Misfits Announce Three 2023 Shows, Megadeth + AFI Among Opening Acts

Horror punk legends the Misfits have just announced three 2023 shows, featuring different special guests at each stop with Megadeth and AFI being among those tabbed to open.

The number of gigs now on the books equals the total amount of shows the band played across 2021 and 2022, meaning it's another rare chance for fans to catch one of punk's biggest acts of all time.

Since coming back in 2016 as the Original Misfits  (featuring original singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig and original bassist Jerry Only , as well as guitarists Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Acey Slade in addition to drummer Dave Lombardo ), the group has only performed 16 times, the first being at Riot Fest in Denver, Colorado.

The new dates are set for June 24 (Megadeth and Fear as support), July 8 ( The Gaslight Anthem and Fear as support) and July 15 (AFI and Fear as support) and you can view more details further down the page.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will have the first opportunity to grab tickets through an exclusive pre-sale that runs from March 22 at 10AM ET through March 23 at 10PM ET. The band indicates fans can use the password FIEND   to score early tickets at the corresponding ticket links to each show as listed below.

Look for the general on-sale to being on March 24 at 10AM local time at Live Nation .

Misfits has confirmed details of three new shows in the US to take place across the summer.

The punk legends will perform their first show of the year in Tampa, Florida, on June 24. They will then play two further dates in July, journeying to Newark, New Jersey, and Phoenix, Arizona.

Fear will open for the band across all dates, while Megadeth will join them in support in Tampa. The Gaslight Anthem will also perform in Newark, while AFI will complete the bill in Phoenix.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will be able to gain early access to tickets during an exclusive pre-sale. It will open at 10am ET on March 22 and run through 10pm ET on March 23. Tickets will then go on general sale at 10am local time on March 24 and will be available to purchase here .

The new shows follow Misfits ringing in the new year with a special New Year’s Eve concert in Las Vegas . That gig was the latest in a number of recent appearances – in October, the band celebrated Halloween in Dallas with special guests Alice Cooper and The Distillers, while it also headlined Chicago’s Riot Fest in September.

However, since singer Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only settled their decades-old feud to reunite the band’s classic members in 2016, the Original Misfits have only played a total of 14 shows in six years.

Danzig has suggested that the band will not embark on a more traditional tour, only playing gigs here and there. “I don’t think I’m going to tour anymore,” he told Revolver last year. “I’m just going to fly out to a show here or there. I’ll maybe be down to do some one-offs. But I just don’t see myself getting on a tour bus anymore…I think I’m done.”

"It's time!," Danzig enthused on social media. "You have heard the rumblings beneath the graves. Will you walk among us?"

Misfits are an American horror punk and heavy metal band who formed in 1997, and after a decade of hiatus from 1983 – 1995, have now reformed with a slightly revitalised line up of musicians.

The band now consists of Jerry Only on bass guitar and vocals, Dez Cadena playing guitar, and Eric Arce on the drums. Only is the sole remaining band member from the original line up, but the fresh and original playing techniques of the two newer members bring organic and exciting new elements to the trio’s sound. With eight studio albums under their belt, and four movie appearances, Misfits managed to travel into mainstream culture and popular media throughout their careers.

Although the band’s history of legal battles slightly dampens their career after Glenn Danzig filed a law suit against Only, their tours and musical talents are renowned for being exciting and original, and it hasn’t prevented the remainder of the band from continuing to perform. The band are known for their eccentric rock style make up that they sport on stage, and their enthusiastic high energy performances. As well as this, all of their performances use images inspired by horror or science fiction films, adding exciting elements of theatricality to the shows that they put on. Largely considered to be icons of their genre, the band have an eclectic following, from original fans from their early days, right up to young metalcore enthusiasts.

