This time last January, preparations were in full swing for a flurry of gigs across the UK to celebrate Independent Venue Week. This year a more innovative approach is required and as ever, Horizons (the music project from BBC Wales and the Arts Council of Wales) has stepped up to support and promote breakthrough artists from the current Welsh music scene. Each day this week, the team will be broadcasting sessions from a different grassroots venue, bringing a cross section of musicians and genres.

Ar Log, the prolific and iconic group that has taken Welsh music to over 20 countries and three continents are this year celebrating 40 years since their first performance. They will celebrate the landmark with a tour of Wales starting with a special concert at Pwllheli Golf Club on Saturday, March 5.

The tour, which includes a gig at Ty Gwerin on the National Eisteddfod Maes in Abergavenny in August, will include guest appearances from Dafydd Iwan.

Formed back in August 1976 specifically to represent Wales at the Celtic Festival in Lorient, Brittany, the band went on to tour full time for seven years, spending nine months of each year abroad.

The original 1976 members were Dave Burns (guitar), Dafydd Roberts (triple harp, flute), his elder brother Gwyndaf (harp and bass) and Iolo Jones (violin).

They were brought together by the Welsh Committee of the Lorient Festival who were eager a Welsh traditional group should represent Wales at that year’s Interceltique festival in Lorient.

During the event they shared a stage with The Dubliners , who had never heard Welsh traditional folk music played before. The suggested the four musicians should stay together and turn professional.

On the journey from Wales to Brittany they had to think of a name and to reflect their status they called themselves Ar Log which means ‘For Hire’.

Folk group Ar Log in 1976 Dafydd and Gwyndaf Roberts, Iolo Jones and Dave Burns (seated)

Between 1978 and 1996 they managed to release 10 albums and they continue to promote Welsh traditional music and songs 40 years down the line.

In 1982 and 1983, Ar Log embarked on two tours with Dafydd Iwan. The first tour Taith 700 was to mark the 700th anniversary of the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282.

The tours produced two albums (Rhwng Hwyl a Thaith and Yma o Hyd).

By 1988, Iolo Jones had returned as a second fiddler and the group rejoined Dafydd Iwan in 1988 for a celebration of the singer’s quarter-centennial on the road.

However, by now, Ar Log had essentially become a part-time operation, as the group’s members had found full-time employment elsewhere. That remains the case to this day.

Tickets for the Pwllheli concert on March 5th are available in Tonnau, Pwllheli or by phoning 01758 612903. Proceeds from the concert will go towards GƔyl Gerdd Dant LlƷn ac Eifionydd 2016.

Live updates, dave portnoy blasts pga tour ‘morons’ as rbc heritage delay threatens $1.6 million bet.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Dave Portnoy put the “morons” at the PGA Tour on blast as they messed with his bottom line.

The RBC Heritage had to be suspended until Monday morning due to darkness following a lengthy delay stemming from lightning in South Carolina.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler ultimately won the event upon its resumption Monday.

Bad weather suspended Sunday's RBC Heritage.

That delay seemingly irked Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, since he placed a $100,000 two-leg parlay featuring Scheffler winning the tournament that would net him roughly $1.59 million.

With Scheffler leading the pack entering Sunday, Portnoy teed off on the PGA Tour for a move that potentially could have cost him six figures.

“The @PGATOUR f–ks everything up,” Portnoy tweeted Sunday night at 6:10 p.m. ET during the delay. “Are they the only morons on the planet without a weather forecast? How do you not move up tee times today? Pure unadulterated incompetence.”

Why not us? Scottie +Celts. đŸ€. #DKPartner pic.twitter.com/bodomjgIG4 — Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) April 20, 2024

Portnoy seems to have a point with this one.

The PGA Tour posted on its website that Sunday could include “a little bit of weather late in the day,” highlighting increased odds of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, along with “gusty winds (potentially reaching 20-25 MPH) and heavy rainfall.”

The website even had a graphic showcasing the poor weather that could be on its way.

Scheffler, who entered the day leading the field, and Sepp Straka were scheduled for the final tee time at 1:55 p.m. ET, which pushed up against the window for when the bad weather would start.

The graphic showcasing the weather on Sunday.

Well, apparently the Good Lord wanted to disrupt the best game of their lives, as play had to be suspended at 4:28 p.m. ET on Sunday with groups yet to finish their final rounds.

Scheffler had just started the 12th hole and led the field by four strokes at the time.

“We were hoping to play through this; we felt like we had another 25 minutes left of this heavy rain and were then going to get a break on the back end,” Mark Dusbabek, the PGA Tour’s senior director lead TV Rules & Video Analyst, said on the CBS broadcast, as transcribed by pgatour.com. “We had lightning unfortunately pop up four miles away; just suddenly caught us in, so we had to stop play for this. We’re going to see how things go here and make a decision.

