What is travel insurance?

Does travel insurance cover death, how to get accidental death travel insurance, filing a claim, accidental death travel insurance recapped.

Vacations are always exciting. The chance to get out of town, see some new things and explore new places is an opportunity many dreams of. However, traveling is always risky, especially if you intend to undertake activities such as hiking or bungee jumping. Travel insurance can help protect you if things go awry, with coverage such as emergency medical insurance, trip cancellation insurance and accidental death insurance. But do you need travel life insurance — and how does it work? Let's take a look.

There are many different kinds of travel insurance available to customers, and the type you'll need will depend on travel style, destination and how long you'll be away. Generally speaking, here are some of the more common types of travel insurance:

Accidental death insurance .

Baggage delay and lost luggage insurance .

Cancel for Any Reason insurance .

Emergency evacuation insurance .

Medical insurance .

Rental car insurance .

Trip cancellation insurance .

Trip interruption insurance .

» Learn more: How much is travel insurance?

You'll find a few different varieties of coverage within the broader accidental death travel insurance umbrella. Generally speaking, the way that accidental death travel insurance works is that you'll purchase a policy covering the period that you're away. Then, if a covered accident occurs, you or your designated beneficiary will receive the payout from your insurance company. Despite its name, accidental death travel insurance can cover more than just death. Here are some different types of injuries that your insurance policy may cover:

Loss of life.

Loss of speech and/or hearing.

Loss of thumb and index finger on the same hand.

Loss of hand/s.

Loss of foot/feet.

Loss of eye/s.

The amount you'll be paid will be determined by the policy you've purchased and the extent of your injuries. Depending on your policy, your spouse and unmarried children may also be covered against accidental death. You'll also want to be aware that different accidental death travel insurance policies can cover you at different times. Accidental death flight insurance, as you'd suspect, will provide coverage for you while you're flying. Meanwhile, 24-hour accidental death insurance will protect you anytime during your trip. You don't need to be traveling for your policy to be enacted, though there are certain limitations to this. For example, don't expect to be covered while you're in the middle of skydiving. Finally, common carrier accidental death insurance insures you while traveling on any ticketed public transportation. This can be flights, buses, ferries or even trains. » Learn more: What to know before buying travel insurance

Just like there are multiple types of travel insurance, there are various ways to acquire accidental death travel insurance.

Buy a policy

Probably the most common option is to purchase a policy for life insurance from an insurance company. Whether you're looking for accidental death insurance or trip cancellation insurance, you can find policies to cover various issues from providers. Before you buy a plan, be sure to gather as many quotes as possible. Different levels of coverage will affect the cost of your policy, as will your age, travel dates, destination and residency. Websites like Squaremouth can help you find the best policy to suit your needs. For example, Squaremouth compares coverages and costs from a wide variety of providers on a single screen as an aggregator. Expect insurance coverage amounts ranging from $10,000 to $1 million. » Learn more: The best travel insurance companies

Use your credit card

If you hold a travel credit card, you may be eligible to receive accidental death insurance for free. Many different types of credit cards provide trip insurance , including:

Trip cancellation insurance.

Trip delay insurance.

Emergency medical insurance.

Accidental death insurance.

The type of insurance you'll receive will vary greatly depending on which card you hold, so you'll want to read your guide to benefits carefully if this is something you'll be relying on. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® , for example, provides you two types of accidental death insurance. You'll be covered throughout your trip with 24-hour coverage if you charge your travel bookings to the card. The coverage limits and payouts will differ, however, based on when the incident occurs.

Chase's 24-hour travel accident insurance only covers you for the first 30 days you're out of the country.

The Platinum Card® from American Express , meanwhile, will only provide you with common carrier accidental death insurance, though you'll also be covered when en route to and from your common carrier. Terms apply. » Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

The process for making a claim on your insurance will vary based on your provider. For example, you may need to contact a benefits administrator or create a file online. Usually, you'll have a specific period during which you must report the incident, file the claim and complete your documentation. Documents that you can expect to turn in with your claim include the following:

Your completed claim form.

