Live review: tony hadley 40th anniversary tour + the vanities – st david’s hall, cardiff, 09.03.2022.

Chiara Strazzulla

It is good to get a sense of normality again as restrictions lift even in Wales and gigs come back, and this mid-week appointment with the Cardiff date of Tony Hadley’s 40th anniversary tour, celebrating four full decades since the inception of Spandau Ballet, was an excellent occasion to shake off the cobwebs and experience a rather different mood from my usual post-punk fare. The framing was that of Cardiff’s St David’s Hall – more theatre than music venue, but with the kind of stage you want the big showy bands to get access to – and the crowd, while in turn rather different from the usual lot to be found at grassroots clubs, still found a way to get some dancing in, making for a relaxed but far-from-charmless affair. Nostalgia operations have never quite been my thing, and I feel ambivalent at best about seated gigs, but as someone who grew up with the rock classics of the 70s and 80s I have a soft spot for New Wave and synth-pop, and Spandau Ballet were a recurring music presence in my house growing up, so it was interesting to take a dive into the past for once.

I will add for full disclosure that the primary push for me in attending this gig was to see the support. There is something delightful in seeing a band you like catch a break, and The Vanities fully deserve one, as their sound is one of the most interesting coming out of the Cardiff scene in recent times. The synth-rock duo, made up of vocalist Rhys Bradley and bass guitarist Adam Hill, were joined on stage by a full complement of supporting musicians for a set showcasing material from their most recent album, 2001. There is much to love in there for anyone who enjoys a bit of cheeky electronica, and plenty of suggestions and influences to unpack: most prominent is certainly the inspiration derived from a fairly large chunk of the late David Bowie’s career (with echoes of Aladdin Sane, Outside, and, most surprisingly, Cat People), a hint of Depeche Mode, a solid dose of various synth lines straight from the 80s, and even some snippets of something that sounds a lot like soft jazz. I am notoriously partial to a good sax solo, and saxophonist Jack McDougal delivered above and beyond. It is always a daunting task to open a gig, especially for a big act with a loyal audience, and even more so in a seated venue, but The Vanities showed up with a charismatic stage presence and an impressively polished delivery, and their set felt much too short. I am very eager to see this band get up close and personal with the audience in a grassroots venue, as they have plenty of energy and magnetism and they’re not scared to make good use of it.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

Most of the crowd, of course, was there for the main act, and I will say that my trepidation surrounding it was unwarranted, as Hadley delivered a solid, long set with a charming stage presence and plenty of interesting moments. The voice is still there, still powerful and capable of virtuoso moments, and so is the innate charisma that is the true making of a frontman. I did greatly appreciate that the inevitable nostalgia romp was punctuated with new materials, and that those had a fair degree of inventiveness and complex research in their sound, although it must be said that the old glories from the Spandau Ballet years still dominate in terms of both musical complexity and uniqueness of voice. One interesting observation emerging from this, in fact, was to realise how some of the less known Spandau Ballet pieces selected by Hadley for performance were so much more accomplished, intriguing, and musically unique than the big, famous hits the audience was clamouring for (both  True  and  Gold  were duly performed, and yet they sounded somehow less than compared to what I would call the truly impressive highlights of this set, the more obscure, slightly more neurotic tracks with their synth lines still closely related to something that may have come out of Germany in the late 70s, their buzzing bass and their sax flourishes). There were some covers, too, woven into the performance gracefully and in a non-intrusive way; one of the things I enjoyed, as someone who often lingers, when it comes to live performance consumption, between music and theatre, was the way in which the set felt at times like something in between music gig and cabaret show. Hadley has the presence for it, the ability to not take himself too seriously and the technical skill to support it, and he plays to the crowd in an effortless way that made the whole nostalgia operation much more palatable and pleasant than it might otherwise have been.

