Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
  • Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
  • Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
  • Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
  • Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.

If you haven’t already, read the  Australia Visa Guide  to familiarize yourself with Australian tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility and entry procedures at the border.

Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600, Tourist Stream) Sample

Visitor visa validity

The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. For example, most Indian passport holders get a 3-year valid Australian visa, whereas Phillippine passport holders get a 1-year valid visa. Pakistan nationals get a 6-month validity.

You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.

Duration of stay

Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.

Allowed number of entries

Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.

When to apply

Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.

Visa extension

Australia Visitor visa is non-extendable . If you need to  extend your stay in Australia , you are allowed to apply for another Visitor Visa (onshore) from within the country.

You must complete the biometrics procedure within 14 days of getting this email otherwise your application becomes void without a refund!

AABCs are typically managed by VFS Global. They charge a service fee for biometric collection. This fee depends on AABC and the country you are applying from.

For example, the biometric service at AABC in Dubai, UAE is AED 109.17. The biometric service fee at AABC in Manila, Philippines is PHP 557.

If you can’t make an appointment, you can reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours before your scheduled appointment date and time. You can reschedule up to 2 times.

What if you miss your appointment?

If you miss your scheduled appointment, you will lose the fee paid as the biometric fee is nonrefundable. You will also have to wait 24 hours to schedule a new appointment.

How to track status

You will receive the status of your application in your email. You can also track the status of the visa in your ImmiAccount.

How to download approved visa

When your Visitor Visa is approved, you will receive a grant letter in your email from Home Affairs. The grant letter is your Visitor Visa.

The Visitor visa is electronically linked to your passport, so you don’t need to download or print your Visitor Visa.

If you’re ever asked to show any proof, you can use the Grant Notification you received in your email. You can also download it from your ImmiAccount under “Visa Grant Details”.

How to check the validity of your Visitor Visa

The expiration date of your Australia eVisitor visa is indicated as “Must not arrive after” on the visa letter. If you lost your grant letter or don’t have a copy of your Visitor Visa, you can check the validity details on the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) portal by using either your Visa Grant Number or Transaction Reference Number.

Planning a trip to Australia ? Whether you’re heading Down Under for a short break or extended working holiday, you’ll likely need a visa.

Here’s your complete guide to filling out your paperwork for a visit to Australia.

Do I need a visa for Australia?

Most visitors to Australia will need a visa, but the type of visa you apply for depends on your country of origin, how long you plan to stay in Australia and what you plan to do while you’re there.

Most tourists must apply for either an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or a visitor visa before traveling. The exception is New Zealand passport holders, who are issued a Special Category visa upon arrival.

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your intended stay. You’ll also need to ensure you have sufficient funds to cover your stay. Depending on your visa category, you may be asked for proof of this upon arrival.

What type of visa do I need to travel to Australia?

The Australian Department of Home Affairs’ (DoHA) visa finder can help you determine what visas you’re eligible for based on your citizenship, your travel purpose and your intended length of stay.

Here are the three main tourist visa categories:

For visitors from visa-exempt countries: ETA (subclass 601)

If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country – including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or Singapore – you’re eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) . With an ETA you can visit Australia as many times as you like for tourism purposes within a one-year window, staying for up to three months per visit.

Attached digitally to your passport number, an ETA allows for a simplified entry process into Australia. An application needs to be completed via the dedicated ETA app before you arrive and usually is processed within a day. However, it’s recommended that you apply for it a few days in advance to ensure you have the ETA in time for your departure.

While ETAs are free, there is an application service charge of $20.

If you’re already in Australia and you want to extend your stay, you will need to apply for a Visitor visa.

For visitors from European countries: eVisitor visa (subclass 651)

The eVisitor visa is free and available for passport holders from most European countries. It offers similar conditions to an ETA: Visitors can stay for up to three months for tourism purposes. It’s valid for 12 months, with multiple entries permitted.

You can apply for the eVisitor online. Processing time is usually within a day, but it’s recommended that you apply well in advance of your intended travel date in case of delays. This visa can’t be extended, so if you wish to stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a Visitor visa.

If you hold a passport from a country that’s eligible for both an ETA and an eVisitor visa, you’ll find the two options are nearly identical. The main difference is how you apply for them: ETAs must be applied for through an app with a fee of $20. There is no charge for eVisitor visas, but you’ll need to register for an ImmiAccount and apply online through a web browser.

For all other tourists: Visitor visa (subclass 600)

If you’re not eligible for an ETA or an eVisa and plan to visit Australia for tourism-related purposes, you’ll need to apply for a Visitor visa from outside Australia. This visa may be granted for up to 12 months and may be single or multiple entry. Conditions are determined on a case-by-case basis. A visitor visa starts at $190, but there may be other associated costs including health examinations, police clearances or biometrics, depending on your passport.

Although most visitor visas are processed within a few weeks, it can take longer in peak periods, so it must be applied for well in advance of your trip. Standard processing times change regularly and can be monitored on the DoHA site.

Once you apply, you can track your application through your ImmiAccount. You may be required to submit additional information, so check your application regularly to provide any further details to keep the process moving.

How do I extend my visa to Australia?

Enjoying your stay in Australia and don't want to leave? We don’t blame you.

Depending on your visa, you may be able to apply for a new visa to stay in the country longer. Visitors who are already inside Australia and wish to stay longer as tourists may use the onshore Visitor visa (also subclass 600) to extend their stay.

Make sure you apply for your new visa before your current visa expires. If you’ve submitted your application before your current visa expires, you’ll be granted a free bridging visa until your new one is processed.

What if I want to work and travel around Australia?

Working holidays are a popular option for travelers who want to fund their adventures and immerse themselves in Australian life and culture.

Australia’s Working Holiday Maker program is available for visitors between the ages of 18 and 30 (and up to 35 in some cases) from 40 participating countries and jurisdictions around the world.

There are two classes of visas available under this program: t he Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) and the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) . Which one you apply for depends on the passport you hold. Both are valid for 12 months and cost $635, and both enable you to legally work while in Australia.

Many working holiday visa makers find that one year isn’t enough. Fortunately, you may be able to extend your working holiday visa for a second or even a third year. In order to do so, you’ll need to complete “specified work” in a “regional area” for a period of three months (for a second year) or six months (for a third year) first.

This specified work is usually referred to as “farm work” in backpacker circles, but it’s a bit of a misnomer. It’s a common misconception that you need to head to the woop-woops (that Aussie for “middle of nowhere”) and pick fruit to complete your specified work. In fact, there are a range of approved industries the program , including tourism and hospitality, construction and bushfire recovery. Likewise, “regional areas” aren’t just found in remote rural areas; some major cities (including Darwin and Adelaide) are eligible post codes. So while you might find yourself harvesting bananas in a tiny town in tropical Queensland, you could just as easily find yourself serving tables at a luxury lodge in Darwin or working in a winery in the Barossa.

For more information on the working holiday visa program, you can also visit Tourism Australia’s dedicated portal.

You might not need to apply for a visa to travel to Australia if you hold an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travel Card (ABTC). We consider you to have applied for a Visitor visa when you applied for the ABTC.

ABTC holders (other than New Zealanders) might be granted a Visitor (subclass 600) Business Visitor stream visa to visit Australia.  If you hold an ABTC with ‘AUS’ printed on the back, you can enter Australia for short-stay business visitor or tourism activities for as long as the ABTC is valid. The ABTC is valid for 5 years from the date we issue it.

If you apply for and are granted a separate visa, the visa associated with your ABTC will cease.

Visitor visas

Find the best way to get a visitor visa for your next holiday or business trip to australia..

Electronic Travel Authority visa (ETA)

Visitor visa (subclass 600), evisitor visa (subclass 651), what other visitor visas are available, what are the requirements for an australian visitor visa, how long do visas take to process, do i need a migration agent.

Unless you are an Australian citizen or a New Zealand passport holder, you will need to apply for a visa before visiting Australia for a holiday, business or short-term trip. Most visitors enter Australia on one of three visitor visas:

  • Electronic Travel Authority

This page will explain the various visa types for visitors and tell you how to apply for them.

An Electronic Travel Authority allows applicants living outside Australia to visit the country for tourism or business. Travellers on an ETA visa are permitted to stay in Australia for a maximum of three months. The following conditions apply:

  • Applicants must apply for the ETA online through the Australian government’s website .
  • ETA visas cost $20. Applicants must pay by credit card.
  • Yes. Every traveller must apply for their own ETA, including young children.

The visitor visa is a more flexible visa for visitors on short-term tourist and business trips. Eligible visitors can apply from inside and outside Australia, depending on the passport they hold. This visa:

  • Applicant must apply for the visitor visa online through the Australian government's website .
  • Costs between $145 and $1,065 depending on the trip length.
  • Allows visitors to stay for between 3 and 12 months.

How is a visitor visa different from an ETA?

  • The visitor visa has more flexible conditions for visitors, including length of trip and visa costs.
  • Passport holders of some countries may be eligible for an ETA but not for a visitor visa, or vice versa.
  • The visitor visa is also used by travellers from the People’s Republic of China on registered group tours.

The eVisitor visa is similar to the ETA. Applicants must be outside Australia when they apply online. Like the ETA, the eVisitor visa allows for visits of up to three months. This visa, unlike the ETA, is free.

Who can apply for an eVisitor visa?

  • Visitors from 36 European countries, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, can apply for eVisitor visas.
  • You must apply for this visa from outside Australia.
  • Applicants must apply for the ETA online through the Australian government's website .

Visitor visas summary

If you are unsure of what type of visitor visa you will require, you can visit the Australian immigration website for more details. Alternatively you can seek the advice of an authorised migration agent who will be able to advise you on the best visa for your situation.

There are a few other visitor visa options available. Most of the options will depend on which passport you hold as well as the purpose of your visit.

You can read more about working holiday visas in our work visa guide .

The requirements for an Australian visitor visa will depend on why you are planning to visit and how long you wish to stay. In all cases you must have a valid passport or travel document from an eligible country.

You should also consider the following:

  • If you are visiting for medical reasons, you will need documents from medical professionals regarding the reasons for your treatments.
  • Any visitor to Australia must be able to prove they are of good character to enter the country.
  • For all visa applications, any official documents you are required to provide (such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, proof of identity, etc.) will need to be certified by legal agencies of the country you live in and translated into English.
  • In some cases you may need to prove your good character by providing a police clearance certificate or other evidence.

Visa processing times are dependent on the type of visitor visa you are applying for and your personal circumstances, such as your citizenship. Some visas may be processed on the same day; other visas will take up to two months. It is very important that you always ensure that you allow plenty of time for your visa to be processed before travelling.

You don’t need a migration agent to make a visitor visa application but an agent may be helpful in navigating the application process. A migration agent can advise on the right type of visa for you as well as ensuring you provide the correct documentation, which allows for a much smoother application.

Hope this helps!

Hello. I want to visitor visa for my family. only 15 days. My real younger brother family is a citizenship holder I am 41 years old. Which documents are needed from my family to apply for Visitor Visa and fees?

Thanks for your comment and I hope you are well.

