Staying In New Jersey to Visit New York City?

If you’re thinking about visiting New York City and staying in New Jersey to save money, the good news is it’s completely doable. In fact, it’s easier than you think. I know that some of my colleagues have written articles saying that you have to stay in Manhattan to get the true New York City experience. Sorry, but that’s complete nonsense.

Most people wanting to experience New York City have tight budgets and only so much money to spend on travel. Staying in New Jersey can not only save you money, you’re likely to find a bit of breathing room at the end of the day. After all, for most people, there’s only so much horn honking, helicopters, bottlenecked sidewalks, and bright lights you want surrounding you in a single day. Many of us, especially from the midwest or smaller cities, need a little break from the chaos.

Where I Stayed During My Visit

I recently spent four days exploring New York City and stayed across the Hudson in Jersey City , New Jersey. My home base for the visit was the newly renovated Sonesta Simply Suites Extended Stay Hotel . The property offered a spacious room with dining room table, kitchen, refrigerator, and a small living room with a fold out couch. I could have easily shared the room with another person or two – and in turn, split the cost to save even more money.

If you’re driving through the area, staying in New Jersey is a no-brainer as driving in New York City is worse than being waterboarded while simultaneously being stung with tasers. In Jersey City, I was able to easily navigate to the hotel and also securely park my car with ease.

How To Get From New Jersey To New York City

The obvious question is – how do you get to New York City if you’re staying in Jersey City?

There are two options and both are quite simple. You can take a ferry across the Hudson for about $7.00 a ride. You’ll be taken to a dock near the World Trade Center in less than 10 minutes. From there, you can hop on the subway, use a taxi or Uber, or even walk to your preferred destinations.

visit new york stay in new jersey

The other option is the subway from Exchange Place in Jersey City. It’s all mind boggling if it’s your first time riding the subway but it’s really not that difficult once you get the hang of it. The ride is $2.75 or you can buy an unlimited day pass for $10.50 if you plan to really go all over the place. In about five minutes you’ll go from the New Jersey side into lower Manhattan and you’re well on your way. Have any trouble along the way? I found that people (public transit workers and the general public) are mostly very friendly and willing to help if you think you’re lost.

When you arrive, you can take another subway car to wherever it is you want to go in New York City. Using Google Maps, I was able to easily navigate the subway as the app not only tells you which train to hop on, but what subway station is closest to you and the upcoming departure times. Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Wall Street, Broadway – all a breeze to get to.

During my visit, I was able to walk to the subway or ferry dock in Jersey City in about ten minutes. I enjoyed the walk each morning, looking over at the beautiful view of the New York skyline from across the river. Seeing it from this view at night was extra special.

stay in nj to visit nyc

If you’re wanting to experience New York City after dark, the subway runs all night while the ferry operates until about 10:30.

Another added bonus to staying in Jersey City – you can visit the Statue of Liberty from Liberty Park which is far less crowded than the dock you’d take if you stayed in New York City. You can park for free (with a bit of a walk) or pay less than $10.00 for a closer parking spot to the dock.

Don’t Forget Things To Do in New Jersey, Too!

Don’t forget that Jersey City and the surrounding area has lots of things to see and places to explore as well! I loved walking around Frank Sinatra’s hometown of Hoboken and posing for a photo with his statue along the water!

HOW TO VISIT NEW YORK CITY ON A BUDGET – MAKE JERSEY CITY, NJ YOUR BASE

Many potential visitors ask themselves if it is possible to visit New York City on a budget. The answer is, yes!  And you do not need to compromise much to achieve it. With accommodation being a substantial part of your travel expenses, choosing the right location is crucial. For that, let me introduce you to Jersey City, NJ.  This beautifully revitalized city, located just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, delivers not only the best possible views of the NYC skyline but also a wide range of lodging, and for less! It offers fast and inexpensive ways to reach Manhattan, so you will not miss a beat. Read on to learn why Jersey City should be your base for visiting New York.

How to visit New York City on a budget. View of the skyline form Jersey City.

I visited New York City many times and truly enjoyed each trip. Still, getting there from Pennsylvania was always a struggle. On a few occasions, the heavy traffic around the tunnels and bridges leading to Manhattan added hours to my trip. And then, of course, there was a money factor. Stying in the city could eat up my budget quickly.

Add to it the nerve-wracking driving in the city, and you can easily see why I was searching for other solutions. I discovered Jersey City when I realized that instead of paying big bucks to stay in NYC, I could use my Hyatt credit card anniversary and stay in Jersey City for free. Righ upon my arrival, I knew I made the right choice. Ever since then, I stayed loyal to this location.

Well developed Jersey City waterfront offers many beautiful areas to relax with the view of New York City.

Jersey City, NJ – Facts

Practically speaking, Jersey City is an extension of Manhattan. It provides the convenience of being minutes from Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and a quick commute to the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. In recent years, when businesses and residents of Manhattan started to migrate there in search of affordability, the city has transformed into a modern urban community.

Redevelopment of the waterfront created one of the largest centers of banking and finance in the United States and has led to the district and city being nicknamed Wall Street West.

How to visit New York on a budget – why to stay in Jersey City

Jersey city hotels are less expensive than in the big apple.

Lodging will be your most significant saving when staying in Jersey City versus in NYC. I have three hotel recommendations for you. All of them offer high-quality accommodation and a great location. You would have to pay much more for the same standard in NYC, and your room will be much smaller.

Hyatt Regency Jersey City on Hudson

Hyatt Regency is my longtime favorite. It is the most expensive option, but you will get a lot for your buck – exceptional location, the energy of New York City, and the tranquility of the waterfront. Every room at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City has a view of the Hudson River and New York City.

Vu Restaurant offers a wall of glass overlooking the Hudson and Manhattan’s skyline. NYC skyline PATH train next door will take you to NYC in minutes.

Hyatt Regency in Jersey City praticaly sits on the Hudson River. How to visit New York on a budget.

Hyatt House Jersey City

Hyatt House Jersey City offers home conveniences. How to visit New York on a budget.

Candlewood Suites Jersey City – Harborside

Candlewood Suites is another budget-friendly hotel but farther away from the water. It offers apartment-style suites with a walking distance to Newport PATH stations, making travel to NYC’s World Trade Center or 33rd street speedy and convenient. You can also choose to sail across the Hudson on the NY Waterway Ferry to Brookfield Place or Midtown.

Jersey City offers many lower budget hotels and apartments for rent. The price drops when you move farther away from the waterfront.

You will not find inexpensive accomodation at Time Square. How to visit New York on a budget.

Parking in Jersey City is not as costly as parking in New York City

Since space is limited in Manhattan, parking prices are very high. Some hotels charge as much $70 per day. If you are lucky and do your research, you can find better rates, but it will not be a designated hotel parking. Meanwhile, lots in Jersey City are significantly cheaper. Find your parking garage here .

You do not have to pay a bridge or a tunnel toll

If you are visiting New York and plan to drive, you will have to pay a bridge or tunnel tolls. Keep in mind, that many of the toll facilities in New York are turning to Cashless Tolling. You would not be able to pay tolls with cash at most of the toll roads, tunnels, or bridges.

One option would be to pay tolls later using Toll By Mail. But it can be more expensive. Obtaining an E-ZPass is your best choice.

A ferry ride from Jersey City to Manhattan is as scenic as a more expensive boat cruises

One of the must-do experiences in New York is to see its skyline from the water. You will find plenty of boat cruises that offer just that, but you can save money by taking a ferry ride from Jersey City. The views are equally fantastic, and the price is right.

The Vessel, NYC newest attraction can easily be reached by ferry from Jersey City.

Other pros of staying in Jersey City

Quick commute to manhattan.

The PATH is a 10-minute train commute to NYC, but the New York Waterway Ferry is even faster. Learn more details on how to get from Jersey City to Manhattan.

