There are two types of cyclists in this world; those that want to go fast, and those that don’t. The upgraded and evolved, 2019 Trek Madone satisfies the appetite of those riders who dream about speed. Put yourself in the saddle of this bike for a second… You’re going flat-out… You’re dropping down on the handlebars… You’re tucking in your arms… You’re fixing your eyes on the speeding tarmac…. You’re hearing the bike pierce the air… You’re feeling the smooth roll of the wheels, every time you pedal… You’ve got rhythm, you’ve got symmetry, and you’re manufacturing speed like it’s nothing!

Our ride on the 2019 Madone is probably best described by what you’ve just read. Nothing but pure elegance from Trek’s flagship aero-road bike. We’ve mentioned that its fast. We’ve mentioned that it’s a wind weapon. But is it comfortable? As far as aerodynamically focused road bikes go, yes it is. Trek have managed to combine all three essential aspects of road bikes, into one. Lets find out how.

#1: Aerodynamics

The Madone SLR 6 follows a perfectly designed shape of a plane wing if you look it straight in the eyes. Trek’s 700 Series OCLV carbon fibre material forms the frame’s lightweight and aero features. The wind flow around and over the bike is seamless, and this is because of the down-tube that takes form in what Trek call, a KVF aero shape. Along with wing-like, Bontrager dropper handlebars; clinched by an aero stem, that uses the brand’s Blendr technology to integrate your cycling computer, without buying extra mounts. Even though the Madone is centred around aerodynamics, the designers at Trek kept a clear mind in adding practical features to the bike itself.  

#2: Comfort

Comfort is key with any road bike, especially if you intend to spend more than 2 hours in the saddle. The Madone’s comfort levels are acceptable for a bike of its standard. It comes with an adjustable Top-Tube IsoSpeed decoupler, which lets the seat post flex under impacts from irregular roads. The bar and stem of the bike, are also adjustable and can allow you to fine tune how the bike handles. Bontrager’s Montrose Elite lightweight saddle also made a difference in comfort. It was less restricting to leg movement and was quite well cushioned.

#3: Quality

Components can make or break any bike. Trek, however, are well acquainted with desires of road bike riders. Therefore, when questioning what components were best for the Madone, they looked at what was the most functional. For starters, going with flat-mount hydraulic disc brakes made braking solid and reliable on the Madone SLR 6. Minimizing the strain on your hands. And that’s a point a we’ll always argue. Integrating with the disc brakes was Shimano’s Ultegra drivetrain that literally gets smoother every time you shift.

Trek’s road bike geometry is always on point, and provides riders with a little bit of everything, from responsive handling to rider proportional sizing. The Madone SLR 6 makes use of the brand’s H1.5 FIT frame measurements. Which have been tried and tested countless times, with the Trek Segafredo, and Drops cycling teams. You can play around and find out what geometry works for you. However, our test bike was 56cm frame size, with which we got a 73.3-degree seat post angle, and 73.5-degree head-tube angle.

Keep it Fast and Low!

The Madone SLR 6 is like a fighter jet on steroids! Its unique and full-out aerodynamic design can pierce the air efficiently. The bike creates an ideal setup that almost comes as a second nature, to duck-down into an aero-tuck. Which gets you out of the full brunt of wind resistance.

Having been tested and raced by pro teams around the world at grand tours and one day events, Trek’s Madone has a perfect design for climbing and descending. Its low and fast! The cassette on the Ultegra drivetrain can feel like its meant for really hard pedaling, with its smaller gear ratio. Nevertheless, it was lenient enough to get us up a fair amount hills, without burning out. One thing that we really like about aero road bikes, is the stiffened up frame. During a sprint you simply have to pick a line with the bike, and it holds it. No matter how hard you hit the pedals. The same can be said coming down descends. It didn’t wobble around, instead it was smooth and firm, even when banking on corners. The slightly thicker handlebars supplied good grip, and great control over this race horse.

A good review is never complete without a few criticisms over a bike or product. And so sadly, yes. There were a few things we didn’t like on the Madone SLR 6. Mainly, the tyres. We’re not sure if this was just a bad batch of rubber, but we had a lot of punctures! Most of the punctures’ cause was from a simple stone, and we couldn’t fathom why. It could’ve been that we were running the tyre pressure too high, and thus we lowered it. Alas, no-luck. The punctures still accrued. We eventually put it down to the fact that Bontrager’s R3 Hard-case Lite tyre set, are not that durable. In fact, that’s quite a hick-up, because it’s enough to dampen your mood on a ride. Perhaps a tyre swap on this bike model, to one with a harder compound, is in order.

