Our Coast Magazine

There is no shortage of things to see and do above ground on the Oregon Coast. But what about below ground? That is where the Astoria Underground Tour comes in, sharing the history and mystery of part of the abandoned tunnel system beneath the streets of Astoria.

Safely escorted through a rehabilitated section of the tunnels by guides Chad Gallup and Jeff Daly, the tour provides guests with a glimpse into the history of Astoria and the people who occupied this subterranean maze.

The tour features artifacts and fully restored rooms where people used to live. Add in a little smoke and colorful lights and you have an experience unlike any other in the region. The tours will thrill young and old with plenty of cultural import for the history buffs and a few surprises for young visitors. There are a few spots where you might have to duck your head enroute to discovery, but the tour is largely accessible to almost all explorers.

The tour, which takes about 45 minutes, is complete with historical accounts of the origin and purpose of the tunnels and the role the system played in shaping Astoria. And while most of the tunnels are closed off to the public, proprietor Daly has painstakingly recreated a small section of the original tunnels enhanced with visual effects to provide a unique perspective into a place not often seen and, until recently, largely forgotten.

— Colin Murphey

And underneath the streets and sidewalks is a time capsule of history waiting to be discovered. Astoria Underground also known as NOOOOOOO explores and surveys underground features for which they have the necessary skills and equipment to discover the long lost 100 year old tunnels. Stories are told that Shanghai tunnels were located beneath Astoria that were used to transport goods and legend has it, people, kidnapping men for forced labour aboard sailing ships. On the academic side, they carry out research into old records with photography as well as talking to elderly residents whose memories are invaluable.

Astoria, rich in history, was founded as an American fur trading post in 1811. It lies inland from the mouth of the Columbia River and is the oldest settlement in the Pacific NW. Prior to the founding of this quaint coastal town, Lewis and Clark set up camp in the region in 1806, and spent a long cold wet winter across the bay at the now reconstructed Fort Clatsop.

In and about downtown Astoria are the recreated 1811 blockhouse of Fort Astoria, the 1885 Victorian Captain George Flavel Mansion, the informative Columbia River Maritime Museum with the lighthouse ship Columbia, and the famous Astoria Column.

TOUR ITINERARY

Astoria’s waterfront.

https://vintagetourbus.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Astoria-water-front-boat-1-600x258.jpg

Astoria, founded as Fort Astoria in 1811, was a fur trading post for the Pacific Fur Trading Company. Due to its location, Astoria was important to Oregon’s early economy, not only because of the fur trade, but also because of the fishing and logging industries. However, with the collapse of the fishing industry in the late 1970s and the closure of its large canneries, and diminished coastal logging, Astoria had to reinvent itself. Today, Astoria is known as a historic destination, with many sites to see and museums to visit. With the renaissance of the downtown, Astoria offers an array of wonderful new restaurants, shops and galleries worth visiting.

ASTORIA COLUMN

https://vintagetourbus.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/View-from-Astoria-Column-1_1-600x258.jpg

Enjoy a breathtaking view of Young’s Bay, Astoria, the Megler Bridge, and the Pacific Ocean from the Astoria Column. Built in 1926, the column stands 125 ft high. Its viewing platform may be reached by climbing its 164 steps. The beautiful artwork on the exterior of the Astoria Column was painted in the Italian technique of sgraffito (using paint pigment on wet plaster) and depicts scenes of the Discovery of the Columbia River by Captain Robert Grey in 1792, the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery in 1806, and the arrival of the sailing ship Tonquin in 1811. The arrival of the latter established the Fort Astoria fur trading post.

FLEXIBLE OPTIONS

https://vintagetourbus.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/inter-Fort-Clatsop-1-600x258.jpg

Choose between Fort Clatsop Museum or Captain Flavel Victorian Mansion. Fort Clatsop offers a rich history of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The recreated fort is a living history museum with interpreters retelling the stories of Lewis and Clark and their experiences. Spoiler alert: they hated it! Find out why they were eager to get back to St. Louis. For those interested in beautiful old homes, the Captain George Flavel Mansion ,built in 1885, is one of the finest examples of Queen Anne architecture in Oregon. Flavel built this home for his retirement after working as a noted bar pilot on the Columbia River and real estate investor in downtown Astoria. The 11,600 sq ft mansion contains beautiful fir woodwork (painted to look like mahogany and burl rosewood), six ornate fireplaces and 12’ to 16’ high ceilings with plaster medallions.

COLUMBIA RIVER MARITIME MUSEUM

https://vintagetourbus.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Columbia-ship-anchor-1-600x258.jpg

The Columbia River Maritime Museum was founded to preserve the rich maritime heritage of the Columbia River region. Museum exhibits consist of the history of the Bar Pilots, the fishing industry and the role of the Coast Guard on the Columbia River Bar. Moored outside is the “Columbia” lightship, which served as a floating lighthouse to guide ships entering the mouth of the Columbia River.

