if they book a package with a trained and highly experienced personal guide. These people have been carefully chosen based on their knowledge and skill, and they can easily keep you safe.

How important it is for tours to have a local guide

Seniors who want to travel around Egypt on their own should hire a licensed local guide. Most of these guides are trained by the government. This is a great way to avoid having trouble getting to the most popular places. It can also make things easier in restaurants and markets, improving the experience. Again, if you don’t want to book a vacation package that includes a personal guide, you’ll find that most hotels can usually help their guests find a licensed guide.

Money Exchange and Currency Tips

Lastly, travelers should get some of their money changed into Egyptian currency to tip and buy food and goods in the markets. Aside from that, most travelers will find that their credit cards or traveler’s checks (in American dollars, euros, or English pounds) will be accepted almost everywhere in any major city.

Can Senior Travelers Enjoy Tours in Egypt?

Senior Travelers In Egypt

Generally speaking, a person’s age is virtually irrelevant when traveling in this ancient Land of the Pharaohs. Nonetheless, there are a few exceptions.

Read on to find out how senior travelers in Egypt can avoid encountering unpleasant experiences…

Egypt remains one of the world’s top tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors each year, and a surprisingly large percentage of them are senior citizens. This begs the question: do senior travelers in Egypt encounter more difficulties than younger travelers? In some regard, this is somewhat of a difficult question to answer because there are so many variables.

Older people vary tremendously in terms of health and mobility; some might suffer from ailments such as arthritis, while others are still gym fit. As we can see, overall health and wellbeing is more relevant than age. For the average elderly traveler, our Egypt tours for seniors should be a smooth and hassle free experience, and even those who are no longer enjoying perfect health can have a holiday of a lifetime if they choose their Egypt vacation packages wisely.

Senior Travelers in Egypt – Activities and Excursions

Most Egypt package vacations are centered on sightseeing which can involve a good deal of walking, but if your tour is booked through a reputable tour operator , you will be driven from one attraction to the next, and to what extent you wish to explore those attractions is up to you. For example, if you have mobility issues, then it might not be a good idea for you to venture into any pyramids, but you could still explore them from the outside just as millions of other people do.

As surprising as it might seem, most senior travelers in Egypt can also enjoy Sahara desert adventures just as much as younger travelers, providing they choose a tour package with a suitable itinerary. Many desert adventure tours involve very little physical exertion, so it would only be the heat to contend with, but even that is largely avoided because all transfers take place in air-conditioned vehicles.

Many elderly travelers tend to choose Nile cruise holidays since these typically include visits to most of the best attractions in Cairo ; Luxor , Aswan and everything in between. Additionally, during the cruise, passengers have the option of declining any or all tours along the route. When the ship docks for onshore excursions, many simply opt out of the tour and they remain on the ship instead.

Another good option for senior travelers would be to book a combination Egypt tour for seniors such as Nile and Lake Nasser cruise packages or an Egypt and Jordan tour . Here again, more traveling means less time walking, and it also affords travelers with more time to rest.

Health Concerns

There are certain health concerns that all visitors to the country should be aware. For example, some immunizations are suggested for travelers regardless of where they come from, and some African and South American guests are actually required to present proof of Yellow Fever immunization when they arrive in the country. Senior travelers in Egypt should also take enough “back up” prescription medications in case of any mishaps.

Vaccinations

Currently Egypt recommends that everyone entering the country have both polio and typhoid vaccinations. All travelers should also be aware of West Nile Virus, and avoid swimming in the fresh water at lakes, rivers or streams due to certain native parasites and bacteria. As is often the case, a small measure of common sense will go a long way in protecting senior travelers in Egypt from some of the most common complaints or health issues.

Eating and Drinking

It goes without saying that one should only drink bottled water during your stay in the country. Again, under no circumstance should you drink tap water. Eating at sanitary restaurants or snack bars in the markets is the best way for you to avoid stomach problems. If you want to eat at local Egyptian style restaurants then it is best to eat at ones which have many customers. Remember, they have many customers for a reason.