The big question is, does the 2019 Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc do enough to break away from the pack, and get you to the finish first? In our opinion, it does! As far as technology goes, the brand’s IsoSpeed and smoothly moulded carbon fibre, along with integrated disc brakes, are able to enhance your performance greatly. While the bike did lack a bit of agility, and the tyres weren’t impressive, the Madone is still elite when it comes to speed. It’ll keep you living life in the fast lane!

From the moment you first ride the Trek Madone SLR   6 Disc Speed you know you’re in for a treat. It looks fast, it feels fast, it is fast. Trek is one of the most recognizable bike brands in the world and the Madone has been one of its most successful bikes over the last two decades. With the Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed nothing changes there and it is a pure joy to ride. Its aero-geometry is, unsurprisingly, well thought out and it’s a bike that begs to be ridden fast. Standing up out of the saddle and laying down some top-end power will reward you with a burst of acceleration that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear: this is bike riding at its finest. The frame beneath you is stiff yet fast and responsive. That said, this isn’t a racing machine that lacks comfort. It handles well—you feel stable—and you can lean it through tight turns and corners with relative ease.

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed: The Good

The Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed is intelligently designed and easy to ride. It’ll remind you of why you first fell in love with riding bikes in the first place. For triathletes looking for a road bike that is both fast, comfortable, and easy to train on, you will not be disappointed. The Shimano Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes deliver sharp, crisp braking and all brake and gearing cables are neatly routed through the frame to maximize aerodynamics. Riding in the drops is incredibly fun on this bike—in fact, it almost begs you to get down in the drops and stay there, especially on more technical descents. Speed and comfort do not feel compromised in this position.  

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed: The Medium

When you’re parting with more than $6,000 for a bike, we think it’s more than fair to expect electronic shifting, but instead here you’ve got a Shimano Ultegra mechanical set-up, which seems a little surprising at this price point. Obviously, you don’t necessarily expect an aero road bike to be the greatest climbing machine, but we found the 50/34 compact gearing helped improve that considerably.

Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc Speed: Conclusions

This is a bike that’s easy to fall in love with on first ride, especially if you’re someone who loves riding hard and fast. It’s unashamedly aero and will tick all the boxes for triathletes looking for something close to tri speed on a road bike. You will definitely not be disappointed with how it handles and accelerates, but you could feel disappointed that you don’t have electronic shifting. If you’re OK with that (for this price tag), you’re going to have a lot of fun pedaling this bike to many PRs.

2019 Trek Madone SLR 6 review

A few months back Trek revealed the sixth iteration of its race-proven Madone road bike. In recent years the Madone has transformed into an all-out aero road machine promising uncompromising performance while still delivering a comfortable ride.

The latest version is said to further refine the Madone platform with the addition of a disc brake option and a revamped IsoSpeed dampening system among a raft of other improvements.

The Madone SLR frame sits at the top of the range and makes use of Trek’s lightest 700 series OCLV Carbon. Aside from the all-important disc brake option, only available on the SLR variant, the stand out feature on the Madone SLR is the adjustable IsoSpeed decoupler.

Trek’s marketing tells us that the new adjustable version of the IsoSpeed decoupler, now fitted to the top tube, is 17% more compliant on the softest setting while 21% stiffer on the firmest setting when compared to the previous Madone. Dosed with some heavy scepticism, I was pleasantly surprised by this feature, but more on that later.

We tested the Trek Madone SLR 6 Disc, equipped with a Shimano Ultegra 2×11 groupset and Bontrager Aeolus Comp wheels. The new SLR frameset is impeccably clean in its looks, with an integrated, cable-free cockpit and internal cable routing throughout. In the silvery-grey colour-way supplied, the bike reminded me of a stealthy navy frigate or fighter jet, filling my inner eight year old with glee. The bulky tubing on the SLR may not be to everyone’s taste, especially on the louder colour options, but in this navy inspired livery it feels well balanced.

The Madone SLR comes with an integrated aero seat post and on the 56cm frame, the 160mm post supplied as standard was just short of my required extension. Thankfully Trek also offer a 205mm post and had one delivered to us within two days. Given my abnormally long legs for my height, this shouldn’t be an issue for most, but still worth checking.

The two-piece bar and stem houses all cables to create a beautifully simple cockpit. The attachment point allows for +5 or -5 degrees in angle adjustment via a four bolt system neatly tucked away on the underside.

The Bontrager Aeolus Comp wheels piqued my interest as upon closer inspection you may note that these are aluminium rims with a carbon aero fairing. This somewhat unconventional approach provides the aero advantages you’d want on a bike like the SLR (and let’s be honest, the “aero look”) while keeping the price in check. While they’re not the full carbon deep sections you might be inclined to expect at this end of the market, this choice likely helps to squeeze the price under the R100 000 mark.

On a related note, although out of the box the wheels are fitted with 25C Bontrager tyres, the frame supports up to 28C tyres according to Trek, but it looks like there’s enough room to go even wider if you wish.

