Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Diane Du Plessis

Safari Travel Planner

As long as you practice basic safety awareness and avoid lonely stretches of deserted beach, especially at night, Zanzibar and the other Indian Ocean islands of Pemba and Mafia are probably the most alluring prospect for solo travellers going it alone. Exploring the northern safari circuit is saf e and with the large number of safari companies and tour operators focusing on this region there is an abundance of information and plenty of opportunity for solo travellers to explore the iconic parks of Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Mount Kilimanjaro.

A different perspective of Mount Meru

Solo travellers can tackle any and all of Tanzania’s parks and highlights, although it’s generally advantageous to join a group for wildlife safaris and/or treks up Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. There is a definite safety advantage, but going in a group can also be a significant cost-saver, as well as offering an opportunity to meet other like-minded travellers and make new friends.

Volunteering is a great way to travel for solo tourists

For those solo-travellers who really want to go it alone, destinations like Zanzibar and the other Indian Ocean islands are an attractive proposition. For those with time on their hands and wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the country as well as give back, volunteering with a local Tanzanian non-profit to contribute to their community development or conservation work can give a real sense of purpose and a feeling of satisfaction to your solo travel adventures.

‘Volunteer-ism’ (volunteer tourism) and more purposeful travel are becoming increasingly popular with an growing number of volunteer opportunities emerging for solo travellers across Tanzania.

Travel Tips

Arusha may not be safe for solo travellers

When traveling alone, it’s always important to stay vigilant and attentive to your valuables. Don’t flaunt your wealth or tempt fate. Solo travel in Tanzania is safe provided you follow a few simple rules… First, safety in numbers at night: make sure to team up after sundown. Joining small group tours (maximum six people) with a good guide not only provides a temporary safety benefit, but also helps to keep costs more manageable when compared to exclusive tours and private guides. Moving around in groups at night is especially important for solo female travellers, as is dressing somewhat modestly to avoid drawing unwanted attention to yourself.

Second, it is safest to travel by taxi. In major cities like Arusha or Stone Town, ask the hotel or guesthouse staff to recommend a reputable taxi that will get you safely to your destination. Having a local Tanzanian staff member help to negotiate the price before getting in the vehicle is also highly recommended. Third, while it is important to always be polite, don’t leave anything to misinterpretation. Tanzania is known for its jovial attitudes and unrelenting street vendors, but if someone pushes things too far or makes you feel uncomfortable, then it’s okay to be direct and tell them to leave you alone, especially if you’re on your own.

Where To Stay in Tanzania

Best time to visit tanzania, airports in tanzania, how long do i need, map of tanzania, plan a tanzania trip, related posts.

This Tanzania solo travel guide was written by Adeola Adeshina, Founder of AdeAfrica.com .

Is Tanzania safe? Yes! Tanzania has been rated numerous times as the safest African country to visit. Especially for solo female travellers. Though no country is 100% safe, Tanzania is one of the safer African countries. If you’re in the capital Dar Es Salaam, it’s best practice to always walk with a purpose (don’t look like a tourist or lost).

If you are lost always go into a shop to ask for directions rather than strangers on the street. As a solo female traveller, you should also be mindful of your things, whether that’s your bag at a restaurant or drinks at a bar, never leave your things unattended.

Is Tanzania safe for solo female travellers? If you’re in more touristy towns such as Moshi and Arusha or the island of Zanzibar the locals here are accustomed to foreigners and are very welcoming. Feel free to stop and ask for directions if you need them as most locals in this area do have a better level of English.

Overall the Tanzanians are incredibly friendly and will go out of their way to help you. Knowing Swahili will be helpful! Though if you’re not able to, there will be someone around who will speak English. To meet others, stay in a hostel.

I’ve found that staying in hostels really helped me to meet new people and go on adventures together and Dakar was no different. With so many cheap hostels around, it’s more than worth a try.

You could also take a tour. There are so many experiences and tours in Tanzania, especially in Moshi and Arusha which are a great way to also meet fellow wanderlusters and who knows. They may even be able to share with you some hidden gems in the country. Or join some clubs.

Now I didn’t personally use this method, but I did hear from other travellers that this is a good way to meet people. Using sites like Facebook and joining groups is a great way to get the ball rolling.

* Before you solo travel Tanzania, check what paperwork or visas are required for Tanzania .

Tanzania is a very relaxed and liberal country but is still an Islamic country so modesty should be taken into consideration.

As Tanzania is an Islamic country, its toilets often look different. Some places have squatting toilets whilst others have normal toilets but it’s very hard to find toilet paper. This is because they often use a hose in the stall to clean themselves rather than toilet paper. I recommend trying it out for a new experience but also keeping some pocket tissues to hand too.

If you plan to stay in the country for a long time, it may be useful for you to get a sim card, these can easily be bought in phone shops. Public WiFi is not really common. Though some upscale restaurants do have WiFi, it may be safer as a solo female traveller to stay connected on your go throughout the city too.

Volunteering in Tanzania

If you are thinking of volunteering in Tanzania, Global Work & Travel helps you to organise volunteer opportunities in Tanzania and the rest of the world. Experience volunteering in Zanzibar and learn about the communities of this stunning island or join a Tanzania volunteer experience to immerse yourself in the African community.

Their placements are ideal for solos and include all the support you need for a life-changing adventure. * Save £100/$100/€100 with the code ‘GatG.’