Forgoing alcoholic beverages in the heat of the Egyptian climate is also a good idea since alcohol can contribute to the onset of dehydration. Many visitors tend to enjoy cold Hibiscus tea (karkade) which is a very popular beverage among Egyptians. Do note however that consuming large amounts of it can lower blood pressure which in turn could be problematic for people with blood pressure problems.

Nearly all potential health problems for seniors traveling in Egypt can be eliminated entirely simply by making sure they book a package vacation that includes a trained and highly experience personal guide. These individuals are carefully selected based on their knowledge and their competence, and they can effortlessly keep you out of harm’s way.

The Importance of a Local Guide for Tours

It is highly recommended that” independent” senior travelers in Egypt hire the services of a licensed local guide, most of whom are trained by the government. This is a good way to avoid difficulties in reaching the most popular sights. It can also make life easier at restaurants and in the markets, which in turn can lead to a much richer overall experience. Again, if you don’t intend booking a package vacation that includes a personal guide, you will find that most hotels are usually able to help their guests with arranging a licensed guide.

Money Exchange and Currency Tips

Finally, travelers are encouraged to exchange some funds into the local Egyptian currency to use for tipping and for purchasing food and merchandise in the markets. Other than that, most travelers will find that their credit cards or travelers checks (American dollars, Euro and English pounds) will be accepted almost everywhere else in any and all major cities.

Israel, Jordan and Egypt 10 days

I did the Israel/Jordan (Petra)/Egypt tour. Israel was amazing! Yousef,Lauren and Tomer were the best guides ever. Amazing guys with lots of knowledge and humor! The hotel in Tel Aviv could've been a lot better. Two people could not cross path because it was too narrow. Not to mention that a restaurant operates right outside your room, and the parties and music lasted until midnight. The room didn't get done at all twice, and had to complain. The shower door didn't completely shut, and the water leaked into the bathroom. What a nightmare of hotel. In Egypt my camera lens was confiscated. This is a third-world country that wants to cover the sun with one finger. They said that the lens had too much range, to which I replied that my cellphone camera had even larger range. Total silence. They wanted me to pay a fee of $300 for keeping the lens and claiming it on my way out, but everything just sounded weird and fishy. I ended up smashing the glass on the lens, and throwing it in the trash. I thought I'd get arrested for doing this, but I just walked out. The tour in Egypt was good, the guide (Ahmed) was very nice and friendly. The only downside is that it was just my wife and me, not in a larger group, so at the end of the tour we had to tip the guide and the driver. It came out to $500. Ouch! These guys expect a tip, not a tap on the shoulder. This includes the guides and drivers in every country you visit, so be prepared to bring extra money.

Israel and Egypt 10 days

I really liked the tour of Egypt and Israel. Although our trip lasted only 10 days, I managed to get enough impressions from it. Jerusalem is a stunning ancient city with a history that affects the universe. I was very impressed with its architecture and local attractions. During the tour we visited many religious institutions and places of worship. The guide was very inspired to tell us about each of them. I also enjoyed my stay at the hotel. There were good living conditions: room service, inexpensive bar, delicious food and Wi-Fi. The trip was very comfortable, interesting and exciting. The panoramas of the places we've been are worth the money I paid to see them alive.

Israel, Jordan, and Egypt Luxury 13 days with Nile Cruise

The tour could have been much more successful if the communication was ahead of time, faster, and more detailed. Tourradar has a tel # which is useless as they do not have the answer to the questions. The only way of communication is through messages that take for ever to answer, sometimes overnight. The local representatives at Jordan, Mr Zid and at Mr Mohamed were excellent! as well as the daily tourist guides in Israel. However, we were stressed about the following issues: 1. Tourradar did not gave us the itinerary or the name of the hotels until the last minute and when it was urgently requested out of desperation of not knowing where we were going to stay. I had to keep sending messages asking for the information that it was needed. 2 Tourradar Failed to let us know that we had to paid $530.00 at the Jordan border for visas and taxes, so it was very confusing having to come up with that amount of money that they wanted in cash. 3 When we were leaving Jordan the immigration officers who did not speak enough English kept asking for "taxes" ($530.00) we paid at the border in Jordan the day before. I had to call Mr Zid and he was able to explain them that we already paid and that we only spent one day in Jordan even though we have the receipts. 4 When we arrived to Egypt, we pass immigration, and we found ourselves in the middle of no where with no name for the tourist guide or the hotel name and address where we were going. When finally a driver show up (after over an hour of stress and uncertainty) asking for "2 Americans" he did not have our names nor the name of the hotel where we will stay. In addition, he did not speak English. We were lucky that Mr Zid from Jordan helped us talk to Mr Mohamed in Egypt to get the name of the Hotel. 5 For the future, Americans, need more information in writing before the tour not while it is happening as we need to plan and we need to know where we are going to stay. On the other hand, the hotel choice were good choices and the local tour guides did the extra mile with their personal attention for example: Mr Zid met us at the border and spoke to the immigration people and he help us find our hotel in Egypt or when Mr Mohamed met us and help us find a luggage with a great price as well as being understanding when we ask for a different tourist guide in Cairo. The transportation was also private and comfortable.