As your family will only visit for 15 days, your family can get a Visitor visa (subclass 600). As it says above, this visa is good for short term trips. Their eligibility will depend on the passport they hold. The costs is between $135 and $1,000 depending on the trip length and will be determined upon the actual visa application.

I hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.

Best, Nikki

My father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law wish to visit us in Australia under family sponsored short term (3 months) visiting visa in January 2020. Do they need to lodge 3 separate 1418 forms? Will the visa fee be 3*$135?

Hi Gitanjali,

Thanks for your comment and I hope you are doing well. It’s great to know that you’re family is visiting!

They would need to lodge separate 1418 forms which means they would pay $135 each. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.

My second cousin has recently been granted tourist visa 600 from October 2019 for 3 moths stay with multiple entries. She financially supports herself but staying at my place in Oz. Can my mum still apply for a visitor visa to visit me as well?

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

Yes, your mum can still apply for the visitor visa to visit you in Australia.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Jeni

I’m a guarantor for a visitors visa Can I cancel guarantee if I want too

Thanks for your message. I wish I could help you further however, the information on our page is limited regarding guarantor for a visitor visa. While we review visitor visas in our pages, it’s helpful to know that we don’t work with the Australian Embassy. It would be best to contact them directly for further assistance. You can find their contact details when you visit their website.

Hope this clarifies and we hope they find a quick resolution for you!

Visa Requirements for Australia

1 month tourist visa australia

The most common visa for visiting Australia as a tourist is an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). This allows most foreigners to stay in the country for three months at a time, as often as they'd like within a 12-month period. Some travelers can avoid the $15 service charge of the ETA by getting an eVisitor visa instead. This is granted only to those whose countries have strong ties to Australia, and takes longer to process. Other short-term visas include the standard visitor visa (available for up to one year) and working holiday visas, which are designed to let young tourists work temporary jobs while they travel. People from New Zealand don't need any kind of visa to visit their island neighbor.

As for longer-term stays, Australia offers visas for students and workers, as well as permanent resident visas to sponsored employees and family members.

Electronic Travel Authority

Most tourists—except those from New Zealand and who qualify for the eVisitor visa—must obtain an Electronic Travel Authority, better known as an ETA, to visit Australia for up to three months. Designed for those who do not meet the requirements of the eVisitor visa (which is only available to nationals of European countries), this is the most common tourist visa, available to citizens of the U.S., Canada, U.K., and the 30 other countries listed on the Australian Government website .

Visa Fees and Application

The ETA (subclass 601) is valid for tourism or business travel (including cruise ship stopovers) for up to three months, as often as desired within a 12-month period.

  • Applicants must have a valid passport from an eligible country, meet the health requirements of the Australian Government , and intend only to stay in the country temporarily.
  • The ETA itself is free, but the service charge is about $15 (AUD 20)
  • It must be applied for outside of Australia and can be submitted online .
  • ETAs can't be extended. In order to stay longer, you must apply for another ETA or a different visa .
  • ETA applications can be submitted anywhere from a couple of days to a year in advance of your trip. Allow 72 hours for processing, but in most cases, you'll receive a response within minutes.

eVisitor Visa

More than 30 European countries, including France, Italy, the UK, Germany, Spain, and the Scandinavian nations qualify for the eVisitor visa (subclass 651)—essentially a free version of the ETA. Like the ETA, an eVisitor visa is valid for unlimited business or leisure stays of up to three months within a 12-month period. It can also be used for short-term study and training.

One major reason to apply for an ETA instead of an eVisitor visa is because of the processing time.

  • In order to qualify, applicants must hold a valid passport from one of the qualifying countries and must not have tuberculosis or a criminal conviction.
  • The eVisitor visa is fully free. No application fees or service charges are required.
  • It must be applied for outside of Australia and can be submitted online.
  • Whereas ETAs are typically processed on the same day, eVisitor visas can take anywhere between three days and several months to process. According to the Australian Government, 90 percent of applications are processed within nine months . It's best to apply for it a year in advance of your trip.
  • The eVisitor visa can't be extended.

Visitor Visa

The standard visitor visa (subclass 600) is a more comprehensive version of the ETA and eVisitor visas. It can be granted for three, six, or 12 months at a time, as opposed to just three . It's good for frequent visits and longer stays on the basis of travel, family, or business.

The requirements and cost of the visitor visa—also called a "tourist stream"—varies by circumstance.

  • Business visitors will only be granted three-month stays on the tourist stream, but family members may be granted 12 months.
  • In order to apply, you must have a valid passport, enough funds to cover your trip, and an intention to leave Australia after the visa expires.
  • The cost of the visa varies: Applying from Australia costs AUD 365 ($260), applying from outside of Australia costs AUD 145 ($100), applying for business or to visit family costs $100, and applying for the frequent traveler stream (meaning you can get unlimited three-months visits within a 10-year period) costs AUD 1065 ($760).
  • In some cases, sponsors (i.e. family members) may be asked to pay an additional security bond.
  • Processing can take from 10 days to four months.

Student Visa

Australia's student visa (subclass 500) is granted to people aged six and older for up to five years, depending on your enrollment . Applicants must provide proof of acceptance into an Australian course of study, hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) unless you fall into an exemption category, and provide what's called a " welfare arrangement " (either a legal guardian who has a visa to stay in Australia for the duration of your studies or arrangements with your school) if you're under 18. The student visa costs AUD 620 ($445) and can be applied for online while in or out of Australia. It also covers any family members who come with you and allows students to work up to 40 hours per week while studying. It can take anywhere between one and four months for processing, depending on the circumstance. Student visas do not qualify for extensions. In order to stay for longer, students must apply for another student visa.

There are several different Australian visas on offer for prospective workers. Whereas the visitor visa allows non-citizens to stay in the country for three months on the premise of business, it doesn't allow you to earn a wage from an Australian institution like its work visas do. The three primary options are a working holiday visa, designed for travelers between the ages of 18 and 30 (35 for Canadian, French, and Irish nationals) to holiday and work in Australia for 12 months , a temporary work visa for skilled workers , and a permanent work visa, which requires employer sponsorship and grants permanent resident status in Australia .

Only passport holders from the more-than-40 eligible countries (including the U.S., Canada, the UK, the EU, Japan, South Korea, Scandinavian countries, and others) qualify for the working holiday scheme. Each country is offered a certain number of slots, so applications are picked randomly from a pool.

Family Visas

Family visas are granted to partners, parents, children, and grandparents of Australian citizens and residents. There are more than 20 different types of family visas, from adoption visas to carer and remaining relative visas, and each of them has its own price and set of requirements.

For couples, the partner visa costs around $5,500 and requires proof of the relationship . It must be applied for from within Australia and can take up to two years to process. The permanent visa offered to parents of Australian residents and citizens costs slightly less, $4,600, and must be applied for from outside Australia . The Australian Government does not give processing times for the parent visa because of the possibility of capping and queueing.

Transit Visa

The transit visa (subclass 771) is good for short stopovers of up to 72 hours. It's free, can be applied for easily online , and requires only a confirmed booking and a valid visa. Travelers must apply and be granted the transit visa from outside of Australia before being allowed into the country. Some travelers—from a list of countries including the U.S., the U.K., much of the EU, United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Japan, and parts of South America—do not require a transit visa to travel through Australia. The visa can take between four and 15 days to process .

Visa Overstays

According to the Australian Government, visa overstayers may be faced with detainment or removal from Australia, and may also be billed for the cost of said removal . If you are discovered to have not held a valid visa upon leaving Australia, the government can also refuse to grant you a visa for up to three years.

Extending Your Visa

ETAs, eVisitor visas, and standard visitor visas are not able to be extended, but in most cases, you can re-apply for the same visa (for another fee). In the case of working holiday visas, a second and third visa (each valid for one year) may be granted to those who meet the requirements of farm work within the country .

If you find that your visa has expired or is about to expire, you can also apply for a Bridging visa E (BVE) —an extension alternative. The BVE is free and allows you to stay lawfully and temporarily in Australia while you arrange for travel out of the country or wait for another visa to process .

Visitor Visa: A Guide To Visitor Visa Subclass 600 For Australia [Update March 2023]

Nilesh Nandan · October 23, 2023 · 38 Comments

On This Page...

What Is A Subclass 600 Visitor Visa?

Subclass 600 is a visa that permits you to visit Australia as a tourist, to see family and friends or for business purposes on a temporary basis.

How Long Does A 600 Visitor Visa Last?

Grant periods are usually three, six or twelve months.

How Long Does It Take To Process A 600 Visa?

Processing times vary depending on which stream you are applying for, ranging from 16 Days to up to 5 months.

How Much Does A Subclass 600 Visa Cost?

The application fee for a subclass 600 visitor visa ranges from AUD$145 to AUD$1065. This depends on the stream that you are applying for.

If you are a passport holder of the following countries, you are eligible to apply for the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)  online  with a charge of AUD$20:

  • Brunei – Darussalam
  • Hong Kong (SAR PRC)
  • Korea, Rep of (South)
  • United States

If you are a citizen of the countries below and you hold a valid passport, you may be eligible to apply for an eVisitor visa (subclass 651) through your  Immi Account  for free:

Countires that are eligible to apply for an eVisitor visa subclass 651 Nilesh Nandan Immigration Lawyer

Which stream should I apply to?

There are 5 different streams for visitor visas:

Tourist stream

For the tourist stream, you can apply inside or outside Australia. However, if you are in Australia and you would like to lodge a visitor visa application, you must not have the dreaded ”  8503 No Further Stay  ” condition attached to your visa grant. Recently processing time is 3 months give or take 1 month.

Sponsored family stream

If you have a relative who is at least 18 years old and he or she is an Australian permanent resident or citizen, then you might be able to apply for a visitor visa under the sponsored family stream. Normal processing time for a family-sponsored visitor visa is 4 months plus or take 1 month.

Business visitor stream

This stream will suit you if you are currently outside Australia, and you plan to visit Australia for business purposes for a short time for business meetings but not actually to “work” in Australia. The normal processing time for this stream is typically shorter than the others. You will be required to provide evidence of your trip, this may include but is not limited to:

  • an invitation from a host organisation
  • conference registration details
  • a letter from your employer stating why you are visiting
  • your plans for your stay and details of your Australian business contacts
  • proof of your current employment and professional qualifications
  • evidence your company is an active business, such as an annual report
  • evidence of prior contact with Australian businesses

You can apply to fast-track your application under this stream if you are a citizen of China (Mainland), United Arab Emirates or India with an extra cost of AUD$1000. The fast track cannot be applied for online, you can check the  Immigration partner institution  for this service.

Approved destination status stream

This stream is for people who plan to travel as part of a group for a temporary short period of stay in Australia. Your travel agent can apply for this on your behalf. Please contact your local overseas-based travel agent for further assistance.

If you are a travel agent who is looking for assistance in applying for this visa stream for your client, and you need the help of an immigration lawyer, you can book a consultation with me to discuss this further.

Frequent traveller stream

If you are a passport holder of China (Mainland) who travels often to Australia for business or personal reasons, you may consider the frequent traveller stream which can be granted for up to 10 years with a stay of up to 3 months for each time you enter.

Health and character concerns?