“The course was not unplayable. It wasn’t because of the rain. It was just because the lightning popped up.”

The PGA Tour announced at roughly 5:30 p.m. ET that play would resume at 6 p.m., only to provide an update approximately 15 minutes later that play would not begin at the time.

Portnoy first sounded off on X shortly after 6 p.m.

“This rain delay in the RBC is a DISASTER. You know Scottie doesn’t want to be there,” Portnoy tweeted .

He later posted : “Can the @PGATOUR call a tournament like a baseball game?”

The biggest threat to a Scheffler victory was his vow to leave any tournament if his wife Meredith goes into the labor as the couple is expecting their first child in the coming weeks.

That storyline dominated at Augusta last week as Scheffler rolled to a victory in the first major of the season.

Scottie Scheffler ultimately won the event.

Rounds resumed at 7 p.m. ET but the good vibes didn’t last long as play at Harbour Town Golf Links had to stop due to darkness at 7:45 p.m. ET.

Portnoy bashed that decision while using a hashtag featuring PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan.

“So we get to play for 15 minutes? Hey dummies can you address why you didn’t tee off 2 hours earlier? #PGATour #idiots #monahan ,” he posted.

Scheffler had one of his few hiccups of the tournament when play resumed, hitting his second shot on 15 into the water.

However, he was still able to make par on the par 5 by knocking a wedge to 11 feet and rolling in the putt.

Dave Portnoy was not pleased with the PGA Tour.

“So #scottie hit a ‘mud ball’ into the water? I hope the idiots at the @PGATOUR are happy with the mockery they’ve made out of this. Coulda just started earlier but nope. #morons,” he posted.

Scheffler had completed 15 holes and led the field by five, with the PGA Tour all but saying he had wrapped up a victory.

“Scheffler’s final three holes could be a formality,” the website read.

Play resumed Monday at 8 a.m. and Scheffler won by finishing 19-under par.

Portnoy finally could relax.

He posted : “Scottie Scheffler may be my favorite athlete of all time. #thankyouscottie.”

The other half of the parlay — the Celtics to win the NBA title — got off to a good start with Boston dominating the Heat, 114-94, in Game 1 on Sunday afternoon.

Boston is the No. 1 seed in the East and the favorite to win the title after a dominant 64-18 regular season.

Billy Horschel wins PGA Tour event amid historic finish, but there’s a catch

Billy Horschel won the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic, his first PGA Tour win since 2022.

Share All sharing options for: Billy Horschel wins PGA Tour event amid historic finish, but there’s a catch

Corales Puntacana Championship - Final Round

Eleven months ago, after the first round of the Memorial Tournament, Billy Horschel stood in front of the media and fought back tears as he talked about his lack of confidence.

He had just fired a 12-over 84, which served as a metaphor for his struggles throughout the 2023 season. Horschel missed 10 cuts a year ago, which led to him missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs .

As such, Horschel did not meet the qualification requirements to play in this week’s RBC Heritage —the fifth Signature Event of the 2024 season . But he still wanted to play, knowing that his game was trending in the right direction.

So, he teed it up at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic, an opposite full-field event.

The decision paid off.

Corales Puntacana Championship

Horschel began the final round three strokes behind Wesley Bryan, but he stormed past him and all the others to win by two. The former Florida Gator signed for a 9-under 63, which tied the course record, to win for the first time on the PGA Tour since the 2022 Memorial.

“This game of golf is so fickle. I think you can put a lot into it and get everything you want out of it,” Horschel said after his win on Sunday.

“But I knew in my 14 years, 13 years previously on the PGA Tour, that I had the ability, I had the talent. I just needed to continue to work hard, do the right things, and continue to believe that good stuff was going to come to the forefront at some point in time.”

Even though his victory did not come against the likes of Scottie Scheffler , Wyndham Clark , Rory McIlroy, or any other elite PGA Tour players, Horschel still holds this win—and other opposite field events—in high regard.

“The PGA Tour has a lot of tournaments, and it’s tough for every tournament to get its due. Opposite-field events have been crucial for many players coming up the ranks,” Horschel explained.

“Look at Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland winning in Puerto Rico, Matt Wallace won this. So listen, it’s another opportunity to play, it’s another opportunity to become a better player, to get that win on the PGA Tour. These events are crucial to the PGA Tour in the sense of the growth of the development of the players on the PGA Tour.”

8-under thru 12 @BillyHo_Golf leads by two after an eagle @CoralesChamp . pic.twitter.com/qkAjIiaKmI — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 21, 2024

Horschel’s victory in the Dominican Republic vaults him from 76th to 45th in the FedEx Cup rankings. The top 70 players earn entry into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, so yes, this win carries significant weight.

But Horschel would not have been able to finish the job without his strong psyche and ability to handle pressure down the stretch.

