Are dogs allowed on trains?

How to travel with a dog in train in india.

  • In AC First-class and first-class compartments Dogs are allowed to travel in AC-First class and First-class compartments. Depending on your ticket allocation, you can take your dog with you in either the two-seater coupe or the four-seater cabin of these compartments. This is the expert recommended way of travelling.
  • Dog boxes in train (Second-class luggage or SLR Brake van) Dogs can also travel as ‘luggage’ on trains, whereby they are put into a dog box in the second class compartments or a Brake van. Please note that not every train has a dog box, so parents must check for the same beforehand. Additionally, it is mandatory to have a mouth guard or muzzle on your dog when travelling in the dog box, for the full duration of travel. Considering all of this, experts do not recommend the dog box for travelling with pets on train.
  • Puppies can be carried in baskets of all compartments As per latest notification by the Eastern Railways and Southern Railways , puppies can be carried in closed baskets, in all train compartments. However, it does not mention the age till which a dog is considered a puppy, nor if the puppies can be taken out of the basket during travel. Since the rules are not clear, we would recommend booking the AC-First Class compartments for travelling with your puppy (as mentioned in point 1).
  • Get a confirmed train ticket for yourself in the first AC compartment.
  • Have all the necessary application for your dog’s train travel ready beforehand.
  • Book your dog on the train, at least 3 hours prior to boarding the train.

How To Travel With Your Dogs By Train In India: A Detailed Guide

Updated: Feb 29

I recently traveled with my two dogs by train from Bangalore to New Delhi and I'm writing this detailed guide on the process involved in traveling by train with dogs in India.

Thanks to social media and the growing popularity of the pets-being-family sentiment, we pet-parents now can be relieved that we can travel across the country with our dogs. And the best and the most economical way to travel with your pets is the good ol' train! And trust me, traveling first class in the train is a whole experience of its own. It's like having your own private 'chalet' on the train where you, your co-traveler and your dogs have all the privacy in the world! However, as romantic as the idea of traveling with your dog/s sounds, it's not without its share of formalities, procedures and confusion. Since I was going to embark on first such journey of my life, I did my research, followed pieces of advice scattered online and in dog communities and learned the rest as I went. So here's everything I know about traveling with your pets -- in my case two dogs -- on the Indian railways so that you can also do a train journey with your dogs successfully and with minimum hassle. And the best part is that you only have to learn this process once. The second time you do this, it'll still involve as many steps, but then, you'll know exactly what to do.

Why do you want to travel with your dogs?

First things first, first evaluate why you want to travel with your dogs. Here's a few questions to ask yourself before you decide to travel with your dogs in the train.

Are they fit and happy enough to travel?

Is it the best option for you to take them along or will they be better off in the care of someone while you finished your business and came back.

Is the duration of the stay long enough to justify all the hassles and costs involved in getting the dogs to travel along?

Can you afford this trip? (Scroll to the bottom to see the associated costs of train travel with your dog/s)

For me, I was going to travel for months, first to stay put in one place and then to travel to the Himachal while my dogs stayed with relatives nearby, and it was unthinkable for me to leave them in boarding facility or with a friend for that long. Besides, I just simply like having my dogs around everywhere and having them with me affords me the possibility of extending my trips without worrying about them.

A) Booking the train tickets

Once you're absolutely convinced that you want to take your dogs along, the first step in the process is to book the train tickets.

1. Book the tickets well in advance

Given that the Indian Railways have millions of passengers traveling everyday, the trains are crowded and getting a confirmed ticket is rarely a sure thing, especially when it comes to the higher classes. Since the only option to travel with your pets in the train is by booking the First Class or 1A Class Tickets, know that there's only one or two 1A coaches in the entire train and hence limited availability of tickets. Here's the steps to book the train tickets.

2. Make sure the train you want has a First Class Coach

Not every train has a first-class coach. If the route you want to travel on doesn't have a train with a First Class Coach, unfortunately you cannot travel along with your dogs in the train.

(But you can put them in the luggage compartment in a process that's similar to putting them in an airline hold. More information on that here , but my post is specifically for traveling *along* with your pets as your co--passengers in your coupe or cabin.)

first class 1A train

3. Book early to get a confirmed ticket

So book as soon as you can. Anywhere between a month or 20 days before the journey, you should be able to get a confirmed ticket, but even if you get a "Waitlisted" ticket say upto 5, chances of clearing are high. Apps like ConfirmTkt give you the probability of having your WL confirmed in % terms. When I booked my tickets, the WL number was 4 & 5 and showed a 77% chance of confirming, but within 1 week of the journey, the tickets got confirmed.

