The Toktokkie – The Fastest Thing on Six Legs

Toktokkie

The toktokkie beetle is one of the best known of Namibia’s insects, with more than 200 species resident in the country, 20 of them living in the Namib Desert .

The name ‘toktokkie’ refers to this beetle’s habit of knocking its abdomen against the ground as a means of communicating it’s desirability to a mate, and each species of toktokkie has its own unique tapping language to avoid confusion. The official scientific name for these creatures is Tenebrionidae, and they are also known as darkling beetles, which refers to their preference for gloomy habitats.

Adaptations to the heat

Apart from their unusual love songs, darkling beetles have a number of other unique characteristics. Like many other creatures that call the Namib home, and particularly the desert-dwelling variety, these beetles have developed clever adaptations to make their life in this harsh environment a lot more comfortable. Thanks to their extra-long legs, the toktokkie beetles are among the fastest on earth reaching speeds of up to 90cm per second, which helps to avoid being scorched by the desert sand. These high speeds also generate a cooling breeze as the insect beetles along.

Their thick chitin shells also contribute to keeping body temperatures down and they have traded in their ability to fly in favour of a wing-borne cooling and hydrating system. They respirate through a hole located under their wings, which cannot be spread for flying. Instead, moisture from their exhaled breath is trapped under the wings and retrieved into their bodies when they ‘inhale’ again.

Finding water and food

After the heat, a lack of water is the next obstacle which all desert creatures must overcome – no problem for the toktokkies of the Namib. One species, the fog basking beetle, ventures onto the dunes at sunrise to get their daily quota. They achieve this by climbing up a dune and performing a headstand so that moisture from the morning fog can collect along the length of their back, condense, and trickle down to their mouths. While another species, the button beetle, foregoes the acrobatics and digs small trenches in the sand to do the collecting for them.

Food is no problem to these beetles as they survive quite happily on whatever the wind blows their way in the form of wind-blown plant known as detritus or beetle muesli.

One of the best ways to get to know these and other small interesting desert creatures is on a desert tour at Swakopmund, located about 280 km from Windhoek.

Rolling Stones announce 2024 tour openers: Tyler Childers, KALEO, more

The Rolling Stones have decided who will “Start Them Up” on tour this year.

However, unlike most tours, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are mixing things up and bringing different opening acts to each city they’re hitting on the spring and summer ‘The Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds.’

Just a few of the big names joining them include Gary Clark Jr. (April 28 in Houston), Joe Bonamassa (May 15 in Seattle), Tyler Childers (June 3 in Orlando), KALEO (June 11 in Philadelphia) and Lainey Wilson (June 30 in Chicago).

As for their MetLife Stadium gigs, pop-soul outfit Lawrence is slated to kick things off at their Sunday, May 26 concert ; no opener has been announced for the Thursday, May 23 show .

And if you’ve been on the fence about catching Mick, Keith and Ronnie live because you fear exorbitant ticket prices, we’re happy to report that some shows have cheaper seats available than one might imagine.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we found on tickets was just $21 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Yes, you read that right. Just $21. We couldn’t believe it either.

Other nights have seats starting anywhere from $44 to $109 before fees (excluding festival dates).

Curious how much tickets cost and who will be opening for the Stones at the show nearest you this year?

While we can’t guarantee we’ll give you what you want, we promise you’ll get what you need.

Our team has all the details you’re looking for and more about the Rolling Stones’ 2024 ‘Hackney Diamonds Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, opening acts and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

The musically diverse New Orleans Jazz Festival — they don’t do just jazz, contrary to popular belief — returns to the Big Easy on April 25-28 and May 2-5 next year.

At the two-weekend fest, Mick and co. will be joined by fellow Rock Hall of Famers Neil Young , Earth Wind and Fire , Heart , The Beach Boys and Foo Fighters .

Many of the big names joining the Stones on the road have quite a few more shows lined up this year.

For a clearer picture, here are all the Rolling Stones opening acts who are on tour these next few months.

This 16-concert run will be the group’s first official North American trek since 2019’s ‘No Filter Tour,’ which concluded two years later due to COVID-related postponements.

Here’s what the band played at their last run, courtesy of  Set List FM .

