Ski Tours Europe

Come experience the big & wild mountains, fabulous food and the unique cultural identity of small ski towns

SKI THE MOUNTAINS OF EUROPE

Ready for a val d'isere or dolomites adventure.

We offer custom alpine ski trips in some of Europe's most famous ski resorts.  The last few years we've skied in Norway, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France.

In the upcoming ski season the week-long alpine ski trips will be in March to Val d'Isere, France.  Here, we'll be skiing the renowned L'Espace Killy area, or Val d'Isere - Tignes linked resorts.  It is the hometown and ski playground of the 1968 Winter Olympics triple gold winner Jean Claude Killy and 2022 Winter Olympics slalom gold winner Clement Noel.

The standard trip is 7 days, Sunday-to-Sunday.  Lodging is offered in a luxury Chalet right in the heart of the village with a 4-block walk to the lifts.  Our own in-house Chef will prepare breakfast, afternoon tea & pastries, apres-ski beers and wine and three-course gourmet dinners complete with paired wines.

In the schedule below are also listed Cross-Country and Backcountry ski trips in Norway and Alpine ski trips to the Dolomites, Italy.  Please contact us directly for detail information about these trips.

Early booking

The vacation booking season in Europe is much earlier than what is typical in the U.S.  Normally, 60% of chalets in Val d’Isere are booked by September.  Therefore, to get the preseason advantage price and desired week selection we require a 50% down payment ~6 months in advance by September 1. The payment balance deadline is December 15.  The payments are non-refundable as we fully pre-pay the holiday and services at this time.

It is possible to book later, but lodging availability will be limited and the corresponding market pricing most likely higher.

Depending on the size of each group we book a Chalet with 4 - 6 bedrooms with bathrooms and a Chef's kitchen.  Other features may include a dining room, lounge, entry hall, library/TV, steam room, massage room, whirlpool, balcony and ski lockers with boot dryers.

The typical lounge consists of soft cushioned sofas around a coffee table, reading chairs and/or futons. There is nothing better than allowing your body to sink into a relaxed state here after a long day of skiing.  The lounge tends also to be the setting for late night conversation about that day's turns, or adventures experienced long ago.

Dining room

The dining room comfortably seats the group together for meals.  Served breakfast provides you with energy and helps build anticipation for the ski day ahead.  Afternoon tea with pastries and beverages are provided upon return from the slopes.  Dinner is usually a three-course affair with paired wines.

Bedrooms & bathrooms

The Chalet's bedrooms are mostly equipped with movable beds that can be configured as a Queen bed, or single beds.  Most bedrooms come with en suite bathrooms.

The skiing in L'Espace Killy, or the Val d'Isere - Tignes linked resorts, is vast and you can ski for days without crossing your own tracks.  Unlike in the U.S., most all of the skiing is in the alpine above the tree line.  The village of Val d'Isere itself is at an elevation of 1,850m (6,070') and the ski day starts with a gondola or tram ride up and out of the village.

L'Espace Killy stretches over six valleys and two glaciers with 300 km of groomed trails spread over 25,000 acres.  The Val d'Isere - Tignes resorts together have 75 lifts including 2 underground rail trains, 3 trams and 6 gondolas.  The top of the area is at  3,456m (11,340') with over 1,600m (5,200') of vertical drop to ski.

Of the 159 official trails listed their classifications are 12 Green, 69 Blue, 44 Red and 25 Black.  They importantly vary in aspect and altitude, which allows for a choice of snow conditions when the weather is not optimal.

The weather in this region of the Alps can be fickle like in any other mountain range.   2018 was a record snow year, 2019 was average, 2020 was above average, 2022 was below average, 2023 & 2024 had average snowfall.  In March, as we approach vernal equinox, the days get longer and the weather patterns often stabilize bringing less precipitation and more sunshine.

Big mountains

Vast terrain, gentle hills, elusive powder, alpine to forest, endless trails, lunchtime view, outdoor tables, sun seating, high speed quad chairs, happy faces, scenic trails.

Breakfast is served at 8am.  A variety of cereals, pastries, fruits, egg dishes and more are served throughout the week.  Diet restrictions can be accommodated.

Lunch is typically eaten at one of the restaurants on the mountain.  The selection varies between the locales, but is always delicious as only the French can make it.

A good French lunch is not complete without an espresso.  The resulting balanced contents of your stomach aids the digesting process and the caffeine wakes you for afternoon turns.

Our Chef will prepare pastries during the day, which greet us upon our afternoon return to the Chalet.  Classic english tea is prepared and beer and wine is always available.

Dinners are served at 8pm and prepared by our Chef in the Chalet kitchen.  A variety of meats and fish are served throughout the week.  Diet restrictions can be accommodated.

The dessert is the ultimate experience of the day.  To complement you may enjoy a digestif to nudge your sensory system into hibernation for a good night's sleep.

A TYPICAL WEEK

Arrive Geneva Airport by 12 noon.  Meet at 1pm for the transfer to resort by dedicated van service.  The route is through Annecy, Albertville and Bourg St. Maurice before arriving Val d'Isere.  We settle in to the Chalet and get acquainted - welcome!

Every morning a general guided tour plan will be presented and people may choose to join, or form their own group to ski with for the day.

For example, on Monday the plan would typically be:

We explore the Bellevarde and Toviere areas and visit La Daille for a ride on the Funival rail line to the top of Bellevarde.  On our way back to the Chalet at the end of the day we ski the 1992 Albertville Olympics Men's Downhill course on the Face de Bellevarde.

Maybe we explore the Les Brevieres, Aiguille Percee, Le Palet, Val Claret and La Grande Motte areas and roam around the Olympic and World Cup freestyle course areas.

As everyone becomes familiar with the area input is encouraged and the general tour plan for the day reflect the group's preferences.  If we haven't had time the first two days, we should explore the Solaise, Le Laisinant, Le Fornet and Glacier de Pisaillas areas of the ski area.

Thursday - Friday - Saturday

We ski our favorite trails together, or in smaller groups, as your heart desires.  If we split into multiple groups, maybe we still meet for lunch, or maybe not.

Departure from Val d'Isere is at 9:00am for expected arrival at Geneva Airport before 1pm.  This allows afternoon flight departures, or sightseeing around Geneva for those who would like to see this most cosmopolitan city.

Urner Traverse, Switzerland

Known as the “skiers traverse” this route is known for it’s incredible terrain!

The Urner traverse is sometimes called the “Skiers Haute Route,” and if you know us then you know we like to ski and ride. The route covers 40 miles through the lesser traveled Urner Alps. These mountains are known for higher snow totals than other part of the European Alps.

We will do the traverse over 5 days starting in Andermatt staying in 4 alpine huts before ending our journey in Engelberg.