Find a rooftop bar in New York City to enjoy the views from within.

Avoiding driving in New York City

Even if you are used to driving in large cities, you need to know that the New York traffic is a class on its own. Forget about the rules, everyone is just forcing themselves forward. Sometimes the traffics is so heavy, it is not moving. I remember a situation when I could see my hotel right in front of me, but it took 40 minutes to get there.

Jersey City delivers stunning views of Manhattan’s skyline

New York City has a lot to offer from within, but its skyline can only be seen from the outside. From Jersey City side, the views will take your breath away.

You can't beat these views of Manhattan's skyline.

You can easily visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty directly from Jersey City

Liberty State Park is the only location in New Jersey with ferry service to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty . You do not need to go to NYC to take these excursions. Nearby parking is available for a fee.

Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty can be reached by short ferry ride from Jersey City.

Jersey City is an attraction on its own

The city offers diverse neighborhoods, rich history, excellent restaurants, and vibrant nightlife.

Jersey City delivers a break from the hustle and bustle of NYC

Yes, New York City is all about action, but at the end of the day, you may want a change of pace. Jersey City’s waterfront is perfect for that. You can sit there on one of many benches and enjoy the view or try one of many bars or restaurants.

Start your next day strolling along the Hudson River and watching NYC waking up while enjoying your solitude.

Great suggestions, Yvonne! There’s so much to do and see in NYC. Just to add to what you’ve mentioned, I love the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It houses over two million works of art, spanning a period of 5000 years. I typically take the VIP: Empty Met Tour, but that’s a little expensive. Those who are on a budget can visit when the museum is open for everyone in the morning.

Your Trip to New Jersey: The Complete Guide

visit new york stay in new jersey

New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the US (it ranks after Washington, D.C.) and truly offers something for everyone. Situated on the east coast, with New York City to the north and Philadelphia at the southern end, it’s a diverse state with a number of urban areas, small towns, plenty of rural regions with beautiful forests and scenic trails, and of course, the world-famous beaches that are located along the Atlantic Ocean. There’s plenty of historical sites, hiking spots in the mountains, and other outdoor activities, as well as great restaurants; wineries and breweries; live music venues, shopping malls, and more. Visit New Jersey and you’re sure to find your own favorite destination within this state.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: It’s best to visit New Jersey in the spring, summer and fall between April and November. The weather is mild during the spring and the colorful flowers are blooming everywhere; summer is always warm (and often hot and humid), but that’s definitely the best time for the beach. Autumn is exceptional with pleasant temperatures and beautiful fall colors on the trees.

Getting Around: New Jersey is diverse, and depending on where you travel, public transportation can be sparse or non-existent. Overall, the best way to see the state is by car, and it’s best to rent a car if you are planning to do any amount of driving outside of a specific urban area. If you are limiting yourself to one or two destinations (especially near major transportation hubs of Philadelphia or New York City), check out NJ Transit buses and trains.

Travel Tip: Generally speaking, North Jersey has many more trains, buses, and public transportation options than Southern New Jersey. If you are planning to spend any time in Philadelphia or New York City (or at the beaches), be sure to factor your specific transportation needs into your trip in advance, and figure out your specific destinations before traveling to the state.

Things to Do

There are many great activities and attractions to enjoy in New Jersey! With several larger metropolitan areas, the state also is home to many small towns, rural areas with farms and hiking, and beaches. You'll also discover a vibrant food scene around the state, great live music venues, shopping, and more.

Go to the beach: There are many lovely beach towns along the Jersey shore from the southernmost tip of Cape May to the northern beaches near Asbury Park . Most require “beach tags” that need to be purchased before you go on the beach, and each town’s prices vary . Keep in mind each beach has its own personality and distinctive vibe, so it’s best to do a bit of research before choosing which beach is best for you.

Spend time in the parks: New Jersey has stunning parks across the entire region with interesting and diverse landscapes. There are many state and local parks that offer hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and scenic points. One favorite is Palisades Interstate Park , an incredible destination.

Go wine tasting: New Jersey has more than 50 wineries sprinkled around the state. You can sip and savor at a number of spots that offer outdoor patios, special events, and live music throughout the year.

Grab a beer: If you’re a beer lover, you will feel at home in New Jersey. There are breweries, brew pubs, and beer-producing restaurants in every county around the state. In warmer weather, it’s fun to sit outdoors and enjoy a few fresh pints.

Explore other attractions and read full-length articles about other things to do in New Jersey and the best beaches .

What to Eat and Drink

New Jersey is home to a wide array of specialties, ranging from casual diners and long-time family-owned favorites to upscale establishments. If you wish to sample a few state favorites, try pork roll sandwiches; grab a hoagie or cheesesteak (if you are near Philadelphia / in the South Jersey region); and sit on a bench and enjoy a slice of boardwalk pizza while you’re at the Jersey shore. Or try the state's famous disco fries . If you like seafood, you’re in luck! New Jersey has many great seafood restaurants; be sure to order fresh clams and mussels harvested from the bay during the summer months.

There are wineries and breweries scattered across the state, and many of these are worth visiting. A few favorites include Eclipse Brewing , Zed's Beer, and Flying Fish Brewery for incredible beer, and Almathea Cellars Farm Winery and Cape May Winery and Vineyard for award-winning wines. Most of these places have lovely and spacious outdoor patios and often host special events during the warmer months.

Here are our recommendations for the best New Jersey breweries and the state's best wineries .

Where to Stay

New Jersey has plenty of hotels, motels, home rentals, and smaller inns around the entire state. Since it is such a diverse destination, the type of lodging is wholly dependent on where you would like to call home base. For example, if you wish to enjoy the beaches in Cape May, there are many lovely and historic bed and breakfasts and small inns. However, other shore points don’t have hotels at all, and you will need to rent a home or condo. In larger suburban areas, such as Cherry Hill, Marlton, and Parsippany, for instance, there are many national hotel chains available at all price points.

Getting There

You can reach New Jersey via a number of bridges, tunnels, highways, and airports. If you’re driving from the South (Pennsylvania or Delaware), you can cross a number of bridges, including the Delaware Memorial Bridge and the Ben Franklin Bridge. If you’re in Southern Delaware, you can take the Lewes-Cape May Ferry, which is especially fun in the summer.

If you’re driving from the North, you can reach New Jersey from the Lincoln and Holland tunnels from Manhattan, or several bridges including the George Washington Bridge.

New Jersey has two airports with commercial flights, Newark International Airport , which is a major New York City metropolitan hub with many daily international flights worldwide, and Atlantic City airport , which is much smaller and only services a few domestic locations. The Philadelphia International Airport , located just a few miles from Southern New Jersey, is used by many New Jersey residents regularly for both domestic and international flights.

There are many regular buses and trains that run through the state of New Jersey, and a number connects the state with Philadelphia and New York. If you need this type of transportation, check the information and schedules for New Jersey Transit, PATCO, Amtrak, and The New York Port Authority.

Money Saving Tips

  • Keep in mind that the Philadelphia area (and Southern New Jersey) is much less expensive than Northern New Jersey.
  • Many New Jersey restaurants are “BYOB” establishments, which means they don’t have a liquor license and can't serve alcohol. This means you can bring your own wine or beer to dinner, which can be a major savings!
  • Visit the state’s website for specials and free events throughout the year.

It is 1/5 mile from the Exchange Place station of the PATH train, 1/4 mile from the Pavonia Avenue PATH station (more convenient on weekends from midtown).

You get free parking, and the hotel is extremely pleasant, clean, and the staff is very attentive. The neighborhood is very safe. And it is usually not expensive.

Two even nicer, but somewhat more expensive and more convenient alternatives are the DoubleTree on Washington Blvd, "inches" from the Pavonia Avenue Station, and the Hyatt, "inches" from the Exchange Place Station.