Do you have  health issues ? Or do you have a criminal record that you are worried that Immigration might refuse your visitor visa application? Talk to me today. Book a consultation , and together we can decide what you should do next.

How do I apply for a tourist visa to Australia?

Visitor visas can be applied for online through an online portal called the  Immi Account  without any assistance and in most cases, you do not need the assistance of a  migration lawyer   like me .

You should understand that a visitor visa can be applied for in most cases outside of Australia (offshore) but also in limited cases when you are already inside Australia (onshore).

For a discussion about making an application for a visitor visa to enter Australia or for making a further visitor visa application or visitor visa extension whilst onshore, please  book a chat  with me to discuss your options.

How much money do you need in the bank?

To apply for a visitor visa, you need to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be a  genuine temporary entrant
  • Have adequate means of support
  • Meet the Australia  Public Interest Criteria
  • Meet special return criteria

There is no specific amount of money that is required when you apply for a visitor visa. The case officer may seek evidence including, but not limited to:

  • bank statements and/or passbooks showing a consistent history of saving
  • letters from banks and/or other financial institutions concerning the financial position of the applicant or the applicant’s access to the funds of another person
  • air tickets that have already been purchased
  • available credit card funds.

Please note, cash and traveller’s cheques are not considered acceptable evidence of funds. You’ll need to prove that you “own” such funds. That’s awkward!

If you are invited by a family or friend, and they will cover the expenses for your stay, generally the person offering the support should confirm their offer, in writing.

You can  book a consultation with me to discuss how I can help you put a better visitor visa submission.

Your Experience?

Please share your comments with me.

I’d love to know more  about your experience with applying for this visa subclass!

Thank you very much for your question. Here are the first three (3) things that come to my mind in relation to your post. There may also be other important issues which arise from your particular circumstances and you should seek specific immigration law advice before taking any further steps. It could be that I misunderstood you.

1. To access the current processing times for a given visa type visit this site https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-processing-times/global-visa-processing-times . Remember it keeps changing.

2. Check that you have uploaded necessary supporting material.

3. I wonder whether you have travelled previously to Australia on a visitor Visa. Make sure that your expectation level is appropriate and that you have clearly demonstrated that you will return after your period of stay in Australia.

I got refused on my 408 visa as I haven’t uploaded my police check. (I am 100% sure I did but I can’t find the document in the application) i am not sure if I could win the aat. I was on bridging visa a and now I have 35 days to leave the country, or to get another visa. Will it be possible to apply for a onshore visitor/tourist visa?

I’ll prefer to be able to apply for the covid visa again but I’m not sure if that willl be possible?

Hi we have applied for a visitor visa 600 for my son’s Filipino girlfriend. We did apply while we were on holiday in the Philippines and we also git the Biometric scan done in Manila. I’ve also attached a letter stating that my son’s girlfriend will be staying with us and she will also have travel insurance. I am just wondering about the wait time? Is it because she is from the Philippines that the application takes much longer??? Also when the visa is approved and maybe only 3 month’s at a time? Would she need to leave the country and come back to get another 3 month’s? Or can we apply for extension?

Hi, I have applied for my mother’s tourist visa – 600 from Fiji. Last updated on 08/07. All the documents uploaded, biometrics & medical completed as well in May/July. Immi account is still showing further assessment. How long does it take usually? Or is there anything I can do about it?

She has been to Australia few times in the past. However, during her last stay, she over stayed 1 day as I completely forgot to reapply. We hired the migration lawyer who applied for the visa (on-shore) and got approved for 3 months. She went back to Fiji and reapplied in June’22 and since then no update.

Please assist. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Nilesh I submitted a visitor visa for my mum to visit. I put in the application on the 27th of June, had the biometrics and health checks done in her home country and I acknowledged that we had provided all the information sought after she went for both the biometrics and health checks. But all it says on the the application home page is further assessment and it still displays the “arrange biometrics collection”. It approaching the maximum processing time frame of 37 days and we not heard anything back from them. Is this normal, for them to take such a long time to process visitor visas. She was granted one pre covid once we submitted all the requested documents. I am not sure what we can do at this stage. She can’t travel alone and we had hoped that she will get the visa in time to travel with my sister who has gotten her visa and will be travelling down on the 26th. Any advise is appreciated.

August 7, 2022 at 8:19 pm

Please contact me if you are still waiting for a response after a few days of having provided the additional material. Unfortunately it can be that your case has been handed to another person or added to another persons work queue And delays of several months are not uncommon.

I know this must be frustrating for you. Once you get it is not uncommon.

Hi, thanks for the informative website. My husband has applied for a tourist visa on 9th April and its well over 37 days at this point. Hi, I have a small concern. I applied for a tourist visa as a friend back in March 2022 from UAE. However, I had done biometrics and health examinations. The health examinations have been cleared, but there is still a flag indicating “arrange biometrics collection”, with the overall status as “Further assessment” When we contacted the Department of Home Affairs, they informed us that there has been a technical issue. But this issue has been going on for a few months. We are in two minds if we should reapply the application again. Is there something we can do re-submit the biometrics? They have now increased the global processing time for 90% of the applications to 20 months.

HI Nilesh Nandan,

You are doing a great job.

Can I ask one question? Can we apply for a Partner visa while the partner is in Australia on a Visit visa SC 600?

Does she get a bridging visa?

May 9, 2022 at 12:08 pm

1. yes. 2. yes.

I’m assuming that there is no condition on the Visa which suggests “No further stay”. If such a condition does attach to the Visitor Visa held in an application will need to be made for a waiver of that prohibition.

I can help with making submissions in respect of the waiver in certain circumstances.

Hope this helps. Please help me answer more questions like these by leaving an honest review here: https://g.page/r/CfBw8UcKreaaEAg/review

I would like to know, Does DUI conviction (First Offence , NZD $800 fine only in New Zealand) prevent to obtain Visitor visa to Australia? with Nepalese Passport? & as I am Nepalese passport holder, am I eligible to apply (Fast-Track processing)? I opt your team to apply my visa Asap.

May 5, 2022 at 10:22 am

Certainly would be easier if you did not have any drink driving charge at all. I do not believe the charge is photo of particularly in circumstances where it was only a fine. I am more concerned about the fact that you are the holder of a Nepali passport and whether or not you will meet the requirements to be a genuine temporary entrant. This involves looking at the factors pulling you back to Nepal after your temporary stay on the one hand and potential motivation for you to stay in Australia and overstay your Visa on the other hand. Your employment and social ties could particularly impact this as well your immigration history not just with Australia but with other countries.

August 29, 2021 at 2:10 pm

If you’re asking whether or not immigration has ceased processing applications for visitor visas to enter Australia, I’m not aware of any cessation in processing.

The difficulty of course is in obtaining a travel exemption in respect of crossing Australian borders even if a visitor visa is held.

Informative article so I thought I would share my experience with subclass 600 visa. I am a NZer who was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment in 2005. My application for a visitor visa has been sitting under further assessment for the past 3 months they have not asked for any further information nor have they notified if it has been sent to the character assessment (VACCU). I have had two previous such visas granted; the first one took 9 months for a decision to be made and was granted for 1 years. The 2nd was a 2year visa that took just 2 weeks to process after application. I am at a loss at the current delay as my circumstances are unchained e.g. no further convictions, same employer/residence for past 10 years

May 29, 2021 at 6:11 am

I don’t know why the delay this time.

The discretion applied by a decision maker is unique to that decision maker.

Reasonable minds may differ on each exercise of the discretion.

Additionally, guidelines and policies may change from time to time. This may require a different consideration or a different weighting to be given to the the nature and seriousness of the particular offending or the present likelihood of re-offending.

In short, unfortunately, just because you were granted previously, it does not necessarily follow that you’ll be granted again.

Does that help?

Thanks for the insights.I also have a query, I applied for a Visitor visa (family visit) 600 ( paid AUD 145)a month back on 26th April 2022. Since, my brother is on a PR, I thought this would be the fastest visa to get. However, till date status on immi showing only application received. What could be the reasons, was it better to apply for Tourist visa instead & can I do anything further to expedite the visa processing. I was planning to travel in June 1st week. I am seriously not sure what went wrong.

Tourist visa to Australia for US Citizens

Key aspects.

Cheapest and fastest visa for touristic purposes.

Visa Duration

12 months total, up to 90 days each visit .

Approval time

95% of tourist visas are granted within 24 hours .

If you are planning a visit to Australia for holiday, as a US citizen you will need an Australian tourist visa (also known as “Australian vacation visa”) .

A tourist visa for Australia is technically type of ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) visa: a visa that you simply apply for online without having to fill in a paper form or send in your passport to any embassy. This is why a touristic ETA permit is sometimes referred to also as “electronic tourist visa” or “e-tourist” visa : filling the Australian tourist visa form directly online is all there is to do .

To be able to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa you must be travelling to Australia for holiday or for visiting friends or family, and hold a valid passport.

Types of Australian Tourist Visas (Alternatives to Australian Touristic ETA)

Re-entry, renewal and extension of australian tourist visas, working in australia with a tourist visa, getting married in australia on a tourist visa, australian tourist visa: costs and fees, tourist visas for australia available to american citizens.

A standard Australian tourist visa ( Electronic Travel Authorization ) authorizes visits of up to three months at a time and is valid for 12 months after the date of issue. Unlike traditional visas, there are no paper applications to complete, and you will have no visa labels or stamps in your passport. Instead, your tourist visa for Australia will be electronically attached to your passport.

United States’ citizens can apply for a tourist visa to Australia using their passport , and the passport number will then be linked to the visa. If you lose your passport or it is stolen before you enter Australia, you will need to re-apply for a new vacation visa.

Apart from the standard ETA tourism visa, there are a few more specific tourist visa types one can request in order to travel to Australia as a tourist: if you feel an ETA does not satisfy your needs, you will need to determine the most appropriate visa for you among other visa options.

The most common short-stay tourist visa types for Australia are:

  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) – formally known as Australian Visa Subclass 601
  • Work and Holiday Visa – formally known as Australian Visa Subclass 462
  • Tourist stream – formally known as Australian Visa Subclass 600

Online Tourist Visa for Australia (ETA e-Tourist)

An e-tourist visa, which is also called an ETA, is a subclass 601 visa . You can use this visa to tour Australia, visit family or friends or study or train for short-term. Business visitors can also use this visa for short-term. An ETA tourist visa is a temporary visa that is valid for 12 months from the date of issue, and it is a multiple entry visa. For each entry, you can stay up to 3 months.

You can enter and leave as many times as you want as long as it is valid. However, the ETA cannot be extended: you must get another Australian tourist visa if you want to extend your holiday or stay longer for other reasons. U.S. passport holders who are planning trips shorter than 90 days are almost always immediately eligible for electronic tourist visas (ETAs) , which will be electronically matched to the traveler’s passport in the Australian immigration official databases.

More info on Online Tourist Visas for Australia (ETA) – updated for 2024:

  • Both passport holders and travel agents can apply for ETAs.
  • Overstaying a short stay tourist visa in Australia could lead to exclusion, detention and removal. If you plan to stay in Australia longer than 3 months per entry, please make sure you apply instead for the Long Term visa, subclass 600.
  • Once you have your online tourist visa for Australia, you can use your e-passport at the SmartGate system when you arrive in Australia.