Tanzania, is a popular tourist destination for animal lovers. But the country has much more to offer than the big 5! Tanzania is situated in East Africa. Its neighbouring countries are Burundi ,  the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) ,  Kenya ,  Malawi ,  Mozambique ,  Rwanda ,  Uganda  and  Zambia and is a country that will forever remain in your heart after visiting.

Dar Es Salaam

Dar, es Salaam, is one of the capitals of  Tanzania  and is often overlooked as a possible tourist destination as it’s overshadowed by Kilimanjaro and the plethora of safaris the country has to offer. This is understandable as Tanzania is truly amazing!  Click here to read more about Tanzania.

But Dar Es Salaam has its own unique twang. With bustling streets, huge markets, and multicultural hubs, it’s the perfect place to visit for big-city lovers. So here are my top 5 must-see places in Dar Es Salaam.

The museums

Both the National Village Museum and National Museum were my highlights in the city. These places are great places to learn about how Tanzanians were before the Arabic and transatlantic slave trade lived and governed themselves.

The National Museum is home to numerous bones and other fossilised remains, including a cast of one family’s footprint trail left in volcanic ash over 3.5 million years ago. From fossils and bones to carvings and statues. It also has a collection on the history of the slave trade and colonialism, as well as a number of cars that belonged to the country’s first president.

The Village Museum is a replica of many pre-colonial Tanzanian homes belonging to different some of the 120 different ethnic groups within the country.

Not only can you enter the homes but there are many information stations talking about the different ethnic groups, their traditional customs, crafts, and common household items. The museum also hosts Ngoma, tribal dances, and other cultural activities

Bagamayo City

Though a little further out of the capital (75 kilometres north). Bagamayo city was formerly a fishing village, the area has been home to Indian and Arab traders, the German colonial government, and Christian missionaries during its storied history. It is a place of considerable significance to world history, both as an entry point for Arab and European missionaries, explorers, and traders in East Africa.

Once an active slave-trading outpost and ivory and coconut trading port, Bagamoyo, Tanzania is now home to a landmark church, a German graveyard, a history museum, and a thriving sailboat industry.  Guided tours are recommended.

Visit the Beaches

Coco beach, also known as Oyster Bay, this beach is popular with both locals and tourists. With an abundance of tasty street food served here, sports and the occasional concert. If you’re heading to this beach make sure you check out New Maisha Club a popular nightclub on the beach.

Bongoyo or Mbudya Islands are also perfect places to go to relax. As they are located off of the coast of Dar Es Salaam, they are much quieter and are home to beautiful beaches, clear waters and amazing seafood. You can take a short boat ride here from many points along Dar es Salaam’s harbour.

The wood Carvers market

One of the other places to visit in Dar es Salaam is the Wood Carver's Market. I also enjoyed the Mwenge woodcarvers’ market as African art can be seen through these carvings. This is a great place to buy souvenirs as it’s home to a variety of products, but it is best known for its sculptures and wood carvings. Be sure to take a look around before purchasing so you know your options, and don’t be afraid to bargain.

The Kunduchi Wet ‘N’ Wild Water Park

This aquapark is located about 19 kilometres from the centre of town and is the largest water park in East and Central Africa. It’s a great place to go for families as it has over 30 water slides of varying heights, catering to both adults and young children. The park is also home to Tanzania’s only Go Kart track. Why not release your inner child at this park?

Tanzania Solo Travel

Home to Africa’s tallest mountain, this little town is one of the most visited parts of Tanzania by international tourists and it’s not hard to see why! Mount Kilimanjaro is actually also a dormant volcano and is the world's tallest free-standing mountain standing at nearly 6,00 feet!

This mountain though not as challenging as others should not be underestimated! Do ensure you adequately prepare for such a climb.

Besides the mountain, some other amazing things to do in Moshi include seeing the Kikuletwa Hotsprings. Located approximately 1.5 hours away from Moshi, Kikuletwa Hot Springs is one of Tanzania’s many hidden gems. This oasis is home to pleasant hot springs hidden away by large fig trees.

Marangu Village  is the place to go for a cultural experience. This place is where many Chagga tribes people call home. With a local museum and many historic caves here, you will learn the significance of this place in Tanzanian history. During your time here you will definitely meet friendly locals too so don’t be shy to try the local food.

A stone’s throw away from Moshi town centre lies the Materuni Waterfalls. A day tour will begin with a short hike to the waterfall where you can make a splash in the mountain water of Kilimanjaro and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding valleys.

Along the way, you’ll also get to experience the local life of the Chagga people and on the way back you’ll stop by a traditional ‘shamba’ (farm) to see how coffee is produced – from picking the bean to roasting and then drinking a tasty cup yourself!

Lake Chala is located just 1.5 hours away from Moshi on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, this tranquil location is one mighty fine example of how much natural beauty this country has to offer. Lake Chala is a crater lake caused by a volcanic eruption over three million years ago. Its beautiful blue lake and lush green foresty is home to a plethora of plant and animal life.

solo travel in Tanzania

A cheaper alternative to Mount Kilimanjaro is Mount Meru . Located in Arusha, Mout Meru stands at 4,566 meters it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and some climbers even consider it more a beautiful hike than Kilimanjaro. Due to its bountiful and diverse flora and fauna.

Arusha National Park is home to some amazing wildlife including zebras, elephants, hippos, buffalos, hyenas and giraffes. If you’re an animal lover then this park is definitely for you.

Another of the places to visit in Arusha is the National History Museum in Arusha is also known as the Old Boma museum which is home to a collection of historical artefacts. It’s a great starting point for history and culture lovers.