Check the PATH map to see how you get there from Manhattan. Here are two versions:

http://www.panynj.gov/path/maps.html

http://www.getouthudson.com/articles/Travel/PATH-train-map.html

I have stayed at the Homewood Suites, and been in the lobbies of the other two. All three are excellent hotels. And Homewood Suites has FREE Parking!!!!!! The others might charge for parking.

In the Secaucus/Meadowlands area, most hotels offer free parking. NJ Transit runs buses that stop near (or right outside) many of the hotels. The buses will then take you through the Lincoln Tunnel to the Port Authority Bus Terminal (Midtown, 42nd St and 8th Ave) in NYC. Ride takes about 15 minutes when traffic is light, but can take a bit longer when traffic is bad. I think the current bus fare is about $3.95 each way.

For the Hoboken/Jersey City area, the hotels tend to be fancier than in the Secaucus area (Hyatt Regency, Westin, W, etc.), and you may be able to get a room with a nice view of NYC from across the Hudson River. You will have to pay to park a car , with some hotels charge as much as $25 per day for parking. You can travel to NYC via the PATH trains. Cost is $2 each way.

I prefer the Secaucus area. I especially like the Hyatt Place there. Free parking, free breakfast, large rooms (which you'd never get in NYC without paying a fortune), and the bus stops right outside.

If you stay in Jersey City, and take the NJ Turnpike extension towards the Holland Tunnel, the exit after you pass Exit 14C is Columbus Blvd, which goes right to all three hotels I mentioned that are near PATH station.

If you go further and get to that first traffic light, turn right onto the Shopping Mall ramp to Washington Blvd, then make a right at that light and get there.

visit new york stay in new jersey

I would always opt for a hotel with a 24 hour mass transit option - like the PATH. Not a hotel in Secaucus where you are reliant on shuttle buses to bus stops and buses with limited schedules/impacted by traffic to get into the city.

the PATH has occassional issues, but as my coworkers who commute by bus from NJ have daily issues. Even with bus lanes it can take over an hour to get into the city from Hoboken, which is literally the entrance to the Holland Tunnel. The woman in the next office commutes from Hoboken by bus and it is a daily saga.

http://suitcaseready.com

Very often you can find one of the 4* hotels in Jersey City on Hotwire at a great price if they don't mind prepaying. I think you know how to use

http://betterbidding.com

to help identify the hotels. The 4* with an "s" for suite is the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken and that's not as good an option since it's not near a PATH station despite being directly across from midtown Manhattan.

Your Way From New Jersey to New York

Image of author Steffen

A lot more tourists are searching for cheap alternatives to find a great hotel in New Jersey, which is so close to New York City. Only a stone’s throw over the Hudson River you’ll find New Jersey and of course, there are a lot of small, beautiful towns down on the Hudson River, where you can stay cheaper than in the city.

But before you book your hotel in New Jersey, you have to know how to get from there to Manhattan. We’ll explain that in this article about the NJ Transit System and furthermore you’ll get more detailed information about where to stay, when you decide to choose a hotel in New Jersey.

Table of Contents

The New Jersey Towns We Recommend

We highly recommend staying in the towns that are directly across from Manhattan and along the Hudson (you see these towns on the left side on the map). The towns are  West New York, Weehawken, Hoboken and Jersey City . Hoboken is a great place, especially for younger people. The area is known for its great restaurants, bars and the amazing view of Manhattan’s Skyline. People living in Hoboken mostly work in the city and profit off the cheaper (not so much cheaper, but cheaper) rents there. During the weekends you’ll have a lot of great opportunities to go out and meet great people. Another town we recommend is Jersey City which is right next to Hoboken. Jersey City is arguably the most popular out of all the places on here. You have the Hyatt right along the Hudson River and there are vintage stores everywhere. A lot of creatives are making their way to Jersey City. Weehawken and West New York are not so busy like Hoboken, but very beautiful and a great choice to stay as well.

What’s the Commute like to NYC from New Jersey?

It’s good to know that it is very easy to get to NYC from New Jersey. Remember that most people work in New York City and have to commute into Manhattan. Convenient connections make this possible. By staying in New Jersey, residents can save money on their monthly rent and get more value for their money. In the morning during rush hour the NJ Transit System provides amazing service. It feels like there are buses running every 5 minutes from 7 am to 9.30 am. Lincoln Tunnel (the connection under the Hudson between NJ and NY) opens a lane just for the NJ Transit buses, so that they don’t have to handle the crazy traffic during that time.

All in all there are 52 bus lines which provide service in Hudson County. A ride costs round about $4. Each bus has the same destination: Port Authority in Manhattan. It’s a huge bus terminal close to Times Square. There are signs to direct you to your destination! The commute takes about 15-30 minutes depending on traffic. In the afternoon expect it to be about 25-40 minutes.

Overview of All Bus Lines of Hudson County

Alternative – the path.

Hoboken and Jersey City has the advantage over the other towns here. The PATH is basically a subway system that takes people from New Jersey to certain major stops in NYC. From Hoboken you can take the PATH from the Hoboken terminal. Just two stops from there you’ll arrive in Manhattan. Also, from Jersey City, you can take the PATH from Exchange Place Station and get dropped off near One World Trade. However, just to give you a heads up, Exchange Place Station will be closed to the public on the weekends for up to two years. Hurricane Sandy did a lot of damage to the station and has to go through renovations. One the weekends, you can take the ferry which will drop you off in Lower Manhattan . The PATH is definitley the fastest way and a ride costs $2.75 which can be paid with the New York Metro Card. If there’s a lot of traffic at the Lincoln tunnel you should think about the PATH.

Tips & Tricks

To find out which bus line is right for you, you just have to check out the NJ Transit Trip-Planner . It is important to know that you can purchase your bus tickets at the bus in New Jersey, but you cannot do the same in New York. In Manhattan you have to buy your tickets at the ticket machine. If you have no ticket, when you enter the bus, you have to leave the bus immediately. The reason for that is not explained.

Port Authority can be confusing, but with the right information you will make it through! You always want to make sure that you find out what bus terminal you are leaving from. There are television screens that will tell you where to go based on your destination, but there are always people to ask as well who work for the bus company. Just follow the signs and ask for help from STAFF if needed. Do not listen to people that try and stop you. They’ll give you the wrong directions and then ask for a tip. Ignore them. You’re going to be surprised how big a bus terminal can be.

Attention: The last bus leaves Port Authority at 2am at night. The first bus starts around 6am in the morning.

And a final tip: In New Jersey every passenger thanks for the ride and wishes a great day, or good night. So if you don’t want to be spotted as a tourist make sure, that you do the same.

I wish you a great ride with New Jersey Transit

Central Park Central Park free

This part-park, part-museum, part-concert hall swallows central Manhattan, and many of the city's most notable attractions are situated next to it or within its limits ( the Guggenheim , the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History , to name a few). But travelers insist that you shouldn't just pass through Central Park on your way to another place. This 843-acre green space is a favorite of New Yorkers and tourists; you can come here to exercise, dine, go to the zoo and more.

Almost everyone has a positive impression of the park, but no one has quite the same experience or recommends that you do quite the same thing. There's an almost impossible amount of sights to see here (hidden treasures, indeed), including more than 20 playgrounds, 48 fountains, monuments or sculptures, and 30 bridges. Here's a shortlist:

National September 11 Memorial & Museum National September 11 Memorial & Museum

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum serves as the primary tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as the six lost in the 1993 bombing. The memorial's twin reflecting pools and human-made waterfalls rest as eerie footprints where the World Trade Center's twin towers once stood. The 1-acre pools are enclosed in bronze panels on which the names of every victim are inscribed. The museum spans across 110,000 square feet and relays the narrative of the attacks through a series of multimedia displays, real-time recordings, authentic artifacts and an interactive table.