On the road

Typically a race-oriented aero bike has to make some compromises in terms of handling and ride quality in the pursuit of speed. The Madone SLR, however, offers a degree of comfort and handling not usually associated with this category of bicycle.

This is largely thanks to the IsoSpeed Decoupler system, which as the name suggests, decouples the frame at the junction of the top tube and seat tube. The two frame components are connected by a series of bolts and elastomer dampers with a sliding adjuster to change the feel of the frame.

With the damper on its most compliant setting, the ride is incredibly smooth while the frame still feels responsive. Sliding the adjuster to the firmest setting created a remarkable difference in the ride feel. Bumps in the road that had been almost entirely softened were now jarring and ever-present. To the point where on the bumpier road surfaces I had just sailed through unphased, I was now easing out of the saddle to find relief from the shocks. On a smooth surface, this harshness would be welcome and the obvious distinction in ride quality is a testament to just how effective the decoupler is.

As an aero race bike, the SLR feels great. Without a wind tunnel and a PhD I can’t say how much faster it is or isn’t, but suffice to say that in the drops it gives the impression of speed. The stiff frame lends itself to quick accelerations and the bike holds speed with ease on flats and rolling hills.

Given the class of bike, you can’t expect it to be an outwardly nimble climber, but aside from carrying a little extra weight, I was impressed with the feel on the climbs. Particularly out of the saddle where aero bikes tend to get increasingly awkward as the gradient ticks up, the SLR felt quite composed and comfortable. It’s by no means my first pick for a Hors catégorie ascent, but for any local road race it’s a perfectly capable climber.

Overall the bike handles well with a very stable, confident feel on the downhills. Although stable, the bike still responds well to sharp directional changes without the twitchiness that can accompany the aero label.

The Trek Madone SLR 6 delivers an unmatched ride quality among a crop of ever improving aero road bikes. Add to that great handling and good climbing manners, this aero road bike is quite simply a great road bike. The top end frame construction and dampening features do add to the price, but it seems Trek has indeed solved the aero plus comfort equation.

2019 Trek Madone SLR first-ride review: Upping the ante

The Trek Madone SLR takes all that was good with the previous Madone and made the new bike markedly better in seemingly every way. It’s now offered in both disc-brake and rim-brake variants, it’s supposedly just as aerodynamic as before (in both versions), the ride quality is more balanced and composed, and it even looks better with a shape that’s clearly derived from the predecessor, but yet cleaner and more refined.

Is the new Madone SLR the best aero road bike on the market? That question is impossible to answer with putting every other competitor through an exhaustive battery of objective and subjective tests, like the new Specialized Venge , Cannondale SystemSix , Giant Propel , and BMC Timemachine Road . But Trek sure seems to have made it harder for anyone else to claim the crown.

A clever new IsoSpeed design and a more balanced feel

While much of the attention surrounding the new Madone SLR revolves around its newly available disc brakes, it’s the new IsoSpeed system that should really be generating all the buzz.

But first, a primer on IsoSpeed for those of you who might not be entirely familiar with it: Instead of molding the seat tube, seatstays, and top tube together in a single structural unit as is usually the case, Trek “decouples” the seat tube from the rest of the frame, connecting it only with a pivot axle and a set of cartridge bearings. In this way, the seat tube is able to flex much more than usual when riding over rough terrain, and there’s a very significant improvement in ride quality as a result.

Pivot or not, though, deep-section seat tubes like what you typically find in an aero road bike aren’t exactly conducive to bending, so on the previous Madone, Trek used a novel dual seat tube design, where the integrated seatmast stepped down to a much smaller section at the IsoSpeed pivot. That smaller-diameter tube was then inserted into the outer aero-section seat tube, and bonded at the base. It definitely worked, but it wasn’t without its issues.

For one, the softness of the system was inversely related to the length of the tube, which is exactly what you don’t want; smaller bikes are usually piloted by shorter and lighter riders, not heavier ones. And unlike Trek’s Domane SLR endurance road bike, the system on the previous Madone wasn’t adjustable. It’s also worth noting that from a manufacturing standpoint, the double nested seat tube design wasn’t exactly easy to make.

And so for this new Madone SLR, Trek has shifted to a new L-shaped design, with the spring portion of the IsoSpeed system residing beneath the top tube. Since there’s more length to work with here, smaller bikes can now be set up from the factory to ride softer than bigger ones as they should, and because the unit is also now externally accessible, Trek was also able to give it the same adjustable stiffness functionality as on the Domane SLR.

According to Trek, that adjustment range is pretty generous, too. The frame is 17% softer in its softest setting than the old Madone’s fixed setting for a given size, but up to 21% stiffer for riders who want a firmer feel. To combat unwanted bounciness, there’s even a small elastomer-based friction damper hidden inside the seat tube to help control the motion while pedalling.

