One of Tehran’s most gorgeous and lovely locations, Golestan Palace is a survivor of the Qajar dynasty. This palace is close to 15 Khordad, a sizable market.
This time, we want to give you access to a virtual tour of a global installation in the middle of Tehran . This structure is the famous palace of Golestan, which is regarded as part of Iran’s intangible cultural heritage.
In 1392, the Golestan Palace was added to the World Heritage List. This structure, mainly recognized as a palace from the Qajar kings period, was constructed during the Safavid era.
During the reign of Karim Khan Zand, modifications were made to it, and buildings were built; But the primary importance of Golestan Palace is related to the Qajar period.
Golestan Palace complex consists of different parts as follows:
- Shams Ol-Emareh mansion: The most noticeable structure within Golestan Palace is Shams Ol-Emareh Mansion, also known as Khurshid Mansion.
This mansion was constructed on five floors during the Naseri era and was once considered the tallest structure in Tehran.
- Marble Throne Mansion: The Qajar kings used to sit in this location for the welcoming ceremony and distribute public hello to various classes of people on special occasions. It is the oldest building in Golestan Palace.
- Private Palace: This palace consists of five halls: a museum room (greeting or coronation hall), an ivory hall, a mirror, dishes, and diamonds.
- Gallery Museum: This section is also known as the museum room, salam hall, or coronation hall. This building was built during the time of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar
- Museum of Anthropology: Museum of Anthropology or “Abayd Palace” was also built by order of Naser al-Din Shah to accommodate the gifts of “Sultan Abdul Hamid,” the Ottoman king.
- Photographic Museum: In this museum, a collection of photos from the Qajar period, along with the photographic equipment of that time, is on display.
In front of the 15 Khordad market is where you’ll find Golestan Palace. This palace is easily accessible by metro, and all that is required to get there is to get off at 15 Khordad station and walk a short distance. Isfahan virtual tour (free)
The coronavirus left no chance to travel and this makes life in quarantine even more boring? Well, not so sure. There is a very old expression in the Persian language, claiming that “Isfahan includes the half worlds beauty”. let’s drop into Isfahan virtual tour and discover half of the world.
Table of Contents
Naghshe Jahan Square
This gorgeous square has actually been the center of entertainment and gatherings of Shah Abbas I. Various rituals, celebrations, and performances were held during the reign of Shah Abbas I and his successors at the site. The surrounding monuments like the magnificent Ali Qapo Palace , the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque , and the Abbasi Grand Mosque, each of which is a magnificent Safavid-era architecture. Let’s take a tour of Naghshe Jahan Square .
Naghsh_E Jahan Square, Isfahan – Iran
Vank Cathedral
During the Safavid period and during the Ottoman conflict, Shah Abbas attacked the Armenian-populated city of Jolfa and caused a lot of damage. To compensate for the loss, he asked the Armenians living in Jolfa to migrate to Isfahan and build a neighborhood named after their origin city, Jolfa, with their architecture and cultural requirements. Vank Cathedral is a place of worship for Armenian Christians living in the Jolfa neighborhood, which is also influenced by Islamic architecture. Not so far to visit all these beauties, This cathedral is ornamented by various forms of art from which the most significant ones are the delicate blue and gilded paintings on the ceiling and central dome depicting the Biblical story of the tion of the world. Click on the Vank Cathedral and start the virtual tour.

Chehel Sotoun
Chehel Soton Palace and Garden is one of the examples of royal gardens leftover from the Safavid period in Isfahan, which is also known as Chehelston Palace or Chehel Soton Museum Garden. In fact, this garden is a small part of the vast Jahan Nama garden that Shah Abbas I created by building a pavilion in the core of the first Chehelsotun palace and was designed in such a way that it was possible to access it from other gardens. Siosepol Bridge
Siosepol or literally translated as “Thirty-three bridges” over the Zayandeh rud River in Isfahan, has named after its 33 spans. During the Safavid period, the Armenian sprinkler festival was held on July 4 of each year on this bridge, and people sprinkled water and rose extract on each other during the ceremony. In our days, youth gather together to play instruments and sing there and couples set the dates on this bridge.

Ali Qapu Palace
Just clicking on Ali Qapu palace takes you to the old entrance of the palace on the western side of the Naghsh_E Jahan square. Upon entering the complex, you will see symmetrical buildings on both sides. It is interesting to know that if you whisper in any of these spaces, your voice will be played in the symmetrical Part of the monument. Ali Qapu was built right after the transfer of the capital from Qazvin to Isfahan by Shah Abbas I, in the late tenth century AH, it was built as the reigning center of the Safavid sultans. Tracking the direction of the arrow each time takes you up the stairs and into some rooms. After passing through a few rooms (don’t forget to take a look at the beautiful designs of the stairs under your feet) you will reach the porch. which is a big one, on the third floor, overlooking the Square in a beautiful and also controlling way, suitable for a king, isn’t it?

