Comprehensive travel insurance policies package together a number of valuable benefits. You can also buy policies that cover only trip cancellation or only medical expenses. With the wide variety of travel insurance plans available, you can find coverage levels that will fit your budget and trip needs.

Problems not covered by travel insurance tend to be similar among policies. We recommend that you read a policy’s exclusions so you’re not caught by surprise later if you try to make a claim. Typical exclusions include:

  • Injuries from high-risk activities such as scuba diving.
  • Problems that happen because you were drunk or using drugs.
  • Medical tourism such as going abroad for a face lift or other elective procedure.
  • Lost or stolen cash.

The average cost of travel insurance is 6% of your trip cost , based on our analysis. The cost of travel insurance is usually mainly based on the age of travelers and the trip cost being insured.

Unlike many other types of insurance, there are usually only a few factors that go into travel insurance pricing.

You can buy travel insurance from a travel agent, website or a travel supplier like an airline or cruise company. We’ve bought travel insurance online and it’s relatively easy. In our experience you can purchase a policy online within a few minutes.

  • Begin shopping for a policy right after you make your first trip deposit. It’s wise to buy travel insurance right after you make your first trip deposit. That way you get the maximum length of time for cancellation coverage. Plus, you’ll qualify for time-sensitive benefits, such as CFAR and pre-existing medical condition exclusion waivers .
  • Start by estimating your non-refundable trip cost. If you’re unsure of your trip cost, estimate the amount and then update it later with the travel insurance company, as long as it’s before your departure date.
  • Get quotes online or through a travel insurance agent. To get a quote, you typically need the travelers’ ages (or dates of birth), destination, travel dates, and the trip cost being insured.
  • Assess policy options and prices. You’ll usually be presented with a selection of policies at different price points, with the more expensive ones usually providing higher coverage levels. Look at the coverage limits for each line item so you know what you’re buying. Once you select a policy, you can buy it online.
  • Review the policy. You usually have two weeks or so to further review the policy. If you change your mind, you can get a refund, as long as it’s during the specified review period.

Here are some reasons you may need travel insurance.

You’re Traveling Overseas and Your Health Plan Doesn’t Have Global Coverage

Many health plans lack robust global coverage, or impose high out-of-network deductibles for care outside the U.S. We suggest that you check your health plan details to see what it provides outside the U.S. Travel medical insurance fills the gap.

You’re Going to a Remote Area or Out to Sea

If you won’t be near any quality medical facilities, even a small injury could turn into a major medical event. Medical evacuation coverage will pay to medevac you to an adequate facility.

You’re Traveling to a Hurricane-Prone Destination

If you’re concerned about hurricanes or other severe weather affecting your travel plans, you’ll want to make sure to buy a travel insurance policy that has trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance for hurricanes and other weather events.

If your trip is interrupted or canceled due to severe weather, you can file a claim and be reimbursed 100% for prepaid, non-refundable deposits.

To be eligible to file a travel insurance claim because of a storm, you must have bought your policy before the storm was named. Also, generally one of the following requirements must be met:

  • Your destination is under a hurricane warning.
  • Your destination is uninhabitable due to severe weather.
  • Your (common carrier) airline is delayed for a specified amount of time listed in your policy—for example, six hours.

You Want Emergency Backup

The 24/7 travel assistance lines that are included with travel insurance can assist you with finding a pharmacy, language translation, replacing a lost passport and much more.

You Will Lose a Lot of Money in Non-Refundable Deposits if You Cancel the Trip

You want trip cancellation coverage you’re worried about the money you will lose if you have to cancel the trip.

Trip cancellation will cover 100% of the prepaid money you’ll lose, as long as you cancel for a reason listed in the policy. Problems typically covered for trip cancellation insurance claims include sickness, injury, severe weather, natural disasters, jury duty and more.

Assess Your Needs, Read Reviews

Choosing the right travel insurance policy is like packing an essential item for your trip—you never know when you might need it. I recommend considering not only your travel plans, but also who you are traveling with and their circumstances as well as personal health requirements. That way you can find a policy that offers peace of mind, covering everything from lost luggage to unexpected medical emergencies. It’s also crucial to look into each insurer’s customer service reputation and the ease of their claims process, because if something does happen, you’ll want support that’s both reliable and accessible.