Another complaint on the old Madone was its somewhat disjointed ride: while the rear end stayed impressively planted on rough roads, the front end was comparatively harsh and unyielding. Trek hasn’t added the Front IsoSpeed device on the new Madone SLR like it did for the Domane SLR, but the new cockpit supposedly offers a little more flex nonetheless to help balance things out (more on that in a bit).

Disc-brake and rim-brake variants

As expected, Trek’s new aero road flagship finally adds disc brakes to the options list, along with the usual flat-mount caliper interfaces and 12mm-diameter front and rear thru-axles. Despite the decidedly non-aero brake hardware, though, Trek says that the new disc-brake Madone SLR posts virtually the same drag figures in the wind tunnel as the previous rim-brake Madone — a claim that’s all the more impressive considering that the predecessor was already widely regarded (and proven in third-party testing) to be among the most aerodynamic bikes on the road.

Trek hasn’t abandoned rim brakes just yet, though.

Rim brakes will be available throughout the entire Madone SLR line, and they’ve undergone some significant refinements. The rear caliper is mildly reshaped, but still blended into the seatstays, but the front caliper is virtually complete redesign.

Whereas the previous Madone had the front brake mounted to the front of the fork, the new Madone SLR flips the script and places the caliper on the back of the fork. It’s still a symmetrical roller-cam arrangement like before, but now the cable passes directly through the base of the steerer tube, and the wedge-and-roller assembly is turned almost 90° to create a more compact package. The old “vector wings” — better known as the spring-loaded “flappy doors” — that were once required for sufficient steering range are gone. There’s now a stop hidden inside the upper headset assembly to keep the bars from slamming into the top tube during a crash.

I didn’t have a chance to sample the new rim brakes, but it’s at least encouraging to see that they offer the same amount of easy adjustability as before, including left and right pad location, left and right arm angle, and left and right arm tension, all of which can be accessed through ports on the cosmetic caliper cover.

The switch to disc brakes carries an additional benefit, too: more tire clearance.

Officially, the maximum allowable tire size is 25mm for the rim-brake version, but 28mm for the disc-brake one. However, it’s worth noting that Trek’s internal guidelines for tire clearance are more conservative than typical, requiring no less than 6mm of space between the tire and the closest point on the frame or fork; 4mm is more common (and technically mandated for stock bikes), and some companies flout those guidelines altogether when making claims of what will fit.

As such, it seems safe to say that a 28mm-wide tire will comfortably fit in the rim-brake Madone SLR, and 30mm-wide ones will fit in the disc-brake version, which should provide more than enough cush for most paved roads.

One geometry to rule them all, but still plenty of fit options

Trek previously offered each Madone size in two fit variants: the slightly more upright H2 version that was aimed at everyday riders, and the more aggressive H1 fit with its substantially lower, and slightly longer, front end. Trek has now switched to a single geometry called H1.5 for the Madone SLR, however.

As the name suggests, the H1.5 fit splits the difference between H1 and H2. It’s about 1.5cm taller than the former and about 1cm lower than the latter. According to Trek, a new -12° stem option will still replicate that H1 fit for its sponsored pro athletes and anyone else that can comfortably ride in that sort of posture, while the standard -7° stem will still offer a sportier fit than the old H2.

Like before, there is no women-specific frame. There will be women-specific models, but those will only differ from the unisex versions in terms of components, component sizes, and colors.

Speaking of components, Trek has supplied the Madone SLR with an all-new two-piece aero cockpit that replaces the previous one-piece design and finally allows users to fine-tune the bar angle (by up to +/-5°). The flattened tops are also now swept back slightly (for better ergonomics, according to Trek), and there’s more wrist clearance while in the drops than before as well.

Perhaps best of all, the new two-piece configuration not only allows for the slightly softer ride quality already mentioned but also offers a wider range of width and length combinations than before. Stem length options are again limited to 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130mm, but in addition to those two -7° and -12° angles, there are now four bar widths instead of three: 38, 40, 42, and 44cm. Changing either the stem length or bar width later on will obviously be less expensive now, too.

Just as aero, and nearly as light

Trek says that its goal for the new Madone SLR was to “maintain aerodynamic drag performance of the current Madone (within 30g) across an averaged -12.5° to 12.5° yaw sweep.” In the end, the company claims a 3,216g of measured drag with the disc-brake Madone SLR vs. 3,202g on the old Madone — supposedly within the margin of error for the well-known Low Speed Wind Tunnel facility in San Diego, California.