  • Day 1 – Realp to Albert Heim hut – A short train ride from Andermatt brings us to the village of Realp where we will walk to the trailhead and start our traverse. Day 1 is modest and typically allows us to lighten our packs at the hut before riding off of Chli Bielenhorn (9646’) or Obere Bielenlucke (10656’). Stats – 3.2mi 3419’
  • Day 2 – Albert Heim hut to Chelenalp hut – Leaving early from the hut we will descend to reach the start of the Lochberg skin. From the summit a variety of decent options exist for 4200’ descent to the Goscheneralp dam. From here we will skin up the valley to the Chelenalp hut for dinner and some rest. Stats – 7.5mi 4875’
  • Day 3 – Chelenalp hut to Steingetscher hotel – Today we skin uphill directly from the hut aiming for the Sustenlimi at 10098’. From here it is possible to descend but with the right conditions we will opt to summit the Sustenhorn (11489’) and descend 5250’ to the hotel Steingetscher. Stats – 7.2mi 3780’
  • Day 4 – Steingestscher hotel to Sustli hut – Usually the most complex day of the tour. Today we climb Ober Valley and eventually pass beneath the Fünf ngerstock, pass through the Obertal Pass and descend the Chli Sustli glacier before climbing to the Sustli Hut. Stats – 3.6mi 4698’
  • Day 5 – Sustli hut to Engelberg – Truly a highlight of the traverse despite our time in the mountain coming to a close. We leave the hut and traverse up to the Stössensattel and then wrap around a glacier to the ridge on Grassen before the long and wild descent into the  final valley that leads to Engelberg. Mostly north facing, the final leg of our tour drops us over 6000+’ into Engelberg. Stats – 5.75mi 6026’

River rafting reviews and red river adventure testimonials.

Aaron Baker

We did the Rock of Ages Canyoneering tour with 5 teenage boys and ABSOLUTELY loved it. Our tour guide, Brian, connected with the boys and walked them through each repel and helped them get comfortable. This was an epic adventure for our group. Thanks!

Marc Thomas Collier

Incredible experience splitboard touring for my wifes birthday. Very professional. Highly recommend.

Mark Popelka

John, an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide led a backcountry tour for me today. It was a full on mountain adventure with extreme weather. My kind of day in the mountains. John is the epitome of what a guide should be. He is extremely personable, patient, fit, and a master of his profession. A Guide full of experience and knowledge. I learned an incredible amount of information today on mountain travel and avalanche related topics. He took the time to explain and ensure I understood the topics. He also shared tips and techniques that made my experience a 10 out of 10. I plan to hire John in the future. You can’t go wrong asking for John. He’s amazing!

mark gregg

Carl is a consummate professional backcountry ski guide. I always learn a ton and have fun in the process. I'll be back!

Anna Rust

Honestly one of the best classes I’ve take, Jake and Vic are both through educators and great guides. If you’re looking to take a AIARE course these guys are great! I left feeling more prepared to deal with avalanche problems and identifying risks in the backcountry.

Steve Sherwood

I had a great time with John at Red River Adventures doing a ski tour yesterday. We skied around Cardiff Fork in the Wasatch, he’s a tremendous guide, such attention to detail, I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips with him. He and Carl at Red River make a dynamic team. They do rock climbing, skiing, alpine climbing, river guiding, you name it they do it. Keep it up folks!

Susan Sims

Victoria was fun and was able to adapt for what suited our time for the day. Appreciated the rescue sled tips.

George Diver

Jake and Ben were professional, informative and extremely helpful. Would recommend to anyone who feels apprehensive about taking an avalanche safety course.

Mike Martula

Amazing experience with Sam on my first back country experience

Liam Doyle

Jake and Garth were both excellent instructors, and just a blast to hang out with for a weekend. It is super obvious they both care a ton about providing an impactful educational experience - but they also made the entire weekend very fun. Highly recommend.

Lukasz Sewera

Great experience during our rescue course.

Derek Wang

It was a blast. Brain was really skilled and thoughtful.

Candice Bithell

Spent a day ice climbing with Red River. Excellent instruction, fun guide (ask for Brian!), all in all a great time. Will go again for sure! Thanks Red River!

Lawler Kang

Out of random coincidence, Sam had led me up a trail last year and strongly suggested I take this course, which was AWESOME! The experience and passion she and Jake bring to getting humans back safely and stoked is unparalleled. And the resources they walk you through and make available are profound. Can’t recommend Red River and these two strongly enough. If you’re serious about backcountry, this is an absolute must. I also really liked the small class size. Made a big difference. Looking forward to practicing my beacon finding at the resort.

Jonas Clem

Great day with Jake at Provo Canyon. Very skilled guides that go above and beyond. Highly recommend….

Ryan Kelly

Alex was an awesome instructor. We had a great day going over all of the different avalanche rescue techniques.

Anthony Torma

Amazing guides who are knowledgeable and charismatic. Took an AIARE 1 class through them and it was an amazing time. I learned so much!

Mark Sims

Amazing experience with John and Garth in our Avi 1 class. They were great teachers and I feel confident in the skills I acquired through their instruction.

David Johnson

Sam was a fantastic guide and instructor. Very skilled at building our skills in the backcountry!

Daniel Mills-Thysen

John, Jeremy, and Garth are all awesome and taught a great course in a beautiful area. If you are taking AIRIE 1 and don't have skis/board or beacon/probe/shovel they will help you out and loan you what you need for the course!

Rochelle Erskine

Sam delivered an awesome rescue course!

christy mallak

I went on August 31st, Leaky was our guide. He was awesome and was very pleased with our white water rafting. Thanks so much

Richard Cox

We did the full day with lunch and was extremely pleased! Our guide was outstanding, the trip was great and the food was delicious. Highly recommended.

Kyle Drenckhahn

No need to waste time reading this review when you could already be on their website signing up, but I suppose it's your time to waste, so here's the deal. A couple weeks ago, my friend suggested we go rafting in Moab together. She had previously done a trip with Red River Adventures a while back and loved it, so it seemed like a safe bet for my inaugural float. Simple sign up, fair prices, and knowledgeable guides. Pretty much a no-brainer. It totally held up. We had a blast with our guide, the absolutely incredible Molly. Her witty humor and kindness were only matched by her knowledge of the area and of the river itself. Between the named rapids, of which she had complete and utter control over, she kept the group entertained with fun little facts about the local geography, wildlife, and surrounding community. It was an even better experience than I had hoped for. One and only one complaint: On our way back to our vehicles after the trip, Molly gave our group some recommendations for restaurants in the area, including burgers at Milt's. It sounded like the perfect place for my friend and I to grab a quick bite on our way out of town since we were running short on time, so we stopped by. They were "temporarily closed." Molly, burgers are on you next time I see ya. ;)

Roland Ducomble

We had a great day of rafting. Very well organized. Thanks to our guide Kira, she very professional and entertaining. Lunch was very good thanks to Leaky. Overall a perfect day.

Sam Mckellar

Best rafting trip we've been on, and certainly not our first. Highly recommend

Liu Qian

Definitely a Great day on the River. Leaky kept us entertained the whole journey and there can be some swimming. We did the full day which lasts much longer on the River and had a free lunch.

Elizabeth S

Had an awesome time rock climbing in Moab with Red River Adventures. Our guide, Ryan, was super cool and also professional and had safety as his #1 importance the whole time. Great temperatures and we were in the shade the whole time (did this approx 7:30am-12pm). Would definitely come again!

Michael Myers

I had a blast!

Gummi Bear

We enjoyed the rafting very much. We had a great time, and I especially enjoyed the swimming on the side of the boat portion. I loved the trip and highly recommend it.

James Wojcik

Very relaxing and fun float. Class 1 and 2 rapids were obviously pretty easy but Molly, our guide, was great and the view was spectacular.

Jacob Nizri

Great experience!!!

Austin Adams

We had the best morning on the water with Red River! We did the half day rafting trip on the Colorado through the canyon. The scenery was amazing, our guide Ryan (and all the guides) was great, we had lots of time for swimming, and it was a great intro into whitewater for my younger son. Top notch organization!