If you are not sure what tourist visa to apply for, we recommend you apply for this kind of visa .

Tourist Stream (Subclass 600)

The Tourist Stream visa is an alternative to the ETA tourist visa, but typically slower . Getting this holiday visa for Australia, you can visit family and friends, travel the country, and study or train for up to 3 months. This visa may be valid for between three months and 12 months, and you can request it for single entry or multiple entries. You can enter and leave as often as you want as long as the Tourist Stream is valid, but you may not stay more than 12 months during 18 months. This visa is also typically more expensive than an ETA and takes longer to process . Also, immigration office can request more documents from the applicant, for example a scanned copy of passport ID page or bank statement. Australian Tourist Visa for US Citizens: How to Apply

U.S. citizens need visas to travel to Australia. An Australian tourist visa requested from the USA via Electronic Travel Authorization will allow you to enter Australia for up to 90 days at a time for a year from the date of issue. After the first visit, subsequent visits are at the immigration officer’s discretion.

Getting a Tourist Visa to Australia from the USA

In order to get a tourist visa to Australia from USA you must have a valid passport (valid for at least 6 months upon entering Australia in order to comply with the requirements of most airlines flying to Australia – even though not strictly required by Australian Immigration Office) and obtain your US tourist visa to Australia before arriving in the country.

You may also need to complete a medical exam depending on your condition (any medical requirement – if needed – will be specified during the online application process). Visitors may also need to provide financial information upon request to receive their tourist visa. Also in this case, any requirement – if needed – will be specified during the online application process .

It is easy to apply for a tourist visa to Australia from the USA online: simply choose the right visa for your needs and follow the instructions on-screen. Most visa requests are processed and approved instantly .

Australian Tourist Visa Requirements for Americans

The conditions and eligibility for visas can vary based on the type of visa. Most U.S. citizens are eligible for ETAs as long as they hold valid passports.

US Passport Validity and Photo Requirements

We strongly recommend that your US passport be valid for at least 6 months upon entering Australia . This is why if your passport is due to expire soon or during the time you will be travelling, you may need to get a new passport before applying. Australian tourist visa photo requirements are similar to passport photos. Please ensure your photos are accurate and current.

Documents Required to US Citizens for an Australian Tourist Visa

The document checklist can vary based on the type of visa requested: with an ETA, you will only need your passport, and the ETA permit will be electronically attached to your passport.

For other visa types, you may be asked for other identification, including the biographical pages of your passport, travel documents and the IDs of your fellow travelers. Other required documents may be requested if authorities are not satisfied as to your identity.

Funds Required for an Australian Tourist Visa

When travelling to Australia, you may be required to show proof of funds. This can include displaying a minimum bank balance on your bank statement, audits, taxation records or other proof of satisfactory employment and income. After the application is processed, in the rare case a bank statement is required by Australian Immigration in order to verify your bank balance, an immigration officer will contact you .

Medical Requirements for an Australian Travel Visa

If you are applying for a non-ETA Australian visa and plan on staying in Australia for more than 6 months, you might be required to complete a health check and a chest X-ray. This can extend your visa application process up to 20 days. You are more likely to be required to complete a medical test if you are from a high-risk area or are over 75. In these cases, Yellow Fever is the only vaccination requirement.

Australian Tourist Visa Age Limits for American Citizens

For US passport holders willing to travel from USA to Australia there is no age limit on tourist visas . Of course, anyone who is travelling to Australia without an Australian passport will need a visa on arrival – and for a child under 18, the ETA will be based on the child’s passport. This means children will need separate ETAs, using details from their passports (children who are on their parents’ passports also need their own ETAs, but the information from their parents’ passport will be used).

Process and Processing Time for Australian Tourist Visas

Visa processing time for an australian eta tourist visa (subclass 601).

The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is the most commonly used Australian Tourist Visa. The process can be completed online and requires no extra application forms, no visa labels and no passport stamps.

To be eligible for and maintain your instant Australian tourist visa, you must abide by specific conditions, including – in order:

  • Being free of criminal convictions
  • Passing a health check as required
  • Departing within the required time period
  • Not working during your time in Australia
  • Not engaging in study or training for more than three months

In general, the Australian tourist visa processing time for a Tourist Stream Visa (Subclass 600) can take from 48 hours to more than a month . A Tourist ETA though – which is the most common type of tourist visa – has a much lower estimated waiting time, as it is much faster to process. An ETA e-visa for tourists can often be requested and issued just days before your planned visit . It is a 100 percent secure, paperless process, and the visa will be electronically linked to your passport just moments after it has been issued.

However, we always recommend to request your Touristic ETA Visa at least a few weeks before departure , to avoid any risk. Don’t worry though – with an ETA, you can also track your application online via an online tracking system.

Australian Tourist Stream Visa (Subclass 600) Processing Time

The amount of time taken for an Australian tourist visa to be processed can vary based on how promptly you supply the supporting documents, your response to requests for further information, how long it takes to verify your information and peak processing times.

Also, the Australia tourist visa process is quite straightforward:

  • Check that your current U.S. passport is valid.
  • Apply for your visa.
  • Wait for verification of receipt.
  • Wait for notification of your status.

If the Australian tourist visa procedure was successful, you will be granted a visa. You can keep track of your progress using the online Australia tourist visa tracking system.

The maximum processing time for a conventional Australian tourist visa (Subclass 600) is about a month , with the waiting time ranging from 20 to 33 days in the vast majority of cases. For fast-tracked visas or ETAs, the waiting time can be mere minutes or days, especially if you have all the necessary documentation to complete the verification time.

Finally, as far as Work and Holiday Visa Processing Times are concerned, we recommend you check the dedicated page on this site .

Duration and Validity of an Australia Tourist Visa

Tourist visas are valid for varying periods of time, depending on the type of visa.

The ETA is a 12-month tourist visa . It is a popular visa, but it is limited regarding the length of stay and only allows visitors to remain in Australia for 3 months or 90 days at a time . You can enter as often as you like as long during the one year the tourist visa is valid.

For a visit of longer duration or if you want to stay more than 3 months during any period, you will need a different Australian visa. The tourist visa stream (Subclass 600) has a length and duration that can vary based on the purpose of the stay. In most cases though, Australian tourist visa validity lasts at least 12 months .

As an example, the Australian e600 visitor visa is a 6-month tourist visa for Australia. It also allows you to stay in the country up to one year depending on the reasons for your visit. You can also enter and leave the country as needed as long as the visa is valid.

The subclass 870 visa instead is a longer-term 3-year tourist visa specifically designed for parents. With it, parents can stay in Australia for 3 or 5 years and no more than 10 years. This allows them to enter and re-enter Australia as needed to visit their stepchildren, adopted children or biological children more conveniently and affordably.

Whether you are planning an Australian trip that lasts 2 weeks, 90 days or even a year, there is a visa designed to suit your purpose. Check and apply online to find the right one for you or to explore samples of tourist visas.

There are several types of tourist visas in Australia that may apply if you do not qualify for a Tourist ETA or if the ETA does not suit you needs, such as a work and holiday visa or other types of Australian visas for tourism. Here they are:

Australian Work and Holiday Visa

Australian Tourist Stream Visa (Subclass 600 – Application form 1419)

The Australian tourist visa stream Subclass 600 (to which people apply using form n.1419) is a 6-month tourist visa for Australia. It also allows you to stay in the country up to one year depending on the reasons for your visit. You can also enter and leave the country as needed as long as the visa is valid.

Australian Visiting Academic Visa

The former Australia Tourist Visa 419 is closed to new applications for 2024 . However, the Tourist Visa Subclass 408 may be an alternative. This visa, which is also called the Temporary Activity Visa, allows you to participate in special approved programs, including:

  • Gap year volunteer work
  • Cultural enrichment programs
  • Youth exchanges
  • Community programs
  • School language assistants

This visa is valid for up to 12 months.

Australia Tourist Visa 771 (Australia Transit Visa)

Also known as the Australian Transit Visa, this visa allows people to spend up to 72 hours in Australia to “pass through”. With this visa, you may not spend more than 72 hours in the country.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about re-entering Australia with a tourist visa, about extending your stay in Australia as a tourist or about renewing your tourist visa while you are in Australia.

Is the Australian tourist visa multiple entry?

The Australian ETA is good for 90 days at a time, also allowing multiple-entries . This means that within one year sinve when the ETA Tourist visa has been issued you can enter, leav and re-enter Australia as many times as you wish – as long as each entry lasts a maximum of 90 days.

However, if your current visa is due to expire while you are still in the country, you will need to apply for an Australian tourist visa renewal, via a Long-stay tourist visa application .

What happens if I stay too long and my Australian tourist visa has expired?

Overstaying your stay with a tourist visa in Australia will result in your becoming an “unlawful non-citizen” – which can lead to detention and removal from the country. Worse, it could interfere with your ability to re-enter Australia on a tourist visa in the future. If you overstay your visa by more than 28 days, you could even become excluded and prevented from re-entering Australia on a tourist visa for as long as 3 years. Don’t do it.

Can I change my Australian visa once I am in the country?

No, you cannot change your visa type , such as an Australia tourist visa multiple entry, once you are in the country. However, you can apply for a further stay via the Long-Stay Tourist Visa, subclass 676.

What are my other options for extending my tourist visa?

Because the consequences of an Australia tourist visa overstay can be so serious, it is critical that you apply for a tourist visa renewal or extension as soon as possible and before your visa has expired . Applying online is fast and convenient.

  • Extend your visa

If you are planning to travel to Australia with a ETA Tourst Visa, you must know that it is not legal to work with an ETA . ETA-visitors have no right to “work”. However, they can do volunteer work or engage in other business activities, such as business meetings, conferences or seminars . Of course, you can stay in Australia on your tourist visa while looking for work, but once you found it you should obtain a different kind of visa in order to legally maintain your work.

However, working on a “tourist visa” in Australia is fairly common – especially for those who wish to work to pay for their holidays. If you want to legally work in Australia during your holiday though you will need a special, dedicated visa – not an ETA. This visa is called “ Work and Holiday Visa ” (often referred to also as “Working Holiday Visa”).

You can do any kind of work or jobs while on a tourist visa in Australia. However, your Work and Holiday Visa must be used within one year of the date it is issued, and it will be active for 12 months from the date you enter the country.

A working holiday visa cannot be extended: if you choose to stay longer, you must apply for a new visa. Additionally, you cannot bring dependent children or other family members with you, and you must pay taxes from anything you earn during your tourist visa working days.

The cost for a work and holiday tourist visa is of $ 625.00 as of 2024, but additional costs may also arise, including costs for police certificates, biometrics and health checks. Processing time can take from 13 to 22 days but may take longer if more information is needed or for verification purposes. Private health insurance coverage is highly recommended during your stay in the country. Read more about Work and Holiday Australian Visas for US Citizens here .

  • Apply for a WHV

According to Australia Marriage Law, you do not need to be an Australian resident to get married in Australia . You simply need the tourist visa (e.g. visa subclass 651) and you must file a Notice of Intended Marriage form along with any other requested documents .