Recent visitors cited the overall atmosphere of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum as sobering and moving. Many travelers say they were impressed with the site as a whole, noting its respectful and informational displays. Reviewers say you won't want to rush your time here, with some recommending that you budget three to four hours to see all of the exhibits.

New York City Tourist 101 dictates that you must swing by this landmark structure in midtown Manhattan. And despite the hefty admission fees, the crowds and the long lines, recent visitors insist that you won't be sorry. In fact, taking a trip to the top of the Empire State Building is either the perfect way to begin or end your Big Apple excursion – on a clear day you'll be able to the see the city's major highlights some 1,250 feet beneath you.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Metropolitan Museum of Art

U.S. News Insider Tip: Come for the art, stay for the rooftop cocktails. A seasonal rooftop garden bar offers views over Central Park, which is especially coveted at sunset. The roof garden stays open into the evening on Friday and Saturday. – Jessica Colley Clarke

No museum in the United States is as celebrated as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Spilling over with masterpieces from all over the world, including notable collections from ancient Egypt and classical antiquity, "the Met" is an art experience unlike any other, and like much in New York, it's impossible to see all the museum has to offer in one day (or even two days, for that matter).

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Statue of Liberty is at the top of many travelers’ must-see lists. A feat of 19th-century technical engineering and a beacon for immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, the statue can be admired from several different vantage points around Manhattan, including Battery Park and the High Line . But to truly appreciate its size and significance, you’ll want to visit the statue and Ellis Island while on your NYC vacation.

The only way to access the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is by using the official National Park Service ferry operator, Statue City Cruises. If you’re departing from the New York side, you’ll hop on a ferry at Battery Park in lower Manhattan. If you’re departing from the New Jersey side, you’ll depart from Liberty State Park in Jersey City. The ferry ride takes approximately 15 minutes.

Brooklyn Bridge Brooklyn Bridge free

One of many signature landmarks of New York City, the Brooklyn Bridge is also one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country and a National Historic Landmark. Its six lanes (and one pedestrian and bicycle walkway) span the East River, connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn. Walking across the bridge remains a tourist pastime.

Some visitors decide to skip the bridge in favor of other attractions, but if you're short on money, this truly is one of the best ways to experience the city and to get a unique view of either borough at no cost. Several reviewers warn that since there is no shade along the bridge, it can get quite hot in the summertime (though there are vendors selling bottles of water). Many also warned that it can get quite crowded, and advised visiting in the morning before 9 a.m. if you don't want to maneuver around crowds.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Visit early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid crowds. If you walk from north to south, add on a visit to The Standard Biergarten or the vibrant Chelsea Market for great people-watching, food and drink. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

Set on an abandoned rail track on Manhattan's West Side, this sprawling, nearly 1½-mile-long landscaped park stretches over three of the city's most lively neighborhoods: the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen. Standing 30 feet above street level, the High Line offers sweeping views of the Hudson River and Manhattan's cityscape. But the vista isn't the only reason visitors and Manhattanites flock to this manicured green space. Here, you'll find continually changing public art installations, a handful of food vendors and a sprawling picnic and sunbathing area (known as the 23rd Street Lawn).

The central gathering place of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park, an almost 10-acre green space known for its downtown buzz. Here, kids splash in the fountain, musicians perform to a crowd, artists sell sketches or photographs, and chess enthusiasts gather to challenge each other to a game. And if you like plays and musicals, this is where you should be: "The Great White Way" represents the heart and soul of American theater. Formerly known as Freedom Tower, One World Trade Center is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in lower Manhattan. This observatory sits atop the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the highest point in the city. You'll find it adjacent to the 9/11 Memorial . At more than 125,000 square feet, the three-level observatory is located on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors of this office skyscraper. Visitors reach the observatory by direct express elevators known as SkyPods. The trip upward includes a visual presentation showing how New York has changed over the decades, from open land to smaller buildings to skyscrapers. The trip takes less than a minute. Before you enter, be sure to snap a few shots of the exterior's ornate beaux-arts neoclassical architecture. Inside the celebrated main concourse, you're treated to glimmering marble floors, gold and nickel-plated chandeliers and a sky-themed ceiling. Other must-sees include the Information Booth clock, the Whispering Gallery and Grand Central Market, a European-style food market that sells produce, gourmet ingredients and treats. Food options range from the upscale (Cipriani Dolci and The Campbell Bar) to the legendary (the Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant) to the fast and easy (Shake Shack). As mentioned, there are also plenty of shopping options, though most travelers suggest you leave most of Grand Central's pricey merchandise in the store. Travelers call the train station "iconic" and say it's a beautiful space to walk through or to grab a meal and people-watch.

U.S. News Insider Tip: This Midtown park draws crowds for two seasonal events: summer movie nights under the stars and a holiday market complete with ice skating. For summer picnics or winter shopping sprees, Bryant Park delivers year-round. – Jessica Colley Clarke

Sprawling across nearly 10 acres, Bryant Park sits just south of Times Square – though it feels a world away. Though its lush green space has existed for more than 150 years, Bryant Park was a revitalization project of the 1990s that made it a sanctuary for locals and tourists alike. This is the preferred place for midtown Manhattan professionals to eat lunch, for fashionistas to strut during fashion week and for performers to showcase their talents during annual events like Broadway in Bryant Park and Piano in Bryant Park. Staten Island Ferry Staten Island Ferry free

Perhaps the most famous ferry service in the United States, the Staten Island Ferry runs daily between the Whitehall Ferry Terminal in lower Manhattan and St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. The city has been operating the ferry service since 1905 and transports some 70,000 passengers across New York Harbor every day. It’s one of the last remaining vestiges of an entire ferry system that served New York City residents before the construction of any bridges.

But the Staten Island Ferry is more than a transportation service; it’s an attraction, drawing tens of thousands of out-of-town visitors a year for a free ride across the harbor (that’s right, no charge; the service is provided by the City of New York). The 5-mile ride lasts about 25 minutes. Passengers must disembark and then reboard to make the return trip to Manhattan. Travelers remark about the views of the Statue of Liberty , Ellis Island, Manhattan skyscrapers and the bridges of lower Manhattan.

Museum of Modern Art Museum of Modern Art

You don't have to be an art lover to appreciate the Museum of Modern Art; this airy midtown gallery also doubles as a shrine of pop culture and 20th century history. Some of the most significant contemporary pieces hang on its walls, including Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," Warhol's "Campbell's Soup Cans," Van Gogh's "Starry Night," Dalí's "The Persistence of Memory," Monet's "Water Lilies," and the list goes on and on. In October 2019, the museum reopened after completing an expansion project that added more than 40,000 square feet of gallery space, as well as a performance studio that features live programming.

Recent travelers were impressed by the extensive art collection and loved being able to see the museum's famous paintings. The $30 entry fee for adults ($17 for students; $22 for seniors; free for kids 16 and younger) can be hard to stomach for some, but reviewers insist you won't regret the money spent. A few travelers express disappointment with the crowds (which are most common on rainy days), but suggest getting some fresh air at the museum's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden.

The Rose Center for Earth and Space is a particular favorite, but you should also plan on visiting the dinosaurs, the Dorothy and Lewis B. Brooklyn Botanic Garden Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Wander along Brooklyn's Washington Avenue, and you can't avoid stumbling upon this verdant 52-acre park. And if you arrive at the end of April, you can't miss the Cherry Esplanade ( Sakura Matsuri ) when rosy cherry blossoms burst into bloom. Another standout: the Shakespeare Garden, which contains more than 80 plants described in the playwright's works.

Thanks to the garden's extensive collection, which includes 13 gardens and five conservatories, there's plenty of scenery to soak up here. Plus, you can take advantage of year-round exhibits and events, such as children's gardening workshops and Lightscape, the annual wintertime lights display. After you've taken respite in Brooklyn's cherished green space, recent visitors suggest moseying over to two staples located down the street: Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Museum.