01.) “Street Fighting Man”

02.) “Let’s Spend the Night Together”

03.) “19th Nervous Breakdown”

04.) “Tumbling Dice”

05.) “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”

06.) “Living in a Ghost Town”

07.) “Start Me Up”

08.) “Honky Tonk Women”

09.) “Connection”

10.) “Slipping Away”

11.) “Miss You”

12.) “Midnight Rambler”

13.) “Paint It Black”

14.) “Sympathy for the Devil”

15.) “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”

16.) “Gimme Shelter”

17.) “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”

Most recently, the band surprised New Yorkers when they performed a set at  Racket  in the Meatpacking District with Lady Gaga.

You can find their seven-song set list from the October 2023 one-off show  here .

On Oct. 20, the Stones released their 26th American studio album,  “Hackney Diamonds,”  featuring special guests Paul McCartney, Elton John, Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder.

Comprised of 12 hard-rocking tracks that wouldn’t be out of place alongside their singalong stadium anthems of yore, “Diamonds” shows that Mick, Keith and Ronnie still have their sticky fingers on rock and roll’s pulse.

“We wouldn’t have put this album out if we didn’t really like it,” Jagger, 80, told Jimmy Fallon. “We must say that we are quite pleased with it. We’re not big-headed but we hope you like it.”

If you’re looking to sample the record, we suggest starting with the fierce lead track “Angry” and the wistful ballad “Dreamy Skies.”

Prefer to listen in full? You can find “Hackney Diamonds”  here .

No joke — the upcoming tour is sponsored by AARP.

Rather than shy away from their age, the legendary rockers are embracing their elder statesman status.

To give you a peek at who’s in the group these days, take a look below.

Mick Jagger   (80-years-old)   lead and backing vocals, harmonica, rhythm guitar, percussion, keyboards, bass guitar  (1962–present)

Keith Richards   (80-years-old)   rhythm and lead guitars, bass guitar, keyboards, percussion, backing and lead vocals  (1962–present)

Ronnie Wood   (76-years-old)   lead and rhythm guitars, bass guitar, backing vocals, pedal steel guitar  (1975–present)

Backing musicians include Chuck Leavell, Bernard Fowler, Matt Clifford, Darryl Jones, Tim Ries, Karl Denson, Chanelle Haynes and Steve Jordan.

Their longtime drummer Charlie Watts passed away in August 2021.

Many AARP card-carrying icons will take the stage this year and next.

Here are just five of our favorite acts you won’t want to miss live in the near future.

•  Neil Young

•  Bob Dylan with Robert Plant and Willie Nelson

•  Electric Light Orchestra

•  Ringo Starr

•  Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues

Walking time approx. 1-2 h

Arrival at Tok Tokkie base – NamibRand Nature Reserve

Arrival should be by 14:00 h at the Tok Tokkie base. While you wait for all the fellow travellers to arrive and check in, you can enjoy some refreshments. Pack a small backpack for personal items that you would like to carry with you on the walk. Your luggage will be transferred by vehicle to the overnight camp. Your tour starts with visiting the ‘Namib Desert Environmental Educational Trust’, a non-profit and donor sponsored trust aiming to develop environmentally responsible citizens in Namibia. Thereafter, enjoy a scenic drive as you are transferred to the starting point of the Tok Tokkie Trail. To get to your first camp, you will walk over hills covered by the mysterious ‘fairy circles’ and climb some of the rolling sand dunes. These dunes are covered in vegetation and are smaller than the massive dunes at Sossusvlei, yet just as amazing to explore. Watch the sun as it slowly disappears behind the dunes and relax with a drink, while your dinner is being prepared. Enjoy a 3-course dinner, served in the dunes, and fall asleep under the crystal clear night sky listening to the silence.

After a delicious lunch prepared by the staff, there will be plenty of time for you to relax in the shade or to enjoy a siesta while you wait for the heat of the day to recede. Once you have filled up your water bottle, you head further into the dunes. A sea of endless dunes, covered in ‘fairy circles’ against a backdrop of mountain scenery, provides a spectacular photo opportunity as the sunlight slowly disappears, creating an ever-changing palette of colors. Literally the best thing I have ever seen. The whole band sounded so tight, the light show was insane and they really played to the audience. Two full sets of material plus an encore was probably more than any of us expected. They played so many songs that I wanted to hear, even some really old material which was so unexpected. The whole audience was buzzing with energy and love for a band that are so good, but really don't tour enough. I'd waited 10 years for a chance to see them and now that I have, I'd have waited another 10 if I knew it was going to be that perfect. It was a privilege to be in that room and witness something so beautiful.