Live reviews

Original horror-punk pioneers The Misfits were THE epitome of the genre when they broke onto the scene back in 1977 when the Ramones were alive and kicking and punk was still an increasingly popular subculture. Misfits have been putting out dark, B-movie inspired records since the release their early-Eighties albums 'Walk Among Us' (1982) and 'Earth A.D./ Wolfsbood' (1983)- both considered cornerstones of the American post-hardcore movement. Founded by the growlingly powerfully-voiced singer/ songwriter Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only, the band has undergone some serious line-up changes in their time, with a rift between the two causing Danzig to quit in 1983 to go on to form other projects. After a long hiatus, Only has brought their unique brand of horror-punk-fun into the new decade, with a string of stadium and fetsival tour dates over the past few years.

As hardcore Misfits fans will know, that their live shows are always a theatrical, spikes 'n leather-laden frightfest, and an exhilaratingly unique experience. Despite having been going close to 40 years, and the possibility that their faces may now be a scarier sight before the skull make-up is applied, they continue to tour frequently- and their original, angst-ridden blend of dramatic murder tale lyrics and frantic guitar riffs, complemented by thunderous drumming, sounds very nearly just the same as when they played their songs the first time around. At any rate, Jerry Only's Misfits in 2014 put on a ghoulishly entertaining show.

New Jersey outfit Misfits can boast to being the pioneers of a genre when they emerged in the early 80s with the self described sound of horror punk. Heavily inspired by horror film themes and imagery, the band successfully worked these nuances into a stage show which quickly gained huge following in their homeland as well as across the pond in the UK. There were few bands creating a sound as extreme as Misfits yet still incorporating a real sense of showmanship.

This consistency is still evident today as Jerry Only and co step out onstage through the ominous spinning lights that are likened to prison towers or helicopters. The tone is very much set for opener 'The Devil's Rain' which threatens to lift the roof off the intimate venue with screeching riffs and deep bass notes that rumble through the room. The crowd naturally erupts in excitement and cheers as the group run through a setlist consisting of all eight studio albums. The horror influence is really evident on a finale of 'Skulls' and 'Die, Die My Darling' as the whole audience lifts their hands in unison and salutes the punk warriors.

Sadly Sound kick mislead on this concert. I was sceptical from the start bases on price and venue but was at least expecting a cover band. None of the band's listed for this were actually present. They were all a bunch of local rappers using the names of large bands. Everyone in my party was highly disappointed but found it comical at the same time.

This is the second time that Song kick has provided misleading information for concerts in my area. At least the first one they had the band's right just couldn't provide an accurate start time. I don't know if I will continue to use this app, if I do I will be doing my own research a little closer to verify all information is provided.

Misfits were awesome hammering out song after song in lightning like rythem played many early songs some from the graves era as well played some devils rain Miss graves and wish he was singing because only doesn't really sing well as a vocalist but he's very crowd friendly fez and Eric arcy walked out through the barricade to greet fans before the show in route to the stage while after the show Jerry only signed and took photos forever a really cool guy and that goes a long way in my book overall 4 of 5 stars

Awesome show!! First time at the Bronson Centre and it's a great venue. The Misfits are legends, and they certainly delivered: close to 2 hours of uninterrupted horror punk mayhem.

They kicked off the night by playing Static Age in full, before jumping into some classics. Then they delivered some Michael Graves era stuff, before ending with tracks off their newest Album.

The show ended with Halloween, which was a fitting end given that Halloween is coming up.

The Misfits show at the forum was incomparable to anything in this world. Their performance was dead on. The set list covered a wide variety with early songs such as She, and Bullet, as well many tunes from Walk Among Us, and Earth AD. Glenn and company seemed to get along well, and the show kept getting better as it progressed. I have listened to The Misfits for over 30 years, and am glad to have had this opportunity.

We all came to listen to great music, and that's exactly what we got. Overall, it was an incredible performance with incredible people and it was definitely not a night to forget.

My friends and I also really appreciated that the members of the band took the time after the concert to give signatures and even meet/talk to every fan who wanted to meet them. We would definitely see them again.

danielle-gonzalez-1’s profile image

TERRIBLE SOUND QUALITY AT VENUE. parking cost as much as my ticket. Band was pretty good but couldn’t hear it he lyrics at all. Part of it is Glenn’s age, bigger part is the sound system at prudential center. I would never go back to this venue after this experience.

roblong95’s profile image

Sorry but it just wasnt up to scratch. The vocals were a bit all over the place especially early on. Jerry Jr on guitar was totally going through the motions and the drums kept drowning it all out. Having said that everyone else seemed to be having a good tome. 2/5.

scottyscott1970’s profile image

I can't see them and have not listened to any post Danzig music since Danzig left. Just not the same. The Misfits had an original sound back in the 70's and 80's that truly shocked people. Totally loved that. Misfits now are just another metal band with a gimmick.

