Delhi to Ladakh on a Royal Enfield is perhaps one of the most famous and challenging trips that you can undertake on a bike. But the famous 1,800 kms of round trip is by no means for inexperienced bikers – most parts of the roads are at an altitude of 13,000 feet and above, and you need to take care of rough road conditions and the weather

So what about the not-so-adventurous bikers? Here’s a list of some options you can explore near Delhi-NCR. Most of them can be covered on the weekend . Especially if you own a Royal Enfield, and you love bike trips, there’s no reason you should miss out on these trips. Holidify brings to you some of the best road trips from Delhi you can take using your motorcycle.

1. Delhi to  Garh Mukteshwar (110 km)

At just about 110 km from Delhi , this is the closest point where you can take a bath in the holy Ganges . One of the famous road trips from Delhi, this stretch is also famous for dolphin sighting, but you need a bit of luck on your side to spot them. They are more easily visible when the water level is low, and there is bright sunshine, so early summers (April-May) should be a good time to spot them. Fort Unchagaon is a heritage hotel in Garhmukteshwar , so if you would like to stay luxuriously, you can book a room and stay overnight.

Road condition  and driving directions : Take the NH-24 from Ghaziabad and keep driving straight towards Hapur . Take the Hapur bypass to avoid city traffic. The road is in good condition, and the traffic thins once you are past Hapur. Take the road to Birjghat , which is around 10kms from the Garh Mukteshwar city. The ride shouldn’t take more than 2 hours of yours. Dhabas : The small town of Babugarh on the way has plenty of dhabas, with a chain called Shiv Tourist dhabas . There’s a bunch of them, and it’s hard to tell which one is the original, but they are all more or less good.

2. Delhi to  Agra (136 km) &  Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary  (223 km)

The Yamuna expressway is probably the best road in the country at present and an absolute must-do for all road trip enthusiasts in Delhi. If you have enough driving stamina, you can visit the Taj Mahal and Bharatpur bird sanctuary and come back to Delhi by late at night.

Road condition   and driving directions : You can cover the 180 kms stretch of road in less than 2 hours – the road is just amazing. Take care of the air pressure in your tires – too much heat driving at a fast speed have caused tires of some vehicles to burst, so remember to maintain a lower than normal air pressure. Dhabas : Unfortunately, the expressway has no dhabas at the side, so if you want to stop and eat on the way, you might prefer the old highway (via Palwal), although the driving wouldn’t be as much fun or fast. There are a few eateries on the side of expressway right after each toll. These eateries are good enough to quench your hunger and thirst but don’t have high expectations from the dhabas here. 

3. Delhi to  Mussoorie  (289 km)

Mussoorie  is one of the nearest and prettiest hill stations around Delhi and one of the most famous road trips from Delhi. From waterfalls and ropeways to a bustling local market and steaming momos, it has all the makings of a classic Indian hill station. And the drive from Delhi to Mussoorie , especially the last stretch after Dehradun , is breathtaking.

Road condition : Unfortunately, the road from Delhi to Dehradun is not in the best shape, but the scenery on the way after that more than makes up for that. Driving to Dehradun takes around 6 hours and another 1.5 hours from there to the hilltop on Mussoorie . Dhabas : Among the dhabas, Cheetal Grand is the famous eating joint on this route. Located near Khatauli, Cheetal Grand serves typical  roti ,  dal ,  gobi ,  paneer ,  parantha , etc., to western-style breakfast food including omelettes, sandwiches, fries, cutlets etc.  Between Dehradun and Mussoorie , there are a lot of small Maggi joints as well, serving hot bowls of Maggi with chai, snacks and soft drinks.

4. Delhi to  Chandigarh  (244 km) &  Kasauli / Shimla  (342 km)

The most planned city in India,  Chandigarh  is not only an excellent place to visit on the weekend, but also serves as a base from where you can drive to the hill stations in Himachal Pradesh.  Shimla  and  Kasauli  are beautiful hill stations near Chandigarh , around 2-3 hours of a pleasant drive from Chandigarh .

Road condition : Connecting Delhi to the rest of Punjab, the Grand Trunk road is important to the economy, and is in a reasonably good shape. Dhaba :  Sukhdev dhaba  at  Murthal  is one of the most famous dhabas among Delhites , and is by no means over-rated. Haveli and Gulshan Dhaba are also very famous dhabas at Murthal. The food, especially the parathas, here are amazingly delicious, which is why many people drive to Murthal every day (and night). The food alone could make your road trip worth the effort. 

5. Delhi to  Jaipur  (282 km)

The famous pink city is just about a perfect drive from the capital, at around 7 hours by bike. And with so much to offer, Jaipur is always a good choice for a tourist destination.

Road condition : Unfortunately, the Delhi – Jaipur highway , although a part of the Golden Quadrilateral project, is in a terrible condition. One of the best roads in India till a few years ago, unfinished, abandoned flyover constructions have left the road in poor shape and traffic merging at several points, so it takes up to 6-7 hours to reach Jaipur from Delhi. Dhabas : There are a few dhabas scattered all along the highway, although there is no particularly very famous one. Bajwa Ka Dhaba and Highway King are among the good dhabas on the road which could be tried. If you really have to go to a dhaba for just food, you might have to head out of Jaipur on the Sikar Road and eat at Sharma Dhaba , the most famous dhaba  around Jaipur .

6. Delhi to  Alwar  (167 km) + Sariska Tiger Reserve

Sariska , one of the most famous Tiger reserves in the country, along with  Alwar, is  an interesting short weekend trip from Delhi. Pick a good time to visit – preferably in February/March, when the chances of sighting a tiger are most, and before the weather gets hot enough even to contemplate visiting Rajasthan .

Road condition to Alwar : With the construction of a lot of flyovers abandoned midway, this is not the best of roads for a  fast and furious  kind of trip, but you can reach Alwar from Delhi easily in under 5 hours. Dhabas: There are a lot of dhabas and restaurants along Delhi-Alwar Road . Even though no particular dhaba is very famous on this route, Pind Balluchi and Haldirams are among standard restaurants which serve good food.

7. Delhi to  Nainital (297 km)

One of the popular hill stations in the Himalayas , Nainital is one heck of a place for a road trip from Delhi. Though it is considered to be a year-round destination, one could avoid visiting this place from about July-September , mainly to avoid the monsoon which often causes road blockades.

Road condition to Nainital : Most of the people travelling to Nainital via road take the Delhi -  Hapur – Moradabad – Rampur  route which have good roads with just a few potholes between the Moradabad – Rampur stretch . The entire journey would take approximately 6 hours. Dhabas:  There are quite a few places along the route where one can stop over for food. Apart from the small dhabas on the highway, Bikanerwala , in Garjola , is a popular restaurant where one can indulge in some real good food.

8. Delhi to  Rishikesh (238 km)

Located at the confluence of the rivers Ganga and Chandrabagha , Rishikesh is one of the holiest and most spiritual places of the Hindus. The raw, scenic beauty of this place makes it an ideal setting for yoga, meditation and adventure sports such as river rafting and trekking . It has pleasant weather throughout the year, but it gets hot there in May-June.

Road condition to Rishikesh:  Delhi to Rishikesh by car is a good option for hassle-free travelling. The roads and traffic gets a bit bad once you reach Muzzafarnagar, and it continues till Roorkee. Else, the road conditions are pretty decent. It’s a 6 to 7 hours journey. Dhabas: Cheetal Restaurant at Khatauli has been a famous stopover point for many years and offers good, hygienic food. One can also try Pandit Dhaba, which offers some really good snacks and tea.