Israel was a mess. The hotels were 1-2 stars , old, breakfast was soars. Eilat transfer was a mess. Tours in Israel involved 2-4 hours wait while being dropped off from hotel, they had to put us in taxis after waiting 2 hours because of lack of coordination and too many tourists per 1 guide or bus . Egypt - good hotels, good breakfast, excellent guides. We were 4 in a group. We would definitely go back to Egypt but no to Israel.

Middle East latest: Rockets fired towards US military base in Syria

At least five rockets have been launched from the Iraqi town of Zummar towards a US military base in northeastern Syria, security sources tell Reuters. The attack against American forces is the first since February, when Iranian-backed groups in Iraq stopped targeting US troops.

Mental illness could manifest among Palestinians in Gaza years from now, a UN expert has warned.

Tlaleng Mofokeng, UN special rapporteur on the right to health, warned it is "really important" to start considering the conflict's impact on the long-term wellbeing of Palestinians in Gaza.

"Of course, we see the physical injury, and because it's physical, one can appreciate the severity of it," she said.

"But acute mental distress that will then turn into anxiety and other kinds of mental illnesses later on in life is really, really important to start thinking intentionally about."

Ms Mofokeng said she is concerned about the risk of water and airborne diseases, and the lack of medical supplies, reproductive and mental health services in the territory.

"The health system in Gaza has been completely obliterated, and the right to health has been decimated at every level," she added.

"The conditions are incompatible with the realisation of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health."

The Israeli assault has destroyed hospitals across the enclave and killed and injured health workers, with Israel accusing Hamas of regularly using hospitals and other medical facilities for military purposes.

In February, UNICEF estimated 17,000 children in Gaza have been unaccompanied or separated from families during the conflict, and that nearly all children are thought to need mental health support.

Israeli troops have launched a surprise raid in the eastern part of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, Reuters is reporting.

Israel pulled its troops out of southern Gaza earlier this month, but their apparent return has caused residents to flee once more, the news agency added.

"They were too frightened," 42-year-old Ahmed Rezik said from a school where he is sheltering in the western part of Khan Younis.

"This morning many families who had left here in the past two weeks to go back home to Abassan came back," he told Reuters via a messaging app.

"They said tanks pushed in the eastern area of the town under heavy fire, and they had to run for their lives."

Meanwhile, Palestinian authorities said more bodies had been recovered from mass graves on the site of the city's main hospital, abandoned by Israeli troops (11.33 post).

Further south, there are reports of fresh air strikes in Rafah, where more than half the enclave's 2.3 million people have sought shelter.

A wave of Israeli airstrikes in the southern Gazan city of Rafah compounded a devastating weekend for residents, say Palestinians.

Among the victims were 17 children, all part of the same extended family.

One woman said: "These children were sleeping, what did they do? What was their fault?"

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the military will "increase the political and military pressure on Hamas in the coming days".

Our international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn reports...

Israel is yet to provide supporting evidence for its claim a significant number of UNRWA staff were members of terrorist organisations, according to a new UN report.

A review of the UN agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), led by French foreign minister Catherine Colonna, has found the group has robust frameworks to ensure compliance with humanitarian neutrality principles, though issues persist.