Dustin Farris

It was a lot of fun. I was not to sure what to expect but it was the best part of our trip. I would do the full day (I think its called 1/2 day). The information said it would be a bbq lunch but it was better than that. The lunch they provided was my favorite meal of our entire trip. Ryan was our guide and he did great and made it interesting and fun. 19/10 stars

MK

We loved our experience at Red River Adventures! The guides were great - funny and provided lots of interesting facts along the way! Our kids age 12,10, 7 loved their first time white water rafting! Breathtaking views.

Megan Kremser

My two kids (9 and 11 years old) did the full day white water rafting and morning Bow and Arrow canyoneering adventures. We had an awesome time and they are already to visit Moab again!

Mckenna Evans

Very fun! The ride is a tad shorter than anticipated. I would go for the full day trip. Lots of chances to swim and generally goof around.

Kristin Mathew

Dan was an amazing guide! Very down to earth and made us feel safe and comfortable at every step of the way.

Erika Anderson

Had a great time!

Alison Scott

Red River adventures did a great job with our large group of adults and teenagers! We’d definitely go with them again! And if you can, make sure you get Brendan as your guide, he’s the best!

Ava Cox

My husband and I had a great time! Our guide, Kinsley, was amazing! She explained everything and make us feel safe and comfortable. The hike wasn't too strenuous and the views were spectacular! I'll definitely want to do this again next time we're in Moab.

Emily Hatch

Awesome trip. The guides were so friendly and fun and also focused on safety. The lunch was incredible (chickpea curry!) and in addition to the gorgeous canyon red rock scenery we saw river otters and mountain goats. The length of the full trip was perfect and we wish we could do it again tomorrow.

Brooke Casselberry

It was a great day on the river!

Suzette Henschell

Shout out to Ryan who did a fantastic job leading our morning white water adventure. We had a great time. Highly recommend. Thanks again Ryan!

Amy Miller

My husband and I decided to do the full day white water rafting trip at the end of June. The experience was fun and enjoyable. The entire team was kind, friendly and really seemed to care about everyone having a good experience. Things were very well organized but the highlight for us was our guide Olivia. She was awesome. She was very nice, funny and extremely knowledgeable of the area and the environment. Great experience and I would recommend this company and if you are lucky to have her, Olivia, as your guide.

Bruce T

Competent guides, incredible scenery- just an awesome experience all around. The full guided trip seems like a bargain in retrospect. Our guide was Jonas and he did a hell of a job navigating us through some gnarly class 2-3 rapids during highwater (15-20k cfs).

Cyndi Diaz

This was so amazing!! We loved the experience. Perfect for a family and you just can’t beat the scenery 🙌🏻

bert ballet

We had a great trip! Mackenzie was a great guide, she was very pleasant and we felt very safe with her!

Riley Heaton

Canyoneering was great! Ryan was the best. 2nd most handsome guide... I think... I didn't meet the other guides. But fr, he's pretty great

lauren cooper

We had an amazing time on our first climb of the trip. We climbed at the Ice Cream Parlor with Kenzie, who was super cool and amazing. She was able to answer all of our questions about the area and provided a very positive experience for us

The 8 Best Ski Resorts in Europe to Visit

S kiing in Europe offers an incomparable setting: Endless peaks capped with meringue-like cloaks of snow, acres of above-treeline ski terrain, massive trail networks, and on-mountain restaurants well beyond the typical ski-area cafeteria.

Here are the eight best ski resorts in Europe that encapsulate the experience.

1. St. Moritz

  • Location: Switzerland
  • Best for: skiers looking for unique on-snow experiences, super-pipe fans, families, and cross-country enthusiasts
  • Visit: St. Moritz

St. Moritz may have a swanky rep, with snow polo (yes, on horses), opulent stores, and a jet-set clientele, but it also offers ample no-pretense skiing. Three separate resorts combine for 88 trails and boundless off-piste terrain (one pass accesses all), while a handful of smaller slopes in nearby towns cater to pint-size beginners.

The Diavolezza/Lagalb area has Switzerland's longest glacier run (about six miles) as well as full-moon ski nights, when the cable car runs into the evening. The freestyle park at Corvatsch/Furtschellas will host one of the world's largest half-pipes starting in February 2024, while Corviglia offers yoga and skiing sessions along its Paradiso run. For a change of pace, the surrounding Engadin Valley has Switzerland's largest network of cross-country ski trails , 150 miles in all.

Where to stay

  • Book now: Grace La Margna St. Moritz

The Grace La Margna St. Moritz hotel, overlooking Lake St. Moritz, reopened in August 2023 after a renovation of the original 1906 art nouveau building plus a new addition.

2. Andermatt

  • Best for: Epic Passholders (access to Disentis is new for 2023–24) and powder seekers
  • Visit : Andermatt

Skiers have come to Andermatt since the early 1900s to enjoy the region's abundant powder. In 2005, the area in central Switzerland started skyrocketing even more in stature thanks to Egyptian developer Samih Sawiris . At the invitation of the Swiss government, he sunk almost $2 billion into lodging, amenities, and real estate to revive the once-sleepy town.

Skiers of all levels can explore three interconnected resorts-Andermatt, Sedrun, and Disentis-via 33 lifts and 110 miles of trails that sprawl across neighboring Alpine peaks. The slopes directly above Andermatt include steep runs on Gemsstock Mountain, including one named for 1970s Olympic champ Bernhard Russi that plunges almost 3,000 feet over 3.5 miles, as well as gentler trails on Nätschen and Gütsch mountains.

  • Book now: Chedi Andermatt

Splurge at the Chedi Andermatt , designed by hotel starchitect Jean-Michel Gathy in an Asian-inflected chalet style. It has an outstanding spa and two Michelin-starred restaurants.

3. Chamonix

  • Location: France
  • Best for: adventurous skiers, Ikon Passholders
  • Visit: Chamonix

For adventure seekers, Chamonix has long been a holy grail. Sitting in the shadow of 15,782-foot Mont Blanc, western Europe's highest peak, the area is the birthplace of extreme skiing, thanks to the precipitous slopes high above town and a mountain culture steeped in taking risks.

There are five areas in the Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley: Les Grands Montets, an expert's paradise; Les Houches and Le Tour/Vallorcine/Balme, both great for advanced beginners and intermediates; and La Flégère and Le Brévent, two linked resorts with runs for all levels. Plus there's the Aiguille du Midi, a peak reached by France's highest cable car; from there, an iconic off-piste ski experience for advanced intermediates and up ( guide recommended) descends more than 9,000 feet down the glaciated Vallée Blanche with stellar views of the Mont Blanc Massif.

  • Book now: Wanderlust Motels

The Wanderlust Motels brand brings the adventure lodging vibe to the French Alps, with on-trend retro decor in rooms that sleep up to six, plus a restaurant, coffee shop, pool, and ski shop.

4. Val d'Isère/Tignes

  • Best for: families, beginners, après-ski aficionados
  • Visit: Val d'Isère / Tignes

Each of these side-by-side ski resorts in the Savoie region's Tarentaise Valley offers plenty of skiing on its own, but combined, this glacier-capped behemoth provides 186 miles of trails and 71 lifts. Skiers will find it all: vast snowfields, thigh-burning steppes, long cruisers, gentle slopes. Tignes has nine free lifts that serve dedicated beginner areas.

Families also find lots to love here, with a slate of on-snow activities for kids like horseback riding and an igloo village. Val d'Isère's Gypaète Adventure Slope includes nature-inspired interactive features, such as a vulture-themed ski-through tunnel. On the flip side, après-ski is legendary at the on-mountain La Folie Douce , where you'll hear the thump of the dance party, with costumed performers, well before you ski into the venue.