Frame weights have gone up, but only very slightly. According to Trek, the current 56cm Madone 9 frame comes in at 1,053g, plus 376g for the matching fork. Claimed weight for the new rim-brake Madone SLR frame and fork are 1,112g and 378g, respectively, while the disc-brake version is slightly heavier still at 1,131g and 421g. Even so, Trek says the complete bike weights are identical for the rim-brake version — 7.1kg (15.65lb) for a 56cm size, without pedals. Claimed weight for the disc-brake Madone SLR is expectedly heavier, at 7.5kg (16.53lb), but supposedly still within the design targets.

Truly stunning custom paint options with Project One ICON

Naturally, Trek will once again offer the Madone through its Project One custom program, and there are apparently a lot of people who choose to go that route. According to Trek, fully half of all current Madones sold are Project One variants.

Project One buyers will be able to choose components, component sizes, and paint as usual, but new this year is the Project One ICON paint program, which includes six pre-configured color and design schemes that are clearly above and beyond the usual offerings.

There’s little point in wasting words describing what the new Project One ICON paint options look like. Instead, it’s far better to just show them to you.

Sampling the Madone SLR in cow town

Trek’s global headquarters of Waterloo, Wisconsin seems like an odd place to develop a world-class aero road bike like the new Madone SLR. There are seemingly more dairy cows here than people, no massive cols, and the rumbly pavement is poorly maintained. Winters here are long and punishing, and summer heat and humidity can sometimes make riding indoors in artificially cooled air oddly appealing.

Yet that environment still offers a surprisingly demanding setting. Harsh-riding bikes are downright punishing on the coarsely surfaced tarmac and annoyingly pronounced expansion joints, and mushy chassis bog down on the steep and punchy climbs that dot the dairy roads west of town, not to mention the unofficial sprint lines marked by the frequent town and county limit signs. The downhills may be short, but they’re similarly steep and fast, and coupled with the lumpy road surface, it’s easy to get in over your head.

The previous-generation model was widely regarded as a benchmark in the category, with independently verified best-in-class aerodynamic performance, a surprisingly accommodating ride quality thanks to Trek’s truly innovative IsoSpeed “decoupler” at the seat cluster, and one of the most highly integrated designs in the industry.

So is the new version really better? Actually, yes, it is.

First and foremost, the improvement in ride quality is striking. The new IsoSpeed design is unquestionably smoother than the old one, but I didn’t notice a hint of bounciness in the saddle even with the IsoSpeed slider set in “full party mode.” Even better is the more controlled ride up front, which is less chattery and punishing than the one one-piece cockpit. It’s still nowhere near as pillowy as what the IsoSpeed offers out back, but it nevertheless makes for a more balanced feel front-to-back and a more planted sensation in general.

Remember what I said about those dairy roads being a little coarse and occasionally steep? One descent there dropped a paltry 70m (230ft) in elevation, and yet I still easily topped 80km/h (50mph) on the way down. Thankfully, the new Madone SLR felt perfectly at home in that moment, with neither the twisty corners nor the less-than-ideal pavement doing much of anything to upset its composure.

Those twisty corners also only served to confirm another of my favorite traits about the Madone: its impeccable handling. High-speed stability is truly confidence-inspiring, but yet it’s still plenty eager to change direction when necessary, and with little more than a subtle lean required to initiate the turn. Aside from the difference in head tube length, Trek changed nothing about the Madone’s frame geometry, and in this case, that’s a very good thing.

Bottom bracket stiffness feel about on-par with the old model, which is to say it’s very good and amply efficient. Front-triangle torsional stiffness seems to have improved slightly, though, which is a welcome change seeing as how I found the previous Madone to be a bit lacking in that regard.

Speaking of bottom brackets, Trek is soldiering on with its proprietary BB90 press-fit design . I didn’t experience any creaking either during my initial test ride in Wisconsin, or subsequent rides back on local roads in Colorado, but it’s still only been a few days so far. Even given the weight penalty, I still wish Trek had switched to a wide-format shell with more robust bearing options, such as PF86, T47, or even BB386EVO. But such is life.

I have no complaints so far about the new cockpit, however. The sweptback tops indeed feel more natural to hold (although I’d still prefer they were taped from the factory), and the additional wrist clearance while in the drops is most welcome.

But is the Madone SLR fast? And is it light? I can only objectively confirm the latter, as my 52cm sample weighed 7.70kg (16.98lb) without pedals, but with cages — not far off from the claimed figures, but still within the ballpark given the thick coats of paint (and paint is surprisingly heavy). As for speed, well, it certainly seems easier to maintain high speeds on the Madone SLR, which suggests that it’s just as aerodynamically slick as before.

However, what I found more interesting was the fact that I stopped thinking about it being a good aero road bike, and more about how it was a good road bike, period: capable, composed, planted, responsive. Those are all traits I value for any road bike, and the fact that companies have finally figured out how to make everything converge into a single machine that also happens to be aerodynamic is something that is long overdue.