Purchase a Policy When You Book Your Trip

I strongly recommend buying travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. That way you get the maximum length of coverage for trip cancellation benefits. I don’t think many people realize that buying a policy shortly after you make your first deposit also makes you eligible to buy upgrades, such as “cancel for any reason” coverage, and to get other time-sensitive benefits, such as a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver.

Buy Travel Medical Insurance for International Trips

If you’re traveling outside of the U.S., I would make sure you buy a policy with ample travel medical and emergency medical evacuation insurance. It’s important because you may have little to no coverage under your U.S. health plan. Look for a policy where the medical insurance is primary, meaning the policy will pay out first, before any other health insurance you have.

Review Travel Delay and Missed Connection Benefits

If you’re flying to your destination, your itinerary could be derailed by weather, airplane mechanical issues or missed connections. If you’re  worried about paying extra money due to a delay or missed connections, I recommend that you look for a policy that has a generous amount of travel delay and missed connection insurance.

Determine If You Need Adventure Activities Coverage

If you plan to participate in extreme sports or adventure excursions, I suggest buying a plan that specifically covers these activities, as they’re often excluded. A travel insurance agent can help you pinpoint a policy that will cover your particular adventures.

Decide How Much Flexibility You Want

I like the idea of “cancel for any reason” travel insurance because you never know what life will bring, and unfortunately it might bring a reason to cancel a trip that’s not covered by the base policy. Having CFAR coverage ensures you can get partial reimbursement for any oddball problems that crop up.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of policy that reimburses you for money you lose from non-refundable deposits and payments when something goes wrong on your trip. These problems can range from lost baggage to flight delays to medical problems.

The more you’re spending on your trip, the more you likely need travel insurance. This is especially true for international trips and cruises, where travel problems become more expensive to solve.

What do I need for travel insurance?

The information you need to buy travel insurance includes the trip cost being insured, your age, your destination, length of trip and age. Buying travel insurance online is relatively easy. You don’t have to answer a lot of questions, and you can update your trip cost and itinerary later if plans change, as long as you do so before your departure.

Is there travel insurance for multiple trips?

While standard travel insurance plans are meant to cover one-time trips, frequent travelers should consider an annual travel insurance plan. These plans cover the same issues as a single-trip plan, such as trip cancellation and emergency medical situations. But they also offer the convenience of a one-time purchase for multiple trips.

What type of travel insurance do I need for my parents visiting me in the U.S.?

Travel insurance for parents visiting the U.S. is generally a travel medical insurance policy that helps pay medical costs if they get sick or injured during their visit. There are two main types of visitors medical insurance:

  • Limited policies that have fixed benefits: These generally set a cap for what they’ll pay for each medical treatment that’s covered. You may need to pay a deductible for each medical illness or injury and then the policy will pay 100% after that, up to the cap. For example, coverage for an X-ray might be capped at $250.
  • Comprehensive visitors insurance policies: These typically cost more but have more robust coverage and don’t put a cap on specific medical problems.

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

If you don’t know which provider to go with, it makes sense to browse a list of plans on a travel insurance comparison site. These online marketplaces will often include plans from the best travel insurance companies along with customer reviews.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Unpredictability is one of the mind-opening joys of travel, but travel insurance should contain no surprises. The time you spend to understand your options will be well worth the peace of mind as you embark on your next adventure.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.

Quidco is one of the largest cashback sites in the UK, offering discounts at more than 5,000 retailers. This includes the likes of Amazon, eBay, Booking.com and Domino’s. In addition, you can also get cashback on a range of services, such as car insurance through Aviva.

Crucially, you can use Quidco free of charge. It does offer a premium service, which is explained below , but its fee comes off the cashback you earn each month.

To use the cashback site, you’ll need to sign up to the provider by providing a name and an email address. Then, when you shop online make sure you use their app or website to search for your retailer or products. Once you’ve made your purchase it’ll be tracked on your account and stored as cashback once the purchase has been verified.

You can then withdraw cashback directly or exchange it for a voucher at selected retailers. If you opt for the latter, then you could increase your payout with an added bonus.

With the average user making £300 a year in cashback, Quidco can give your finances a handy boost. It offers cashback off a range of big name brands and stores such as Amazon, eBay, and Argos.

Also, by signing up as a Times Money Mentor reader you can earn an extra £15 in cashback when you spend £5 or more with the provider.

What is Quidco premium and is it worth it?

Quidco packages its services into two tiers: basic or premium. Its basic package is free to use and allows you to earn cashback from all its retailers.