This review was launched after Israel alleged 12 UNRWA staff had taken part in the Hamas attacks on 7 October on Israel, which triggered the war in Gaza.

A UN oversight body is looking into those allegations in a separate investigation.

Reuters news agency reports it has reviewed a copy of the final report, which is set to be released later today.

Israel had made public claims based on an UNRWA staff list provided to it in March that "a significant number" of the group's staff were "members of terrorist organisations", the report states.

"However, Israel has yet to provide supporting evidence of this," it adds.

Several countries, including the UK, froze donations to the group following Israel's allegations.

In-person classes have been cancelled at a prestigious university in the US, as school officials hope to de-escalate tensions after pro-Palestinian protests led to mass arrests last week.

More than 100 protesters were arrested on Thursday at Columbia University in New York City when its president, Nemat Minouche Shafik, authorised police to clear an encampment set up by students demonstrating against Israel's offensive in Gaza.

In a statement today, Ms Shafik said: "These tensions have been exploited and amplified by individuals who are not affiliated with Columbia who have come to campus to pursue their own agendas."

She added: "We need a rest."

According to local media, Elie Buechler, an Orthodox rabbi at the university, told students campus and city police cannot guarantee the safety of Jewish students.

"It deeply pains me to say that I would strongly recommend you return home as soon as possible and remain home until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved," he said in a WhatsApp message sent to hundreds over the weekend.

Tensions have risen at universities across the US since the war in Gaza began and the protests at Columbia, reminiscent of the demonstrations there against the Vietnam War more than 50 years ago, are the latest in a series of protests disrupting campuses, bridges and airports.

We reported earlier the head of Israeli military intelligence has resigned over failures around the 7 October attack (see our 8.21am post).

Major General Aharon Haliva became the first senior figure to step down over Hamas's attack, which broke through Israel's vaunted defences and killed 1,200 people, with more than 200 taken back to Gaza as hostages.

Speaking at the Reichman University in Israel in May last year, he spoke of the importance of never falling victim to a "surprise" again - just five months the Hamas attack.

"This year it's the 50th anniversary of the '73 war and you know in historic terms it happened yesterday," he said, referring to the war between Israel and a coalition of Arab states in 1973.

"We should all bear in mind the main lesson from that war in how important it is to listen to other people's opinions, to be open to different thoughts and ultimately to do whatever we can to make sure that the '73 Yom Kippur War and the surprise that we experienced there will never be repeated because it's extremely important for the future of the state of Israel."

At the same event, he told an audience Hamas knows the IDF's strength "very well" and it is "not something they should test".

"In order to leave them with that thought we need to continue to maintain regional alliances, to express military might," he added.

Mr Haliva, a 38-year veteran of the military, was one of a number of senior Israeli commanders who said they had failed to foresee and prevent the deadliest attack in Israel's history.

"The intelligence division under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with. I have carried that black day with me ever since," he said in a resignation letter released by the military.

He will remain in post until a successor is named.

According to Israeli tallies, 133 people remain as hostages.

Doctors have told the Sky News team in Gaza how they saved the life of an unborn baby even as her mother was dying from head injuries inflicted during devastating Israeli airstrikes in Rafah.

The baby's mother Sabreen, her father Shoukri and three-year-old sister Malak all died in an Israeli airstrike over the weekend.

Her uncle says he will care for her now.

Watch the short report here...

Gideon Falter, the campaigner at the centre of an antisemitism row with the Met Police, has slammed comments by a former senior officer - who said he may have arrested him for assault.

It comes after Mr Falter was threatened with arrest yards away from a pro-Palestine protest, where an officer described him as "openly Jewish" and said his presence was "antagonising demonstrators".

The force apologised but then had to apologise for their apology after suggesting opponents of pro-Palestinian marches "must know that their presence is provocative".

But former Met Chief Superintendent Dal Babu said the full 13-minute video of the incident shows a "different encounter" to the one Mr Falter had described.

Mr Babu said if he had been policing the march he would have considered arresting the antisemitism campaigner for "assault on a police officer and a breach of the peace".

Gideon Falter speaks to Sky News

Mr Falter responded: "I did not assault a police officer. How on Earth can anybody say that? I'm quite clearly in the video trying to continue to walk where I was going."

