15 Best Things to Do in Brno (Czech Republic)

Brno is the Czech Republic’s second city and has a hardworking reputation, although commerce is a just a small part of this quirky city’s story.

Set where  the Svitava and Svratka Rivers meet, Brno was capital of Moravia from the 1100s right up to the communist era. Naturally, a lot of heritage remains, and you can take in a great deal of Gothic and baroque sights on the cobblestone streets of the Old Town. But what really gives Brno its identity is its devotion to the weird, wonderful and downright creepy.

Let us explain, in our run down of the best things to do in Brno .

1. Villa Tugendhat

Villa Tugendhat

Nothing scary about this one.  Open daily for tours, Villa Tugendhat is up there with Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye in Paris as a prototype for modern architecture. Built from 1928-30, it was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and is a UNESCO-listed masterwork of functionalism.

This building changed the game thanks to its open floor plan and wall-sized rear windows. Villa Tugendhat’s history is as important as its design. The Tugendhats were a Jewish couple and were forced to flee Brno after 1938. The villa became a base for the Gestapo, and then as quarters for the Soviet army.

It wasn’t until 1967 that Greta Tugendhat returned and the restoration process began.

2. The Old Town Hall

Brno Old Town Hall

Here you get an idea of Brno’s enduring sense of fun, as well as a neat view of the city from the roost of the tower. On approach you might notice that one of the turrets on the Town Hall’s decorative facade looks a bit skewed.

The story goes that Anton Pilgram, the building’s architect was screwed out of money by Brno’s City Council and his payback was to mess with the design. The other version holds that he was simply too drunk to get it right.

The building goes back to the 1200s, and formed part of the city defences during the famous siege by Swedish forces in 1645. More on that later.

3. The Town Hall’s Curios

Brno Dragon and Wheel

This is where it starts to get a bit wacky. Hanging from the ceiling in the passage beneath the tower is what looks like a large taxidermied crocodile. But don’t be fooled;  you’re now in the domain of the legendary Brno dragon.

In the city’s earliest years this beast terrorised the population and its livestock, and eventually a butcher got the creative idea of filling a fur sack with lime. After the dragon devoured the sack it needed to quench its thirst and drank so much water it died.

On the wall here is the Brno wheel, a wagon wheel supposedly built and delivered from the city of Teplice 45 kilometres away in just 12 hours as part of a medieval bet. It’s a symbol for Brno’s work ethic.

4. Gregor Mendel’s Abbey and Museum

Gregor Mendel's Abbey and Museum

The godfather of genetics spent almost his whole life in Brno, and stands today as one of the 19th century’s most important scientists. At the Abbey of Saint Thomas you can visit the garden in which he conducted his famed experiments on pea plants that helped him discover the secrets of heredity.

For a bit more insight, the Mendel Museum outside the old town has detailed exhibits that shed light on his methods, and how early experiments breeding mice attracted the disapproval of the church.

You can also find out about his experiments in the field of beekeeping, but these have made a less  impact on the course of history.

5. Špilberk Castle

Špilberk Castle

As the seat of the rulers of Moravia, this building has been around for almost as long as Brno has existed. And as you might expect this has left the structure with a range of styles, from Romanesque to baroque. It’s a large hilltop fortress that has served all sorts of roles and seen a lot of action in its time.

Like the Town Hall Špilberk Castle helped repel the Swedish Army during a siege in the Thirty Years’ War in the 1600s.

At this time it also doubled as a prison to house and torture protestants, given that Brno was a catholic city. You’ll learn at the museum here why Špilberk was a no place to end up if you belonged to the wrong denomination.

6. Capuchin Monastery

Capuchin Monastery

And the morbid vibes keep coming, because the Capuchin Monastery on Kapucínské Square is no place for the faint of heart. The exterior and ground floor are splendid, and offer no indication of what lies beneath.

The building is in the baroque style, with an ornate rococo interior, including a memorable fresco and a preserved library with shelves of ancient volumes climbing to ornate ceilings.

Go downstairs though and you’ll be confronted by an 18th-century crypt where members of the Capuchin order and other important figures of the time are lying around mummified like they’ve decided to take 200-year naps.

7. Modern Architecture

Villa Stiassni

Alongside Villa Tugendhat, Brno had a design boom in the early-20th century when some of the most beautiful landmarks beyond the old town were built. Brno is now peppered with some 70 functionalist buildings.

Real architecture buffs can download a list and track them down on a walking tour. If you’re willing to put in the legwork you’ll be rewarded with some memorable yet unfrequented sights, nearly all of which continue to serve their intended public and residential roles.

