Lahore is known as the “city of gadens,” and over the years authorities have ensured that parks across the metropolis are well maintained and well kept. Just like Shalimar Gardens , Jallo Park , and Jinnah Park , Lahore Zoo is one of the most famous places in Lahore that offer open, lush green spaces. It is purportedly the oldest zoo in the subcontinent and it houses a wide range of animals and birds. If you are in Lahore, you should, at least once, pay a visit to this place, especially if you have young kids. Let’s explore why you should visit Lahore Zoo in this blog.

History Of Lahore Zoo

Lahore Zoo was established in 1872 after Lala Mela Ram donated the aviary. The construction for this started in the 1860’s. From 1872 to 1921, it remained under the management of Lahore Municipal Committee, before being transferred to Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner, Lahore, and was managed through a Zoo Advisory Committee until 1962. Soon after this, its management was placed with the West Pakistan Agriculture Department and later on with the Livestock and Dairy Development Department. Finally, the management of Lahore Zoo was entrusted to the Wildlife & Parks Department in 1982 and is presently governed by the Zoo Management Committee (ZMC) of Lahore Zoo constituted under Punjab Zoos & Safari Parks Rules 2012.

Since its transfer to the Wildlife Department in 1982, a number of major changes in the exhibits, the layout of buildings, the landscape pattern and the administration have taken place. With these initiatives and development work, the Lahore Zoo has become a self-financed organization meeting all its expenditures from its own resources.

It is the place families throng to during weekends, public holidays, and especially winter and summer breaks. Lahore Zoo hosts over 4.5 million people annually, and this comes as no surprise as on any given day you’ll see that it offers clean and green spaces, properly-built walkways, canteen facilities, and a host of refreshments — all to ensure all visitors have a good time.

It shares a wall (or green belt) with Jinnah Park, and in a single trip you can explore both rare plant and animal species on either side of the fence. Its location allows people to visit the place quite regularly and easily.

Mall Road is one of the oldest and most popular roads in Lahore . It houses most of the government buildings and government employees’ houses and goes all the way to Old Lahore as well. Lahore Zoo is on the opposite side of Alhamra Arts Council, another prominent attraction on Mall Road.

Apart from this, Lahore Zoo is only 3 km from Lahore Railway Station Road , and 4 km from General Bus Stand.

Now, let’s see what the zoo looks like and what it has to offer to visitors.

Lahore Zoo houses about 30 wild bird species

Presently, Lahore Zoo houses about 1200 animals of 120 species, including a number of primates, big cats, deer, antelope, ratites, reptiles and birds. Lahore Zoo can boast of a collage of old and young trees; 900 trees of 60 species make the environment worth living and visiting; a complete ecosystem with at least 30 wild birds species at one time and about 100 species during the year besides the small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and the invertebrates.

Apart from seeing and learning about the animals, children can enjoy animal rides as well. This includes horseback riding, camel rides, and mechanical elephant rides. She died in May 2017.

  • Best Places to Visit in Lahore

Lahore is known for its rich history and culture; the authorities have maintained its legacy across the metropolis over the years. Just like Lahore Fort, Shalimar Gardens, Jahangir tomb, and Data Darbar, Lahore Zoo is one of the most popular places to visit in Lahore.   It is one of the oldest zoos in the sub-continent and offers you a wide variety of animals and birds.

If you have young kids and fortunately you are in Lahore, at least pay a visit to this place. The facility that houses the endangering species, in most cases, cares for them and conserves them should indeed be your top priority place of visit.

So, let’s explore why this place should be your top priority when visiting Lahore.

History of Lahore Zoo

Lahore Zoo got its start in 1872 with a small aviary donated to the Lahore Municipal Corporation by Lal Mahindra Ram. The animal collection grew over time, and the Zoo expanded. It later became interested in conservation, education, and research, in addition to providing public recreational facilities.

By 2010, the Zoo housed approximately 1280 trees of 71 species and 1380 animals of 136 species, including 996 birds of 82, 49 reptiles of eight, and 336 mammals of 45.