Travelers rave about the views of the lower Manhattan skyline, the New York Harbor and the bridge.

Among the city’s newest parks, Brooklyn Bridge Park was once an industrial district and home to a transportation terminal that served as an entry point for immigrants. Today, the park features rolling hills, promenades, playgrounds, basketball courts, sports fields, a roller skating rink, gardens, and more among six piers and the riverfront. The Guggenheim The Guggenheim

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, or simply, "The Guggenheim," is one of the most well-known art museums in the country, and it's just as renowned for its cutting-edge design as it is for its pieces. The coiled building (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) stands out on Fifth Avenue at 89th Street. Inside, the halls are chock full of works from the likes of Picasso, Cézanne, Degas, Manet and Van Gogh, among others.

Visitors loved the building's design and architecture, but offered more mixed reviews for the art on display. Some raved about the permanent collection and the special exhibitions, while others felt the cost of entrance tickets was overpriced for the amount of art displayed. Reviewers recommended the Museum of Modern Art over the Guggenheim if you're short on time.

Off-Broadway Shows Off-Broadway Shows

Off-Broadway may not have the glitter of the Great White Way , but these smaller theaters and their productions are often innovative and are no less engaging. Unlike Broadway, these theaters are not centered around Times Square , but scattered all over Manhattan and generally seat fewer people (between 100 to 499 audience members). Smaller venues provide a more intimate experience for plays, musicals and revues. Many of New York’s most famous productions found their start off-Broadway, such as “Hair,” “Rent” and “In the Heights.”

Tickets also are more affordable, generally between $20 and $75 per person. Look for innovative productions at places like the Public Theater, Cherry Lane Theatre or Playwrights Horizons. The Signature Theatre showcases revivals and new plays.

Some say that Times Square is like a five-block metaphor for New York City itself – it's exciting, colorful and always jumping. Others describe this area of midtown Manhattan as artless, overpriced and congested. Perhaps this commercial stretch from West 42nd to West 47th streets is a little of both, and though locals would advise you to avoid it, you should at least catch a glimpse of its neon lights. Most travelers recommend visiting the area after dark to see the marquee displays. Many add checking out Times Square before or after a Broadway show is the perfect time to fit it into your schedule. However, if you're not a fan of crowds, reviewers suggest you avoid this area altogether.

Times Square's biggest tourist draw is the annual New Year's Eve ball drop. Revelers crowd the area to see New York's famous Waterford crystal ball descend 77 feet from a pole on the One Times Square building. If you're feeling brave, take a trip to New York and Times Square at this time of year and watch the ball drop for free! Just plan on coming in the early morning and staying all day, and note that the area is super crowded, even by New York standards.

It's fitting that St. Patrick's Cathedral would be on the same street as stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels. That's because for many people, shopping is a religious experience, and here between 34th and 59th streets you'll find the holy grail.

Even if you're not planning to put your credit card to work at high-end stores, travelers say a stroll along Fifth Avenue is a must. It's one of the top places to shop in the city, according to local experts. Plus, during the winter holidays, the street is decked out in festive decor.

Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo

According to travelers, these 265 acres sheltering more than 10,000 animals should be near the top of every young family's itinerary in New York. And if you're an older visitor, the Bronx Zoo could be a great way to escape the nonstop activity in Manhattan. This zoo's claim to fame is that it's one of the largest metropolitan animal parks in the country. It's also one of the best zoos in the U.S . Originally opened at 1899, the zoo also houses several famous landmarks, including the Rainey Memorial Gates, the Rockefeller Fountain and the historic Zoo Center, which was constructed to look like a palace.

Among the zoo's popular exhibits is JungleWorld, which aims to recreate the jungles of Asia with animals like white-cheeked gibbons, gharials, tapirs, fruit bats and more. There's also the Wild Asia Monorail, a seasonal outdoor monorail that allows visitors to observe animals like rhinos, tigers and red pandas roaming freely in the outdoor habitat. Other star attractions include the Congo Gorilla Forest, the seasonal butterfly garden, Tiger Mountain and the Children's Zoo. Along with the animals, there are also several rides and experiences, such as a carousel and sea lion feedings.

Apollo Theater Apollo Theater

U.S. News Insider Tip: Go to BLVD Bistro on 116th St. before or after your visit to the Apollo. They serve breakfast all day and literally have the best grits and pancakes I have ever had in my life. It is also Black-owned! – Lawrence Phillips, founder and CEO of Green Book Global

One of the most famous music halls in the United States, "the Apollo" started as a burlesque theater in 1914. By the 1930s, it transformed into a concert hall that helped launch the career of several black musicians. A then-unknown Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson (with the Jackson 5) and Stevie Wonder all performed on the Apollo stage during an Amateur Night competition. If you're in Harlem on a Wednesday you can still go to Amateur Night, an experience some previous travelers highly recommend.

Metropolitan Opera House Metropolitan Opera House

Stroll through the courtyard of the Metropolitan Opera House even if you're not going inside for a performance. Every element of this opulent building – from the limestone architecture, to the lobby's glittering chandelier, to the acoustics in the concert hall – is gorgeous. Travelers call this opera house a feast for the eyes and ears. Tickets are notoriously expensive (as much as several hundred dollars for the best seats), but the sticker shock evaporates quickly if you're into performing arts. You can try to score a same-day ticket at a discounted rate, plus there are discounts for senior citizens.

The Metropolitan Opera House features spring performances by the American Ballet Theatre and fall and winter performances by the Met Opera Company. Showtimes and ticket prices vary by performance and seating, so check the Met Opera's website for additional details. You'll find the opera house at Lincoln Center Plaza on Manhattan's Upper West Side – take the 1 train to 66th Street.

Radio City Music Hall Radio City Music Hall

It's where Ella Fitzgerald pined for the man she loved, the Rolling Stones couldn't get no satisfaction and Lady Gaga had a "Bad Romance." Among performers, there's no New York concert venue that's quite like Radio City Music Hall. Not only is it the largest indoor theater in the world, its marquee spans a full city block. Opened in 1932, the theater is a New York City Landmark. Today, the theater welcomes musical performers like Ben Platt and Lil Nas X, as well as comedians like Chris Rock.

If you're in town any dates between November and January, consider attending the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which stars the Rockettes. According to recent visitors who attended a show, there's not a bad seat in the house. If you're not able to attend a performance, consider signing up for the hourlong Radio City Stage Door Tour. The guided tour includes stops at areas of the historic venue not typically seen by the public, such as Radio City’s secret apartment, The Roxy Suite. You'll also an enjoy an in-depth history lesson about the stage and its iconic art deco design. The tour concludes with a meet-and-greet with a Radio City Rockette. Tours are offered daily starting at 9:30 a.m.; tickets cost $42 per adult and $38 per kid 12 and younger.

The Battery The Battery free

Also known as The Battery, this 25-ace park sits at the very southern tip of Manhattan Island, and offers a green respite from the steel and concrete of lower Manhattan. The park, named after artillery batteries that protected the settlement in the 17th century, is popular with visitors because of its views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty .

The park is home to perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an urban farm and a unique carousel, known as the SeaGlass Carousel. On the carousel, riders sit within iridescent fish and glide through a 360-degree aquatic adventure. The carousel’s bioluminescent design honors the waterfront site as well as another landmark, the Castle Clinton, one of the country’s earliest aquariums.

Coney Island Coney Island

Known as the "the People's Playground," this famous amusement area in Brooklyn has witnessed an illustrious past. In the early 1900s, Coney Island enticed New Yorkers to visit with its bathing pavilions, seaside resorts and amusement park. The Great Depression took its toll on the fun-loving spot, causing many attractions to close. But after years of economic instability, Coney Island has reclaimed its place on the Brooklyn map, with a fresh roster of eateries and entertainment (including a July Fourth hot dog-eating contest and an annual Mermaid Parade ) found along the boardwalk. Coney Island now features several separate amusement parks, as well as a museum, which hosts a variety of exhibits and shows.