A copy of your travel itinerary.

A police report confirming the accident.

A death certificate.

Have a plan for submitting the required documentation ahead of your trip. » Learn more: Does travel insurance cover medical expenses?

Travel insurance, as a whole, can be a good option for you if you're worried about accidents while you're away from home. Along with emergency medical and trip cancellation insurance, accidental death insurance can provide you and your family coverage when things go wrong. Before buying a policy, however, be sure to check if your credit card already provides complimentary travel life insurance. Doing so can save you money while ensuring you're always protected.

How I Became Obsessed With Accidental Time Travel

The web is awash with ordinary peoples’ stories of “time slips.” Their real magic is what they can tell us about our relationship to time.

accidental travel

By Lucie Elven

This year, I turned 30, a development that came with a breathless sense of dread at time’s passing. It wakes me up in the early mornings: Nocturnal terror breaks through the surface of sleep like a whale breaching for air. My ambition and fear kick in together until I get up, pour myself some water and look out the window at the squid-ink sky and the string of lights along my neighbors’ houses. I lie down again after finding firmer mental ground, dry land.

So when a guy that my friend was seeing evangelized about “time slips” — a genre of urban legend in which people claim that, while walking in particular places, they accidentally traveled back, and sometimes forward, in time — I was a ripe target. Curious and increasingly existential, I Googled these supposed time slips. I found a global community of believers building an archive of temporal dislocations from the present. These congregants gathered in corners of the internet to testify about how, in the right conditions, the dusting of alienation that settles over the world as we age can crystallize into collective fiction.

I was initially skeptical of the vague language that time-slip writers employed to convey experiences I already found dubious: too many uses of foggy words like “blunder” and “sporting”; detail lavished on varieties of hats encountered. But I was drawn in by their secretive tone — I sensed that sharing these anecdotes was compromising, even shameful (“People would laugh at you,” one poster wrote). Disapproval became attraction, and I returned to the message boards throughout the summer.

Here’s a classic that, like the best of these stories, was related secondhand on a paranormal blog: In a Liverpudlian street in 1996, an off-duty policeman named Frank was going to meet his wife, Carol, in a bookshop called Dillons when “suddenly, a small box van that looked like something out of the 1950s sped across his path, honking its horn as it narrowly missed him.” More disorienting still, Frank “saw that Dillons book store now had ‘Cripps’ over its entrance” and that there were stands of shoes and handbags in the window instead of new fiction. The only other person not wearing midcentury dress was a girl in a lime green sleeveless top. As Frank followed her into the old women’s wear boutique, “the interior of the building completely changed in a flash”; it was once again a bookshop.

I found a global community of believers building an archive of temporal dislocations from the present.

As with a spell of déjà vu, the experience was short-lived, and time was regained. According to the blogger’s detective-like report, Cripps “was later determined” to have been a business in the 1950s. In response to Frank’s slip, posters have told their own or related accounts they’ve heard from others: “This happened to my ex-boss, Glyn Jackson in London, England,” one begins. “Glyn’s story is Highly believable as Glyn is person who lacks imagination on such a scale that he could not put together a grade one story for English to save his life.” And on it goes.

I have never appreciated stories about the passage of time. I resent that I won’t ever get back the hours of my life that Richard Linklater stole with “Boyhood” — his two-and-three-quarter-hour film, shot over a 12-year period in which time is the force that overwhelms everything, not least the idea that our own actions drive our life stories. There’s a whole lot of unwelcome profundity there.

Time-slip anecdotes, though fashioned out of the ambient dread of living with the ticking clock, are childlike in their sense of wonder. They are light, playful and irrational, as frivolous and folky as a ghost story if it were narrated by the confused ghost instead of the people it haunts. One poster, as a girl, used to see a woman in a blue bathrobe in her room: “Her hair was long and messy, a reddish brown. I didn’t see her face because she was usually turned away. I used to mistake her for my mom.” Years later, grown up, the poster’s daughter slept in her former bedroom. “One day I realized ... I was wearing the same blue bathrobe,” the mother writes. Paranormal trappings aside, this story speaks to the feeling of whiplash brought on by time’s passing.