“I don’t like talking about myself but growing up, I always wanted the ball when I was a pitcher; I always wanted to be the guy at battle trying to drive in the winning run; I always wanted to have it on me,” Horschel explained.

“I think growing up and having that mentality, I have grown into Ioving being in the lead. I love having that spotlight on me; I love having everything on me, knowing that if I mess up, it’s my fault, and I am the one who can control my destiny. I’ve always been really good up near the lead, and today, I showed that a little bit.”

Horschel made five birdies on the front nine to soar toward the top of the leaderboard at the midway point of his round. True to himself, he did not fold down the stretch, but rather, he thrived. His eagle at the par-5 12th gave him a two-shot lead with six holes to play, and he never relinquished it.

How to read the Tour du Mont Blanc markers and signs in France, Italy and Switerland

by Trekking Mont Blanc | 29 November 2022 | Tour du Mont Blanc: itineraries , Tour du Mont Blanc: tips

Le balisage du Tour du Mont Blanc en France, en Italie et en Suisse

The Tour du Mont Blanc was first marked between 1950 and 1952, making it  the first truly international GRŸ . Indeed, it was in 1947 that the Comité National des Sentiers de Grande Randonnée (CNSGR) was born. Three years later, the CNSGR Savoie, led by Marc de Seyssel, gave birth to the first route of the TMB between three cross-border regions in France, Italy and Switzerland.

Since then, the Tour du Mont Blanc has undergone several changes and has been expanded with many variants. At present, the official route covers a distance of 160 to 170 kilometres and 10,000 metres of ascent.

To enable hikers and trekkers to find their way around the trails,  the signposting of the Tour du Mont Blanc  has been the subject of particular attention since its creation. It is also regularly maintained by the signposters of the three countries that the route crosses.

How are the trails of the Tour du Mont Blanc marked? What to use during your trek around the highest summit in Western Europe?

In this article, find out how to orient yourself on the trails and learn how to recognize the Tour du Mont Blanc markings in France, Italy and Switzerland! 🙂

How to find your way around the TMB?

The official topo-guide of the tour du mont-blanc.

On the TMB hiking trails, the markers are clear and numerous, allowing you to easily find your way.

However,  don’t go off half-cocked without any other way of visualizing your route!

Before setting off, get hold of  the official Tour du Mont-Blanc topo-guide from the French Hiking Federation . The main route of the classic Tour du Mont Blanc and several variants are described in great detail and the 1:30,000 scale maps will allow you to easily find your route for the day.

In addition, it contains a lot of useful information for your stay in the Mont Blanc region: walking times, altitudes, public transport, accommodation, mountain refuges, campsites, grocery stores, train stations, etc

You can find it in most bookstores that have a section dedicated to hiking, in sports stores (Decathlon, Au Vieux Campeur, Chullanka, etc.) and on the FFR website.

Which topographic maps to prepare the Tour du Mont Blanc?

Several hiking maps allow you to easily find your way on the hiking trails of the Tour du Mont Blanc.

The first one is  the official IGN map of the Tour du Mont Blanc . At a scale of 1:50000, this map allows you to find your way around the entire TMB route.

If you wish to have more precise maps, you will have to get the two following IGN TOP 25 maps:

  • Map 3630 OT – Chamonix, Mont Blanc Massif
  • map 3531 ET- Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Massif du Mont Blanc

As the name suggests, these maps are at a scale of 1:25000, which will give you a more accurate view of your route.

Finally, if you wish to make a  customised Tour du Mont-Blanc itinerary  of several days (by doing it partially or by taking the Haute-Route, for example), you can make your own map with the  IGN’s customised map service .

Cross-border cooperation for guidance

Throughout your Tour du Mont Blanc, you will be able to easily find your way around the main route thanks to the  signposts  that line it. Usually placed at crossroads, these vertical signs provide information on where you are, where you are going next and how long it will take to get there.

In all three countries, you will also find  a common logo  that will allow you to identify the route of the Tour du Mont Blanc: the inscription “TMB” and an arrow marked in black in a green square.

However, apart from this logo, the markings may vary from country to country.

Signs on the TMB trails

The Tour du Mont Blanc markers country by country

In France, Italy and Switzerland, the TMB route is indicated by markers placed on trees, rocks, poles, walls and different elements of the landscape. This marking is different in the three countries crossed by the TMB.

The Tour du Mont Blanc markers in France

In France, the paths of the Tour du Mont Blanc GR are indicated by  a white and a red line . When they are parallel, continue straight ahead. At intersections, they form an arrow to the left or right. Finally, if the white line and the red line form a cross, it means that it is not in this direction that you should go.

You will also be able to see the markings of the  Grande Randonnée de Pays (GRP) trails , a yellow and red line, as well as those of the  Petite Randonnée (PR) trails , a yellow line.