The Lahore Municipal Corporation managed the Zoo from 1872 to 192. Later, the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore took control. In 1962, management was transferred to the Livestock and Dairy Development Department, and in 1982, to the Wildlife and Parks Department. The zoo saw very little development between its founding in 1872 and its transfer to the Wildlife and Parks department in 1982. It has upgraded its exhibits, layout, and landscaping since 1982 and has become an autonomous organization.

On July 25, 2005, an 18-month master planning, improvement, and development project was approved. It was carried out by the ‘Zoo Maintenance Committee and was sponsored by the Punjab Government’s Planning and Development Department. The project, which cost around 202.830 million Pakistani rupees, aimed to improve and expand facilities.

Attractions Offered by Lahore Zoo

What makes the Lahore Zoo so appealing? This isn’t very easy because the location is a hub of interest and recreation.

Fancy Birds Aviary

One of the most popular attractions at Lahore Zoo is the Fancy Birds Aviary. You can see some rare and exotic birds here. The aviary is home to over 50 birds, including Great white pelicans, Greater flamingos, Muscovy ducks, Ring-necked pheasants, Chukar partridges, Asian houbara bustards, Demoiselle cranes, and Black-crowned cranes, among various others.

Bird at lahore zoo

It’s one of the most popular attractions at the Zoo, and it’s easy to see why. The aviary is full of colorful birds worldwide, and visitors can watch them fly, perch, and play.

You can view the birds up close and even feed them. The Lahore Zoo also offers educational programs about birds for school groups. With so many species of birds, the Fancy Birds Aviary is a must-see for bird lovers of all ages.

Lion House at Lahore Zoo

Lahore Zoo is home to different animals, including lions. The Lion House is a popular attraction at the Zoo, where you can see these majestic animals up close.

The Lion House was built in 1872, one of the oldest buildings at the Lahore Zoo. Initially built to house tigers, it was later converted into lion habitat. The Lion House is made of brick and has a metal roof.

The house has two levels, and the lions have access to both. The ground level has an indoor area where the lions can rest and cool off. The upper level has an outdoor space where the lions can sun themselves and play. The Lion House also has a viewing platform where visitors can watch the lions.

Elephant House

The elephant house at Lahore Zoo is a large enclosure specifically designed to meet the needs of these majestic creatures. It was constructed in 1972. The house has ample open space for the elephants to move around and a pool where they can cool off and play. The enclosure also has a sand pit where the elephants can roll around and relax.

In addition, the elephant house has several trees that provide shade and shelter for the elephants. The zoo staff provides the elephants with hay, fruits, and vegetables. The team also works hard to keep the enclosure clean and debris-free. The elephant house at the zoo provides these fantastic animals with a safe and comfortable home.

You can also feed the elephant with the mentioned foods on the board.

The only elephant, Suzi, died in May 2017 due to several illnesses. But now the administration is planning to bring another elephant to the Zoo.

Monkey House at Lahore Zoo

Lahore Zoo is distinguished from other zoos by the presence of a large and diverse population of monkeys.

Four new enclosures were constructed in 2012 over the Zoo’s previous outdated monkey house and are located just west of the Zoo’s main entrance. The first enclosure is home to the Zoo’s olive baboon family, which consists of approximately nine individuals. A pair of tufted capuchins and mantled guerezas reside in the following two enclosures. The last enclosure contains a family of vervet monkeys.

A family of porcupines, an adult spur-thighed tortoise, and a pair of smooth-coated otters are housed in enclosures nearby. In the past, the Monkey House was home to black-footed grey langurs, mandrills, and spider monkeys.

Chimpanzee House

The Zoo’s chimpanzee house is a large enclosure with a climbing frame, trees, and plenty of enrichment toys. The chimpanzees are well-cared for and have ample opportunity to exercise and play. Travelers to the Zoo can watch the chimps swing from branch to branch, chase each other around, and play with their toys. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the natural behavior of these amazing animals.

Aligator at Lahore Zoo

In addition to housing the Zoo’s chimpanzees, this structure also houses wolves, swamp cats, and rhesus macaques. In 1994, the Zoo acquired its first pair of chimpanzees, male Romeo and female Julie. Tinku, a male chimpanzee, was born to the couple in 2000 but died in September 2004 due to pneumonia.