4. Need to book minimum 2 train tickets

While you can travel with your dogs in the first class compartment, you either need a coupe (a two-person cabin) or a cabin (seats 4) only when everyone else in the cabin is traveling with you. You need to book at least two tickets to get a coupe.

When booking the ticket on IRCTC, choose the "Coupe" option under preferences.

Book a coupe in First Class train to travel with dogs

If you're 3 or 4 members, you will by default get allotted a cabin which seats 4. If you book only one ticket, it's not guaranteed you'll get a coupe and mostly you'll get a cabin where you'll not be allowed to board the pet if the other passengers in the cabin are not with you.

Once your tickets are booked, you can sit back. If they're confirmed, great. If not, keep an out on the waitlist by checking your PNR regu larly. You can cancel a waitlisted ticket upto 48-hours before the train departure without incurring any charges except the processing fees. (You can even cancel a confirmed ticket within 48 hours, if needed.) As the dates come closer, the WL should move up.

Note: You cannot book Tatkal tickets on first-class

How to book 2 tickets if you intend to travel solo?

If you're a solo traveler but still want to take your dog along, you can still do that. If you want to split the costs, one option is to find another person using a group or networks who is willing to travel on the same route to travel in the train along with you. How about finding another dog parent using a Facebook group like this?

But even if you don't end up finding someone else or want to travel solo, here's what to do. Book tickets for two using your name and a "made up" name - say your brother or a friend. You can still follow all the next steps and get into the train as usual. But when the TT comes to check your tickets and sees that the coupe is booked for two, but you're the only one, you can make up an excuse about the other person's sudden <insert exigency> on why they couldn't travel on the nth hour. As long as you've paid for 2 tickets, you have all the rights to be on the coupe. In rare cases of an overcrowded train, the TT may allot the 2nd seat in your coupe to someone else, it's not fair or completely above-board, but hey if they're okay with sharing the space with you and your dog, what's the problem right?

Note, you can only travel with your dogs in a train with a confirmed ticket.

B) Preparing paperwork to travel with dogs in the train

The Indian railways are kind enough to allow animals onboard but this allowance is based on the assumption that the pet is vaccinated, is in a healthy enough state to travel, isn't aggressive, and doesn't suffer from an infectious disease. A vet's certificate validating all of this is needed.

Get a "fit to travel" or health certificate by your vet 24-48 hours before the journey

Take your dog/s to the vet 2-3 days before the scheduled date of travel. Note: this is important as the health certificate is valid only 24-48 hours before the departure of your train. So for example, if you're traveling on a Friday, the health certificate should've been issued latest by Wednesday.

The vet will conduct a general checkup of the pet and if the dog is healthy, has their vaccinations up-to-date, they'll issue this health certificate for a fees. Cessna in Bangalore charges Rs.1000/dog for the health certificate but many other small clinics will do it for 400-500. Note if the vaccination is not up-to-date, you can get the dog vaccinated on the same visit and request the doctor to adjust the dates and still issue the certificate as it's just a formality. (Our puppy was behind on her booster shoots but she got one on the day of the issue of the health certificate and in the certificate the vet adjusted the date by a week prior :P)

Domestic Travel Dog Health Certificate

C) Request the reservation officer to allot a coupe

This is an additional step in the formalities to complete to travel with your dogs in the train which basically aims at securing a coupe in the train. I'm not entirely sure if this step is needed as if you're 2 people booking the tickets who have already specified your preference for a coupe in the booking step, you'll get it. But sometimes, depending on the traffic on the train, a coupe may not be guaranteed. For context, every 1A coach only has around 3-4 coupes, rest being cabins. (You can check the layout of your train on the ClearTkt app to get an idea of the breakup between coupes and cabins.) While it's unlikely that you will not get a coupe by default, still this additional step makes sure you maximize your chances of getting a coupe allotted since a coupe is the only way you can travel with your pets if you're two or one person.

The step basically involves:

1) Write a letter to the reservation officer of the relevant railway station. Mention your date of travel, PNR, details of your pets etc. Here's a format of letter requesting the coupe you can use for inspiration.

2) Print it out, sign it and take a copy of Aadhar cards of all the people traveling on the same PNR along with the vet issued health certificate and a copy of their vaccination records of your dogs.

3) Go to the reservation office of the originating station of the train 2 days before the journey. In case you cannot go to the reservation office two days or a day before the journey, go there on the same day of the journey 4-6 hours before the departure time and well before the train chart is prepared.

4) Locate the department of "Emergency Quota" and drop your documents in a designated box, tray or to a railway clerk in the department.