Bike & Bulky Item Returns

If you wish to return your bike to us please keep it in the box it arrived in and call us on 01772 644340 and we will arrange a collection.

Please note the following:

  • a) If we have sent you the incorrect bicycle, we will cover the cost of collection and delivery of the correct model.
  • b) If we have delivered the bicycle you ordered, but upon inspection you decide it is not the bike for you, we will charge you £50.00 for the collection.

Please do not ride the bike as a full refund cannot be given if the bike has been used or damaged.

Return Items to a store

Any item (excluding food and underwear) can be returned to any Leisure Lakes Bikes store not just the one you made your purchase at, including those made online. The item must be returned in ‘showroom condition’, with its original packaging, tags and with a valid receipt/delivery note.

Wrong size or you don't like the item?

If returning items that are not suitable for either refund or exchange you are accountable for the delivery cost in returning it to us. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

New faulty items/ Wrong Item Received

If you have received items that are faulty or not what you ordered send them back to us (using the steps above) and we will cover the delivery cost of the return if it is within 14 days of delivery. If we have supplied the correct product, it is not faulty or it is outside of the 14 days we can not be liable for your postage charges. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

In the event that you have received items that are fault or not what you ordered, please send them back to us as soon as possible. Only in these cases will we cover the cost of the return shipping charges.

Faulty Items

If you have received items that are faulty please send them back to us using the steps above. Please include a covering letter describing the fault and if you would like the item replacing or refunding. Once the item arrives back at our Mail Order Centre you will receive an email notifying you about the progress. Faulty items are then forwarded onto the suppliers to confirm the warranty issue. Please be patient with us as we need to receive this confirmation from the suppliers before we can process your request for a replacement/refund.

When returning the item please use Royal Mail1 st Class Recorded* so that you have a tracking reference just in case! If your item arrived faulty we will refund your postage cost. If the item was in full working order at the time of delivery to you, we can not refund your return postage cost.

*In the event that you return a faulty/incorrect item we will refund your postage charge as long as it is 1 st Class Recorded or a lesser value service. We do not refund premium services.

Refunds will be processed using the same method of payment used for the original purchase. Credit and debit card refunds must be made to the card used for the original transaction, cheque payments will be refunded in cash but due to banking restrictions can only be refunded at least 14 days after the original purchase date. Due to the high incidence of fraud we regret that we are unable to offer any refund without a valid receipt/delivery note.

Refunds will be made for faulty or incorrect items, including any delivery charge incurred by the buyer (excluding ‘Special Delivery’) in the return of the item. If the products you ordered are delivered to you in good condition but you wish to return them for any reason we will refund the full value of the goods excluding any carriage charge upon receipt of your returned goods.

Items won’t be considered lost until after 15 working days of items beingdispatched. Once the 15 working days are up we will issue a refund or replacement.

Not received your order?

If you have not received your order please call us on 01772 644340 and a member of staff can confirm the shipping date. Unfortunately we cannot consider an item to be lost until 15 working days has passed (according to Royal Mail procedure). Once the 15 working days have passed we will be able to issue a full refund or resend your order.

2019 Trek Madone SLR – First Look

Yesterday we shared the new BMC Timemachine ROAD – a bike 5 years in the making. And at 5 years BMC is delivering a new bike in the timespan we typically expect for generational gaps between new frames. But Trek it seems doesn’t except “typical” expectations. What others took 5 years to do – they decided to do in 3. Meet the all new Trek Madone SLR – a bike that starts with the still front of the pack 2016 Madone and pushes the boundaries yet again.

The Trek Madone SLR

The first thing to know about the new Madone is that there is not one new frame being introduced, but in reality two. Yes you will be able to get a Madone with either disc or rim brakes (something almost unheard of with the latest generation of super aero bikes). And while some may see that as a fairly easy offer – the truth is quite the opposite. Trek is producing two sets of frames with two sets of forks both of which are aero optimized for their specific needs. (The flip side is that while the last Madone was offered in both H1 and H2 geometries, the new SLR gets a single goldilocks H1.5 geometry.) So where did Trek start with this new bike – the new Madone aims to be the best all-around race bike and a refinement of the current Madone. Trek engineers wanted to improve comfort, fit, integration, and overall refinement over the current Madone while keeping or bettering it aerodynamically and at the scales.

Did they succeed? Lets start with aerodynamics. Final new Madone numbers show an average of 3216g across a -12.5° to 12.5° yaw sweep vs the current Madone at 3202g. A 14g difference that was within Trek’s project goal and within a wind tunnel’s experimental error band.