Julie gave birth to two female chimpanzees named Pinky and Honey in August 2001. Romeo died in 2008, also of pneumonia. Juliet died of hepatitis in 2012, and Pinky passed away in 2014, leaving the Zoo with only one chimpanzee, Honey. This structure also serves as a temporary holding area for leopards, lions, and pumas, among other feline species. The facility previously housed cheetahs and baboons.

Lahore Zoo’s chimpanzee house is a must-see for anyone interested in animal welfare or simply seeing some adorable primates up close.

Waterfowl Lake at Lahore Zoo

Waterfowl Lake is another popular zoo attraction where you can feed the ducks and geese.

This lake, located south of the Fancy Aviary, is home to numerous waterfowl and wading bird species. It consists of four islands containing some of the Zoo’s oldest trees. A banyan tree reportedly over 400 years old is located adjacent to the enclosure. This zoo section houses black swans, Muscovy ducks, lesser flamingos, and Dalmatian pelicans, among other species. A small chamber containing a pair of wild boars is located nearby.

So, Lahore Zoo is a great place to spend a day with family and friends, and Waterfowl Lake is a big part of what makes it so unique.

Reptile House

This Zoo is home to many different animals, including reptiles. The Reptile House offers visitors a chance to see some of these creatures up close.

It’s where families gather on weekends, public holidays, and notably during the winter and summer vacations.

Lahore Zoo Travel Guide

In a glimpse:.

Lahore is renowned as the “City of Gardens” in Pakistan’s beautiful province, Punjab , and administrators have worked hard to ensure that parks throughout the metropolis are well-maintained and well-kept over the years. As a result, Lahore Zoo, like Shalimar Gardens, Jallo Park, and Jinnah Park, is one of Lahore’s most well-known sites for open, lush green spaces.

The subcontinent’s oldest zoo, with various animals and birds, is becoming a major tourist attraction. If you are in Lahore, you should visit this site at least once, especially if you have minor children, as it is the best place for them.

The Lahore Zoo, despite its age, has managed to remain in the city’s core – on Mall Road. It shares a wall (or green belt) with Jinnah Park, allowing you to see rare plant and animal species on both sides of the fence in a single trip. Its position makes it convenient for individuals to visit it frequently.

Mall Road is one of Lahore’s oldest and busiest thoroughfares. It holds the majority of government buildings and employees’ homes, and it extends to Old Lahore. The Lahore Zoo is located on the opposite side of Mall Road from the Alhamra Arts Council, another popular tourist destination.

Aside from that, the Lahore Zoo is merely 3 kilometers from the Lahore Railway Station Road and 4 kilometers from the General Bus Stand.

Lahore Zoo was founded in 1872 after the aviary was donated by Lala Mela Ram. The building of this structure began in the 1860s. It was overseen by the Lahore Municipal Committee from 1872 to 1921 before being handed to the Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner, Lahore, and managed by a Zoo Advisory Committee until 1962. Soon after, the West Pakistan Agriculture Department took control, followed by the Livestock and Dairy Development Department.

Finally, in 1982, the Wildlife & Parks Department was entrusted with the management of Lahore Zoo, which is now managed by the Zoo Management Committee (ZMC) of Lahore Zoo, which was established under the Punjab Zoos & Safari Parks Rules 2012.

The exhibits, building layout, landscape pattern, and administration have changed dramatically since its transfer to the Wildlife Department in 1982. Thanks to these initiatives and development work, the Lahore Zoo has become a self-funded organization, covering all its expenses with its funds.

It’s where families gather on weekends, public holidays, and notably during the winter and summer vacations. Lahore Zoo attracts over 4.5 million visitors each year, which is unsurprising. It provides clean and green spaces, well-built paths, cafeteria facilities, and various refreshments to guarantee that all visitors have a pleasant time.

You are welcome to come anytime between 9:00 a.m. and dusk. As a result, the time restriction would most likely shift from summer to winter. Aside from that, the zoo is open seven days a week.

Areas and Attractions

Fancy birds aviary.

This is the zoo’s oldest area, located immediately east of the main gate, as the zoo initially began as an aviary in 1872. The majority of the zoo’s game birds and parrots call it home. Four rows of double-sided birdcages house peafowl, pheasants, partridges, western capped pigeons, and various parrot species such as macaws, grey parrots, etc.