  • Book now: Hôtel Kandahar

The Alpine-chic Hôtel Kandahar has long been a go-to for convenience and charm; it's located in the historic village of Val d'Isère within a short walk of the lifts.

5. St. Anton am Arlberg

  • Location: Austria
  • Best for: skiers who want a huge variety; ski-history buffs
  • Visit: St. Anton am Arlberg

Known as the birthplace of Alpine skiing, Austria's Arlberg region has attracted skiers for more than a hundred years. It's the country's largest interconnected ski area ; seven resorts-including St. Anton, Zurs, and Lech-offer almost 200 miles of ski trails and another 125 miles of off-piste runs, catering to every type of skier.

The variety of lifts and cable cars is dizzying, too: one, the Galzigbahn, even loads like a Ferris wheel. The signed Run of Fame takes skiers on a 52-mile route around all the ski areas, including the on-mountain Hall of Fame, where interactive exhibits showcase the ski pioneers and celebrities who shaped the region.

  • Book now: Ullrhaus

The 40-room, Scandinavian-style Ullrhaus sits in the heart of St. Anton, with walking access to two cable cars; it has a spa, pool, and restaurant.

  • Best for: beginners and intermediates, Indy Pass holders
  • Visit: SkiWelt

Despite its immense size-168 miles of trails and 82 lifts-this resort in Austria's Tyrol region has not been on many U.S. skiers' radar. That changed this fall when the Indy Pass announced the resort as a new partner. Nine villages provide slope access, and the ski area is second only to Arlberg in size.

With 80 on-mountain huts, SkiWelt makes it easy to take a break for schnitzel or strudel while enjoying the views of snow-laden peaks extending for miles. Last winter, the resort introduced two SkiWelt tours, designated routes of 42 or 52 miles of trails and lifts that circumnavigate the whole ski area.

  • Book now: KraftAlm

Each of the nine villages offers lodging; the on-mountain KraftAlm , reached only by gondola, was renovated in 2021 and now houses 29 modern Alpine rooms, a restaurant, and a jaw-dropping indoor/outdoor infinity pool.

7. Garmisch-Partenkirchen

  • Location: Germany
  • Best for: families and beginners, those looking for recreation aside from downhill skiing
  • Visit: Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Only about an hour from Munich by train or car, Garmisch-Partenkirchen oozes Gemütlichkeit (coziness and good cheer). Beginners and families can hone skills at the Garmisch-Classic ski area, with 25 miles of trails and a special area for kids; experts will want to try the insanely steep Kandahar run, a regular stop on the World Cup race circuit.

Intrepid visitors can even spend the night on the Zugspitze in a multiroom igloo (equipped with beds and warm sleeping bags). Garmisch-Partenkirchen also offers 17 miles of free Nordic ski trails and weekly lessons in biathlon (the combo of cross-country skiing and target shooting that's hugely popular in Germany).

  • Book now: Staudacherhof

The family-run Staudacherhof has a classic German Alpine vibe, as well as an emphasis on wellness, with an expansive spa and options for Ayurvedic massage, yoga, and meals.

8. Cortina d'Ampezzo

  • Location: Italy
  • Best for: intermediates, off-piste skiers, luxury seekers, Ikon Passholders
  • Visit: Cortina d'Ampezzo

Skiers come to this classic resort in northern Italy's Dolomites for la dolce vita. The four ski areas here make up part of the Dolimiti Superski : 745 miles of trails and 450 lifts accessed with one pass (also the Ikon Pass). The ski terrain around Cortina is exceptional for intermediates, though more advanced skiers, too, will be wowed by the Dolomites' rugged scenery, with rocky spires rising like snowy sentinels all around. One epic run, the Armentarola, starts at the Lagazuoi ski area and ends with a horse drawn–carriage ride to the lifts.

Off-piste skiing is plentiful, too, and strong intermediates and experts should hire a guide to experience renowned descents like the Lagazuoi Couloir or Sci 18. Then there's Cortina itself, long a destination for its centuries of history, elegant hotels and shops, and restaurants serving Tyrolean-inflected Italian fare.

  • Book now: Hotel de Len

The centrally located Hotel de Len is a renovated historic property and uses reclaimed wood accents throughout, including the spa and restaurant, for a naturally elevated ambience.

St. Moritz, located in the Swiss Alps, is one of the best places to ski in Europe.

What is ski touring?

Ski touring offers a unique blend of uphill and downhill skiing, setting it apart from traditional alpine skiing. Unlike alpine skiing, where you rely on ski lifts to take you to the top, ski touring involves ascending the mountain under your own power. Special bindings allow for a free-heel mode for uphill travel, and you’ll use climbing skins for added traction. Once you reach the summit, simply lock your heels back in place and enjoy your descent, just like you would in alpine skiing.

The beauty of ski touring lies in its versatility and the freedom it offers. Whether interested in short-day tours or multi-day adventures, ski touring allows you to explore off-the-beaten-path terrains and untouched snow. It’s a sport that combines the physical challenge of climbing with the adrenaline rush of downhill skiing, offering a well-rounded mountain experience.

About Ski Resorts in the Alps

Experience a place where skiing is deep-rooted in the culture and way of life. Skiing has existed in Europe's Alps for several hundred years. First as a means of transportation through the rugged mountains and more recently, as a fun way to recreate during the winter months.

Throughout France , Switzerland , Italy , Austria and Germany ski vacationers can experience dozens of perfectly preserved villages and hamlets boasting original chalets, hotels, inns, and restaurants. A Europe ski vacation is also great for the skier or snowboarder who enjoys their leisure time. On-mountain restaurants offer sunny patios, mind-boggling views, and world-class wine lists, sometimes making the Alpine dining scene and après-ski experience a more popular activity than the top-notch skiing.

If you don’t ski or snowboard or you like to include other things on your Europe ski vacation, Ski.com has the inside scoop on plenty of other activities, including snow tubing, zip-lining, fat biking, ice skating, shopping, paragliding, spa treatments, and of course, dining.

You are currently viewing Ski Tours Europe: The Best Skiing and Snowboarding Destinations Across the Continent

Are you looking for something to do this holiday season? Forget about staying at home all day and binge-watching the latest TV series. You can make once-in-a-lifetime memories on a ski tour in Europe.

Why you should go on a European ski tour

  • Stay fit and healthy

Skiing and snowboarding are not your typical sports. Instead of hanging out at the gym, you’ll get to bask in beautiful views of the European mountain ranges and enjoy the crisp and cool air.

Not to mention winter sports are an excellent way to stay on top of your fitness goals for the holidays. Skiing and snowboarding can help improve your balance and boost your body’s flexibility. Plus, they can strengthen your muscles while burning 300 to 500 calories per hour.

  • Reignite your passion

When was the last time you went skiing? Unless you live near a ski resort, skiing can be quite inaccessible. However, this doesn’t mean you should give up your love for the sport completely. This year, why not invite your friends and family to a ski trip? Not only will you be able to enjoy their company, but you’ll also rediscover your passion for the slopes.

  • Find a new adventure

Even the most seasoned skiers have a route they have yet to tackle. If you’ve always wanted to ride down the slopes of the Italian Alps, now is your chance. You can even design your trip for off-piste skiing, so you can finally discover your new favorite route.