Slipping can be significant, as any Freudian will tell you, and these narratives are riddles whose answers might tell us about our relationship to time. I have begun considering the message boards on which they are exchanged to be narrow but important release valves, allowing posters to talk about the feelings that arise from being time-bound: depression, midlife crises, the dysmorphia of living in a human body. What ailed Miss Smith, whose car slid into a ditch after a cocktail party, and who witnessed “groups of Pictish warriors of the late seventh century, ca. 685 AD,” if not an understanding of her smallness in history’s vast expanse? Why did two academics, famous in the time-slip community for writing a book about spotting Marie Antoinette in the Versailles grounds, encounter trees that looked lifeless, “like wood worked in tapestry”? Perhaps in that instant, like the last queen of France’s Ancien Régime, they felt radically out of joint with their present moment.

If you suspend disbelief, you’ll find these threads constitute a philosophical inquiry about the place of the spirit in our physical beings. They debate the merits of subjectivity and objectivity and question the idea that time is a one-lane highway to death. These writers argue that our past and future can suffuse our present, unveiling an epic dimension of our quotidian existences in moments when we slip and, like Frank, feel eternity.

Introduction

Traveling is often associated with careful planning, itineraries, and well-laid-out paths. But what happens when an adventure unfolds unexpectedly? When the best memories are made amidst the unplanned and spontaneous moments? This is the story of the accidental traveler.

In a world filled with guidebooks, travel blogs, and online platforms offering curated travel experiences, it is refreshing to stumble upon the joy of embracing the unknown while on a journey. The accidental traveler sets off on their adventure with an open mind, ready to embrace whatever comes their way. It is an opportunity to break free from the constraints of a rigid plan, allowing serendipity to guide them towards hidden treasures.

Accidental travel can happen in a variety of ways. It may be a missed flight connection that leads to an unexpected layover in a new city. It could be a last-minute decision to explore a nearby village instead of sticking to the original itinerary. It could even be a chance encounter with a local who invites the traveler to experience their unique way of life.

While this type of travel may seem daunting to some, it offers a chance to truly immerse oneself in the richness of different cultures, traditions, and landscapes. The accidental traveler learns to appreciate the beauty of spontaneity, embracing the unfamiliar, and stepping out of their comfort zone.

Join us on a journey of unexpected twists and turns, as we dive into the world of the accidental traveler. Discover the exhilaration of stepping off the beaten path, the challenges faced, and the profound personal growth that can arise from surrendering to the whims of adventure.

The accidental traveler’s story often begins with a desire for exploration and a yearning to discover new places. It is not uncommon for the accidental traveler to have a deep sense of wanderlust that cannot be contained within the boundaries of a traditional travel itinerary.

Some accidental travelers may have initially set out on a meticulously planned trip but found themselves deviating from the intended path. Others may have embarked on their journey with no concrete plan at all, allowing spontaneity and curiosity to guide them.

Often, the accidental traveler’s background includes a love for adventure, a willingness to take risks, and a flexible mindset. They are seekers of diverse experiences and are open to embracing the unknown. This mindset sets them apart from the average traveler, as they possess a unique ability to navigate through unexpected situations with ease and adaptability.

While some may assume that the accidental traveler lacks preparation or knowledge, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The accidental traveler’s preparation lies in their ability to research and gather information about potential destinations, while still remaining open to detours and unforeseen opportunities that may present themselves along the way.

Furthermore, the accidental traveler is not bound by rigid schedules or tour packages. They are free to change course, explore hidden gems, and immerse themselves in local cultures. These travelers often seek the authentic experiences that are not found in guidebooks or tourist brochures. They yearn to interact with locals, try the local cuisine, and participate in unique cultural traditions.

It is important to note that the accidental traveler is not defined by age, occupation, or background. From young backpackers taking a gap year to seasoned professionals seeking a break from their daily routines, anyone can find themselves embarking on an accidental travel journey. It is a mindset and an approach to travel that transcends age or demographic boundaries.