The Tour du Mont Blanc markers in Italy

The markings of the Tour du Mont Blanc in Italy are indicated by  yellow marks . They can be lines, arrows, circles, triangles or a diamond with a black border in which “TMB” is written.

Moreover, in Italy, on the signposts, you will see different letters indicating  the difficulty of the hiking route :

  • T : marked walking trails, easy walks and hikes.
  • E : marked hiking trails with no particular technical difficulties.
  • EE : marked hiking trails that may have difficulties such as slippery slopes, late snow, occasional scree, or the need to put your hands down, for example.

The Tour du Mont Blanc signposting in Switzerland

In Switzerland, you can find  two types of markings on the TMB course . They can be colour coded on the signposts or marked on rocks, trees, etc.

The yellow markers indicate hiking trails with no technical difficulties.

The white-red-white markers indicate mountain hiking routes that may include exposed or technical sections.

New augmented reality walking tour reveals what Third Ward ghost signs used to look like

tour taith signs

Mike Roe, the executive creative director for Milwaukee marketing agency Hoffman York , got interested in ghost signs when he noticed one outside his office window in the Third Ward, and then started noticing them everywhere in the neighborhood.

Ghost signs are faded advertisements that were painted on the outside of buildings decades ago, the remnants of which can still be seen.

"These signs were like the original out-of-home advertisements before TV, before social media, when you'd paint a big message on the side of your building to say, 'These are things we sell,'" Roe said. "And now it's like this art form of a part of history."

As his interest in the ghost signs grew, Roe started talking to people at the Historic Third Ward Association and learned about some of the factors that make the old, faded signs so prevalent in the Third Ward — including the fact that the area is a federally protected historic district and that it has a concentration of brick buildings built after a fire in 1892 destroyed hundreds of wooden buildings .

Roe wondered if there was a noninvasive way to preserve the signs before they completely fade away so people can see what they looked like in their glory days. With the help of augmented reality technology, he and some coworkers created a ghost sign tour of 13 signs on 10 buildings in the Third Ward. Now people can scan a QR code on a paper map or a mobile link, hold up their phone to a building, and see what the ghost sign used to look like.

Here's what Roe had to say about the tour and his fascination with ghost signs.

How did you learn what the ghost signs used to look like?

Most of the signs are now illegible so I had to find old photographs, some of them century-old. And when you look for those photos, they're usually of other things. So you're sifting through all these old photographs to try to catch these buildings in the background.

I found all these photos at the Milwaukee Public Library and the Milwaukee County Historical Society and the Wisconsin Historical Society . I've never had an excuse to really explore those places before, but whenever I would tell the staff there what I was looking to do, everyone was so friendly and excited and happy to help.

Once we found enough photos for reference, our designers and art directors re-created the signs. The augmented reality work was challenging because that type of technology works really well for closer stuff, like when you go to a furniture store website and they show you what your furniture would look like in your living room. But we were trying to use the technology on a much bigger scale, to show what something would look like on the side of a whole building. The developers used geolocation and got it worked out so when you use your phone to look at the side of the building, the sign will sit there and when you move, it stays anchored and doesn't float around.

What can people expect when they go on the tour?

People can go to the Historic Third Ward Association, 525 E. Chicago St., to get a copy of the map. We're also hoping to partner with other places in the Third Ward, like the Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Water St., so people spending time in the Third Ward can pick up a map to either take a walking tour of the signs or use the mobile link ( augmentedhistory.org ) when they come across the buildings.

Then, as you come up to one of the buildings on the map, you use your phone to scan the QR code for that building, and hold up your phone to the ghost sign, and it will overlay the image of what the sign used to look like.

Will there be more ghost sign tours in the future?

What's great about having this tour in the Third Ward is, in addition to so many ghost signs, people can get something to eat, go to the shops and the galleries, spend some time walking around and have a fun adventure.

We've had kind of tunnel vision on creating this experience and making it live, and now, after doing a soft launch, we're realizing how many people are really enthusiastic about this. A lot of people have told me about their passion for this art form, so we'd love to feed that passion as much as we can. And I've noticed there are a lot of ghost signs in the Fifth Ward as well. A part of me would love to expand the tour, and I do love the idea of finding other ghost signs in Milwaukee.

How do you explain your fascination with ghost signs?

I would never have called myself a history buff, but there's something about these signs. I look at them and then when I see what they used to look like, I think about that company and what they used to sell and what it used to be like.

Like one of the buildings had these two Rex Chocolates signs, which was this big chocolate manufacturer. When I was researching them, I found magazine and newspaper articles about them, then on eBay, I found some of their old candy tins. I love to see that there was this whole experience, this whole brand that few people know about now that used to be this giant of Milwaukee industry.

I've got to watch out. It's definitely a rabbit hole.