Tanzania Solo Travel

Stone Town is the most populous part of the island and has unique Arabic-influenced buildings, this town allows you to fully immerse yourself in the culture.

Zanzibar is a melting pot of different cultures and one of the reasons for this is due to Zanzibar’s dark past. Zanzibar was a major trading hub for slaves so visit the old slave market.

The slave trade was atrocious with hundreds of thousands of people being trafficked through Bagamoyo to be sold in Zanzibar, then shipped to the east or the west, with many passing to the UK. This market is a great place to learn more about this part of Tanzania's history.

solo travel in Tanzania

Prison Island

One of the things to do in Zanzibar is to visit Prison Island, about half an hour away from Stone Town. This island gets its name from its former use as it was used as a detention area for rebellious slaves and people with deadly diseases. It is a tourist attraction with one of the main draws being giant tortoises some tortoises calling this place home are nearly 200 years old!

Zanzibar is a popular destination and is world-renowned for its beaches. The beaches in Zanzibar are on another level. With crystal blue waters and exotic fruits. Beaches such as Jambiani, Matemwe and Bwejuu really offer it all to travellers looking to relax. Why not rent a room at a beach hotel and live your best life.

For all those animal lovers out there, the Jozani Forest is just for you. Why not visit and get up close to some amazing animals in this forest including the rare red colobus monkey.

Other places to visit in Zanzibar is the Palace Museum, commonly known as the Sultan’s Palace, The Palace Museum to some is the most historic building in Stone Town as it was built in the 19th and now displays artefacts of the past Sultan family.

Other Things To See in Tanzania

Tanzania has the wildest concentration of wildlife in the world so it’s no wonder why their national parks are so popular. From lions, and giraffes to elephants, this country has it all! Home to 12 National Parks and 13 Nature Reserves and almost 40 protected areas; Why not visit Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro or any other park to get a chance of seeing some amazing wildlife.

The great Serengeti Migration occurs in June or July, with thousands of gazelles, zebras and other animals brazing the Mara River, why not book a tour to watch these majestic creatures in action.

The Massai tribe are an ethnic group in Tanzania and Kenya. Known for their world-renowned jumping skills. Why not book a tour to learn more about their unique culture and watch them perform ceremonial dances and show off their jumping skills. Cultural cooking and beading classes are also offered too so do make sure you find a tour office to find out about these cultural excursions.

Most tours of Tanzania have an average of 12 people and there is no upper age limit. Once you book your trip you pay extra for any excursions you want to do when you’re there.

Go on a week long camping adventure, trek Mount Kilimanjaro, experience a safari in the Serengeti and then relax on a white sandy beach in Zanzibar. I have personally used G Adventures and recommend them as a solo female-friendly company. * Check rates and availability for G Adventures Tanzania tours

Due to the rise of tourism in the country, many cheaper accommodations are now available. An average night in a hostel will cost around $5 per person per night with 5-star hotels costing around $150 a night. For all accommodations in Tanzania, check the link below.

Tanzania is a great hub for Eco tourists as the country really does care about its environment. I’ve been to amazing open-top bars and restaurants where monkeys and birds casually join in on your conversation. Eco lodges are definitely a popular attraction here with many hosting themselves on big platforms such as booking.com and Airbnb.

If you are looking to book a safari; more than likely you’ll be offered a stay in an Eco lodge such as the Serengeti Wilderness Camp. Do it! I 100% know that the experiences at Eco lodges are life-changing.

Tanzania has a relatively good year climate all year-round but the best time to go is between June –  October during the dry season. The country hosts some beautiful weather during this time and is also when the Great Serengeti Migration happens.

During drier seasons (June and October) are the best times to try and climb mount Kilimanjaro. The weather chart below shows the monthly forecast in Dar Es Salaam from January to December to help you decide on the best time to go to Tanzania.

Tanzania has 29 international and domestic airports. If you are in the capitals, you most likely would be flying in and or out from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar Es Salaam or Msalato International Airport in Dodoma. Kilimanjaro Airport is the most commonly used airport by tourists and is situated in Moshi, a small town by Mt. Kilimanjaro.

If you are visiting Zanzibar; Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is the main airport on the island.

Tanzania has so much to see and do so it's not uncommon for tourists who come here to want to stay forever. I have personally visited the country 3 times (2 weeks at a time in different cities) and still don’t feel like I have fully seen all Tanzania has to offer!

Depending on your itinerary, I’d say 2-3 weeks is a good amount for excursions only. 4-5 days per excursion i.e. Safari or climbing mount Kilimanjaro. 3 days to explore the city you are in. A few more to travel to other cities or have day tours.

SOLO SAFARI IN TANZANIA

Tanzania safaris for solo traveler, solo traveler on safari.

Habitually, going on a safari has always been a high-priced past time for those who are looking to travel on their own but, today, many of the properties have realized that this is a growing market and, as such, they have started to cater more and more for solo travelers. On the whole, it is now possible to stay at many of the fly-in properties in the south and west of Tanzania and only be asked to pay a small supplement, rather than the traditional, double price.

Climb Kilimanjaro as a Solo

The main advantages of a solo Kilimanjaro climb are that you have total control over your route and walking pace and that there is no risk of having to abort a summit because a fellow hiker succumbs to altitude sickness or wants to turn back. Disadvantages are that the price per person will be relatively high. So if the economy is a concern we can work to tailor-make your trip to get the most for your money.