Sheykh Lotfollah mosque
Right in front of the magnificent AliQapu Palace, is the astounding Mosque of Sheykh Lotfollah . Not identical to other mosques, this royal mosque has no courtyard porch or minaret and instead is decorated with the most unique Islamic motifs.
The well-known dome of the Sheykh Lotfollah mosque
The corridor leading from the entrance to the nave is relatively high compared to the usual corridors. This is to keep the worshiper away from the hustle and bustle of the main square of the city and to guide him to the main path of the Qibla. Got out of the hallway, across the pulpit, and reaching the main hall, just turn the mouse up because the most beautiful dome decorations are waiting for you. Virtual tour of iran's world heritage sites.
A plan to promote the virtual tour of Iran’s historical spots listed on UNESCO’s world heritage sites has been unveiled recently. Called “11,000-kilometer trip at home: visiting world heritage sites”, the plan is jointly designed by the Information and Communication Technologies Ministry and Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Ministry, the latter’s Public Relations Office reported. Officials say the plan, unveiled in Tehran on Wednesday, is the first of its kind implemented in the country. As explained, the virtual tour is aimed at partially offsetting the travel ban triggered by COVID-19 during the Norouz (Iranian New Year) holidays from March 20 to April 3. A small-scale pilot scheme was run during Norouz, which provided a virtual tour of several museums.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
Once again, my vanity had got the better of me. A pair of “slim fit” beige corduroys ordered from Target, it transpired, could not be fastened without the help of a mechanical winch.
The bigger surprise, however, came when I attempted to return the trousers and was promptly issued a refund along with the following message: “Feel free to keep it, recycle or donate it! If the item was damaged, please dispose of it safely. Thanks for your help!”
Intrigued, I turned to Google, and learnt this practice — dubbed “returnless refunds” by analysts — was being employed by some of America’s largest retailers, including Amazon and Walmart, as well as a host of smaller companies.
The business rationale behind the phenomenon is, at first glance, pretty solid. Online returns are an increasingly vexing problem for US retailers, who collectively lost $248bn from the practice last year, according to research from the National Retail Federation. Often the cost of shipping and processing a return is almost as large, if not larger, as the cost of the item itself. Occasionally, the product is damaged in transit and can’t be sold on. There’s an environmental cost too, from transportation and disposal.
But retailers — deluged by returns that have only increased since Covid precipitated an ecommerce boom — have kept quiet about the scheme. Target, for example, makes no mention of “returnless refunds” on its site.
The secrecy is by design, says Sender Shamiss, chief executive of goTRG, which manages returns for some of the biggest US e-retailers, as Amazon, BestBuy and others try “to figure out how to stop bleeding dollars from handling returns that were very, very low price point”.
It is selective, however. It turns out I am among those chosen by an increasingly sophisticated algorithm that weeds out serial returners and scammers from loyal customers merely unable to accurately measure their waistlines. Behind the policy is “a formula of everything you buy and the projected net profit that the retailer is going to make, or gross margin, on that particular customer”, Shamiss explains. “If you’re trusted, you’re going to get to keep your item basically 75 per cent of the time.”
Talking about the tactic would only encourage fraudsters to order and submit returns in the hope of being allowed to keep the items, analysts say.
But the “soft launch” of the scheme is indicative of a broader reluctance to address the broken economics of online retailing, says Christian Piller, co-founder of the logistics platform Pollen Returns. He sees a cultural malaise — US consumers “have been trained, partly because of Amazon . . . [to] just buy whatever we want”, knowing it can be sent back — and cites far lower return rates in countries such as Japan, which has 3 per cent returns against 30 per cent in the US.
The rush to ease so-called “return anxiety” has led to a revolution in the way consumers see clothes. So-called “bracketing” — ordering a size up and a size down before sending the ill-fitting items back — and “wardrobing”, where an item is returned after brief use, have become commonplace. The annual retail value of returned goods in the US is said to be approaching $1tn. Attempts to address this — by charging for returns or forcing customers to bring back products to a physical store — risk alienating shoppers.
E-commerce consultants talk up potential solutions such as virtual fitting rooms, in which consumers can supposedly try before they buy, and Google has deployed artificial intelligence to help fine-tune this process. My experiments with such technology, however, have not found the results realistic.
In the interim, returnless refunds have become an ever more tempting alternative for American companies. Last September, a goTRG survey of more than 500 US-based retailers found that almost 60 per cent were using “keep it” refunds to reduce waste and costs.
My own experience of the scheme ultimately exemplified its absurdity. As I went to donate the chinos to my local Salvation Army branch, I passed an enormous, half-empty Target. I would have been happy to drop them off there.