Hike Description

The concentration of 19th century and early 20th century homes in these few blocks of the first American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains is unique in Oregon, particularly since these slopes somehow escaped devastating fires in 1883 and 1922 that gutted the nearby downtown area. You'll also visit the site of Fort Astoria, the first American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, as well as a small monument to the first post office west of the Rockies. A Walking Tour of Astoria pamphlet can be purchased at a few different places in Astoria, including the gift shops at the Astoria Column and the historic Flavel House .

Begin at the Flavel House, actually at its 1887 carriage house, which is now a gift shop and mini-museum. Tours of the 1886 Flavel House depart from here and cost $7. The tour will take you to two levels of this historic Queen Anne-style house that was commissioned by Captain George Flavel, a prominent Astoria citizen and pilot on the Columbia River Bar. Even if you don't take the guided tour, stroll around the outside of the building to admire the octagonal tower, wrap-around porch, and bay windows. The garden features a large sequoia, cork elms, and plantings of roses.

From the Flavel House, head up 8th Street one block, passing two 19th century homes once owned by sawmill operator Conrad Boelling, and then turn left onto Franklin Avenue. You'll pass various old homes on the left and right before you come to the 1916 Methodist Church. When you reach 11th Street, go right for one block. Two of the homes on this block of 11th Street were built by D.K. Warren, the founder of Warrenton. Turn left onto Grand and view the 1903 First Presbyterian Church on your right. At 1133 Grand and 1167 Grand, you'll see the homes of Captain John Babbidge, a steamboat operator, and the Rev. Thomas Hyland, first priest of the Grace Episcopal Church.

Next, make a left on 12th, and at the corner of 12th and Franklin, you can note the elaborate spindlework on the 1895 home of Nellie (Fisher) Wilson, later occupied by county judge T.S. Cornelius. Now you'll go right to proceed along Franklin again. In the middle of the block, at 1337 Franklin, is the 1852 home of river pilot Captain Hiram Brown. This is the oldest house in Astoria, and thus one of the oldest homes in the state of Oregon. Hiram Brown constructed one part of the house on the east side of town. Ten years later, he put it on a barge that took it down the river. Using a system of rollers, the house was hauled to its current location where he had already constructed the west section of the current building. On the left side of Franklin, pass the 1867 house of Charles Stevens, a pioneer of the Oregon Trail, poet, and book shop owner. 1410 Franklin was a boarding house where the future governor of Oregon, Oswald West, once lodged.

When you come to 15th Street, proceed uphill to Grand Avenue, but first admire the derelict and haunted-looking "second" Flavel House. This home was left to wrack and ruin by reclusive descendants of George Flavel. After being abandoned for a quarter of a century, the building was purchased in 2015 and there are plans to renovate it. Next, go left on Grand. At the corner of Grand and 16th is the 1896 Philip Stokes House: Stokes owned a clothing store in downtown Astoria. Continue on to 17th Street. The corner here displays some wonderful Victorian homes, including 1711 Grand, the 1890 home of George Sanborn, a cannery owner. Head down 17th one block and go left on Franklin for two blocks. Between 16th and 15th on your left is the 1885 Grace Episcopal Church, the oldest church in Astoria. On the right is the 1922 Masonic Temple. Turn right on 15th: on the corner is the 1910 dwelling of Chris Schmidt, a cannery owner. On the right in the middle of the block is an obelisk marking the site of the first post office west of the Rockies.

At the corner of Exchange and 15th is a partial replica of Fort Astoria, established in 1811, and the principal trading post of John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company. The site was purchased by the British-owned North West Company, later merged with the Hudson's Bay Company, in 1813 and renamed Fort George. Here, you'll also find a monument to Ranald McDonald. McDonald, the son of Hudson's Bay factor Archibald McDonald and Princess Raven, the daughter of Chinook Chief Concomly, was born at Fort Astoria in 1824. Something of a wanderer, the adult McDonald booked passage for the East on a whaling ship and, in 1848, rowed ashore the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan, a country then closed to westerners. The Japanese banished him to Nagasaki, their only trading port with the West, and decided to use him as an English teacher. For almost a year, McDonald taught the language to a select group of samurai before he was shipped home the next year. Thus, Ranald McDonald became the first native speaker of the language to teach English in Japan.

You can drop down to 15th and Duane and stop in at the Fort George Brewery and Public House for a locally-brewed pint and a bite to eat. Then return to Exchange, and proceed west for two blocks. At 16th and Exchange is Astoria's Heritage Museum, once the City Hall. Turn left on 17th and walk two and half blocks, crossing Commercial Street, to the waterfront and the Columbia River Maritime Museum . The museum is open daily ($14.00 admission) and exhibits cover the history of shipping on the lower Columbia River and the world-famous Columbia River Bar, the "Graveyard of the Pacific". Even if you don't want to go inside there are some outdoor exhibits you can take a look at, most notably the lightship Columbia and the pilot boat Peacock .

After viewing the waterfront here (See the Astoria Riverwalk Hike ), walk back to Commercial to turn left to walk through part of the downtown area, taking in the John Jacob Astor Hotel and the 1920s Liberty Theater. When you get to 8th Street, make a right to return to the Flavel House . First, however, you could check out the Oregon Film Museum at 732 Duane Street. The museum is housed in the 1914 Clatsop County Jailhouse, and exhibits displays related to movies that were filmed in Oregon.