Tanzania Safari Solo Traveller

Tanzania safari solo traveller, or Tanzania safari single traveller is on the growth every other year, with more and more people opting to go for solo safaris in Tanzania. As long as you exercise basic safety awareness and avoid lonely deserted areas especially at night, Tanzania safari solo travellers are very safe to embark on an amazing Tanzania safari tour even when travelling alone, any time of the year. A Tanzania safari solo traveller, or a Tanzania safari single traveller can visit most if not even all of the safari destinations in Tanzania, including any of the many game reserves and national parks of Tanzania, as well as the stunning beach side in Zanzibar Island.

Whilst travelling solo in Tanzania to enjoy the various amazing Tanzania classic safari destinations and so many others, say hiking the Mount Kilimanjaro, there is a definite advantage of a significant cost-saving when going in a group or with more people on a safari, privately. For those solo Tanzania safari travellers with time on their hands, there are longer activities you may engage in, say volunteer-ism, where you get a deeper understanding of Tanzania and give back to her. Volunteer-ism for Tanzania safari single travellers with time on their hands has them joining non-profit organizations to contribute to their time and efforts to community development or conservation work. Volunteer-ism is basically volunteer tourism, which gives travelers a more purposeful travel experience, which is indeed becoming increasingly popular with solo travellers in Tanzania.

There are a number of Tanzania safari destinations that travellers, solo or single travellers in Tanzania can visit for very rewarding Tanzania safari experiences. The various Tanzania safari tour destinations that a Tanzania safari solo traveller can visit include;

The Northern safari circuit Parks

The northern safari circuit parks of Tanzania are the most visited Tanzania national parks. The northern safari circuit parks of Tanzania are located, like the name suggests, in the northern part of Tanzania with Arusha town as the hub and base for most of the Tanzania safaris in the north. The northern safari circuit parks of Tanzania include some of the prime Tanzania safari destinations including the famous Serengeti National Park famous for the great wildebeest migration , the African big five and stunning endless Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro Conservation Area which is famous for having the Ngorongoro Crater which is the largest inactive caldera in the world and with a vibrant array of wild animals including over 25000 animals and the African Big Five sightings, Tarangire National Park renowned for the huge elephant herds and towering baobab trees and birdlife, Lake Manyara National Park famous for the tree climbing lions, huge population of flamingos on Lake Manyara, as well as Arusha National Park which is the nearest Tanzania park and the Kilimanjaro Mountain which is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world.

Tanzania Safari Solo Traveller

The Southern safari circuit Parks

The southern safari circuit parks have the famous Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park which are the most sought after here, rewarding travellers with some of the most amazing game drives and have great lodges and camps perfect for even a Tanzania safari solo traveller.

The Western safari circuit parks

The reason that Tanzania safari solo travellers do look to visit on a Tanzania safari tour the western safari circuit parks is in order to visit the much sought after chimpanzees in both Mahale National park and Gombe Stream National Park. Tanzania safari solo travellers after experiencing the chimpanzees with chimpanzee tracking in Gombe Stream National Park experiences, you can take time to include the western safari circuit parks on their Tanzania safari packages.

Zanzibar Island

For Tanzania safari solo travellers after walking on fine white sand beaches and taking in a bit of sun can consider including the Zanzibar island on their Tanzania safari holidays and trust me you shall not regret. You shall get to visit and walk on some of the best beaches in Zanzibar, whilst staying in great Zanzibar hotels and resorts. Enjoy stunning sunset views while on a traditional dhow, walk on fine white sand beaches in Zanzibar say the Nungwi beach, do the Stone town tour, and so many other activities.

When travelling solo on a Tanzania safari, it is important that you consider taking extra precaution of your surroundings, and take care of your valuable items like watches and electronic gadgets like smart phones and cameras. Do not flaunt your wealth or worse, tempt fate for just like any other country out there, there are always thugs and likeminded people on the lookout for who to steal from. For your safety as a Tanzania safari solo travellers, basic and simple rules like moving in more numbers in the night and not alone is advised which you can do by having your driver guide go with you wherever it is you may want to. As for solo female travellers on Tanzania safari tours, dressing decently whilst going out is advised, as well as not move solo and in dark alleys at night is advised against.

Tanzania Safari Solo Traveller

When to go for solo Tanzania safaris

You can go for solo Tanzania safaris any time of the year, with the best time being the dry season when wild game viewing is more rewarding as they can easily be seen in almost one place, at the few waterholes still with water in the dry season as many animals in the park congregate to have a drink, with predators like lions and hyenas hunting down their prey unsuspectingly quenching their thirst and having a dip in the cool waters. The dry season is also a great time for a Tanzania safari traveller to visit as you shall be in the company of a number of other travellers touring Tanzania, and not be literally the only one during the wet season which has way fewer tourists in the parks and lodges. Irrespective of the season however, you are guaranteed of great animal views because all the animals in the various parks and game reserves of Tanzania are residents, meaning they can be seen anytime of the year.

Interested in a Tanzania safari but travelling solo? Do not be dismayed or afraid of embarking on one of the most rewarding Africa safari experience in Tanzania , which is the best place in Africa for amazing and thrilling Africa safari experiences especially for game drives and fine white sand beach holidays in Zanzibar Island. Take time to reach out to a Tanzania safari expert for an amazing Tanzania safari tour, even for a Tanzania safari solo traveller as you.

Tarangire national park, Tanzania

Why a safari in Tanzania is perfect for solo travellers

T he honeymooners in Ralph Lauren safari chic ask which national park I'm going to. Ngorongoro? Serengeti? Neither, I say, Tarangire. They look puzzled. Either it's second rate or so exclusive they've never heard of it. And on a chilly night in the arrivals hall at Tanzania's Kilimanjaro airport, I'm not sure which is correct.

