Taylor Swift’s “So High School” Will Make You Miss Your Teen Days

The song references one of the first times Travis Kelce mentioned her name.

Taylor Swift’s “So High School” Lyrics, Explained

Every night on the Eras Tour , Taylor Swift asks the audience , “You ready to go back to high school with me?” before performing her 2009 single “You Belong With Me” during the Fearless act . That might have been an Easter egg this whole time.

At 2 a.m. on April 19, Swift revealed that her new album, The Tortured Poets Department , was actually a “secret double album” entitled The Anthology , confirming a longtime Swiftie theory . The second part adds 15 more tracks to the Tortured Poets canon, including “So High School,” a ’90s alt-rock-tinged ode to a new romance that will take you back to your youth.

In the new song, Swift sings about being swept away by a new lover overnight, exclaiming that she feels like she’s back in high school. The catchy post-chorus contrasts Swift’s poet persona with her man’s sports and video game prowess. “Truth, dare, spin bottles / You know how to ball, I know Aristotle,” she chants. “Brand new, full throttle / Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto.”

The Travis Kelce Connection

It didn’t take long for Swifties to link the song back to Swift’s current boyfriend, Travis Kelce , given how many of her early songs invoked high school themes like football and cheerleaders. Now that she’s dating a football player, like she dreamed about in the “You Belong With Me” video, she’s living out that girl’s romance fantasies.

Taylor Swift’s “So High School” Lyrics, Explained

Not only are there a handful of sports references — like on “The Alchemy,” the penultimate track on the main album — but she also calls back to one of the first times Kelce mentioned her name. Some fans think the “kiss, marry, kill” lyric could be a wink to when Kelce played the game in a 2016 interview , and Swift was one of his options, along with Katy Perry and Ariana Grande.

“Damn, that’s messed up,” he said. “Ariana, sorry, love you, but you’re gone. And then Taylor Swift would be the kiss. And what’s the last one? Katy Perry? Yeah, Katy Perry would be the marry.”

But in Swift’s world, she’s the final pick no matter what. “Are you gonna marry, kiss, or kill me?” she asks. “It’s just a game, but really, I’m bettin' on all three for us two.”

What's The Real Meaning Of So High School By Taylor Swift? Let's Break It Down

When Taylor Swift dropped "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology" with a whopping 31 tracks, fans were eager to comb through the lyrics to find Easter eggs about her relationship with Travis Kelce. The meaning of the song "LOML" seemed promising as an acronym for "love of my life" but it wound up being short for "loss of my life." Somewhat surprisingly, it was the song "So High School" off "TTPD" that was packed with lyrics about Kelce . It opens with the pop star singing, "I feel so high school every time I look at you / I wanna find you in a crowd just to hide from you." This seems a veiled reference to how her relationship with the Kansas City Chiefs star has drawn a "crowd" of attention, but later lyrics more explicitly alluded to her boyfriend.

In the opening chorus, Swift makes a more obvious reference to Kelce. "And in a blink of a crinkling eye / I'm sinking, our fingers entwined," she sings. As fans have pointed out, Kelce has a trademark "crinkle" of his eyes. Following the chorus, the "Cruel Summer" artist playfully refers to when Kelce mentioned her in an interview before they met. "Are you gonna marry, kiss, or kill me / It's just a game, but really / I'm bettin' on all three for us two," Swift sings. Kelce played "Kiss, Marry, Kill" for AfterBuzz TV in 2016 and chose to "kiss" Swift out of a trio of pop stars.

Later in the track, Swift sings about her time together with Kelce.

Taylor Swift refers to a fan-favorite moment between the couple

Immediately after delivering her "marry, kiss, or kill me" line, Taylor Swift sings lyrics about Travis Kelce that are perhaps her most obvious from "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology." She references a famous encounter from early in their relationship. "Get my car door, isn't that sweet? / Then pull me to the backseat / No one's ever had me, not like you," Swift sings. On multiple occasions, the tight end was filmed opening the door for his girlfriend as the paparazzi took photos of the famous couple.

"So High School" has more than quick blips about Kelce, as Swift opened the second verse by mentioning their time together. "I feel like laughing in the middle of practice / To that impression you did of your dad again," Swift sings. Of course, "practice" is a reference to the Kansas City Chiefs star working out with the team. The second part of that line is a reference to her boyfriend's dad, Ed Kelce. In October 2024, Ed had kinds words for his son's famous girlfriend, as he described Swift as "a very, very sweet, very charming, down-to-earth young woman," when speaking to People .

Hearing Swift croon over Kelce on "So High School" is not surprising, as just weeks before "TTPD" dropped, a source told Entertainment Tonight that the couple were "in a great place." The insider added, "Taylor views Travis as a true partner and someone she can have a real future with."

