OFF ROAD IN ALBANIA

For all of you who are keen on Off Road adventure by 4×4 vehicles, Albania offers an ideal Off Road terrain of more than 3000 km to make it happen. 

Choosing 4×4 Off Road explore means loving a certain form of adventure in which freedom is the leaven. Freedom to get off the beaten track and off the slopes usually frequented by tourist expeditions, it is going to meet the authentic, in search of true contact with other cultures, to find, through a smile, the traditional welcome , a mixture of curiosity and customs . During this tour we will have the chance to visit numerous churches, temples, mosques and archaeological sites listed as World Heritage of UNESCO .

With a view to accomplishing this challenging adventure you can use your own vehicle or Albania Adventure will put at your disposal 4WD vehicles which are especially modified for Off Road tours . When on this adventure we will be accommodated in guesthouses, hotels or we will set up our camping tents , this depending on your preference.

OFF ROAD IN ALBANIA "THE HIDDEN ALBANIA"

Albania Adventure guides will pick you up at Tirana International Airport to go to Shkodra city, where we will be accommodated.

Shkodra is the largest city in northern Albania with a history of ancient civilization and culture.

Later we will proceed with a visit to: Rozafa Castle . From its ancient Illyrian walls and the medieval ruins of the Balshaj, to the Towers of the Bushatllinj, Rozafa Castle is a monumental testament to the beauty of an everlasting fortress.

Built during Antiquity , enduring the Roman and Ottoman empires, and remaining intact up to the present day, Rozafa Castle has witnessed the dramatic changes of tide over the course Albania’s fascinating history.

The Cathedral of Shkodra called the Great Church, because at the time the building was one of the largest churches in the Balkans .

The next visit is  New Mosque Ebu Bekr ,  which is the largest in Albania and among the largest in the Balkans . It is worth noting that one of the greatest values of Albanian people is the coexistence and religious tolerance.

SHKODER – THETH

Called by foreign tourists “Europe’s Last Paradise” , the village of Theth is located in the northern part of Shala valley. It is a magnificent beauty between the Alps .

We will be hosted in a warm guest house.

THETHI VALLEY – VAU DEJES LAKE

We will spend the first part of day visiting Thethi valley , Grunas Water fall and Blue Eye . We will leave Thethi valley, this amazing part of Albanian Alps to go down in Shkoder and then later we continue our trip through hills, in narrow roads which winds from one abandoned village to other and later we drive along the of Vau Dejes  lake . 

Accommodation in a camping in a lake shore of Vau Dejes . This lake is f ormed in 1971 from the Drin catchment. The lake extends through mountain gorges , making the landscape quite attractive . The surface of the lake is 24.7 km, and it has a depth of 52 meters, and the Vau Dejes hydro power plant was built in it.

VAU DEJES – VALBONA VALLEY

Early in the morning we take the ferry to go in Valbona . During the 3 hour-sailing we will be acquainted with Komani Lake , which closely resembles with Norwegian fjords . The panorama here is considered as a gem of Albanian natural beauties .

After we got off the ferry we  will climb in an amazing off road terrain in direction of highland “Bjeshket e namuna” . Late in afternoon we will descent in Valbona valley, where we will be accommodated.

VALBONA VALLEY – RUBIK

We leave from Valbona valley to follow an old road of dictatorial regime , called Qafa e Malit with more then 2000 bends in 4 hours. 

We will follow the Mat River which leads us to the small town of Rubik , where we will be accommodate.

RUBIK – LURA NATIONAL PARK – PESHKOPI

In the morning we will leave Rubik and after we have traversed Mirdita’s district , we will step into Lura’s National Park , which lies in the highland of Lura and occupies an area of 1300 ha. The territory of the park of Lura is very rugged by a row of mountain streams where the most popular are Seta, Uraka, Malla of Lura. The park’s 14 lakes, which are glacial ones , offer a magnificent beauty. Lunch is predicted in a traditional local restaurant.

In the afternoon we will leave the park for reach the city of Peshkopi, where we will be accommodated. 

PESHKOPI – BULQIZE – LIBRAZHD – POGRADEC

We will depart very early , as this will be the longest journey throughout your adventure in Albania . The road from Peshkopi to Bulqize will be harsh and we will often find traces of the off road tours that our guides have made so far. This area is the best one for training and testing 4WD vehicles .