Discovering the top destinations for a ski tour in Europe

Switzerland

You can’t mention skiing without thinking of Switzerland. The country may be small, but it has no shortage of ski resorts to visit. In fact, Switzerland has more than 300 famous ski resorts. If you’re having trouble choosing the right destination, here are some of the top-rated Swiss ski spots:

Would you like to see the Matterhorn in all its glory? Then, Zermatt is the way to go. Known as the highest winter sports area in the Alps, Zermatt sits at altitudes between 2500 to 3900 meters.

Thanks to its height, Zermatt is also home to the highest 3S cableway in the world: the Matterhorn Glacier Ride. The resort is famous for its winding, picturesque ski runs that are designed for skiers of all levels.

Luxury and skiing go hand in hand. Just take a look at St. Moritz, Switzerland’s most elegant ski resort. The area is filled with high-end shops, five-star hotels, and world-class restaurants.

And, of course, you can’t forget about the ski runs in St. Moritz. Once the site of the Winter Olympics, this extravagant ski resort is home to intermediate-level routes. If you want to take a break from skiing, you can also visit the Segantini Museum and the Engadiner Museum to wind down.

When you think of Italy, you might be reminded of your favorite Italian dish or its famous historical landmarks. But did you know that Italy is also a top ski destination? After all, the country is surrounded by the Dolomites and the Italian Alps.

Here are just a few of Italy’s best ski resorts:

  • Val Gardena

The Dolomites are some of Italy’s most attractive natural highlights. This mountain range surrounds the northeastern front of the country and is made of carbonate rock called dolomite—hence its name.

Atop the Dolomites, you’ll find Val Gardena, a cozy and quaint ski resort. The area boasts 160 km of trails and lifts, linked to neighboring destinations like Cortina d’Ampezzo and forming 400 km of interconnected skiing. It also hosts the longest slope in South Tyrol, which runs for 10 km and drops 1273 into a naturally formed canyon.

You can never go wrong with the classics. Sestriere is one of the oldest ski resorts in Italy, first developed in the 1930s by Fiat founder Giovanni Agnelli. The hotels built by Agnelli still stand today, known as the Duchi d’Aosta and La Torre towers.

Due to its long history and prestige, Sestriere is a popular destination for the rich and famous. If you’re searching for a luxurious and fulfilling ski vacation on top of the Savoy Alps, Sestriere won’t disappoint.

Want to experience some of the world’s biggest ski areas? The top ten largest interconnected ski areas are heaven on earth for ski enthusiasts, and France is home to seven of the ten. Not only that, but going on a France ski trip gives you access to traditional and elegant chalets, gorgeous views, and Michelin-starred restaurants.

France also boasts a wide selection of ski resorts, including:

In France’s Paradiski area, the third-largest linked ski domain in the country, you’ll find Les Arcs. Frequented by experienced skiers, Les Arcs is known for its high open runs and unique woodland trails. For those who seek an even bigger challenge, the area is also filled with long off-piste routes.

Beginner skiers and new visitors need not worry about finding something to do in Les Arcs. If you want to do something relaxing, for instance, you can go paragliding or schedule a helicopter tour. Families can also enjoy a sleigh ride drawn by huskies or horses.

  • Val d’Isere

Found only five kilometers from the Italian border, Val d’Isere is a friendly and beautiful ski resort with an outstanding location. It features more than 150 lifts carrying skiers across 300 km of terrain at 1500 meters above sea level.

The area is known to have one of Europe’s largest snowmaking capacities, allowing it to have a much longer ski season than most resorts. It also boasts over 20 black runs for experts and off-piste routes for the adventure-seeker at heart.

Ski tours in Europe offer a unique vacation experience, allowing you to go above and beyond the world’s highest peaks. And the best thing is that you don’t have to plan the entire trip yourself. • The 8 best ski tours in Europe

ski tours europe

Multi-day ski tours offer a perfect opportunity to explore the winter mountains, far away from busy resorts and the mainstream ski industry. Lead Guide Matt picks 8 of his favourite multi-day adventures...

Picking a 'best of' list is always a little frustrating, not wanting to leave out excellent and worthy tours, perhaps a better description would be '8 classic and distinctive tours'.

The journeys selected here are geographically diverse and give the aspiring ski tourer a nice tick list. These tours reflect the choice and geographical diversity on offer to the adventurous skier within the mountains of Europe.

What I love about guiding classic multi-day ski tours is the sense of mission. Unlike backcountry skiing, where the primary objective is to find the best turns in the best snow, touring has a different focus which is to complete the overland journey; this is a great recipe for adventure. Multi-day, also known as  hut-to-hut tours offer much more than the skiing itself. Guides develop close relationships with the other members of our group and find genuine hospitality in mountain huts and hotels plus a great comradery is found with other parties of skiers following the same route. In addition, hut-to-hut ski tours give us the feeling of isolation in a wilderness, even in the heart of densely populated Europe, just you, your skis and backpacks and fellow travellers. Other than the huts, we see no or little signs of habitation for the duration of the tour, so it really is just us and the mountain environment. Our skis cease to be mere sports equipment but become tools essential for progress.

Haling from Derbyshire, Matt Dickinson is one of three Mountain Tracks' Lead Guides. After cutting his teeth on the Peak Districts infamous gritstone edges, Matt became a fully qualified IFMGA Mountain Guide in 2000. Since then he has guided summer and winter expeditions all over the world, so if anyone can give us the inside scoop on the best ski tours in Europe, it's Matt! Here are Matt's 8 tours, in no particular order. We hope this inspires you to ‘put your skins on’ and experience one or more for yourself!

Number 1: Chamonix to Zermatt: The Haute Route

ski tours europe

Country: France and Switzerland Start Point: Chamonix End Point: Zermatt Nearest Airport: Geneva Length of Tour: 5-6 Days skiing

Meaning literally ‘high route’ the Haute Route is THE most famous ski tour in the Alps and is a journey that every ski touring enthusiast should undertake at least once in their career. The crossing takes 5 or 6 days depending on the route taken (or longer on the Grand Lui or Saas extensions). Most of the route traverses huge glaciers, crossing high and steep passes so there are constantly changing views and surprisingly varied environments.

The tour links two historic alpine centres, Chamonix and Zermatt, and traverses sections of two of the highest Alpine ranges: the Mont Blanc Massif and the Swiss Valais. A great deal of the tour is above 3000m.

There are two route choices for the middle section of the tour: The Verbier variant and the Valsoray variant. The Verbier route is easier and by far the most popular. The Valsory variant has more climbing and a difficult ascent and traverse called the Plateau du Couloir which requires reasonable weather and fairly stable snow conditions.

For an advanced skier, it really is a "must do" trip, one that you'll never forget.

Why choose this tour?

• A famous and historic journey • The physical challenge • Skiing amongst the highest peaks in the Alps, including a descent directly beneath the Matterhorn north face

How difficult is this tour?

For fit and advanced skiers. 1000m – 1200m of ascent per day. The length of each day varies between 6 -10 hours. The downhill skiing is never steeper than 35 degrees, but the descents are long and in variable snow.

Due to its legendary status, Mountain Tracks' Haute Route trips are always the first to fill up, find out more about completing the Chamonix to Zermatt pilgrimage here.

Number 2: The Bernese Oberland Traverse

ski tours europe

Country: Switzerland Start Point: Interlaken End Point: Munster or Grimsel at the head of the Rhone valley. Nearest Airport: Geneva or Zurich Length of Tour: 5-6 Days skiing

Home of the Eiger, the Bernese Oberland range is located in central Switzerland. The setting here is a spectacular high mountain landscape complete with giant glaciated valleys more akin to Alaska than the Alps. This classic tour, typically attempted over a week crosses the massif from north to south. The scenery is among the very best in the Alps with classic views of the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger. The majority of the tour is on huge tumbling glaciers which converge at the source of the giant Aletschgletscher, the largest glacier in the Alps. The trip is especially rewarding late in the season, because the whole voyage stays in the high mountains, never needing to descend to valley bottoms. There is the opportunity to make ski descents of several summits including 4000m peaks. Truly this is a beautiful and special place.

