All aboard the underground train: Panning for gold at Vancouver’s Britannia Mine Museum

Guided tours and multi-sensory attractions transport visitors back in time at what was once the largest copper mine in the British Empire

By Kathryn Anderson & Roadtrippers

After an incredibly scenic 45-minute drive north of Vancouver, the Britannia Mine Museum is impossible to miss. Located just off of British Columbia’s Sea-to-Sky Highway on Squamish First Nations land, the massive white structure juts out from the side of the mountain and commands attention.

The Britannia Mine was a functioning mine from 1904 until 1974. Ore was first discovered here in 1888 by Alexander Forbes, who happened upon a patch of mineralized rock while out hunting. At one point, more than 60,000 people lived nearby and worked in what was once the largest copper mine in the former British Empire. Over seven decades, workers extracted more than 50 million tons of ore that produced copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, silver, and gold. Today—despite floods, fires, and rock slides—a statue of a man opening the mountain to find copper memorializes the great fortunes that the mine provided for the town of Britannia.

In 2010, the mine underwent a massive renovation, opening as the Britannia Mine Museum. Visitors can pan for gold and gemstones, ride an underground train into an early haulage tunnel, learn about the history of the mine, and experience a new multi-sensory, live-action attraction entitled BOOM!

“We’re here to challenge the idea that museum tours have to be dry or boring,” says museum educator Derek A. Jang. “It’s always a pleasure watching people’s faces when they head underground or see the BOOM! show. Even through their [face] masks, I can tell when we’ve blown away their expectations.”

Underground train

My tour begins inside of the large white structure named Mill 3. There’s a chill in the air and my first thought is that the raw, exposed walls and pipes would make a great backdrop for a horror movie or underground nightclub. I’m not far off: The mine has been used as a filming location for countless television shows and movies, including The X-Files and Supernatural .

After exiting the Mill, I venture into The Chatterbox Café to warm up with a cappuccino. The walls of the cafe are filled with photos of the long list of actors who have filmed projects at the mine, including Richard Gere, David Hasselhoff, Alicia Silverstone, and Ashley Judd.

The coffee warms me up just in time to head into another cool, dark, and damp environment. I place a hard hat on my head, preparing to be transported back to the early 1900s when miners would hop on a similar train car and head into the mine for a hard day’s work. As I step into the bright yellow car, I’m thankful that I’m not claustrophobic. We descend into an early haulage tunnel that appears to be closing in around us.

A bright yellow train coming through a mine tunnel

Marianna Hammerstrom, the museum’s historic interpreter and our train conductor, shouts over the roar of the train’s engine: “Arms and legs inside at all times!”

As the train enters the underground tunnels, Jang says, “A lot of our guides would say the best part of working here is operating the machinery. I wish I could go back in time and tell my 5-year-old self that I’ll be a train conductor when I grow up.”

Once inside a tunnel, we ride along for a few moments before hopping out to watch staff demonstrate how miners drilled for ore. I witness the evolution of mining equipment from a basic hammer and chisel to a large power drill that noisily chips away at the tunnel wall; thankfully earplugs are provided.

Miners worked by candlelight before switching to carbide lamps, and one of my favorite parts of the underground train ride comes when a staff member shuts off the modern electric lights and lights a small candle; the mine glows eerily.

We exit the tunnel and I have the honor of upholding the long-standing tradition of pulling a rope and sounding an alarm. While the mine was in operation, the sound signified that the miners were finished for the day and everyone had exited safely, bringing relief to everyone in town.

A bright yellow train driven by a woman in a red hard hat inside of an underground mine

Loud noises

Speaking of loud sounds, the newest attraction at the mine is BOOM!, which brings visitors back to the days when all 20 stories of the mine were bustling. During the video presentation, I’m able to experience what the mine looked and sounded like during its heyday. Sparks fly, lights flash, and I hear the deafening roar of the machines that were once ubiquitous in the town of Britannia.

Our tour concludes and we exit through the Beaty Lundin Visitor Centre. More than just a kitschy souvenir shop, the visitor center includes interactive displays, artifacts from the mine’s history, and exhibits such as the Mining Hall of Fame.