Ever since legendary Horror Punk band Misfits reunited with the vocalist Glenn Danzig in 2016, they have been playing a few concerts every year. They announced the first dates scheduled for 2023 that will happen in Florida, New Jersey and Arizona next June and July.

At those shows they will have as special guests Megadeth, Fear, AFI and The Gaslight Anthem.

The band’s current line-up has Glenn Danzig (Vocals), Jerry Only (Bass), Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankestein (Guitar), Acey Slade (Guitar) and Dave Lombardo (Drums).

Misfits 2023 tour dates

  • 15 – Phoenix, AZ – Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre (With AFI and Fear as special guests)

Even though the band usually play less than 10 concerts every year, more dates might be announced since they are usually more active close to Halloween time.

“The tour will give fans the rare opportunity to see the horror punk pioneers in their fiendish glory, live on stage as well as mark the first time the reunited Original Misfits have visited the states of Florida and Arizona, featuring the classic line-up of Original singer/songwriter Glenn Danzig and Original bassist Jerry Only with longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein,” The official statement of the band said about the shows.

Possible Misfits setlist

Since the band had not released new material with Glenn Danzig since the 80s, the setlist might be quite similar to the one the band performed during the last years. An example is the one from Aftershock Festival back in 2021.

MISFITS Announce Limited Run Of 2023 Shows

MISFITS , one of the most influential, genre-defining bands to emerge from North America, has announced a limited run of shows for 2023, kicking off on June 24 in Tampa at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre with MEGADETH , hitting the group's home turf of New Jersey at the Prudential Center in Newark on July 8 with fellow New Jersey natives THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM , followed by a performance at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on July 15 in Phoenix with AFI . All three dates will also have support from FEAR .

The tour will give fans the rare opportunity to see the horror punk pioneers in their fiendish glory, live on stage as well as mark the first time the MISFITS have visited the states of Florida and Arizona, featuring the classic lineup of original singer/songwriter Glenn Danzig and original bassist Jerry Only with longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein .

Get the first "stab" at tickets with the special Misfits Fiends only pre-sale on Wednesday, March 22 at 10 a.m. ET through Thursday, March 23 at 10 p.m. ET. Visit the ticket links for each show below and use password "FIEND" to walk among the very first to score tickets to the latest chapter in the MISFITS legacy of brutality.

June 24 - Tampa, FL @ MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre (with MEGADETH, FEAR) July 08 - Newark, NJ @ Prudential Center (with THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM, FEAR) July 15 - Phoenix, AZ @ Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre (with AFI, FEAR)

Last September, MISFITS headlined Riot Fest 2022 in Chicago, performing their landmark first album "Walk Among Us" in full for its 40th anniversary.

The initial comeback performance by MISFITS members Danzig , Only and Von Frankenstein took place at the 2016 Riot Fest . The estranged bandmates played together for the first time since 1983 and were backed by former SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo and guitarist Acey Slade .

Since then, the original lineup of the MISFITS has reunited for scattered dates, with the latest one taking place on October 29, 2022 at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas, Texas.

Prior to the Riot Fest concerts, Glenn , Jerry and Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein last performed together on October 29, 1983.

Three years ago, Danzig told Rolling Stone magazine that he was happy with the way the MISFITS shows have been going. "Shit, we sold out Madison Square Garden," he said. "As a matter of fact, we oversold it. Back in the day, all the bigwig promoters and record label people were, like, 'A punk band will never headline Madison Square Garden.' And, of course, we're the first punk band to headline there. And not only did we sell it out, we oversold it. So a big fuck you to all those assholes, who are probably selling hotdogs on Sixth Avenue."