9. Delhi to  Dharamshala (474 km)

Nestled in the beautiful Kangra Valley , with dense pine and deodar forests, numerous streams, cool healthy air, attractive surroundings and the nearby snowline, Dharamshala has everything for a perfect holiday. It is also the headquarters of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama . Though a bit far compared to other road trip locations, this quiet, peaceful hill station is one of the must-visit road trips from Delhi

Road condition to Dharamshala:  The drive to Dharamshala  from Delhi via Chandigarh, Kiratpur and Bilaspur should take around 12-13 hours.  Roads are generally clear, broad and well maintained. Dhabas:  Driving along NH 1, several eating options can be found depending on your budget. Pahalwaan Dhaba at Murthal is an excellent stop if you’re craving for some yummy paranthas.  You can also stop at McDonald’s or Haveli near Karnal while going towards Ambala.  

10. Delhi to  Neemrana (122km away)

The royal town of Neemrana is 122 km from Delhi. An architectural marvel, the Neemrana Fort Palace was built here in 1464 AD on a hill of the Aravallis. The once-in-ruins fort has been converted to a Fort Palace Hotel for over three decades now, preserving its medieval beauty & grandeur .  For adventure seekers, it offers guests and day visitors the exhilarating experience of ziplining across the Aravalli hills. If you are looking for a road trip that leads you to a royal weekend-stay, this heritage-hotel is a good option.

Road condition to Neemrana: From Delhi, this shorter stretch on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway has been said to be in decent condition but can get busy. Even in peak-traffic hours, it won’t take more than 3.5 hours to get here.  Dhabas: Although it is a short distance to Neemrana, the renowned Mannat Dhaba in Dharuhera would be a good stopover for an exceptional lassi and most other cravings you may have. There are many other dhabas on the way as well.

11. Delhi to  Mathura and Vrindavan (180km away)

Road condition to Mathura & Vrindavan: Similar to a drive or ride to Agra, the route to Mathura and Vrindavan is also the well-maintained Yamuna Expressway . The journey should not take more than 3 hours. There are no gas stations on the expressway so fill fuel before you start your trip. Dhabas: There are no dhabas or food-joints on the Yamuna Expressway. If you are the kind who would need a snack, it is advisable to carry it with you from Delhi. Eateries can be found near tolls in case of an emergency. 

12. Delhi to  Ranikhet (354 km)

Ranikhet or ‘Queen’s Meadow’ is a must-visit for people looking for scenic Kumaoni beauty with a touch of colonial heritage. This cantonment town is picturesque. July-November is the best time to visit as the weather is pleasant through the route and in Ranikhet. 

Road Condition to Ranikhet: As it is an 8-hour drive, those looking for a stop-over may consider two routes to Ranikhet from Delhi. The shortest route is through Rampur & Nainital and the other through Bareilly & Haldwani. The majority stretch on both routes is the NH-9 which is in a reasonably good condition. Dhabas: On this route, the town of Gajraula is famous for dhabas. Apart from Bikanerwala , Moga Punjabi Tadka and Bhajan Dhaba are good options.

13. Delhi to Dam Dama Lake (61 km)

Road Condition: This short-distance on the Delhi-Alwar Highway is driveable. It can be congested but should not take you longer than 2 hours to cover. Dhabas: Satya Dhaba and Royal Blue Dhaba are well-known dhabas in the town of Mahipalpur .

14. Delhi to  Corbett National Park (260 km)

Road Condition to Corbett National Park: The route to Corbett National Park is primarily through the NH-9 and takes up to 6 hours. As already mentioned, NH-9 is well maintained and safe. Dhabas:  Gajraula is the best town for dhabas on this route. Bikanerwala, Moga Punjabi Tadka and Bhajan Dhaba are the top 3 picks.

15. Delhi to  Narkanda (406 km)

Road Condition to Narkanda: While a non-stop journey could take up to 9 hours, there are many towns on the way that could make for good stop-overs. The best route to Narkanda is through Kalka and Shimla .  Dhabas: There are many dhabas on this route. For the best Kheema Kaliji and Mutton Masala, stop by at Puran Singh ka Dhaba in Ambala . 

16. Delhi to  Amritsar (449 km)

Road Condition to Amritsar: The best route to Amritsar is the NH-44 which will run through Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Ludhiana and Jalandhar . The route is well-maintained, promising wide roads. If you choose not to stop at any of these places, you should reach in about 8 hours.  Dhabas: Apart from great food in Ambala, Mayur Dhaba in Karnal is well known for good food. Ludhiana and Jalandhar are famous for great local Punjabi dhabas. Bansi Vaishno Dhaba in Ludhiana is a famous vegetarian dhaba that is worth trying.

17. Delhi to  Gwalior (351km)

Road condition: A driver’s paradise, the Yamuna Expressway also connects Delhi to Gwalior. The journey should not take more than 7 hours. There are no gas stations on the expressway so you’ll have to replenish fuel near tolls or will have to make small de-routes if necessary. Dhabas: The Yamuna Expressway has no dhabas or food-joints. Eateries can be found near tolls when you need a stopover.

18. Delhi to  Dehradun (245 km)

Road Condition to Dehradun: The recommended, yet slightly longer route is the Grand Trunk Road/NH1 which is well maintained and a pleasure to drive on. The shorter Saharanpur route must be avoided. Dhabas: While Murthal is a great grub spot giving you options like Sukhdev Dhaba, Haveli and Gulshan Dhaba, there are many other dhaba options on this route. The Grand Trunk Road is famous for being a dhaba haven.

19. Delhi to  Kuchesar (130 km)

Road Condition to Kuchesar: NH-9 is the best route to Kuchesar and takes up to 2.5 hours. NH-9 is well maintained and safe. Your journey may be shorter if you’re leaving from North Delhi and choose to take the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, to join the NH-9 eventually. Dhabas: A little known treasure, Shiva Tourist Dhaba makes for a great stopover in Babugarh .

20. Delhi to  Karnal (118 km)

Road Condition to Karnal: The only route to Karnal is through NH-44 and can take up to 3 hours to reach. It is well-maintained and not too problematic. Dhabas: Murthal remains your go-to grub location on this route too. Do try Jhilmil Dhaba apart from those already recommended here.

21. Delhi to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary (48 KM)

Head to the 'Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary' and take a day off from your busy schedule. It indeed is the best trips that you can plan. The sanctuary is close to Delhi so you can finish the whole trip in a day. The place is known for its diversity of birds and the winter season brings in many migratory species around.

Route: One can take either the Dabri- Gurgaon Road route or they can opt to travel via National Highway 9 to reach the destination. Highlights: The Park, Migratory Birds Dhabas : Sialkoti Dhaba in Sadar Bazaar, Gurgaon is a must-try.

22. Delhi to Landour (300 KM)

Route: Saharanpur Road via Mandaula- Bhainsi- Kuthal Gaon Highlights: Dehradun, Mossy Falls, Sisters Bazaar Dhabas : Cheetal is a Dhaba on the Expressway near Khatauli that one should visit for a little break. 

23. Delhi to Jaisalmer (800 KM)

Route: NH11 via Rohtak – Bhiwani – Churu – Bikaner – Phulodi Highlights: Jaisalmer Fort, Desert, Moti Mahal, Gadisar Lake Dhabas : Hotel Midway in Behror is a fantastic restaurant run by the Rajasthan Tourism Department. 