Next morning at Arusha airstrip for my flight to Tarangire, an American couple argue at the counter about the price of a cappuccino – $4 – and when workers in the coffee plantations next door earn a dollar a day, it does seem a bit rich. Nonetheless, you feel faintly embarrassed. A German gay couple ask if I know the exchange rate between Tanzanian pounds and euros. It gets all the more perplexing when an Italian couple start cooing next to me. They're lovely, but I'm starting to realise I'm in couples hell. Everyone is with someone, mostly someone they're in love with. Evidently safaris aren't made for saddo single travellers like me. Am I going to feel like a freak?

Messenga is my rescuer. He's formal and hesitant when I land at Tarangire, as we play out the ritual of the rich tourist arriving on a private plane. It's a game neither of us is comfortable with, but as we head for Oliver's Camp in a Land Rover, I'm not yet aware of the stroke of luck I've had. The quality of your guide will make or break your safari. In South Africa and Botswana, I now realise, the guides I've had – colonial types in the great white hunter mould – were competent but unexceptional. They impress Europeans and Americans as they point out a marvel you'd never spot yourself. They are trained to seek what the customer wants (everyone asks for lions) then radio ahead and deliver.

Messenga is different. He grew up in a nearby Masai village and his knowledge of the landscape comes not from books but from a lifetime of observation and devotion to his environment. Am I being misty-eyed? Maybe. But as a solo traveller, you will spend six to eight hours a day alone with your guide, and finding one who keeps you engaged and excited is extraordinary.

Tarangire can, just about, do the "big five" – the lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo – although it can't compete with the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro's volcanic landscape. But in the dry season, the permanent water in the Tarangire river attracts huge numbers of migratory animals including herds of elephant, wildebeest, zebra, eland and oryx. For Messenga though, Tarangire is not about the big five but the "beautiful five" and (his favourites) the "ugly five".

As tourists head for the big game, they miss Tarangire's real treasure – it's 550 bird species. Lilac-breasted rollers are at the top of Messenga's list. They perch on high branches, ready to hunt, all over Tarangire. The yellow-and-green bee-eater, the bar-tailed trogon and two types of honeyguides make up the rest of the beautiful five.

Travelling solo with a guide gives you the chance to set your own pace. Leopards, schlepards, I think, as the other camp vehicles chase a rumoured sighting. Mostly we dawdle, catching the kudus and hartebeests, spotting a tawny eagle, and having a giggle as a herd of zebras cross our path. I stare and stare at the giraffes, in Tarangire more docile and approachable than any I've encountered. "Mr Patrick, would you like to move on?," Messenga asks. "No, I'm OK."

Oliver's Camp, Tanzania

We talk Tanzanian politics – a presidential election is looming. We talk safari park politics – the maintenance of wildlife reserves for rich, mostly white, tourists in a country where average incomes are just £350 a year and where pressure on land is intense. And we talk about the Masai, still holding on to their traditions.

On holiday alone, you almost automatically engage more. I learn how the country has largely avoided tribal clashes that wreck so many African nations. The ujamaa collectivism of Julius Nyerere, Tanzania's first president, did little for the economy but his legacy is a uniquely national rather than tribal identity across the country.

Evening meals are the dark night of the soul for the single traveller. Couples at every other table, when your only companion is a book. But Oliver's Camp is different. Meals are taken at a single long table, and my Come Dine With Me companions come straight from central casting. A French UN official on a break from the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a guy who was in charge of public health for San Francisco, doctors from North Carolina and four Seattle women in their 50s, resting after scaling Kilimanjaro. The manager of Oliver's Camp is a dead ringer for Julie Christie in the 1960s. Who needs romance?

Oliver's Camp is unfenced, a reminder of its exquisite exclusivity; it's the sole encampment within the 1,100 square mile park, permitted to exist only if animals are free to roam through it. A security guard walks you back to your tent, assuring you a lion is unlikely to pace past in the night. It's about the only time you wish you weren't alone.

But breakfast is your payoff. Silent, alone, a book lazily in hand, a fine cup of coffee, and giraffes lolloping past not more than a couple of hundred metres away. It's fantastically expensive. And worth it, at times like this.

Only once is the serenity shattered, when the next day I share a tour. "No, not that. Only want lions," barks the fat rude German when Messenga pauses for a lilac-breasted roller, while his oriental partner, at least 25 years his junior, looks on impassively. When we later find a lion, I want to feed him to it. Who needs company when you have a thousand square miles of safari park to yourself and almost the greatest concentration of wildlife on earth?

Anyone that is travelling alone or wishing to travel alone to Tanzania should feel 100% confident in doing so!

A Tanzania solo traveller safari is a very inclusive experience at its heart with the majority of camps and lodges being uber friendly and with very like-minded people working and staying these said camps or lodges.

The word safari in Swahili means "to journey", and we feel that there is no better example of a journey than that of the self-discovery experiences travelling by oneself in Tanzania can give you. In most of Tanzania and safari Africa you will be sharing your safari activities with up to 4 others from the camp or lodge you are staying at and will undoubtedly make long lasting friendships.

We would always encourage solo travellers to mix in a variety of experiences, like wildlife safaris of course, but also authentic Masai cultural experiences where possible. We say this because we have found that with all our Tanzania solo traveller guests it has been this combination of wildlife and local cultural deep and meaningful interactions that has really struck home and changed or greatly impacted them. Find out more info on solo travelling in Africa here.