Note: For the above step, you can only go to the reservation office of the station from where the train originates and not a station that's on the way. So for example, if your journey is from Bangalore, but the train started from Kochi, the above process needs to be done at the reservation office of the Kochi railway station. If this is not possible, then skip this step and just keep your fingers crossed for a coupe! Or to eliminate the risk of not getting a coupe, book 4 tickets to get a confirmed cabin.

emergency quota to request for the coupe

Now that you've done this, there's not much else you can do but wait and get excited about the journey. Whether or not you get a coupe is something you'll only know on the day of the journey. From my interactions with every person who's done this trip, noone has been denied a coupe if they followed all due process.

D) What to pack for the train journey with your dogs

Noone told us this but packing right for the trip will make all the difference in making it comfortable and safe for both yourselves and your dogs.

Here's what to pack for a train journey with the dogs:

Poop scooper: Yes, it might be cumbersome to lug around a weird-looking poop scooper on this journey but it'll be needed as your dogs will want to relieve themselves on the platforms or worse IN the train! It'll be useful even at the destination of your journey so why not?

Dog bed: Your dog's bed will help giving the dog a familiar place to sleep in an unfamiliar surrounding. It also helps with absorbing the jerks of the train.

A stack of newspapers: You really need newspapers for laying out on the floor, soaking up any accidents, and lining the bed linen during meals etc.

Plenty of light food and fruits for the dogs : While the trains do sell food on-board, the choices are limited and not necessarily the healthiest. Ideally, you should feed your dogs very little food before and during a train journey to minimize chances of a stomach upset or nausea. Nevertheless, you should carry your dogs' treats, chew toys, and maybe even fruits like banana and packaged yoghurt for the trip as most of these things will not be available in the train or any station.

Dog tags : If your dogs don't already have them, please make sure they have collars with tags displaying their name and a phone number in case they're lost or have an accident.

Bedsheet : If you plan to have your dogs sleep on the berth, ( they're wide enough to allow a human and a dog to sleep alongside), carry your own sheets as a courtesy.

E) Buying a train ticket for your dogs at the railway station on the day of the journey

Just buying your train tickets, arranging the documents of the dogs and requesting the railways to allot a coupe isn't enough! There's one last and crucial step to ensure your dogs get to travel on the train with you. You have to buy them a ticket too! Yes, all dogs traveling on a train - whether along with their owners or in the luggage bogey are treated as "luggage" and need to have their own "luggage ticket". At the time of writing this, these tickets need to be booked in-person (and in-canine) at the railway station, but there's news that IRCTC will soon allow online booking of pet tickets ! But until then, once your tickets are confirmed and you've been allotted a coupe (congrats!), you need to be at the railway station to buy the luggage ticket for your pets. Here's how:

Get to the station at least 4 hours before the train. (Trust me, this is important. We got there barely an hour before departure thanks to some serious miscalculation of the Bangalore traffic and nearly missed the train! (Imagine that, after all the hoops we jumped to travel with the dogs!) There could be queues at the luggage counter, you may not find it easily, it might take a while to navigate to your platform, etc. so be the proud Indian dad here and get to the station 4-5 hours before the train departure.)

Keep a copy of your Aadhar cards, dogs' vaccination records and/or the vet-issued health certificate on you. (Very important!)

Once at the station, locate the 'Luggage booking' room (ask the coolies/shopkeepers for directions) and take your dog/dogs there. If it's just 1 dog, one person can go with the dog while the other waits with the luggage. But if it's 2 or more pets, ideally both travelers can go to the luggage desk to expedite things.

Present your dogs along with all the documents. (Heh) They'll weigh your dog and charge accordingly. The official charges are around Rs. 80 per kilo, but sometimes, they don't weigh the dog and levy a standard flat rate of Rs. 1100 per dog which is what we paid without having our dogs weighed. (And oh since we didn't have an Aadhar card copy on us, they also made us go back outside the station and take a copy and come back!)

That's it. Once you have your "luggage ticket, you're aaaalllll set. Follow to the last step.

F) Getting into the train and settling with your dogs

You've got your tickets confirmed, have a coupe and luggage tickets. All you need to do is keep it all carefully, ensure you have everything for a comfortable journey, withdraw some cash from the ATM as you won't have network to pay online for all the food and tea on the train. If you're running late, best to enlist a coolie to help you navigate to your platform. Trust me, managing your luggage and a nervous dog can be a lot!

Here's a few good-to-follow practices once you've boarded the train with your dogs:

1) Spread some loose newspapers on the floor as protection against "accidents" - some dogs can get travel sick.

2) Make a note of all the stations well in advance using an app like ConfirmTkt . To help your dogs do their business, you'll need to get off at stations with a halt time of ideally 5 minutes or longer

3) Use poop scooper to pick up your dogs ' poo and newspaper to soak the pee - Please DO NOT leave it on the station.