Absolutely incredible! The music sounded amazing live, not like anything I've heard before. Jónsi Birgisson's voice is incredible live also, even earning applause from the crowd for the length of some of the notes he pulled off. The visuals were stunning. The lights and background of the stage were beautiful. Overall a wonderful experience and will absolutely be seeing them again if I get the opportunity!

Moses Sumney

Moses was amazing. Very enigmatic but still approachable, and he had a lot of fun with the crowd. The performance was incredible, his voice is truly something to behold. I've listened to "Worth It" a million times but still got chills when he hit the high note. Would highly recommend seeing Moses live, especially before he gets really famous and expensive to see.

Jon Hopkins

Hands down the best live concert I've been to in a long time. The newest album is a dream to hear live and this was made even better by the Audio-Visual effects, which were amazing! The venue is a really great space with a stunning sound system and tech. at hand - but really the credit goes to a fantastic artist who performed amazingly. Most of the setlist was from his newest release, but his editing and remix of these tracks and sneak peeks of some newer tracks made it even better!

Julia Jacklin

Julia’s assertive charm comes across in both her music and her on stage presence, the only difference being she is funnier in between her songs in which she contemplates what it means to be a woman viewed through her own lens, that of the men she’s loved, and of a perspective that shift as time goes on. Her voice is powerful and note perfect and especially enjoyable when she closed the show with an April Lavigne cover.

Maggie Rogers

I'm so glad I got to see her in a small venue; what a magical and powerful experience. This girl radiates happiness and joy and on top of all of that, she sounds great live! There was confetti, a disco ball, Neil Young, and lots of dancing. I don't think it would have had the same effect in a large or open space, definitely jump on any chance you have to see her before she really blows up! So much love!

Music artists

For new users looking to follow their favorite bands and performers, our Artists pages are often the best place to start.

Whether you're on our site, or using our free app for iPhone and Android, the Songkick artists search engine is the fastest and simplest way to keep track of who's doing what right now. Be the first to learn which acts are touring, when they might be playing a venue near you, and how to get tickets for any future shows you like the sound of.

Looking to discover someone new? Hey, you’re our kind of music fan. That's why we've also included upcoming Live Stream Concerts alongside our artist searches, meaning you can easily schedule a more casual drop-in from the comfort of your couch.

Since launching our first app back in 2007, you guys - the fans, the concert-goers, the musical explorers - have been at the very heart of everything we do here. Our dream and our drive was always to bring Songkick members closer than ever before to the sounds they love, and the people who create them. Simply put, we pride ourselves on being your direct link to the greatest music artists on the planet.

Who are they, exactly? Well, according to our members, that changes almost by the hour...so let's talk about how Songkick keeps you in the loop.

Best live artists

A quick glance at our Most Popular Artists chart might tell you a few key things about the sorts of music fans we vibe with. For starters, it shows just how varied our members' tastes are. Pop, rock, dance, hip-hop, indie/alt and R&B all feature heavily, alongside a whole bunch of underground genres and rising scenes.

No two of you are quite the same - and frankly, we love to see it! Any time you check in, our 'most popular artists worldwide' and 'trending artists this week' leaderboards always read like a line-up for the greatest, most diverse live festival on Earth.

Among the top searches and best-selling music artists on our global roster, you might find anyone from Rhianna, Coldplay, Eminem and Ed Sheeran, through to Drake, U2, Kanye West,

Maroon 5, Beyoncé, The Midnight, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Imagine Dragons, Justin Bieber - and that's barely looking outside the top 20.

After all, if the weekly race for a spot on our most popular charts tells us anything, it's that the whole concept of 'best live bands' is a tricky one to pin down. Everybody's looking for a completely different type of experience, every night of the year.

That's another thing we love about our users: you're incredible at keeping us on our toes. In return, we’ve made it our mission to help keep you on yours.

Find and follow your favorite artists on Songkick

When people talk about the 'best live bands in the world', a few big names will reliably come up time and time again. Just as crucially, there'll always be a good handful of newcomers, hot tips and total curveballs in there too.

For us and our members alike, that's a huge part of what keeps the live concert scene so fresh and exciting. Peter Kay forced to postpone gigs for a second time because of arena issues

Comedian Peter Kay and US rockers The Black Keys have been forced to reschedule dates at the Manchester Co-op Arena due to the venue not being ready.

Peter Kay says he has been forced to postpone two shows at a new arena in Manchester again - this time for almost a month.