The glorious beauty of the peacock presents the feast to the eyes

A group of Asiatic jackals, juvenile spur-thighed tortoises, and Asian houbara live in a series of enclosures at the section’s eastern end. A small habitat nearby, which initially housed smooth-coated otters and now houses Indian flap shell turtles and red-eared sliders, also serve as a temporary holding area for the zoo’s immature mugger crocodiles.

The current Lion House complex, which spans 24,500 square feet and costs 5.1 million rupees to construct, was rebuilt in 2012 after being completed in 1872. It consists of three concrete buildings, each with two neighboring outdoor enclosures and internal cages. The zoo’s Bengal tigers and pumas are housed in the first of these structures. The Lahore Zoo now includes fifteen tigers and three pumas, the majority of whom were born there.

The lions are housed in the second structure, which has three indoor compartments and two outdoor cages. The zoo welcomed 13 lion cubs in 2015 and 2016, bringing the number of lions to more than 20. The zoo’s black bear family lives in the third and final building. The zoo’s resident black bear pair has given birth to two litters of two cubs, all of whom are still living at the zoo, in 2009 and 2011. The only enclosure in the Lion House without an inside viewing area for tourists is this one.

Elephant House

This is one of the zoo’s most popular attractions, built-in 1972 for 500,000 rupees. It is divided into three substantial indoor chambers, each with its outdoor paddock. Originally home to three endangered African pachyderm species, the African plains elephant, southern white rhinoceros, and common hippopotamus, it now holds a female hippo, Rani, who arrived in July 2006, and a male white rhinoceros. Monkey House

These four new enclosures, built-in 2012 to replace the zoo’s existing out-of-date monkey house, are located just west of the zoo’s main gate. The zoo’s olive baboon family, which now numbers around nine individuals, is housed in the first enclosure. A pair of tufted capuchins and mantled guerezas live in the following two compartments.

A family of velvet monkeys lives in the final enclosure. The zoo’s porcupine family, adult spur-thighed tortoises, and a pair of smooth-coated otters are housed in adjoining cages.

Chimpanzee House

This structure contains a variety of animals, including wolves, swamp cats, and rhesus macaques, as well as the zoo’s chimps. Male Romeo and female Julie, the zoo’s first chimps, was introduced in 1994. Tinku, a male chimp, was born in 2000 but died in September 2004 due to disease. Julie gave birth to two female chimps named Pinky and Honey in August of 2001.

In 2008, Romeo died of pneumonia as well. Juliet died of hepatitis in 2012, and Pinky was killed in 2014, leaving Honey as the zoo’s last chimp. This structure also serves as a temporary holding area for cats of various types, such as leopards, lions, and pumas. In addition, cheetahs and baboons were among the animals historically housed here.

Waterfowl Lake

This lake, located south of the Fancy Aviary, is home to various waterfowl and wading birds. It consists of four islands, each featuring some of the zoo’s oldest trees. A banyan tree estimated to be over 400 years old is located near the enclosure. Black swans, Muscovy ducks, smaller flamingos, and Dalmatian pelicans are among the animals housed in this zoo section. A small chamber harboring a pair of wild boars is nearby.

Reptile House

The majority of the zoo’s reptiles, including Indian cobras, Sindh kraits, saw-scaled vipers, and Indian pythons, are housed in this structure. In 2006, the Reptile House was restored to improve display airflow and provide air conditioning for the creatures. Guinea pigs are among the other animals housed. The building also has a small taxidermy museum that displays numerous animals that once resided at the zoo.

Giraffes, mugger crocodiles, blackbucks, nilgais, red deer, hog deer, guanacos, plains zebra, ostrich, emus, and vulturine Guinea fowl are among the other famous animals present at Lahore Zoo. Plan your tour to Lahore with a guide to Pakistan.

Visiting Lahore Zoo – Always a Treasure to Memories

This February’s long weekend, my niece and nephew came from Islamabad to enjoy the sights and sounds of Lahore. They were really very excited that they will visit Lahore Zoo with their family and some cousins and to be honest I was way more excited than them.

So in the beautiful weather of February, we went to visit Lahore zoo. Ignited by the memories of my childhood I hurried towards the entrance of the zoo, without realizing that there would be crowd of people as it is one of the few attractions for children and families. Lahore zoo being one of the biggest zoos in Pakistan attracts 4.5 million visitors annually.