If there is a lingering reflection carrying on after this gig, it is, I think, a bizarre note of hopefulness in seeing an old glory and an up-and-coming band in such close sequence, sounding as if there was a clear continuity between them and yet as if the old times were not the only refuge available, their continuity unbroken as new bands step up to produce music that is both aware of its past and eager to step into its future. Nostalgic as they night might have been, it is by looking out for that future that one comes out on the other side.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

Spring has commenced and Sydney has slowly been warming up as we approach summer.  However, when Tony Hadley hits town, things heat up considerably more! There was such anticipation for this gig, the local area was already bustling long before Hadley was due on stage.  The Enmore Theatre, aglow after a recent refurbishment, was packed as fans mingled, anxiously waiting for the show to begin.

Celebrating a phenomenal 40 years in music, Hadley has achieved what few people can: the longevity of a successful career while keeping those God-blessed vocal cords in mint condition. It must be his favourite tipple that keeps those pipes in glorious form. We are so fortunate that, after all these years, we still get the chance to spend a couple of delightful hours together.

Local talent Amber Lawrence was our support act. Hers was a fun and entertaining set that well and truly worked the crowd up for Hadley to take us into his world of music. The air switched to ‘giddy’ for many of the female fans as Lawrence wrapped up her performance. I noticed multiple generations in attendance. Lots of happy women awaiting their childhood crush and, of course, many men too, who just have good taste.  Hadley is a renowned and brilliant live performer; we knew exactly what we were in for tonight.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

As the stage lit up and Tony appeared with his TH Band , it was finally time to indulge in his power vocals and dominant stage presence.  With a swag of classic songs, there was lots of dancing and swooning. The screaming, whistling and ‘woo wooing’ had begun as we were taken back into the Spandau Ballet songs of the 1980’s with Instinction . The energy of this performance is already apparent as the crowd starts to shed any inhibitions from the get-go. Without missing a beat, it’s straight into another high-octane Spandau track, Highly Strung , then onto Oh Carol and back to Spandau Ballet’s debut track, To Cut A long Story Short, showcasing early 80’s synth at its finest. Hadley’s luscious vocals were on full display and we were in for quite a show . He is still such a dish, naturally suave and sexy, while impeccably dressed in his trademark suits.

It’s such a thrill to be with music lovers at concerts again, absorbing performances of such high calibre as Hadley , a true showman who loves performing and radiates on stage. Hadley and his band are flawless, with a great camaraderie, as they effortlessly glide from track to track whilst Hadley chats between certain songs and holds the crowd’s attention. One of many personal favourites, the saucy Only When You Leave is next. I must admit, some butterflies began to stir as Hadley’s incomparable voice just booms across the venue. It is remarkable that he can belt out those Spandau Ballet songs, in the same fashion, after all these years, and Sydney had come out in full force to lap it all up.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

Communication is up next, then Obvious also makes the cut tonight, as does the gorgeous I’ll Fly For You . This is where the word ‘swoon’ needs to be inserted once again. Gosh, it just makes one melt, and the fans here are like putty in the palm of Hadley’s hands. Hearing ‘Love You Tony!!!!’   being screamed is de rigueur at a Tony Hadley gig, and it is totally understandable why he generates such reactions from people. His layered vocals are rich and sensuous and hark to a time when a voice was genuinely a voice, when artists actually needed pure talent to succeed. This is the very reason why a performer like Hadley is still selling out venues across the globe.

Tonight’s set list weaves us a wonderful story that celebrates Hadley’s musical magic across the last four decades. Describing the fans as ‘grinning from ear to ear’ is an understatement as Round and Round follows, then Lost In Your Love , Soul Boy and Because Of You .  The hauntingly lovely Through the Barricades and Tonight Belongs To Us hold us in awe, until we are taken back up-tempo with some more 80’s deliciousness as Chant No. 1 (I Don’t Need This Pressure On) gets the crowd revved up.  I spy some dancing in the aisles as the lights flicker and pulsate, and even though there are at least 1500 of us here tonight, this show feels quite intimate as Hadley draws you in and makes you feel like you are a part of his own little club.