He added: "I think it's a pretty outrageous thing to say, I think it's a pretty outrageous thing to be giving any credence to.

"I was Jewish. I was crossing the street."

Mr Babu later reaffirmed his view of the encounter and said the video shows Mr Falter pushing policing officers "out of the way", which amounts to "common assault".

We understand Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley is meeting the home secretary today and policing minister this week to discuss antisemitism.

Mr Falter has called for Sir Mark to step down.

The Palestinian civil defence claims it has uncovered 210 bodies from a temporary burial ground inside a hospital previously besieged and raided by Israeli forces in Gaza.

After Israel's military withdrew from the southern city of Khan Younis earlier this month, residents have been returning to the site at Nasser hospital looking for the bodies of their loved ones.

A burial area was built in the hospital when Israeli forces were besieging the facility last month, with people unable to bury the dead in a cemetery at the time, the defence group says.

At the time, people were not able to bury the dead in a cemetery and dug graves in the hospital yard.

In a statement, the department said a total of 210 bodies have been recovered from the hospital yard since Friday.

Some of those bodies were of people killed during the hospital siege, while others were killed when Israeli forces raided the hospital last month, the civil defence claims.

Relatives are looking to rebury the bodies in permanent graves elsewhere.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has given 1,500 body bags and protective gear to the civil defence to help dig up the site and move the bodies, it said.

Israeli troops advanced into Khan Younis in December, as part of its brutal ground offensive in response to Hamas's 7 October attacks in southern Israel.

At least 34,151 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's offensive on Gaza since 7 October, the enclave's Hamas-run health ministry claims.

The ministry also reports 77,084 have been wounded.

It also claims 54 people have been killed over the past 24 hours, with hospitals receiving another 104 injured.

The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its reports, but says most of those killed are women and children.

Iranian's wave the flags of Palestine and Iran they gather during an anti-Israel demonstration after the Friday noon prayer in Tehran on 19 April.

Blinken: G7 is 'committed to de-escalating'

Antony Blinken , the US secretary of state, addressed the press today at the conclusion of the G7 meeting of foreign ministers in Capri , Italy .

On behalf of the G7, he condemned Iran ’s cruise missile and drone attack on Israel that prompted an airstrike today on Isfahan , that the US says it has confirmed was carried out by Israel . It hasn not yet been confirmed by Israel or Iran.

“We’re committed to Israel’s security,” Blinken said. “We’re also committed to de-escalating.”

He noted that despite the tensions with Israel and Iran , “we remain intensely focused on Gaza”.

This day so far

It is currently 7pm in Gaza , 8pm in Tel Aviv, and 8.30pm in Tehran.

Here is a summary of what has happened so far:

the Iranian foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, said that drones reportedly fired by Israel at the Iranian city of Isfahan did not cause “any damage or casualties”, as reported by Iranian media.

The US Congress is pushing forward a $95m national security package that would provide additional aid to Israel following Israel’s reported airstrike in Iran. The bill overcame a massive hurdle with the support of Democrats in the House of Representatives. If approved this weekend, it will be sent to the Senate.

A spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry denounced the US’s veto of a Palestinian request to the UN security council, blocking the world body’s recognition of a Palestinian state. Iranian diplomat Nasser Kanani called the veto “irresponsible” and “unconstructive”.

Thank you for reading the latest updates on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Drones reportedly fired by Israel at the city of Isfahan in Iran caused no damage or casualties, said the Iranian foreign minister, Reuters reported.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian gave remarks on the drone attack while speaking with envoys of Muslim nations in New York.

“The Zionist regime’s media supporters, in a desperate effort, tried to make victory out of their defeat, while the downed mini-drones have not caused any damage or casualties,” Amirabdollahian said, according to Iranian media.

Here is an analysis of what Israel’s latest attack on Iran means for the political survival of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu , from the Guardian’s Bethan McKernan.