According to recent visitors, Coney Island is a worthwhile trip in the summer if you have the time and are traveling with young kids who would enjoy the rides. If you're not up for indulging your inner thrill-seeker, you can also walk along the beach, which spans nearly 3 miles and features several sports courts, as well as playgrounds. A walk along the iconic Riegelmann Boardwalk is just as memorable, according to recent visitors.

Chrysler Building Chrysler Building free

Technically, the Chrysler Building is an office building open Monday through Friday, but you don't need to go inside to appreciate its aesthetic appeal. Recent visitors praised the building's unique architectural style (though a few wished you could still go inside to admire its intricate lobby and elevators).

Built in 1930, the Chrysler had a short-lived run as the tallest building in the city, before it was usurped of its title by the Empire State Building . Nevertheless, this 1,046-foot-high skyscraper remains a favorite among New Yorkers for its classic art deco style. And unlike the Empire State, at this site you won't need an expensive entry ticket, a strong stomach to stand soaring heights or patience for long lines to see what all the fuss is about. You can behold the building's menacing gargoyles and triangular openings from many spots in Manhattan. Though the lobby is currently closed to visitors, there have been talks of building an observation deck, though none is available at this time.

Finding Your Bearings In New York

At around 8.5 inhabitants, New York is the city with the biggest population in the United States.

Theres a reason Manhattan is packed with skyscrapers: All those people have to fit into a relatively small area, and over 50 million tourists who visit New York every year need a place to stay, too.

Of course, that means it can be a bit overwhelming at first if youre used to comparatively tiny and laid-back European cities.

New York City consists of 5 large districts, which are known as boroughs.

On 22places we share everything about our travels: with a lot of attention for details, inspirational, authentic, and above all: always honest. On our travel blog, we share useful travel tips and give you practical photography advice.

Its no secret that New York isnt exactly the cheapest destination for a city trip.

But lets be honest: This sprawling metropolis is most definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Cheap Accommodation In New Jersey

New Jersey is another state, but is located right across from Manhattan on the other side of the Hudson River.

Jersey City is right across from Manhattan and especially the hotels right at the water habe a beautiful view of the Manhattan Skyline. However, the hotel prices are not cheaper than in Manhattan, simply because you can get there pretty fast by subway.

If you really want to save money, you should look at the hotels in Newark. They dont offer a view on Manhattan, since Newark is located a little further outside, but a good room costs between 120 and 170 dollars.

You should definitely book a hotel close to the Newark Penn Station. With the red PATH Train Line you will need 22 minutes to the World Trade Center. A one way ticket costs 2,75 dollars .

Pros of staying in Newark:

  • You get more for your money than in Manhattan
  • If you land in Newark, you are closer to the airport

Cons of staying in Newark:

  • You will need 20 to 30 minutes to get to Manhattan
  • You dont have a view on the skyline, so you dont get that authentic New York feel

Our personal hotel recommendations for Newark:

Choose The Right Season To Visit New Jersey

Princeton in winter

Though you can visit New Jersey any time of the year, to get the most out of your trip, you want to make sure to plan your visit when were experiencing milder weather. Our climate shifts dramatically for each season. The best time to visit New Jersey is in warmer weather like Spring and Summer, so you can take advantage of everything that NJ has to offer.

Summers in NJ can be hot, humid, and downright brutal, especially in mid-late July. If you want to enjoy shore points such as Atlantic City and Cape May, summer is definitely the best time to come, but earlier think June through early July.

If youre not coming for the beach and want good sightseeing weather, Spring and early Autumn are your best bets for when to visit New Jersey.

Should you happen to be in the area during the colder winter months, you can enjoy ice-skating and indoor venues such as museums just make sure to bundle up.

Cheap Accommodation In New York With Airbnb

If you look on Airbnb, youll often find apartments listed that are considerably cheaper than comparable hotel rooms. Wed still advise against staying in an Airbnb apartment in New York.

Airbnb ruins the housing market for locals

We used to be huge fans of Airbnb. For two reasons: It allows you to rent out your apartment when youre on vacation, and you get to stay at a private apartment instead of a hotel and feel at home everywhere in the world.

The basic concept is great. But these days, Airbnb is full of professional vacation rentals leased for the sole purpose of putting them on Airbnb and filled with random ugly furniture to make a quick buck by renting them out 365 days a year.

The result: The housing market in major cities has become even more overcrowded and prices have skyrocketed. People are being driven out of popular districts, which then devolve into total tourist traps. That really sucks and we dont want to contribute to this cycle any longer.

Weve had several bad experiences with Airbnb.

Whats more, weve had some very bad experiences with Airbnb apartments over the past few years and were very disappointed with their customer service.

We ended up emailing back and forth with Airbnbs customer service for several days, sometimes even weeks, only to come to the realization that guests ultimately get the short end of the stick when problems arise.

Q: How Much Does The Ferry Cost From Nj To Nyc

Answer: The Ferry cost $9 for adults and there are discounts for kids. Compared to the PATH subway system this is X3 as much. For some people the best option is to take the Ferry over in the morning to enjoy the city views and the PATH back at night . If you choose to split transit between the PATH and the ferry it is best to park near the Newport Ferry Landing / PATH Stations .

Are you planning to travel but dont know where to stay outside of New York City? Well, if you are a budget-minded traveler seeking cheaper accommodation with easy access to the Big Apple City, here is your answer.

With over 65.1 million visitors each year, over 20% of which are international travelers, New York is undoubtedly a hub of activities.

Popularly known as the Big Apple, the city is an ultimate representation of a cosmopolitan destination, and a true definition of urban living.

This has made the cost of living here quite unforgiving, and even the long-time dwellers are increasingly searching for alternatives.

For budget-conscious travelers, staying in NYC during your vacation, therefore, becomes something you should try to avoid.

Life here is quite expensive, and accommodations costs wont spare your wallet. For this reason, you should have an idea of where to stay outside of New York City before you even travel .

New York City comprises 5 boroughs, namely Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx.

But, when people talk of the high-cost NYC what they are mostly referring to is Manhattan.

Manhattan is the most expensive of all NYCs boroughs, and its the epicenter of NYCs economic activities.

It also serves as the Citys administrative center, as well as its historical and cultural identifier.

So, when looking for where to stay outside of New York City , youre probably being pushed away by the high costs in Manhattan.

Where To Stay In New Jersey With Easy Access To Nyc

We’re new to the whole NYC scene , but we’re dying to explore NYC . It’s overwhelming for outsiders to figure out the best way to do this. Any suggestions? We’re coming from and would like to stay outside the city and commute by train. Thanks for your advice. If you ever need advice about DC or Baltimore , let me know!

I would just say stay in NYC . There is so much to see in New Jersey . Here are a few links

I would stay right in Midtown Manhattan. Almost any place you want to go is within a couple of mile’s walk, and if you aren’t into walking, the subway is easy to use. I’m a bit lacking in the “big city” thing, too, and don’t do well with train and bus schedules.

If you are set on staying outside the city, we just made a trip to East Rutherford, NJ for the Eagles concert at the new Meadowlands Stadium, and stayed at the Homewood Suites. The manager was very helpful with bus schedules to get us into Manhattan for the day. The bus picked us up just a few blocks from the hotel and it was a 20 or 30 minute ride to the Port Authority bus terminal near Times Square . The round trip fare was $8.50 per person. The manager said that there were also trains we could take, but we would have to change trains somewhere along the way.

Unless you are set on a specific play or just like to pay the Ticketmaster premium, I would go to the TKTS kiosk at Times Square on the day you want to see a play. There are lots of 1/2 price tickets available if you are flexible about what you want to see.