The original MISFITS band broke up in 1983, and Only brought forth a new version of the MISFITS in 1995. Various members have come and gone, but Only , along with BLACK FLAG 's Dez Cadena , has kept some form of the MISFITS in the recording studio and on the road for most of the last two and half decades.

In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone , Only said about working with Danzig again: " Glenn is Glenn . We dealt with Glenn in the beginning and it's the same dealing with Glenn now. It doesn't change. It's just a different perspective. If we let Glenn be Glenn and do what we're supposed to do, it's gonna work. You don't argue with each other. I think we're over that. I think we're old enough now."

Asked what it was like keeping the MISFITS going for 20 years without Glenn , Only said: "There was always that hole. When Glenn split, there was always that feeling we were missing a component of what makes us what we are. And I'm sure the same goes on for him. In the other bands he was in, he's changed people left and right. When we play together, it's just us."

John Mellencamp reminds Savannah audiences why he is one of America's greatest songwriters

Editor's Note: Article has been updated with the correct name of keyboardist/accordianist Troye Kinnett.

If you lived in Indiana during the 1980s, nothing is more definitive of that decade than Larry Byrd, David Letterman, the movie “Hoosiers,” and John Mellencamp. Touchstones of the time, they made it tangibly cooler to tell people you were from "The Crossroads of America."

But growing up in a small farming community, the songs and success of John Mellencamp were what hit differently. Though too young to catch a concert in the glory days of his biggest hits, my hog-raising and tractor-driving older cousins, uncles and grandfather had an affinity for Mellencamp. He made us all feel seen.

His advocacy work with Farm Aid beginning in the mid-1980s came at a time when nearly all my family struggled to keep their livelihoods. Mellencamp understood. Afterall, he was from Seymour, Indiana, just down the road. He was one of us.

On Tuesday, April 23, John Mellencamp concluded his two-month, 27-city “Live And In Person Tour” at the Johnny Mercer Theater in Savannah. And I knew this time, I had to hear him.

Streams of fans, mostly Baby Boomers and GenX-ers, poured through security. The mood was lively, happy, lots of hugs and smiling while waiting to pass into the building. One of the venue’s house photographers revealed that all but maybe a dozen of the theater’s 2,500 seats sold. Tonight’s show was a near sellout.

In lieu of an opening act, a 25-minute montage kicked things off promptly at 8 p.m. Moments from black-and-white classics ― “The Misfits,” “Giant,” “Grapes of Wrath,” “Hud,” and “Streetcar Named Desire” ― cast a mood of reflective nostalgia in stark contrast to the night’s first rocker, where Mellencamp snarled a chorus in characteristic rasp, “I ain’t got no friends.” Then the ensemble went immediately into edgy hit “Paper and Fire.” The audience was ablaze, standing and singing along.

And Mellencamp, clad in navy coveralls, his outfit of choice these days, sang full throttle, gesticulated with his guitar, and moved with palpable presence. At age 72, this man just keeps rocking. And I wished dearly my grandfather could stand with me watching our own Indiana boy “who’d done good.”

Toward the middle of the show, he broke away from the band and perched on the edge of the stage with acoustic guitar and harmonica. Always true to his convictions, he spoke about the past decade’s alarming increase in homelessness across the nation then shared a story about a barefoot girl on the street in Portland with whom he’d had a brief conversation.

When Mellencamp offered a $100 bill, she quickly grabbed it and ran, calling out “I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers,” harkening immediately back to the night’s earlier film montage which included the same line from “Streetcar Named Desire.”

All of that to set up his song “The Eyes of Portland” with focused chorus, “all of these homeless/where do they come from/in this land of plenty/where nothing gets done/to help those who are empty and unable to run/your tears and prayers won’t help the homeless.”

Another evening standout, revealing Mellencamp’s depth and reverence, included a piece more like performance art. Long-time bandmember and violinist, Lisa Germano, introduced a spoken-word version of the song “The Real Life” from Mellencamp’s 1987 release “Lonesome Jubilee.” She explained how John had been close with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward for many years, and he’d asked Joanne to read his lyrics over a musical arrangement. And so, Germano and keyboardist and accordion player, Troye Kinnett, wove a stirring duet beneath a recording of Woodward’s haunting voice.