Almost every safari country in Africa works for solo travellers although there are a few that excel in this particular area. Tanzania’s Southern Circuit of the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park work perfectly with a great mix of ecosystems and safari activities and almost all operate a shard safari activity format in camp.

The northern circuit of Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti can work just as well, though it can get quite pricey because of single supplements on many of the accommodations. It is in Tanzania where the richest cultural experiences are to be had and combine so effortlessly with traditional safari game viewing too putting it right up there for solo travel and we can plan some quite remarkable itineraries along these lines. Find out more info on Tanzania safaris here.

So much of travel to Tanzania and Africa and the type of experiences we want or need as individuals, is highly subjective to each individual person. For that reason, we do strongly recommend that at this point you get in touch for a “getting to know you” conversation with one of our team. We are absolute in our belief that this is the only way to achieve a truly Tailormade Africa Tanzania solo traveller experience ... for you.

A solo traveler to Tanzania on safari

A solo traveler to Tanzania on safari

Tanzania safari solo traveler: Tanzania trip solo or individual travelers are on the rise, and solo visitors can be seen and indulged in during Tanzania tours. As long as you opt to stay and enjoy the basic services, you will need to be aware that to enjoy the best safari experiences, which are so very interesting and wonderful, you will need to be aware that Herewith the Tanzania Solo Traveler, it means that average travelers or tourists can visit one or more destinations in Tanzania, and there are many destinations in Tanzania, including the Tanzania National Parks, the game reserves, and the wonderful as well as stunning safari beaches that are found in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

As you are traveling to Tanzania as a solo traveler, you will have the opportunity to participate in various wonderful safari destinations and very many available activities, among which is the mountain of Kilimanjaro. Tourists need to know that visiting the destination in a group saves you some costs as compared to a solo traveler, and this is very wonderful and interesting. Sole visitors to Tanzania can still engage in various activities that take much longer time, provided they have got enough time at their disposal.

Some of these activities include volunteering, where you will join a non-profit organization and engage in volunteer activities. By doing this, you are better understanding the Tanzania culture, which is very interesting. While in Tanzania, the solo traveler can engage in various excursions that are spread across the country, either on the northern circuit, the southern circuit, or the central, among others. Now let’s explore the best places that a solo traveler can explore while engaged in the Tanzania Safari Destination.

Exploring the northern circuit safari parks: Tanzania’s northern circuit offers some of the best safari destinations and is the best safari destination in the country. It offers all of the national parks that are prominent and have been outstanding in the tourism of Tanzania. The northern circuit route begins in the tourism city of Arusha, and the safari will take you to some of Tanzania’s best safari parks, including the Serengeti National Park, which is famous for having the largest herds of lions, and the Arusha National Park, which is close to Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain.

visit the western circuit national parks

visit the western circuit national parks

Exploring the western circuit national parks: the western circuit is also an important discovery that visitors, especially sole visitors, ought to explore while they are in Tanzania. This is the circuit where you will be able to see the chimpanzees in Lake Mahale and then the famous Gombe National Park. Seeing chimpanzees and engaging in chimpanzee tracking is a must for this safari experience, and this is extremely interesting and wonderful.

Explore the southern circuit as a solo traveler : The southern safari circuit parks include the famous Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park, which reward visitors with some of the most fantastic game drives and offer outstanding hotels and camps suitable for even a Tanzania safari solo traveler.

On your solo trip to Tanzania, explore the island of Zanzibar:   Tanzania safari solitary travelers who enjoy wandering on fine white sand beaches and basking in the sun might consider including the Zanzibar island on their Tanzania safari travels; trust me, you will not be disappointed, and you will be able to see and walk on some of Zanzibar’s beautiful beaches. Enjoy spectacular sunset views from a traditional dhow, walk on exquisite white sand beaches in Zanzibar, such as Nungwi Beach, take a Stone Town tour, and participate in a variety of other activities.

While going alone on a Tanzania safari, you should consider avoiding potential risks from natural variables as well as dealing with important items such as watches and technological devices such as modern cells and cameras. Try not to flaunt your wealth or, more regrettably, risk everything because, as in any other country, hooligans and similar people are constantly on the lookout for someone to rob.

For your safety as a Tanzania safari solo traveler, basic and uncomplicated ideas like traveling in additional numbers in the nighttime and not being the lone one are advised, which you can do by having your driving guide accompany you anywhere you may need to go. In terms of solitary female explorers in Tanzania, dressing decently while going out is suggested for single female explorers on Tanzania safari excursions, as is avoiding moving alone and in such a frame of mind around evening time.

Have your best solo Tanzania trip

Have your best solo Tanzania trip

When is the best time to go on a solo Tanzania trip?

Solo visitors are free to go to Tanzania for a solo trip or vista any time of the year. However, the best time is during the dry season when the wild game review is more profitable as it can undoubtedly be seen in one spot at a couple of waterholes still with water in the dry season as numerous creatures in the recreation area gather to have a beverage, with hunters like lions and hyenas chasing down their prey, accidentally extinguishing their thirst and taking a plunge in the cool waters.

The dry season is also an excellent time for a Tanzania safari voyager to come because you will be in the company of other explorers visiting Tanzania and will not be the only one during the wet season when there are significantly fewer visitors to the parks and cabins. Regardless of the time, you are guaranteed fantastic creature sightings because all of the wildlife in Tanzania’s many stops and game stores are residents, which means they should be visible at any time of year.