In Brno-center keep an eye out for Žáckuv rodinný dum, Bassova vila, Haasova vila, state-of-the-art residences built for Brno’s elite in the 20s and 30s.

8. Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul

Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul, Brno

The Swedish siege of Brno in 1645 left a big impression on the city, and put the clocks at this dominant cathedral in a bit of a time warp.

In yet another of Brno’s quirky stories, it is said that the Swedes agreed to give up on their plans to take the city if they hadn’t managed to conquer it by mid-day on the August 15 1645.

Resourceful as ever, the Brno defenders decided to improve their odds and brought the clocks at the cathedral an hour forward to chime at 11 instead of 12. To this day the noon chimes take place at 11.

9. Brno Underground

Labyrinth under the Cabbage market in Brno

A maze of tunnels and chambers sits underneath the Cabbage Market in the old town. In 2011 these were opened to the public as part of a compelling 40-minute walking tour. The square above dates back to the 1200s and many of the passageways that weave underneath are also from this time.

You’ll see how food was preserved here in the medieval era, visit an historic wine cellar, and will also be able to peruse an authentic alchemist’s laboratory.

As ever in historic Brno, there’s a dark side. Looming underground is a real pillory, a public torture device for criminals in the middle ages.

10. The Cabbage Market

Brno Cabbage Market

Above the underworld is a marketplace that has also been in use since the 1200s. You can still buy vegetables at the farmers’ market, as well as taking a look at some of the monuments around.

One of these is the Parnas Fountain with its statue of Hercules. It is said that in old times fishmongers showcased their stock by letting their carp swim in the fountain waters.

On the south side Reduta Theatre is a concert hall that goes back to renaissance times. In 1767 an 11-year-old Mozart performed here with his sister.

11. Brno MotoGP

Brno MotoGP

Another thing about Brno that puts it on the world map is the city’s motorcycling circuit. Brno has been connected to this motorsport since 1930 and for many years the Masaryk Circuit here was a perilous street race on cobblestones.

When this course was laid with asphalt in the 1960s Brno became a mainstay of the World Grand Prix, and the street circuit was eventually replaced by a purpose-built venue in 1987.

MotoGP comes to town in August every year, bringing with it three days of high-octane action and the best riders in the world.

12. The Church of Saint James

Church of Saint James, Brno

A beautiful national monument, this church has survived intact for almost the last 500 years and dates originally to the 1200s.

It’s a lovely Gothic building, with soaring vaulted ceilings, but recent excavations have uncovered a rather sinister feature underground.

If you dare you can step down to what is the largest ossuary in Europe after the Catacombs in Paris. It opened its doors in 2012 and is crammed with the remains of some 50,000 people, their bones and skulls arranged in ornamental designs and stacks.

13. Macocha Abyss

Macocha Abyss

This sinkhole, half an hour north of the city, is like something out of a fantasy movie. The Macocha Abyss is part of the Punkva cave system and draws both serious subterranean adventurers and casual tourists who want to explore the deepest sinkhole in Central Europe.

The Abyss came about when the ceiling of a deep cave collapsed, and the feature is part of a vast and labyrinthine network of tunnels that you can navigate on a guided tour on foot and then by boat once you approach the cathedral-like Abyss.

In the open air is a trail that snakes through the rocky scenery is favoured by walkers and cyclists.

14. Brno Dam

Brno Dam

The best time to head down to Brno’s dam is after sunset at the end of May and start of June when teams from around the world vie for the top awards at the Ignis Brunensis fireworks competition.

This started out as a mere exhibition, but in 2003 things started to get serious and hi-tech pyrotechnics companies started using the event as a chance to show the marketplace what they could do. This sense of competition is great news for the public, as the increasingly elaborate displays are reflected wonderfully by the waters of the reservoir.

By day people flock to the wooded shores of the reservoir in summer for boating, water sports and bike rides.

15. Brno’s Parks

Denis Gardens

Lužánky Park was the first public park in what is now the Czech Republic, which has earned it national monument status. The Jesuits played a part in its foundation, using these grounds for meditation and rest, and when they were expelled in the late 1790s Lužánky was laid out in the French formal style, later becoming more of a botanic garden with an ornamental stream.

Denis Gardens meanwhile connect Peter and Paul Cathedral with Špilberk Castle.  For those who have the energy to tackle the slope the park is full of surprises, with 19th-century gazebos and an elegant colonnade.

There are lookout platforms offering what is surely the most romantic view in Brno.