Mad About You and Lifeline lead us into another Spandau Ballet classic, True. This often-sampled ballad has the entire theatre swaying and singing along, word for word.  The sheer quality of tonight’s entertainment, and depth of vocal skill, is on a level all its own. I cannot believe the time has flown by so quickly as we are already up to the first standing ovation, mixed with deafening screams, that leads into our encore. The venue is erupting and no one is leaving. I check my notes and realise I’ve been so caught up in the show that I’ve scribbled only slightly legible words. Luckily for me, I’m no stranger to the accomplished Hadley and his extensive catalogue.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

Hadley and band make their way back on stage, beginning our encore with jazz number One For My Baby displaying his versatility, as the room transforms into a sultry bar for a few minutes. So comfortable is Hadley with performing, it is so obvious that he still really enjoys what he does. This is what really brings his shows to life and gives him an edge. The anticipation for our last song is no surprise as the iconic Gold thunders through the theatre as Hadley hammers and holds those long notes with ease. As we head into a second ovation, the Enmore Theatre is lit up and every fan holds onto the last moments of this cracking show.

Charming us once again with his exuberant and lively stage presence, Hadley, along with his band, was an absolute pleasure, and it was pure bliss to observe a performer who loves what he does and enjoys the crowd. Hadley is one of the finest male vocalists of all time and it was such a treat to celebrate this latest milestone with him on his current Australian tour. Hadley mentioned that future tours are already crossing his mind.  At least we have that to hold onto, until next time!

Live Review – Tony Hadley (Ex Spandau Ballet)

40th Anniversary Australian Tour at the Astor Theatre Perth, 22nd September 2022.

By Sheldon Ang

Photos by Sheldon Ang Photography

I know this much is true.

With mic in hand, he thumps low through the air with the conviction of a prized fighter, before recoiling his torso backwards as sweat gushes from his face. He turns his back to the audience and stares at the drummer, teasing in both directions by wiggling his frame like Frank Stallone live in the Solid Gold Countdown of ’83. With the beat from the percussionist reaching climax, he swings one-eighty and executes a left hook on the punch line of the chorus. The photographer on front row in a KISS T shirt salutes with a rockstar gesture. The singer smiles and returns favour. He then ponders in an imperious sense of wonderment – After forty years, I still got the power, I’m indestructible.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

Tony Hadley – the former frontman of the 80’s synthpop supergroup Spandau Ballet , took fans into an era when music and dance were carved from the state of the heart…when Marilynn McCoo was fashionable with those quarterback shoulder pads. For two hours, the romantics were pinned to every word curated by Tony Hadley, from the autographical reflection prior to Spandau Ballet to the present day at sixty-two years young, as the 80’s children relived through the nostalgic downpour from the roof of the historic Astor Theatre.

Hadley graced the stage with Instinction from the 1982 album Diamond, followed by Highly Strung and Oh Carol .

tony hadley tour 2022 review

I auditioned for the lead singer of a boy band…and I got it…Our first tour in Australia was in 1985. Five young lads coming here was a dream come true…and I always think, despite of what’s going on, without those guys, I wouldn’t be here now…and I always thank them.

The audience had come for the legacy of Spandau Ballet, and Hadley’s setlist shone through. Round and Round from the 1984 album Parade was one of those anthemic tracks. Despite the faultless production, the studio version felt like a ballad trapped in a TDK cassette compared to the live propagation, as Hadley thematically embraced the lyrics that moans frustration, yearning, desperation and obsession.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

We should live in peace together, regardless of race, religion, background…

Through the Barricades was inspired by the killing of Thomas Reilly in 1983, a friend of the band who was shot by a soldier in Belfast. The performance exposed the singer’s vulnerability, interpreting the words into lyrical perfection, oozing the visceral outpour in its melancholy. It also gave the fans a time to reflect on the golden era, diving into the realm of nostalgia and poignancy, trickled from the heartfelt performance. Accordingly this track remains as Hadley’s favourite song of Spandau Ballet.

The singer’s appearance fluctuated through various poses and under certain lighting conditions. For most of the night, there was something Alec Baldwin about the man from Islington, London – a charming debonair commanding the attention by the virtue of his stage presence. There were times when Hadley oozed the persona of a retired James Bond.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

There are a lot of guys here who were dragged here tonight by your girlfriends or wives…and you’d be thinking, ‘I’d rather be in a pub with my mates’. Trust me, when you get home tonight…especially after this song, it’ll be OK….this is my gift…to you.