4) Keep the dogs leashed outside of your coupe to not inconvenience the other travelers. It's a privilege to be allowed to be on public transport with your dogs. If you want people to be kind to dogs and carers of dogs, the onus of being a responsible pet parent lies on you.

The cost of traveling on the train with your dogs

While traveling with dogs by train may be the most economical option given the other alternatives namely a road trip or a pet-friendly airline, it still comes with its own additional costs that should be factored in when deciding the trip.

Here's a rough calculation:

Cost of train tickets: A first class ticket costs between Rs. 4000-6000 depending on the length of the journey and the train class. For context, a Bangalore To New Delhi first class ticket on the Karnataka Express which covers around 2100km costs about Rs. 5500 per ticket.

Cost of health certificate : A fit-to-travel health certificate costs around Rs. 500-1000 per dog depending on the vet. It cost me Rs. 500 per dog.

Cost of the dog 'luggage ticket'- The luggage ticket costs around Rs. 800-1500 per dog based on its weight and journey class. It cost me Rs. 1200 per ticket.

Cost of the travel to the railway officer: I mention this as a cost head because you'll need to pay cab fare/fuel charges etc if you're making a trip to the railway station just for this. Add another 500 here. Do not pay any bribe at any point!

Cab to the railway station: Don't forget to factor in incidental costs like making photo copies (Rs. 100), coolies (if you have luggage) and a cab that will let you travel to the railway station with your dog. More often than not, most cabs will not allow a dog onboard so your best bet could be taking an auto rikshaw instead. Additionally, there's some pet cabs launched in the city so research and book one well in advance to avoid last minute hassles. (Unlike us.)

Misc costs: These could be costs of making copies of documents, coolie charges, food and beverages on the train, tips etc. Consider another 500-1000/per person for these.

All in all, a travel for 2 people and 2 dogs in a First Class coach in a train from say Bangalore to New Delhi should cost around Rs. 20,000 in total. Give or take a thousand.

That's it, you've put in a lot of sweat, blood and money on making traveling with your dogs in a train a reality! Now sit back and enjoy the beautiful journey. Watch as your dog watches this new world that has suddenly opened as the train snakes past hamlets, crosses rivers, and scratches the surface of real India.

travel with dog in train india

Dogs can be great travel companions. But unfortunately, for a lot of people, they have to leave their four-legged friends behind when they plan holidays or go on work trips. Separation anxiety is real for pets, and it can be heartbreaking for their humans, too.

If you are not too keen to leave your dog behind in a pet hostel or with a family member, consider taking them along with you! Yes, it is possible, since train journeys can give you the comfort and privacy of home.

On Instagram, Barsha Dikshit, a blogger, shared a video in which she showed how she journeyed with her two dogs. The adorable puppers were patient as she figured out all the paperwork before the commencement of the trip. Check out the video here:

Dikshit wrote in the caption: “Indian Railways is one of the best [means of] transport to carry your pets for longer distances. It takes a lot of stops; [is] well ventilated and has a lot of space for the pets to laze around.”

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by 🧿🧚🏻‍♀️💫 𝓑𝓪𝓻𝓼𝓱𝓪 𝓓𝓲𝓴𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓽 (@wild_magical_soul)

She shared the steps that she had to go through:

1. Book tickets as per requirement. 2. Get a copy of your confirmed tickets and write an application to the chief reservation officer of the station from where you will board the train. 3. Complete all vaccinations for your pet and keep the certificate ready. Get a fitness certificate from a vet 24-48 hours before departure. 4. The cabin confirmation will come 4 hours before departure time. 5. Reach the station and go to the parcel office and show them your tickets, vaccination cards, and fitness certificate of the pet/s. 6. Remember to carry photocopies of all documents, your ticket, and one photo ID. Ask them to book your pet, who will first be weighed, and parcel charge will be levied. 7. Keep your pet comfortable by carrying food, water, their favourite toy, something for them to chew on.

Festive offer

According to indianrailways.gov.in , a pet dog can be carried in a dog box in second class luggage and brake van (SLR). A dog is also permitted to travel with the passenger in AC first class and first class compartments only, provided that the whole coupe is booked by the passenger or the group of passengers for exclusive use.

A dog carried in a dog box is charged at luggage rates applicable to the train at 30 kg per pet dog. Dogs can also be carried in AC first class and first class at luggage rate for 60 kg per dog. Keep in mind that they are not allowed in AC2 tier, AC3 tier, AC chair car, sleeper class and second class compartments.

It is to be noted that both first class and AC first class have separate cabins/coupes so that pets do not cause inconvenience to other passengers. “Booking of dogs in dog boxes is not permitted in Rajdhani/Shatabdi trains as they do not have dog boxes. In other trains, one dog box is provided and only one dog is booked per train on a first come, first served basis,” the information on the site reads.

