Planning a 2-week Central Europe itinerary is one of the best ways to see some of the most beautiful towns and cities on the continent without breaking the bank. The countries of Hungary, Czechia, Poland, Austria and the like have so much to offer visitors including fairytale-like Old Towns, beautiful natural scenery, and unique national cuisines.

If you want an introduction to Europe, are keen to dip your toe into Eastern Europe or are just interested in this unique and beautiful part of the world, you can’t go wrong with exploring the lovely nations that makeup Central Europe.

So whether you have many weeks to spend in Central Europe or are just keen to plan the perfect 2-week itinerary, we’re here to help you plan your ideal trip to this incredible region.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Central Europe?

One question that many potential visitors ask themselves before they go to Central Europe is how long they should spend in the region. And my answer is that it really depends on what you want to see and how many places you want to visit.

The region is vast and encompasses several different countries and sub-regions and one could easily spend months in Central Europe and continually find new things to see and do.

Prague's Old Town Square

If you only have a short amount of time to play around with and want to get the most out of your trip to this region, I would recommend planning to spend no fewer than 10 days for your trip.

A 10-day Central Europe itinerary is enough to give you a good feel for the region, however, it will likely prevent you from digging deeper and visiting more offbeat areas or spending longer in various destinations.

If you can, we think that the ideal period of time for a short trip is 2 weeks. Spending 2 weeks in Central Europe will allow you to hit some top cities in the region and also give you the chance to really get to know various countries and smaller towns and municipalities.

You can both get the opportunity to dig a bit deeper and gain a good understanding of the region while also still whetting your appetite for where you can visit next time you get a chance to travel to Central Europe.

One thing to keep in mind no matter how long you have to dedicate to your Central Europe travel itinerary is that it is impossible to see absolutely everything so make sure to prioritise what you want to visit.

Getting Around Central Europe

In general, it depends on your budget and which countries you plan to visit in Central Europe to figure out the best transport options, however, there are a number of different routes you can take (no pun intended).

If you’re planning to rely on public transportation while on your Central Europe trip, then your best bet in most countries would be to plan to get from city to city by the wonderful train. Train travel in a lot of Europe is some of the best in the world and, for the majority of Central European countries, this region is no exception.

Trains are typically reliable, reasonably quick, and comfortable and there are ample routes between major municipalities that you’re unlikely to be standard or have to make a million connections so long as you’re not going too far off the typically trodden path.

Olomouc, Czech Republic

Trains are generally fairly affordable, however, if you want to get the best prices, it is always a good idea to book your journey at least a few days, if not a few weeks, in advance. We recommend using a service called Omio to do this — it aggregates most routes and will show you the cheapest prices available for your travel dates.

The bus is another good, viable option for intercity transit in Central Europe. Bus routes and plentiful and the typical quality of the coaches is good, as well. Bus journeys tend to be slightly more affordable than train journeys, however, they are also not nearly as comfortable and tend to be a bit slower as you have to contend with traffic, etc.

If you’re interested in getting around Central Europe by bus, I recommend booking through Omio again, as well.

If you want to have a bit more flexibility, have an easier time at getting off the beaten path, or simply don’t want to be at the mercy of inconvenient train or bus timetables, then renting a car could be a good option for you.

While you really don’t need a car in big cities and towns in Central Europe (all of the city centres are incredibly walkable and public transit is quite good), it can be really helpful if you want to get out into nature or visit some areas with fewer public transit connections.

If you’re interested in hiring a car in Central Europe, we suggest using Rentalcars.com in order to find great prices on a car rental.

Prague-Vienna-Budapest Itinerary

The most iconic of the Central Europe itineraries is arguably a route through the incredible cities of Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Visiting the capital cities of Czechia, Austria and Hungary is sure to leave you starry-eyed and ignite your wanderlust to explore the region in more depth.

Taking 2 weeks for a Budapest-Vienna-Prague itinerary is quite ideal as it allows you to explore these three incredible cities while also stopping at a few great places and smaller towns and cities in between.

Days 1-3: Prague

Sart this classic Central Europe itinerary in the incredible, iconic Czech capital of Prague. This city is incredibly famous and popular for a reason: it is absolutely beautiful, deeply historic, easy to navigate and packed with fun and interesting things to do. Because you have three full days to spend in Prague, you also have the opportunity to cover quite a bit of ground and really get to know this great city.

Of course, make sure to take the time to visit all the top spots in Prague including the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, the astronomical clock, the Jewish Quarter, the Lennon Wall and much more. It’s also vital that you take the time to sample some traditional Czech cuisine and, of course, the inimitable Czech Pilsner.

Czechia has some of the best beer in the entire world and it is such an important part of the culture that you really can’t miss sampling some of this iconic beverage. Oh, a pint is also famous for being cheaper than a bottle of water — so make sure to enjoy those affordable prices in Prague!

If you’re interested in seeing more of the Czech Republic beyond its capital, use one of the days in this itinerary to go on a day trip. There are countless amazing places to visit from Prague and it is sure to give you a great view of what life is like in Czechia.

If you want to get a bit off the typical tourist trail, it is possible to head to the incredible town of Olomouc as a day trip. You could also head west and visit cities like Karlovy Vary or Pilsen.

After enjoying several great days in Prague, it’s time to head on to your next destination!

Day 4: Cesky Krumlov

Though often treated as a day trip, plan to leave Prague on your fourth day and head south to spend a night in gorgeous Cesky Krumlov . Known for being one of the most picturesque towns in the Czech Republic, you would be forgiven for thinking that you’ve been transported into a fairytale.

Cesky Krumlov is often struggling under the weight of overtourism, so it’s a good idea to spend a night here in order to minimise your impact on this small town.

And while you’re here, there is quite a lot to do. Take the time to get lost in the old town, wander through the massive Cesky Krumlov castle and simply enjoy the scenery along the Vltava River.

Where to Stay in Cesky Krumlov

Pension Kristian – This plush hotel is located a stone’s throw from the castle. They have plenty of great rooms and also offer free on-site parking for those on a road trip.

Over the next two days, it’s time to leave the Czech Republic and venture south into beautiful Austria. And your next stop will be the historic city of Salzburg .

Famous as the filming location for The Sound of Music and as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg is also home to some of the most iconic Christmas markets in the region if you happen to be visiting in December.

With two days in Salzburg, you will have time to visit the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress, wander through the old town, see the gardens at Mirabell Palace and maybe even visit a traditional Austrian beer all at the Augustiner Brau brewery.

Days 7-10: Vienna

One of the most iconic cities to visit on any Central European trip is Vienna , Austria’s gorgeous capital. Known for its grand architecture, fantastic cafe culture and beautiful cityscapes, Vienna is really an incredible city to visit no matter what kind of European route your find yourself on.

Take at least two days to explore the city to its fullest, taking in all of the main sites like the Hofburg Palace, Vienna State Opera House, Schonbrunn Palace, the Spanish Riding School, Belvedere Palace and many others.

Also, no visit to the Austrian capital would be complete without spending a least a little bit of time relaxing in a streetside cafe and experiencing the famous coffee and pastry culture that Vienna is so well known for.

Because you have the time if you’re following this particular itinerary, it is also a great idea to go on a day trip from Vienna.

