TravelWell Center Mission

The Emory TravelWell Center’s mission is to:

  • Assist international travelers and institutions of all types in preparing for safe, enjoyable, and productive trips outside the U.S. with preventive vaccinations, medications, and advice for infectious, physical, and environmental hazards.
  • Serve as an internationally recognized center for diagnosing and treating tropical and travel-related infections.
  • Promote the science of travelers’ health, tropical medicine, and public health with training and research programs.

Travel Medicine Services for Individuals

We offer several travel medicine services for individuals. These include:

Pre-Travel Vaccinations and Consultations

Whether traveling abroad for business, service or pleasure, taking the proper precautions will help you have a safe, trouble-free, and successful journey. Our providers are recognized leaders in travel medicine. They can provide the appropriate travel vaccinations and prescriptions for your journey. They can also address any health-related questions or concerns about your trip.

Post-Travel Care and Tropical Diseases

Infections acquired overseas can be unusual and unfamiliar to physicians in the U.S. It’s critical—and often life-saving—to be evaluated by an expert in tropical diseases. Our infectious disease and tropical medicine-trained physicians have years of experience providing state-of-the-art care for those not feeling well after travel. Our affiliation with Emory University and collaborations with the CDC give us access to the country's most advanced diagnostic testing available.

Pre- and Post-Travel Physical Exams

Many international programs require physical exams and testing before travel. We provide these services and test for various infections among travelers returning from a long international trip or immigrants traveling from other countries.

Travel Medicine Services for Companies and Organizations

We work with many companies and other organizations that have international operations. If your institution has staff members who travel frequently, we can help keep your organization running smoothly.

Travel Medicine Clinics Overview

A barefoot woman stands at an overlook above Barcelona, Spain.

A visit to a Mayo Clinic travel medicine clinic before you depart on an international trip can help ensure a safer, smoother experience.

If you're planning a trip overseas, make one of your first stops a consultation with specialists in the travel medicine clinics at Mayo's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota. Availability of services may vary among locations. Please confirm when you request an appointment.

You meet with a travel medicine specialist who is knowledgeable about current health risks worldwide and who will promote safe and healthy travels by offering counseling, recommendations, vaccinations, prescriptions and, if needed, a referral to another expert for complex medical conditions.

Virtual visits

You might be eligible for virtual pretravel consultations. If you're interested in this option, talk with the patient appointment specialist when you contact us to schedule an appointment.

COVID-19 and international travel

International travel has become more complex due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and some countries have exit and entry requirements. Your travel medicine specialist will be able to help you prepare for these requirements so that you have a smoother travel experience.

Before your trip

Schedule an appointment for a pretravel consultation with a Mayo Clinic travel medicine clinic well before you depart so the travel medicine specialist can help you prepare. Ideally, this appointment would occur as soon as travel plans are established and at least two weeks — and preferably 4-8 weeks — before departure. When requesting an appointment for pretravel consultation, be prepared to inform the patient appointment specialist of the following:

  • All countries being visited
  • Dates and duration of travel
  • Any unusual circumstances

At or preferably before the appointment, you will want to provide copies of all available immunization records (including the International Certificate of Vaccination, commonly referred to as the yellow card). Doing so will expedite your clinic visit and may decrease the number of vaccines you are advised to receive.

Your in-depth pre-travel consultation may include:

  • A country-by-country assessment of all health risks specific for your travel itinerary, such as exotic infectious agents, altitude sickness and heat exhaustion
  • A review of your medical and immunization history profile with advice for health promotion and illness prevention
  • Advice for the high-risk traveler
  • Immunization recommendations, counseling and administration of vaccines to prevent illnesses
  • Vector precautions counseling
  • Malaria prevention counseling, with prescriptions if needed
  • Traveler's diarrhea counseling for prevention and self-treatment, with antibiotic prescription if needed
  • Identification of health resources in the countries you'll be visiting
  • Counseling on travel-related risks such as altitude sickness, with preventive prescriptions if needed
  • An opportunity to ask questions about the unique health and safety concerns for your travel itinerary

You will leave your travel medicine clinic appointment with much helpful and up-to-date information.

After your trip

  • Depending on where you're going and for how long, the travel clinic may recommend a routine follow-up evaluation after your return.
  • If you return sick, the travel clinic staff members are Mayo Clinic infectious diseases experts who provide comprehensive post-travel consultations for evaluation and treatment of travel-related illness, including parasitic and other diseases common to tropical regions but uncommon in the United States.

Get Vaccinated Before You Travel

It’s important to plan ahead to get the shots required for all countries you and your family plan to visit.

Family of three in an airport waiting

Protect your child and family when traveling in the United States or abroad by:

  • Getting the shots required for all countries you and your family plan to visit during your trip
  • Making sure you and your family are up-to-date on all routine U.S. vaccines
  • Staying informed about travel notices and alerts and how they can affect your family’s travel plans

Avoid getting sick or coming back home and spreading the disease to others.