The comedian was due to perform at the Co-op Live in Manchester , which is set to become the UK's biggest arena, on 23 and 24 April.

Behind-schedule power tests and safety concerns meant both gigs were initially pushed back to 29 and 30 April - but now, the dates have been delayed until 23 and 24 May.

Co-op Live's general manager, Gary Roden, resigned on Thursday following a series of problems and delays at the new venue.

Kay wrote: "To everybody with tickets, my apologies once again... I know I can't believe it either."

He added: "It's very disappointing but your safety is important and I won't compromise that."

My apologies once again but unfortunately the Co-op Live still isn’t ready and so, as yet, remains untested for a large-scale audience. Consequently, they are having to reschedule my two shows yet again (I know I can’t believe it either). Read the full statement below. pic.twitter.com/QgiIdiNVlu — Peter Kay (@peterkay_co_uk) April 26, 2024

Roden announced his resignation after a slew of issues led to a delay in the opening of what will be the UK's biggest indoor arena, built at an estimated cost of £365m.

In an X/Twitter post on Friday, comedian Kay apologised to fans for the cancellations.

The 50-year-old Phoenix Nights star wrote: "To everybody with tickets, my apologies once again but unfortunately the Co-op Live still isn't ready and so, as yet, remains untested for a large-scale audience.

"Consequently, they are having to reschedule my two shows yet again (I know I can't believe it either)."

It was also announced that The Black Keys gig due to be held at the venue this weekend has been pushed back too.

Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys performs live on day 2 of the Isle of Wight Festival 2015, Seaclose Park, Isle of Wight

Headaches for Co-op Arena became patently clear after capacity for a test event last Saturday was reduced with just hours' notice.

The arena originally announced on Monday that Kay's performances would instead take place on 29 and 30 April, with Kay saying he was "truly gutted" by the delay. However, the comedy gigs will now move again, to late next month.

He wrote: "Tickets will be transferred, or refunds given if the new dates aren't suitable. It's very disappointing but your safety is important, and I won't compromise that."

In a post on X/Twitter, Co-Op Live Arena said: "Since making the difficult decision to postpone the live shows at Co- op Live due to take place this week, we have been undertaking an extensive protocol of testing critical procedures to ensure all areas are ready for fans.

"To ensure that we can run all shows safely, regretfully we have now had to take the decision to reschedule the planned The Black Keys and Peter Kay shows."

The US rock band will now play at the venue on 15 May.

A spokesperson for the venue posted: "Rescheduling Peter Kay and The Black Keys will give us the extra time we need to continue testing enhanced emergency communications thoroughly.

"This is vital to satisfy the rigorous set of guidelines and protocols that are necessary for a venue of this size to ensure that our fans, artists and staff have the safest experience possible."

Last weekend, a preview concert starring Rick Astley was also hit by delays, with capacity slashed just hours before his gig was due to begin.

Astley fans who had their tickets cancelled were instead offered seats to see The Black Keys play, before that show was pushed back.

Organisers said one problem in particular related to the power supply that was the cause of the cancellation.

A spokesperson said: "It is critical to ensure we have a consistent total power supply to our fully electric sustainable venue, the completion of which is a few days behind."

Once fully open, the arena next to Manchester City's stadium will have a capacity of 23,500, overtaking the size of the existing Manchester Arena which can hold 21,000 spectators.

The Co-Op Live Arena counts former One Direction singer Harry Styles as one of its investors, with the pop star also advising on some elements of its design.

Other stars that were due to play at the venue include Take That , Liam Gallagher , Olivia Rodrigo and Eric Clapton.

Kay has been on a comeback tour since December, appearing in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham - his first tour since 2010.

We are a well-established Namibian enterprise with a passion for hiking and trekking. We started with hiking and wilderness tours in Namibia in 1991.

The owners Kerstin Klein and Thomas Soutschka are passionate hikers with a lot of hiking experience in Africa, South America and Asia.

Both have travelled Southern Africa extensively and have guided innumerable tours themselves. This extensive experience enables them to combine an in-depth knowledge of Southern Africa with the professionalism needed for organizing unforgettable tours.

Hiking and wilderness tours offer a unique nature experience as they bring you into direct contact with the world you want to explore.

This direct contact is part of our philosophy. No matter if you go on a hiking tour or on a self-drive safari, we want to offer you the opportunity to change perspective and discover Namibia’s miraculous landscapes on your own feet. Discover spots where no vehicle can go to. As close as you can.