Lahore Zoo

First in the list for the visit was Bird Aviary. Bird Aviary of Lahore zoo is as old as the zoo itself. Lahore zoo started as an  aviary .   In 1872 Lal Mahundra Ram donated a small aviary to Lahore Municipal Corporation. With the passage of time animal collection increased and Lahore zoo expanded.   It is said that bird of feather flock together, however this wasn’t true for these beautiful birds of various kinds living in one vicinity. There are about 996 birds of 82 species in zoo. Every bird is unique and beautiful in its own way, however the birds which gathered my attention were macaws, pheasants and peacocks.

Lahore Zoo Peacock

After that it was hippopotamus’s enclosure turn. One of the most amazing sights to see is how wide this mighty animal can opens its mouth. We went to see the giraffes and crocodiles after that. The best part of the trip was to see big cats. It is so incredible to hear the lion’s roar. One can actually hear the echo from a long distance and feel the vibration when one is nearby the cage. It felt like a jungle safari in Africa.

Lion resting in lahore zoo

The tiger was next in line. I myself was and still am always fascinated by tigers. So it was amazing to see these beautiful magnificent creatures resting in winter sun. It was a marvelous sight. These critically endangered big cats have found a refuge from poachers and hunters in Lahore zoo.

At this point everyone was tired and wanted to have some rest and snacks so we headed towards the Jungle Café which is a nice addition to the Lahore Zoo.

white tiger a new addition

Energized by the snacks and some rest, children went to enjoy the camel ride while I missed Suzi. She was such a beautiful animal which was brought in zoo in 1972 to commemorate Lahore zoo’s 100 th anniversary in 1992.

While the kids were enjoying the new rides and jumping castle, I took a walk in the zoo but this time I was observing all the plants and trees. There are nearly 1280 plants and trees of 71 species. Some of these plants are native to subcontinent while other are native to China, Malaysia, and Africa and as far as Australia. These plants and trees have ecosystem of their own, supporting and providing shelters to not only zoo animals but also to crows, sparrows and squirrels.

attractions in lahore Zoo

During my walk I noticed various signboards placed all around the zoo for guidance and education of the visitors. These signboards and instruction boards are an easy way to educate children about plants and animals.

Recently Lahore Zoo has started animal adoption program, in which foster parents pay for the food for the adopted animal for a specific period of time. This is a great initiative which will not only help zoo but also support the welfare of the animals.

The Lahore zoo has come a long way. Starting from just a small aviary and gradually becoming the biggest zoo of Pakistan and one of the largest in South Asia. It has made great efforts not only in conversation of various endangered animals such as tigers and Asian black bears but also in making it visitor friendly.

Lahore Zoo is beautiful and majestic in its own way. Being one of the oldest zoo in world and housing number of animals and plants of various species, it is so incredible to be able to see history and wildlife together in the heart of the city.

Safari Park

  • Information

For someone who loves animals and feels a different kind of happiness when surrounded by them, Lahore Safari definitely is the go-to place for them. What could be more exhilarating than witnessing the wild animals so closely? Therefore, we decided to paint a virtual picture of the Lahore Wild Life Park(more commonly known as the Safari Park). Far from the hustle and bustle of daily life, Safari Park has been the center of attention of hundreds of wildlife lovers who want to experience the touch of adventure. It is ideally situated in a sparsely populated area near Rawind Road Lahore. The species housed here include Indian peafowl, Bengal tiger, common pheasant, emu, lion, mute swan, nilgai, ostrich, and silver pheasant among a few others. This place is a great space for kids to get familiar with different animal species.

Areas at Safari Park

Just beside the entrance, there is a small net enclosure, where freely roaming, beautiful peacocks, some spreading their feathers while others flying and playing, ducks and a variety of other wild birds are a source of great pleasure both for kids and grownups. Interestingly, visitors are allowed to go inside the hut and admire the beauty of nature at close quarters. The area has been neatly organized as per the need of these wild beauties. Just across the birds' zone, there is the real adventure zone of the park — the lions' and tigers' region. Enclosed by a solid iron fence, this particular area has plants that have an ambiance of a typical African forest and inside it lives the king of the jungle. It is home to lions and white tigers. With an aura of power and terror, these mighty animals can be seen roaming and roaring around arrogantly. Sitting in cars (with car windows closed tightly), tourists can have a round of the forest. It's a bit scary but truly adventurous! However, at the same time, it feels thoroughly daring and exciting. A few meters ahead there's a play area for kids with swings, a deer zone, and a very fresh calm little pond to stop over at. Boating and fishing facilities have been developed nearby as well.