One of the most popular is to the Slovak capital of Bratislava , which is only about an hour from Vienna. You could also head to Austria’s lovely second city of Graz , which is also a great place to visit as a day trip (or to spend more time if you want to extend your trip)!

Hofburg Palace in Vienna

Where to Stay in Vienna

Motel One Wien – Hauptbahnhof – A great, centrally located hotel that is situated close to the main train station. They have a number of clean and comfortable rooms and there is an option to include breakfast in the morning.

Hotel Brauhof Wien – If you’re after a bit of luxury in Vienna, then this 4-star hotel is a great option for you. Centrally located, they have numerous chic, clean and comfortable rooms available and great amenities to make your stay in Austria’s capital a great one.

Hostel Ruthensteiner – A great, family-run hostel that is perfect for budget backpackers and solo travellers. They have both private rooms and dorm beds available and great common areas to meet other travellers.

Days 11-14: Budapest

One of the most iconic cities to have on any Central Europe itinerary has got to be Budapest. Arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Budapest is full of incredibly interesting things to do and offers so much beyond its main sights.

Take your first few days in Budapest to visit the top sights un the Hungarian capital, including the Parliament Building, Andrassy Utca, the Citadel, Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle and Matthias Church, the Dohany Street Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter and the moving shoes on the Danube memorial.

Of course, no trip to Budapest is complete without taking the time to soak in a thermal bath in at least one of its iconic bathhouses, taking a leisurely stroll along the Danube River, and partying until dawn at the famous ruin bars.

There are so many things to do in Budapest during the time allotted in this itinerary that I wouldn’t even recommend taking a day trip during this time.

Budapest

Where to Stay in Budapest

Butterfly Home Danube   –   A lovely boutique hotel located close to the banks of the Danube on the Pest side of the city. They offer a range of private rooms with breakfast included daily.

Monastery Boutique Hotel – A wonderful luxury option, this boutique hotel is located a stone’s throw from Fisherman’s Bastion in the quiet Buda side of the city. They are a range of plush rooms on offer and numerous other amenities to ensure that you have the best time in the Hungarian capital as possible.

Lavender Circus Hostel – A small cosy hostel that is well located and the staff go out of their way to ensure travellers meet each other and have a good time.

Have More Time?

If you have more than two weeks and want to expand on this Prague-Vienna-Budapest itinerary, then you have a lot of options available. First off, you could visit a few more places in the Czech Republic — including Olomouc, the second-largest city of Brno or the industrial city of Ostrava.

You could also extend by heading into Poland and exploring the cities of Krakow, Warsaw, Wroclaw, and Poznan .

If you’re interested in seeing more of Austria, consider heading south to the country’s second-largest city of Graz.

The beautiful city of Graz, Austria

Hungary-Slovakia-Poland Itinerary

If you’re more interested in heading a bit off the well-trodden path, then this is a great route for you! Starting is the wonderful city of Budapest, this itinerary instead winds you through Slovakia, into the imposing High Tatras and onto some charming Polish cities.

Days 1-4: Budapest

Begin your itinerary in Budapest, which is an excellent starting point when exploring this area of the world as it can act as a gateway to Eastern Europe.

And while I think that the more days you have to spend in Budapest, the better, the three full days allotted in this itinerary is more than sufficient to get a great feel for the city, see its top sites, and even venture a bit deeper into the Hungarian capital.

Days 5-6: Bratislava

From Budapest, hop on a train or bus (or rental car!) to the Slovakian capital of Bratislava! This capital city is quite small and often only visited as a day trip from Vienna, however, you can a bit more out of the city if you opt to spend a night and one full day here.

You can take your time when it comes to visiting the top sites and wandering through the charming Old Town, where you would be a bit rushed if you only had a day trip here.

While Bratislava certainly isn’t the most beautiful or exciting of Central European capitals, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth visiting and you’re sure to enjoy yourself in this lovely, compact city.

Where to Stay in Bratislava

Smart&Green Living by Ambiente – This is a wonderful place to stay in Bratislava if you want a clean and comfortable self-catering apartment with hotel-like amenities. There are a range of different apartments available and its central location is ideal for exploring the Slovak capital.

Hostel Folks – If you’re travelling on a budget or solo, then this hostel is an excellent choice. There are a range of dorm beds available, great common areas, and a convenient central location making it the perfect base to explore Bratislava.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Bratislava hotels!

Bratislava skyline

Days 7-8: High Tatras

After spending a day in the Slokavian capital, it’s time to head to the incredible High Tatras that straddle northern Slovakia and southern Poland. These beautiful mountains are popular retreats for locals but tend to see fewer foreign tourists, especially on the Slovak side.

If you’re interested in visiting the Tatras in Poland, one of the most popular and developed towns to is Zakopane, which is great as a summer retreat for hiking and mountain sports and also an affordable winter skiing destination.

On the Slovakian side, consider heading to sleepier Ždiar, which doesn’t get nearly the amount of tourism as Zakopane but has its own charm and is very much worth visiting. It is also a ski resort in the wintertime.

Days 9-12: Krakow

From the chilled-out vibes of the mountains, it’s time to head to another of the most iconic cities in Central Europe — Krakow. This beautiful city is compact and absolutely charming and very much worth exploring for a few days.

We recommend planning to spend 3 days in Krakow , which is plenty of time to see the Old Town and castle, explore the trendy Kazimierz quarter, visit some of the city’s moving museums and to go on a day trip or two.

If you’re visiting Krakow, note that it is within easy reach of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp museum. This makes for an excellent and important, though harrowing, day trip. Alternatively, consider visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine which is definitely more lighthearted.

Krakow's Market Square

Where to Stay in Krakow

Q Hotel Kraków  – A great mid-range hotel, located a little outside the city centre but well connected by public transport. There are a range of clean and comfortable rooms to choose from with the option to include breakfast.

PURO Krakow Kazimierz – An excellent luxury option in Krakow, this cool hotel is located in the hip and trendy Kazimierz neighbourhood of the Polish city. They have a number of chic rooms available and even a spa and wellness centre to take the stress out of all of your travels.

Mundo Hostel – one of the best hostels to stay at in Krakow if trying to keep costs down . They offer a delicious free breakfast and nightly social activities that are a great way to meet other travellers to experience Krakow’s famous nightlife.

Days 13-14: Wroclaw

On your final stop, it’s time to get a bit off the beaten tourist path in Poland and head to one of the country’s most charming cities, Wroclaw. This city is compact but oozing with personality and classic Central European vibes that you’re sure to fall in love in the short time you have here.

Known for being a vibrant student city, Wroclaw also has a lot of quirks hidden throughout it’s classic Polish Old Town. One of the most fun things to do in Wroclaw is to go “dwarf hunting.” Basically, there are countless small dwarf statues scattered throughout the city centre and they’re always up to something different.

There are also many lush parks and even some islands in the river to hang out on, as well.

Where to Stay in Wroclaw

PURO Wrocław Stare Miasto – A modern hotel located a few hundred metres from the Old Town Square, this is a great place to stay in Wroclaw for couples or solo travellers. There is an option to include breakfast in the daily rate.