There is no advance booking. Pets can be booked at the counter, one hour before train departure. Dogs locked in dog boxes will have the company of their owner who will feed them enroute. Special horse boxes can also be provided in case there are many dogs, upto 36 in case dogs are of a large size.

Pet On Indian Trains : All You Need To Know

Photo of M

Have you ever been on a vacation, staring into the vast expanse of a gorgeous blue sea or walking through a valley decorated with Nature’s best or trudging through snow as you climb the contours of a mountain and been struck with the sudden, crippling thought of what your little puppy has been doing all this while you’ve been holidaying in some far-off destination?

Pet parents, like all parents, have a lot to worry about while planning a vacation. Pet-sitters, pet-walkers, planned meals, medicine dosages, teething toys - all of this has to be taken care of before you take off for a holiday, leaving your dog or cat behind. Except, you don't really need to leave your furry baby behind, thanks to the Indian Railways! Most travellers are unaware of the facilities provided by the Indian Railways with regards to travelling with pets. While several airlines such as Air India and Jet Airways allow the carriage of pets in the cabin or as checked-in cargo subject to certain conditions and often for an extra charge, train travel is surely the more economically viable option.

The great Indian railway network connects the country across its length and breadth and caters to 23 million people on a given day. It is a cost effective and convenient way for parents and pets to get around. Although travelling with a pet on a train in India is cheap, it can get complicated if you are not aware of the rules and procedures attached to this. Pets are categorised as “luggage” in Indian Railways terminology and the regulations that apply for their travel as listed on the IRCTC website. Click here to read the rules applicable as per the IRCTC website.

In the case of dogs, there are two travel options available. A dog can be taken in a coupe (2 berths) or a cabin (4 berths) of a train in A.C. First Class or First Class (Non A.C.) Dogs are strictly not allowed to be carried in ACC Sleeper coaches, ACC chair car coaches and second class coaches. Alternatively, dogs can travel specially designed boxes in the luggage van. While the former option is preferred by most pet parents, the catch is that if fellow passengers object to the presence of a dog in the train compartment, your pet will have no choice but to travel in the luggage van.

Once you have booked your rail tickets, it is advisable to write to the Chief Commercial Officer to explain your case of a travelling pet in order to ensure that you are allotted a coupe or a cabin and not randomly ordered berths.

Pet parents must carry collars and chains for their dogs. While aboard the train, arrangements for the animal's food and water are your responsibility. This is why travelling with your pet in a rail compartment is a better bet than putting him or her in the luggage van, although this is subject to the agreeability of your co-passengers.

It is advisable to reach the train station well in advance before you commence your journey so as to visit the cargo dispatch department, where luggage charges based on the weight of your pet must be fulfilled. Post this, your pet will be assigned a tag bearing despatch details. This is a crucial part of journeying with pets are railway authorities are quick to fine travellers carrying unbooked dogs!

Keep your pet hydrated and soothe them by talking to them. Hearing a familiar voice will put your pet at ease in the midst of unfamiliar sights and sounds. Once your pet gets used to the atmosphere of a train, your holiday can truly begin!

How to travel with your pet dog in a train in India?

Parting with your dog hurts? Did you know that you can actually travel on a long-distance train in India with your pet dog? Find out the rules and the dos and don'ts of traveling with your pet dog in the Indian Railways.

Dos and Don'ts of traveling with your pet dog on an Indian train

  • Contact the Parcel Office well in advance for making arrangements for booking.
  • Make your own arrangements for the food and water for your dog. Sadly, since dogs are considered luggage by the Indian Railways, no meal is catered to them. Do boxes eat, after all?
  • If for some reason, you feel your dog is not feeling comfortable traveling with the strangers in the AC First Class Cabin, you should make the decision whether to keep it in your cabin or send it away for the break van by informing the TTE duly. Sometimes, distressed and discomforted dogs may become violent in the presence of strangers and attack them. In case of any such incident, you shall be legally responsible for any harm to your co-passengers arising thereof.
  • Never travel with unbooked dogs. This is like traveling without a valid ticket. If you get detected, you will be charged as per the rules.
  • Break any rules, even if advertently. The same applies to your dog too. If the owner or the pet is found breaking any rules, the pet shall immediately be transferred to the luggage van and a six-times tariff shall be charged as penalty.

Conclusion: Should you travel with your pet dog on an Indian train

50 tried and tested tips for travelling with pets in India

There’s an inexplicable joy in travelling with your pet , be it your dog , cat, guinea pig, or any other furry friend. However, holidaying with a pet requires a lot of prep that’s crucial for their safety and wellbeing, as well as paperwork and plenty of training. There’s a learning curve to planning trips with pets, but once you make a few, you get to know exactly how to go about it. We spoke with canine behaviourists, trainers, a veterinarian and pilot, as well as pet parents, who shared all you need to know before travelling with your pet.