The premium package, meanwhile, offers better cashback rates in return for a £1 fee. This is taken off the money you earn each month, so you’ll never have to use your bank details to pay for the subscription.

You can also downgrade to a basic package at anytime and if you don’t use Quidco throughout the month then it won’t need to pay the monthly fee.

Making this upgrade worthwhile will depend on your purchases made through Quidco. As you can see below, buying £100 worth of eligible items on Amazon each month will make no difference to your cashback.

However, other offers that are exclusively available to premium members can make all the difference. For example, consider making the same £100 spend on garden tools from Argos:

According to Quidco, the average premium member earns 40% more than those on basic subscriptions.

With the premium subscription you’ll need to make this £1 fee back first before a cashback balance is reflected on your account. This means if you use it sporadically then a basic membership could represent better value.

Alongside regular cashback offers, the cashback site also offers limited time deals. These include:

What is the highest cashback guarantee?

travel insurance compare quidco

Since Quidco claims to offer the highest cashback of any of its competitors in the UK, it runs a “highest cashback guarantee”. This is a scheme where if you find another provider offering a better offer it promises to beat its deal. If you’re a premium member, you’ll earn more than a basic subscriber.

So, it’s worth checking TopCashback and other sites before making your purchase.

Quidco is a legitimate business that has been used by more than 10 million people across the UK. Since launching in 2005, these users have earned more than £500 million in cashback.

As mentioned, Quidco is also part of the Moneysupermarket group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. This means as part of the broader group it’ll be vetted regularly to ensure it remains a legitimate entity.

Quidco makes money via something called an “affiliate network”. This isn’t too dissimilar to how the Times Money Mentor makes money, but in essence each time you click through to sites such as eBay via Quidco your journey will be tracked.

Once you complete your purchase, the website, which in this example is eBay, will owe Quidco a commission for your business. It then uses this money to pay your cashback, other expenses, and keeps the rest as profit.

Is cashback guaranteed?

No, as mentioned above, Quidco relies on receiving its commission to fund your cashback. If one of its providers doesn’t pay its commission then you may not receive your cashback.

How long do Quidco payments take?

This depends on where your purchase was made. Some companies take longer than others to process your transaction, which delays their commission payments to Quidco. Typically, it can take between three and six months to receive your cashback.

What is Quidco cashback reminder?

Quidco cashback reminder is a free browser extension that reminds you to activate your cashback on your online shop if a deal is available. It’s a handy tool to help identify cashback opportunities.

What is Quidco?

How does quidco work, how much does quidco cost to join, how long does it take to get paid, what brands and uk retailers are on offer on quidco, what are the best quidco cashback offers available right now.

quidco shopping

Quidco is a cashback website that gives you back money when you spend online with their partnered brands and retailers. It is one of the UK’s largest Cashback websites, has over 10 million members and is partnered with 5,000+ popular shopping brands.

These shopping partners range from clothing to travel, electronics to beauty and you can even get money back on your gas, electric and insurance. On average, Quidco members receive around £300 a year cashback on their online purchases. Since the Quidco website launched they have paid out over £500 million to members and their list of retailers and brands is continuously growing, so there’s no shortage of places to earn from.

Quidco works by tracking your online purchases and then giving you cashback as a percentage of what you spend with this online retailer. Put simply, if you buy through Quidco, some of the money you spend will be sent back.

It is a straightforward process and Quidco has made the journey to getting your money back as easy as possible. When you open an account with Quidco, you can view all of the brands and retailers they are partnered with. With thousands of retailers and brands available, you’ll likely be able to receive cashback on items you already want to buy.

For example, if you’re looking for a new phone deal, you can see who Quidco are partnered with, including the likes of Vodafone Mobile, Tesco Mobile, O2 Mobile, Three Mobile, etc. You can then view what the rate of cashback is for each.

O2’s deal with Quidco is 3% or up to £100 cashback. So you could earn £3 for every £100 spent on selected deals or get £100 back on other deals from O2. The same goes for other retailers. Currys offers up to 16.5% cashback, Argos up to 6.6% and Manchester Airport up to 20%.

When you click on any of these retailers through Quidco, cookies are placed on your device by Quidco and the retailer. These cookies enable the retailer to identify who to pay, which in turn allows Quidco to provide you with cashback.

Quidco has two membership options, Basic Membership and Premium Membership. When you first sign up to Quidco you will be enrolled on their Premium Membership. This will cost you £1 a month. This pound is only ever taken from the cashback you earn through Quidco.