This day will pass along the old trails , a part of Albania which has been abandoned for decades . There will be endless hours in this trip where we almost are not going to meet anyone . Around midday, between the mountains, we will stop for lunch and we can also visit a masjid, place of worship for Bektashi religion . In the afternoon, we will go down from Biza field towards Librazhdi city where the terrain will be more difficult for a long time. In the late afternoon we will reach Pogradec city , where Ohrid Lake will accompany us for a long time.

Accommodation in Pogradec, in a nice hotel and a deliciuos dinner with fresh trout, the endemic fish of Ohrid Lake.

POGRADEC – HIGHLAND OF MOKRA -KORCE

Old road used during the communist time , especially from the military this because of the rough terrain now are totally abandoned and used only by the shepherds. The highlight of this day is “Gur i Kamjes” . This big rock and other stones with strange shapes , feature of this area gives the feeling of passing in an extraterrestrial area .

KORCE – HIGH LAND OF KORCE – PERMET

Southeast Albania is our next scheduled stop once we have left behind the city of Korça. We will be travelling across villages and cities with a small density population . In this part of not well-developed Albania time seems to go slowly. This is obviously noticed from the old road infrastructure which date back in the communism era . As we pass through mountains and hills in southern Albania we will achieve inexperienced inner peace. The famous Permet’s thermal baths will be visited in the afternoon. They are located in Benje region, part of Permet city. The sulfur based waters spring from six sources at the massive rocks ground, on both sides of Langarice River . Four from these sources are distinguished for their curative effects of chronic rheumatism , stomach and on related diseases. Benje’s thermal waters reach a temperature of 26 -32°C.

After this we will continue our tour towards Gjirokaster city . Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most attractive tourists sities of the country . The city is overlooked by Gjirokastër Fortress.

PERMET – ZAGORI VALLEY – GJIROKASTER

We leave Permet to start a strong climbing of 1000 m in just 8 km and later we go down ahead to the Zagoria Valley . 

Zagoria Valley is one of the biggest valleys in the area in an altitude 160-900 meters. In this altitude it changes the character several times. It narrows and expands during its length, creating canyons and beautiful reliefs. While Pogoni Valley is along Suha River , surrounded by high mountains of Nemercka (2485) and Burrreto (1766m ). Later in afternoon we drive toward Gjirokaster , where we will be accommodated.

GJIROKASTER -NIVICE – BORSH BEACH – VLORA CITY

From Gjirokastra we will drive towards Tepelena to continue to the canyon and the village of Nivica . In our left side we can see the wonderful view of the canyon. We will drive along the Vlora river until the Kuci Buronjas’s, the Kuci village and the coastal village of Borsh . Late in afternoon departure towards the Vlora coastal city.

VLORE – NARTA & KARAVASTA LAGOON – TIRANE

Starting from Vlora on this day we will visit two lagoons . The first one is  Narta lagoon. It has a total area of about 41.8 km2.

This lagoon lies in the southeastern area of the Gulf of Vlora and is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a narrow coastal belt, consisting of alluvial dunes with a total length of about 5 miles (8 km). It is formed by the continuous accumulation of solid flows of the Vjosa River .

The second lagoon is Karavasta lagoon, the largest lagoon in Albania, spanning an area of 42 km 2.

Later in afternoon we will reach Tirana.

4x4 Jeep Safari Bovilla Lake - Kruja Old Town

Our tour starts with us heading towards Tirana city and go for a light off road to reach Bovilla Lake, we will be going through the rural villages of the area and get a glimpse of what it is to live in those areas. W e will than  reach the city of Kruja where we will be having lunch and visit the city for a couple of hours.

Hotel Pickup 

We'll kick off the day by picking you up from your hotel in Golem/Qerret/Durres.

Bovilla Lake:

Our first stop is the tranquil Bovilla Lake. Spend 30 minutes here taking in the peaceful scenery and snapping some photos.

Rural Villages Exploration:  

Next, we'll venture through the charming rural villages nearby. Get a taste of local life as we wind through the countryside.

Mount Qafshtama:  

We'll make a quick 15-minute stop at Mount Qafshtama for some breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Kruja Exploration:  

In Kruja, you'll have some free time to wander around the historic city. Check out the famous Kruja Castle and explore the bustling markets.

Lunch Break:

Take a break and enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the local eateries, sampling some traditional Albanian cuisine.

Return Journey:  

After lunch, we'll hop back in the car and head back to Golem, wrapping up our day of adventure.

North & south Albania

Off-road tour description., level of difficulty: 🚩🚩  red flags.

👉 2 🚩🚩      = Moderate. With two red flags, you can drive off-road even if you are not experienced with off-road tracks in the forests or in some difficult tracks where are no risks.