“We are saddened to hear of the passing of Korey Cunningham,” the Giants wrote on X Friday. “He was a vital part of the spirit and camaraderie of the locker room. Our thoughts are with Korey’s family, friends and teammates.”

Clifton police told NBC News they responded to Cunningham's home around 1:15 p.m. Thursday after a family member reported not hearing from him. Police forced entry and "found him deceased," a spokesperson said.

“No indication of foul play at this time," the police spokesperson said, noting Cunningham’s death is under investigation.

No cause of death was disclosed.

The 6-foot-6, 311-pound lineman from Alabama played college ball at Cincinnati and was drafted in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals.

In his career he played for the Cardinals, New England Patriots and the Giants. He was released from the Giants last year and did not play in the NFL since.

The Patriots also shared a statement Friday saying the team was "saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Korey Cunningham."

"We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Korey’s family, teammates and all who mourn his loss," the team said.

Several former teammates shared tributes over the news of Cunningham’s passing.

Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh wrote on X : “I was in Arizona when we drafted Korey Cunnigham in 2018. He moved onto the NY Giants and was living in NJ this past year.”

“We would invite him to the OL dinner every week even though he wasn’t on the team which doesn’t happen…ever. Team dinners are for players on the team only. Except for Korey….solely because he was beloved by all the guys regardless if you knew him or not! He’d tell stories and we’d laugh our asses off all night,” Pugh said.

“Today is a sad day but I’ll always remember the good times and the laughs,” he added. “Everyone who knew Korey Cunnigham was better for it. The world lost a great soul.”

Giants safety Jason Pinnock shared on his Instagram story : “This one hurt!! Regardless of what you was going through you wore the biggest smile!"

"You was the first person to come help me move when I was getting settled at NYG.. middle of camp & you frinding to be on the team & learn new playbook, you was the first at my house ready! Take care of yourselves & call your friends ppl. I love you brudda!" he added.

Any recommendations for accommodations for a family of five with easy access to Manhattan? Would like to stay in NJ in hopes of more budget friendly prices. Thanks.

' class=

Well, your definition of "easy access" may vary but really the only convenient options are the Jersey City-Hoboken waterfront areas in close proximity to the PATH stations. Remember you'll be spending more time and money (fares on the PATH don't have free transfers to the subway and are not included in the subway unlimited card), so you may find the expense savings limited...

Where are you flying into? NJ makes no sense at all if it's JFK or LGA. If it's EWR, then stay somewhere near the PATH as Dave mentions.

But the downside to staying in NJ is that you would be less likely to go back to your room to freshen up before dinner or the like.

Don't forget about the cost of the PATH each ride as well and the time to commute. Sometimes the savings on accommodations are washed away by those factors.

You should post your dates, sleeping requirements (number of beds and such), budge and how you're getting here including the airport (if you're flying) to get a meaningful answer

In the past, hotel prices have been low around that time so I would keep Manhattan as an option. Book something canceleable now, and keep looking. Marriott East Side has that configuration I believe.

In Jersey City NJ, I'm at the Courtyard Marriott right now which is right next to a PATH station. Hyatt Regency is also next to PATH (Exchange Place) and is on the water with some fantastic views of lower Manhattan. Not sure if they can accomodate 5 but worth investigating. But do stay in Manhattan if budget allows, you'll save a lot of commute time and dollars.

For just two nights, stay in Manhattan.

Can't speak for hotels that might meet your requirement, but the hotel experts will chime in at some point.

Don't worry about driving in the city. You can try to get a hotel in midtown west and it wouldn't be far from the Lincoln Tunnel. Drive into the city during off peak times and you'l be fine.

The Skyline hotel is a budget option with inexpensive parking and the room set up you want IN Manhattan.

Are you all need "adult size" beds or are any of the kids little enough for a crib?

There are options to park in NJ and take pubic transit in to a hotel (cheaper parking, no tunnel toll)

The Port Imperial ferry is one parking option http://www.nywaterway.com/indoorparkinggarage.aspx and they have a free shuttle bus in Manhattan that can get you closer to many hotels.

In Manhattan, the Travel Inn and Skyline Hotel have more affordable on-site parking and are close to the tunnel for minimal driving in the city.

In NJ, walkability to the PATH train is best as it offers 24/7 transit for $2.75/ride https://www.panynj.gov/path/maps.html

Other NJ locations may have more expensive transit or inconvenient schedule availability outside of commuting hours. http://www.njtransit.com/ so, as noted above the extra travel time and costs may not make a "cheap" hotel cheaper.

I'm getting the Courtyard Jersey City for 5 (2 adults/3 kids 2 queens 1 sofa) around $210/night on marriott.com. This is a *quick* search, and it's late... :)

I used to live in Secaucus and there are many choices under $150/night for your dates. Just outside the Lincoln Tunnel or there is a train that takes 15 minutes to get into the city.

New York Giants NFL Draft Day 2 Preview

What's next for the New York Giants on Day 2 of the NFL draft?

  • Author: Brandon Olsen
  • Publish date: Apr 26, 2024

In this story:

The New York Giants walked away with their new top wideout , LSU’s Malik Nabers, in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft. This came after rumors intensified that the Giants were in talks with the New England Patriots about trading up to No. 3 to get Drake Maye. However, the Patriots, who selected Maye, apparently had no interest in trading out of that spot; otherwise, their reported asking price might have been slightly more reasonable.

Leading up to the draft, there were rumors that six quarterbacks could be selected in the top half of the first round, but many, including myself, didn’t believe that would happen. Now that we’ve seen early runs on quarterbacks, receivers, and offensive tackles, it’s likely that defensive players and interior offensive linemen will fly off the board early on Day 2.

If you look at the Giants Country Big Board , there are still plenty of talented players that teams will be looking to add to their rosters. Our top safety, linebacker, interior offensive linemen, and nickel are all still available, as are two of our top three interior defensive linemen.

This bodes well for the Giants if they want to add a quarterback like Spencer Rattler, a cornerback like Cooper DeJean, Max Melton, or Kool-Aid McKinstry, or even a 3-technique like Johnny Newton. Depending on how the board in front of the Giants shakes out, there are routes to go off.

While many teams had conversations about trades both prior to and during the first round, most teams decided to stick and pick with their initial spot on Thursday night. That doesn’t mean that on Friday night, teams will do the same; in fact, some teams may be more willing to trade down if they feel comfortable with their first pick, or they may be more aggressive about adding a player that’s falling down the board.

Through the first twenty picks of the night, we should see players like DeJean, Mike Sainristril, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Payton Wilson, and Johnny Newton find out where they’re going to play pro football.

Although six quarterbacks were taken, it wouldn’t shock me to see a team aggressively trade up and draft Spencer Rattler since the position runs dry shortly after his name is called. It’s worth noting that Rattler is the only quarterback remaining in the draft who had a 30-visit with the Giants.

Six Most Valuable Defenders

  • Minnesota S Tyler Nubin
  • Iowa CB Cooper DeJean
  • NC State LB Payton Wilson
  • Rutgers CB Max Melton
  • Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry
  • Illinois IDL Johnny Newton

On the defensive side of the ball, five players are still available, and they are inside our collective top 32. Two receivers and an interior offensive lineman are also there who likely won’t be available through pick 47 but are also players I don’t think the Giants should seriously consider drafting due to positional value, team need, and best player available.

Trump's hush money trial

Day 4 of Trump New York hush money trial

From CNN's Jeremy Herb, Lauren del Valle and Kara Scannell in the courthouse

We've wrapped up our live updates. Learn more about Friday's proceedings by scrolling through the posts below, and return on Monday for more live coverage of Trump's hush money criminal trial .

Man who lit himself on fire outside of the courthouse has died, law enforcement official says

From CNN's John Miller

Police and emergency officials gather in a park near the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse in New York, where a man lit himself on fire, on April 19.