Inputs from pet parents Arathi S. Unni (marketer, researcher and mom to two dogs, Sasha and Chloe); Sukanya Ray (mom to Kissy, the Shih Tzu, and senior subeditor at The Hindu); Aishwarya Mahurkar (cat mom to Momo); Sheela Joseph (IndiGo First Officer and dog mom); and Jaydev Calamur (dog dad to Luna, the lab); Namratha Rao , Canine Trainer & Behaviourist; Pranita Balar, Canine Consultant, Dognition Evaluator & Founder, Bark n Bond ; Dr. Michelle Simoes, a Mumbai-based veterinarian; Shraddha Vora of Alpha Angels Animal Trust, Goa; and Sahil Sharma and Amruta Patwardhan, co-founders of Koira Club and parents to a pack of four (Heidi, the Labrador; Shadow, the Siberian Husky; Pepper, the Beagle; and Asahi the Belgian Malinois).

Travelling with pets in India: the best travel tips to remember

Preparing and planning for the trip.

  • Before taking your pet on their first outstation trip, consult with your regular veterinarian.
  • When identifying destinations, pick places that will be good to stimulate them mentally and physically. They should be able to roam around, sniff, prance, explore— beaches, woods, waterfalls, hills, snowy areas, lakes, or even a house with a backyard!
  • Needless to stay, only book pet-friendly hotels. “Airbnbs have been my first port of call because they give you the flexibility to choose places that may have private, open spaces for pets. But there are many resorts and hotels across the country that allow pets today, including pitstop hotels. It’s best to call and book in advance, rather than cold-calling at the last minute,” says Unni. “You can also seek advice and recommendations from the reliable pet community online on where to stay.” Mahurkar recommends this Airbnb near Kolhapur and Nisarg Resort on the outskirts of Mumbai. For pet-friendly getaways near Mumbai, Sharma and Patwardhan recommend Wag-A-Bond and Wheyside in Karjat; White Haven in Khed Shivapur; Roar Ventures and L’attitude in Kamshet; Good Heavens in Kolad; Tents and Trails in Khopoli; and Belantara Beachfront in Vengurla.

Pre-travel training for dogs and cats

4. Teach your pet basic obedience cues—sit, stay, come (for recall), and settle. They must be trained and practised in different scenarios, around different distractions, before travel. For example, asking your dog to ‘stay’ before getting out of the car, or waiting in the vehicle while you step out.

5. Confinement training is recommended if you plan to travel with your pet. “There will be times when they have to be in a crate or confined by a leash, in a car or in a restaurant. This will ensure that your dog remains relaxed and comfortable when caged during travel. To get them used to confinement, start at home for short durations of one minute and slowly build it up,” advises Balar.

6. Begin crate training at least two to three months before your journey. You must train your pet to not only enter the crate on command but also to remain relaxed inside for several hours. If you crate-train well, your pet will remain as calm and comfortable as possible during air travel. For cats, this applies to the carriers they’ll be kept in during their time in the aircraft.

7. While they are in training, keep the door to the crate open so they can enter and leave as they please to begin with. Gradually proceed to crate training them at night and then moving the enclosure to another room. Most importantly, never use the crate as punishment. They should always see the crate as a happy place.

8. Pandemic pups and cats relate car rides to a trip to the vet, so this negative association needs to be reversed. This means a lot of fun car rides for your pet to get accustomed to being in a car. It could be a simple joy ride or a trip to a fun place like a park, as well. “I strongly recommend you start training your dog to be comfortable in a car at least two months before your journey,” says Rao. Desensitise your pet, beginning with sitting with them in the car in parking, followed by driving just around your society. Reward them with treats or pets whenever they are relaxed in the car and gradually increase the duration of the drive.

9. What helps most in tackling road sickness is behavioural training and teaching them to associate car rides with fun and safety. “Once my dog started trusting car rides, these episodes significantly reduced. She has now travelled as far as Kerala, Goa, and Kutch from Mumbai without throwing up,” says Unni.

10. Irrespective of whether you are travelling by rail, air, or road, carry water and their bowl. That’s basic because they tend to get stressed in transit, and need to be hydrated constantly. It helps modulate their body temperatures and calm them down.

11. Always carry extra collars, harnesses, and leashes—besides towels, sheets, and their bed if they’re fussy about it.

12. Keeping cleaning supplies like pet wipes, a paw hygiene spray, towels, brushes and blankets handy is a must. Add a shampoo to the list in case of emergencies—you never know what they decide to roll over. If you’re travelling with a puppy, pack pee pads!