They will never take money from your debit or credit card to cover this £1, it is only ever taken from cashback. If you take a break from using Quidco, there is no retention fee.

As a premium member you get ad-free access to Quidco, up to 10% top-up on cashback rates, double the difference in cashback guarantee, and up to 20% payout bonuses.

If you would prefer not to have £1 taken each month from your cashback each month you can downgrade to Quidco’s other membership option, Basic Membership. This is completely free and you’ll still get access to cashback from 5000+ retailers. However, you won’t get any of the other benefits that premium members enjoy.

Sign up for Quidco today and receive £15 when you spend your first £5

As soon as Quidco receives funds from the retailer you bought from, they will have the cashback added to your account. Patience is important for this part, as it usually takes between 3-6 months. You can see the average payout time for each brand on the Quidco website .

You can also check the status of your cashback on your member's activity page. If, for some reason, a payout takes longer than expected, Quidco will chase the payment for you so that you are both paid.

When the cashback is paid into your Quidco account, you have a few withdrawal options. You can either withdraw the money straight to your bank via a bank transfer, withdraw it to PayPal, or use the cashback to get an e-gift card.

Each method will typically take 48 hours for the money to land in your account or for you to receive the e-gift card. If you choose to withdraw your earned cashback via e-gift card, you also get a percentage increase on the amount called a payout bonus. If you're a Premium member, the extra percentage will be higher, so you'll receive even more cashback

There are several e-gift cards you can choose from. One of these is Love2Shop, which offers over 50 different digital e-gift card options plus 20 different physical gift cards, which can be spent in over 90 different stores.

A woman looking in a shop

With over 5,000+ brands and retailers you’ll be sure to find a cashback offer on your favourite places to shop. To help you find the best deals the brands and retailers on Quidco’s website are split up into different categories.

There are offers spanning several categories with the most popular being travel, electronics, clothing, department stores, home and DIY, telecoms, insurance, finance, business, banking, gas and electricity, health and beauty and even ethical and sustainable choices.

Included as part of these categories are some of the UK’s most popular retailers such as Amazon, eBay, Argos, Tesco, and Sky. Whether you want a TV, car, new clothes or jewellery, Quidco is sure to have retailers who can help.

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Travel Insurance FAQs

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from travelers like you.

Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for International Travel?

While rare, some countries or organized tours may require proof of travel insurance that lasts for the duration of your trip. Our Destination Center is a good starting point to learn about entry requirements and travel insurance recommendations.

While it is typically not mandatory, travelers should consider buying insurance if they want to protect themselves financially from unforeseen events that may impact their travel plans. Many Americans and U.S. residents purchase travel insurance when planning international or high cost trips. View our list of the top international travel insurance providers .

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Comprehensive travel insurance is designed to cover common disruptions that may impact a trip. Most policies will provide coverage for trip cancellations , medical emergencies , travel delays , missed connections , accidental death and dismemberment , and lost luggage . Travelers that experience financial loss as a result of a covered disruption may be eligible for reimbursement through their insurance policy.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

In general, a comprehensive policy with Trip Cancellation typically costs between 5% and 10% of the total trip cost. The cost of a policy depends on four primary factors: trip cost, traveler age, trip length, and coverage amounts. A policy without an insured trip cost will be significantly less expensive. We recommend comparing plans from multiple providers to find the best priced plan for your trip.

What Should I Look for When Comparing Travel Insurance?

There’s no one-size-fits-all policy when it comes to travel insurance. When comparing plans, you should consider the following:

  • Benefits: Travel insurance benefits outline what situations are covered under each plan. Make sure each plan you’re considering includes coverage for what’s important to you.
  • Coverage Limits: Plans will set limits to how much reimbursement you’re eligible for, and can vary significantly. Higher coverage limits can result in less out of pocket expenses in the event of a claim.
  • Exclusions: Travel insurance companies will list specific activities, equipment, and scenarios that are not covered by their plans in the event of a claim.
  • Premium: Higher priced insurance products do not always equate to better coverage. We recommend choosing the most affordable plan that offers the travel protection you need.
  • Provider Reputation: All providers on Squaremouth have been carefully vetted and offer 24-Hour Assistance services. Customers are also encouraged to share honest reviews about their experience before, during, and after their trips.

Does Travel Medical Insurance Cover International Trips?

In many cases, primary health care plans, such as Medicare or a policy you have through your employer, are not accepted overseas. If you’re not covered, you may be responsible for unforeseen medical expenses if you get sick or injured while traveling.

