Breathtaking total solar eclipse wows skywatchers in Quebec

'hollywood could not have manufactured better weather,' says climatologist.

Quebec pauses to watch stunning solar eclipse

Social sharing.

Across southern Quebec, time seemed to stop Monday afternoon as everybody looked up at the sky.

The moon drifted between the sun and earth for a few moments, but how long you were in the dark depended on where you were positioned along the path of totality —  a corridor approximately 200 kilometres wide and 14,700 kilometres long across North America.

For example, most of Montreal fell within the path, but Laval did not. Meanwhile, Sherbrooke was near the path's centre.

That means those in Montreal saw the eclipse for roughly one minute, 25 seconds, while those in Sherbrooke were in the dark for three minutes, 23 seconds.

VIDEO | Total eclipse's 'diamond ring effect' glistens over Quebec

The eclipse darkened the skies of Montérégie, the Eastern Townships, Centre-du-Québec, the Beauce and the Magdalen Islands.

David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada, said the weather forecast in Quebec was the best in all of North America for viewing the event.

"Wall-to-wall sunshine from Montreal to Sherbrooke, Quebec City, even Gaspé … it's just truly incredible," he said.

Phillips described the weather as an anomaly, as there's only a 20 per cent chance of clear, sunny skies in April.

"Look at the miserable weather last week  — rain and snow and wind and people without power — and then later this week, more foul weather, but in between there is this window of just such favourable eclipse weather," he said.

"Hollywood could not have manufactured better weather than what you are going to see in [the] province."

Heavy traffic as eclipse watchers pour in

Police and Transports Québec officials warned that thousands of people will be converging on communities that lie in the eclipse's path of totality to get the best view.

The influx in travellers resulted in heavy congestion early Monday afternoon across multiple regions of the province, including in Montreal and Quebec City.

In Montreal, Berri-UQAM Metro station was packed by 2 p.m. with people trying to take the yellow line to Jean-Drapeau park. Meanwhile, provincial police shut down exit ramps to Sainte-Hélène island from the Jacques Cartier Bridge because the area was so saturated with motorists. Police encouraged people to take public transit instead.

Officials from Montreal's Espace pour la vie , which organized the public event, said 100,000 people attended. After the eclipse, with transit overwhelmed, the bridge was packed with pedestrians heading back to Montreal.

people gathered

"People have been coming in to Quebec from Ontario, from northeast USA for the last few days and over the next hours, but they're all going to leave at the same time," said Transports Québec spokesperson Louis-André Bertrand.

Bertrand said the Transport Ministry mobilized extra personnel and halted all highway roadwork in key areas.

Meanwhile, Quebec provincial police published a special video pleading with drivers to not pull over on the side of the road and not to wear eclipse glasses while driving.

Alec Cooper drove about an hour from Quebec City to Saint-Georges, Que., in the Beauce region Sunday night to get a front-row seat to the action.

Cooper, an astrophotographer, wasted no time setting up his telescope to capture what will be the third total solar eclipse he has seen.

Quebec boasts 'best weather in North America' for eclipse, says climatologist

"You will get hooked on eclipses when you see your first total," he said Monday afternoon ahead of the event.

While Cooper said he could have driven to Lac-Mégantic in the Eastern Townships, where the eclipse will last about 80 seconds longer than the one in Beauce, he said his spot is still "plenty of time to just have your mind blown."

There were several viewing parties during the eclipse.

Here are some of the best places to watch the eclipse in Quebec

A total eclipse of the sun happens about every 18 months, but it's rare to live within the path of totality.

Canadians will have to wait 20 years for the next total eclipse, and that will be mainly visible in the Northwest Territories and Alberta, according to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

In Quebec, it won't be visible again until 2106, the CSA says.

Sioux City father, daughter duo to soon complete tour of all 30 MLB stadiums

The pair will complete their stadium tour with stops in Toronto and New York this summer.

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - There’s nothing quite like a day at the ballpark with your family. And for one Sioux City family, they’re about to complete a “major league” milestone.

The journey for Mark and Leah Caputo began in 2017. The father and daughter duo have spent the last seven years traveling across the country to see a game at every active Major League Baseball stadium.

“We would go to Wrigley Field a lot and have a good time,” said Mark. “When she graduated from college and I was getting ready to retire, she proposed the idea and I said yeah. When a 35-year-old lady wants to spend time with her dad you don’t say no.”

Angels Stadium, Anaheim, CA

“Just to give us something to look forward to we started what we call our ‘baseball tours,’” said Leah. “We started trying to figure out what we could do to do some vacations and settled on that to see new cities and baseball was just the excuse to do that.”

And for Mark and Leah, it’s not enough to just say that they’ve been to every Major League ballpark. Whenever they go to a new stadium, they check it out from top to bottom, and they’ve even got their own ranking system for every stadium.

“There’s a nice little book that we created to commemorate all of our stadiums, and in there, it lists out what we have,” said Leah. “The five are: the neighborhood, is it indicative of the city that we’re in? The fanbase; does the stadium really fit in with the city, I think a great example is St. Louis, you can see the St. Louis Arch right from that stadium. Unique qualities: is there something unique and special about it? And then primarily for my benefit, the beer selection.”

Coors Field, Denver, CO.

This summer the two will complete their major league tour with stops in Toronto and New York. And they’ll cap it all off with a tour of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. And the end of their tour comes as a bitter-sweet ending.

“Walking into that last stadium I can’t tell you how that’ll feel. Is it gonna be excited? Sad? But we’ve always envisioned finishing in New York state to see Cooperstown as the final piece of this,” said Leah. “I have a feeling I won’t be as emotional for the stadium; I’ll probably be more emotional for the museum if I had to place a bet.”

Globe Life Park, Arlington, TX

“I’m kind of looking at it as a dread,” said Mark. “I really want to finish it and get all 30 done, but this has been a given, me and Leah spending a week or so together every summer. We each get a list of things that we want to do and sit there to make it work and I’m going to miss that.”

Mark and Leah said that while their tour will end this year, they’ll still catch plenty of games together; and they’re both looking forward to seeing the new stadium in Las Vegas once it opens in 2028.

Eclipse 2024 live: Watch the full NASA broadcast – latest

The eclipse is about to begin. Totality will arrive at Mexico’s west coast around 11.07am local time, moving east until it leaves Newfoundland, Canada, around 5.16pm there

By Leah Crane

8 April 2024

On 8 April , a total solar eclipse will sweep across Mexico, the US and Canada. This kind of eclipse only occurs when the sun and moon line up perfectly in the sky so the moon covers the entire disc of the sun, casting a shadow on Earth. The path that this shadow takes as it rushes across the ground at speeds in excess of 2400 kilometres per hour is called the path of totality, and during this eclipse it will pass from Mexico’s west coast, up across 13 US states and through Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland in Canada. At any given location, totality will last between about 90 seconds and nearly 4.5 minutes.

Solar Eclipse 2024

On 8 April a total solar eclipse will pass over Mexico, the US and Canada. Our special series is covering everything you need to know, from how and when to see it to some of the weirdest eclipse experiences in history.

During this time, the sky will be dark as twilight and temperatures will drop up to 10 degrees. Viewers will be able to remove their eclipse glasses – crucial during the partial phase of the eclipse – and look directly at the sun as it is covered by the moon. This coverage renders the sun’s outermost layer, the corona, visible. During other times, it is too dim to see in the glare of sunlight. Total solar eclipses like this one are valuable times for researchers studying the sun, and they have led to enormous scientific advances over the years.