13. Bring along their favourite toys, cushions, blankets, and other familiar items from home to make the trip as pleasant as possible for them.

Pet-friendly travel—things to keep in mind

14. Make sure all their vaccination records are up to date as you will need to submit copies with your flight carrier and the railways. You also need a fit-to-fly certificate from your veterinarian 72 hours before your scheduled departure for air and train travel. Keep them within reach at all times, in case local authorities ask for them. Better to be safe than sorry!

15. “Be up to date with the DHPPiL and rabies vaccines for dogs, and the Tricat and rabies vaccines for cats. You need to carry their vaccine records or pet passport while travelling,” says Dr. Simoes.

16. When in transit, always keep your dog’s registration papers in hand.

17. Cleanliness in public places is a major concern when it comes to travelling with pets, so it’s best if they are toilet trained. Plus, you must pick up after your pet! Be armed with scoopers, waste bags, newspapers, and a cleaning spray. “This goes a long way in making people more amenable to having pets around in public. It also makes you, as a responsible pet parent, more welcome” stresses Rao.

18. Try and keep calm yourself since pets feed off of our energy. If you are stressed and they sense a change in the tone of your voice, it will automatically make them anxious.

Food and snacks

19. If you’re using dry food, our practice is to carry food for an extra three days. “We use pre-packed meals by DogSpot.in , which contain all the necessary nutrition for our dogs,” says Sharma.

20. Some basic treats for the road—like biscuits, kibble, pet-friendly ice cream, boiled eggs, dry chicken, curd, and so on—work well for positive reinforcement.

21. If your pet is not prone to getting sick on the road, you could give them a small meal to keep them satiated. What they really need is basic hydration and a small quantity of food 90 minutes before the journey begins. “We were advised to avoid giving our dog heavy meals during the trip. So we restricted her food to small portions of kibbles but at regular intervals,” shares Ray.

Road trips with your pets

50 tried and tested tips for travelling with pets in India

22. Make sure your vehicle is fully prepared for your trip with your pets. Ensure your fluids are topped up, air pressure is on point, and your vehicle has been examined by a certified service technician to avoid mechanical issues—being stranded can add to the stress of being on the road for your pets and yourself.

23. Understand and plan your route so you can mark the spots ideal for pit stops. Take breaks for them (and you) to stretch, drink some water, take a loo break, and also sniff around. This not only gives them some exercise, but sniffing and exploring jogs their otherwise idle and anxious travelling brains.

24. There should be enough room for your pet in the car to allow for some movement. It’s important to make them feel at home, so carry their favourite toys and cushions.

25. In the case of large dogs, in-cabin organisation is important. “Each dog in our pack of four has their designated space in our Mahindra XUV 700 or Maruti Suzuki Alto. We use the dirtbag seat cover by Ruffwear and Trixie boot cover to ensure our dogs comfort and also to protect the interiors of our vehicles,” adds Sharma.

26. For single-day journeys eight hours and above, breaks every two to three hours are recommended. For longer road trips, an overnight stay at a pet-friendly hotel is advisable.

27. Keep the air conditioner at a pleasant temperature and avoid over-chilling the car. In less-polluted stretches, roll down windows.

28. Keep your pets stimulated with games or a quick run or walk during breaks. But avoid getting them over-excited.

29. Upon reaching your destination, stick to your pet’s regular daily schedule as much as possible.

30. When staying at unknown hotels and B&Bs with cats, you need to be extra careful with windows, balconies, and any open spaces.

Air travel with pets in India

Small dog is sticking his head out of a pet carrier on an airplane. rm

31. Air India and Akasa Air are the only two India airlines that allow pets aboard for domestic routes.

32. There are restrictions on weight, which includes the weight of the pet plus the crate they are in. While smaller pets like puppies, kittens, and dogs under 5kg can travel in the cabin with you, larger breeds require crate training beforehand as they’ll have to travel in the cargo section.

33. You need an IATA-certified crate to travel with your dog. The size of the crate should be in accordance with the size of your dog. A basic rule of thumb to get the correct size of crate is that your dog should be able to sit, stand, lie down on their side, and circle around comfortably inside. If it’s too small, your dog will be in a great deal of discomfort. And if the crate is too big, your dog may soil it.

34. Arrive early, at least four to five hours before your scheduled departure, so you have ample time to get through the formalities and let your pets do their business right before they’re dropped off.

35. When confining them to a crate for travel, make it as comfortable as possible for them. Keep their bedding, favourite blanket, and toys inside. Consider leaving something that belongs to you, like a T-shirt, so they’re comforted by your scent. Ensure positive reinforcement with praises and treats.