24. Delhi to Spiti (710 KM)

Route : Delhi - Shimla - Narkanda - Rampur - Kalpa - Nako - Dhankar - Pin Valley - Kaza Highlights : Giu Village, Tabo Village, Pin Valley Park, Kaza Dhabas :Chilika Dhaba, Samaroh, Amrik Sukhdev, Sharma Dhaba

25. Delhi to Manali (540 KM)

Route: NH 44 and 154 via Ambala Chandigarh Route - Banur - Palampur - Shimla Highlights: Panipat, Chandigarh, Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary, Rewalsar Lake Dhabas: The Lake View, Hotel Sagar View, Bhimu Dhaba, Fauji Dhaba

7.00 am – 8.00 am : Capture the most iconic attractions on the Rajpath

We recommend visiting the Red Fort, once the seat of the Mughal Empire, going to Humayun's Tomb, the inspiration of Taj Mahal, and listening to the chanting in old temples, like Jama Masjid and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.

Delhi also offers many a good chance to taste authentic Indian curry and other Indian delicacies, to watch an amazing Indian dancing and singing show, to take part in an Indian cooking class , and to explore local markets.

It usually takes 1–3 days to do the top activities in Delhi. If you have more than 3 days, we recommend you journey out of Delhi to places like Agra (where the Taj Mahal is) and Jaipur.

A Classic Delhi Itinerary: 1–3 Days

Generally, 2 days is a suitable stay length for Delhi : one day for arrival, one for classic city sightseeing, and a day tour to uncover the essence of Delhi culture.

3 days will let you travel in a more relaxed pace and explore Delhi's suburbs.

Day 1 : Arrival day. You could rest and adjust to jet lag or explore freely to settle in.

Day 2 : Explore Delhi's highlights. Visit the Red Fort and Jama Masjid Mosque. Take a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk market. Go to Qutub Minar and Humayun's Tomb.

Day 3 : Explore Delhi based on your interests. If you like culture and temples, visit some special temples like Lotus Temple (a Bahá'í temple), Gurudwara Bangla Sahib (a Sikh temple), and Laxminarayan Temple (a Hindu temple). If you're traveling with kids, you could go to fun parks (like Adventure Island) or somewhere educational, like the Museum of Toilets.

A Delhi and Nearby Cities Itinerary: 4–7 Days

If you have more time, exploring the popular cities near Delhi is recommended, and it is most travelers' choice. Agra and Jaipur , close to Delhi, are the most popular destinations. Together they're known as the ' Indian golden triangle ' — the No. 1 itinerary for India travelers, especially for first timers.

The biggest attraction in Agra is the Taj Mahal . Jaipur, the pink city, is India's most famous ancient city. Its grand palaces and forts like Hawa Mahal and Amber Fort are the highlights, and its heritage hotels are also of interest to many tourists.

Days 1–2 : Delhi exploration. Discover the most popular attractions. Visit all of the three UNESCO heritage sites: the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Humayun's Tomb. Go to Jama Masjid mosque, and take a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk market.

Days 3–4 : Agra discovery. After 5 hours' driving from Delhi to Agra, visit Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb (Baby Taj) and 'Moonlight Garden'. Explore the famous Taj Mahal and Agra Fort the next day.

Days 5–6 : Jaipur experience. Following 5 hours' driving from Agra to Jaipur, go to City Palace, where the king of Jaipur now lives. Visit Hawa Mahal ('Palace of Winds') and Amber Fort. Take an Indian cooking class.

Day 7 : Return to Delhi from Jaipur for your departure

Delhi is divided into old and new districts, known as New Delhi and Old Delhi.

New Delhi is more recommended as an area to stay . The environment in New Delhi is clean and tidy. There is lots of choice of hotels and restaurants. It is also closer to attractions.

Old Delhi, which shows more-traditional images of India, is not so recommended for accommodation. It features narrow and chaotic streets and markets. There are some economic hotels, but the choice of hotels is limited.

For business men or travelers who need to catch a flight, staying at the Aerocity hotel area is recommended. It is close to the airport, needing only 10–20 minutes' driving.

October to March has the best times to visit Delhi when the weather is dry and it is not so hot . April, May, and June are the hottest months of the year. The scorching heat could be a challenge. Rainy season is from July to September. But the hot and rainy seasons offer discounts and quieter attractions.

Metro and taxi are the main ways to tour around Delhi. Most attractions can be reached by metro. Calling a taxi using taxi apps or booking online is also a common way to get around.

Auto rickshaw or tuk-tuk is an interesting way to get around Delhi. When you take a tuk-tuk, make sure the driver knows exactly where you're going and negotiate the price to something reasonable.

Delhi's buses are also a way of travel. But they have no English instructions and no arrival announcements, so they're not tourist-friendly.

Without the hassles of hailing a car or planning a route in advance, private transfers could be your best choice , especially when you need to travel to surrounding cities like Agra and Jaipur. A private and safe vehicle will get you there most comfortably and flexibly.

1. Visa : You will need to apply for a tourist e-visa unless you are from a select few neighboring countries like Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

3. Tipping : Tipping is expected. It doesn't matter how much you pay, even 10 rupees.

4. Customs and etiquette : Delhi, typical of India, has a lot of religious customs. Entering a temple usually requires removing shoes, covering the torso to the neck, knees and shoulders (and more ideally), and some temples require covering the head with a turban. Don't touch locals' heads or shake hands with your left hand.

5. Food : Mutton and chicken are the main meats served. 60% of Indians are vegetarians. Most restaurants do not serve alcohol.

There is no doubt that Meghalaya is one of our favourite places. Situated in the hills of the eastern sub-Himalayas, Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful states of India. In Sanskrit, Meghalaya translates into ‘abode of clouds’ and it is rightfully called so. Claimed to be one of the wettest places on the earth, Meghalaya sees the hide and seek played between the sun and rains.

Surrounded by the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills, Meghalaya offers simple and unspoiled beauty to its visitors. The state boasts of incredible natural beauty, cascading waterfalls, sparkling clean rivers, natural caves and a colourful cultural heritage. From the gorgeous waterfalls of Cherrapunjee to the clear waters of Umngot, Meghalaya is literally a place halfway between heaven and earth.

Where is Meghalaya?

Meghalaya is located in the northeastern part of India. Meghalaya was carved out of the state of Assam and shares its borders with Assam and Bangladesh in the west and south.

Meghalaya Trip – Is it safe to visit Meghalaya?

Meghalaya is perhaps one of the safest states that we have visited. The people are friendly and will always be ready to help you.

Meghalaya is also one of the safest places for women to travel. Being a matrilineal society, crimes against women are not much seen here. I have travelled solo in Meghalaya in remote places like Tura without any fear. Meghalaya is one of the states where I feel quite at home during solo travel as well.

How to Reach Meghalaya?

Just like the other northeast states, Guwahati forms the entry point of Meghalaya as well. Shillong is the most important and the capital city of Meghalaya. Your Meghalaya trip will probably start from Shillong itself.

Shillong has a domestic airport that is connected by flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and New Delhi. However, the best way to enter Meghalaya would be to arrive at Guwahati and then move on to Shillong.

The nearest railway head is Guwahati. You will get shared jeeps and cabs just outside the Guwahati Railway Station at Paltan Bazar. You will also get shared jeeps and cabs from Khanapara in Guwahati.  Buses are also available from the ASTC Bus Stand outside the railway station. Regular buses are also available from ISBT, Beltola in Guwahati.