In the Gold Panning Pavilion, I gladly accept a blue pan and plunge it into a pool of warm water. I scoop sand and water into my pan and shake it, searching for gold. I repeat this several times but find only sand—it’s not my lucky day, but I have fun anyway.

While walk-ins are allowed at Britannia Mine Museum , it’s highly recommended to book your tickets in advance. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Permanent Exhibits

Terra lab exhibit.

Explore Britannia's journey of environmental remediation and the importance of sustainable practices in mining today.

When the mine was active, this building was one of the company’s assay labs - a space where scientists could test rock samples to determine their ingredients and concentration.

Britannia Mine’s successful search for valuable minerals allowed the company to thrive, but it also had a far-reaching impact on the surrounding environment. In the main portion of the lab, graphics, specimens and multimedia displays examine the chemical process known as acid rock drainage, and the ways modern remediation is restoring biodiversity to Britannia’s waters.

Video: Here's what it's like on the Underground Donut Tour of Vancouver

vancouver-underground-donut-tour-cartems

When it comes to Vancouver, there's "hole" lot to love when it comes to one of our favourite treats: donuts.

Now you can taste your way around town on a new Underground Donut Tour that will lead you on a curated eating journey to some beloved local donut shops. And before you go (dough)nuts about the spelling, we're going with "donut" here because that's how the tour is branded, and the spelling varies between the U.S. and Canadian standards from shop to shop.

The two-hour, four-stop guided walking tours launched Friday, August 12, and operate multiple times a day on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Where do you go on the Underground Donut Tour?

The Vancouver Underground Donut Tour begins at Breka, the city's popular local 24-hour bakery chain known for its fresh-baked donuts . Guests then make their way on foot through downtown, making a couple of key stops in between before wrapping up at Cartems, one of Vancouver's favourite modern donut shops.

Tour organizers have already made some tweaks to the tour stops since launch; they've swapped out a stop at Tim Hortons with a visit to one of the city's newest coffee shops that also happens to serve donuts from one of Vancouver's favourite old-school shops, Lee's Donuts from Granville Island.

To maximize the energy of your sugar rush and keep you moving between stops, the tour takes a more leisurely route, pausing to point out some highlights in local history and architecture, which is a fun bonus. The guides also know some background info about each shop: Did you know the founder of Cartems thought up the modern donut shop in a dream, down to the name? Or that some of the original German bakers from Breka's early years still have ties to the popular 24-hour bakery chain?

Undoubtedly, however, the best part of the tour is the donuts, and there are lots (and lots) of them to try. Odds are high you'll go home with some leftovers - unless you are a living legend who really does have a whole stomach free and ready to eat a staggering quantity of the iconic pastry. From cream-filled to classic cake donuts, there are tons of types of the treat to try while you're on the tour.  The Underground Donut Tour has been running for seven years in cities like Chicago, Portland, Boston, Seattle, London, Dublin and several more in the United States. The Vancouver tour marks the company's first foray into Canada - a country that really loves its donuts (or doughnuts, if you prefer that spelling).

"Vancouver has always been on our list of cities we wanted to open. It's truly one of the most beautiful cities in North America and when we saw the incredible selection and styles of donuts available, everything just clicked. We're so excited to open our first tour in Canada," said Jeff Woelker, founder of the Underground Donut Tour, in a media release.

Tickets are $40 for adults and $25 for kids 10 and under. Reserve your spot online via the Underground Donut Tour's website .

We checked out the tour recently, have a look at what you'll experience:

Unveiling Vancouver Washington’s Hidden Passages

Table of Contents

Have you ever wondered if there are secret underground tunnels and hidden passages beneath the charming city of Vancouver Washington? Well, get ready to embark on an exciting journey as we delve into the mysterious world beneath the surface. In this article, we will unveil the captivating tales and intriguing history of Vancouver’s hidden passages, revealing a whole new side of the city that you never knew existed. So grab your flashlight and put on your explorer’s hat, because it’s time to uncover the mysteries that lay beneath Vancouver’s streets.

Exploring the Underground: Unveiling Vancouver Washington’s Hidden Passages

Historical background.