The man who lit himself on fire outside of the Manhattan courthouse where Donald Trump’s trial was taking place died Friday night, a senior law enforcement official told CNN.

NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey said earlier that the man walked into the center of Collect Pond Park, which is directly across from the courthouse.

He opened his backpack and took out pamphlets that he scattered in the park before setting himself on fire.

The man was taken to Cornell Burn Center earlier in critical condition. Police had said they thought it was not likely that he would survive.

Key takeaways from the final day of jury selection in Trump's hush money trial

From CNN's Jeremy Herb and Lauren del Valle

The historic first criminal trial of a former US president begins with opening statements on Monday.

Judge Juan Merchan swiftly  moved through consideration of roughly 200 potential jurors  to find a jury pool of 18 by midday Friday, swearing in 12 jurors and six alternates who will decide Donald Trump’s fate in the New York hush money case.

Here are takeaways from the final day of jury selection:

  • The jury is set: Four women and one man were  added to the jury on Friday as five of the six alternates for the case. They will sit in the jury box and will hear the duration of the trial, but they will only be put on the jury should one or more of the 12 jurors be excused from the case. Prosecutors focused their questions in the case on preparing the jurors to accept testimony from less-than-favorable witnesses, like Michael Cohen. Trump’s attorneys, meanwhile, were almost singularly focused on a single question: What did jurors think about Donald Trump?
  • Final round of juror questions highlights emotional decision for potential jurors: There were several emotional moments during Friday morning’s questioning of potential jurors, with two jurors telling the judge in the middle of voir dire that they no longer felt they could serve. One female prospective juror who works in sales for a trading company began crying when she was handed the microphone. At one point after that jury had left, another juror raised her hand and told the court she started feeling “high anxiety” as she sat and listened to a line of questioning about the credibility of witnesses.
  • Trump is still trying to stop his trial: Despite seating a jury, Trump’s legal team again tried to stop the trial in its tracks with another strategic appeal. In a new motion filed Friday morning, Trump’s lawyers once again asked an appeals court to temporarily halt the trial until they ruled on Trump’s appeal to move the venue of the hush money trial out of Manhattan. The motion was denied.
  • A hearing on Trump’s gag order violations is set for Tuesday: Despite Trump’s attempts to delay, opening statements in his criminal trial will begin Monday morning. On Tuesday, the morning will shift to Trump’s discussion of witnesses in the case, as Merchan plans to hold a hearing on social media posts by the former president that prosecutors say violated his gag order. They’re asking the judge to fine Trump $1,000 per post and remind him that violations of the gag order could result in imprisonment.

5 alternate jurors were selected Friday. Here's what we know about them

From CNN's Kara Scannell, Lauren del Valle, and Jeremy Herb

The full panel in Donald Trump's hush money trial has been set after five alternate jurors were selected Friday.

Remember: A full 12-person jury was seated earlier this week, along with one alternate juror.

Here's what we know about the alternate jurors selected Friday:

Alternate Juror #1

  • A woman originally from Spain
  • Not currently working
  • Married with adult children
  • Likes to travel
  • Says she does not follow the news and does not have any social media accounts
  • Says she doesn't "have strong opinions about former President Donald Trump that would interfere" with her ability to be a fair and impartial juror

Alternate Juror #3

  • A native New Yorker
  • He is a fan of martial arts

Alternate Juror #4

  • A contract specialist who has previously lived in New Jersey and Oregon
  • She is married with two children
  • Says she likes to see live music and take her boys to basketball games
  • Says she’s “not a big news person” but looks at The New York Times, Reuters and the BBC
  • Does have social media profiles but doesn’t post or use them

Alternate Juror #5

  • Works for a clothing company
  • Says she gets her news from Google

Alternate Juror #6

  • Project manager for a construction company
  • She is divorced with three sons
  • Her boyfriend is in law enforcement
  • Says she listens to true crime podcasts
  • Her father was convicted of a federal crime when she was in high school but she said she was shielded from the details

The full jury is sworn in. Catch up on what happened ahead of opening statements in the hush money trial

From CNN staff

The full jury panel has now been seated in the hush money trial against Donald Trump, clearing the way for opening statements to start on Monday.

There are 12 jurors and six alternates who will hear the case against the former president.

Opening statements are set to begin Monday at 9:30 a.m. ET. Court will be a half day on Monday and Tuesday due to Passover, ending at 2 p.m. ET each day.

Leaving the courthouse Friday, Trump again called the trial a "giant witch hunt." Just hours after jury selection finished, an appeals court denied Trump’s latest attempt to stop the trial from going forward.

Here’s what happened today:

Finishing jury selection:

  • The remaining five alternates were sworn in on Friday. All 12 jurors and one alternate were selected Thursday.
  • The day started with a group of  22 potential jurors answering a questionnaire and facing more questions from lawyers on both sides.
  • Trump watched the alternates' answers very closely as they shared their opinions of him, turning toward the jury box as they responded.
  • Before the lunch break, Judge Juan Merchan gave the jurors instructions not to discuss the case with others or research it. He said the court cannot start until all 18 jurors are present each day.

Sandoval hearing:

  • The judge held a Sandoval hearing in the afternoon after the full jury was sworn in. The routine procedure aimed to address Trump’s criminal history and assess how much prosecutors can ask about it if the defendant testifies.
  • Prosecutors want to bring up past cases — including a $355 million civil fraud order and the E. Jean Carroll defamation case — but the former president's legal team argues those issues aren't relevant to the case at hand .
  • The judge said lawyers will have his decision on that matter by Monday.
  • It's not yet clear whether the former president will testify. But coming out of the courtroom, Trump said “yes” when asked whether he would take the stand.

Meantime: A New York appeals court judge denied Trump’s motion for an interim stay pending a  change of venue appeal . This was the latest attempt by the former president to stop the hush money trial before opening statements.

Outside the courtroom:

  • A man lit himself on fire outside the courthouse , New York Police Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey said.
  • The man walked into the park across the street from the courthouse, throwing flyers into the air , according to Maddrey. He then pulled a canister of what police believe to be an accelerant and lit himself on fire, he said.
  • The man is in critical condition at Cornell Burn Unit.
  • NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said police have not determined if the incident was related to Trump’s trial. He said the man did post about the incident on social media and that his internet presence will be part of the ongoing investigation .

No cameras are allowed inside the Manhattan courtroom where Donald Trump's hush money is underway, but sketch artists are capturing the scenes.

Former President Donald Trump, right, speaks with his attorney Todd Blanche in court on April 19 in New York. Trump's attorney Emil Bove is seen in the distance.

Trump’s request for interim stay of criminal trial is denied

From CNN's Lauren del Valle

A New York appeals court judge denied Donald Trump’s motion for an interim stay pending a change of venue appeal of his criminal trial.

This was the latest attempt by the former president to stop the hush money trial right before opening statements, which are set to be heard on Monday.

Judge Marsha Michael gave five minutes for each side to argue their case at the hastily arranged hearing Friday afternoon.

Trump says judge in New York hush money case “wants this to go as fast as possible”

From CNN's Kate Sullivan and Kaanita Iyer

Former President Donald Trump at Manhattan criminal court in New York on Friday.

Former President Donald Trump spoke to reporters as he exited the courtroom Friday, and said Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the hush money trial, “wants this to go as fast as possible."

“The trial starts on Monday, which is long before a lot of people thought. The judge wants this to go as fast as possible. That’s for his reasons, not for my reasons,” Trump said.

The former president also called the trial "a giant witch hunt" and railed against people involved in the separate New York civil fraud case — including Judge Arthur Engoron and New York Attorney General Letitia James — to make the case that Democrats are targeting him.

Court has adjourned

The court has adjourned for the day. Opening statements in the hush money trial are expected to begin Monday.