Now that we understand the background and mindset of the accidental traveler, let us delve into their unexpected journey, where the beauty of travel lies in the unexpected.

The Unexpected Journey

Every accidental traveler has a story about how their journey took an unexpected turn, leading them on an adventure they never imagined. It is in these moments of spontaneity that the magic of travel truly comes alive.

For some accidental travelers, it all begins with a simple change in plans. A missed flight connection, a canceled tour, or a sudden change in circumstances can set the stage for an entirely new adventure. What was initially a moment of disappointment or frustration transforms into an opportunity to explore new destinations or veer off the beaten path.

Others find themselves swept up in the flow of the local culture, drawn to the vibrant energy of a lively street festival or the allure of a hidden beach tucked away from the tourist crowds. These unexpected experiences often become the highlight of their trip, offering a glimpse into the soul of a place and creating cherished memories.

One of the most thrilling aspects of the unexpected journey is the element of surprise. Imagine stumbling upon a quaint café filled with locals enjoying lively conversations in a language you don’t understand. You find yourself drawn into their world, immersing yourself in the culture and forming unexpected connections. These chance encounters can lead to lifelong friendships or spark a newfound passion for a particular destination.

The unexpected journey also brings with it a sense of spontaneity and freedom. There are no strict schedules or itineraries to adhere to, allowing the accidental traveler to follow their intuition and explore at their own pace. They can embrace detours and hidden gems, finding solace in the unknown and discovering the beauty in taking the road less traveled.

Of course, the unexpected journey is not without its challenges. Navigating unfamiliar territories, language barriers, and unforeseen obstacles can test the accidental traveler’s adaptability and problem-solving skills. Yet, it is often in these moments of uncertainty that personal growth and self-discovery blossom.

Whether it’s getting lost in a maze-like labyrinth of narrow streets, experiencing a cultural misunderstanding, or finding oneself in a remote corner of the world, the unexpected journey offers valuable lessons. It teaches resilience, patience, and the ability to find joy and beauty even in the midst of uncertainty.

The accidental traveler’s journey is not just about reaching a destination; it is about embracing the journey itself and all the surprises it brings. By surrendering to the unexpected, travelers open themselves up to a world of possibilities and create lasting memories that will be cherished forever.

Exploring New Cultures

One of the most enriching aspects of the accidental traveler’s journey is the opportunity to immerse themselves in new cultures. By stepping off the beaten path and embracing the unexpected, they open themselves up to a world of diverse traditions, customs, and ways of life.

Exploring new cultures allows the accidental traveler to break free from their own cultural bubble and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world’s diverse tapestry. It offers a chance to witness firsthand how different societies function, how they celebrate, and how they navigate the complexities of everyday life.

From bustling markets in Southeast Asia to tea ceremonies in Japan, each culture has its own distinctive practices and rituals. The accidental traveler has the opportunity to participate in these traditions, gaining a deeper insight into the values and beliefs that shape a particular society. It is through these immersive experiences that they can broaden their perspective and challenge their preconceived notions.

One aspect of exploring new cultures is the chance to sample local cuisine. Food is a gateway to understanding a culture’s history, geography, and traditions. The accidental traveler can savor exotic flavors, try street food delicacies, and dine with locals, all of which create a deeper connection to the places they visit. From spicy curries in India to fresh ceviche in Peru, the culinary adventures of the accidental traveler become a feast for the senses.

Beyond just observing or trying new cultural experiences, the accidental traveler often forms genuine connections with locals. Through interactions with people from different backgrounds, they gain insights into everyday life, enduring friendships, and meaningful exchanges of ideas and perspectives.

These connections can happen in unexpected ways, whether it’s striking up a conversation with a shopkeeper, joining a community project, or simply sharing a cup of tea with a friendly stranger. It is in these moments that cultural barriers dissolve, and the universal thread of humanity binds people together.

In the exploration of new cultures, the accidental traveler also learns to navigate cultural differences and respect local customs. They embrace the idea of being a responsible traveler, understanding the importance of cultural sensitivity, and leaving a positive impact on the places they visit.