And at the scales Trek had to deal with adjustable compliance technology, a rebound damper, split bar and stem, and a redesigned aesthetic that they believe make this the best all-around race bike but also add quite a bit of weight. The disc brake bike was assigned a target of 7.5kg. The result is that the rim brake bike matches the current Madone (7.1kg), and the all-new disc brake bike that weighs in at 7.5kg depending on paint scheme.

Knowing that Trek hit their goals – lets dive into what’s new with this bike. And it all starts with the new Top Tube Adjustable IsoSpeed. Adjustable IsoSpeed was first released on the seat tube of Trek’s Domane line. Top tube IsoSpeed on the Madone SLR is adjustable to customize the compliance to rider preference and terrain.

The Madone Adjustable Compliance technology is comprised of two frame elements integrated into each other just like the Domane SLR but has been rotated into the top tube for aerodynamic advantage. This method also aids in more uniform compliance for all frame sizes. Lastly, Trek has implemented hardware on the back of the seat tube that offers rebound damping characteristics to the bike. The two frame elements are connected by the IsoSpeed Decoupler and the bolted joint at the front. In between the two frame elements is a vacant space with an adjustment slider that can move along the entire path. The seatmast element utilizes the IsoSpeed Decoupler to transfer the aft deflection of the upper aero section of the seatmast to an upward deflection of the lower seatmast element. The vacant space allows the lower seatmast to deflect in the upward direction while the main frame top tube element remains independent from the lower seatmast. The slider contacts both the lower seatmast element and main frame top tube element to limit the upward deflection of the lower seatmast per the rider’s preference. If the slider is towards the front of the frame, a rider will experience more compliance because of the greater vacant space that allows the lower seatmast to deflect more. If the slider is near the back of the frame towards the IsoSpeed Decoupler, a rider will experience less compliance because the slider is inhibiting deflection in the vacant space in front of it.

The result is that the new Madone is up to 17% more compliant over its predecessor when set to the most compliant setting and 21% stiffer in the stiffest setting. Top Tube IsoSpeed is damped to rebound in a smooth and controlled motion providing the rider more stability. Rebound is reduced by 13% on the New Madone SLR over the current Madone.

The new IsoSpeed is applied to Trek’s new H1.5 geometry. H1.5 is meant to split the difference between the aggressive positioning the pros use and the slightly more relaxed geometry us meremortal age groupers are looking for.

The previous Trek Madone was one of the first truly integrated aero road bikes and the Madone SLR builds on that legacy. Trek’s bar and stem for the new Madone has been separated into a more traditional, yet still proprietary system. This new set up offers 40 possible configurations versus the 26 possible configurations when considering the H1/H2 frames. Riders also get the added benefit of +/-5 degrees of bar roll to allow deeper fit refinement. The -7deg stems offer the industry standard set up and the -14deg stems are intended to allow current Madone H1 riders to match their same fit as well as offer more flexibility to new consumers. Stems are offered in 90mm to 130mm lengths in both -7° and -14° angles. The bar receives one additional width size and is offered in Variable Radius Compact Flare (VRCF) fit in widths from 38cm to 44cm. With these expanded options, changing fit is now easier and more affordable.

As on the current Madone and now again on the new Madone, the IsoSpeed system once again frees up the seat post to use the Kammtail Virtual Foil technology. The seat post head continues to use an independent pinch bolt and rail clamp system to allow for infinite tilt and setback adjustment. Also, new for the seat post is an integrated internal wedge design to provide a cleaner look to the back of the seatmast. No more external wedge clamp design and now the back of the seatmast will be fully painted. The post now comes with four color options as well as full customization through Trek’s P1 program. Lastly, to integrate safety into the design, a Flare R light mount has been designed to clip onto the back of the seat post head and offers a clean and integrated look.

The new Madone SLR is available in 4 builds today. All SLR frames are built with Trek’s 700 Series OCLV Carbon and are available in multiple color ways (with some paint options having an upcharge of $500). At the top we have the Madone SLR 9 Disc starting at $11,999.99. The SLR 9 gets Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, Bontrager Aeolus XXX 6 wheels, and a Bontrager Montrose saddle with carbon rails.

Next is the SLR 8 rim brake model starting at $7,499. For that you get Bontrager Aeolus Pro 5 wheels, Shimano Dura-Ace (mechanical), and a Bontrager Montrose Elite saddle with titanium rails.

The SLR 6 Disc rounds out the last two models and is available in both mens and womens models for $5,999.99.  Women specific touchpoints like saddle, handlebar width and stem length that are spec’d to fit most women better from the start. Both models get a Bontrager Aeolus Comp Disc wheelset and Shimano Ultegra mechanical. Our Thoughts

With such a short hiatus between new bikes we are seriously impressed with the amount of innovation in this new bike. Trek Madone range: Which model is right for you?