To avoid out-of-pocket expenses if you need medical care in the event of an emergency, many travelers opt for travel medical insurance. These plans can cover the cost of treating unexpected medical conditions incurred during your international trip.

Are Pre-Existing Conditions Covered by Travel Insurance?

Coverage for pre-existing conditions varies among travel insurance policies. While many plans won’t offer coverage for existing injuries or illnesses, some plans may offer Pre-Existing Condition waivers if certain conditions are met, such as purchasing the policy within a specified time frame from booking the trip.

Will My Policy Cover Trip Cancellations?

Yes, many comprehensive travel insurance policies cover trip cancellations under specified circumstances, such as sudden illness, injury, or death of the insured or a family member, natural disasters, or unexpected work obligations. Most policies that include the Trip Cancellation benefit offer 100% reimbursement for all prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.

What’s the Difference Between Single-Trip and Annual Travel Insurance?

Single-trip travel insurance covers a specific journey for a set duration, offering protection for that trip only. This is the most popular type of travel insurance among Squaremouth users. In contrast, Annual Travel Insurance provides coverage for multiple trips within a year. Annual plans can be cost-effective for frequent travelers and less of a hassle than purchasing multiple single-trip plans.

What's the Process for Filing a Travel Insurance Claim?

To file a trip insurance claim, follow these steps:

  • Contact your insurer: Notify them as soon as possible about the incident.
  • Gather documentation: Collect relevant documents, such as police reports, medical records, or receipts for expenses incurred.
  • Complete the claim form: Fill out the insurer's claim form with accurate details.
  • Submit supporting documents: Attach all required documents to substantiate your claim.
  • Keep records: Maintain copies of all submissions and correspondence for your records.

Where Can I Buy Travel Insurance?

Travelers can purchase travel insurance directly from providers, through a comparison site like Squaremouth, or directly through a travel supplier when booking. Credit cards and travel agents are other sources to consider. Travel insurance prices are regulated by law, meaning the price of one specific policy must be the same regardless of where it is sold, whether it’s purchased from Squaremouth or directly from the provider.

I have been using Quidco for quite a few years now so can thoroughly recommend. Getting extra cash back for something you were buying anyway is a no- brainer! You may have to wait a while for the cash but that is governed by the retailer. It all mounts up so well worth it.

Been with Quidco for years. Join if you are not in it now

Been with Quidco for years now and it is so worth being with them. Extra cash is so important these days and their help in backing you up is very reliable. Easy to use website. Well done Quidco.

Wildly incorrect prices and cashback rates paid

Whilst it's great to get a tiny bit of money back of purchases, I have noticed that an unacceptable number of items that I have bought are seriously undervalued - i.e. tracking at an incorrect price paid AND a different cashback percentage. The latest is a fridge freezer that I bought for £639 is marked as £474 with a cashback calculated at 0.7% instead of 4.5% as advertised. So, instead of the expected £28, I am getting £3.55.

Reply from Quidco

HI Mohsin Thank you for leaving a review, cashback is not paid on all of the purchase, as it is not paid on VAT, delivery etc, If you wish to send the order confirmation email to us on [email protected] we can check on this for you, in regards to the cashback rate dependant on who you purchased with some retailers do track low and correct once the purchase has been confirmed, this will be on their terms and conditions but again please message us and we can check on this as well for you.

100% would recommend

I've been using quidco for a number of years now and on the whole have been able to get my cash back tracked and paid .I'm happy with this service which has generated hundreds of pounds and when I have withrawn my money it's always paid into my bank account within a reasonable time .

Surprisingly Effective

I initially signed up to Quidco on a promotion, so didn't quite understand what it was about. I made sure to do online shopping and any large purchases and initially I was disappointed at how long it took before you got cash back. However, I continued and even though sometimes it is only a pound or two, or maybe less than a pound at times, it builds up nicely. It won't make me rich, but it's handy cash building up for when you need it, or to gift to someone in need. So I would recommend Quidco.

Love Quidco!

Been using Quidco for several years now and love the tool. This is my go-to when making any purchases and especially whilst renovating our house we have made easy cashback simply by searching for a provider. I like that you get a bonus when you convert the cashback into vouchers for certain websites. Have recommended to all!

I love using quidco

I love using quidco, it's easy to use and money for nothing! The only thing I would say, is that you don't always get the amount you expect or sometimes you get nothing, and you do have to wait quite a while for the money to hit your quidco account. But still it's free money and I have no complaints.