What is unique about this tour?

• High and remote, one of the great unpopulated wildernesses in Europe. • Big glacier skiing at its best amongst 4000m peaks • Excellent conditions can be found until the end of May

For fit intermediate off-piste skiers and above. Previous ski touring experience is essential, skiers should be happy to skin for 4-5 hours per day. Most of the descents are not particularly steep (30 degrees and under) but high mountain dangers are present. A good level of fitness is required in order to sustain six days of consistent effort.

Discover why this tour has made the list for yourself this season!

Number 3: Elbrus - an Adventure in the Caucasus

ski tours europe

Country: Russia Start Point: Adyrsu Valley End Point: Terskol Nearest airport: Mineralny Vody Length of Tour: 8 days skiing

The Caucasus form a chain of snowy, high, alpine mountains separating Georgia from Russia to the north. Just north of the main chain, in Russia, lies Europe’s highest summit - the twin-peaked Mount Elbrus. The main chain itself contains many mountains over 5000m. In springtime the valleys, passes and mountains of the Caucasus offer exceptionally fine ski-touring in virtually undeveloped surroundings. The summit of Elbrus is at 5642m, over 800m above the summit of Mont Blanc, so a structured acclimatisation period is essential

The tour begins at the Ullu-Tau lodge located at 2350m in the remote upper part of the Adyrsu Valley. This is a region of glaciers, passes and summits ranging from 3572m to 3900m. After four days touring in the Adyrsu Valley, a vehicle transfer is used into the Baksan Valley. Almost at the end of the Baksan Valley, at the foot of Elbrus, lies the town of Terskol - the Chamonix of the Caucasus. It boasts about half a dozen hotels and two ski lift systems. There is a possibility for several other tours in the area to view the highest peak in Europe.

The second half of the tour focuses on the ascent of Elbrus. The ascent route is none technical but very strenuous, the high altitude being the most difficult obstacle to overcome. The ski terrain on Elbrus itself is relatively straightforward but exciting and exceptionally long; a 3000m descent is possible from the summit, this is possible in very few places in the world.

What’s unique about this tour? • The highest peak in Europe • Located in a vast and high mountain range infrequently visited by western travellers • Long descents on great snow lasting until the end of May

How difficult is this tour? For fit and advanced skiers. 1200m – 1800m of ascent per day. The length of each day varies between 7 -12 hours. The touring is at higher altitudes than in the Alps so optimum fitness is essential. The downhill skiing is never steeper than 35 degrees, but the descents are long and in variable snow. Crampons and ice axes may be required on the upper slopes which are easy angled but often icy in the morning hours.

Find out more about conquering this 5642m peak here.

Number 4: The Gran Paradiso National Park

ski tours europe

Country: Italy Start and finish point: Valsavarenche valley, close to Aosta Nearest Airport: Geneva or Turin Length of Tour: 3-6 days

The Gran Paradiso at 4061m is the highest mountain entirely within Italy and sits in one of the most idyllic National Parks in the Alps. This hut to hut tour circumnavigates the massif and cumulates with an ascent of the Gran Paradiso. The trails are generally quieter than in France and Switzerland and when combined with friendly Italian hospitality it all adds up to a great week's ski touring. The massif is accessed via the Aosta Valley which stretches south from Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco in Italian) at its head. Attractive mountain villages pepper the hillsides and the area boasts great food and coffee and a rich offering of good wines. Due to its national park status, the plant and wildlife are protected so the tour itself is a paradise for nature lovers. There is no ski infrastructure in the National Park.

To reach the summit of the Paradiso itself (4061m) is a strenuous climb with a short rock scramble to attain the top. However, it is all very worthwhile because skiers are rewarded with a descent of over 2000m.

What’s unique about this tour?

  • The Opportunity to ski from a 4000m peak
  • Explore an exceptional National Park
  • Italian Hospitality

For fit, upper intermediate, off-piste skiers. 700m – 1300m of ascent per day. The length of each day varies between 6 -10 hours. The downhill skiing is never steeper than 35 degrees, but the descents are long and in variable snow. Crampons are ice axes are required for the final ridge of the Gran Paradiso.

Explore this idyllic national park on skis over 3 days or 6 days .

Number 5: The Italian Haute Route

ski tours europe

Country: Italy and Switzerland Start Point: Cervinia End Point: Zermatt Length of Tour: 5-6 days

Nicknamed the ‘Spaghetti tour', This challenging hut to hut tour traverses the Monte Rosa chain situated on the Swiss Italian border. The Monte Rosa massif has the highest land area in the Alps over 4000m. There is an element of mountaineering in this voyage, so in addition to being a strong skier, tourers should also be able to handle an axe and crampons. It is possible for skiers to summits on several 4000m within this massif, so long and exciting descents are assured. The highest point in the Monte Rosa Massif is the Dufourspitze (4634m) which is the second highest mountain in the Alps. It is possible ascend by skins to all but the last hundred meters of this summit, the top section requiring mountaineering skills.

There is a mix of Italian and Swiss mountain huts in the area, all are comfortable with hearty meals and stunning mountain views. The tour can include a stay in the famous Margherita hut (4556) which is the highest in the Alps.

What’s unique about this tour

  • A true ski mountaineering expedition
  • Physically challenging, one of the most difficult of the classic ski tours
  • The opportunity to summit on several 4000m peaks

For fit, advanced skiers with mountaineering skills. 700m – 1800m of ascent per day. The length of each day varies between 6 -12 hours. This is one of the most challenging of the classic tours, with a combination of long ascents and steep slopes (some above 35 degrees). In addition crampons and ice axe are used for sections of the journey to negotiate areas of ice and rock.

Number 6: The Austrian Alps: Silvretta Traverse

ski tours europe

Country: Austria Start Point: Landeck End Point: Galtür Nearest Airport: Innsbruck Length of tour: 5-6 days

This classic ski tour and gives you a great introduction to hut-to-hut ski touring. There is a wide choice of excellent ski peaks and the area has fantastic snow reliability. The fully serviced huts are very comfortable with hot showers, great beer and a jovial atmosphere. Many people choose the Silvretta to cut there teeth on their first hut to hut tour. The terrain is glaciated and on some summits will need to use crampons and ice axe to reach the top, but with the help of your guide, no previous mountaineering experience is necessary.

The Silvretta Range is located along the Swiss, Austrian border south of the well known Arlberg ski resort of Saint Anton. The entire massif is covered with large but gentle glaciers and accessible cols. The terrain is particularly user-friendly to the ski tourer, the summits are lower than in Western Alps, typically between 3000m and 3300m, meaning it is possible to ski right of the top of the high summits, where in the Western Alps many of the high peaks demand a mountaineering approach. The route travels to the west, each day crossing high passes which access to the next valley system. Here the touring season starts early (mid-Feb) so this is a great early season ski tour.

  • An abundance of ski-friendly summits
  • Suitable for first timers
  • Some of the most comfortable huts in the Alps

For intermediate off-piste skiers. Touring skills can be learned en-route. 600m–1000m of ascent per day. The length of each day varies between 5 -8 hours. The downhill sections are 30 degrees or under, but as always variable snow should be expected. Crampons and ice axe are used to attain the summits of certain peaks, but these are not compulsory to complete the tours. Although easier than the other tours in this article the terrain is still remote and dramatic and as always a determined approach is required.