In order to truly appreciate the hidden passages that lie beneath Vancouver, Washington, it is important to first understand the historical background of the area . Vancouver, located in the Pacific Northwest, has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in the 19th century. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, the area saw the arrival of European explorers in the 18th century, followed by the establishment of Fort Vancouver by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1824.

Vancouver’s Hidden Underground

While Vancouver’s underground may not boast the labyrinthine network of tunnels found in other cities, it is home to several hidden passages that offer a glimpse into the city’s past. These underground spaces are primarily concentrated in the historic downtown area, where a network of tunnels and basements were constructed beneath the city’s streets. These tunnels served various functions, including providing access to utilities, connecting buildings, and offering discreet pathways for certain activities.

Urban Legends and Myths

Over the years, Vancouver’s underground has given rise to a number of urban legends and myths. One popular tale is that of the “Shanghai Tunnels,” which supposedly connected local businesses to the Columbia River waterfront . According to this myth, unsuspecting individuals would be drugged or kidnapped through trapdoors in the businesses above and then sold into forced labor aboard ships waiting at the river. While there is little historical evidence to support these claims, the allure of such tales has added to the allure and mystery of Vancouver’s hidden passages.

Architectural Marvels

One of the fascinating aspects of Vancouver’s underground is the architectural marvels found within these hidden spaces. The tunnels and basements often feature unique brickwork, arches, and even remnants of early heating systems. These features provide insight into the craftsmanship and engineering of the time, showcasing the ingenuity of those who constructed these underground spaces.

Transportation Infrastructure

Vancouver’s hidden passages have also played a role in the city’s transportation infrastructure. During the early years of the city’s development, the tunnels were used to connect buildings and provide a convenient and efficient way to transport goods between businesses. Today, some of these tunnels are still in use for similar purposes, while others have been repurposed for different functions.

Role in Prohibition Era

During the Prohibition era in the United States, Vancouver’s hidden passages took on a new significance. As the sale and consumption of alcohol were prohibited, covert bars and speakeasies sprung up throughout the city. These hidden establishments, often connected by underground tunnels, allowed residents to indulge in a drink outside the watchful eye of law enforcement. Today, remnants of these establishments can still be found beneath certain buildings, serving as a reminder of this intriguing period in history.

Modern-day Uses

While the use of Vancouver’s hidden passages for illicit activities has diminished over time, they still serve a variety of modern-day purposes. Many of the tunnels have been incorporated into the city’s utility infrastructure, providing access to electrical and plumbing systems. In addition, some businesses have transformed sections of the underground into unique retail spaces, adding to the charm and character of Vancouver’s downtown area.

Tourism and Exploration

The allure of Vancouver’s hidden passages has not gone unnoticed by locals and visitors alike. As the city strives to preserve and showcase its historic assets, guided tours and exploration of the underground have become popular attractions. These tours offer an opportunity to delve into Vancouver’s rich past and gain insight into the daily lives of its early inhabitants. From exploring the architectural marvels to hearing tales of the Prohibition era , these tours provide a unique glimpse into the city’s history.

Preservation Efforts

Preserving the underground spaces of Vancouver has become a priority for the city in recent years. Recognizing their historical and cultural significance, efforts have been made to protect these hidden passages from demolition and deterioration. By working closely with property owners and community organizations, Vancouver aims to ensure that future generations can continue to appreciate and explore the underground wonders that lie beneath their feet.

Future Discoveries

As technology advances and more archaeological research is conducted, it is likely that new discoveries will be made in Vancouver’s underground. With advancements in imaging techniques and excavation methods, previously hidden areas may be uncovered, shedding further light on the city’s past. The possibilities for future exploration and study are endless, making Vancouver’s hidden passages an ongoing source of intrigue and discovery.

In conclusion, Vancouver’s hidden passages offer an intriguing glimpse into the city’s past. From their historical significance to their architectural marvels, these underground spaces have captivated the imagination of locals and visitors alike. While myths and legends surround these hidden passages, it is through exploration, preservation efforts, and future discoveries that the true story of Vancouver’s underground will continue to unfold. So, grab your flashlight and curiosity, and embark on an adventure to unveil the mysteries that lie beneath Vancouver, Washington.