Grampa’s Hostel – A budget traveller’s dream as it offers free breakfast, free dinners some days of the week and also organises a range of great social activities that make it easy to meet other travellers.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse other hotels in Wroclaw

If you have time, consider spending more time exploring Poland, including heading to the capital of Warsaw, onto the charming town of Poznan or even to the historic Baltic port town of Gdansk.

If you have lots of time to play around with, you can always combine this itinerary with the extended stops in Poland and then onto the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Tallinn, Estonia

Czechia-Poland Itinerary

If you’re looking to dig deep into a couple of destinations during your 2 weeks in Central Europe, consider spending time in both the Czech Republic and Poland. These countries have quite a bit to offer visitors and so many tourists don’t venture beyond the most popular cities.

Begin this itinerary in Prague, the Czech capital. Spend your first couple of days exploring the city and then maybe another day on a day trip to one of the many places surrounding the capital.

From Prague, head south and plan to spend then night in gorgeous Cesky Krumlov. There is a lot to love about this town and it’s delightful to wander around in the evenings, after the day trip crowds have dispersed.

Days 5-6: Olomouc

From Prague, hop on a train or bus to one of our favourite cities in the region, Olomouc! This small Czech city is absolutely beautiful and it has yet to be “discovered” by mass tour groups, so you can really enjoy all of its traditional charms.

Olomouc has a large student population that gives it a young and vibrant energy and a lovely old town that is sure to take your heart. There are lots of things to see and do in Olomouc and make sure you take the time to really enjoy the laid-back vibes of this unique and beautiful city.

Beautiful streets in Olomouc

Where to Stay in Olomouc

Miss Sophie’s Hotel   – An excellent boutique hotel in a renovated house that offers a range of private rooms suitable for couples and families. There is the option to include breakfast in your daily rate and the staff can help organise your time in Olomouc.

Long Story Short – A funky hostel that is spread across two floors in a renovated apartment in central Olomouc. There’s a large common room and the staff have plenty of recommendations on things to do and day trips in the area.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse other hotels in Olomouc.

Days 7-10: Krakow

From Olomouc, it’s time to head to Krakow and enjoy a few days exploring this iconic city. Make sure to take in the main site, enjoy the vibrant nightlife and trendy culture, but also take the time to learn about its heartbreaking history.

Spend three full days in Krakow before heading onto…

Days 11-12: Wroclaw

End your itinerary in the charming city of Wroclaw and enjoy its more laid-back vibes and quirky personality.

Though we love Wroclaw and actually find it to be one of our favourite cities in Poland, you can also choose to end this itinerary in the Polish capital of Warsaw.

Gnome statue in Wroclaw

Days 13-14: Warsaw

End your 2 weeks in the Polish capital of Warsaw , a bustling metropolis with a lot of history and things to offer visitors. Despite being the largest city in Poland, visitors can easily explore the highlights within the confines of two days, so it makes for an excellent place to visit to round out your itinerary.

Spend one day exploring Warsaw’s old town (which was entirely reconstructed after being demolished during WWII) and seeing the Royal Castle. Of course, no visit to the city is complete without indulging in your body weight’s worth of pierogi!

For the rest of your time in Warsaw take in some of the city’s top museums (such as the Warsaw Uprising Museum) and lounge in Lazienki Royal Park.

If you have more time to devote to this itinerary, then you can easily spend more time and see more cities and towns in both the Czech Republic and in Poland. In Czechia, consider visiting some other cities like Brno or Ostrava or even heading into nature with some hiking in the beautiful Jeseniky Mountains.

In Poland, head onto charming Poznan and spend some time wandering through beautiful Wielkopolska National Park. If you’re interested in history and seaside charms, then consider venturing further north to explore the Baltic port city of Gdansk.

A sunset over the Jeseniky Mountains

Planning out the ideal trip to Central Europe can be an overwhelming experience with so many different routes available. While there are countless things to see and cities to visit, spending 2 weeks (or more!) in this region is never something you’re going to regret.

Hi, First let me thank you for the wonderful and of course very useful trip guides that you’ve been helping passionate travellers, with !! My wife and I (both in our mid sixties) are weighing two options for a fortnight’s trip in early January 2025 – 1) – PRAGUE – SALZBURG – VIENNA – BUDAPEST I have read your wonderfully detailed suggestions including visiting out and staying at OLOMOUC or KARLOVY VARY as well as CESKY KRUMLOV. Visting cities like GRAZ etc. With not too much of a restriction on time, we can plan so as to cover the most at a comfortably easy pace. The hurdle for us is TRANSPORTATION and daily commuting – We are most comfortable with a guide cum chauffeur who will take us along as our Man Friday of the trip. This is how we have covered Greece, Jordan, Central Asia, African countries etc. Renting a car on a self-drive would be something I would love to avoid. It would be a very big and relieving assistance if you could please suggest some service providers from whom we could avail this facility ?

Alternatively 2) HELSINKI (including Porvoo and Turku) – ROVANIEMI (including Ivalo) Here again we would like the same services of a Chauffeur driven car both for Helsinki and the Lapland region.

Sorry to bother you with such a lengthy post !

Regards Soumitra Choudhury India

Me and my wife are planning to visit central Europe for 10-14 days to cover the most in one trip. We are flexible to include new destinations. We must have Prague, Budapest and some beautiful cities in Poland. Can you please help us with a good itinerary, where to stay, for how long, mode of travel etc. We shall be travelling from Colombo, Sri Lanka and need to keep Greece in the itinerary.

Very helpful information. We are working on a two week winter trip that (we think) needs to begin and end in Vienna. Is there a circular path that you would recommend that accomplishes that? Krakow seems too far, and we’ve been to Salzburg, although we could revisit. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Margaret, thanks for your comment! A great Central European route that would work for two weeks could be Vienna-Graz-Maribor-Ljubljana-Vienna. Not too long of journey times between cities, they’re all absolutely lovely and you can easily get a lot out of them in a two-week period. Alternatively, you could head to Prague and travel a bit around the Czech Republic as well. Hope this helps!

Maggie and Michael. Wonderful to get your latest thoughts on Europe, especially with pictures. With more countries opening up it is certainly getting our travel mojo moving. Even here in Canada there is more talk of tourism. And those of us with 2 shots are very anxious to travel. Thanks again for the very motivational communication.

Happy to hear that you’re fully vaccinated and getting ready to travel again, David! Hope that you can hit the road and explore someplace new soon.

Hi Team, We are travelling to Eastern central Europe, July 2019 we have booked sail trip around Croatia, though we have 3 days before we sail, we could fly from Prague to Zadar, or do a 3 day tour from Prague to Zadar through Bled, Lubjiana, Zagreb then plitvic lake Zadar, but having trouble working out the options.

Hi Peter, I think 3 days isn’t enough to see all of Bled, Ljubiana and Zagreb! I’d suggest either picking one place to stop on the way or flying between Prague and Zadar and spending more time in the Czech Republic. Hope you have a great trip!

Hello Michael,

I am interested in your Poland Itinerary. You haven’t included Gdansk, is it worth visiting this place or is it better to discover Wroclaw instead? I am interested in Warsaw and Krakow of course. Is late April/early May a good time to visit Poland? Look forward to hearing from you Thank you,

Hi Peter, I haven’t been to Gdansk before, however, Wroclaw is my favourite city in Poland so I definitely recommend visiting there if you can! Weather can still be variable at that time of year but crowds will be a lot less than the summer months. Hope you have a great trip!