If you are planning on getting married in Australia on a tourist visa, your celebrant can help ensure you meet all necessary requirements , including that you:

  • Are not married to anyone else
  • Are not marrying to a closely related family member
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Freely consent to the marriage

Notice that if you plan to live in Australia after marriage, you might need to apply for permanent residency as needed .

In order to obtain your Australian Tourist Visa, you will need to pay an application charge when applying for your visa – plus all costs related to the visa release. The total Australia tourist visa cost can therefore vary based on the type of visa and when you apply. Both paper applications and e-visas such as ETA tourist visa costs must be paid online , and forms of payment accepted are credit cards and PayPal.

While there are no Australia tourist visa fees associated with the ETA, there is an online service charge of $ 69.00 .

The cost of a Work and Holiday visa is instead of $ 625.00 .

The visa application fee may change periodically: if the Australian immigration tourist visa fees increase between the date of the application and the date of the receipt, the new fee will apply.

How and When to Get a Visa to Visit Australia

Katie Genter

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

US citizens can travel to many countries visa-free, but Australia isn't one of them. If you're thinking about traveling to Australia, you'll need to plan ahead and obtain valid travel documentation. Here's what you need to know before traveling to Australia as a US citizen with a US passport.

What Visa Do I Need?

The Australian government makes it easy to determine the visa you need with its Visa Finder website . This website asks three questions, the first of which is about the purpose of your trip (think: vacation, visiting relations, attending an event, doing business and seeking medical treatment, among others):

1 month tourist visa australia

The next question asks the country of your passport:

1 month tourist visa australia

And the final question asks how long you'd like to stay in Australia — either less than or more than three months.

1 month tourist visa australia

Most travelers from the US will likely be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601) — also called an ETA — as I was for my most recent month-long trip.

1 month tourist visa australia

This is because an ETA is available to US citizens visiting Australia for three months for reasons that fit into the following categories:

  • Holiday or vacation
  • Visit to see friends or family
  • Select business activities such as general business or employment inquiries; investigate, negotiate, sign or review a business contract; or attend a conference, trade fair or seminar

Since most US citizens traveling to Australia will be traveling for one of these reasons (and, as a result, are eligible to apply for an ETA) I'll focus on ETAs available to US citizens with a US passport.

What Are the Requirements?

To apply for an ETA, you must:

  • Have a valid passport from an eligible country (including the US).
  • Apply while outside Australia.
  • Wish to stay no longer than three months at a time (you must not study for more than three months, for example).
  • Be free from tuberculosis.
  • Not have any criminal convictions for which you have been sentenced for a total combined period of 12 months or more, whether or not you served the sentence(s).
  • Have paid back any debt — of either yourself or your family — or arranged to pay back any debt to the Australian government.

How Much Does It Cost to Apply Online?

The ETA is free, but there is an online application service charge of 20 Australian dollars (about $14) per applicant. As US passport holders -- along with seven other nationalities -- must apply online, there's no escaping the online application service charge. The fees for my recent ETA applications coded as "Bills and Utilities" on my Chase Sapphire Reserve statement, so don't expect the fee to code as "Travel."

How Long Does It Take?

The Australian government says "processing time for this visa is not available" and that the visa may take longer to process if:

  • You don't fill it out correctly
  • It takes the Australian government additional time to verify your information

Most ETA applications are approved immediately, and those that need additional processing are usually handled within 24 hours. This being said, the Australian government recommends travelers get an approved ETA before booking any nonrefundable travel. Once an ETA is granted, it is valid for one year and allows multiple entries up to three months each.

How Do I Apply?

The online ETA application takes about five minutes to complete. To start an application, click "Apply for an ETA."

1 month tourist visa australia

Step 1 : Select whether you need a Tourist ETA or a Business Visitor ETA, and certify that you are currently located outside Australia.

Step 2 : Enter your personal details, whether you have an alias, answer a question about your criminal record and enter your passport information.

Step 3 : Enter your address, phone number and email. Select whether you wish to receive communications by SMS and declare whether you hold any passports issued by other countries.

Step 4 : Confirm your information.

Step 5 : Pay the online service charge of 20 Australian dollars (about $14) using a credit card.

How Do I Check My Status?

Once you have submitted an online ETA application, you'll receive a response. The response may:

  • Notify you that your ETA has been granted.
  • Advise you that your application has been referred for further assessment. You can then check the status of your application after 12 hours by logging back into the ETA system and selecting the option "Check an ETA."
  • Advise you to contact the nearest Australian visa office to make a new application.

My response came immediately in an email titled, "ETA Application for Australia [CLIENT-IN-CONFIDENCE] (PROD)" that confirmed my application had "been successful," my payment had been received, that I was now the proud holder of a "valid ETA for Australia" and that my ETA had been linked to my passport, so no additional documents would be required during the travel process.

What Do I Need to Print Before Travel?

Nothing. When your ETA is linked to your passport, it becomes available to both airline representatives as well as Australian immigration authorities. So, there's no need to print your confirmation once your ETA has been granted.

Other Questions

If you have other questions about ETAs, or other types of Australian visas, take a look at the Australian government's Visa Finder website . Questions such as how to combine multiple visa types if the purpose of your trip changes and what to do if you get a new passport are covered on the website.

Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Step-by-Step Guide

Visa application, processing, and getting are quite hustling for many people. But without a visa, you can hardly cross the border of other countries. And if you’re planning to visit Australia, then you can’t skip the visa processing.

Though Australia is pretty strict about visas, it doesn’t mean it is very hard to get an Australian visitor visa . Even I would say the Australian visa processing is much easier than any other country as the whole process takes place online.

So, you can apply from your home. All you need is a phone or computer and a strong internet connection.

If you’re a first-time traveller and you intend to visit Australia as a genuine visitor, you should apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) . Also, if your Australian ETA (601) been refused and asked to apply Subclass 600 instead subclass 601 the follow this article.

Here in this article, I will give you a step-by-step guideline of how to apply for a visitor visa and some DOs and DON’Ts that you should follow if you don’t want your visa to be denied.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

Understanding Australia visitor visa Subclass 600

What is australian visitor visa (subclass 600).

Australian visitor Visa

An Australian visitor visa (Subclass 600) is a short time visit visa that will allow you to enter Australia for less than three months. This visa allows you to enter and stay in Australia for an allotted amount of time, with you being responsible for abiding by the rules and regulations associated with it.

Visitor visa (Subclass 600) has nearly six streams, but the two main streams are the Tourist stream and the Business stream . The visa validation, cost, and time processing depend on these streams.

Tourist Stream

Travellers looking to visit Australia should apply for a tourist stream visa. This visa is typically used by visitors who are going to Australia for leisure, medical treatment, visiting family or friends, and even completing short-term study or training activities lasting less than 3 months.

Business Stream

The Business Visitor Stream visa is for those travelling to Australia for business-related activities, such as attending a conference, training or seminars. Non-work-related activities such as networking and making sales enquiries are also allowed. It is important to note that this visa does not allow recipients to provide their services in the country while they are here.

Requirements for Australian visitor visa

Here I have listed some required and recommended information and documents that you may need to apply for the Australian visitor visa.

1. Online application form

Applying for a visa to enter, travel and stay in Australia just got simpler. Those looking to apply now can go online to complete the entire process, making it that much faster and more convenient! So, you can apply for your visa at your home without any hustle.

You have to fill up a 19-page application form that you will get after creating an ImmiAccount on the official immigration website of the Australian government. Get more details about the application form in the “how to apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) online” below.

2. A Valid Passport

When applying for an Australian visa, it is necessary to provide a valid passport as part of the application documentation. This is essential for the Australian government to consider and process visa requests. You have to scan your passport and then attach the file with the application form. The scanned copy should be clear and transparent. Otherwise, your visa can be rejected.

3. Recent passport size photos

As you have to provide all information through an online process, you must submit a soft copy of every document, including your photo and passport. You must attach a coloured passport-size photo to the required section of your application form. The photo must be clear and vivid.

4. National identity cards (if Have)

National identity cards are not mandatory for all applicants. But if you have, you must submit it. And if you’re under 18 and you don’t have your national identity card, then you can provide your birth certificate or other documents as evidence of your identity.

5. Proof of financial status

Proof of financial status is crucial for an Australian visitor visa, proving that you have enough funds in your bank account to support your stay and leave in Australia. To prove your financial status and you have enough funds, you need the following documents:

Your bank statement of at least three months period (if you’re carrying your trip expense).  Tax Return Your pay slips. Term deposits Audited accounts Credit card statement (if have)

Note: If someone is sponsoring your Australia trip, you may have to apply for a Sponsored family stream visa. Usually, your family member can sponsor your trip under this visa who has Australian citizenship or permanent resident, and your sponsor might be asked to pay a security bond.

6. travel itineries

A travel itinerary is a very important information that you must attach to your application form. In this travel itinerary, you have to include your day-to-day plans like places to visit and things to do during your vacation. And also mention the date, time, and your accommodation. Here is a sample copy of the travel itinerary . You only can submit a pdf copy of your travel itinerary.

Note: Travel itinerary is mandatory ONLY for those you are applying for the Tourist stream .

7. A cover letter

A cover letter is surely optional, but it can help you to get the visa smoothly. Because the whole process of applying and getting the Austria visitor visa would be online, there is no interview where you can explain your travel plans and purpose.

So, it is better to submit a cover letter that will explain your travel reason and travel plans. But of course, your cover letter must support every information that you have already submitted for the visa application.

8. Travel health insurance

Travel health insurance is also optional, like the cover letter, but it helps a lot to get the visa, and at the same time, the insurance is helpful during your stay in Australia. For example, if you have a medical emergency during your stay or your flight has been cancelled, you will get immediate financial support from the insurance company. So, travel insurance is required for your own sake and the visa authority also gets assurance that you can carry any medical emergency if needed.

9. Proof of employment status

With your visa application, you also need to submit evidence of your employment status.

For employee

  • NOC or Non-Objection Certificate
  • A letter that explains your role in the company
  • Income tax document

For Self-Employed or business owners

  • Business licence
  • A finance sheet that explains profits and losses

For Students

  • Students need to show their enrolment certificate of the particular school or university.
  • A non-objection letter from the specific school or university.

10. Application Fees

If you’re applying from outside Australia, then the tourist stream will cost you AUD 190.00 . And the cost is also the same for a business stream visa. You can pay the visa fee through your credit card, debit card, UnionPay, PayPal, and BPAY.

11. Additional Information

A Flight itinerary that will show Australia entering and exiting dates. And without buying an actual flight ticket, you can reserve your roundtrip flight which is also refundable in case your visa gets rejected.

An invitation letter from your family or friends if you’re staying with them in Australia. The letter should state your relationship with them, the reason for your trip, and so on.

Provide evidence of your previous travel (if you have). It may help you to get the visa smoothly.

A marriage license (if have) or a divorce certificate (if have).

Any property paper or house paper that you own in your home country.

Note: If any of this information is not in English, you’re highly recommended to translate them into English and then submit them.