Helicopter services are also available from Guwahati to Shillong. But we recommend you to take the road. Shillong is only 100 km from Guwahati and the roads are pretty good and scenic as it follows an uphill drive through lush greenery.

Local Transport in Meghalaya

Your first stop in Meghalaya trip will perhaps be Shillong. From Shillong, you have to visit different places.

Moving around Shillong

Buses and Yellow Taxis are available for travelling to various destinations in the city. Tourist Taxis are available in Shillong for local sightseeing as well as for long-distance tours.

The Main Taxi Stand is at the Police Bazar Stand. From here you will get shared yellow taxis to different destinations in the city. City buses are also available for going around in Shillong.

The Meghalaya Tourism Office is located at Police Bazar itself. You can book city tours and various other sightseeing tours from there. They conduct tours to Cherrapunjee, Mawlynnong, Dawki and other places as well. You can also hire cars for going around from the Tourism Office.

Moving around towns in Meghalaya

You can hire cars for travelling to various destinations in Meghalaya from the Police Bazar Taxi Stand.

If you want to travel by shared vehicles, the Sumos are available from Bara Bazar Sumo Stand near Ïewduh. Shared Sumos to other destinations like Dawki, Kongthong, Nongstoin are also available from there.

For offbeat places, the number of shared jeeps is quite less. So if you want to travel around Meghalaya by shared vehicles, keep some time in hand and get to know about the vehicle timings beforehand.

Bike Renting at Shillong

You can explore Meghalaya on a bike just like we did and enjoy the adventure on the road. The main roads are quite good in Meghalaya and riding is quite enjoyable. Shillong has a number of bike rentals from where you can get scooters and motorbikes for hire.

The rental agencies usually take a deposit amount depending on your ride and you also have to submit one of your Identity proof in original there. They will return the ID once you return the bike. They also provide one helmet with the bike. You can also ask for another helmet at a nominal extra cost.

The rate for scooty or scooter is INR 600-800 per day (without petrol)

For Bikes, it is INR 1000-1200 per day, and for Royal Enfield, the rental is usually INR 1500-1800 per day.

What is the Best time to visit Meghalaya?

Meghalaya has a tropical climate. The best time to visit is the winter months from October to March. But if you want to see the waterfalls in their full glory, visit at the end of the rainy season or just after it, i.e between August to the beginning of October.

Meghalaya is one such place in India that is beautiful in all the seasons. While our favourite time to visit is during the monsoon, the other seasons are equally enchanting. When you want to go for a Meghalaya trip actually depends on what you want to do.

April to June (Summer)

The weather is agreeable during this time and the temperature remains cool. Summer is definitely a peak season for a Meghalaya trip. This is a good time to go outdoors and explore. This is also a good time to do caving. However, the waterfalls will have less water. The Seven Sister Waterfalls in Cherrapunjee can be hardly seen during this time. It looks like small strips of water cascading down the mountain cliff, during the summer.

July to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon arrives in Meghalaya in June itself. However, from July it is peak monsoon. Since Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on earth, it receives a lot of rainfall. Monsoon in Meghalaya is simply beautiful. Everything looks lush and green and the waterfalls get a life of their own. The clouds and fod renders a mystique and charm to the place.

Cherrapunjee and Mawsynram are particularly beautiful during this time. However, you will probably not get the clear water at Umngot River at Dawki during this time. Caving is also not recommended during this time.

In short, if you love to travel during the rain, we would definitely recommend you for a Meghalaya trip. However, be prepared for bouts of showers every now and then. Also, do carry your rain wear during this time.

October to November (Autumn)

This is one of the best seasons to visit Meghalaya. The rains have stopped, but the after effects of rain are still there with greenery everywhere and lively waterfalls. The weather is sunny and cool, perfect for outdoor activities and treks.

December to February (Winter)

The weather remains comfortably cold; however, the days are a bit warm. The mornings are usually foggy. Winters are also a good time to explore and do all the outdoor activities like trekking and caving. This is also a good time to visit Dawki. You will see the crystal clear waters of the river for which Dawki is so famous for.

Places to visit in your Meghalaya Trip

1) shillong.

Shillong, the capital of the state is a busy, trendy and energetic city with a vibrant population. There is a lot of British influence in the architecture of Shillong. With the beautiful hills around and the number of lakes, Shillong is referred to as the ‘Scotland of East’ . Police Bazar is the busiest point in Shillong with a busy marketplace. Most of the major hotels in Shillong are found around Police Bazar. You can use cozycozy to find a cheap accommodation for your trip to Meghalaya. Shillong has some fine cafes that also offer music. Shillong is the place of music lovers.

Attractions in Shillong:  Plenty of places to visit here – Ward’s Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Shillong Golf Course, Smit, Laitlum Canyons, Bishop & Beadon falls and Umiam Lake.

2) Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji or Cherrapunjee , also known as Sohra is located around 60 km from Shillong. You can visit Cherrapunji from Shillong and come back in a day. There are tours conducted by the Meghalaya Tourism for Cherrapunji. But we recommend a night stay at the place. Shared cabs to Cherrapunjee are available from Bada Bazar in Shillong. The Yellow Sumos take you to different places in  Meghalaya.

Cherrapunjee was said to be the wettest place on earth before Mawsynram took over. Naturally, the place is amazing during the monsoons.

Attractions in Cherrapunji: The Nohkalikai Waterfalls is the fourth highest waterfall in the world and makes for a grand sight. The Seven Sister Falls, Wei Sawdong Falls and Dainthlein Falls are also worth visiting. The Mawsmai and Arwah caves are other places that you should visit. Amazing stalactites and stalagmite formations are found in these caves.

From Cherrapunji, you can visit Mawsynram, the wettest place on the earth and the Khasi monoliths.

3) Nongriat Trek

The fascinating experience of Cherrapunjee is the visit to the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat village. The route from Tyrna is the easier one to reach Nongriat, but you have to descend as many as 3500 steps to reach the village. Once you are at Nongriat, the trouble will seem nothing compared to the views and hospitality you will receive there. It is advisable to stay for a night at Nongriat if you wish to do the Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek .

4) Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is declared to be the cleanest village in Asia . The place is around 80 km from Shillong and a trip to Mawlynnong and Dawki can be done in a day keeping your base at Shillong. Like Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya Tourism conducts tours to Mawlynnong as well. Mawlynnong has a number of homestays as well where you can stay for the night.

The village is extremely clean and well-maintained, having bamboo dustbins at places. With greenery all around and colourful flowers and orchids blooming, Mawlynnong simply looks amazing.

Attractions in Mawlynnong: There is another single decker Living root bridge in Riwai village. There is a balancing rock that you can visit. The Skywatch is a tall bamboo structure that allows you to climb atop and have gorgeous views of the Bangladesh plains from there.Mawlynnong Asia’s cleanest village

5) Mawphlang

Around 45 km from Shillong, the Mawphlang Sacred Groves is situated in the East Khasi Hills. Once you reach the place, you can see rolling green plains, dense forests amidst the backdrop of blue skies. You can get a shared sumo to Mawphlang as well. There are accommodation options at Mawphlang in case you want to stay there for the night. A sacred grove is a small forest area considered sacred by the Khasi tribe. The sacred grove usually has a number of medicinal plants and herbs and exotic plant species.

Mawphlang is also the starting point of the David Scott Trail .