If you have never been to Africa, you can get a feel of what it would be like to take a safari there once you visit this park with its well-kept ground and a wide variety of animal life. The thrilling experience of watching nature's magnificent creation so closely will absolutely submerge you in gratitude and praise for God.

Iranian president raisi, sindh cm discuss bilateral economic opportunities in karachi meeting.

visit to lahore zoo

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi met Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday during his visit to Karachi and had a detailed discussion on Pakistan-Iran economic opportunities, including issues concerning investment.

Raisi is currently on a three-day visit to Pakistan and had arrived a day ago. His visit is the first of its kind by any head of state after the February 8 general elections.

Raisi earlier landed at Jinnah International Airport’s old terminal where he was received by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and provincial ministers.

He later visited Mazar-i-Quaid where he laid a floral wreath and offered prayers with provincial officials and his delegation in tow.

Raisi’s subsequent visit was to the Sindh Chief Minister’s House.

A ceremony was held in which an honourary doctorate was awarded to the Iranian president by Governor Tessori.

A statement issued by CM Shah’s spokesperson Abdul Rasheed Channa said the Iranian president and provincial chief held a meeting discussing investment issues and bilateral economic opportunities.

Provincial ministers also attended the meeting. CM Shah said the Sindh government had always encouraged private enterprise and there were “vast investment opportunities” in various sectors across the province.

A ceremony was later held in honour of the Iranian president who also addressed it and “expressed his delight” at being hosted in Sindh.

Addressing the ceremony, CM Shah said: “It is a matter of pride and honour for me that today I am welcoming the president of a brotherly country, a long-time friend, sympathiser and benefactor of Pakistan,” adding that Pak-Iran relations spanned “centuries”.

“The religious, academic, cultural and economic ties between us are strong and deepening with time. Pakistan and Iran have supported each other wholeheartedly,” he said.

CM Shah said the two countries were passing through an “important period in history” where brotherhood, unity and mutual support were “essential”.

“We are facing various problems in which terrorism, illegal trade, climate change and its negative effects, increasing atrocities in Palestine and Kashmir are the top.

“Genocide of Muslims in Palestine and Kashmir is a matter of concern. In the eyes of Pakistan, a peaceful solution to the problems of Palestine and Kashmir is the most important need of the hour,” the chief minister said.

He added that Muslims should unite and support Palestinians in this difficult time.

Shah further said that Pakistan’s “firm and principled stand” was that there should be an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Palestinians should be given their rights while the problem of Kashmiris must be solved in the light of UN resolutions.

Lahore visit

Earlier today, Raisi and his delegation were received by Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz at the Allama Iqbal International Airport on the second day of his official visit.

View this post on Instagram

According to PTV News , Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akthar Zaman, Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar and Iranian consul general in Lahore Mehran Movahhedfar were among those receiving him.

Senior provincial minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed and provincial ministers Uzma Bukhari, Mujtuba Shujaur Rehman, Khawaja Sulaiman Rafiq, Bilal Yasin, and Chaudhry Shafay Hussain were also present on the occasion.

The Iranian president then paid a visit to Allama Iqbal’s mausoleum, where he laid a floral wreath and offered fateha .

Speaking on the occasion, Raisi said he did not “feel like a stranger at all”, adding that there were “special emotions and connection” with Pakistani people that kept the two nations connected.

“I wanted that a public rally be held so I could address the public but due to some reasons, the conditionalities were such that it could not be made possible,” he said.

“On behalf of the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I say my greetings to the people of Pakistan and Lahore,” Raisi said, appreciating the “revolutionary spirit” present in the people here.

The Iranian president highlighted that Allama Iqbal was an extremely important personality for Iran as he was a very inspirational person. He also praised the Pakistani people and government for the “stance taken with us (Iran) in a strong manner against Zionist forces”.