Taylor Swift 'So High School' Lyrics – All The Travis Kelce References Explained

21 April 2024, 14:26

Taylor Swift releases first love song about Travis Kelce called 'So High School'

By Katie Louise Smith

Taylor sings about her relationship with Travis on 'So High School'. Here's what the lyrics mean and how they reference key moments in their relationship.

Listen to this article

With the release of ' The Tortured Poets Department ', it's fair to say that Taylor Swift has now officially entered her Songs About Travis Kelce era.

In and amongst the emotional, retrospective songs about Joe Alwyn and even Matty Healy, there's a handful of tracks within the full double album that appear to be about her boyfriend Travis. 'The Alchemy' is one, and 'So High School' is another.

'So High School', which features on ' The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology ' (track 22), sees Taylor sing about the exciting giddiness of a new relationship and how the whole thing makes her feel like she's 16 again. Based on the lyrics, this one is very clearly about her relationship with Travis Kelce.

Here's a full breakdown of Taylor's 'So High School' lyrics, including all the references she makes to their relationship, Travis' past interview comments and more.

When did Taylor Swift write 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

Explaining when she penned the album, Taylor revealed that she had been working on it since she “turned in Midnights”, ready for it to be pressed on to vinyl.

That process takes around 6 months, and with 'Midnights' being released in October 2022, it’s possible that Taylor started writing TTPD at some point in April/May 2022. She likely finished writing the album around October 2023.

"I started working on it immediately after [turning in 'Midnights'] and I've been working on it for about two years. I kept working on it throughout the US tour, and when it was perfect, in my opinion, when it was good enough for you, I finished it. And I am so so excited that soon you'll get to hear it, soon we’ll get to experience it together."

Taylor and Travis had been dating for a few months by October 2023. 'So High School' appears to be about the early stages of their relationship.

Taylor Swift Fans Spot Hidden Message About Travis Kelce in ‘So High School’ Lyrics and Video

Fans have speculated that Track 22 from “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology” is about her NFL boyfriend

travel so high lyrics

Taylor Swift is teasing her Travis Kelce 's relationship in her new music.

The “Fortnight” singer, 34, appeared to give a sweet little nod to the football player in her new lyric video for “So High School,” which is Track 22 on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology double album.

Eagle-eyed Swifties were quick to catch that at around the 40-second mark, when the lyrics “cheeks pink in the twinkling lights” appear, the “TK” in “twinkling” and “TS” in “lights” were shown in a light pink shade — a nod to her and her NFL boyfriend’s initials.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I’m never recovering from TS and TK being highlighted in light pink.” Another person commented on X , “wait im crying she highlighted TS & TK in the so high school lyric video this is so cute #TSTTPD .”

Another potential tease to their romance was that the song lyrics were set over a photo of what appear to be large stadium lights — similar to ones used during high school football games at night — hinting at Kelce’s career.

Following the release of Swift’s new album, several fans online have speculated that “So High School” is about the Kansas City Chiefs football player, due to the lyrics.

Fans appeared to tie one lyric “Are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me?” to Kelce’s interview with AfterBuzz TV where he was asked to put Swift, Ariana Grande and Katy Perry in each category. He playfully put the 14-time Grammy winner in the “kiss” category during the interview.

Even Kelce seemed to allude that the song was about him by dropping a video of himself doing an impression of his dad Ed Kelce on his New Heights podcast on X hours after Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department album came out Friday.

In “So High School,” Swift seems to reference that same impression, singing, “I feel like laughing in the middle of practice / Do that impression you did of your dad again.”

The singer-songwriter even shared some romantic scenes between the two of them during a promotional video for a social media challenge tied to her lead single "Fortnight" on YouTube Shorts.

In one shot, Kelce could be seen giving her a sweet kiss on the cheek in the kitchen as she made food, and in another, the couple could be seen holding hands while surrounded by lights during their world tour date.

She also showed a moment repping his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, as she held a red pickleball paddle with the team’s name.

Love it or loathe it, it’s all anyone can talk about right now, and Travis Kelce seemingly responded to Taylor Swift’s “So High School” lyrics from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department . The pair have been dating since at least September 2023 and many fans have speculated that at least one song is about their romance.

Taylor Swift Super Bowl Photos With Travis Kelce

The Tortured Poets Department  is Swift’s 11th studio album, which she announced during her speech for the Best Pop Vocal Album award at the 66th annual Grammy Awards. “This is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that. I want to say thank you to the members of the Recording Academy for voting this way, but I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” Swift said.