All the beautiful pictures of reflections of country boats on crystal clear water that you have seen are probably taken at the Umngot River in Dawki. Situated on the border of Bangladesh, Dawki is the last town on the Indian side before the Bangladesh border. You can reach Dawki by a shared Sumo from Bada Bazar in Shillong.

You can stay at Dawki or move forward to Shnongpdeng, another beautiful hamlet on the banks of Umngot River. There are a number of homestays at Shnongpdeng and camping options are also available at both Dawki and Shnongpdeng .

Attractions at Dawki & Shnongpdeng : A number of water activities like country boat ride, scuba diving, cliff jumping and fishing.

Offbeat places to visit in Meghalaya Trip

1) Mawlyngot

Mawlyngot is a beautiful village amidst green tea gardens and a serene atmosphere. The tea gardens, tea factories are places of interest here. Read more about our experiences at Mawlyngot.

2) Mawlyngbna

Mawlyngbna is a place for adventure seekers. The Travellers Nest is the only place of accommodation here. Situated amidst the forests, the Travellers nest has only two cottages. Camping can also be arranged here. You can go trekking, visit the waterfalls and go kayaking in the lake.

3) Kongthong

Kongthong is a very interesting place in Meghalaya. Situated between two famous ridges, getting to Kongthong is an adventure in itself. The unique culture of Kongthong’s inhabitants is they do not call out to each other using their names, they instead sing out names that are given to every individual of the village at childhood. Kongthong is also known as the Whistling Village of Meghalaya.

Umden is situated in the Ri-Bhoi district and is known for its eri silk production. Here you can witness all the steps in sericulture starting from rearing of silkworms to spinning and reeling of silk to yarn production and dyeing and finally to weaving. The village itself is really beautiful nestled in a serene valley.

5) Nongkhnum Island

The road to Nongkhnum Island is long, but the view that you get here compensates all your trouble. It is the largest river island in Meghalaya and is situated near Nongstoin. The island with clear waters of the river is a serene place with hardly any soul. You can also go camping on the river island.

6) Tura, Garo Hills

Tura is the second most important city in Meghalaya after Shillong. Located in the Garo hills, Tura offers great eco-tourism options and the wildlife sanctuaries in this area have interesting wildlife. Siju Caves, one of the longest cave systems in India, also lies close to Tura.

Overnight Buses to Tura are available from Shillong Polo Ground. Sumos are also available in the morning. Tura is also accessible from Guwahati. Hotels and homestays are available in Tura.

Attractions in Tura: The entire Garo Hills are full of many interesting places. The Tura peak, Nokrek National Park, Rongbang Dar Waterfall are few of the places near Tura worth visiting. Other interesting places include the majestic Balpakram National Park and gorge, Pelga Falls, Siju Caves and Naphak Lake.

Know the People of Meghalaya

Places become livelier because of its people. Meghalaya is no exception. The place is the home to three tribes – Khasi, Jaintia and the Garos. The Khasis occupy the Khasi hills of central Meghalaya, the Garos occupy the western Garo Hills while the Jaintias occupy the Jaintia hills of eastern part of the state.

At present most of the tribes have embraced Christianity, but they have not forgotten their age-old customs. A common trait of the three tribes in Meghalaya is that they predominantly follow a matrilineal system where lineage and inheritance are passed through women of a family. The state has a liking to music and that can be seen in numerous rock bands.

All the three tribes are quite close to nature. They have preserved their ancient forests and groves. Their harmony with nature can be seen in the numerous root bridges that are found across the state.

The people are also quite fond of music and dance and that can be reflected in their festivals. The Khasi and Jaintia tribes praise nature, land, waterfalls, hills and rivers in their songs. The Garo folk songs are mostly based on agriculture, marriage, daily life and special events.

What to Eat in your Meghalaya Trip?

If you are a foodie, then you will definitely love Meghalaya.  Jadoh is the staple food in the Khasi region and is easily available. Various preparations of pork, fish and chicken are also available here.  If you want some great Khasi cuisine in Shillong, I would recommend you to head to Trattoria. This is a small eatery in Police Bazar and serves delectable Jadoh and other Khasi dishes. Food is relatively cheap in Meghalaya.

You can also check out the cafes in Shillong. They serve great coffee and food items.

For the rest of the tourist destinations, there are small restaurants and eateries all along where you will get good food. Do not expect fancy restaurants in these places other than Shillong. In the smaller places and villages, you will probably stay at homestays and your food will be arranged by your homestay.

Vegetarian fares are also available in Meghalaya. Please note that Meghalaya, like the other northeastern states, are predominantly non-vegetarian. So in most of the places, you will get a variety of non-veg items. Vegetarian items will be present, but you might not get a variety there.

Rice is an important part of their diet. They make a preparation of sticky rice and have it for breakfast. Lunch and dinner also comprises of rice.

Where to stay during the Meghalaya trip?

You can stay at hotels or homestays in your Meghalaya trip.

Shillong and Cherrapunji have a number of hotels of various budgets. You will also find homestays and hostels in Shillong. Homestays are also available in Cherrapunji.

For places like Mawlynnong, Dawki, Kongthong and others, you have to rely on homestays.

How much does it cost on a Meghalaya Trip?

Meghalaya, in general, is quite cheap and it is easy to backpack across the state spending as less as INR 800-1000 per day. You can even spend less. Hostels are available in Shillong. Local transport and food at local eateries are cheap.

If your budget is higher, there are high end hotels for stay and you can travel in luxury by car.

Meghalaya is famously known as the “Abode of clouds” and is mainly famous for being the home to the wettest place on earth. Meghalaya is also famous for its waterfalls, caves, living root bridges and colourful festivals. The state is also famous for its large variety of orchids.

5 days are ideal for a Meghalaya trip where you will visit the major attractions of the state. You can spend 2 days in Shillong, 1 day in Cherrapunji and another day in Mawlynnong (the cleanest village in Asia) and Dawki. You can compress your Meghalaya trip to 3 to 4 days by planning efficiently, but it will be a rush.

Meghalaya is one of the safest places to travel in India, especially for solo women travellers. Meghalaya follows a matrilineal society, which means that the family lineage is taken from the mother’s side. Women are empowered and crimes against women are not usually seen. The locals are helpful to tourists and so is the local police force.

Meghalaya is an all-weather destination. However, the best time to visit is during the summer (April to June) and during the Autumn (October to November) when the weather remains cool and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities.

Meghalaya is quite cheap to travel. You will find hostels in Shillong and homestays at cheaper rates. Food and local transport are also quite cheap. For a backpacking Meghalaya trip, you can spend as little as Rs800-1000 per day or even less.

Meghalaya is famous for bamboo handicraft items. Shillong has a number of shops where you will find handicraft items. You can also buy stoles and shawls. Various organic products like spices, honey and tea are grown in Meghalaya that you can buy.

For spring and summer, wear light cotton clothes preferably during the day. For monsoons, you must carry your raincoats and rain jackets and proper shoes. Winters are quite chilly, so carry your woolens and jackets. Meghalaya is quite a fashionable state. Men and women are tuned into the latest fashion trends. So you can wear anything within the range of propriety.

Hello! Thanks for writing to us. Yes, you can cover Meghalaya on rented scooty or bike. The r oads are pretty good between Shillong and Cherrapunjee. There might be some bad patches, but it is not difficult to ride and drive around Meghalaya.