Enjoy this incredible multi-day traverse this season with Mountain Tracks.

Number 7: Dolomites Circuit

ski tours europe

Country: Italy Start and Finish Point: Cortina Nearest Airport: Venice Length of tour: 5-6 days

The Dolomites are a 'must-visit' for all mountain lovers. Breathtakingly beautiful and steeped in history, a touring circuit in the Dolomites is guaranteed to fascinate and excite. The range is situated in the far northeast of Italy a couple of hours north of Venice. Characterizing the region are remote valleys, dominated by the towering limestone cliffs and pinnacles.

  • Exceptional local food and hospitality
  • Breathtaking panoramas and dramatic scenery
  • Rich history

For intermediate off-piste skiers. Touring skills can be learned en-route. 600m–1000m of ascent per day. The length of each day varies between 5 -8 hours. The downhill sections are 35 degrees or under, but as always variable snow should be expected. Crampons and ice axe are used to attain the summits of certain peaks, but these are not compulsory to complete the tours. As always good ski-fitness and a determined approach are required.

Find out more about completing a lap of this incredible range here.

Number 8: The Queras National Park Traverse

Queyrass

Country: France Start Point: Saint Véran (highest village in Europe) End Point: Abries Nearest Airport: Grenoble or Nice Length of tour: 5-6 days

  • A quiet corner of rural alpine France
  • Unique flora and fauna
  • A quiet and less frequented area

This is for Intermediate off-piste skiers, who have some previous day-touring experience. The slopes are less than 35 degrees. The length of each day varies between 4-8 hours. 500m–1000m of ascent per day. Mountaineering skills and equipment are not needed, so rucksacks are lighter.

Escape the humdrum of everyday life in this quiet corner of the Alps this season.

Where powder and culture collide

Europe guided tours, challenging off-piste, incredible backcountry, world-class resorts and unique cultural experiences make europe the ultimate destination for a freeride snowboard and ski tour. the sheer number of resorts in europe means that once you arrive in a major transit hub, it's a relatively short drive or flight until you can access pretty much any kind of terrain that you could hope for. there are roughly 1200 resorts in europe which would make it one of the biggest shreddable expanses in the world. thanks to these massive ski areas, the statistical chances of scoring freshies for days are a lot higher. the countless small, hidden resorts across europe mean that folk spread out way more. and unless you’re heading to one of the major freeride areas like chamonix, your every day european skier or snowboarder just isn’t as powder hungry as their north american or australian/kiwi counterparts. all of this, of course, adds up to way more fresh tracks and faceshots for you and i. one of the other great reasons to ski or snowboard in europe is the culture. there are countless alpine towns and villages that live and breathe the mountains, where the locals have lived and worked in these mountain towns all their lives. we’re talking about the families that farm the valleys in the off-season and the small-town shop and bar owners – all who will have ridden the local hills since they were old enough to walk., arctic roadtrip swedish lapland & norway -.

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for a tour in Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Europe 25 - Early Bird Savings

If you are planning ahead, why not take a look at our brand new 2025 departures across our range of European escapes? Book early and you could enjoy savings of up to £300 per couple on a wide range of holidays. With a limited number of discounted places available, make sure you don't miss out. Terms and conditions apply .

Scenic beauty, a fascinating artistic heritage and an epic history, all of this and more makes Europe a dream destination for curious travellers wanting a Europe guided tour. Lovely landscapes offer a diverse feast for the eyes, whether you head south to Spain and Italy ,  or east to Croatia and Romania or explore some of it's most beautiful islands such as Sicily, Sardinia or Malta . Alternatively, stay closer to home as you explore the French Riviera .

There are so many options and variety on our European tours. Discover the rich historical sites of Turkey - such as the legendary city of Troy or head to warmer climes to find beaches in all shapes and sizes, from dramatic and rugged to golden and idyllic. Then there’s Italy’s Tuscan hills , which are dotted with Cypress trees, while pastel-shaded houses cling precariously to the glorious  coastline of Amalfi . And if you want to reach really dizzy heights, a holiday to the Swiss Alps offers jaw-dropping views in every direction. There’s a long list of man-made wonders to consider when choosing your European tour, too. Italy is crammed with treasures from top to toe, with Rome’s Colosseum, the  Leaning Tower of Pisa and Florence’s Duomo for starters. The romance of France , and the magnificent Spain’s Alhambra Palace  will leave you utterly spellbound. And you’ll wonder how on earth Greece’s Meteora Monasteries were built on towering rocks in the 11th century. The chance to step back in time is never too far away wherever your travels take you, with well-preserved historic treasures around every corner. Delve into the seemingly endless alleyways in Malta , where the Knights of St John would have roamed in the 14th century. Or stroll through Italy’s myriad medieval villages, which stand to this day untouched by time. Ponder life back in 79AD when the well-to-do  city of Pompeii  was smothered in hot ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. And you can walk in gladiators’ footsteps in Roman amphitheatres scattered right across the land. Sightseeing aside, a wonderful way to experience your chosen European holiday hot spot is through its cuisine. A cheese fondue, Kalamata olives, nutty olive oil, sun-ripened tomatoes, fish freshly plucked from the sea, earthy truffles – each country, and each region boasts its own specialities. And nothing quite beats breaking bread with the locals, or drinking a glass of wine in the very vineyard where the grapes were grown.

Destinations in Europe

The Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey

Sitting astride two continents, a position that has given rise to a culture that reflects both East and West, our holiday packages to Turkey show a country where European aspirations mix comfortably with Asian traditions. With a heritage stretching farther back than the Byzantine Empire and even the Trojan War, the country we now know as Turkey has seen some of the most important events in all of human history.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, Bulgaria

With a beguiling blend of nature and history, you're guaranteed an unforgettable adventure in Bulgaria. The keen explorer simply cannot resist being helplessly drawn to the freshening sea breeze and miles of turquoise water characteristic of Bulgaria’s coast, and many cities feel the benefits of this refreshing ambiance.

Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia

An escorted tour to Croatia offers the opportunity to discover a country that has, in recent times, become one of the most popular destinations in Europe thanks to a rewarding mix of sublime scenery and towns and cities that are positively brimming with history.

Tree silhouette , Northern Lights, Finland

From winter magic to irresistible summers; wild beauty to contemporary culture, you can expect vitality and excitement whenever during the year you visit Finland. Known as Suomi to the locals, Finland’s scenic landscapes are nothing short of extraordinary; whether you fancy photographing your way around fabulous parks or taking in beautiful coastline dotted with islands, we're sure you'll be able to indulge your nature-loving side.

Colourful clock tower in St. Tropez, France

France is a fantastic place for a holiday. Everywhere you go, there’s something new and exciting to experience. Here no two regions are the same, and whether you prefer captivating countryside chateaus or stylish seaside resorts, you're all but guaranteed a good time. Plus, there’s the added benefit of not having too long a journey; at its shortest, France lies just 20 miles off the coast of Kent and is easily accessible using all major transport methods.

Ancient ruins in Greece

Widely regarded as the birthplace of Western civilisation, Greece is an enticing destination for culture vultures and history buffs (though if you're happier taking in beautiful landscapes and exploring new places, you won’t miss out!). An array of archaeological gems offers much insight into this country’s vast and ancient heritage.