Soon after, the band was back onstage with the audience dancing and singing to Mellencamp’s rally cry “Rain on the Scarecrow.” To be sure, this was a banger among my family in the ‘80s and beyond, and I remember my cousins cranking the boombox in the pole barn when it was on the radio. The night’s live, extended performance did not disappoint.

A little later when he introduced his band, he brought out his 29-year-old son, Hud, with whom he briefly hammed it up as the audience applauded.

The nuances of the evening were beginning to come together. The opening film montage with paralleling iconic script lines, then Paul Newman as the star of 1963 classic “Hud,” and Mellencamp’s own working class coveralls—all a way to honor many of the things and people whom John Mellencamp not only loves but who also have helped shape who he is. Don’t be fooled by all the F-bombs he may drop during a performance. At the heart of it, Mellencamp is a thoughtful, deeply artistic, and caring person.

The night concluded with songs “Cherry Bomb” and “Hurt So Good,” which had the audience once more on their feet and singing along.

Mellencamp’s politics might not resonate with everyone, but the man writes catchy, heartfelt songs and to this day, delivers them with fierce conviction alongside luminaries Woody Guthrie, John Prine and Johnny Cash. When you have an opportunity to see John Mellencamp, you must. He simply is one of America’s greatest songwriters.

The Grand Slams, ATP and WTA all want to control tennis. Do they have the power?

A grand struggle for power lies at the heart of every tennis match. Right now, it’s also at the heart of the sport itself.

Here at the Madrid Open, the moment that had all the insiders buzzing happened earlier this week, not on a dusty red court, but in the players’ lounge.

There, in plain sight — not cloistered in an office or luxury suite — the de facto leaders of the two competing visions for the future of tennis sat just a few feet from each other, making their cases to whomever they could get to listen: players and agents; tournament directors and owners.

On one side is the proposal from the Grand Slams for a streamlined elite tennis tour . On the other is the push f rom the existing ATP and WTA tours to maintain something like the status quo, only more of it, with one more big tournament and some more money, thanks to a significant investment from Saudi Arabia .

As the leaders of the biggest tournaments go back and forth with their counterparts about who controls tennis moving forward, there is an odd truth that neither side wants to talk about: what ultimately happens, and who ultimately ends up holding the power, isn’t really up to them.

In reality, the two camps are staging a kind of beauty contest, whose judges are also in two camps.

One: a handful of executives and organizations who control the biggest tournaments outside the four Grand Slams of Wimbledon and the U.S., French and Australian Opens. Two: a couple of dozen players whose participation drives the sport.

That’s why Craig Tiley, the chief executive of Tennis Australia and one of the prime movers for the Grand Slams’ effort to create an elite premium tour, arrived early in Madrid to meet with players and the managers, lawyers and agents who represent them, knowing full well how badly many of them want reform , especially when it comes to the length of their schedule.

It let him impress on them that what the leader of the ATP tour, Andrea Gaudenzi, has been pushing moves them further away from what they want — although, much of what Tiley was discussing wasn’t about the premium tour, but how an additional tournament would mess up their off-seasons and wreck his Australian season of tennis.

They are the two men sitting 30 feet apart that got people’s attention.

For his part, Gaudenzi, an Italian former tennis pro, held his board meetings, ploughing ahead with the process of adding that additional tournament — and likely the Saudi money — to the tour coffers.

Polite and decorous as it might look on the surface, tennis is a brutal sport, and so, too, is the business of running it.

the misfits tour 2023

Two days later, despite Tiley’s efforts, word was spreading via an Italian tennis website that the ATP had reached a deal with Saudi Arabia to hold another mandatory top-level event that will start the season in the coming years. That would threaten the viability of Australian Open tuneups in Australia and New Zealand and the United Cup, a mixed event, also in Australia, that the ATP organizes with Tiley’s Tennis Australia and the WTA. It offers $10million (£8m) in prize money, making it one of the biggest pay weeks for female players.