Gdansk is such a beautiful city, I would totally recommend to visit it. However, it is located in the very north of Poland which could become an inconvenience in terms of times and schedules

10 days itinerary for Central Europe – Budapest, Vienna, and more

Last Updated on March 18, 2024 by gregor

If you’re looking to travel to Central Europe, but don’t know where to start, this 10-day itinerary is perfect for you! Visit beautiful world-class cities like Prague, Vienna , and Budapest , and experience the best views and best places that the region has to offer.

10 days Central Europe itinerary

Day 1: arrive in prague and explore the city center on foot..

After landing at Prague airport and collecting your luggage, it’s time to start exploring this beautiful city! Consider renting a car. The best way to do this is on foot, so head into the city center and start taking in the sights. Some of the must-sees include the Old Town Square, the Charles Bridge, and the Astronomical Clock. Coffee & Cake – Viennese Café Houses

One of the best things to do in Vienna is to drink a cup of coffee and eat cake.

There are many  Viennese coffee houses  to choose from, making it difficult to decide which ones to visit (even if you have 4 days in Vienna and can go to multiple places).

I would, however, make sure to visit  Cafe Central (Herrengasse 14)  and K & K Hofzuckerbäkerei  Demel (Kohlmarkt 14) . It’s not just the amazing coffee and cakes but it’s the entire atmosphere that feels elegant, sophisticated, and inviting all at the same time.

For the Viennese cakes and pastries, I would advise the famous  Sacher Cake  at  Café Central  and the  Kaiserschmarrn (Austrian shredded pancake) at the Demel .

Did you know Budapest is actually a blend of two cities – Buda (hilly side) and Pest (flat side)?

Buda and Pest were two separate cities until 1873 when they were united to form the city of Budapest. Although they are now one city, they still maintain their own distinct personalities. Buda is on the hilly side of the city and is home to many of the city’s historic landmarks. Pest is the flat side of the city and is the more modern and cosmopolitan side.

Day 10: Depart Central Europe.

After a final breakfast in Central Europe, it’s time to say goodbye and begin your journey home. If you’re departing from Prague, be sure to leave plenty of time to catch your flight. We hope you’ve enjoyed your time in this beautiful and historic part of the world!

How Long to Spend in Central Europe?

Assuming you would like to stick to the more central countries of Europe, we recommend spending at least 10 days in the region . This gives you enough time to explore the major cities and some of the smaller towns without feeling rushed. A suggested itinerary could include spending a few days in Prague to see the Old Town Square and other attractions, followed by stops in Vienna, Budapest, and Kraków. You could also add on other destinations such as Dresden or Munich if you have the time.

What cities should I visit in Central Europe?

If you’re planning a trip to Central Europe, there are a few cities you definitely won’t want to miss. Vienna , Austria is a great place to start – it’s full of culture and history, and there’s plenty to see and do. A day trip to Prague in the Czech Republic is also a must-see – be sure to check out the astronomical clock in the city center and the old town hall. And of course, no trip to Central Europe would be complete without a stop in Budapest, Hungary. The town hall is a must-see, and there are plenty of other sights and attractions to keep you busy.

Discovering Central Europe, a region that encompasses countries such as Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic, translates into getting lost in historically rich and often undefined cultures and traditions that express their distinct essences through incredible architectural styles, fairy tale landscapes and culinary surprises.

Looking for some good reasons to visit Austria?

Austria is known worldwide for its magnificent Alpine scenery and for the Habsburg baroque architectural treasures of Vienna and Salzburg. Visit Austria, homeland of the delicious Sachertorte and of many classical music composers (W.A. Mozart and J. Strauss Jr. just to name a few!), Austria will equally amaze you with the 1,440-room Schönbrunn Palace, the Viennese summer palace of the Habsburg monarchy.

Travel to Hungary and step into its fairytale world

When you travel to Hungary, you definitely step into a magnificent blend of old and new aspects of its history. Budapest, the imposing capital, split by the Danube River into traditional Buda and dynamic Pest, best exemplifies this quality. Here you will experience the most important and ancient thermal spring culture in Europe with an impressive 1,500 spas to choose from, while enjoying a glass of traditional Tocaj or a plate of spicy goulash.

Visit Prague and Czech Republic is a trip back in time

There are few places in the world like the Czech Republic: here you will find wonderful medieval towns, majestic castles, elegant palaces and the quaint architecture of traditional houses, all concentrated in such a small geographic area. Visit Prague, home to Franz Kafka and the site of hundreds of towers and spires. The capital city is literally a living architectural handbook, ranging from Gothic cathedrals to modern architectural cubist style treasures. Step back in time by walking the cobble stone streets of Prague’s Old Town or through the surprising Bohemia region and don’t forget to indulge in a locally brewed beer!

Austria, Hungary and Czech Republic luxury travel packages

Austria, Hungary and Czech Republic all belong to what is known as Mitteleurope, a German word and concept with a rather fluid and undefined meaning. In 1984 the Bohemian writer Milan Kundera gave us the best explanation for the concept of Mitteleurope in his book “The Tragedy of Central Europe”: “Central Europe is not a state. Central Europe is a culture or faith. Its border is imaginary and it is to be defined in every historical epoch again and again.” Experience and feel this multicultural region with our luxury travel packages, without missing an exciting and romantic cruise down the Danube River, the quiet and grand feature of these lands.

The Imperial Apartments at the Hofburg and Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna... Prague Castle in the Czech capital... and Krumlov Castle, dating back to 1240 in the Bohemian town of Český Krumlov offer poignant perspectives of historical days gone by.

Prague, czech republic, prague... the "city of a hundred spires"....

Although today it's the capital of the modern and independent Czech Republic, Prague still retains much of its medieval character in its soaring cathedrals, like the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of St. Vitus… the historic architectural riches of Old Town, including the Powder Tower and the Astronomical Clock… … the Hradcany (Castle) district, home to the millennium-old Prague Castle complex… the famous 16th-century Charles Bridge over the Vltava River… poignant Jewish heritage sites including a centuries-old Jewish cemetery… and winding, cobblestoned, lantern-lit streets lined with cafés and restaurants serving up schnitzels, dumplings, strüdels, goulashes, and beloved Czech brews…

Budapest, Hungary

Two cities now rolled into one, sprawling across the danube.

Formerly the independent cities of Buda and Pest on opposite banks of the Danube until the 19th century, Hungary's capital – Budapest – is filled with architecture known for its grandeur and style… from the hilly Buda section, home to Castle Hill, Fisherman's Bastion, and Matthias Church… to the flatter Pest side of the river, encompassing patriotic Heroes' Square; the fashionable shopping street, Váci Utca; Hungary's magnificent Neo-Classical Parliament building along the river; tree-lined Andrássy Avenue, home to some of Europe's most elegant 19th-century mansions; the beautiful Hungarian State Opera House; the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; the city's famous baths, and much more.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna waits for you....