Learn a Few Persian Expressions in a Virtual Trip to Tehran Grand Bazaar
- November 14, 2023
Kimia Raghebi
- Updated at: November 20, 2023
They say traveling is living a new life, experiencing different occasions for a short amount of time, and learning new things you can add to your everyday life. These days many people speak English and this has made traveling much easier. However, learning a few essential words and expressions might come in handy. Especially if you are planning a trip to Iran, the ancient land of poetry and metaphors in which proverbs and expressions have gone to another level, and lines of poetry are used commonly by people. Learning Persian/Iranian expressions would also be so much fun! Let’s go on a virtual trip together here and learn a few of them.
At the Grand Bazaar
We are in an old bazaar in Tehran . The tour guide accompanying our group is talking about this old bazaar, taking us through its different sections. This is a very crowded place, people come and go, some pause in front of a shop, some stop and talk to the shop owners, and some buy stuff from them. Seeing people’s interactions is fascinating, especially here it feels a bit different.
The tour guide catches you as you are looking enthusiastically at a woman who is talking to a shop owner, and they are both smiling. The guide reaches you and says, “if you like, we can go and buy something over there, I will help you there.”
Shopping in Persian
That is a spice shop. All around the shops, there are piles and piles of different spices, the smell and colors are truly magnetizing. The tour guide says as you enter the shop,” you better start by greeting them, “hello” will be “salaam” in Persian. Go ahead, try it!” Encouraged, you step inside and say “Salaam!” Soon, the shop owner turns and responds with a smile “Salaam. Befarmaid!”
He has detected the accent for sure, but his smile is welcoming and encouraging. The tour guide translates,” befarmaid means ‘here you go”, but when it’s used as an expression like now, it means welcome.” What do I say now?” you ask, and he says, “You thank them, say merci”. You say so to the owner and as you look around, you ask the guide,” but merci is French!”
“Yes, it is! But it is used commonly in Iran. You can say ‘moteshakeram’ or ‘sepas’ also! I see you’re looking at turmeric here! Do you want some? Go ahead and ask the price. You have to say ‘bebakhshid, een chande?’ which literally means, excuse me, how much is this?”
Captivating Cultural Concepts
After practicing it a few times with him, you ask the shop owner. When he tells the price and is ready to give you the turmeric, the tour guide who seems to be enjoying this a lot says,” now there is a cultural concept here you would want to know! You can ask him for a cheaper price, and have a small talk over it! It literally means haggling over the price! Bazaars have been the heart of economy and commerce for so long in countries like Iran, and this concept which is known as ‘chooneh zadan’ is a common task. It means that you talk the price out with the owner and you two try to reach a price which is good for both of you! And as you are going to talk for a couple of minutes, one can see that your chin and mouth keeps moving, and this is where the expression comes from, as chooneh or chaaneh means chin, this is where the expression comes from!”
With the help of the tour guide, you start ‘chooneh zadan’ and surprisingly get the turmeric at a lower price, meanwhile, you try to keep in mind the small words here and there, like ‘bale’ and ‘na’ which are yes and no. At the end of this joyful process, you thank the shop owner again saying ‘sepas!’ He smiles and says ‘khahesh mikonam’, the guide translates as “you’re welcome, now you can say goodbye, it will be Khoda negahdar in Persian. It means may God protect you”.
Walking out of the shop into the crowded bazaar again, you ask the tour guide about another expression a woman said at the shop when she was supposed to thank the owner.
New Expressions
“Oh, she said ‘daste shoma dard nakone’, right? That means thank you as well. Although a word for word translation would be ‘may your hand never be tired’, it is common in our culture that we reply with a compliment or a kind and polite gesture with a compliment in return. On this occasion, we can demonstrate it as the shop owner hands the woman her package, and he uses his hands to work hard, so we wish him good luck!”
As you are enjoying this conversation, you ask him if there are other expressions commonly used that include a body part, like hand in the last one.
“Oh yeah! The eye is the organ that has many metaphorical expressions! For example, the polite way of saying okay is ‘chashm’, which literally means the eye. Sometimes the longer term is used which is ‘be ru-ye cheshm’ which means on my eye and is sometimes accompanied with a gesture, a hand will be put on one eye, it all shows respect. When such an expression is used and is accompanied with the gesture, it shows how important the thing which is being asked and the person who is asking it are to us. And when you say it to someone, they will most probably say ‘cheshmetun bi bala’. It means ‘may your eyes see no harm’.
Or when we invite people to our homes, we would say ‘Ghadamet ru-ye cheshm’, which means you step on my eye! Strange, isn’t it? But it implies how dear the guest is to us that we give our precious eye to them to step on! And when the guest arrives, the host welcoming them may say ‘cheshm entezaretun budam, ru cheshm-e man ja darid’, it means that I was waiting for you and you are so precious to me, you’re actually thanking them for accepting your invitation. This conversation can go on forever, we can continue it over lunch! Have you ever had lunch in a bazaar?”
Having delicious Persian food in an old bazaar seems like a brilliant idea, especially when you know you can use new words and expressions, and having interactions with local people.