Just 1 question though: do you suggest we book a cab for the entirety of the trip from Shillong itself? Or, do we book different cabs at different points? In that way, you do not have to think of the next transport option. Just a suggestion, try to book cabs from Meghalaya, and not from Assam. Have a wonderful trip!

There’s a whole world out there in the east of India which remains unexplored by me and it is such a pity! I can’t believe I have been around the country, from the North to the West to the South but never made it to Meghalaya. I have, of course, heard a lot about Shillong and Cherrapunji but Mawlynnong also looks like a great place to go, especially the living root bridge! Also, the river in Dawki looks so beautiful, I’d love to take a boat ride across it.

Day 0: Arrive in Delhi | Day at Leisure

Any trip to India inadvertently starts in the capital of India, Delhi because it’s extremely well connected with almost all the major countries and cities across the world. All major airlines have their flights operating to and from Indira Gandhi International Airport. Plus, Delhi gives easy access to the major states and cities in India via air, rail, and road.

Your arrival time in Delhi depends upon the flight you choose. You can plan your arrival day accordingly. We’d recommend checking into your hotel or apartment, relaxing, taking time to adapt to your new time zone, and then maybe taking a stroll around the area nearby to get the vibe of the city.

Where to stay in Delhi? If you go by our suggestion, Connaught Place is the best area to stay. It’s easy to navigate the city from here as it’s the center of the city. The Claridges , The Imperial , Bloomrooms , and CP Villa are some of our choice of properties in Central Delhi.

How to get around Delhi? The best way to get around Delhi has to be Delhi Metro. It’s easy, quick, affordable, and efficient. Day 1: Explore Old Delhi

Kick off your day with an authentic south Indian breakfast at Saravana Bhavan or Andhra Bhawan .

Wherever we travel, we genuinely want to see the city or country beyond the image that photojournalists often create. And that’s why we want to know where to seek the soul of the city. Well, the soul of Delhi lies in Old Delhi or Purani Dilli. No wonder it’s one of the top bucket list destinations in India .

Every nook and cranny of the old city unfolds the stories of the past. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built Shahjahanabad, the seventh city of Delhi in 1639 that’s now known as Old Delhi.

A walk through this part of the city is perfect to get a sneak into the heritage, culture, history, and food of Delhi.

Your first stop is Jama Masjid . The red sandstone mosque showcases impressive Indo-Islamic architecture and is known for being the largest mosque in India.

Check out one of the historical gurudwaras in Delhi, Sis Ganj Sahib . It was constructed in 1783 to commemorate the martyrdom of the 9th Sikh guru, Guru Teg Bahadur who was beheaded here on the orders of the cruelest Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1675.

Next up is Red Fort or Lal Qila . The ancient fort had been a seat for Mughal Empire and is now one of the most significant monuments in India. The Prime Minister of India hoists the National Flag and addresses the people of India from its ramparts every year on 15th August, the Independence Day of India. An absolute fusion of Islamic, Persian, Timurid, and Hindu architecture, the red sandstone fort is grand in every sense and features stunning palaces, pavilions, and mosques.

Come back in the evening for the impressive sound and light show, Son-et-Lumiere . The timings of the show differ with the season.

It’s time to take on the most awaited activity of the day. Explore the heart of Old Delhi, Chandani Chowk. Walk past or ride past (hire a tuk-tuk) the cramped, colorful, and flavorful bazaars of Chandani Chowk. As you walk through the narrow lanes, you discover something new and exciting with each twist and turn. That’s the beauty of Old Delhi. Dariba Kalan (famous for silver jewelry), Khari Baoli (the largest wholesale spice market in Asia) , Katra Neel (ethenic wear), and Bhagirath Palace (the largest wholesale electrical products market in Asia) are some of the best markets in Chandani Chowk.

If you love all things rustic like us, don’t forget to dig into the offbeat corners of Chandani Chowk like Naughara Gali  (elaborate and vibrant architecture) and Ghalib ki Haveli .

Also, you just can’t explore Chandani Chowk and not savor the intricate delicacies in Old Delhi. You know, one can only discover Old Delhi through its food 🙂 It’s best to take one of the guided food walks for a unique culinary experience. Day 2: Explore New Delhi

What do you think about the day 1 exploration? How did you like the mayhem of noises, colors, smells, and sights? Today, you are going to see an altogether different side of Delhi. You are heading to New Delhi. If Old Delhi is an assault on the senses, New Delhi is a feast for them.

Have a tummyful and soulful breakfast at Mister Chai or Cafe Lota . Start your sightseeing tour with Gurudwara Shri Bangla Sahib. Comfortably located in the center of Delhi, the gurdwara isn’t just known for being one of the largest Sikh shrines in the world but also for its stunning architecture. And once tasted, you can never forget Kada Prasad’s taste.

Make headway to Lutyens Delhi, a swanky and posh area that’s not only home to high-profile people like top politicians including the Prime Minister of India and leading industrialists of the country but also boasts broad roads, grand avenues, iconic landmarks, stunning monuments, important government buildings, world-class museums, and almost all the embassies. It presents the colonial past and heritage of India.

Start your tour at Rajpath, the broadest avenue in the city. As you walk the area, you’ll pass by Agrasen ki Baoli (historic stepwell), Rashtrapati Bhawan (President’s Palace), North Block, and South Block (home to the most important ministries of the Government of India), Parliament of India, India Gate, Janpath, and Connaught Place (main shopping district of Delhi).

India Gate is one of the most iconic moments in Delhi. The archway (inscribed with the names of soldiers who chose martyrdom for the nation) commemorates the Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during World War I. Withing walking distance of the India Gate is the newly constructed National War Memorial . The memorial walls adorn the names of soldiers killed in various operations of Independent India. The memorial also has the Amar Jawan Jyoti, the eternal flame that burns day and night to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Indo-Pakistan War in 1971 and other operations after.

This part of Delhi is home to some of the best museums in India. If you are a museum enthusiast and have time for only one museum then I’d urge you to visit the National Museum of India . With its vast display of 200,000 artifacts (Indian as well as foreign), the museum is known to be a great place to unearth the world’s rich cultural heritage.

The entire tour of Lutyen’s Delhi will take around 3 to 4 hours. If you want a break from sightseeing and looking for a place to have lunch nearby, look no further than Gulati . They serve the best North Indian food.

Now that you are recharged, head to Lodhi Gardens, an oasis of peace and tranquility in an otherwise chaotic city. This isn’t just a green open space but a treasure trove of history. Yes! Some beautiful ancient monuments inside the park are -the tomb of Mohammed Shah, the Tomb of Sikandar Lodi, Sheesh Gumbad, Bara Gumbad, and Athpula Bridge.

About 900 meters from the gardens is Lodhi Art District , the first-ever open-air art district in India. Street art lovers will enjoy the stroll.

Enjoy a cup of tea (of your choice) at Mittal Tea House .

After a much-needed dose of caffeine, check out two of the most beautiful garden tombs in Delhi – Safdarjung Tomb and Humayun’s Tomb . A combination of art, history, and beauty; both monuments are famous among Instagrammers. You can’t get enough of them.

There are quite a few super fast trains and buses available from Agra to Jaipur but you are going to hire a car and driver for this part of your trip as you’ve to explore two of the amazing places to stop by on the way: Fatehpur Sikri , Keoladeo Ghana National Park , & Chand Baori on the way to Jaipur.