By immersing themselves in new cultures, the accidental traveler gains a greater appreciation for the diversity of our world. They carry these experiences and learnings with them, fostering a more open-minded and inclusive perspective long after their journey comes to an end.

Adventures and Misadventures

The adventurous spirit of the accidental traveler often leads them down a path of exciting escapades and unexpected escapades. Their journey is filled with a mix of thrilling adventures and humorous misadventures that add a touch of excitement to their travel tales.

Adventures can take many forms for the accidental traveler. It could be embarking on a thrilling hike to a hidden waterfall, diving into the crystal-clear waters of a remote island, or braving extreme weather conditions to witness a natural wonder. These adventures push the boundaries of comfort and immerse the accidental traveler in the raw beauty of nature.

But it’s not just the adrenaline-pumping activities that define an adventure. The accidental traveler also seeks out immersive cultural experiences, the chance to witness ancient traditions, and the opportunity to connect with nature and local communities. These experiences create lasting memories and contribute to the colorful tapestry of their journeys.

However, the path of the accidental traveler is not without its missteps and humorous misadventures. These instances often become some of the most amusing and memorable moments of their journey. From getting lost in a labyrinthine maze of streets to trying to navigate public transportation in a foreign language, these misadventures add a touch of comedy to their travel stories.

Language barriers can result in comical misunderstandings, where gestures and broken phrases become the tools of communication. Ordering food becomes a game of chance, with the accidental traveler finding themselves served with unexpected delicacies or inadvertently discovering hidden culinary gems that were not part of their original plan.

Transportation mishaps also contribute to the misadventures of the accidental traveler. From missed trains to chaotic bus terminals, these moments test their patience and problem-solving skills. Yet, they often lead to unexpected encounters and memorable detours, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of the accidental traveler.

It is through these adventures and misadventures that the accidental traveler gathers a collection of stories to share with others. They become the storytellers, captivating their audience with tales of bravery, laughter, and resilience. These experiences shape their perception of the world and remind them of the beauty of embracing the unexpected.

Whether it’s conquering a towering mountain peak or laughing at the absurdity of a simple misunderstanding, adventures and misadventures go hand in hand for the accidental traveler. They create a rich tapestry of experiences that form the foundation of their unique travel journey.

Unexpected Encounters

One of the most remarkable aspects of the accidental traveler’s journey is the series of unexpected encounters that they experience along the way. These chance meetings with strangers can have a profound impact, leaving a lasting impression and creating connections that transcend borders and cultures.

Traveling opens the door to serendipitous encounters, where the accidental traveler finds themselves in the right place at the right time, crossing paths with individuals who forever leave a mark on their journey. It could be a fellow traveler with a captivating story to share, a local resident who becomes a trusted guide, or a kind-hearted stranger who offers a helping hand when it is most needed.

These encounters often bring a sense of interconnectedness and remind the accidental traveler of the power of human connection. In a world that can sometimes feel disconnected, these chance meetings serve as a reminder that kindness and compassion know no borders.

Through these encounters, the accidental traveler gains a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives. As they engage in conversations, exchange stories and ideas, they broaden their horizons and challenge their own beliefs. These unexpected connections become windows into a world that may have been unfamiliar or misunderstood.

Friendships that form during these encounters can be particularly special. From sharing meals together to exploring new places, these connections go beyond the surface level and create a sense of belonging in the midst of unfamiliar surroundings. The accidental traveler often finds themselves forging bonds with people from different backgrounds, united by a shared love for exploration and a curiosity about the world.

These encounters also have the power to transform the path of the accidental traveler. A chance conversation may lead to the discovery of a hidden gem off the traditional tourist trail, opening up a whole new avenue for exploration. The accidental traveler may find themselves invited to partake in local traditions, celebrations, or even participate in community activities, providing a deeper and richer travel experience.