Brno, the second largest city in the Czech republic will pleasantly surprise you with so many interesting things to do and see! Probably one of the most exciting adventures is the Brno Underground, a phenomenal labyrinth of corridors, cellars and crypts. Let your Brno travel guide lead you into exploring these medieval corridors where the cold starkness and serene quietness is a pleasant relief from the hubbub of the streets above.  The architecture of the city is spectacular and diverse; from the gothic towers and baroque interiors of the cathedral of St Peter and St Paul that grace the city skyline to the iconic modern lines of Villa Tugendhat, a World Heritage site. The architectural and religious heritage of this Moravian capital showcased by churches, castles and monasteries is complemented by culture, an important facet of Czech life. The imposing but statuesque Mahen Theatre, built in 1881, was the first theatre in Europe that installed Thomas Edison’s electric light bulbs. To bring it all together, leafy parks abound and restaurants and sidewalk cafes provide pleasant relief from all the walking; choose any one to try out an assortment of delicious and beautifully crafted pastries and aromatically fragranced coffee.

Traditional half-timbered houses in Rennes

A local’s guide to Rennes, France: Brittany’s medieval but vibrant capital

Chef Arnaud Guilloux leads the way to the best street food, galleries, music haunts

Rennes is a great place for foodies. The speciality is a galette-saucisse – Breton street food. It’s a sausage wrapped in a buckwheat galette, maybe with onions, but strictly no sauce (if you’re Breton). It’s sold in the main market in Place des Lices, in smaller Les Halles market, and by the many food trucks outside the football stadium on match days. My restaurant, Coquille , is on rue Nantaise, which has become a little gastronomic hub close to the city centre. We serve dishes using local produce, such as fish, seafood and vegetables from small market gardeners, but the cuisine is influenced by my time working in Asia. Also on the street is the very traditional Café Breton , a real institution with an extensive menu of classics and modern dishes. There’s also a super Thai restaurant, Chawp Shop Kphet . Pierre Restaurant de Copains , run by a friend who was a finalist in Top Chef [the French version of MasterChef], is a lively, trendy place to hang out. You could spend days eating on just this street.

Inspiration

The Musée de Bretagne is really interesting – a journey through the history of Brittany and its people – and has some works many will recognise, including sketches by greats such as Picasso and Gauguin. The most famous is Le Nouveau-né, by 17th-century artist Georges de la Tour. There are also pieces by artists inspired by Brittany, such as Narcisse Chaillou and Octave Penguilly, plus regular exhibitions of modern art and sculpture.

market day in Rennes

Neighbourhood

Rennes is pretty small, so it’s hard to pick out a particular neighbourhood, but the area around Place Saint-Germain, just next to Saint-Germain church, is great. It has an attractive little square and good places to eat and shop; a new Metro line opening later this year will have a stop here. Behind the church is an amazing Japanese restaurant called Le Fuji : it has been there for about 30 years and is really authentic. For shopping there’s a fantastic bookshop, Librairie Le Failler , which does interesting editions. And across the river, interesting stores on rue Vasselot include Wakatépé , which only sells ethical goods – organic cotton and other sustainable clothing, and vegan shoes.

Green space

Parc du Thabor, Rennes.

The main park in Rennes is Parc du Thabor, which dates from the 18th century and is on the highest hill in the city. When it first opened, only men were admitted. It has formal gardens, a bandstand and an aviary, but there’s a prettier park nearby: Parc Oberthür is small but more charming, quieter and a bit wilder. It’s the garden of the old residence of print maker François-Charles Oberthür and his wife, Marie Hamelin. I love taking my kids there – it has some ancient trees and a lake with lots of birdlife.

Bar Le Doujezu is a renowned hangout in Rennes. The name is a play on the words for “sweet Jesus” and it attracts a good mix of ages. The music is quite rocky and the bar top is set on an old Mercedes, which is cool. South of the centre, 1988 Live Club has guest DJs from all over Europe. It’s very popular with techno fans, but there’s something for everyone there. I’m a big fan of rock music, and even though we don’t really have a rock scene in France like in Britain, we do have a lot of concerts. I like The MeM , a little way out of town along the river: it’s a great venue, like a big-top tent, and there are some riverside bars, or guinguettes , nearby. A favourite, just reopened for summer 2022, is La Basse Cour , on an old farm.

Where to stay

The Magic Hall hotel (doubles from €68 room-only) is a cool place to stay, especially if you’re a music fan. There’s a soundproofed music room and the bedrooms are all different. The downstairs area is like being in someone’s house, with an open kitchen and lounge area.