According to Radio Pakistan , Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, the khateeb of Badshahi Mosque, offered special prayers for the enhancement of Pak-Iran relations and for the Palestinians in Gaza.

Raisi penned his admiration for Allama Iqbal’s literary legacy in the visitors’ book, the report said, adding that he was also briefed on the ongoing restoration efforts at Lahore’s historical sites, particularly within the Old Walled City.

Later, Raisi met Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman at the Governor House where they discussed matters of mutual interest, Radio Pakistan reported .

Governor Rehman also hosted a luncheon in honour of the president and his delegation, the report said.

The Iranian president later held a meeting with CM Maryam where the two reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cultural exchanges and fostering people-to-people contacts, the Foreign Office said.

CM Maryam explained measures taken in the province for socio-economic development and expressed a desire for close engagement with Iranian cities and provinces for “mutual benefit and prosperity”.

Raisi will next head to Karachi , where he will meet with the provincial leadership there. He would also be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Karachi, Radio Pakistan stated .

The Punjab government and Sindh governments have announced local holidays today (Tuesday) in the Lahore district and Karachi division , respectively, to “avoid the consequent inconvenience to the general public” ahead of the visit of foreign dignitaries, including Raisi. The Sindh government has also imposed a complete ban on drones in the Karachi division from April 22 to April 28.

In a post on X in the early hours of Tuesday, Raisi said: “Due to the commonality between Iran and Pakistan, there is a significant scope for expansion and promotion of relations between the two countries.”

He conveyed his greetings to the people of Pakistan, who he said “always defended Islam, Islamic values, the oppressed Palestinians and the just and fair”.

High-level meetings on 1st day

A day ago, Raisi had spent a busy day in Islamabad, where the two sides committed to increasing the trade volume to $10 billion over the next five years.

After his arrival in the capital, he had met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and later addressed a joint press conference, vowing to strengthen relations between both countries at “high levels”.

Later, Raisi also met with President Asif Ali Zardari where they agreed to reinforce existing ties. In his meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, the Iranian president discussed regional stability and border security.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had called on Raisi as well while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Iranian counterpart Dr Ahmad Vahidi agreed on both two countries banning terrorist organisations in their respective countries.

Separately, the neighbours signed eight agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for cooperation in various fields. PM Shehbaz and Raisi also inaugurated the newly-constructed portion of Islamabad’s 11th Avenue after renaming it as Iran Avenue.

Significance of visit

Raisi’s visit to Pakistan had been in doubt as Middle East tensions rose after Iran launched an unprecedented missile and drone attack on Israel more than a week ago in retaliation for an airstrike on the Iranian consular building in Damascus earlier this month. Then, on Friday, central Iran received what was presumed to be an Israeli attack.

{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)" width="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="height:400px;position:relative" src="https://www.dawn.com/news/card/1828325" sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms">

Tehran has played down the apparent Israeli attack and indicated it had no plans for retaliation, a response that appeared gauged towards keeping the conflict in Gaza from expanding to a regionwide conflict.

Pakistan has called on all parties in the Middle East to “exercise utmost restraint and move towards de-escalation”.

Raisi’s visit is also significant as Pakistan and Iran seek to mend ties after tit-for-tat missile strikes in January. The cross-border strikes stoked regional tensions already inflamed by Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.

Tehran carried out the strikes against an anti-Iran group in Pakistan the same week it targeted Iraq and Syria. Pakistan responded with a raid on “militant targets” in Sistan-Balochistan province. Both countries have accused each other of sheltering militants in the past.

Pakistan is also counting on a joint gas project with Iran to solve a long-running power crisis that has sapped its economic growth.

A $7.5 billion Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline intended to feed Pakistani power plants was inaugurated with great fanfare in March 2013. However, the project immediately stagnated following international sanctions on Iran.

Tehran has built its own section of the 1,800-kilometre pipeline, which should eventually link its South Pars gas fields to Nawabshah.

In February, the outgoing caretaker government in Pakistan approved the construction of an 80km section of the pipeline, primarily to avoid the payment of billions of dollars in penalties to Iran due to years of delays.

Washington has warned that Pakistan could face US sanctions, saying it does not support the pipeline going forward.