Last but not least our office team relieves you of the burden of organising your hiking trip as we take over all the bureaucracy and logistics.

We dedicate all our experience and effort to making you enjoy your precious holiday. Almost 20 years of experience guarantee for that. Just contact us.

Responsible Tourism

Every form of utilisation leaves a footprint on nature. If managed well hiking is a very eco-friendly and non-invasive way of travelling.

Keeping our footprint in Namibia’s unspoilt landscapes as small as possible is of utmost importance to us.

Small Groups and Qualified Guides

In a small group of maximum 8 hikers, you will be able to savour Namibia’s vast and inspiring calmness. Namibia still offers landscapes where you are virtually alone.

No beaten tracks. No masses of people.

Our nature guides will be there to share their knowledge with you. Hiking brings you close to nature and our guides will round up your experience with information and the little stories and anecdotes that you won’t easily find in a book.

Quality and Safety

Thorough planning, experience and knowledge are essential for hiking trips to remote areas. We offer just that. We only employ qualified and experienced tour guides who have shown their professionalism and their ability to guide you safely also in difficult terrain.

In Namibia’s rugged and untamed landscapes they will keep you on track.

We are members of the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), Tour & Safari Association Namibia (TASA) as well as the Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) and, for your safety, we comply with all applicable rules and regulations set out by these organisations.

It goes without saying that we have all necessary insurance covers. Our sound financial basis just adds to that.

Our History

Tok Tokkie Trails – Since 1997!

“In the midst of the complexities of modern life, with all its pressures, the spirit of man needs to refresh itself by communion with unspoiled nature. In such surroundings- occasional as our visits may be- we can achieve that kind of physical and spiritual renewal that comes alone from the wonder of the natural world.” – Laurance S. Rockefeller

Tok Tokkie Trails was founded by Marc and Elinor Duerr, both well-known personalities in the Namibian tourism industry. The idea for Tok Tokkie Trails was born when Marc and Elinor, who were at that time both working for a safari company in Namibia, were asked by guests from France why there were no walking trails in Namibia. This was back in 1995. From then on, they were captivated by the idea. NamibRand Nature Reserve, which had been founded in 1992, virtually suggested itself as the place where the trail should be done. Both, Marc and Elinor already knew the reserve very well from their work. Marc was an experienced guide and Elinor knew how to do the necessary office work. So, they took their chance and approached the management of NamibRand Nature Reserve. When they obtained one of the five low-impact ecotourism concessions in the reserve, Tok Tokkie Trails was born.

The founders did a lot of walking in the area of the abandoned “Die Duine” farmhouse, which is now the Tok Tokkie Trails base. “Die Duine” used to be a farm which became incorporated into the NamibRand Nature Reserve, when the drought in the 1980’s made it clear that livestock farming in that ecologically sensitive area was not sustainable. “Die Duine” means “The Dune” in Africaans language and refers to the picturesque setting at the foot of rolling vegetated sand dunes with a backdrop of amazing mountain scenery.

The first Tok Tokkie Trail started on 25 February 1997 on a different route than today. It was a great success. Over the years the route as well as the Tok Tokkie Trails experience has been fine tuned. Tok Tokkie Trails offers a very special experience for nature lovers and for travelers who know that a beautiful landscape can best be discovered at a slow pace. Many tourists come to Namibia to experience that vast open space and magnificent tranquility that is so difficult to be found elsewhere. Tok Tokkie Trails presents a formidable way to immerse in the pristine Namibian nature. In 2006 the founders assigned management and operations to Unlimited Travel & Car Hire cc and in 2008 the Tok Tokkie Trails concession was transferred completely to Unlimited Travel & Car Hire cc. Unlimited Travel & Car Hire CC took over all the existing staff and employed additional chefs and other personnel. Frans for example, member of the back-up and maintenance team, has been there from day one. Over the years, Frans, originally from the comparatively humid Kavango in the north of Namibia, has acquired a lot of knowledge about the desert and its inhabitants. Today, Tok Tokkie Trails is a “Hiking with Style” experience, where guests have the opportunity to get close to the Namib’s awesome beauty and discover many secrets of the desert which cannot be seen while driving. Tok Tokkie Trails’ guests can savour the pristine surroundings, free their mind, make the unusual experience of staying without roof for more than 48 hours, and still enjoy the luxuries that they do not want to miss. Giving you a great time is what we strive for!
