Carolina up close

With historic buildings and picturesque landscaping, Carolina's campus is iconic, and some of the University's most beautiful spots are worth a closer look.

The Old Well.

Moving forward with boldness

More than 225 years ago, a radical idea took root in North Carolina: higher education, funded by the people, for the people. As we enter the third decade of this millennium, the challenges we face today are great, but, as we have demonstrated for more than two centuries, we are built to face great challenges.

Timeless traditions

Take a sip from the Old Well on your first day of classes to get good grades. Sign your name on the bricks inside the Bell Tower as a senior. Relax in the sun on Polk Place. Carolina is filled with traditions - some that date back for decades and others that are new - that students cherish today.

Always a great day to be a Tar Heel

“It’s a great day to be a Tar Heel” is a phrase you’ll often hear around Carolina, and for a good reason. Every day, Tar Heels create a positive impact on the world by improving their communities and inspiring change through their talents. They’re artists, scientists, humanitarians, researchers and innovators doing extraordinary things.

Clinical Laboratory Science Undergraduate Majors Open House (F, R) 3:30pm to 5:00pm

Clinical laboratory science (CLS), also called “medical laboratory science,” is the health profession that provides laboratory information and services needed for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The field of clinical laboratory science combines many sciences, including microbiology, hematology, chemistry, molecular biology and immunology. Carolina offers bachelor of science (BS) and master’s degrees in CLS.

Carolina students typically enter the BS CLS program after completing general education requirements and prerequisite courses. Some start college knowing that they want to be in the CLS program. Others discover the program after taking science courses and thinking about possible majors in science. No matter when students learn about the CLS program, they all have similar reasons for applying: • They like science courses – especially the hands-on aspects of laboratory courses • They want to use their talents and interest in science to help people • They want a marketable degree upon graduation • They want a degree that will give them many options for the future

If this describes you or your student, come see us on family weekend and take the first step toward an exciting future in clinical laboratory science. Faculty and current students are excited to meet prospective students and families and show you our student laboratory during this informal, drop-in open house.

4 Officers Killed In Charlotte Shooting Identified—Here’s What We Know

I n a Tuesday press conference, police gave updates on the four law enforcement officers who were injured and identified the four officers who were shot and killed Monday while attempting to serve a warrant in east Charlotte.

Two officers who were killed—Samuel Poloche and William Elliott—were with the North Carolina Department of Corrections, while Joshua Eyer was with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Thomas Weeks was a deputy U.S. Marshal, CMPD chief Johnny Jennings said Tuesday.

The other four officers who were injured during the shooting were all with CMPD: Officer Christopher Tolley is the only one still hospitalized and is in stable condition, and officers Michael Giglio, Jack Blowers and Justin Campbell were all released yesterday.

Investigators with the Charlotte police said they recovered two firearms—one AR-15 rifle and one handgun—and ammo from the crime scene, which was a residence where the officers were met with gunfire while trying to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Officials said there were two other people in the home with the suspect, and when police approached the body of the suspect—identified as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., who was killed in the shooting—they were met with more gunfire, though Jennings on Tuesday said he was no longer sure there was a second shooter, CBS News reported.

Twelve CMPD officers in total fired their weapons during the shootout, the department said Tuesday, and all 12 are on standard administrative leave while the investigation continues.

The two other people in the home, both unidentified women, are cooperating with the investigation and are not suspects or persons of interest as of Tuesday morning.

Crucial Quote

“Officers responded quickly and bravely yesterday,” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Tuesday. “Dangerous assignments are part of the job. They step up and do it anyway to protect our communities and families.”

What We Don’t Know

Who bought the guns that Hughes Jr. used in the shootout. Officers are looking for the purchaser and considering bringing federal charges against them, CNN reported , citing an internal law enforcement memo.

132. That’s how many mass shootings there have been so far in 2024, the latest of which was the Charlotte shooting. This year is tracking slightly below last year in terms of mass shootings—there were 174 mass shootings by April 29, 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive , which tracks gun violence incidents in the U.S.

Key Background

The officers injured and killed were part of 16 agencies that made up the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, which was serving warrants Monday, officials said. President Joe Biden responded to the shooting Monday night, saying the officers were “heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice,” and that more should be done to protect them. Biden then said police need to be funded“so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe,” and called on Congress to “ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines” and pass other gun safety measures including “universal background checks and a national red flag law.”

  • Reid was one of just five players to post a sub 1.00 ERA last season.
  • Reid was the first Seminole since Sarah Hamilton in 2009 to finish with a sub 1.00 ERA.
  • True freshman pitcher and outfielder Ashtyn Danley came to Tallahassee as one of the top recruits in the country and has begun to find her footing as a Seminole.
  • Danley has made a team-high 16 starts for the Seminoles this season and holds a 13-3 record.
  • In her last 13 appearances, Danley has allowed nine earned runs while striking out 44 in 52 innings.