Important Notes:

You don’t have to submit all the documents as some are required, and some are recommended. But it is better to submit as many as possible, which will increase the possibility of getting the visa. And remember your passport and photo are mandatory that you can’t skip. As you know, all your files have to be submitted through an online process. So, you have to make them either a jpg, PNG, BMP, or PDF file to submit. And no zip files or encrypted pdf files are acceptable. Don’t make your file size more than 5MB, as larger size files are not acceptable. If you have files that are bigger than 5MB, make sure you reduce the size and then upload them.

How to Apply for an Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Online?

Obtaining a visa to visit Australia is straightforward if you have the right information and documents. A simple guide can help make the process simpler and stress-free. Here I have explained how to apply for an Australian visitor visa in four easy steps. Also, you can watch my video in above.

1. Create an ImmiAccount

Creating an ImmiAccount is the most simple and crucial part of an Australian visitor visa application. Without having the ImmiAccount, you can’t get the application form, and you have to create it from immi.gov.au , which is the official immigration website of the Australian government.

Here you will get two steps to create the account. You need to fill up your family name, phone number, and, most importantly, an active email address at the first step. In comparison, the second step requires setting a password and some questions about you. Click here to create your ImmiAccount .

2. Fill up the application form

After registering for the ImmiAccount, you will receive an email to get access to the account. Now you just have to do the following steps.

First, log in to your account and click the “ New application ” option.  Then you have to choose the visa type. If you’re a genuine tourist, select the “ visitor ” option and then “ visitor visa (600) “. Now you have a 19-page application form which you must fill up carefully and correctly. Don’t give any wrong information that may cause your visa denial.

In these three simple steps, you can accomplish your visitor visa application form. And in case you cannot fill up your application form right then, you can always save it and edit it later. Moreover, you don’t have to print the form. Just fill-up the form and submit it. But be sure you have given all the correct information before submitting it.

3. Attach relevant documents

At this point, you have to submit all the required and recommended documents that we have mentioned before. On your application dashboard, you will have an option where you can upload all your files. Make sure you submit as many files as possible and make them less than 5MB before submitting them.

Now it’s time to submit your application form and then receive an Application Receipt via email.

Note: Remember, after submitting your application form, you cannot edit it anymore. So do double check before submitting.

4. Pay the visa fees

Now the last step is payment. The tourist stream visa fee is AUD 190.00 , and you also need to pay it online through a Credit card, debit card, UnionPay, or PayPal.

5. Make an Appointment for Biometrics

After submitting the application, create an account with VFS Global for biometric enrollment. You should have already received an email from Home Affairs regarding this, which includes an attachment stating the requirement to provide personal identifiers (biometrics) for the purposes of Section 40 of the Migration Act 1958 in relation to your Visitor (Tourist) (subclass 600) visa application. Please use your application number to schedule an appointment with VFS.

What is the Processing Time?

No one can predict the visa processing time as it is based on circumstances and the age of application finalisation. My visa processing time took nearly two years because I applied in February 2020 before the COVID-19 outbreak and the border was closed. I have received my visa confirmation email in March 2022.

But don’t be scared! Now the border has reopened for all visitors, and the processing time may take a few weeks. So don’t be so hopeless, just wait patiently as I did.

The visa validation depends on your travel itinerary and your nationality. Australian family visitor visa is generally granted for a period of 12 months. But normally, the Australian border agency will decide entry validity. In most cases it will be 3 months per entry.

Do I need to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation?

It is not compulsory to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation. But if you can manage a roundtrip flight ticket and book a staycation with a refund policy, it is better to submit these documents as they increase the chance of your visa approval. My suggestion is must do submit proof of accommodations including flight reservation.

How early should I apply for an Australian visitor visa?

It also depends on your travel itinerary, but you should apply at least six months before your planned trip. Since there is a huge backlog, submit your application as early as possible.

How much bank balance do I need for the approval of my visa?

It is hard to say any exact number that you need to have in your bank account. Because it depends on many factors like how many days you’re intended to stay in Australia, your accommodation cost, your daily cost, etc. Make sure you have enough funds in your bank account so that you can maintain your stay and leave. With my personal experience, Australia is a very expensive place for many including myself. If you have pre-booked (paid) accommodations and purchased flight tickets, then i think at least A$ 200 per day.

What can be the possible reasons for an application denial?

Your visa can be denied, refused or rejected for many different reasons. But the most primary and possible reasons are the following: If you submit wrong information or unclear information. If you fail to prove that you have no intension to overstay in Australia. If your travel purpose is ambiguous. If you fail to prove that you or your sponsor has enough funds to support your trip. Weak travel history Not enough funds Fake or misleading information Not telling truth about previous visa application refused from other countries, namely from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand etc.

If you face any problems or wants further to discuss regarding any questions about the visitor visa (subclass 600), let me know in the comment section or use our contact us form to assist you further or join our telegram helpline . For Malaysian who are facing problem with your ETA (601) can use the same form too. I will try my best to help you.

Can I apply Australia visit visa subclass 600 without travel history?. Because I never visit any country.

' data-src=

@Ashrafur Rahman. Of course, you can apply Australian visitor visa sub class 600 without any travel history.

' data-src=

i applied for a tourist visa in April 2023, but they refused. The status is

The applicant claims to be employed with xxxxx Electrical as Site engineer. Documents provided in support of the application include travel details, employment, financial and income documents along with inviter’s documents. In assessing these criteria, I have taken into account the information provided by the applicant in their visa application form and the supporting documents. I find that the information provided is not sufficient to satisfy me of their genuine temporary stay intention, and the applicant has not demonstrated that they have sufficiently strong commitments in India that would be an incentive for them to return to India

now can i re apply for visa

You can re-apply but I think better to get professional guidance. There should be more evidence to return to India.

This was a great and interesting article to read. I have really enjoyed all of this very cool and fun information. Thanks

' data-src=

Hi, I have submitted my application and paid for it, also I have done the biometrics. Status shows further assessment and i want to upload some more documents as well. Can I still upload it?

@Mandy Yes, if you need to upload more documents, you can do so easily via your ImmiAccount. Just log in to your dashboard and follow the directions to attach the relevant documents.

My wife is on work visa in australia and she had applied for tourist visa for me on my behalf but visa got refused due to insufficient document like my income detail. Just wanted to know: 1. If i can apply again from my side and if it is mandatory to mention in the online form regarding my first visa refusal or if it is ok without mentioning. 2. Also just wanted to know the list of mandatory documents required to upload along with the recommended documents.. What if I don’t have recommended documents.. 3. Since my wife is on work visa, can she sponsor me ?if yes, what all documents is required apart from invitation letter from my wife?

Hi Prashant. Your first question answer is you must need to tell them about your previous visa refusal even if it was not for Australia. Also, could you please share a bit more privately? Using our contact us page .

' data-src=

I have applied my Visitor Visa Subclass 600 on Dec 25th 2022 and still the application status is stuck at ”Further Assessment”. I have provided all requested documents = total is 23 docs uploaded to the immi account.

Any idea when I will be able to get the Visa grant letter for my application.

Appreciate your help

@Rahul Jonathan The timing for when you will receive your Australian visa grant letter, or any other related documents is dependent on many factors such as demographics and recent trends in applications. While the processing time may vary, it is advisable to wait for at least the designated processing period before reaching out to the authorities regarding an inquiry on your visa status. Best of luck!

' data-src=

Hi, I can’t seem to find the sample copy of the travel itinerary. Can you pls attach it as the hyperlink doesn’t seem to be working

' data-src=

The sample itinerary was added already. Thank you

My Wife and I is in the midst of processing the ETA to go to Australia. We have been rejected once before so I wonder if it’s still advisable to pursue the same path or go with subclass 600? though the first time we did not have our flights booked.

FYI our intention is so that my wife could attend her exam on 16 December 2022 at Brisbane, additionally, we’ll be visiting our relatives in the same city as well. from your article, you mentioned that an invitation letter from our relatives might further strengthen our application. May I please have a copy or a sample of such letter?

I am sorry to hear that you have been rejected once before. While it is not impossible for you and your wife to be approved again, it is still a challenge.

In your case, I would advise you to pursue ETA visa rather than a subclass 600. This is because the ETA visa does not require an invitation letter from your relative in Australia. However, if you choose the subclass 600 route, then I would suggest that you contact our office so that we can write an invitation letter for you and attach it to your application when we lodge it on your behalf.

' data-src=

What should I put in section where it asked for other travel documents? Will this include my expired passport and used/existing visas from other countries?

Do you have any other passports? Or you are a dual citizen? If not a dual citizen please include all your last 5 years travel histories. If you are Malaysian just use their ETA apps.

' data-src=

Do We Need to Upload Certified/ Notarised copies of New and Old Passport all pages?

Hi, you no need to notarized all passport pages. If you have good travel history on your old and new passport then combine all those pages and upload it together with other documents.

' data-src=

Hi, I am in South Australia on a student visa. My wife sister is a citizen here and she applied visitor visa for my wife on 9th June, 2022, but its still not approved. Could you please let me know why this visa is taking so long? Will my student visa affect their visitor visa?

Some nationality get longer waiting time then others. You are already there legally on a student visa so I don’t think your wife application will have anything with your current student visa.

' data-src=

have your wife got the visa now?

' data-src=

Hello, I have submitted my visitors visa application last June 19,2022 and the status is for further assessment. What does it mean? How woud I know if there’s incorrect upload of the required attachment, do they email me about it? I am just confused because under actions of my immi account it says Attached documents and health assessment. when I click on health assement it says no further examination required. on attached documemts it says further assessment. This is my second application. my first application was in 2019 and took only 10 days to receive the grant notification. Im considering the delay might due to backlogs. Appreciate your feedback

Hello there, health assement not required for tourists. The Department of Home Affairs will make further assessment on your visa application. You will be informed of this in writing by the Department and be given the opportunity to provide additional information or documents as part of this process. I am agree with you that delay might be the reason of huge backlogs. And regarding incorrect uploads, The answer is, you don’t need to upload any more documents as they are already there unless you received any email for additional documents. Please do Re-check all your uploaded documents one more time. Thank you and wish you good luck on your visa application

' data-src=

With regard to submission of documents not in English should I provide both original and translated documents.

Hi there. Submit only translated copy but make sure do the translation from authorized by them. I submitted only translated copy and keep the original with me. Hope this helps

' data-src=

Hi,what is the processing time now for visitors visa subclass 600 now? Rgds

At least 30 days+ depending your location and passport you are holding. Some gets faster than others.

' data-src=

I have uploaded documents ie 78 which is more than the maximum limit of 60. I have uploaded the same document in parts in my 600 Australia sponsor family visa. What should I do know?

Hi, did they asked you to submit anymore documents? If not then just wait or you may just send them an email to ask your status. Family sponsored visa usually gets approved just wait and let me know if you get your visa.

' data-src=

hello i applied for sub 600 tourist visa on 25th may. before the outbreak i receieved a grant but wasnt able to travel. i re- applied and they didnt want visa money because of previous grant. it says i should get visa in 26 or 37 days max is this true. thank you

They are refunding those who are withdraw their application. In your case i didn’t exactly understand what they mean to giving you visa 26 or 37 days. Usually Australian visa Sub class 600 comes one or two years validity.

