Yelagiri , or as it is affectionately called as Poor Man’s Ooty , lies in the Vellore District of Tamil Nadu. Yelagiri is situated at a height of about 1110 meters above the sea level. The area comprises of fourteen hamlets that sum together to make up Yelagiri. Since the hill-town is not as commercialised as the other hill stations of the region it still encompasses beauty in its raw form. The lush greens of the nature and the peaceful attitude of the place makes Yelagiri a splendid destination for weekend getaways. With the temperature being moderate all-round the year, Yelagiri sprawls with the green slopes, Rose gardens and orchards all along. The hill-town was found in the colonial era and is well known for its breath-taking hair pin bends that provide a captivating view. The little hill-town also let visitors indulge in activities like rock-climbing, paragliding and trekking. There are some enthralling treks that lead to beautiful destinations. Yelagiri is endowed with waterfalls, valleys, lakes, hills and temples. Wrapped quietly in the arms of four hills, the sleepy hill-town of Yelagiri is a break from the chaotic city life .

The climate in Yelagiri remains pleasant all year long. The average temperature ranges between 11 °C to 32 °C. The summers are quite hot but yet it doesn’t touch the extremes. The winter months from November to February are cooler and the warmth of the sun won’t let you fatigue. Yelagiri receives a moderate rainfall during the winter months, starting from mid-June and extending till mid-September.

The hill-town could be visited during any month of the year opting as per your favourite season. The best time to visit Yelagiri remains from October to March. Since Yelagiri is known as a trekker’s paradise, it is home to some mesmerizing treks. One can trek up to the Swamimalai Hills that is the highest point of the region and offers a panoramic view of Yelagiri. The place is laden with temples as each of the fourteen villages have Murugar temple, the local worshipped deity. One can walk till the Jalampagarai Waterfalls and enjoy the beautiful cascading sight. Punganoor Lake and Nature Park are another favourite tourist spots of Yelagiri and also offer boating facilities. The temples of Velavan and Jalamgadeeshwar are famous in the area and devotees come here in large numbers on daily basis. Also Yelagiri has a science observatory called as Vainu Bappu Observatory or the Telescope Observatory which is known to house the largest Telescope of Asia. Paragliding is another activity that is offered in Yelagiri and is famous for being the second best location for paragliding in India. Herbal farms and silk farms that are maintained by the government are also of prime attraction. Yelagiri is also famous for producing the best honey available in Tamil Nadu.

How To Reach

The best way to reach Yelagiri is by road. The hair pin bends will test your driving skills while at the same time offering the wonderful views of the greens. The nearest airport is the Bangalore Airport about 190 km away. Alternatively, one can take trains to Jolarpettai Junction, the nearest rail station. From Jolarpettai Junction one can either hire a taxi or can take a bus that runs at regular intervals.

One day trip to yelagiri

mixed feeling on the trip, to be honest there is nothing much extraordinary to see in yelagiri, crouching heat similar to Bangalore, if you are trekker can visit Swamimalai trek at the top there a is a temple, trekking is about 3.5 KM one side.

not much to see.. ..visited the punganoor lake park ,government silk farm etc.....nothing interesting in nature park also.......

Had been to this place with friends on week end. Dont expect too much from this place. Apart from one lake and sunrise nothing we found more. Adventure activities not impressed. We can get variety of fruits in local area. Really fantastic.

Yelagiri is a hill station in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, situated off the Vaniyambadi-Tirupattur road. Approx 160 KMs from B'Lore (Via Electronic city n Hosur) The road is very good. Nice place for a quick weekend getaway. It's peaceful Hill station compare to other. Good for family, friends. A couple of trekking points are interesting. The drive up and down is exciting due to the large number of hair pin Bends in a short distance. Not many Places of interest, few of them is below; 1 Punganoor Lake Park with boating 2 Nature Park 3 Jalagamparai Waterfalls: - In summer don't visit as there will be less water 4 Swami Malai Hills 5 Telescope observatory: It has now been closed There is not much scope for shopping in Yelagiri, however, what you cannot afford to miss is the home-made honey and jackfruit. Yelagiri is well-known as the best honey producer in Tamil Nadu and you may buy home-made honey or natural honey made by wild bees in the natural environment. Also you can buy best quality Cardamom (Elaichi)

We had planned for a two days trip to Yelagiri from Bangalore over the weekend. We started around 8 AM in the morning from our residence at Harlur Road, Bangalore and had breakfast at A2B restaurant before Krishnagiri. The traffic was pretty decent and we managed to keep up our speed. We reached Yelagiri around 11:30 AM. The driving experience was good as the roads are pretty decent especially the ghat section roads are well maintained. We visited a Murugan temple over there and then reached the resort "Zeenath Taj Gardens". Rooms were well maintained and the buffet lunch provided was decent. We went for a boating in the lake and then visited a natural park. Boat ride was good as it was drizzling and the park was good although not very well maintained. We had our dinner also in the resort and the food was good compared to lunch. Next day morning, we had our breakfast and spent some time in the resort. We started back to Bangalore around 12:30 PM and reached at 4 PM. Overall, the trip was good as we were totally 10 people. I suggest to visit this place in groups so that you can spend some quality time with your friends/family as Yelagiri does not have many sight seeing places. Driving directions: Bangalore -> Hosur -> Take left at Krishnagiri (Chennai Highway) -> About 35kms, take a right turn to Yelagiri (U turn beneath a flyover)

We visited this month.Very small place.No rush...nothing.We can enjoy the holiday peacefully.Templerature is 23 deg c in the day time and 10 to 12 in the night.really enjoyed the climate.No much place to go arround.You can enjoy the climate.This place is suitable only upto March.After March it would be hot.Very nearest cool hill station near Chennai.it's about 3 hrs from Chennai.

New Delhi: Yelagiri Summer Festival is an event held annually in the Yelagiri Hills, Thirupathur. Yelagiri, one of the most well-known destinations in the country for hiking and mountain climbing, hosts the annualYelagiri Summer Festival in May and June every year. A large number of people from all around the world attend the festival every year. The Yelagiri Summer Festival accentuates the rich heritage of the Yelagiri Hills. It consists of rose festival, flower festival, spice festival, dog festival, and cultural programmes. One of the most popular events of the Yelagiri Summer Festival is the Flower Show, which features a wide variety of flowers native to the Nilgiri Region. Over 250 vendors will be present, showcasing not only local blooms but also a wide choice of exotic varieties, such as Japanese flower arrangements.

According to utsav.gov.in, Yelagiri Summer Festival will be held from May 31 to June 6 this year. The festival will remain open from 9 am to 6 pm.

People visiting the Yelagiri Summer Festival should note that there is no entry fee.