In the aftermath of Iran’s unprecedented salvo of missiles and drones fired directly at Israel at the weekend, Benny Gantz, a centrist member of the Israeli war cabinet, said that the country would respond “in the place, time and manner it chooses”. On Friday morning, that turned out to be explosions in the central Iranian city of Isfahan . Although no Israeli official has claimed responsibility for what seem to have been drone strikes on a military installation , Tehran, which retaliated after an airstrike on its consulate in Damascus, has downplayed the incident. The limited response may have for now staved off the threat of regional war. Unclaimed drone attacks on a military site in Isfahan are unlikely to satisfy supporters or critics of Israel’s longtime leader, Benjamin Netanyahu , or restore the level of deterrence Israel enjoyed in the region before the Hamas attack of 7 October. “Netanyahu, who has been threatening to attack Iran for 20 years, has realised a dream, or at least part thereof. The question is what about us, the people,” defence analyst and columnist for the leftwing Israeli daily Haaretz, Amos Harel, wrote on Friday. Meanwhile, Netanyahu ally and the far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, reacted with just one word – “Feeble!” – in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The Israeli prime minister may have achieved several short-term wins here. The muted Iranian reaction has soothed an anxious Israeli public before the week-long Passover holiday. Israel has also struck while it still has international diplomatic support for such an action, before the sense of urgency wanes and the world’s focus returns to the war in Gaza and its deepening famine …

A spokesperson for the foreign affairs ministry of Iran condemned the US’s veto to block full United Nations membership for Palestine, calling the decision “irresponsible”, AFP reported.

The US vetoed the Palestinian request to the UN security council, blocking the world body’s recognition of a Palestinian state.

The US was the only country to oppose the request on the 15-member security council. Twelve nations were in favor. The UK and Switzerland abstained.

“Washington’s action exposed the fraudulent nature of US foreign policy and its isolated position,” Iranian diplomat Nasser Kanani said.

Kanani added that Washington’s veto was “irresponsible” and “unconstructive”.

The US Congress is pushing forward a $95bn national security package that would provide additional aid to Israel following Israel’s airstrike in Iran.

The bill was moved forward in the House of Representatives following a critical procedural vote, the Associated Press reported. The legislation would also provide humanitarian support to Taiwan and Ukraine.

Aid for the international conflict between Russia and Ukraine has received faltering support from far-right conservatives, threatening the bill’s passage.

With the latest procedural obstacle cleared, the bill could be approved by the House this weekend and then sent to the Senate.

Afternoon summary

It has gone 5pm in Gaza , 6pm in Tel Aviv and 6.30pm in Tehran. Here is a summary of the day’s events so far:

Speaking publicly at the G7 meeting in Capri, the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, declined to elaborate further on the reported Israeli attack on Iran, except to say his country had not been involved. “I’m not going to speak to that except to say that the United States has not been involved in any offensive operations,” Blinken said.

Blinken said while the Gy was “committed” to Israel’s security, “we’re also committed to de-escalating ”. “What the G7 is focused on, and it’s reflected in our statement and in our conversation, is our work to de-escalate tensions, to de-escalate from any potential conflict,” he said. “You saw Israel on the receiving end of an unprecedented attack, but our focus has been on, of course, making sure that Israel can effectively defend itself, but also de-escalating tensions and avoiding conflict. That remains our focus.”

At a separate news conference moments before Blinken, Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, said the US was “informed at the last minute” but did not elaborate.

Air defence systems over several Iranian cities were activated, state media reported , after the country’s official broadcaster said explosions were heard near the city of Isfahan , home to sites associated with Iran’s nuclear program, including its underground Natanz enrichment site.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says there is no damage to Iran’s nuclear sites. In a post on X, the agency said it continues to monitor the situation very closely and calls for extreme restraint from all sides, stressing that “nuclear facilities should never be a target in military conflicts”.

French police arrested a man who had threatened to blow himself up at Iran’s consulate in Paris on Friday afternoon. A police source told Reuters that the man was seen at about 11am (9am GMT) entering the consulate, carrying what appeared to be a grenade and explosive vest. The man exited the consulate and was not actually carrying explosives, the source said.

Four Israeli extremist settlers in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem have been today sanctioned by the EU along with two entities over alleged “serious human rights abuses against Palestinians”.