' data-src=

Hi, can the Australian border force approve a 600 visa?

Yes. subclass 600 are now issuing as usual.

How To Spend 1 Month In Australia – My 2023 Australia Itinerary

Trying to figure out how to spend 1 month travelling in Australia? Well check out my sample Australia itinerary to pack in the best of the East Coast trail!

Travelling the East Coast of Australia is one of the most popular backpacker routes in the world – it’s packed full of incredible destinations, activities and Aussie goodness and there’s heaps to pack into an Australia itinerary!

But the stretch between Sydney and Cairns is MASSIVE – over 2,000km in total if you’re busing it up the coast – so figuring out where to stop, what to do and how to piece it all together can be a bit of a logistical nightmare, picking the best places to visit in Australia is a tough task!!

yamba yha east coast australia surf backpacker travel

So how would I spend a month in Australia?

Well if you’re planning an adventure on the East Coast here’s a sample Australia itinerary to get you started – from where to stop to the best Fraser Island tours and best Whitsundays tours.

Given the fact that Greyhound Bus Passes are the most popular way to tackle this route I’ve also put in some info about the overnight buses you can use to link everything together too.

How To Spend 1 Month In Australia – My Sample Australia Itinerary

Sydney – 3 nights.

The perfect place to start your Australia itinerary – kicking back in the iconic city of Sydney! Chill on Bondi Beach, take a wander to the famous Opera House and Circular Key, stroll around the incredible coastal footpaths and take the ferry to Manly Beach.

Overnight bus to Yamba (10 hours, 10 mins)

Yamba – 2 nights

One of my favourite places in Australia and probably one of the most overlooked towns on the East Coast Trail. Stay with Shane and Justin at the Yamba Central, join one of their group surf trips or Shanes famous Yamba tour. Good vibes all round! If you have some more time to play with they now offer a Yamba Surf Camp too – so go hit the waves!

Day bus to Byron Bay (2 hours, 12 mins)

dolphin kayaking byron bay australia backpacker cape byron kayaks (2 of 2)

Byron Bay – 3 nights

If you’ve been following my adventures for a while you already know this is one of my favourite places on the planet! Kick back in the Byron bubble for a few days – go kayaking with dolphins , scuba dive at Julian Rocks , take a day trip to Nimbin , learn to surf or just wander up to Cape Byron Lighthouse and the most Easterly Point of Australia.

Check out my Ultimate Backpackers Guide To Byron Bay for more info!

Day bus to Brisbane (2 hours 30 mins – 5 hours 25 mins depending on departure time)

Brisbane – 2 nights

Although I’m not a huge fan of Brisbane I know a lot of you like the glitz and glamour of the city so I’ve included it! It’s also a great base to head to Australia Zoo for the day or head out to Moreton Island for some incredible shipwreck snorkelling.

If that’s not your thing you can always use these 2 nights to extend your stay in Byron ;)

Day bus to Noosa (2 hours 10 mins – 3 hours 15 mins depending on departure time)

fraser island tour noosa rainbow beach tag along australia

Noosa – 2 nights

Another great beachside town! Explore Noosa National Park and spot koalas in the wild, tae some surf lessons and of course make sure you head out on a canoe tour through the Noosa Everglades.

Day bus to Rainbow Beach (2 hours 30 mins)

Rainbow Beach – 2 nights

(one pre and post Fraser Island trip)

More great beaches and an awesome pre and post Fraser Island party vibe!

Handy tip: you need to arrive in Rainbow Beach before 6pm for most of the pre Fraser safety briefings

fraser island tag along tour nomads australia queensland backpacker review

Fraser Island – 3 day, 2 nights tour

One of the must do Australia bucket list items and my personal highlight of any Australia itinerary! Cruise along the beach in a 4×4, drive through incredible rainforest tracks and stop off at locations like Lake Mackenzie, the Maheno Shipwreck, Eli Creek and Champagne Pools.

You could also do your Fraser Island tour from Noosa  too if you prefer an overnight hostel option.

Overnight bus to Airlie Beach (this is a bit of a beast at 18 hours 45 mins! You can break it up in Agnes Water/1770 but if you’re short on time suck it up!)

Airlie Beach – 3 nights

(split between pre and post Whitsundays Sailing Trip)

Heaps of party vibes here pre and post Whitsundays Sailing! When you’re not sipping cold beers you can nurse your hangover in the free lagoon swimming pool, hire a kayak and explore the bay or even take a scenic flights over Heart Reef.

sunset shakka airlie beach whitsundays backpacker travel australia

Whitsunday Islands – 2 day, 2 nights Tour

(or 3 day, 2 night if you have some extra days to play with)

Alongside Fraser Island this is one of the big to do’s in Australia. Sail amongst tropical islands, snorkel on the Souther End of the Great Barrier Reef , walk along the famous Whitehaven Beach and grab some postcard perfect shots from Hill Inlet Lookout.

There’s a range of boats to choose from – whether you want to party on the infamous Atlantic Clipper, enjoy the awesome vibes of the Tongarra or enjoy a bit more luxury on board Powerplay.

Day bus to Townsville (3 hours 40 mins – 5 hours depending on departure time)

Magnetic Island – 2 nights (from Townsville)

A great little island escape and the perfect spot to meet some incredible Aussie wildlife – including koalas and super friendly rock wallabies! You can grab a Magnetic Island Package deal for about $140, which includes your return ferry from Townville, accommodation, snorkel hire and even some meals.

Read more about why I love Magnetic Island here.

Day bus to Mission Beach (3 hours 20 mins)

Mission Beach – 2 nights

Time to get your adrenaline on the go! Mission Beach is the perfect base for white water rafting on the Tully River as well as being one of the most popular places to skydive in Australia as you get incredible views over the reef and land on the beach!

Day bus to Cairns (2 hours – 2 hours 15 min depending on departure time)

Cairns – 3 nights

The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef! Head out on a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef or if you have longer complete your open water dive course there too, there are plenty of epic Great Barrier Reef tours to choose from!

When you’re not on the ocean join the crew from AJ Hackett for some bungy jumping or take a day trip to Cape Tribulation or the Atherton Tablelands.

Make It Your Own!

Of course if you’re taking longer on the East Coast you can tailor this itinerary to suit your own time frame – add in some extra nights, some more trips or simply a few days chilling out by the beach!

You could also do your Fraser Island trip from Noosa like I did with Nomads Fraser Island if you prefer a more flash packer option in an on island hostel rather than camping.

2023 update: unfortunately Nomads Fraser Island isn’t currently running, but K’gari Adventures offer an awesome cabin accomodation option.

If you wanted some more surfing fun (like myself!) you can also adapt the start of the trip to include a Sydney to Byron Bay Surf Trip with Mojo Surf, which is a great alternative to the overnight bus.

Personally I’d say 4 weeks is the minimum amount of time you’d need to properly experience the East Coast without rushing it or spending too much time on buses. For more information on time frames check out my “ East Coast Australia – How Long Should You Take ” post.

However if you do only have 3 weeks to play with – check out my Australia 3 week itinerary post .

East Coast Australia Itinerary Package Deal

If you’re looking for the easiest way to get your East Coast Australia Itinerary all booked up and sorted I’ve teamed up with RTW Backpackers and you can book my sample itinerary as a complete package!

It includes accommodation, heaps of day trips and of course my recommended Fraser Island and Whitsundays Tours!

You can even book it all as an open dated Australia itinerary and spread it out over a longer period if you have more time to play with – the perfect opportunity to add in some more time in spots like Byron Bay, indulge in a surf camp or complete your open water dive course!

Plus use the promo code BPB100 to save an additional $100AUD off the price!

Or if you’d like something more customised check out my East Coast Australia Trip Planner and fit in everything you’ve got on your bucket list!

  • Travel abroad
  • Foreign travel advice

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Australia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Australia’s High Commission in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

You do not need a pre-departure COVID-19 test to enter or transit Australia regardless of your COVID-19 vaccination status. See the Australian government’s website for advice on COVID-19 and travelling.

COVID-19 quarantine requirements

Each state and territory determines its own quarantine rules. You should check requirements for specific states and territories .

Passport validity requirements

For entry into Australia, your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. If you’re transiting another country on your way to or from Australia, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Visa requirements

British citizens can usually get the following types of electronic visitor visa:

  • eVisitor visa . There is no visa application charge or service fee
  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via the iOS App or Android App . There is no visa application charge, but a service fee of A$20 may apply

Information on all other types of visa is available from the Department of Home Affairs .

Working holiday visa

Thousands of Britons travel to Australia each year on a working holiday visa and the vast majority have no issues. Working conditions, accommodation and medical facilities are generally of a good standard.

You can find information about your rights as an employee in Australia and how to report any concerns about unfair or unlawful treatment on the Fair Work Ombudsman website , or by calling 131 394.

Get more information about working in Australia .

Dual nationals

If you’re a British national living in Australia with Australian citizenship, or a dual national, it is best to leave and enter Australia on your Australian passport. You could face difficulties and delays if you do not. See Australian government advice for dual nationals .

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Australia guide .

Quarantine of goods

Australia has strict quarantine rules to keep out pests and diseases that could affect plant, animal or human health.

You must fill out an Incoming Passenger Card and either:

  • declare any risk goods including food, animal products and plant material (including wooden articles)
  • dispose of any risk goods in the bins at the airport or sea port

All luggage is x-rayed on arrival. Any items of concern are further inspected, treated and if necessary confiscated and destroyed. You can be heavily fined for breaches of quarantine regulations.

You can find more information on the Department of Agriculture website .

You will also be asked to declare whether you have ‘visited a rural area, or been in contact with, or near, farm animals outside Australia in the past 30 days’.

Australia announces changes to its temporary graduate visa programs.

Whatsapp Follow Channel

The Australian Government has announced significant changes to the Temporary Graduate visa programs starting July 1, 2024, realigning visa streams with study levels. Key benefits include work opportunities, family inclusion, and extended stays for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders. Age limits and qualification requirements will be adjusted.

cms (14)

  • Stay: Holders of the Temporary Graduate visa can stay in Australia after completing their studies, allowing them to explore further opportunities or gain work experience in the country.
  • Include Family: Applicants can include family members, such as partners, children, or their partner's children, in their visa application. However, family members must meet health and character requirements as per the visa regulations.
  • Work: One of the significant advantages of the Temporary Graduate visa is the ability to work unrestricted hours in any sector. This provides graduates with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their field of study or explore other career pathways while residing in Australia.

Here's a breakdown of the changes to Australia's Temporary Graduate visa programs.

  • Age Eligibility: The maximum age limit for applicants applying under the Post-Vocational Education Work stream will be reduced to 35 years or younger.
  • Eligibility for Hong Kong and British National Overseas Passport Holders: Despite the age reduction, individuals holding Hong Kong or British National Overseas passports will remain eligible for this stream if they are under the age of 50.
  • Alternative Visa Options: Applicants who no longer meet the age requirements for the Post-Vocational Education Work stream may still have options available through other visa pathways. They are encouraged to explore these alternatives to continue their stay in Australia.
  • Qualification Requirements: To be eligible for the Post-Vocational Education Work stream, applicants must hold an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification closely related to their nominated occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Those with degree-level qualifications or higher will no longer qualify for this stream and must apply through the Post-Higher Education Work stream .
  • Duration of Stay: Successful applicants under the Post-Vocational Education Work stream may continue to stay in Australia for up to 18 months.
  • Extended Stay for Passport Holders: Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders may have the option to extend their stay for up to 5 years, providing them with an extended period to live and work in Australia.