Your first stop on the way is Fatehpur Sikri .  Located at a distance of 37 km from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is a walled city built by Mughal Emperor Akbar to honor a Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chisti. The city served as the capital of the Mughal empire for a short period of time before he abandoned it because of the acute water shortage.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the walled fortification features Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Tomb of Salim Chisti, Jodha Bai’s Palace, Diwan-Khas, Panch Mahal, Birbal’s House, Khwabgah, and many more structures.

The next stopover on today’s itinerary is one of the best national parks in India and the finest bird sanctuaries in the world, Keoladeo Ghana National Park (formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary). It takes about 25 to 30 minutes to reach the national park from Fatehpur Sikri. A royal hunting ground during the 1850s, Keoladeo was declared a national park in 1982 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

From basking pythons, nilgai, and deer, to spotted owls, painted storks, and more, the park is home to more than 370 species of birds and animals. The national park has many routes to choose from and it can be explored either on foot or by cycle, or by rickshaw. An architectural wonder, this ancient stepwell is one of the largest and deepest step wells in India. Over 3500 meticulously carved steps descend 20 meters down 913 stories) to reach the water level.

Out of all the attractions you see inside, Pritam Niwas Chowk with its ornate doors, and Chhavi Niwas in Chandra Mahal remain our favorites. They are gorgeous! You’d need to pay the additional amount for an entry to Chandra Mahal. It’s quite a cost but worth every penny.

Next door to the City Palace is the Jantar Mantar , a huge astronomical observatory built by Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur between 1728 and 1734. It has over 19 stone instruments including Samrat Yantra, the largest stone sundial in the world. Even today, the instruments are considered to be accurate to perfection and are still used to calculate the movements of the sun and other celestial bodies.

Head over to Hawk View Restaurant & Bar for lunch.

After a break for lunch, we recommend exploring the fascinating bazaars of Jaipur. You’ll find shops and tiny stalls selling everything from local handicrafts to traditional wear to silver jewelry to lac bangles to mojris.

And don’t forget to try the amazing street food while strolling around the markets. We recommend traditional lassi at Lassiwala , a cup of masala chai at Gulab Ji Chai Wale , and pyaaz kachori at Rawat Mishthan Bhandar .

To end the day, we suggest dining at Peacock Restaurant . This open-air patio restaurant is a stunning space adorned with peacock-themed paintings, plants, and dim outdoor lighting. It serves amazing Indian as well as global cuisine.

Day 9: Jaipur to Shekhawati | Explore Shekhawati

This morning we suggest rising early (as we always do) for an exciting trip to Shekhawati. A northeastern region of Rajasthan, Shekhawati comprises Sikar, Jhunjhunu, and Churu. Shekhawati is famous for its elaborate Havelis. A true haven for art and architecture lovers, the region promises a beautiful ride.

Maharao Shekhaji founded the region. He inherited his father’s estate of Amarsar in Amer and enjoyed the reputation and power that wasn’t taken positively by the Kachhwaha rulers of Amber. He fought against them to get his independent state. That’s when Shekhawati came into existence.

Located on the Silk Route, the region has been an important meeting point for merchants from the Middle East, India, and China. The merchants (Marwaris) built palatial Havelis as a tribute to their ancestors and of course, to showcase their opulence. They commissioned artists and paid them lavishly to paint the mansions. The beautiful frescoes of Shekhawati gave the region the title of Open Art Gallery of Rajasthan .

How to get to Shekhawati from Jaipur? The best way to travel between Jaipur and Shekhawati region is by chauffeur-driven car. The region has many towns and villages scattered at a distance. The best towns to witness the gorgeous ancient Havelis or mansions of the region are Nawalgarh , Mandawa , Mahansar , Fatehpur , Dundlod , Mukundgarh , Ramgarh , and Churu .

How to get around Shekhawati? Getting from one town or village to another is only possible by chauffeur-driven vehicle.

Where to stay in Shekhawati? It’s best to stay in Mandawa owing to its central location. Hotel Shekhawati and Mandawa Kothi in Mandawa are highly rated properties.

You just have a day to explore the artistic and vibrant region of Rajasthan so it’s vital to plan your itinerary beforehand. Here’s the itinerary you can follow: Jaipur – Nawalgarh – Dundlod – Mukundgarh – Mandawa

Start early from Jaipur (you can have your breakfast and lunch on the way) and drive all the way to Mandawa while making stopovers at Nawalgarh, Dundlod, and Mukundgarh.

Holi is celebrated in most parts of India, though north India does it best. The towns of Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, Mathura, and Vrindavan in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh are world-famous for their Holi celebrations. They celebrate Holi on quite a large scale and in their own diverse ways that can go chaotic and messy, especially if you don’t know how to handle it.

Phoolon wali Holi (Flowers’ Holi) at the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan is beautiful and unique. It takes place for just about 20 minutes at around 4 pm in the evening, a day before Holi. But then again, the temple can get super crowded and you need to practice caution.

Jaipur, Udaipur, and Pushkar in Rajasthan also celebrate Holi in style and are safe for travelers from all around the world to enjoy this colorful Indian festival.

If you are traveling with kids, I’d highly recommend you experience Udaipur Holi. The city is popular among international travelers during Holi. It’s a 2-day grand celebration – Holika Dahan (bonfire) ritual is practiced the night before Holi and the next morning people gather on the streets and play with colors.

In fact, many hotels and resorts in Udaipur offer private Holi celebrations for their international guests that include colors, music, and food.

24 Hours in Delhi – The Perfect One Day in Delhi Itinerary

I know that, for some, Delhi can be a nightmare. You see all these pretty pictures in the brochure, which is why you wanted to visit. But, instead, you land off the plane and jump into the manic, crazy, hot, dirty, and loud capital of India!

Well, a warm welcome to you. But, I have some good news, you don’t have to stay long if you don’t want to!

Outside of Delhi, is where your real Indian adventures will begin with places like the Taj Mahal in Agra , Jaipur in Rajasthan , or even Varanasi by the river Ganges but I would encourage you to spend at least a day in Delhi to ‘acclimatise’. Even if it’s just to get used to the smells.

It definitely is possible to do a whistle-stop tour of this diamond in the rough (okay, really rough) and see pretty much everything there is to see as a tourist.

Personally, I love Delhi. When I was living and working here as an ex-pat, it was my go-to place for a weekend of sightseeing.

For me, I need to be culture-shocked when I travel and my thirst for the unusual seems to be getting more, not less as I’m getting older.

I find my eyes can’t stop looking around at the crazy traffic, seeing what the street food vendors are selling, admiring the vibrant colours of the market places and the life that runs through the veins of this awesome city.

It’s kind of like marmite, you either love it or you hate it! Here’s how to spend 24 hours in Delhi.

Getting around Delhi

Delhi is huge and many of its attractions are spread out over the old city.

Personally, I would suggest hiring a taxi or a Tuk-Tuk for a full-day tour. That way, it’s easy to hop in and out of the different attractions.

Plus, if you’ve just landed off the plane, you’ll probably prefer convenience to help with the jet lag.

Alternatively, you can get stuck on the public transport on offer.

I love working out train lines and Delhi’s is quite easy once you master it. The metro is a fast and cheap option that gets you around the city quickly.

But, it’s BUSY and a little hectic. If you’ve ever been on the underground in London, imagine it being rush hour, all day, every day.

It does get extremely crowded and so you have to be a little forceful to get out at the right stop.

Don’t be afraid to shout MA’AF KIJI (excuse me in Hindi) and you’ll get through the crowds okay!

Tickets depending on the length of your journey can cost you anything between 20-50 rupees a single journey.