The US also added to its settler-related sanctions today by imposing sanctions on two entities that the US said helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for two violent extremists in the West Bank already targeted with US sanctions.

The Turkish foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, on Friday spoke by phone to his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amirabdollahian, at Iran’s request to discuss regional developments , a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters. The source did not provide further details.

German airline group Lufthansa has suspended flights to Israel and Iraq until early Saturday. Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines also decided as a “precautionary measure” to suspend flights to Jordan’s capital Amman, as well as Erbil and Tel Aviv on Friday “to comprehensively reassess the security situation”. Both Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines had already suspended their flights to and from Tehran up until the end of the month.

Polish national airline LOT canceled flights on Friday to Tel Aviv and Beirut due to the unstable situation in the region, a spokesperson was quoted as saying by state news agency PAP.

Here’s a look at the area targeted last night in what the US has confirmed as an Israeli military operation in Iran:

EU imposes sanctions on four Israeli settlers

Lisa O'Carroll

The individuals on the list are: Neria Ben Pazi , 31. According to the EU’s official journal, the reason for the listing was that Ben Pazi “established four of the most violent outposts in the West Bank in 2019”. He was “one of the main perpetrators of the forced displacement of a Bedouin community of Wadi Seeq near Ramalah. His actions “have been likened to torture”, the official journal said, including an attack on 12 October last year in which Palestinians were “severely beaten, handcuffed and photographed in their underwear” as well as “urinated on”.

Another Israeli, Yinon Levi , 32, is accused of “multiple violent acts” including storming and damaging houses of Palestinian families and setting dogs on farmers.

Also on the list is Meir Mordechai Ettinger , 33, “considered a leading figure of the Hilltop Youth, a radical youth group consisting of members known for violent acts against Palestinians and their villages in the West Bank.

According to the official journal he was involved in a deadly arson attack in 2015, that killed two parents and their 18-month-old baby, for which he was detained without charge that same year.

Another member of the group, Names as Elisha Yered , born in 2001, was reported to engage in settler violence through so-called “price tag attacks” including “physical and psychosocial harassment, beatings, murder and demolition of property, against Palestinians is of a systematic nature”.

The journal says he was “part of a group of armed settlers” involved in an attack last year near Ramallah which led to the death of the 19-year-old Palestinian Qusai Jammal Mi’tan and wounded several other Palestinians”.

One of the two entities named is Lehava , which the EU’s official journal describes as a “radical right-wing Jewist supremacist group” which “uses violence and incites violence against Palestinians, Christians and Messianic Jews”. According to the journal, Lehava “organises violent protests against Jewish Muslim weddings and the LGBQTi community”.

The other entity is named as Hilltop Youth , described by the journal as “a radical group consisting of members known for violent acts against Palestinians and their villages in the West Bank”.

US sanctions on entities that raised funds for West Bank settlers

The US treasury department announced today that the US is imposing sanctions on Mount Hebron Fund and Shlom Asiraich – two entities that the US said helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for two violent extremists in the West Bank already targeted with US sanctions.

Mount Hebron Fund launched an online fundraising campaign that raised $140,000 for settler Yinon Levi after he was sanctioned in February for leading a group of settlers that assaulted Palestinian and Bedouin civilians, burned their fields and destroyed their property, the Treasury said.

Shlom Asiraich raised $31,000 for David Chai Chasdai , who the US said had initiated and led a riot that included setting vehicles and buildings on fire and causing damage to property in Huwara , resulting in the death of a Palestinian civilian.

“Mount Hebron Fund and Shlom Asiraich generated tens of thousands of dollars for extremists responsible for destroying property, assaulting civilians, and violence against Palestinians,” said Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo. “Such acts by these organizations undermine the peace, security, and stability of the West Bank. We will continue to use our tools to hold those responsible accountable.”

The US has previously sanctioned five settlers and two unauthorized outposts in the West Bank.

At least 34,012 Palestinians have been killed and 76,833 others have been injured by Israel ’s military offensive since the 7 October, Gaza ’s health ministry said on Friday.

The Hama s-run health ministry does not distinguish between combatants and non-combatants.

Man arrested in Paris after police cordon off Iranian consulate due to reported bomb threat

French police arrested a man who had threatened to blow himself up at Iran’s consulate in Paris , police said, Reuters reported.