36. They must be fed at least 3 to 4 hours before the flight and given plenty of water to stay hydrated.

37. For international travel by air, consult with companies like The Bark Traveller , professionals with plenty of experience regarding the intricacies and tons of paperwork involved with pet travel and relocation.

38. For anxious and easily fearful pets, your vet may prescribe calming medications to help them have a less stressful experience during their flight. Some may advise against it because of the changing altitude and pressure in flights. But allow your trusted vet to take the final call.

39. Keeping your pet active the day of departure is a good idea. When tired out, they will be able to spend most of their time in the crate or carrier asleep.

Train travel with pets

50 tried and tested tips for travelling with pets in India

40. Indian Railways allows you to travel with pets in the first-class coupe. The most important step is to ensure you get confirmed first-class tickets. Either two or four seats are recommended for purchase because the booking increases your chances of getting the two-person coupe or the four-person cabin.

41. If you’re booking via an agent, ensure that your preference for a coupe or cabin is clearly communicated to avoid last-minute hassles on the day of departure.

42. Once you have your confirmed tickets, two days before a train journey , submit a physical letter at the reservation office of the main station—your starting point— requesting for a coupe. Here, you must present your confirmed seats and PNR number and let them know that you want to travel with your pet and need seats together. This step is crucial because the seating chart for any train journey is only made on the day of or a few hours before the journey.

43. On the day of the trip, you will get an SMS confirming your seats in the cabin or coupe. Get to the station at least two hours before time. Present your confirmed ticket at the parcel office at the station, as well as your pet’s fit-to-travel certificate from the vet and vaccine records. This step is needed because your pet is essentially travelling as cargo in the eyes of the railways. The authorities will then weigh your pet and levy parcel charges. While your pets don’t need a separate ticket to their name, you have to book either two or four tickets to ensure that you travel together in a coupe or cabin.

Travelling with cats—things to remember

44. Especially for cats, travelling by train is the most convenient option because you can place their litter box inside the coupe, without having to worry about getting off the coach.

45. It’s quite common for domesticated cats to not enjoy travelling or being out of their homes, unless they’ve been accustomed to it since kittenhood. While arranging for a sitter would be the preferred option more often than not, if they must travel, carry their crate or carrier along because it becomes their safe space in unfamiliar territory. Stuff it with something comfortable, like their favourite blanket.

46. You can also use some catnip in the carrier. Make it a happy place for them. There’s cat calming music that you can play during the journey to put them at ease.

Tackling motion sickness and anxiety

47. Keep an eye out for signs of distress during travel, like salivating or drooling, pacing up and down, whining, barking, or vomiting. You can work with a canine behaviour professional beforehand to get accustomed to such mannerisms, understand the signs better, and work on a personalised desensitisation programme.

48. If your pet is prone to getting sick or queasy in a moving vehicle, consult with your vet to know exactly what medication could help with motion sickness. “There could be a bit of trial and error before you find the perfect combination of medication and quantity of food before you travel,” warns Rao.

49. “Ondem works really well to curb nausea,” recommends Dr. Simoes. “If your dog or cat has a tendency to throw up during car rides, giving a dose every eight hours helps. Avomine is another option for dogs, but consult your vet personally about the dosage and which drug would best suit your pet.”

50. “For pets prone to anxiety, Gabapin helps calm them down,” advises Dr. Simoes. “It can be given half an hour before you start the journey.” “CBD oil works wonders for both anxiety and motion sickness; THC-free broad spectrum CBD oils work the best,” Dr. Simoes says. “Two drops of the 500mg CBD oil are enough for cats and small dogs; the dosage is up to 2-5ml for large dogs. Get your pet used to this a few days prior to travelling. Locally available Hexia tablets and the Cure By Design CBD oils also work well. Use these 30 minutes before starting your trip. You can give them another dose, if needed, after 6 hours.”

Safety, wellbeing, and first aid

Do your research and save contacts of local vets at your destination. Knowledge of local vets and animal welfare groups could prove life-saving in case of emergencies. Have your pets wear a tag on their collar with their name and your contact details. GPS trackers also help ensure their safety. “For dogs, it’s always a good idea to keep a bottle of hydrogen peroxide on you, in case they swallow something untoward and you need to make them throw up. Also carry activated charcoal tablets (Flatuna), in case they ingest something toxic,” advises Dr. Simoes. “Pack medicines to deal with vomiting, diarrhoea, allergies, and antiseptics. I’d suggest Ondem, Cetzine, and Flagyl, a probiotic, the dosage of which depends on your pet’s weight,” says Dr. Simoes. “Betadine liquid and gauze bandages are a must to dress wounds. Potassium permanganate powder will help stop bleeding from a cut nail or a deep scratch.”