During our tour we will drive: Very Old roads, Muddy roads, Forest roads opened before and later of the communism system. Mountains up to 2440 M Altitude with a Beautiful Panoramic View, Rivers, Canyons, Lakes, Sea, Beach. Asphalt will be part of the trip for accessing on the off-road tracks.

Documents & Equipment. -Passport or ID card -All the necessary documents for your Car -Insurance for Albania. If your insurance company does not offer this service then I can buy it here, all you need is to send me a copy of your current insurance. in this way, we can start quickly the tour without losing time.

Equipment required for your Expedition: – MT Tires, (BF Goodrich, Malatesta, Swamper, Simex). – 4×4 Car prepared with Winch and Reducer – CB radio or Mobile Radio

Camping equipment: Everything that you need for the Camp-tour. Table, chairs, gas stove, cooking pots, cutlery, mugs, plates. etc. (Catering with fresh Bio Foods and fresh Meat we can stop every two days to the Mini Markets.

North to South of Albania in 10 Days. The journey begins by heading to the Albanian Alps, Theth village and enjoying the beauties of the Mountains during our Tour. the Finish Point is Saranda City or Himara, the booth is Located totally South  Albania. If we start the tour from South to North then the program will run the other way around.

For all of you who want to explore Albania with 4 x 4 vehicles, this is the ideal place to make an off-road adventure. The adventure will start from the center of Albania to climbing up high in the Alps and then down to the amazing Albanian Riviera. The off-road adventure in Albania will be a unique experience, where often we will feel ourselves far from humanity, exploring its wild world yet unexplored, visits to numerous churches, temples, of thousands of colors, and archaeological sites listed as World Heritage of UNESCO.

Itineraries

Tirana airport -tirana.

Met with our guide airport towards Tirana, where we will accommodate. Later we will move along with our 4 x 4 means, about 50 km northwest of Tirana where we will test our cars in an off-road territory, cc tour of Tirana. Overnight at Hotel White Dream Tirana

Tirana – Theth

After breakfast, once we have made our bags, we will start our adventure to the northern valley of Theth, a trip which will be done through internal roads that are old, since the period of communism. Around midday, we will have approached the Albanian northern coast where we will have lunch in a simple, sea line, fishermen restaurant. Afternoon, we will pass through Buna’s river’s bridge and after we passed the town of Shkodra we will begin climbing towards the valley of Boga to arrive so in the Neck of Thore, from where we will continue the descent towards the valley of Theth. Theth is called by foreign tourists “Europe’s Last Paradise”. The village is located in the northern part of Shala’s valley, between the Alps with a rare beauty. Overnight and Dinner at Paulin Polia Guesthouse.

Theth – Rubik

Once we eat breakfast, our tour will continue along the valley of Theth, following for about 2 hours the river of Shala, and climbing after the mountain of Shoshi. This road has at least 30 years that nobody takes care of. We will eat lunch lakeside in Shkodra, which is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula and is counted as one of the oldest lakes in the world. In the afternoon we will continue to follow the old roads between the villages, also following Mat River, which will lead us to the small town of Rubik, where we will accommodate for this night at Hotel Marub

Rubik – National Park of Lura – Peshkopi

In the morning we will leave Rubik and after we have traversed Mirdita’s district, we will step into Lura’s National Park, which lies in the highland of Lura and occupies an area of 1300 ha. The territory of the park of Lura is very rugged by a row of mountain streams where the most popular are Seta, Uraka, Malla of Lura. The beauty of this park is its 14 lakes, which are glacial lakes. Lunch will be prepared by ourselves, a delicious barbecue. In the afternoon we will leave the park for addressing the city of Peshkopi, where we will accommodate. Overnight at Hotel Plaza

After Breakfast departure will be very early, as this will be the longest journey throughout your adventure in Albania. The road from Peshkopi to Bulqize will be harsh and often we will find traces of the off-road tours that our guides have made so far as this area is the best one for training and testing 4 x 4 vehicles. This day will pass along the old trails, a part of Albania which is now been abandoned for decades. There will be endless hours on this trip where we almost are not going to meet anyone. Around midday, between the mountains, we will stop for lunch, and also we can visit a masjid, a place of worship for Bektashi religion. In the afternoon, we will go down from Biza field towards Librazhdi city where the ground will be friendlier for a long time. In the late afternoon, we will have approached the city of Pogradec, where Ohrid Lake will have accompanied us for a long time. In Pogradec, we will stay in a lakeside hotel restaurant to enjoy the fresh trout, the endemic fish of Ohrid Lake. Overnight at Hotel 4*