As the journey drew to a close, it seems that everyone was waiting for the two moments that defined the sounds of the early 80’s. It is one of the very few songs where the intro of the instruments draws as much excitement as the chorus or punch line. True was a worldwide hit. Like most songs in their catalogue, the song was written by the group leader Gary Kemp in 1983 for the album of the same name, charting at number one in the UK, subsequently becoming their seminal piece that engraved Spandau Ballet into music royalty. Over in Australia, it peaked at number four. The performance glided for under seven minutes of mellifluous smothering vocals, punctuated by the self-appointed backup singers that came for the ride on the chorus.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

After nineteen songs such as Obvious , Soul Boy , and Lost In Your Love , the night closed with Gold , also taken from their third album True . The Astor converted to a dancefloor, encouraged by the animated Hadley who gainly punched into the air as he sternly drove the word Gold.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

At 62 years young, Hadley’s vocal range transcends the realms of highs and lows, expandable and malleable to align with the eclectic styles of the Spandau Ballet’s discography. It was as if his chords has encased in a time capsule, only to climax for the first time in over four decades. It wouldn’t have been surprising if he had sung ‘Nessun Dorma’ to showcase his repertoire.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

For this writer/photographer who had taken this journey in March 2020 – also at the Astor Theatre, it was a second homecoming. Some fans might have been familiar with a handful of tracks prior to the night’s journey. But Hadley’s explosive performance have sparked a new wave of discoveries and revived obsessions, leaving the after taste that lingers long after the performance, subsequently blooming a new generation of time travellers in search of the tragic world of the New Romantics…the sound of the golden era.

And I know this much is true.

Hadley Swings The Classics On His New Tour

Mar 4, 2024 | Review Beat

A recent leg operation didn’t deter the 63-year-old former Spandau Ballet frontman from pulling out his latest UK tour which kicked off in Portmouth last night…

REVIEW By Ian Woolley

PORTSMOUTH GUILDHALL TONY HADLEY BIG SWING TOUR

Recently, I asked what his fans can expect on his new tour.”Yes predominantly I will always do my pop stuff but we have got a vinyl album coming out to accompany the tour which comes out mid-February but then I’ve got a new ‘new’ album which is a contemporary pop album coming out in 2025. So we’ve been really busy doing bits and bobs and it’s good to switch heads and when we perform it takes you into a different head space. And the swing stuff is so laid back and super cool with some great songs and great lyrics as well”.

A near-capacity Guildhall witnessed a suited Hadley (complete with a leg brace on his right leg) enter the stage carrying a glass of ‘Jack’, which even Sinatra would have proved of back in the day. With a four-piece assembled brass section behind alongside his regular band on either side separated by floor-mounted spots, the stage had that retro feel.

As he apologised to the crowd for his recent leg op, a seated Hadley launched into his first number, the Nina Simone classic “Feeling Good”. The crowd were feeling it to as “The Mood I’m In” led into “Fly Me To The Moon” and then “The Good Life”. The latter a nod to it’s singer Tony Bennett whom Tony met in person with his mum. Up came the first pair of Spandau classics delivered in a swing style, “Only When You Leave”, and as Tony publicly declares, his personal favourite Spandau Ballet song, “Through The Barricades”.

As Tony prefers to stand for this number, long-time band member Lily Gonzalez joins him on the vocals.

“Just A Gigolo” and “Wives And Lovers” came next with a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer if the lyrics might offend today’s audience. “Love For Sale” flowed into “True” as Tony dipped back into his pop roots. The last three numbers, “Wait For You” and “Bewitched” was sandwiched by one of his new numbers from the BBC piano room sessions recorded recently, “Walk Of Shame” which for me was one of the surprise highlights of the set.

The second set opened with “Touch Me”, “Too Close For Comfort” and another new song, “The Summer Wind”. “I Wanna Be Around” mellowed into “The Lady Is A Tramp” and for the first time from where I was sitting, you could hear the audience singing along.

“You Make Me Feel So Young” was followed by “Alfie” after Hadley told the audience of the time he was introduced to Michael Caine through his friend Bob Hoskins at a charity function.