Vaccinate at least a month before you travel

See your doctor when you start to plan your trip abroad. It’s important to do this well in advance.

  • Your body needs time to build up immunity.
  • You may need several weeks to get all the doses of the vaccine.
  • Your primary doctor may not stock travel vaccines. Visit a travel medical clinic .
  • You’ll need time to prepare for your pre-travel appointment .
  • If the country you visit requires a yellow fever vaccine , only a limited number of clinics have the vaccine and will probably be some distance from where you live. You must get it at least 10 days before travel.

Find out which vaccines are recommended or required for the countries you plan to visit .

TIP : Save time by getting routine vaccines during the same doctor visit. Use the Vaccine Self-Assessment Tool and discuss the results with your doctor. It tells you which U.S. recommended vaccines you (19 years and older) or your child (birth – 18 years) might need.

Last-minute travelers

When traveling to another country be aware your doctor may not carry a travel vaccine and you may have to visit a medical clinic.

Many travel vaccines require multiple shots or take time to become fully effective. But some multiple-dose vaccines (like hepatitis A) can still give you partial protection after just one dose. Some can also be given on an “accelerated schedule,” meaning doses are given in a shorter period of time.

International traveler’s medical service.

Before traveling abroad, you can greatly minimize your health risks by visiting the  International Traveler’s Medical Service at UConn Health. Since its founding in 1984, thousands of travelers have been medically prepared by receiving advice, inoculations and medications. Adequate pre-travel counseling and immunization are essential to avoid unnecessary risks from unfamiliar, "exotic," but usually preventable diseases.

  • Up-to-date recommendations concerning the prevention of malaria, diarrheal disease and other travel-related illnesses.
  • Individualized immunizations.
  • Printouts for each country of destination containing health and safety information.
  • Advice regarding the care of chronic medical problems.
  • Travel health insurance information.
  • Specialized health care and consultation for travelers returning with health problems.
  • Permanent medical records.
  • Official Yellow Fever Vaccination Center.

Tips for Travelers

  • Plan to obtain necessary travel immunizations beginning 4 to 6 weeks before your trip.
  • If there is a risk of malaria where you will visit, wear protective clothing, sleep behind netting or screening and use repellents to avoid mosquitoes transmitting malaria. Be sure to obtain and take preventive medication.
  • Inquire whether any countries on your itinerary are reporting yellow fever, or require vaccination against this disease for entry, by contacting the International Traveler’s Medical Service or your local health department.
  • Take along a first-aid kit including an extra supply of medications you take regularly.
  • Carry an extra pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses in case yours are lost or broken.
  • Be aware of the effects that jet lag, altitude, climate, food or water may have on any chronic illness.
  • To help prevent diarrhea during travel to developing countries, avoid salads, fruits you cannot peel yourself and poorly cooked meats and seafood. Also, avoid untreated water or ice.
  • If you become ill after returning home, remember to inform your physician of your travel history.

Common Health Complaints of Travelers

When planning a trip to another country, it's natural to focus on all the fun things you'll be doing. But it’s also important to consider what you need to do before your trip to stay healthy and safe.

Aurora Health Care offers travel vaccinations, medications and other services to protect you and your family. With several convenient locations throughout Wisconsin, we make it easy for you to get the travel medicine services you need. Our international travel clinic specialists help you stay healthy so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.

What are travel vaccinations?

Travel vaccinations help protect you against certain diseases while traveling abroad. You may need specific vaccines to enter certain countries. Other vaccines help protect you from diseases that are more common in other countries than in the U.S.

Getting the right vaccinations helps you avoid getting ill while traveling. It also helps prevent bringing the disease back home or spreading it to others.

Who needs travel vaccines?

Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, it’s a good idea to check with a travel medicine specialist about vaccinations. These people may also need travel vaccines:

  • Business or government travelers
  • Employees of nongovernmental organizations (NGO)
  • Humanitarian aid workers
  • Parents planning on international adoption
  • Students on spring break or studying abroad

Required vaccinations for travel

Before you travel, work with your primary care provider to make sure you’ve received your routine vaccinations, such as:

  • Chickenpox (varicella) vaccine
  • COVID vaccine
  • Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine
  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • Pneumococcal vaccine
  • Polio vaccine
  • Shingles vaccine
  • Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine

Depending on your history and the country you’re visiting, you may also need travel vaccines such as:

  • Dengue fever vaccine
  • Hepatitis A and B vaccines
  • Japanese encephalitis vaccine
  • Meningitis vaccine
  • Rabies vaccine
  • Typhoid vaccine
  • Yellow fever vaccine

When should I get travel vaccines?

You should schedule your appointment with the travel clinic at least four to six weeks before you leave. It can take up to a few weeks for your body to build immunity after getting a vaccine. You may also need more than one dose of a vaccine. Visiting the clinic well in advance ensures you have enough time to get the necessary care.