Australian Visa Information

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the  Department of Home Affairs website.

There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is  here .

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.

Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.

The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.

You can only apply for the  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located  here .

For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. For more information on different visa types, and Australian visa requirements including how to apply for an Australian visa, visit the  Department of Home Affairs  website.

If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.

See the Department of Home Affairs website for details.

When embarking on a long-term travel adventure, one of the most important decisions you'll need to make is choosing the right size backpack. Your backpack will be your constant companion, carrying all of your belongings for weeks or even months on end. It's crucial to select a backpack that not only fits your needs but also provides comfort and support throughout your journey. Here's why choosing the right size backpack is so essential for long-term travel.

Firstly, selecting a backpack that is the appropriate size ensures that you have enough space to pack everything you'll need for your trip. One month of travel requires careful consideration of what items you'll bring along. From clothing and toiletries to electronics and travel accessories, it's essential to have enough room to comfortably fit everything in your backpack. Choosing a backpack that is too small will limit your packing options and may force you to leave behind important items. On the other hand, selecting a backpack that is too large can lead to overpacking and unnecessary weight, causing discomfort and strain on your back and shoulders.

Secondly, the right size backpack provides balance and weight distribution, contributing to a comfortable travel experience. A backpack that is too small or too large can throw off your center of gravity, making it difficult to maintain stability while walking or hiking. This imbalance can result in physical discomfort and could potentially lead to injuries. Opting for a backpack that fits your body size and frame ensures that weight is evenly distributed, reducing the risk of strain and allowing for more comfortable travel.

Additionally, a properly fitting backpack can provide easy access to your belongings. When selecting a backpack, consider the layout and organization of its compartments and pockets. The size and number of these compartments will dictate how efficiently you can pack and access your items. It's helpful to choose a backpack with multiple compartments, allowing you to separate and organize your belongings for easy retrieval. This way, you can access your essentials quickly without needing to unpack your entire backpack, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience.

Lastly, it's important to note that airlines and other forms of transportation often have strict guidelines when it comes to carry-on luggage sizes. Choosing a backpack that falls within these regulations can save you from potential headaches and additional fees. Before purchasing a backpack, research the size restrictions for the airlines and transportation methods you'll be using during your travels. Ensuring your backpack meets these requirements will make your journey smoother and more convenient.

In summary, choosing the right size backpack for long-term travel is paramount for a successful and comfortable adventure. A backpack that is the appropriate size allows you to pack all necessary items, provides balance and weight distribution, offers easy access to your belongings, and complies with airline and transportation regulations. Take the time to research and try on different backpack sizes to find the one that perfectly suits your needs and body type. Remember, your backpack will be your trusty companion throughout your journey, and selecting the right size will make all the difference in ensuring a pleasant and memorable travel experience.

Choosing the right backpack size is crucial when it comes to long-term travel. Whether you are embarking on a month-long adventure or even longer, having the right backpack size can make or break your trip. Here are some factors to consider when determining the ideal backpack size for one month of travel:

Duration of your trip:

The length of your trip is an important factor to consider when choosing a backpack size. For a one-month trip, a backpack with a capacity ranging from 40 to 60 liters is generally sufficient. This size allows you to carry all your essentials without being excessively bulky or heavy.

Type of travel:

The type of travel you will be doing also plays a role in determining the ideal backpack size. If you are planning on staying in hotels or guesthouses and not camping, you may need less space for camping equipment and can focus more on organizing your clothing and personal items. On the other hand, if you plan on camping and hiking, you will need a backpack that can accommodate camping gear like a tent, sleeping bag, and cooking supplies.

Personal needs and preferences:

Consider your personal needs and preferences when choosing a backpack size. If you are someone who likes to pack a lot of clothing options or prefers to have extra space for souvenirs, you may want to opt for a larger backpack. However, keep in mind that a larger backpack can be heavier and more cumbersome to carry around.

Climate and destination:

The climate and destination of your trip will impact the type and amount of clothing you need to pack. If you are traveling to a destination with a cold climate, you'll likely need bulkier clothing and additional layers, which will require more space in your backpack. Alternatively, if you are traveling to a warm destination, you may be able to pack lighter, thinner clothing that takes up less space.

Accessibility and organization:

Consider the accessibility and organization features of the backpack. Look for backpacks with multiple compartments and pockets, as well as easy access to the main compartment. These features will help you stay organized and make it easier to find what you need without unpacking your entire backpack.

Weight and comfort:

The weight of your backpack is an important consideration, as you'll be carrying it for long periods of time. Look for a backpack that is lightweight but still durable enough to withstand the rigors of travel. Additionally, make sure the backpack has adjustable straps and a padded hip belt for added comfort and support.

Finally, consider your budget when choosing a backpack size. Larger backpacks with more features and higher quality materials tend to be more expensive. However, investing in a good quality backpack that meets your needs can make your trip more enjoyable and prevent unnecessary discomfort or inconvenience.

In conclusion, choosing the right backpack size for one month of travel involves considering factors such as the duration of your trip, the type of travel, your personal needs and preferences, the climate and destination, accessibility and organization features, as well as weight, comfort, and budget considerations. By carefully evaluating these factors, you can select a backpack that will provide you with the ideal balance between storage space and functionality for your long-term adventure.

Understanding the Travel Restrictions for Visa Holders Entering Australia

When planning for a one-month trip, one of the most important considerations is what size backpack to bring. The size of your backpack can greatly impact your experience while traveling. Here, we will discuss the pros and cons of different backpack sizes for one month of travel.

Daypack (20-30 liters):

  • Pros: A daypack is perfect for short trips or city breaks where you don't need to carry a lot. It is lightweight and compact, making it easy to maneuver in crowded places. It is also ideal for day hikes or exploring nature during your trip.
  • Cons: The main downside of a daypack is its limited capacity. You may struggle to fit all your belongings, especially if you need to pack for a variety of weather conditions. Additionally, daypacks usually lack proper support and padding, which can become uncomfortable if you have to carry heavy items.

Carry-on Backpack (35-45 liters):

  • Pros: A carry-on backpack offers a good balance between size and functionality. It allows you to bring enough clothes, toiletries, and other essentials for a month-long trip. You won't have to worry about checked luggage fees or lost bags. It is also convenient for moving around airports and navigating public transportation.
  • Cons: The main disadvantage of a carry-on backpack is its size limitations. You may struggle to pack bulkier items or bring multiple pairs of shoes. It requires careful organization and efficient packing to fit everything you need for a month into a smaller bag.

Travel Backpack (50-65 liters):

  • Pros: A travel backpack provides ample space for long trips. You'll have enough room to pack extra clothes, a variety of shoes, and other personal items. It also often comes with specialized compartments and organization features, making it easier to find and access your belongings.
  • Cons: The larger size of a travel backpack can be cumbersome and heavy. It may not be suitable for travelers who aren't used to carrying heavy loads or who plan on traveling to places with uneven terrain. Additionally, some airlines may not allow such large backpacks as carry-on luggage, requiring you to check it in.

Expedition Backpack (70+ liters):

  • Pros: An expedition backpack is designed for travelers who are planning for extreme adventures or long durations in remote areas. It offers maximum capacity, allowing you to carry bulky or specialized equipment. It is also built with durability and comfort in mind, often featuring superior suspension systems and padding.
  • Cons: The size of an expedition backpack is excessive for the majority of travelers and can be overwhelming to carry around. It is unnecessary for most one-month trips, as the extra space can encourage overpacking. Additionally, it may not comply with carry-on size restrictions and can be problematic when traveling by air.

In conclusion, choosing the right backpack size for a one-month trip depends on your personal preferences and the nature of your travel plans. A daypack is suitable for short trips or exploring cities, while a carry-on backpack strikes a balance between size and functionality. A travel backpack provides ample space for longer trips, and an expedition backpack is reserved for extreme adventures. Consider the pros and cons of each size before making your decision, keeping in mind your comfort, convenience, and the specific requirements of your trip.

Traveling to Italy with a French Schengen Visa: Exploring the Possibilities

When it comes to traveling for an extended period of time, packing efficiently is key. One of the most important decisions you'll need to make is choosing the right size backpack for your trip. The size of your backpack will depend on a few factors, such as the duration of your trip, the type of activities you plan to engage in, and your personal packing style. Here are some tips to help you pack efficiently in a backpack for extended travel:

  • Consider the duration of your trip: For a one-month trip, a backpack with a capacity between 40-60 liters should be sufficient. This will provide enough space to pack your essentials without being too bulky or heavy to carry around. If you're planning on traveling to multiple climates or need to bring specialized gear (like camping equipment), you may want to opt for a larger backpack.
  • Choose a backpack with the right features: Look for a backpack that has multiple compartments and pockets. This will help you stay organized and make it easier to find things when you need them. Additionally, consider a backpack with a front-loading design or a suitcase-style opening, as this will allow you to access your belongings without having to rummage through everything.
  • Pack versatile clothing: When it comes to packing clothing for an extended trip, choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Stick to neutral colors and pack items that can be layered for different weather conditions. It's also a good idea to pack lightweight clothing that can easily be washed and dried.
  • Pack travel-sized toiletries: To save space in your backpack, opt for travel-sized toiletries or transfer your favorite products into travel-sized containers. You can also consider purchasing toiletries at your destination to save space and weight in your backpack.
  • Pack only the essentials: It's important to be mindful of the items you pack in your backpack. Take a minimalist approach and only pack the essentials. Consider what items you will use frequently and prioritize those. Avoid packing items that you might only need once or twice during your trip.
  • Use packing organizers: Packing cubes and compression bags are great tools to help maximize the space in your backpack. Use packing cubes to separate items by category, such as clothing, electronics, and toiletries. Compression bags are great for reducing bulk and creating more room in your backpack.
  • Leave room for souvenirs: If you plan on bringing back souvenirs or shopping during your trip, leave some empty space in your backpack. This will give you room to pack those extra items without overloading your backpack.
  • Test your backpack before your trip: Before setting off on your trip, test your backpack to ensure it's comfortable and fits well. Load it up with your packed essentials and walk around for a while to see how it feels. Make any necessary adjustments to the straps or weight distribution to ensure a comfortable fit.
  • Keep important items easily accessible: It's important to keep important items such as your passport, wallet, and phone easily accessible. Use the top pocket or a small pouch to keep these items within reach, so you don't have to dig through your backpack every time you need them.
  • Be mindful of weight: Keep in mind that you'll be carrying your backpack for long periods of time, so it's crucial to pack light. Aim to keep the weight of your backpack around 10-15% of your body weight. This will help prevent fatigue and discomfort while traveling.

By following these tips, you can efficiently pack your backpack for extended travel and ensure a comfortable and organized trip. Remember to pack smartly and prioritize the essentials to make the most of your adventure.