Chef Arnaud Guilloux was born and grew up near Rennes, but worked all over the world before returning home to the Breton city in 2017

Excellent tour and a better experience. Our tour guide Zdenek was professional, courteous and most of all extremely knowledgeable. He provided insights that made us appreciate Brno and its interesting history. I especially want to say thank you to Zdenek for being so accommodating with our tour's start time. It allowed us to complete all we wanted to do in Brno. Thank you and God Bless. John from USA
We had a great day. Everything was as planned in the description. The guide arrived on time to pick us at our hotel. He was fluently speaking english and was easy to understand for non native english speaking people. The guide was very nice and had a lot of informations to tell us about the trip. We went to visit both castles (one only outside and the second one was inside too). Then we finish with a walk in the town of Mikulov. All the sites worth the visit. We spent all day visiting like it was planned. The price for the day was very reasonnable considering it's the usual price we pay normally for a tour but this time it was a private tour. Pierre-Olivier from Canada
Thank you for organising this trip for me. We enjoyed our trip a lot. My friend who is a wine lover was very impressed with your national winery and is definitely going back there at some point in the future. We liked Josef - he made stops at places which we enjoyed a lot and we had some nice conversations with him. Please give him my best regards. Anna from Poland
Thank you very much for yesterday's tour. We really enjoyed it and we couldn't have asked for something better. We will definitely recommend you to our friends back in Malta. Bjorn from Malta
We booked three day trips with Lenka and myself and my wife enjoyed every day, Lenka was very professional and didn't go over the top with information, she was always on time and a nice person to talk to . I would recommend anyone to book trips with her. Her knowledge about the area is very Impressive and you can tell she likes her job and is proud about the area David and Annette
My husband and I spent two full days with Lenka exploring Moravia. We learnt so much in that time from our friendly, informative guide.money well spent. Robyn from Australia
My husband and I booked a wine tour to the Moravian region in the Czech Republic. Lenka was great and very knowledgeable about the area and wines. We had a great day exploring and tasting some fabulous wines. She picked us up at our hotel and drove us around which was a great way to see more of the country. We had a wonderful day and truly enjoyed our tour. Adriana from USA
Lenka es una guía estupenda, sabe de todo, muy amena y a los niños se les pasó el día super rápido. Sus visitas están bien planeadas, explicadas y es muy profesional. Y lo mejor de todo es que se adapta a las necesidades del grupo. Veronica
We spent an afternoon with Lenka visiting Lednice-Valtice and Mikulov from Brno, and it was definitely the BEST tour we have ever been on. Lenka is very knowledgeable about the sites and the area, organised as well as easy-going, ready to take pics as well as provide moments of solitary wine-sipping in the sun. We felt as though we were old friends chatting away in her car. The area is beautiful and the company was lovely. Highly recommended and absolutely worth every cent! Thanks for a gorgeous day! Louise
Had a superb day with Lenka. We did the wine-tasting and UNESCO site s tour and it was very enjoyable. Great variety of places to visit and Lenka’s knowledge on the sights and wines was very impressive. Would absolutely recommend this tour and Lenka was great as our guide. Would definitely use her services again Gill from Scotland
I am an expat living in Prague. I was visiting Brno with a friend and we wanted to go on a wine tour of the South Moravian region. We found Lenka's tour described online and it sounded perfect for our needs - some sightseeing plus a visit to some cellars and other places to drink some wine. What we received was exactly that and it was a great day. The tour of Lednice was a great start to the day with a walk around the castle grounds and gardens and later we visited the wine c ellars in Valtice. Later we visited Mikulov - the home of the wine country of South Moravia. We had the extra surprise of enjoying some sparkling wine with an amazing countryside view. Really good. Lenka was very flexible with timings and pace and she was able to suggest what to do and when without any hassle or worry. We were dropped off at the end of the day at the train station with good time to catch our train back to Prague. Thank you Lenka for a great introduction to South Moravia! Martin from Prague
You could not ask for a better tour guide than Lenka! She knows the area so well, speaks impeccable English, and takes the time to understand her clients interests so she can maximize their experience. Brno is a wonderful city with many hidden gems and touring it with Lenka was one of the highlights of my visit! Carol photographer from USA
This is our 23rd trips to Europe with more than 2 weeks stay over the past ten years alone . we've been to every country in Europe ( except Iceland ). Never expected that a trip could be arranged to visit 35 cities over 3 countries, with 20 UNESCO site. All by starting 9.00 AM each morning and return to hotel not later than 5.00 PM . Lenka managed just that in a mere twelve days. she had to drive for 400 hours over 2000 KM to do so, and we thoroughly enjoy every minutes of the trip. Actually I can count this trip as the best I had ever had. Can not praise Lenka sufficiently with my words. My advice to you all, book her before she retired to administrative work once and for all. Danny from Hong Kong
Lenka was a great travel guide! I did the half day trip to the nearby Moravian Karst (cave system) and she planned everything for me, picked me up at my hotel, and helped translate the cave tour for me. The cave tours are not in English, so it was very helpful to have someone who could translate information into English. The caves were so beautiful, and the boatride on the underground river was such a unique experience. I was a little nervous about going on a tour by myself with someone I did now know, but Lenka was super nice and a fun person to spend the day with. I would highly recommend her to anyone!   Elissa from USA
Lenka is a wonderful, knowlegable guide. You immediately sense how much she enjoys meeting people and sharing her love of the sites, people and area with others. I highly recommend her! Catherine from USA
Lenka had beautifully planned my autumn day trip outside Brno. She knew the right spots and had wonderful stories to go with each part of our trip. The trip itself was well designed and hosted with a mix of culture, wine tasting, and castle hopping. I strongly recommend this trip out of Brno if you have a day Bhargavi Bhargavi from NY
Lenka was amazing! before we arrived she had done research on our family at the local city offices and the public library and started the tour with info we did not even know ourselves. I had 3 very senior citizens with me wanting to visit their old homes, schools and churches and she could adjust the pace of the day effortlessly . Friendly ,cheerful and thorough. I highly recommend her Kenneth Ward from USA
Lenka of Brno Day Trips is your ideal choice for your Driver/Guide for tourist sites in Brno and other cities in the region. Lenka has reasonable costs, good knowledge and arrives on time every time. She has a positive attitude so it is like a friend showing you around who has knowledge. I spent 3 days with Lenka. My interest was World Heritage Sites. It was educational and fun.  All of the logistical issues were handled smoothly so I could focus on my interests with no worries. I recommend Lenka highly.   Don Parrish, the most traveled man in the world
We had a lovely day trip from Brno to the Valtice-Lednice-Mikulov area with our very knowledgeable and overall excellent guide. With pleasant surprise also included in the package. We presented our wishes for the day-trip goals and she came up with a customizable, very smooth and intriguing plan for the trip with breathtaking locations and relaxed atmosphere.Overall my wife and me are very, very happy with our day trip and ended up dozing off on the way back. Pauli from Finland
I'm a US traveler and was staying in Brno to see the Moravian Fields to get good landscape pictures. I also got recommende d Mikoluv! Lenka was amazing to gettin g me to both! She took me to one of the most scenic hikes I've ever been to, with spectacula r views, and great pictures. She didn't know much about the Moravian Fields initially but found the perfect location after I asked - she was very flexible and accommodat ing! Mike from Arisona