Traveling alone yet inspired by a Tanzania safari destination? Try not to be intimidated or scared of embarking on one of the most rewarding African safari experiences in Tanzania , which is the ideal place in Africa for amazing and exciting African safari encounters, notably wildlife drives and fine white sand ocean-side events on Zanzibar Island. Set aside some time to contact a Tanzania safari guide for an unforgettable Tanzania safari visit, especially if you are a Tanzania safari solo adventurer. Resting at the foot of Mount Meru, the sprawling city of Arusha is known as the safari capital of northern Tanzania. It serves as an excellent base from which to explore the remarkably scenic surrounding area which includes majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as the Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro National Parks

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park, situated within Tanzania’s spectacular Manyara Region, is an awe-inspiring national park comprising of granite ridges, river valleys, mixed vegetative landscapes, and free-roaming wildlife. During the annual dry season, the Tarangire River is a magnet for thirsty wildlife. Large herds of elephants and migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest, and eland gather and not surprisingly the predators follow. With lion being among the most commonly spotted animal, it is a rare day that a visitor does not spot this majestic animal prowling or grazing. Tarangire is also the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as oryx and gerenuk are seen regularly. This expansive area is also known for its spectacular baobab trees, its breathtaking views of the Masaai Steppe and the wondrous mountains to the south

Lake Magadi

Not to be confused with the Kenyan lake of the same name set only a hundred kilometers away, the Tanzanian Lake Magadi is an exquisite soda lake in the Ngororongo crater, named for the Swahili word for salt. This is a wonderful destination for nature photographers, a scene that changes exquisitely through the seasons, moving through lush greens into striking oranges and bright pinks. Along with the changes come captivating, changing groups of animals including rhino, eland and lion, as well as golden jackals who come to hunt the flamingos. The surrounding crater is filled with incredible other natural attractions and a much wider variety of wildlife

Northern Serengeti

Located between the Central Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve to the north, the Northern Serengeti is a remote African wildlife wonderland. The vast, rolling savannah of the Northern Serengeti, is known as the hub of the Great Migration . Wildlife can be seen along the banks of the Mara River and you can view the annual spectacle of the half-million migrating wildebeest. Commonly spotted wildlife include: a multitude of plains game such as buffalo, zebra, gazelles, impala, giraffe as well as lion and leopard. Nestled high on the jagged rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and shrouded in mist, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a stunning example of ecological and architectural harmony. The boulder-built buildings of the Lodge are camouflaged by indigenous creepers and linked by timber walkways that skirt ancient trees. Inside, guests are greeted by the hushed ambiance of a game-viewing hide and the ochre, rust, and charcoal imagery of a prehistoric cavern, decorated with Maasai iron spears, bright-beaded robes, and intricately-carved artifacts. The rooms, strung around the crater rim, are adorned with brass lamps, wildwood mirrors, and Maasai carvings, each featuring its own rock-enclosed balcony and uninterrupted views of the Crater below.

serengeti zebra

Serengeti Wilderness camp is set on a beautiful section of river with great views and resident game. The site is exceptional! Lion, leopard, cheetah, gazelle, impala, buffalo, baboon, and some great birds including pygmy falcon can all be spotted in the area. We are tucked away from other lodges and camps, without the disturbance of noise or other lights. It’s incredibly peaceful at night.

Comprising just ten spacious tents (all for The Sisterhood), the focus is on your comfort and enjoyment. There is nothing better than being lulled to sleep at night by the sounds of the bush, safely inside your well-appointed ‘safari bedroom’. The tents are en-suite with flushing toilets and a bush-shower. A private verandah offers a shady place to relax.

A large central dining tent complements our comfortable lounge tent which has a small reference library, maps, a charging station for cameras, and WIFI.

Our safari chef will prepare sumptuous meals for your enjoyment and in the evenings, offer a campfire around which The Sisterhood can enjoy sundowners and snacks, and share the day’s experiences.

Gorillas, Game Parks & Beaches

This was my first time in Africa & I was totally taken by this beautiful country, the breathtaking scenery & the so friendly, happy people. Every day was a different experience: beautiful Zanzibar beach, various tours, safari's, village, school & orphanage visits, seeing wild animals up close in their natural habitat was amazing, but the highlight has to be ' the mountain gorillas', this is an experience I will never forget. I will def' return to this wonderful country.

Tanzania Camping Safari Tour

Tanzania Camping Safari

The tour was exactly what we expected. It was early mornings, lots of time in vehicles searching for animals, and a lot of photography and amazing sights. The campsites were awesome, but make sure you are okay sleeping in tents with 3” foam mattresses (it wasn’t a problem for us, but you need to expect to rough it a bit). The guide, drivers, and cooks were amazing and incredibly helpful and kind.

Serengeti Trail Tour

Serengeti Trail

My husband and i really enjoyed the Serengeti Trail. Our tour guide, David, was brilliant. He was extremely knowledgable, very friendly and kept everyone organised. Everyone on the group got on really well and this made the trip even more enjoyable. The camps we stayed in were basic but exactly what we expected. The food was good although we would have liked to have tried some more traditional African dishes. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the tour was participatory and that we all got involved in setting up the camp, cooking and cleaning. this got everyone interacting and helped the group bond. The tour bus we were on for the week, was not the most comfortable ride. it was an old bus and was not in very good condition, with bits coming undone throughout the week. By the time our journey was over, some of the panels were held on by rope!! However, the driver, Alex, was a very good driver and ensured we were all kept safe. overall, our journey with intrepid into the Serengeti and to the Ngorongoro Crater was a totally amazing experience. There were many highlights and no low points. We would definitely travel with intrepid again.