Amalfi coastline Italy

If you’re looking for a holiday packed with adventure, Italy is where you should go. A land of warmth and beauty, Italy is the place for fine art, fine food and fine living – a toast to the heritage of Europe’s favourite (and only!) boot-shaped country! Escorted tours of Italy with Travelsphere are an excellent way to make the most of this enchanting destination.

Church building in Vilnius, Lithuania

If you want to be enchanted on your holidays, Lithuania is the place to go. Tradition and folklore are deeply ingrained into Lithuanian culture; here, songs, stories and tales only serve to enhance the quietly eccentric vibe that abounds within this beautiful country.

Lake and mountain range in Austria

The stuff of fairy tales, Austria is famously beautiful. Characterized by mountain villages, baroque architecture, Imperial history and rugged Alpine terrain, no other country waltzes so elegantly between the urban and the rural mode of life.

Small boat cruising along a German river, Germany

A country where medieval architecture meets the modernity of today’s world, Germany is where fairy-tales come to life. Here treats and temptations are abounding in the form of soul-stirring scenery, spirit-lifting culture and much more.

Hungarian Parliament building at night

The crowning jewel of Central Europe, Hungary is a truly awe-inspiring place to visit; studded with a mixture of architectural landmarks and grand neoclassical buildings, this is the place to be when it comes to enjoying a unique, enriching travel experience. There’s a prominent Turkish and Roman influence in the country’s culture – evident in the popularity of mineral spas – which only serves to make holidaymakers fall in love with it even more.

Waterfall Iceland

Defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields, Iceland is one of the world's most spectacular places. If you're a nature lover, there's no better place on the planet to admire breathtaking views and dramatic backdrops.

Sun shining in woods, England, UK

United Kingdom

There's a reason why we call the UK our very own green and pleasant land; boasting a unique heritage and unrivalled history, it's the envy of many other nations. From pulsing cities to stunning countryside, you’ll find a wide range of things to see and do here. The shared culture and distinct local flavours that contribute to the UK really must be seen to be believed.

Absolutely amazing trip - Travelsphere took care of everything while we sailed round exquisite islands finding hidden gems or places of historical interest at every stop. Highly recommend Charlotte Field

Europe Touring Holidays Frequently Asked Questions

Europe has an array of exciting destinations from Italy to Turkey to Croatia and many more, here's some good tours for you to choose from.

Italy has so much to offer from the colosseum to Pompeii to Venice – all locations you definitely won’t want to miss! To cover all these you will need to take the Grand Tour of Italy . 15 days exploring the country from Venice to Catania, Rome, Sorrento and Sicily on route!

Turkey tantalises the senses on our Treasures of Turkey holiday . You’ll go from the hustle and bustle of the grand bazaar to watching the sunset with wine in hand at Love valley, enjoying archaeological sites, mosques and hot springs along the way.

If the medieval era is your thing then our Discover Romania and enchanting Transylvania tour will be right up your street. You’ll visit Sibiu, with its 14th century Lutheran Cathedral. Go to Sighisoara, the birthplace of one of Transylvania's most notorious sons, Vlad the Impaler – the real-life inspiration for Dracula and of course you’ll stop off at Bran’s Castle itself! (better known as Dracula’s Castle) and visit a 300-year-old monastery – still home to several monks in Bucharest.

If island hopping is more your dream holiday then our Croatian Island hopping tour may float your boat. Travelling from Split to Solta and back again, on our luxury ship solely for our group! You’ll enjoy kayaking around the walls of Dubrovnik, swimming in secluded coves, bobbing around in an inflatable, and discovering interesting facts like ancient methods of air-conditioning, all accompanied by laughter and cheerful chatter of your shipmates!

There is so much to see and enjoy across Europe from Germany’s architecture, to Frances artistic attractions and an array of historical sites in Italy.

Key attractions not to be missed on your tours are:

Italy – The Colosseum, built in AD 70-80 using travertine, limestone and volcanic rock, seating over 80,000 spectators, it was most famously known for its gladiator fights but it was also the arena for re-enactments of famous battles and executions. More remarkably, it was also the set for simulated sea battles! The arena would be filled with water so vessels could float in during the shows and drained rapidly afterwards. Equally as interesting is the engineering behind this theatre. It had a retractable awning to protect its spectators from the bad weather! Also hidden beneath the colosseum was a warren of tunnels and cells which held the gladiators and animals captive before they were sent to fight.

Another site not to miss in Italy is Pompeii – a 440,000 square meter town that was tragically engulfed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Approximately 10 percent of the population died and the city was buried under lava and volcanic ash. The lava preserved the town which means you can walk the streets and see the well-preserved buildings such as the Lupanare (brothel), and thermopolium (the Roman equivalent of fast food).

France - The famous Eiffel Tower, at the centre of Champ de Mars in Paris, built to be the entrance to the World's Fair in1889.This world famous structure has not always been admired though, in fact Engineer Gustave Eiffel was greatly criticised by locals, calling it a monstrosity! Never did he or they imagine quite how successful and important a structure it would be today, with its 81 floors of exhibits, viewing decks, cafes and gift shops.

Venice – The floating city. A romantic location with over 118 islands connected by the canals that run through Venice. Grab a gondola and sit back, relax and take in the scenery.

Romania – Dracula’s Castle - Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic, horror novel Dracula may be imaginary, but the castle isn’t. It was the real life setting of the sinister novel and is located just outside of Brasov in Romania. Officially known as Bran Castle it includes all the weapons and armour that is mentioned in Bram’s book. As for the blood-sucker himself, Bram used Vlad the Impaler as his muse. A ruler who was notorious for brutal torture and demise of in excess of 10,000 people during his reign.

Turkey – Turkey has an array of wonders to offer from Mosques to palaces, to hot springs and the famous bazaars

There is so much delicious food to be tasted across Europe and such a variety from one country to another. From delightful seafood in Portugal , Greece and Croatia to perfect pasta dishes in Italy and world-famous desserts in Austria.

While in Romania you can try stuffed cabbage rolls and in Turkey , anyone with a sweet tooth must try the ancient, traditional pastry dessert of baklava.

There really is something for everyone.

Certares to Fuel FTI Tech Overhaul with Takeover, $130 Million Investment

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 1:59 PM EDT

A leading travel and tourism investment firm acquires the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Certares , a travel and tourism investment firm, led a consortium that acquired FTI Group , the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

This deal ends a restructuring begun in September to strengthen FTI’s finances.

The consortium will own all of the share capital, and FTI will get about $130 million (€125 million) to funnel into its digital transformation and growth.

“Certares’ extensive industry experience and the new capital funding position FTI for exceptional growth,” said Karl Markgraf, CEO of the FTI Group.

Certares holds stakes in a range of travel companies like G Adventures, AmaWaterways and American Express Global Business Travel. The company and another private equity firm also own a majority stake in Hertz and it acquired several hotels in the last year. Certares founder and senior managing director Greg O’Hara became the chair of the World Travel & Tourism Council in November.

Munich-based FTI Group has 120 subsidiaries in German speaking markets, the Netherlands, UK, France, and other destinations.

The group had 6 million customers as of 2022, the latest figures available. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding to be a launch partner with Saudi Arabia for increased multi-day tours in the Middle East.

Competitors to FTI include the giant TUI Group, DER Touristik, Kuoni, and Hotelplan.

Correction: This article has been updated to note that Certares owns a majority stake in Hertz with another private equity firm. An earlier version of this article also said that Certares owns a stake in Tripadvisor – its stake is in Liberty Tripadvisor.