Brno Guide

Hi, Thank you for visiting  Brno Day Trips . Let me introduce myself briefly and what Brno Day Trips are about. My name is Lenka and I am Slovak living in Brno since 2011. I work in the tourism business since I finished my studies at the university in Slovakia.

For several years I have been arranging vacations for tourists who decide to visit Central Europe. I like my work very much. I am in contact with tourists from around the world and I do not have to move from my home thanks to the Internet. Yes, it is a big advantage to be in contact with the whole world from your living room, however, after some time you realize, that you miss talking with your clients face to face.

During my free time, I have been doing many private excursions out of  Brno  for my friends and my family who came to visit me. They all were surprised what beautiful places are hidden in Moravia, they have not heard about before, even though they live in relatively short distance from Brno.

I have realized that Moravia has so much to offer and that Brno is an excellent starting point located not far away from all the main tourist attractions. One day while I was thinking about an upcoming family visit an idea emerged.

What if I make a list of my favorite trips and activities I do with my friends and offer it as private day trips in and out of Brno for those who individually visit Brno? The more I was thinking about it the more I liked the idea. So I started to prepare myself to become a guide. I attended a local class to get the certificate and I become to learn Czech history, art, culture, and so on. It took me 2 years while the idea matured to the point where we are now.

So let me again welcome you to  Brno Day Trips , my project where you can find  Out of Brno excursions . My main goal is to present to you, according to my opinion,  the most interesting and beautiful places around Brno  but not in immediate proximity only. I have included even remote places which can be still reached within a day.

The offer you can currently see now is not complete. Even though the area I want to cover is not so big there are still places waiting to be discovered and I hope  you will be my inspiration too . Do not hesitate to contact me with any suggestions for visiting you have read about in your traveler book and it is not listed in the offer.

I sincerely hope, that this website will inspire you to stay a bit longer in Brno as you originally planned to discover Moravia with me or on your own. For more tips please follow me on Instagram or Facebook .

Enjoy your time in Brno!