Once the heart of the Habsburgs' Austro-Hungarian empire that ruled much of Europe for centuries, Vienna has so much to offer that it's hard to know where to start! There are its magnificent boulevards, like the Ringstrasse… great museums (more than 100), including the Kunsthistorisches (Museum of Fine Arts)… Imperial wonders like Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs' summer residence, and Hofburg Palace, another amazing Habsburg abode where the president of Austria lives today, and home to the Imperial Apartments of Empress Elisabeth ("Sisi")… medieval Vienna, including Neuer Markt, Ballgasse, Franziskanerplatz, Bäckerstrasse and Mozarthaus… the mosaic-roofed Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral)… the old Jewish Quarter and 19th-century Stadttempel, the city's only synagogue to survive WWII… and the historic Vienna Prater, one of the world's oldest amusement parks…

East Europe

Austria, czech & hungary, why visit east europe.

When people say they would like to visit Europe, little do they know that the continent holds so much to offer that it is impossible to cover in a limited time period!  A better way to cover this continent is to make multiple trips covering adjacent and well connected countries.

So why East Europe? Eastern Europe is a combination of countries like Austria, Czech, Slovak & Hungary , stands apart from its western counterparts , with a diverse culture and heritage and a unique history. Not to forget the unique cuisine beer and folk music. We are not even talking about Balkans here.

For an immersive experience a good 15 days would be our suggestion, but for the time starved people, the best way would be to go for experiences basis ones interest.

I landed at Vienna international airport in the night at around 11.45pm as a solo traveller & boarded and managed to find my way with an impressively advanced tram system for the commute around the city and safely getting around with an actual map. While Google maps conveniently found the best time to lag, the locals could not communicate fluently in English and given the fact that it was midnight , there were just a handful of people out on the road.

Not only they have an impressive public transport system, the people are friendly and are always happy to help.  .

My next stop was Hallstatt, followed by Salzburg, Prague and then Budapest.

After having enough of the cityscape view and activities, a trip to the upcountry hamlet like Hallstatt was just what I needed. If Vienna is about the palaces, night life and museums, Hallstatt in Austria would be a fairy tale land. Almost looks like a postcard image. The lakes and mountains surrounding the town make it a great getaway from the city life.

From Salzburg, I took a train to Prague, the capital of Czech Republic, a country that’s known for its ornate castles, native beers and long history.

Did you know that Czech Republic has the highest per capita beer consumption in the world? The people of Czech are passionate about their brewing ever since the 12th century. By the 13th century, Prague had one of the first breweries in the world called ‘Pilsner’ which is still running actively.

The last leg of my travel was to Hugngary, country which before the Holocaust, had a thriving, centuries-old Jewish community. It still houses ‘The Great Synagogue’. Hungary has a great history and boasts of a scenic landscape.  Turkish and Roman influence on Hungarian culture includes the popularity of mineral spas, including at thermal Lake Hévíz.

Best time to visit Eastern Europe is from  April to October. The other good part about his region is that unlike other parts of Europe, this region is a little lighter on the pocket.

Places to visit in austria, czech & hungary.

Hallstatt: It is said that mesmerised by its beauty, the Chinese have created a copy of the ancient salt mine village .  But only in the original will you discover this truly unique culture with such a history all in a breath-taking mountain setting.

Salzburg: This is the birthplace of Mozzart. Here’s a fun fact, the iconic movie ‘Sound of music’ was shot in the city of Salzburg and is a very popular tour

Prague: Prague is a romantic town with narrow alleys and lovely people and a rich history both ancient and new. Unlike Vienna, the streets are much narrower and the lane alleys are almost adjacent to the trams. The place has an unexplainable charm to it with it’s orange roof homes that look like the palace tops.

Budapest: Budapest is blessed with architectural landmarks like the majestic Budapest parliament and the 19th century chain bridge. The reason the chain bridge is so iconic is because it connects the two cities Buda and Pest which is split by the river Danube.

Bratislava: One of the thing which was very admiring at Bratislava was a mosque, synagogue and church next to each other, reflecting the understanding and respect for other religion.

Top 19 things to do in East Europe

  • Explore the Schonbrunn palace & gardens
  • Cruise on the Danube river
  • Unwind in a lake side apartment in Hallstatt
  • Experience something as unusual as taking a dip in ‘Samadhi-bad’, a bath house that allows you to float in complete darkness
  • Mozart museum is a must for music lovers
  • Explore Belvedere museum, war museum , Leopold museum & Sigmund Freud museum in Vienna.
  • Take a selfie with the Maria Theresa (empress) monument
  • Go on a ‘microbrewery tour’ & explore many breweries and see the upcountry caves while washing down different types of freshly brewed beer!
  • Explore the country side of Hungary. Visit the palaces in Esztergom, the mountains and chateaus in Visegrád and fõ tér square and churches in Szentendre.
  • Don’t miss the Czech Beer festival in Prague if you are visiting in the month of May.
  • Enjoy the live music at Charles Bridge in Prague
  • Try sauerkraut, apple strudel and pastries in Prgaue
  • Visit the World War ll Concentration camp. In my opinion, it’s an entirely different experience that appeals to only certain sections as it involves more realistic, gruesome scenes from the past
  • Explore the Prague castle and don’t forget to take a selfie at the castle’s view point. The castle is symbolic of the deep history with its Renaissance and gothic influenced buildings.
  • Attend a live event near to the  astronomical clock tower at Prague
  • Experience the life of a salt miner on a short salt mine tour in Hallstatt
  • Relax in a Hungarian mineral spa
  • Treat your adrenaline rush at the Hallstatt skywalk
  • Take a ferry ride in an ancient wooden boat in Hallstatt

Dr Anita Balakrishna & P.Kumara Velu Beyonder Traveller - Austria,Czech & Hungary

Going beyonder !!!!! The name was something new and the travel packages was something unique for each destination! It was highlighted from the beginning that this tour makes sure the travel is enriched with lovely experiences of which ever destination we chose! ”More(+)” So they played a slide show of some of the already done tour itineraries. Some even had a day of learning to cook their local cuisines apart from soaking in to their life, culture. Strolling around the local streets, cafes and pubs, or a whole day in the beach with an option for the activities we chose to take, if we wish to, apart from a day of local city tour! This was something unique and we had never heard of or experienced before! They worked out the itinerary which was flexible as per our every need! And this time with my aged mother along with us and our children too, We remember each day of the trip, each hotel room. Each restaurant, every place we visited even now. We had the time to take it all in and absorb every memory. My children aged 14 and 8 had the best of their time. They shopped crazily. My mother was relaxed and had fun too with her swollen knees. On the whole, it was a beautiful experience, one which we had not experienced before, extremely comfortable for us, our kids as well as to our 70 year old mother. And so I remember the first slide show where I was introduced t “Going Beyonder” and its way of enriching our experience when we travel abroad! I am already making plans for my next travel in the year 2020 with going beyonder!!!! ”Less(-)”

Deepanshu Beyonder Traveller - Austria, Czech & Hungary

We would like to thank Beyonder team for our most amazing vacation in Austria recently. It was not a usual trip where you are rushed from one location to another. ”More(+)” It was a wonderfully planned vacation with enough time on our hands to explore Austria and do what we wanted to do the most. A special thanks to Anand who really took time to understand what kind of experience we wanted out of this vacation and gave us exactly that, which made this experience extraordinary for us. And the team is involved all the way through, right from the day you apply for Visa till the day you are back home. I can certainly say we will be planning many more trips with Beyonder. ”Less(-)”

I have the following itinerary in mind.