Quidco Compare Car Insurance does not allow raising claims!

I used Quidco last month to get car insurance. Quidco compare car insurance were offering £45 cashback for using them. I got the insurance on 11th April 2024. I took screen photos of the price and the £45 offer. Checked my Quidco today while the visit was recorded there no mention of the £45. Tried to raise a claim but the claim procedure states that "Quidco Car Insurance does not allow raising claims. How are you supposed to get the £45 from them then?

Date of experience : 11 April 2024

Hi thank you for the review car insurance can take 120 days to show on your activity, if this does not show within this time you need to contact us direct as claims are not raised in the standard way, please contact us on [email protected] if this does not show

Falsely Deactived my account so they could cheat me

I bought car insurance through Quidco back in February and have been waiting for the cash back rewards. Imagine my surprise when I try to sign and they’ve deactivated my account. Absolutely disgusting and cheating. It was 100% done on purpose considering the disputed period will end in June. Stop posting incentives if you don’t intend on honouring it.

Hi Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We would like to look into this further. Can you please send an email titled “TrustPilot” to [email protected] with further information, and we will respond to you directly.

Can't even claim for missing Quidco Compare cashback

Had a bad experience with Quidco recently, bought Home Insurance through Quidco's Compare Home Insurance instead of another comparison site and it didn't track. Went to raise a cashback claim and selected the date/time of transaction and Quidco now says "Quidco Compare Home Insurance does not allow raising claims. The fact they don't correctly track their own insurance comparisons AND won't let you raise a missing cashback claim is awful. EDIT: Based on Quidco's reply will update the rating for now and check after the advised 120 days.

Hi Adam Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. Home insurance can take 120 days to track to your account if this does not happen please contact us and we can look into as claims are not dealt with in the "standard" way

I have used Quidco for a number of years now. Easy to use and a good way of earning extra money. Even better now there are other options other than cash. Highly recommended.

Been with Quidco for many years

Been with Quidco for many years, never normally any problems, until the past couple of years where claims have been declined at an ever increasing rate. Always a plausible excuse which can't be confirmed or denied by myself. Tui being the worst offender. Cashing in any earnings is both very simple to do and quick to be paid. I find the webpage more difficult to navigate than before the revamp. Am I staying, yes, but I'll avoid Tui.

Hi Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. we’re sorry about your experience. If you do wish us to look into this please could you email us at [email protected].

Best travel insurance plans for 2024: a unique and comprehensive list for travelers from international citizens insurance.

Including the Best Plans for Seniors, Global Nomads, Visitors to the USA, Pets, Adventure Sports Addicts and More

BOSTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / May 2, 2024 / International Citizens Insurance, a leading international insurance broker, has announced the best travel insurance plans for 2024 summer travel. As the cost of airfare and hotels continues to rise along with the increase in flight delays and cruise cancellations, this list could not have come at a better time for travelers looking to protect their travel plans and their finances.

"This summer's travel season promises a high level of demand, increasing costs, and a strong potential for travel disruptions due to political unrest, weather, and other factors," said Joe Cronin, President of International Citizens Insurance. "Our clients want travel insurance they can trust to help them if they suffer a cancellation, a medical emergency, lost luggage, a natural disaster, or have to change plans due to unforeseen events. With this list, they will be able to find the best overall travel insurers as well as the right plans for their individual needs."

International Citizens Insurance judged each company and plan on six key criteria: the user-friendliness of their site, the ease of policy purchase, the number of countries plans are offered in, how extensive the benefits are, the ease of making a claim and the quality of the company's customer service. The most trusted insurers include WorldTrips , who made history as one of the first insurers to offer plans for purchase over the internet; GeoBlue Travel Insurance , which supports seniors with coverage for people up to 84 years old; and Trawick International, which offers coverage for over 500 adventure sports activities.

To help customers find the best insurance for their specific needs, International Citizens Insurance has also identified the best insurance for several use cases, including Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance, travel medical plans, and insurance with coverage for pets. International Citizens Insurance has also identified the best plans for clients with special needs, including seniors, missionaries and volunteers, U.S. citizens abroad, and digital nomads.

In today's unpredictable world, travel insurance has become the most essential accessory for any international traveler. Travelers want trip cancellation insurance to protect their trip and travel medical insurance plans to protect their health. But with so many companies out there, which ones can you trust?