Pogradec – Permet

After breakfast, once we have passed the city of Korca, we will travel southeast Albania, across villages and cities, where few people live now. Here it seems as if time has stopped, the roads in this part of Albania are still those of the dictatorship. We will pass through the mountains and hills that are more peaceful than those in northern Albania. In the afternoon, as soon as we arrive in Permet we can visit the thermal baths, very famous in the city. These are also known as thermal baths of Benje. There are 6 springs at the foot of the massive rocks, on both sides of the Lengarice River. These waters with a sulfur base have very high curative effects, from which 4 sources are used for chronic rheumatism, the other one for stomach diseases, and the last for skin disease. Benje thermal waters have a temperature of 26-32 ° C. Accommodation in a hotel-Villa Permet in the city of Permet.

Permet – Tepelen – Jale

After breakfast, we will be leaving towards Tepelena, along a road with fantastic landscapes. From Tepelene we will leave the city to enter between the mountains through paths that snake towards the coast, which we will only reach late in the afternoon. Around midday, after we have passed along the river bed, which lies deep within the canyon, we will have reached Kuci’s Buronjas. Lunch will be prepared by ourselves, barbecue and then we will again lead upward where after we arrive at the water’s tank we will begin the descent towards the Ionian coast. Here the off-road paths finish following later by a paved road that stretches along the coast to the seaside village of Jale.Accommodation in a seaside hotel restaurant.

Jale – Cape of Gjuhez – Vlore

After breakfast, we will be leaving towards the canyon and the famous Bay of Gjipea named differently as the “Garden of the Gods”. After a short visit to this southern pearl, we will go up to the neck of Llogara 1027 m above the sea, which offers a breathtaking view. Then we will continue the descent on the other side, along the National Park of Llogara. Shortly before noon, our off-road adventure will continue twisting inside the Karaburun Peninsula, one of the most hostile and wild places for adventurers trekking. The entire peninsula is uninhabited, except for any shepherd we can see rarely. After 2 hours off-road, the route will increasingly continue to deteriorate and the last 1 hour and 30 min will really be an off-road adventure, to arrive so at the most western point of Albania territory, in the Cape of Gjuhez. This place offers the strangest landscape and terrain that you may have ever seen. Later in the afternoon, we will come out from the peninsula to go towards the coastal city of Vlora, where we will accommodate.

Vlore – “Nene Tereza” Airport

Depending on your flight schedule we will depart to ” Nene Tereza ” Airport.

Price: 1800 euro for 2 persons, including vehicle, road assistance, accommodation, breakfast, parking, mobile SIM card with internet, and maps.

Begin your journey from Tirana to Gramsh, initially on asphalt roads. Then, traverse off-road to Sotira Waterfall and Dardhe village. Take a hike at the waterfall and continue to Dardhe for accommodation at Guest House Qafe Dardha.

From Qafe Dardhe, embark on an off-road drive to Berat through the scenic Tomorr National Park. Stop for lunch at Pupa Winery en route. Accommodation at Oda e Tomorrit or similar, with an optional evening cooking class.

• Hiking Sotira waterfall will take approx 1 hour
• Offroad journey from Gramsh to Dardhe approx. 2 Hour
• Visit the city of Gramsh and stop by the Lake
• In Dardhe village you will sleep in a local guest house and they serve meals

Drive from Berat to Osum Canyon and then to Permet, enjoying off-road sections. Explore the canyon and take time for a swim before continuing to Permet for accommodation at Dimitri Guest House.

Enjoy Permet by visiting the natural springs or driving to Peshtan or Leuse village for lunch at Mira Guest House.

Depart from Permet to Gjirokaster, with an optional morning rafting activity. Sleep at Hotel Kalemi or similar in Gjirokaster.

• Visit Gjirokastra old town

Drive from Gjirokaster to Nivica, then to Kuc and Piliur, a village with stunning views of the Ionian Sea. Overnight in Himara.

Visit Gjipe Beach, accessible by hiking, for a relaxing swim before driving to Vlora in the evening. Accommodation at Hotel Noar.

Head back to Tirana from Vlora via Zvernec Island and Karavasta Lagoon, concluding your adventurous journey.

• Day  7 Driving to Gjipe is a short distance. The hike to Gjipe is approx 40 minutes
• Driving to Vlora via Llogara pass approx 2 hours
• Day 8 – On the way to Tirana opportunity to visit Zvernes island – Karavasta Lagoon