Despite being named after Lance Armstrong’s favourite training climb , the wind cheating Trek Madone is destined for flatter terrain. The aero bike within the brand's wide ranging collection received a major overhaul in its sixth iteration, launched for 2019.

Whilst the outline of the bike does not look dissimilar to the 2015 launched fifth version, a lot has changed when we explore the top end Trek Madone SLR in greater detail.

In the past, the Madone models were split into SLR (top end), SL (middle) and 9 Series (entry level) versions. For 2019, there is just one SL model, at £3600, and the rest are SLR - where a frameset is £4000.

The geometry has been adjusted as well. Trek splits its fits into 'H1' - low and agressive, and 'H2' - a little more relaxed.

For 2019, the surviving SL uses an 'H2' fit whilst the SLR offers an 'H1.5' geo. This was developed alongside Drops women's team, sponsored by Trek during 2018, and means there's a choice of low and high-stack stems provided to help riders fine tune the perfect fit.

In addition, the two piece aero bar can be tilted to +/-5 degrees, something that's very rarely possible on an integrated cockpit. The cables are hidden, which looks great and cuts resistance further, and the new models have 'Blendr' compatibility, which allows you to use Trek's system to mount your cycling computer and lights with minimal disruption.

Typically, aero bikes are not known for their comfortable ride quality. However, whilst Trek has offered a rear IsoSpeed decoupler on its Madone for some time, the new SLR provides an adjustable top tube decoupler.

Trek Madone

The IsoSpeed system was introduced for the brand's endurance Domane, and creates flex in the frame which helps to dampen out road buzz. This new adjustable top tube version is tweaked via a 2.5mm Allem key and allows riders to switch between a level that's 17 per cent more compliance, vs one which is 21 per cent stiffer, than the previous 2015 model.

Moving the position of the decoupler reduces rebound caused by the flex, and it also allows for a better level of consistency across all frame sizes - formerly, smaller frame sizes suffered due to a shortening of the spring involved in the movement.

Continuing into the 2019 range is Trek's windtunnel tested Kammtail Virtual Foil (KVF) tube shaping, which employs a truncated-tail design to slice through the wind.

Trek no longer produces women's specific frames , instead offering the Madone SLR in women's and men's builds, the former of which comes specced with narrower handlebars and a women's saddle.

The SLR models differ from the sole surviving SL by virtue of the H1.5 fit, top tube IsoSpeed Decoupler, and the use of a higher end carbon - 700 OCLV ( more on OCLV here ).

There are rim and disc brake models on offer, and all versions useBontrager Aeolus Comp 5 wheels. If you want to personalise your Madone SLR, you can do so with a Project 1 paintjob, too.

The SL, by comparison, has the old IsoSpeed decoupler, H2 fit, and uses 500 OCLV carbon which will be fractionally heavier.

In 2019, mass protests hit Russia’s capital: in July, August, and September people gathered on the streets dissatisfied with the electoral process in the Moscow City Duma election. Many independent candidates were barred from participation in the election and refused registration by the Electoral Commission of Moscow, citing multiple reasons including invalid signatures collected for candidates. Four of those candidates were Navalny’s associates and allies such as Ilya Yashin, Lyubov Sobol, Vladimir Milov, and Ivan Zhdanov. They used various communication instruments inspired by Navalny to gather one of the largest demonstrations of the 2010s in Russia’s capital.

Background: The epidemiology, clinical course, and outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Russian population are unknown. Information on the differences between laboratory-confirmed and clinically diagnosed COVID-19 in real-life settings is lacking.

Methods: We extracted data from the medical records of adult patients who were consecutively admitted for suspected COVID-19 infection in Moscow between 8 April and 28 May 2020.

Results: Of the 4261 patients hospitalized for suspected COVID-19, outcomes were available for 3480 patients (median age, 56 years; interquartile range, 45-66). The most common comorbidities were hypertension, obesity, chronic cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Half of the patients (n = 1728) had a positive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), while 1748 had a negative RT-PCR but had clinical symptoms and characteristic computed tomography signs suggestive of COVID-19. No significant differences in frequency of symptoms, laboratory test results, and risk factors for in-hospital mortality were found between those exclusively clinically diagnosed or with positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RT-PCR. In a multivariable logistic regression model the following were associated with in-hospital mortality: older age (per 1-year increase; odds ratio, 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.06), male sex (1.71; 1.24-2.37), chronic kidney disease (2.99; 1.89-4.64), diabetes (2.1; 1.46-2.99), chronic cardiovascular disease (1.78; 1.24-2.57), and dementia (2.73; 1.34-5.47).

Conclusions: Age, male sex, and chronic comorbidities were risk factors for in-hospital mortality. The combination of clinical features was sufficient to diagnose COVID-19 infection, indicating that laboratory testing is not critical in real-life clinical practice.