Touring days may include full-day motorcoach excursions or extended periods of standing and walking during city tours, museum visits, and/or outdoor activities. Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karen Edwards , who blogs about her family's travels around the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Since 2000, I've visited 93 countries and 57 of them have been with my four children who are all under the age of 10.

I am a nurse by background, but I have been blogging about traveling with my husband and kids since 2014. I cover a lot of off-the-beaten-track destinations and write itineraries for places I've been to, explaining how they work for families with children.

Many popular family destinations tend to be overcrowded. They're usually the ones that get a lot of media exposure or are shown in viral videos on social media. In America, it'd be places like Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida, while for Europeans, it might be some of the Spanish resort areas.

Although my family and I have visited these places, we have always come away disappointed. They often lack educational experiences, feeling like pointless affairs.

I think traveling to underrated spots makes trips feel more exclusive and you can learn more about the cultures of the countries you visit — it also keeps you away from tourist traps.

We went on a safari tour in Tanzania

Our family visited Tanzania in 2019 in collaboration with a tourism brand. We were there for 12 days.

Our flights to the country were kind of expensive; we paid about $9,000 for our then-family of four, including a stop in Zanzibar at the end of the trip for a few days. However, overall, the entire trip didn't end up costing us that much.

We had some really unique experiences in Tanzania. We went to Mto Wa Mbu village , which is beneath a banana plantation, and we went on a safari tour in its Lake Manyara National Park .

Interestingly, Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where lions are known to climb trees. I remember seeing them sit in tall trees; it was quite unusual, but my kids really enjoyed how close they were to the animals.

Throughout our trip, we actually felt like we were experiencing life in Tanzania. Our campsite was on a river's edge in the depths of nature. It was nice not to feel surrounded by tourists.

My kids fell in love with Abu Dhabi's culture

Many people mistakenly believe that Dubai is a country, but in reality, it's a city in the United Arab Emirates, with Abu Dhabi being its capital.

My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2021 and lived there for 18 months. The city does have a lot of similarities to glitzy and glam Dubai , but you get a more down-to-earth experience.

There are amazing festivals in Abu Dhabi where they display their culture in different formats, whether that be through local food or crafts. It does feel authentic because it's usually mainly locals participating and organizing them.

The city is also 1.5 hours away from Al Ain, which sits at the foot of  Jebel Hafeet , one of the tallest mountains in the region. Along the way up, you'll find many ancient artifacts, such as beehive huts, which have been there for thousands of years. At the top, you can watch incredible sunsets.

Related stories

The city also has the Al Ain Oasis , which uses an ancient irrigation system. It has these beautiful paved pathways that look like cobbled streets.

My kids loved Abu Dhabi and are constantly asking me to go back — they really liked all the cultural celebrations.

We love Sri Lanka so much, we're building a villa there

In 2022, my family and I moved to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi. We thought we'd have more family time here, and it was going to be an affordable place to live.

We're building a family-friendly villa here that should be completed by August. The area where we are building has a lot of nice cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Overall, Sri Lanka is an amazing country that has so many diverse experiences. There are tea plantations, mountains, and beaches. As for wildlife, their national parks have loads of elephants and leopards.

On one occasion, we went on a safari boat tour to an isolated national park where we watched elephants swim across a lake and onto a tiny island. It was amazing.

The beaches in Sri Lanka are pristine. They have beautiful scenery with swaying coconut palm trees, clear water, and perfect waves. Our favorite is Kabalana Beach .

Because we're always on the beach, my children have learned how to surf. I think it's the most fun thing that we do on the weekends as a family.

The ski resorts and spas are amazing in Andorra

We visited Andorra in 2018 for about six days. It's a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain. It's a two-hour drive from Barcelona and three hours from Toulouse, France.

The city has a unique fusion of cultures, though I think Catalonian is the strongest influence. During our trip, my family and I toured many ancient churches.

We also went to some amazing spas and resorts in Andorra. The hotel and ski system there is really family-friendly.

During our visit to the Grandvalira ski resort , my daughter learned how to ski and my husband got to snowboard — the resort has a kindergarten at the foot of its mountain, where kids can play or ski.

Andorra also has amazing spa facilities that are suitable for families and are sectioned off for different age groups.

Our trip was in collaboration with Andorra's tourism board, but I feel like it wasn't overly expensive in comparison to some other places around the world.

I was treated like family in Macedonia

Macedonia is a Balkan country just north of Greece. I haven't been there with children, but I wouldn't have any issues taking my kids there.

It has many beautiful small villages and it's great for skiing too.

The country is also home to one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe named Lake Orchid, which borders Albania. There's this beautiful, small village on the lake that has charming restaurant and a lovely atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying good food.

I visited the country in 2008, and then again in 2012 with my then-boyfriend and now-husband.

The first time I visited, I went with two girlfriends, and we were backpackers. We arrived in the middle of the night by bus and had no idea what we were doing. The bus driver just made a call, and a stranger came and picked us up in his car — I thought I was going to die.

The opposite happened. He took us back to his home with his family, and we stayed there with them for a few days. We ended up extending the trip because he and his family were so amazing.

They didn't speak a word of English, and we couldn't speak a word of their language either. We'd just gesture at each other, and they'd give us food and red wine.

I just totally fell in love with them and their country.