How to spend 24 hours in Delhi – a complete one-day in Delhi itinerary

India gate & rajpath.

First up is the iconic landmark of the India Gate. 

Built to commemorate the lost lives of soldiers in the First World War, it has an eternal flame that is always lit underneath.

It’s kind of like the Indian Arc De Triomphe but with people selling chai, chaat, and poppadoms all around it!

It’s one of my favourite places to visit in the day or evening as it’s free and has a peaceful family vibe. The only downside is all the hawkers who seem to ask to take my photo constantly when I’m blatantly holding a DSLR camera!

It’s always super busy in the afternoon, so if you did want to beat the crowds or take pictures without any people in it you should start off early in the morning.

You can take a turn around the gate and explore the parliament buildings in Rajpath which is a little journey up the long ceremonial axis road.

It’s always been somewhere I would have liked to have a picnic as there is a nice grass area around it, but I haven’t yet had the chance (and the weather is always too hot!). Maybe in the winter, I’ll have more luck.

If you did want to get some tacky souvenir pictures, there are always guys selling them near the gate. You should pay no more than 50 rupees per photo.

A little insider tip, if you only want one photo to take away, don’t let the guy take ten! He’ll expect you to want all of them.

Then that 50 rupees will turn into 500! He’ll print them instantly on his little portable photo machine so you don’t have to come back later in the day.

The next place to visit is the Red Fort or in Hindi Lal Qila which means “blessed fort”.

You’ll see this little beauty on the 500 rupees notes you’ll have in your wallet.

The fort, which is built with red sandstone, was a prominent Mughal Emporer residence for over 200 years!

Today, it’s a UNESCO world heritage site and has a collection of historical rooms, buildings, and museums to wander around.

My favourite part was the mixture of Persian, European, and Indian architecture and the many Indian archways which were in perfect symmetry.

It’s really nice just to wander around the gardens here too as they have a mixture of temples and buildings lined with colourful flowers!

Watch out for pickpockets as you’re near the notorious Chandni chowk which is the next stop.

Chandni Chowk

Delhi’s oldest market district is truly starting out at the deep end in terms of that all-important culture shock!

I was actually warned not to come here as even some of my |ndian friends said this place was a little rough.

But, to me, that was like saying ‘don’t press that red button’ so I just HAD to go!

The best way to explore this place is to hire a rickshaw for around 250 rupees and get taken around a grand tour of the place.

It’s congested, smelly, exciting, inspiring, and hectic and it won’t be somewhere you forget in a hurry!

I couldn’t stop sneezing when I first visited as the air is saturated with spice, but the views are totally worth it walking up the dodgy dark stairs.

In fact, the first time I ever went here I almost refused to go up as I thought he was taking us somewhere weird as a scam or something. Just, trust.

Be warned that a lot of the rickshaw drivers work on a commission basis with a lot of the ‘government tourist’ shops in the marketplace.

There are no government shops, it’s a lie to get you to buy stuff at stupid prices.

Basically, the more you buy, the more they get in terms of payment. So, they may keep taking you around until you buy something.

Be assured, it is NOT mandatory for you to buy anything. Just be forceful and say you’re not interested. I

f you did have more time, an awesome way to explore this city is to do the Delhi by cycle tours.

You start out early to beat the heat and you get a little history and culture lesson too. You get water, chai, and breakfast at Karim’s included! For tours and booking see their official website. 

Lunch at Karim’s

My cycle tour was actually how I discovered Karim’s and I’ve been going back ever since.

Featured on the BBC and Lonely Planet, Karim’s is voted one of the best restaurants in all of Asia.

I’m not kidding when I say that people visit from all over the country to get a taste.

Make sure you try their Mutton Korma with their fabulous Roti. Roti is my absolute favourite!

It’s like naan bread, but it’s puffy and it’s the size of your head! It’s also super cheap and has a good hygiene rating – even if the streets around it look foul.

Jama Masjid

After lunch, head into the biggest mosque in all of India. It’s absolutely humungous!

Although this is a place of worship, they seem to run a little bit of industry on tourists and the rules seem to change each time I go.

You should be able to just place your shoes for free outside and go in but they charge weird fees for tourists. They charge for the phone, camera, and shoe sitting.

Even though my phone and camera were not on the show, they still tried to charge me 300 rupees for entry!

It’s a little bit of a con but I guess this is India. Women will also have to cover up completely to go inside.

Don’t worry, if you don’t have appropriate clothing the guys here will give you a floral smock that makes you look like a grandma!

I just picked one that was the least garish. You’ll be walking in bare feet so beware of the floor, it gets HOT.

There should be mats to help with the heat but sometimes they aren’t always there.

You should also be aware you may not be able to enter the mosque during prayer time.

Lotus Temple

It’s a Baha’i place of worship and is open to everyone from all religions and backgrounds and has 27 marble petals to form the shape of a flower.

The architecture has won multiple awards and has become a major tourist site in Delhi that you cannot miss.

The queuing system can be quite intense with people shouting at you in Hindi and ushering you to the side, which I presume meant ‘keep in line’ or ‘move over’.

You’ll be given a shopping bag to keep your shoes in and you should keep this with you at all times.

When you get inside, just stop, sit down and look up! The ceiling and inside of the lotus flower are incredible.

You have to keep complete silence but you’ll be so wow’ed you may be lost for words anyway.

Shopping in Delhi: Janpath market

Shopping at Janpath is my all-time favourite place for souvenirs.

It’s cheap, friendly, and has everything I need as a tourist to take home. I also don’t have to pay an entrance fee like Dili Haat, so I know it won’t be jumped up prices!

You can find everything here from bags, shawls, Ganesh statues, incense, jewellery, and more.

It’s where I go shopping for all my cheap presents to bring back home if I’m stuck on ideas (sorry family and friends haha).

If you were after finer gifts, there is a ‘cottage industry emporium’ which is located to the right of McDonald’s.

It’s expensive, but it showcases top-quality products which are perfect as home decorative items.

Finish the day at Connaught Place

If you’re not dead off your feet and want to head in for some kip to fight off the jet lag, I would suggest going to Connaught place in the evening.

The whitewashed buildings which are formed into a perfect circle houses some of the best nightlife in Delhi.

You’ll have bars, restaurants, cafés, and shopping all here to enjoy.

Connaught place is HUGE and it’s even split into sections from A-Z to help with locating where you want to go. Personal favourites of mine are Lord of the Drinks (even just for the name) and Social.

The best tip I can give you for bars is to look up!

Most of the restaurants and bars here are above the shops below, so you need to look above to find them.

Warning: Connaught place is notorious for being a little dodgy so be careful around the outer circles and always have a means of transport available to you if you do come here late at night. Be careful of pickpockets and people trying to show you directions!

So, that’s your 24 hours in Delhi itinerary

This is the sure-fire way of getting everything you need out of this crazy city in the shortest amount of time.

You should be able to see most things in just one day in Delhi.

If anything on here didn’t take your fancy, there are also the Lodhi gardens if you would like tranquillity, Humayun’s tomb if you wanted a pre-Taj mahal build up and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib to keep you occupied.

Also, I love the Instagram-worthy Agrasen Ki Baoli which is a bit of a hidden gem and supposedly haunted!

The best tip I can give you is to be aware of scams and to go with the flow; Delhi is Delhi and It will always be Delhi!

That’s what I love most about it, It’s gritty but you won’t forget it in a hurry.