But not all unexpected encounters are positive or life-changing. Some encounters may present challenges or moments of discomfort. However, these encounters serve as opportunities for growth and learning. They push the accidental traveler out of their comfort zone, sparking introspection and empathy.

Ultimately, these unexpected encounters become the heart and soul of the accidental traveler’s journey. They add layers of richness, depth, and authenticity to their travel experiences, reminding them that the world is full of extraordinary individuals with stories waiting to be discovered.

Learning and Growth

For the accidental traveler, every step of their journey is an opportunity for learning and personal growth. Stepping outside their comfort zone and embracing the unknown allows them to develop valuable skills and gain insights that extend far beyond the boundaries of their travel experience.

One of the primary learning experiences for the accidental traveler is adaptability. Navigating through unfamiliar environments, facing language barriers, and encountering unexpected challenges requires flexibility and the ability to think on their feet. The ability to adapt becomes a valuable life skill that can be applied to various situations beyond travel, fostering resilience and resourcefulness.

The accidental traveler’s journey also cultivates a sense of empathy and cultural understanding. Through interactions with people from different backgrounds, they develop a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives and learn to embrace the beauty of differences. They become more open-minded, shedding preconceived notions, and embracing the richness of cultural diversity.

Travel inherently teaches problem-solving skills. From finding their way in a foreign city to navigating public transportation, the accidental traveler becomes adept at finding creative solutions to unexpected situations. These problem-solving skills translate into their everyday lives, enabling them to approach challenges with a fresh perspective and a sense of adaptability.

Moreover, travel serves as a conduit for self-discovery and personal growth. Stepping into unfamiliar territories allows the accidental traveler to confront their fears, push their boundaries, and discover hidden strengths. It encourages self-reflection and introspection, leading to a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s values.

The accidental traveler also becomes an advocate for sustainable and responsible travel. By witnessing the impact of their actions on the environment and local communities, they develop a heightened sense of responsibility towards preserving the places they visit. They adopt sustainable travel practices, support local businesses, and become conscious of their ecological footprint.

Learning through travel extends beyond the individual to the global community. The accidental traveler becomes a bridge between cultures, fostering mutual understanding and respect. Stories and experiences shared with others inspire curiosity and a desire to explore the world, sparking a ripple effect of cultural exchange and appreciation.

Overall, the accidental traveler’s journey is a transformative experience. It challenges assumptions, broadens perspectives, and ignites a lifelong love for exploration and learning. The lessons learned and the personal growth achieved during their journey become cherished treasures, guiding them as they navigate the world and continue to seek new adventures.

Accidental Travel

accidental travel

In the UK, before Covid-19 many of us travelled with relatively little thought – whether by private or individual means, or public transport. But during lockdown our habits largely changed – certainly in terms of travelling any distance. As lockdown eases we’re being urged to avoid public transport where possible – and transport workers have paid a high price for their jobs. Bus staff have one of the highest mortality rates, for example, by occupational group. It’s a valuable reminder that whilst travel can be liberating for passengers, it relies on the labour of staff to make possible – and with it come risks.

The ‘Railway Work, Life & Death’  project is looking further back in time, at accidents and ill-health amongst British and Irish railway employees, between approximately 1889 and 1939. We’re a collaboration between the National Railway Museum, the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick and the University of Portsmouth, working with The National Archives of the UK. We have small, but dedicated, volunteer teams transcribing and researching the accidents contained within documents held at each of the archives – and we’d particularly like to thank them, as without them, nothing would happen. Collaboration and co-production are at the core of our approach, with our volunteers and with people who are making use of project resources.