I would like to ask if you think it is good?

My interests are local cuisine, history, culture, sightseeing and exploring cities.

Day 1- Arrive in Prague

Day 2- Prague

Day 3- Prague

Day 4- Day trip to Cesky Krumlov.

Day 5- Leave Prague for Vienna

Day 6- Vienna

Day 7- Vienna

Day 8- Day trip to Bratislava .

Day 9. Leave Vienna for Salzburg

Day 10 – Salzburg

Day 11- Salzburg

Day 12- Take day trip to Hallstatt .

Day 13- Leave Vienna for Budapest

Day 14- Budapest

Day 15- Budapest

Also, I understand that some people say that Bratislava can be skipped as there is not a lot to do there. However, I have read that the fact that it is significantly different to Vienna makes it interesting to visit.

I do not mind travelling from Cesky Krumlov to Vienna and from Bratislava to Salzburg but after having researched, there does not appear to be any direct trains for these routes and I prefer to take train than bus.

' class=

2. There is a direct train from Bratislava to Salzburg , but it leaves very early in the morning (6:10). Additionally, there are numerous options with a change in Vienna (basically every hour).

Is the 6.10am train from Bratislava to Salzburg the only direct train?

What train company is it with?

Could you please send me a link to the train company that this train is with?

A better route:

It's jointly operated by ZSSK and OBB, you can buy from either of them (whoever's cheaper): zssk.sk or oebb.at.

Hi Luftmensch,

I was just wondering why you think the route you have suggested below is better?

Are there direct trains for each journey in the route?

So if I use the route you suggested, is the following itinerary below good?

Day 4- Leave Prague for Cesky Krumlov

Day 5- Leave Cesky Krumlov for Salzburg

Day 6- Salzburg

Day 7- Salzburg

Day 8- Day trip to Halstatt

Day 9. Leave Salzburg for Vienna

Day 10 – Vienna

Day 11- Vienna

Day 12- Leave Vienna for Bratislava

Day 13- Leave Bratislava for Budapest

"I was just wondering why you think the route you have suggested below is better?"

"Are there direct trains for each journey in the route?"

No, for Prague - Cesky Krumlov change in Ceske Budejovice.

For Cesky Krumlov - Salzburg change in Ceske Budejovice and Linz or take bus/taxi to Kaplice and board the train to Linz there or take a shuttle bus directly to Salzburg.

For Salzburg/Wien - Hallstatt change in Attnang-Puchheim or Linz or Stainach-Irdning.

"So if I use the route you suggested, is the following itinerary below good?"

Your revised itinerery looks much better(stay 1 night in/near Hallstatt and avoid backtracking to Salzburg), but the main problem is that you're trying to see too many places in the short time you have, so I'd skip a few towns to spend more at others.

this is a forum dedicated to austria and is not a forum about a central european tour and its timings etc..

so, for your austrian section , i would suggest you go from krumlov to bad ischl by train or by shuttle. you can then stay there for your few days, visiting salzburg and hallstatt from there. and then you can take the train from bad ischl to vienna

as for your other destinations, please post in their respective fora.

"this is a forum dedicated to austria and is not a forum about a central european tour and its timings etc.."

"as for your other destinations, please post in their respective fora."

The OP has already done that, but I don't think it's a good idea to break a trip planning like this into seperate countries. One has to see the full details to give the best advice.

there is no specific forum for central europe but really, it should not be expected that a person with vast knowledge of austria, would also be an expert on other countries, or how to plan a trip around these various countries

in this case too, i would disagree with you. the op is not trying to visit too many places on his visit, he is allocating adequate time for the places that he wants to see

Thanks everyone for all of your feedback, suggestions and advice.

I am now trying to decide the following and would like to ask for your suggestions and advice regarding this the following:

Should I stay in Vienna for 4 nights and 3 full days OR for 3 nights and 2 full days?

Should I stay in Salzburg for 3 nights and 2 full days OR for 2 nights and 1 full day?

Should I stay in Budapest for 4 nights and 3 full days or for 3 nights and 2 full days?

He will do the following: help you with your money exchange, give you essential information about Belgrade, help you with your check-in, explain to you the location of your accommodation and advise you how to reach the main sights, and give you an overview of current happenings in the city.

In case your flight is delayed, there is no reason to worry. We will monitor your flight, and our guide will meet you accordingly. There are no additional charges for flight delays. After a short ride of 20 minutes, you’ll be in the city’s center. Check-in at the hotel, and take the rest of the day to get more familiar with Belgrade, walk around or follow your guide’s recommendation for dinner.

Overnight: Belgrade

Breakfast. After breakfast, we’ll start with our Belgrade sightseeing tour. Today we will show you almost all the most important sights in the city.

We’ll start at the daunting Belgrade Fortress, dramatically perched above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. We’ll check the Victor Monument, Monument of Gratitude to France, Zindan Gate, The Chapel of Saint Petka, Clock Gate, and The Clock Tower.

Once we finish with the fortress, we will start our panoramic ride through New Belgrade – Belgrade’s largest municipality, with impressive modern architecture. Here, we will see some remarkable buildings such as the Ex-Central Committee of the Communist Party, Federal Executive Council, also known as the Palace of Federation, Genex Tower or Western Gate of Belgrade, Sava Center, Belgrade Arena, and many more.

After New Belgrade, we’ll reach Zemun, the northern area of Belgrade, which is characteristic of its Central European appearance, charming quarters, cobblestone streets, and fish restaurants on the Danube River banks. Its curvy cobblestone streets and small houses will give you the impression that Zemun is a melting pot of Mediterranean and Middle European cultures.

After Zemun, we’ll drive through Dedinje, Belgrade’s most luxurious residential area, before we reach the imposing Saint Sava Temple, one of the world’s largest Orthodox churches.

After the sightseeing tour, spend this afternoon on your own. Maybe check out Nikola Tesla’s Museum or the National Museum, or wander around the central streets.

In the evening, visit the Old Bohemian Quarter of Skadarlija, frequently compared to Montmartre in Paris, both in appearance and artistic atmosphere. It’s a perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with traditional Serbian cuisine and the famous Belgrade nightlife. (Optional = 30€ per person)

After breakfast, we’ll pack our things and head for Budapest.

On our way to the Hungarian capital, we will visit Novi Sad, the second-largest city in Serbia. Our first stop is the second-largest fortress on the Danube River – Petrovaradin Fortress, one of the most important strategic points in the perpetual war between the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires. We shall be introduced to the legends of underground passages before we continue to “Serbian Athens”, as the City of Novi Sad is known.

As we stroll among great cultural institutions and historic buildings, we shall visit the oldest part of Novi Sad, the Zmaj Jovina pedestrian zone. Here, we shall be introduced to the rich history of Novi Sad as we see the monument to Svetozar Miletic, the famous Novi Sad Cathedral, the Episcopal Church… After sightseeing, enjoy some free time to discover Novi Sad independently, maybe have a drink on Danube banks, or grab a bite.