“So I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I have been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand-new album comes out April 19. It’s called  The Tortured Poets Department .”

“This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.”

‘So High School’ lyrics: What does the Taylor Swift song mean?

T aylor Swift said “ all is fair in love and poetry ” when releasing “The Tortured Poets Department,” and the album’s 22nd track, “So High School,” certainly leans into the love part.

While so much of “Tortured Poets” is about heartbreak, “So High School” examines that giggly, adolescent kind of romance, transporting back to feeling like you’re 16 again.

The song has several references to staples of youth, like “I’m watching ‘American Pie’ with you on a Saturday night” and “Truth, dare, spin bottles” and “Touch me while your bros play ‘Grand Theft Auto.’”

Revisit our live coverage of the release of “The Tortured Poets Department.”

She also references a common teenage game, "marry, kiss or kill," a PG-version of the more explicit, "f---, marry, kill."

While the game fits with the overall theme of the song, some Swifties immediately connected the dots between the lyric and her current beau, Travis Kelce.

After their relationship made headlines, a 2016 interview with Kelce, tied to his reality show "Catching Kelce," resurfaced.

In the video posted by AfterBuzz TV, Kelce was asked to play "kill, marry, kiss," with the first three options being Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift or Katy Perry.

After some initial hesitation, the interviewer told him, "It's just a game."

"Just a game?... Ariana is kill, unfortunately... Taylor Swift would be the kiss... Katy Perry would be the marry," he answered.

If the reference is indeed pointed at Kelce, it makes her new lyrics all the more adorable: "It’s just a game but really / I’m bettin’ on all three for us two."

Taylor Swift 'Florida!!!' song lyrics reference a storm just before 2024 hurricane season

Who's excited about Florida???  Taylor Swift .

After all, the superstar's song of the same name calls “Florida!!!”  “one hell of a drug.”

Swift told  iHeart Radio  on Friday, April 19, — the day that after getting inspiration from crime shows, she thought of where she'd go if she needed to reinvent herself.

"I think I was coming up with this idea of 'what happens when your life doesn't fit' or 'the choices you've made catch up with you' and you're surrounded by these harsh consequences and judgement," Swift said. "And circumstances did not lead you to where you thought you'd be."

But what else do Taylor Swift's fanbase think 'Florida!!!' about? Many Swifties have penned theories surrounding the song, saying it's a fictional tale about what she wanted to do during her Eras Tour shows at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium from April 13-15, 2023 — which would have been when details of Swift's and ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn's breakup were made public.

Decide for yourself ― Here are the lyrics to "Florida!!! "

"You can beat the heat if you beat the charges too; They said I was a cheat, I guess it must be true; And my friends all smell like weed or little babies; And this city reeks of driving myself crazy

"Little did you know your home's really only; A town you're just a guest in; So you work your life away; Just to pay for a timeshare down in Destin

"Florida, is one hell of a drug; Florida, can I use you up?

"A hurricane with my name, when it came; I got drunk and I dared it to wash me away; Barricaded in the bathroom with a bottle of wine; Well, me and my ghosts, we had a hell of a time; Yes, I'm haunted but I'm feeling just fine; All my girls got their lace and their crimes; And your cheating husband disappeared; Well, no one asks any questions here

"So I did my best to lay to rest; All of the bodies that have ever been on my body; And in my mind, they sink into the swamp; Is that a bad thing to say in a song?

"Little did you know; Your home's really only the town you'll get arrested in;So you pack your life away; Just to wait out the s---storm back in Texas

"I need to forget, so take me to Florida; I've got some regrets, I'll bury them in Florida; Tell me I'm despicable, say it's unforgivable

"At least the dolls are beautiful, ---- me up Florida; I need to forget, so take me to Florida; I've got some regrets, I'll bury them in Florida; Tell me I'm despicable, say it's unforgivable; What a crush, what a rush, ---- me up Florida

"It's one hell of a drug; It's one hell of a drug

"Love me like this and I don't want to exist; So take me to Florida

"Little did you know; Your home's really only a town you're just a guest in; So you work your life away; Just to pay for a timeshare down in Destin (take me to Florida)

"Little did you know; Your home's really only the town you'll get arrested in; So you pack your life away; Just to wait out the s---storm back in Texas

"Florida, is one hell of a drug (take me to); Florida, can I use you up?

"Florida, is one hell of a drug; Florida, go on, ---- me up"

‘So High School’ lyrics: Does Taylor Swift reference a 2016 Travis Kelce interview?

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Taylor Swift said “ all is fair in love and poetry ” when releasing “The Tortured Poets Department,” and the album’s 22nd track, “So High School,” certainly leans into the love part.