  • In 2024, Kerr is hitting .336 with 30 RBI in 39 games. Kerr missed seven games this season due to injury.
  • Against Pitt, Kerr hit three home runs in three games for the Noles.
  • As one of the top recruits in the country coming out of high school, Kerr struggled in her first two seasons as a Seminole as she dealt with the implications of COVID and was recovering from a knee injury that she suffered her freshman season.
  • The tide turned for Kerr in 2023, and it all started with a home run in a primetime ESPN slot against Alabama at the 2023 Clearwater Invitational. Kerr came into the game starting in just three out of the Seminoles nine games and was 2-for-10 at the plate.
  • Kerr led the team with a .356 batting average while adding eight home runs and 40 RBI in 2023.
  • Kerr earned First Team All-ACC honors for the first time in her career and was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team.
  • Fans have known the name Amaya Ross for awhile but mainly for her insane speed on the base paths. Now, Ross has found herself in the FSU lineup for more than just her speed.
  • Ross has started all 47 games this season after making just 18 starts the past two seasons.
  • Ross has already surpassed her hit, RBI and home run numbers this season from the last two seasons combined.
  • Ross had one of the best weeks of her career at the Dugout Club Classic.
  • In six games, Ross recorded 10 hits in 15 at-bats (.667) with six RBI and three triples.

North Carolina medical marijuana sales begin at Cherokee store

  • Copy Link copied

CHEROKEE, N.C. (AP) — Medical marijuana can now be legally purchased in North Carolina with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians opening its long-planned dispensary this weekend on tribal land.

Hundreds of people, many with approved medical patient cards to purchase items, celebrated the historic opening of the Great Smoky Cannabis Co. on Saturday within the Eastern Band land known as the Qualla Boundary, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported. Saturday was April 20, which is also known as “420 Day,” or an annual day for the celebration of marijuana.

The ceremony marks the latest liberalization of marijuana rules by the tribe, which in 2021 decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana within its 89 square miles (231 square kilometers) of land in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The tribe also formed a medical marijuana system that included a tribe-created business to grow cannabis and sell it, reaping financial rewards for the tribal members and assisting those with medical conditions.

“This project will change the trajectory of their lives forever,” Forrest Parker, general manager for Qualla Enterprises, the tribal company that manages the dispensary, said during the opening ceremony. “It will be a conduit to generations of social, economic and spiritual growth, unlike anything that’s ever been witnessed.”

The Eastern Band, with about 14,000 members, can pass rules permitting cannabis as a sovereign nation and federally recognized tribe. Marijuana use remains illegal in the rest of North Carolina. Still, Republican U.S. Sens. Thom Tillis and Ted Budd have raised concerns with federal and state law enforcement about whether drug laws will continue to be carried out in light of the dispensary. A statewide medical marijuana bill has been considered in recent years by the North Carolina General Assembly.

Adults at least 21 years of age with a tribe medical cannabis patient card or an out-of-state approved medical marijuana card can purchase items at Great Smoky Cannabis Co.

The scope of marijuana sales could become much greater. A majority of Eastern Band voters backed in a referendum last September the adult, recreational use of marijuana on tribal land. The question also asked whether voters supported the tribal council to develop legislation to regulate such a market.

The Charlotte Observer reported that an adult use ordinance could be finalized in June, citing council member Boyd Owle.

“Let’s get it right before we put it out there. But we’re on the right track,” Owle said after a council work session on the ordinance earlier this month.

The dispensary could generate over $200 million in gross sales revenues in its first year if limited to medical patients, compared with $385 million if the product is available to all adult users, according to figures from Qualla Enterprises released before last year’s adult-use referendum.

Saturday’s ceremony featured tribal translator Myrtle Driver Johnson purchasing the first medical marijuana in a transaction made in English and Cherokee. She said that she had named and translated the different strains of cannabis into Cherokee.

LIV Golf: Kevin Na goes full NSFW, shows why he doesn’t belong on PGA Tour

LIV Golf provides more of a laid back atmosphere for fans and golfers, but Kevin Na took that too far in Adelaide.

LIV Adelaide: Day 3, Kevin Na

LIV Golf , the Saudi-backed rival league to the PGA Tour, has trumpeted their laid back approach to golf. Whether that is the music playing in the background, the fans chanting as golfers hit their shot, or the players themselves acting a little more relaxed.

This weekend, LIV Golf hosted its most successful event, LIV Adelaide in Australia .

CEO Greg Norman declared victory after a record-setting week. Television ratings were up and there were attendance records set during the three days for LIV Golf.

But just because the tournament was an overall success, that does not mean there were not still hiccups.

A fan chucked a water bottle onto the course and hit a caddie in the head, sending him to the ground.

Then, there is the matter of Kevin Na, who finished T34 in a 54-man field.

Video surfaced of Na acting like a child Sunday, cursing like a trucker after failing to get out of the woods.

LIV Golf star Kevin Na loses his sh!t in Adelaide “F—king Bullsh-t!!!” (Via: milz_ting/TT | @ziregolf ) pic.twitter.com/vJ0S0Io6Ok — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) April 29, 2024

The video opens with Na standing, clearly frustrated as his ball lie in a patron sand path left of the fairway.

His caddie asks fans to move, as they are blocking the pathway for Na’s attempted shot.

He then completely chunks his shot, as it moved forward maybe 20 feet.

“F***ing bullsh**,” Na can be heard yelling aloud. He then punches his bag on his caddie’s shoulder as he mumbles more curse words.

Things did not get any better.

Na’s next shot strikes a tree and squirts out to the right. At this point, frustration boils over and the 40-year-old shows no care in the world.

He just walks to his ball and whacks it into the fairway, dropping more F-bombs along the way.

It was unbelievably childish behavior from a former 5-time PGA Tour winner . But this would be completely unacceptable on the big boy circuit.

You can get away with it in LIV Golf though. He obviously has zero concerns about how he is acting. Why would he? He already got his bag joining the Saudi-funded golf league.

Even I can acknowledge that there are certain elements of LIV that are good for the game, and in particular, for the fans. But creating an environment where a professional feels emboldened enough to act like that is not one of them.