By late afternoon, the ATP had put out a message on X, formerly Twitter, that it had not made any decision on the tournament. Final bids for the event were due Wednesday. “We would like to clarify that these reports are inaccurate,” the ATP stated. “No decisions have been made and any updates will be communicated at the appropriate time.”

Welcome to the corridors of tennis power: a fractured hall of mirrors where nothing is quite as it seems.

More prize money, less tennis, equal pay: Grand Slams launch premium tour offensive

As in most sports, there are three forces which drive tennis: money, fame, and inertia, and they are pretty evenly divided among the players and the eight entities that run the sport.

The Grand Slams and the nine largest other tournaments which aren’t Grand Slams, known as the “Masters 1000s”, basically control the money, accounting for something like 80 per cent or more of the revenues in tennis by some estimates. It’s hard to calculate, since plenty of tournaments do not make their finances public, not even with players.

Players control most of the fame. They are the stars of the show, the boldface names who pull fans into the sport, their images plastered onto billboards in major cities all across the world throughout the year.

“Try having a tournament without players,” Stefano Vukov, coach to women’s world No 4 Elena Rybakina, said Friday afternoon. “You can’t do it. I promise you.”

the misfits tour 2023

At this Madrid Open, the players have been trying to go about their business while confused about what the future holds.

Once they get locked into an important event, they try to actively ignore everything that isn’t their next match. Some also need to be cautious because of the incestuous nature of the sport: their agents often work for companies that own tournaments. Some players who delve into the politics of tennis soon pull back if they sense it is distracting them from trying to win.

Tennis’ top women say the sport is broken. This is why

Iga Swiatek, the women’s world No 1, ticks all three of those boxes, since she is represented by the sports and entertainment conglomerate IMG, which owns the tournament currently ongoing in the Spanish capital and also the Miami Open, played recently in the U.S. Still, she could not hide her ongoing frustration at how the sport operates, with only a limited formal role for player input.

“I’ve been really involved, last year, especially with all this, politics and sports a little bit, and I feel now I need to kind of focus on myself,” Swiatek said after winning her opening match Thursday night. “But I want to speak out when I feel like it’s important and it’s going to do something.”

“I just really, really hope that it’s going to change and we will have a say, or at least we’re going to be informed much, much earlier of changes.”

Ons Jabeur, the two-time Wimbledon finalist, sounded a similar note about the ongoing battle.

“For me as a player, it’s like a movie,” Jabeur said, following her opening triumph. “I’m watching them fighting it out there. But I feel like whatever is going to happen, the players need to be involved.”

the misfits tour 2023

The WTA, the men’s game’s ATP — and to a lesser extent the International Tennis Federation — have inertia on their side.

They license and sanction more than 100 other tournaments around the Grand Slams and also help sell some of the media and sponsorship for the tour. They set up a schedule that largely guarantees a professional tennis match is taking place somewhere nearly every day for roughly 11 months. They collect the revenue: media payments, sponsorships and other licensing agreements. Players end up with roughly a quarter of it, with the rest going to overheads and administration.

All that makes the tours seem like the sport’s alpha dogs, which is just what they want.

It might seem like that means they have the power, but the tours don’t control the players. The players are independent contractors, free to play tennis wherever they want if they can find someone to pay them — the way some of the world’s top golfers found a willing partner in Saudi Arabia .

That is especially true at the moment, because the Grand Slams have yet to renew the agreement that obligates them to organize their draws based on the ATP and WTA rankings, which the tours oversee. For now, it’s a detail because Grand Slams are still acting as though the deal is still in place. But there is an implicit threat in their refusal to sign a new agreement; a message that they could use some other rankings systems that ignore the tours, which would allow players into their tournaments whether the tours like it or not.

Still, a great tennis player does not have many alternatives for making millions of dollars from playing the sport without the platform and the competitions the tours offer.

Saudi Arabia's new $1billion proposal and the battle to control tennis

It also might seem like the tours have total control over the tournaments to which they have sold licenses, granting them the ability to operate as official events. But the only important tournaments they actually own are the season-ending tour finals.