A police source had told Reuters the man was seen at about 11 am (0900 GMT) entering the consulate, carrying what appeared to be a grenade and explosive vest.

The man exited the consulate and was not actually carrying explosives, a police source said.

Blinken says conversations on Rafah at senior levels with Israel continue

Further to the comments by Blinken already reported on the blog, there are some more lines from Reuters on what the US secretary of state said on the topic of Gaza .

At a press conference on Friday after a gathering of G7 foreign ministers on the southern Italian island of Capri , Blinken told reporters “we cannot support a major military operation in Rafah”. He said conversations on Rafah , in the southern Gaza Strip , continue at senior levels with Israel .

Blinken said he believed that “Israel’s objectives can be achieved” without a Rafah offensive. He added: “We are committed to achieving a Palestinian state with necessary guarantees for Israel.”

Qatar expressed regret on Friday over the failure of the UN security council to adopt a draft resolution recognising a Palestinian state through full membership of the UN (see 08:14 BST ), according to Reuters.

The United Arab Emirates said on Friday that granting Palestinians full membership in the UNwould be “an important step to boost peace efforts in the region”, the state-run WAM news agency reported.

German airline group Lufthansa has suspended flights to Israel and Iraq until early Saturday.

Services by airlines of the group to Tel Aviv in Israel and Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan were suspended until 5am GMT due to the “current situation”, a spokesperson told AFP.

Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines also decided as a “precautionary measure” to suspend flights to Jordan ’s capital Amman , as well as Erbil and Tel Aviv on Friday “to comprehensively reassess the security situation”.

“Austrian Airlines continuously monitors and assesses the security situation in the Middle East and is in close contact with the authorities,” Austrian Airlines said in a statement sent to AFP.

Both Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines had already suspended their flights to and from Tehran up until the end of the month.

“Today’s flight 151/152 to Israel from Warsaw and to Beirut 143/144 have been cancelled,” Krzysztof Moczulski told PAP, according to a Reuters report. Moczulski said decisions about future flights would be made on an ongoing basis.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken repeatedly declined to confirm a reported Israeli attack on Iran on Friday, saying Washington has not been involved in any offensive operations and it was committed to de-escalating tensions in the region, reports Reuters.

“I’m not going to speak to that except to say that the United States has not been involved in any offensive operations,” Blinken said at a news conference capping a gathering of G7 foreign ministers on the southern Italian island of Capri . According to Reuters reporters, the top US diplomat kept repeating the same response, almost verbatim, when he was asked about the issue several times at the news conference.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken is pictured next to a US flag at a press conference at the end of the G7 foreign ministers meeting on the Italian island of Capri on Friday.

At a separate news conference moments before Blinken, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said the US was “informed at the last minute” but did not elaborate (see 11:58 BST ).

Explosions echoed over the Iranian city of Isfahan in the early hours of Friday in what sources described as an Israeli attack, say Reuters, but Tehran played down the incident and indicated it had no plans for retaliation – a response that appeared gauged towards averting region-wide war.

Israel said nothing about the incident. It had said for days it was planning to retaliate against Iran for Saturday’s strikes, the first direct attack on Israel by Iran in decades of shadow war waged by proxies which has escalated throughout the Middle East .

United Nations secretary general António Guterres said on Friday that “it is high time to stop the dangerous cycle of retaliation in the Middle East,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

“The secretary general condemns any act of retaliation and appeals to the international community to work together to prevent any further development that could lead to devastating consequences for the entire region and beyond,” Stéphane Dujarric said, accroding to Reuters.

Iran has been trying to reassure people that the country did not face a major threat after airstrikes were carried out in the Isfahan province on Friday.

A news anchor said everything was “back to normal” in a report aired on Press TV, the Iranian state broadcaster’s English-language outlet.

In another clip, said to be filmed in Isfahan and published by Iranian media, an unidentified person is heard saying there had been no damage to the area.

Officials in Washington said Israeli forces were carrying out military operations against Iran but did not describe the character or scale of those operations. Israel and Iran are yet to confirm the source of the strikes.