How long before travel should I get the hepatitis A vaccination?

The hepatitis A vaccine is a two-dose series given six months apart. If you’ve never received the vaccine and are traveling to an area where hepatitis A is common, you should get vaccinated.

However, if you don’t have enough time before your trip for both vaccine doses, you can get just the first dose. The first dose will still have some protective benefits.

Where to get vaccinations for international travel

Your primary care provider is a great person to start with to find out what vaccines you may need before you travel. They can provide routine vaccines but don’t typically carry some of the specialized vaccines required for international travel. You should visit a travel clinic for more targeted vaccinations.

A travel clinic is a special outpatient clinic run by travel medicine specialists. These experts discuss your itinerary with you and provide recommendations to help you stay healthy and safe. A travel medicine specialist can tell you what vaccines you need and often provides those vaccines onsite.

What to expect during your visit to the travel clinic

Before your travel clinic appointment, please print and complete the traveler history form (PDF) . The form helps us make the best recommendations to keep you safe and healthy. Some of the questions require you to gather information from several sources, so please allow plenty of time to fill out the form before your visit.

You’ll need to bring the completed form to your appointment along with your:

  • Health insurance card
  • Photo identification to verify your insurance, such as a driver’s license, passport or government ID
  • Travel itinerary
  • Vaccination records

You’ll meet with one of our travel medicine specialists to review your itinerary and medical needs. This provider:

  • Answers your questions
  • Evaluates your current health
  • Gives vaccinations as needed
  • Prescribes medications as needed
  • Reviews your medical history

Plan for your appointment to last around 90 minutes. We recommend you receive all your travel vaccinations at one location for a more accurate health record.

Travel clinic services

Our travel clinics provide vaccines, exams and medical treatments before you visit another country. We also offer:

  • Contact information for local doctors and emergency facilities in the countries you plan to visit
  • Corporate accounts if you have employees who need our services
  • International Certificate of Vaccinations or Prophylaxis (ICVP)
  • Medical examinations for immigration
  • Medications for travel conditions such as altitude sickness, traveler’s diarrhea and malaria
  • Personalized advice, information about potential risks at your destination, and appropriate precautions based on your age, health history and itinerary
  • Recommendations for travel first aid kits

Travel Vaccinations

Are you planning international travel.

To prepare for your trip, you will have a personal telephone consult with a nurse, specifically trained in travel medicine, to assess your travel health needs. Your nurse will gather information, ask you questions, and make recommendations for your travel needs. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the decision-making. After the telephone consult, you may receive recommended immunizations and/ or have oral medications. You can typically come in the next day to receive your immunizations and pick up oral medication from our pharmacies. We serve adults over the age of 18.

How far in advance do I make an appointment?

You should make your appointment at least 4-6 weeks prior to your travel date. Some countries require a series of immunizations that can take longer than 4-6 weeks (please see the link to the CDC Website).

What information should I have ready before my appointment?

Please have the following information ready before your telephone appointment: The urban areas and/or rural areas you may visit, and a list of travel or other immunizations you have had to date.

How do I schedule an appointment?

If you need a phone appointment with a travel nurse, schedule it 4 to 6 weeks prior to your departure. If you’re leaving sooner or even at the last minute, you should still consider scheduling an appointment .

If you only need a COVID-19 test for travel and prefer not to schedule a travel nurse appointment, you can request a COVID-19 test by selecting a “Coronavirus/COVID-19 Concerns” E-visit at  https://kp.org/evisits .

Don’t book travel nurse appointments for domestic trips. We only provide care for international travelers.

If you’re new to Kaiser Permanente, you’ll need to see your doctor prior to making a travel appointment.

If an exotic (Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, or Polio) vaccination is needed you will be seen in the Allergy department. For all other vaccinations you will see your Primary Care Physician.

Can two or more of us be seen during one appointment?

Each person should schedule their own appointment. Usually we can schedule these back to back.

What will the nurse ask during my appointment?

  • Review your travel plans and ask about activities, and other things that impact travel health
  • Ask if you are doing rural travel, urban travel, or both
  • Talk about health risks specific to your trip, based on the CDC and other databases
  • Review your health history as it relates to travel, your medications, allergies, medical conditions, and immunization history
  • Recommend vaccines & medications for your specific trip
  • Discuss the risks & benefits of each recommendation
  • Assess your malaria risk and discuss prevention medications
  • Discuss side effects of recommended treatment
  • Advise you how to stay healthy and avoid or manage common travel health problems
  • Answer your questions
  • Transmit oral medication prescriptions to the pharmacy of your choice
  • Route recommended immunizations to a physician who is trained in travel for authorization

Where can I get more detailed information on travel immunization needs?

Please go to the United States Center for Disease Control travel website:   http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/