They also have the least amount of control over the most important and lucrative tournaments on their tours, those Masters 1000 events that function as the sport’s gilded breakaway republic: Indian Wells, Miami and Cincinnati in the U.S., Monte Carlo in the south of France, Madrid, Rome in Italy, Montreal and Toronto in Canada, China’s Shanghai and Paris.

the misfits tour 2023

Many of these are storied events, such as Indian Wells, known as the “Fifth Slam ”, and the Italian Open. Those tournaments got together and decided to sell their media rights as a separate package, through a separate company called ATP Media. The actual ATP? It has about a 10 per cent stake in that company. In most realms, the people who control the most money hold the most power, and here and overall, tennis is no different.

This is why the battle to control the sport has become a beauty contest between rival proposals from the Grand Slams and the existing tours about how to fix tennis .

Those Masters 1000 events already have some financial separation from the existing tours, though lawyers would have their work cut out trying to undo existing contracts. And pro tennis can’t exist without the best players, who can choose where to take their power and who to bless with it.

Those are each contestant’s top attributes.

What exactly do the judges in this contest want?

Beyond the dreams of winning the biggest titles, most players who have the levels required to play an event such as the Madrid Open want two basic things from their tennis careers. They want an opportunity to make a good living and they want to be able to play in the events they grew up watching on television.

Those are mostly the Grand Slams, maybe their home country’s Masters 1000 if there is one, or the tournament that takes place closest to their hometown. Frances Tiafoe, who grew up in the U.S. state of Maryland, has said he only cares about two tournaments, the U.S. Open and the Citi Open in nearby Washington, D.C.; Swiatek doesn’t miss the WTA event in Poland’s capital Warsaw, her hometown.

In this light, the Masters 1000 tournaments want to be seen as premium events — if not on par with the Grand Slams, then as close as possible to them.

the misfits tour 2023

For the Grand Slams, the key to being able to create a premium tour may come down to convincing a critical mass of the Masters 1000s events to at least threaten to break with the existing tours.

Instead of being closely associated with a score of random tournaments everywhere from Antwerp in Belgium to Houston in Texas, they could be part of an elite group of events that includes Wimbledon, the most historic and important tournament in the sport. Implicit in that is the idea that tennis’ geographic reach is an albatross rather than a calling card, which many figures in all four groups — and many more fans — would dispute.

The Grand Slams will also have to convince the players, especially the stars who hold the most sway over everyone else, they are better off playing on a premium tour which the Slams say will pay them more money for doing less work.

The concept, according to the proposal from the Grand Slams, will double prize money for the top 300 men and nearly quadruple prize money for the top 300 women, who will from inception receive the same prize money as the men on the premium tour, instead of waiting until 2027 for that to happen under the ATP and WTA.

Those players won’t have to spend the year chasing rankings points and feeling like they are losing ground every time they want to take a week or two off between more important events to rest or train. And they will get a six-to-eight-week off-season as well.

Lower-ranked players have been promised more money too, and if their tour is set up properly, with regional circuits and promotion and relegation, they will have to spend less on travel and get more clarity on how they can make the step up.

How to fix tennis

Where would that leave the existing ATP and WTA? Those organizations would likely have a role in helping to govern that premium tour and making sure money from it filters down to the smaller tournaments, on that so-called “Contender Tour”, for the players vying to make the big show and top players seeking extra matches and appearance fees.

the misfits tour 2023

For the tours, winning the beauty contest means convincing the Masters 1000s they don’t need the Grand Slams, that they already exist as a premium tour, and that being the highest quality events on the men’s and women’s tours is better than being the poor relations of the Grand Slams, especially given the litigation they would likely face if they tried to break away.

They have also dangled a windfall of roughly a billion dollars in front of the Masters 1000s and the players, which will arrive in full when they add an additional top-level event as soon as 2026, though it’s not clear they can deliver on that figure. Advocates for players say it’s more like $500m at the moment, and once it filters through the system, there won’t be much left over for them.

It’s a contest that should go on for a while, with moves and countermoves, back and forth, surges and lead changes.

Not unlike a tennis match.