“Yes, I’ve heard of you”, replied the actor. “My Daughter drives me mad by playing your records!”

The next set of songs Hadley chose, apart from one, were some of the best swing classics Hadley could never leave off the playlist. “Mack The Knife”, “Come Fly With Me” and “That’s Life” with the latter getting the warmest applause of the evening and rightfully so. Hadley’s poise and delivery left no doubt to anybody in the auditorium that he can deliver the big numbers when it’s needed.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

Talking of big numbers, Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” brought the room alight as the set final was the Sinatra classic “My Way” . With a ‘jack’ in hand and a nod to the crowd, Hadley really did. The fans expected an encore and Tony and the band delivered with two final numbers “One For My Baby” and “If I Can Dream” which brought a standing ovation their performance undoubtedly deserved. Every member of his band played a vital part in bringing together timeless swing classics and pop hits in a way that looked effortless.

“Sinatra would call it easy, and in 2024, Hadley provides the cool”.

And timeless classics always go down well with everyone who appreciates well-written and delivered songs.

“Rod (Stewart) has just come out with a new swing album, and I think people do look at the past. So I do it and of course, Michael Bublé does it and there are other swing singers out there and because it just sounds so good with the brass section and a band that’s swinging”, Tony tells me.

“There was no way I was ever going to cancel this tour”, 63-year-old Tony announced finally.

The Big Swing Tour 2024

If tonight’s performance is as good as the rest of the tour, then Hadley’s latest offering will please his Spandau fans and those of a certain age who remember those swing classics sung in a way that brings back those memories.

Don’t miss it.

In our February issue of the Beat, we asked him about his favourite swing classic, and he reveals the time that he met Tony Bennett backstage along with which crooner he took his mum to see. Copies are available on our website.

Recent tour reviews

It was a concert with approx. 400 fans.

Damian Wilson opened the evening. A great voice and an accustic guitar. He entertained an hour.

Then Tony Hadley and Band came on stage. We had fantastic night. He sang his new songs from his album "talking to the moon" and the greatest hits from Spandau Ballet. His live voice sounds better than in 80's. He is a great performer. I had goosebumps. The evening went by too fast. I hope to see him soon again.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

Tony Hadley performs the hits of Spandau Ballet with The Southbank Sinfonia Orchestra at The Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham on Wednesday 15 th October 2014.

Images and Review by: Kevin Cooper

Music has a tremendous ability to take you back in time, and sitting in a packed Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, listening to Tony Hadley launch into a number of Spandau Ballet hits, I was back in the 80’s, behind the wheel of my first car, a Ford Capri, with the cassette player on too loud.

Having had one of the most distinctive voices of that time, it was interesting to see if he still had it and believe me there is no doubt that he is still a powerhouse performer. His close friend Peter Cox of Go West affectionately refers to him as the ‘Big Shouty Bloke’ which says it all really. Throw in an orchestra, a brass section and a band and the Spandau Ballet frontman struck pure gold.

Entering the stage promptly at 7.30pm, the Orchestra and band were given a polite welcome but as soon as Tony Hadley took to the stage in his trademark dark suit but with the addition of a loose bow tie around his neck, the audience went wild.

He began by telling the audience that this would be a performance of two halves, the first being a mix of his favourite songs and new material, whilst the second would be devoted to Spandau songs.

I could not fault his taste with his chosen numbers; In A New York Minute, Bowie’s Life On Mars, Somebody Told Me by The Killers and Time In A Bottle were all well selected, together with a couple of new tracks of his soon to be released album, which included Heroes and Lovers, The Dice and Remember Me, which was in fact quite lovely. He bravely finished this part of his set with Bridge Over Troubled Water and I say bravely because having heard Simon and Garfunkel sing this at a concert in Hyde Park many moons ago, it is a brave man who tries to cover it. Tony Hadley almost managed to pull it off.

It was clear from the audience’s reaction as the Orchestra took to the stage for the second part that it was the Spandau numbers that they had come to hear. The whole atmosphere became more lively and animated, as Hadley walked out onto the stage, looking as though he would not be out of place in The Rat Pack.