  • marykY6676QF 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great fun with a great hostess! Let me preface this by establishing that this was what we booked, but as we were the only couple to sign up for the day, it went a bit differently. Katy offered a few options and we took off for a wonderful day seeing lots more than pubs. Loved every minute of it! Even got to meet her husband and dog! I’m sure the pub crawl would be fun, but going to Ecola State Park, seeing the Peter Iredale shipwreck, climbing the Astoria tower, and wishing I had seen ‘The Goonies’ were just part of our fun afternoon together. We were not disappointed that we were the only people, otherwise we wouldn’t have had such a special day. Katy is great fun and absolutely will enhance your experience. PS. Katy, I truly thought I had already posted a review already. Super sorry for the delay! Read more Written January 4, 2024

  • T5597JXjasonl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fun Bus Experience I won a 4hr experience for 12 guests in a trivia contest. I chose to do a bar crawl from Seaside to Astoria. Our hosts were accommodating, informative, and professional. They allowed me to choose what establishments I wanted to visit, and for how long. They also provided refreshments, a cooler, Bluetooth music, sweet lighting, and Karaoke on the bus. We were also fortunate that our they had touched base with places ahead of time - affording us free drinks and places willing to stay open later. All in all, it was a fantastic experience and many of my friends are already talking about doing another crawl in the near future. Don't hesitate to book a tour of your choice with Onward Adventures, you won't regret it! 👍👍 Read more Written December 27, 2023
  • tinarlynn 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely wonderful tour with Katie and Bill Wow ... from the very first contact, my experience with Onward Adventures was wonderful. I reached out pretty short notice and Katie responded very quickly - I then went on to book knowing that this would be a great tour and a fun day! Before the tour - Katie sent me a list of well-researched ideas on what to see as far south as Cannon Beach. We'd already done a few of the items suggested, so we collaborated on updating the itinerary before the day itself. On the day - Katie and Bill arrived at our hotel and straight away it felt like a pair of old friends showed up to show us around their area. We were celebrating 2 special occasions and the small little touches to commemorate both of those were really special (I won't go into details so that I don't spoil your surprise when you book!). Katie and Bill were knowledgeable about their local area and explained how they continue to research and learn more to make the tour-goer's experience even better. We didn't do as much touristy stuff given we are OR locals - it was all about the bar crawl for us! We made it to 9 stops (it ran a little long at no extra charge) - Katie knew when to keep us on pace and when to slow us down. She adjusted the itinerary based on getting to know us on the day and adjusting to meet our tastes and preferences. Oh, and if you are a dog person ... we were lucky enough to get some doggy love with their beautiful chocolate lab, Bailey. After the tour - Katie and Bill sent us some pictures from our special day! Book this tour - you will not regret it! Read more Written December 20, 2023

This is a great local experience that I'll always remember. Read more Written December 12, 2023
  • jordanbF689II 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best Tour Ever! Best tour and tour guide I’ve ever had!! Katie was so sweet and welcoming. I was visiting Astoria with my friend for a single day and decided to book with Katie for the half day excursion from Seaside to Astoria. I was born in Astoria and wanted to see as much as I could for the day. Katie was very easy going and didn’t make us feel rushed at all which really helped to soak up the time we had there while also managing to show us so so many cool landmarks as well! One of our favorite parts of the excursion was that Katie made it customized to us and what most interested us about the area! We wanted it to be more focused on nature so she took us to a lot of outdoor stops and we were so happy with that. She touched on topics from the “past, present, and future” of Astoria/Oregon as Katie put it and I loved getting to learn so much at the same time as see so much. I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Not only all of that, but Katie was so kind and cool! We had lunch with her and got to know her a bit and she’s awesome. I’d love to go on another adventure with her. If you are thinking about booking, do not hesitate! You’ll see so many beautiful places and Katie is knowledgeable on all of them! Completely worth it and a day I’ll never forget. 💕 Read more Written November 2, 2023

  • marykY6676QF 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely 100% we recommend this! Infinity stars for Katie and her first mate, Bill! We were the only ones signed up on our day, so it was offered to be more of a custom day and she had plenty of suggestions. These were more sightseeing and, as we hadn’t been in the area before, was more up our alley, especially if 6 hours of pub crawling with my husband, myself, and wonderfully fun, but DD, Katie, was our other choice! Seriously, we had so much fun with her and I am telling you that if you are lucky enough to be the solo booking, do not hesitate to take her up on a custom day. Had to navigate through a diversion due to a massive fire on the highway, but still made it up to see the jetty, the shipwreck, up to the Astoria Column, and on and on. We stopped for a few beers, but really was more interested in the history and scenery. They went above and beyond with cold beverages as we sat beneath the column watching the boat parade. Oh, and Bill brought chairs, too! Just an amazing day and amazing scenery and we enjoyed a few beers along the way. Pretty much perfect! Oh, if you’re a Goonies fan, she knows lots!