After we enjoyed Novi Sad, we’ll proceed towards “Pearl of the Danube”, as Budapest is often called. After around 3 hours of driving, we will arrive. Check in at the hotel, and take the rest of the day to get more familiar with Budapest, walk around, or follow your guide’s recommendation for dinner.

Overnight: B udapest

After breakfast, we will start with our comprehensive city tour of Budapest, starting with the view from Gellert Hill.

Enjoy an unbeatable panorama of the city and the Danube River as your guide fills you in on the city’s two halves: Buda, the ancient seat of the Hungarian Kings, and Pest, the heart of the modern city. Start your explorations in Buda with a tour of the medieval castle and follow your guide around Trinity Square, Fisherman’s Bastion, and Matyas church. After snapping photos of the grand Buda Castle, which dates from the 13th century, cross the iconic Chain Bridge into Pest, stopping to admire the magnificent Hungarian Parliament Building on the waterfront. Browse the shops along lively Vaci Street, then take a peek inside the opulent St. Stephen’s Basilica, where the star attraction is, somewhat bizarrely, the right hand of its namesake King Stephen. Next, stroll down the elegant Andrassy Avenue, home to the lavish Hungarian State Opera House, and marvel over the monuments of Heroes Square. End the tour with a walk through the historic Great Market Hall with its over 100 market stalls and endless choices of local products.

Time this afternoon on your own. You can walk around the streets of Budapest and explore the city independently, sip coffee in style at the famous New York Palace, book a tour around the National Parliament Building, or maybe check why Budapest is also called “The city of spas” and relax in one of the famous ones.

In the evening, we strongly recommend that you book an optional cruise on Danube and see how Budapest looks amazing in the evening, with the most beautiful buildings having the best perspective from the water.

Today is the time to leave Hungary behind us and visit one more European capital – Bratislava. After only two hours of easy ride, we will enter this charming town and immediately start with our walking tour. We’ll check the most important sights, including the Bratislava Fortress, St Martin’s Cathedral, The National Theater, and the “UFO Bridge.” After the tour, take some free time to soak up the laid-back atmosphere of the Main Square and grab a coffee or lunch before we proceed to Vienna. Excluding Rome and the Vatican, Bratislava and Vienna are the two closest capitals in Europe, so in less than one hour, you’ll be at your hotel in Vienna. Check-in and enjoy your free evening. Walk along the Danube River, listen to a classical music concert, or check out one of Vienna’s famous rooftop bars.

Overnight: Vienna

It’s not easy to mention all the reasons why Vienna is one of Europe’s most desired destinations, but we’ll give it a shot. From world-class museums, stunning parks and gardens, imperial charm and impressive architecture to rich cultural heritage and famous cafes, Vienna has it all. During our city tour, we will show you the most important sights. We will walk through the Old Town and the Hofburg Palace, check out the National Opera House, the Albertina Museum, The Maria-Theresien Platz, Helden Platz, and, of course, the Stephansplatz with the symbol of Vienna – St. Stephen’s Cathedral. After the tour, you have a not-so-easy task in front of you: choose which one of the magnificent Vienna museums you will visit. Kunsthistorisches Museum, Albertina Palace, Belvedere, Sigmund Freud Museum, Sisi Museum, Leopold Museum, House of Music, and the list goes on… Whichever you choose, you’ll make a good decision. Free time.

Today, we will visit one of the most stunning palaces in all of Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and have an authentic experience of imperial heritage. This is the country’s most important architectural, cultural, and historic monument. During our self-guided Grand Tour (audio guides available), which lasts for around 60 minutes, we will walk through forty rooms, including the private apartments of Franc Joseph and Elisabeth, rooms used by Maria Theresa and Napoleon, and the room where Mozart performed to the court and guests. After the tour through the palace, enjoy some free time walking around the magnificent Palace Gardens or maybe visiting the Tiergarten Schonbrunn – the world’s oldest zoo. After this memorable experience, we’ll depart for Prague, where we will arrive late in the evening.

Overnight: Prague

Welcome to the “Golden City” or “The City of a Hundred Spires,” known for its stunning architecture, including Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance buildings. A morning sightseeing tour of Prague includes a visit to the Royal Castle District at Hradcany, the former residence of the Bohemian kings. Enjoy magnificent city views and Charles Bridge below, and visit St. Vitus Cathedral. Following your visit, view St. George’s Basilica, the oldest church in the Castle complex, and Prague’s best-preserved Romanesque basilica. We’ll cross the 14th-century Charles Bridge and explore the Old Town, with the Astronomical Clock and the Powder Tower. Enjoy your free afternoon and evening in Prague, try some delicious local food, and of course, visit one of the breweries Prague is so famous for.

Breakfast. Free time until your flight. Transfer to the airport. End of services. Have a safe flight! Of course, we’ll gladly assist you if you want to extend your European adventure and continue to Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Krakow or somewhere else.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today enjoy a  Panoramic walking tour of the city of Prague with an official English-speaking guide. We take a pleasant walk through the historic center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992, starting with the Municipal House , a majestic gem of Art Nouveau. We continue with the Gunpowder Tower and walk along Celetná Street until we reach the Old Town Square , an exhibition in itself of centuries of architecture, from gothic styles such as Our Lady of Tyn to the baroque of the Church of St. Nicholas . From there, we go to the foot of the famous Astronomical Clock to take in its beauty. We continue along Karlova Street before ending at the Charles Bridge , an emblematic site of the city.

In addition, immerse yourself in the Prague Christmas Fair , one of the most famous in Europe thanks to its markets decorated with charming colorful lights, cheerful carols and wooden huts. Here, you’ll find Christmas-themed culinary specialties, decorations and gifts to bring back home! In the Old Town Square (Staromestske namesti) we stop at the largest Christmas market in the city, located at the foot of the Church of Our Lady of Tyn, surrounding the monument of Jan Hus—with a massive Christmas tree on display. You will then make your way to another popular market in Wenceslas Square, equally as charming and eye-catching. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend as you see fit. Europe by car: Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary

We are no strangers to travelling. although we’re usually going for more exotic destinations such as spitsbergen, mongolia or laos . but there’s not always enough time nor money to travel across the world. that’s when we just get in the car and drive. first one of those eurotrips that we did together, as bloggers, was back in december. then we travelled from poland to estonia, latvia and lithuania. we really enjoyed the whole experience so we thought it was a good idea to drive around europe again. this time we only had 6 days so we went on a trip across czech republic, austria and hungary. that was just enough time to visit 3 different cities. and eat a lot..

I drive a car a lot, but mostly around Warsaw, doing deliveries for my catering company Magic Cake & Magic Bite (excuse the shameless promo;)). This was my first trip abroad where I was the one driving. I was both nervous and excitied. For the deliveries I use a bigger car, but seeing as it was just two of us going on this trip we decided with the oldie but a goodie – a Mini Cooper that I had for quite some years now. It turned out it was perfect for the two of us – there was enough space for all the crap we packed, the fuel consumption was not high and parking in the European cities was way easier.