Starting off with To Cut A Long Story Short, Hadley went through a back catalogue of Spandau hits spanning more than thirty years, with The Southbank Sinfonia Orchestra providing an impressive twist to the tracks. The hits just followed; Only When You Leave, I’ll Fly For You, Toys, Chant No 1 (I Don’t Need This Pressure On) and Lifeline were all given the Orchestras star treatment.

A special mention must be made of tonight’s version of Musclebound, which had the Orchestra turning what was a Spandau stomp song into something quite beautiful with the melodic violins, and Hadley’s personal favourite, Through The Barricades was actually quite stunning.

We were treated to a new song, Soul Boys, from Spandau’s forthcoming Greatest Hits album, which could have been written for a James Bond film, whilst Hadley encouraged a mass sing a long when he delivered True; the song that probably brought back lovely memories to this audience as they remembered what they were doing when it was originally released.

A rousing rendition of Fight For Ourselves ended the main set before Hadley returned for an encore of Gold.

It has been a very busy time for Tony Hadley recently; with Spandau Ballet being properly back together, a recent red carpet event of the Premier of Soul Boys Of The Western World, the terrific documentary film about the band, a gig at The Royal Albert Hall with his mates, and to be honest, you haven’t been able to switch on the TV without seeing Spandau Ballet promoting their movie and their new hits anthology.

Coupled with all of this, Spandau have announced a major tour of the UK next year, and with that in prospect, this gig was a chance to see if Tony Hadley still had what it takes. On tonight’s showing there is no doubt that the man can still sing. His singing career may have started in the 70’s, but Hadley is still very much on fine form.

It would not have surprised me if most of this audience left immediately to join the queue to purchase their Spandau tickets.

tony hadley tour 2022 review

The Rolling Stones opened their 2024 tour on April 28, their first U.S. run since Fall 2021. The concert, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Tex., was their first stage performance since they gave an invitation-only seven-song club date in New York City last Oct. 19, in which they previewed four songs from their Hackney Diamonds album. The album, for which this tour is named, is their first studio effort of all-new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang .

On 2024’s opening night, they played three tracks from the new album, as well as songs spanning from their vast catalog. (See the setlist below.)

The Stones ‘ last tour—in 2022—was limited to 14 concerts, all in Europe and the U.K. [ Our recap of the closing night, Aug. 3, in Berlin.] The 2021 U.S. edition of their “No Filter” tour was their first without Charlie Watts, who died shortly before the tour began.

Unlike their last two tours which began with a video tribute to Watts, Sunday night’s show in Houston, began with a frequent opener, “Start Me Up.”

Early on, they dug deep into their early catalog to perform “Out of Time,” which Jagger said they had never performed in the States before.

Next up was “Angry,” the first track they played from the new album.

Shortly thereafter, “Mess It Up,” also from Hackney Diamonds , made its concert debut.

“Tumbling Dice” came midway through the set.

The Stones’ tour schedule offers the band many days off in between the 19 shows. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards both turned 80 in 2023. Ronnie Wood is a relative youngster, having turned “just” 76 last June 1. The 19 dates span a whopping 11 1/2 weeks; it doesn’t conclude until July 17.

“Jumpin’ Jack Flash” closed the main set.

The first of two encores was “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” from the new album.

They closed the show with their 1965 classic.

By performing three songs from  Hackney Diamonds , it meant that several chestnuts needed to be excluded from the setlist, including “Street Fighting Man,” “Angie,” and “Midnight Rambler.” (It’s been several years since the Stones last played “Brown Sugar.”)

It was a fantastic concert! Full energy the whole set. Gary Clark Jr was an awesome opener.

The Stones’ should of asked Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman to tour with them. Mick Taylor of course left the Band during their Golden years. He was their lead and best guitarist from 1969 -1974 when the Stones made their best music. Bill Wyman was there from the beginning. With Charlie and Brian gone, Mick & Keith are the only original members.

Jarmo Keranen

What are talking about? Bill Wyman is almost 88 years old and looks like he should be in retirement home instead of concert stage. Not sure what is Mick Taylor’s condition in these days. At least he’s 13 years younger than Bill.