Vignettes/road taxes

Since it was my first longer trip and the first one I was driving abroad, it was also my first time buying vignettes. What yoy need to know is that in every one of the three countries we visited the rules concerning road taxes are different. And so are the prices. In Czech republic the cheapest vignette you can get costs around 20 euro and it’s valid for 10 days. You need to fill it out, meaning write down your registration number in two places. Than you stick the bigger part of it to your windshield. In the bottom right corner to be exact (looking from the perspective of a driver). The vignette that you need in Hungary is not a sticker. It’s electronic so you just need to have a proof of purchase with you in case police want to check it. It costs aroun 20 euro as well and is also valid for 10 days. On the way it turned out we accidentally stumbled upon Slovakia 😉 There’s another, longer way. You can take another road and avoid Slovakia completely, but we decided to save time instead of money on this partucular trip. If you go through Slovakia you’ll need another vignette. It’s electronic as well and costs 10 euro. The last vignette we needed was the one for Austria. It costs around 15 euro. It’s a sticker and you need to stick it in the top center of your windshield, behind the rearview mirror.

Parking a car in the city

The most difficut part of travelling by car is always finding a parking spot in the city center. A cheap one, to be exact. Especially since on this trip our hostels where always in the very center of the city. We did a little research, asked around in the hostels or were just lucky. It was different for every city so here are our tips for finding the cheapest parking spot possible.

Brno was definitely the easiest one when it came to parking. It was also the only one where we were able to leave our car overnight completely for free. We stayed to nights in Mitte Hostel which is located in the Old Town where traffic is limited, therefore it’s impossible to park directly in front of the hostel. However the girl at reception was very helpful and told us that the best place to leave our car is Pellicova street. From there it’s a few minute-long walk to the hostel. The street is long so it all depends on where you manage to find a parking spot. There’s quite a few of them on this street. Just be careful and read the signs. Some of the spots are reserved on certain days between certain hours (for example next to the school).

Pellicova is also a great street for skateboarding 😉

When it comes to finding a parking spot, it was way more complicated in Budapest. We stayed in Adagio 2.0 hostel located on Andrassy street, which is one of the biggest streets in the city center. We didn’t have much luck there. First of all, half of the street was closed off to the the fact there was a film crew taking up a lot of space with their trailers. They were filming something on the street for several days. The other problem was on the neighboring street. The Hungarians celebrate the 1st of May as well (it’s Labour Day) so they had closed off the entire street for some Redbull Race. Bummer. Hopefully we managed to find a spot on one of the smaller streets in the Jewish District. From there we had about 600 meters to the hostel. We were able to leave the car there for the night, but in the morning we had to get up and pay at the parking meter. Then it turned out that there are different rules when it comes to parking in Budapest in different zones and districts. In the city center you are not allowed to park for more than 3 hours. Of course you can come back every three hours and pay again but it’s a) expensive and b) time consuming to keep coming back in the same spot, especially when you don’t have much time for sightseeing.

What’s the answer to this problem? We found out that the best option is to use one of the public underground car parks. There’s tons of them in the city center. We found one by accident on Hollo street in the Jewish District, but there was one on almost every second street. You can pay for the parking spot hourly or daily. The other option is cheaper. What’s important is to pay for the parking online, in advance. This way you can save a few euro. The prices online are about 5 euro lower (per day) than we paid on the spot.

Vienna was the only city where we didn’t stay in the very center in the city. We chose Ruthensteiner hostel which is still close to all the attractions, but it’s located in a more quiet, resident area. Parking here is tricky, but well organized by the hostel staff. You just need to ask at the reception. You can’t leave your car there just like that, as it’s all reserved for the residents who pay monthly fee for parking in the area. However the hostel staff have their own permit which you can lend for 5 euro a day. You’ll need 50 euro for the deposit as well which you’ll get back when you return the permit. Except for the permit you’ll receive a card for every day you want to leave your car on the street, with your registration number written on it. You have to leave all of that in a visible spot in the car so that the police can see it. The lady at the reception warned us to pay attention to the road signs, as many of the parking spots are reserved or you simply cannot use them. However we didn’t have any trouble find a free spot in a legal place right next to the hostel.

How much does a car trip cost?

Of course the obvious answer to this question is: it depends. But I hate when everyone writes that, so here’s how much we spent. Over the course of 6 days we travelled for almost 2 thousand kilometers. Most of them on the highway, which is missing only in Poland (shame!). You can do it without going on the main roads, then of course it’s cheaper. It all depends on how much time you have. We did ride in some weird little roads in Czech Republic when we went to a cute windmill in the middle of nowhere. We wanted to take some drone shots of the car for this blog post. Unfortunatelly our Google Maps got lost on the way back and we wasted a couple hours on crappy scary roads in the middle of the forest, hoping no animals decide to cross our path.

In conclusion our Mini Cooper did well. He did not use a lot of fuel, and we didn’t have to refuel too much. The average fuel consumption was 5l/100km. And here’s the deal: we’re no geniuses when it comes to maths. When we started our trip we had about 3/4 of a tank. And then from what Maria was able to calculate from receipts we only spent a little over 100 euro (I guess per person) on fuel on our way. If that’s the case, than we should do the ’round the world’ trip next.

We are definitely fans of such Eurotrips by car. It’s convinient, gives you lots of freedom and opportunities to fly a drone in the middle of nowhere 😉 We’re already planning a next trip. If you know of any good routes let us know in the comments! Be sure to check out our alternative city guides form all of the cities we visited on this trip. They’ll be posted on the blog in the coming weeks.

BEIJING, China (AP) — Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit France, Serbia and Hungary next week as Beijing appears to seek a larger role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine that has upended global political and economic security.

The visit by Xi, China’s president and head of the ruling Communist Party, is his first to Europe in five years and will “inject new momentum to the peaceful development of the world,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily briefing on Monday.

China claims neutrality in the Ukraine conflict, but Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin declared their governments had a “no limits friendship” before Moscow’s February 2022 attack on Ukraine. China has refused to call the Russian assault an invasion and has been accused of bolstering Russia’s financial and technological ability to continue producing weapons for use against Ukraine, which is awaiting tens of billions of dollars in military aid to counter Russia’s aggression.

The Foreign Ministry said Xi’s visits will begin April 5 and end April 10 but gave no further details.

The visits will be closely watched in Washington for any signs of diminishing support for key U.S. foreign policy goals.

French President Emmanuel Macron prompted concerns in Washington during a visit to China last year after saying that France wouldn’t blindly follow the U.S. in getting involved in crises that are not of its concern, an apparent reference to China’s demands for unification with Taiwan.

China has built strong relations with Serbia, including making a semi-secret delivery of an anti-aircraft missile system to the former Yugoslav republic in 2022.

The government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delayed Sweden’s entry into NATO for months. NATO expansion has been cited by China as provoking Putin to invade Ukraine.

Orbán, a right-wing populist who has forged close ties with Russia, has said that criticism of Hungary’s governance by Swedish politicians soured relations between the two countries and led to reluctance among lawmakers in his Fidesz party to support Sweden’s NATO entry.

The visits come after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Friday with Xi in Beijing and stressed the importance of “responsibly managing” the differences between the United States and China as the two sides butt heads over a number of contentious bilateral, regional and global issues .

Also on Friday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu hailed military cooperation with China during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun, in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana.

He said the cooperation is important as “new hotbeds of tension are emerging and old ones are exacerbating. In essence, this is the result of geopolitical adventures, selfish neo-colonial actions of the West.”