We are making the transcriptions freely available via our website, to try to improve awareness and use of this invaluable resource. So – we’re working with physical archives, to create a type of digital archive! To date we’ve made available around 6,500 cases covering 1901-1923, but we’re working on an estimated 70,000 further cases across our period. Details come from accident investigations produced by state-appointed inspectors, railway companies and trades unions. They tell us all sorts about staff working practices, workplace hazards and the individual impacts of accidents in one of the UK’s most hazardous industries.

accidental travel

How does all this relate to travel? Well, in all sorts of ways! As noted, passenger travel would not have been possible without the staff running the railway system. Then, as now, they’re easy to overlook – one of our hopes is to make the working lives and experiences of railway employees more visible. Whilst generally you won’t find passenger travel accidents in our archive, of course staff crewed the trains that were involved, so they do fall within our remit – as in the Reading 1914 accident discussed here  . We also encourage guest blog posts, and sometimes they touch upon passenger experiences, as in this example  .

accidental travel

Staff travel sometimes appears in the records. Sometimes it was more conventional than others. We know that on 11 May 1911, at around 9.20 in the evening, eighteen-year old Caledonian Railway Company signal lighter (someone employed to keep the lamps on signal alight) G Gray was travelling in carriage near Gourock, in Renfrewshire. He leant out to check whether a signal was lit, but the carriage door flew open and he fell from the train. Fortunately for him, he survived, suffering only scalp wounds. Our database is a litany of staff injured or killed on the move: oiling locomotives whilst running, riding on the outside of wagons, thrown from wagons they were travelling in – even one case in which an employee had his leg, ankle and foot injured when three hogsheads of beer fell on him as he was working in a wagon being moved!

accidental travel

It isn’t just the obvious railway travel which features in our data. The railways at this time had substantial interests in all forms of travel, including road transport. We have accidents involving carts and lorries, both staff and non-staff – plenty of people had reason to be working on and near the railways, like coal merchants, carters and farmers. Porters had to move trollies around stations, often across railway lines, and track maintenance staff used trollies to travel to their point of work, sometimes falling from them. This happened on 15 April 1914, when Thomas Hall and William Turner fell from the trollies they were riding on between Chilham and Wye in Kent, injuring their legs. Hydraulic hoists in stations injured or killed staff who were riding in them against the rules – as in the case of Jane Horner, at Stockton station, County Durham, in 1913 (and discussed further here  ). And of course, walking was a key means of travel for workers and is found in our project as a part of the accidents staff experienced.

accidental travel

Staff had to travel to or from work, as well. Sometimes this might involve them getting from the immediate point of ‘clocking on/off’ to where they needed to be – as in the case of Midland Railway temporary goods porter TH Narey, at Shipley in Derbyshire. On 23 February 1911 he was walking on the railway when travelling from the goods warehouse where he worked; he was hit by a train, losing an arm and some teeth. The investigation records that he didn’t exercise ‘necessary care’ but also hadn’t been properly supervised; it seems it was common for men to walk along the line here, tacitly being accepted by the foremen.

accidental travel

These, and sadly plenty more cases like them, all came about – directly or indirectly – as a result of travel. What do they all tell us? By finding out more about the individuals who had accidents on the railways, we can see the true costs of the industry – and travel, of passengers and goods. We can see how work was carried out, often including why staff acted in seemingly counterintuitive ways that exposed them to danger.

What are the next steps for the project? We’re always keen to see where staff accidents appear in the holdings of archives beyond those we’re presently working with – we’ve recently been put on to what looks to be an interesting clutch of compensation records at Doncaster Archives, for example. Finding records like these takes some sneaky searching – and the expertise of the archivists, who might have encountered the sorts of things we’re looking for but which are either yet to be catalogued in detail or where accidents feature incidentally to the main purpose of the record.

accidental travel

In terms of our immediate work, there are an awful lot more records to transcribe! We’re working on that, as well as researching as many cases as possible beyond the records we’re handling. In the longer term, we’d like to produce an interactive map of the cases, to provide a much more easily visualised and accessible entry point. We’re keen to move beyond the records of the formal railway industry – we want to link our material to other records, to make it possible to build a life-story of the individuals involved: newspaper reports, births, marriage and death records, autobiography, and family history. We’d like to build a tool to allow anyone to submit the records they are aware of, including details or stories from within their family. All of this will mean we can piece together a much greater picture of the impacts of staff accidents, and will really improve awareness, understanding and use of the records. Watch this space!

And if you fancy getting involved – in transcription, once we’re able to get back into the archives and photograph records, a guest blog post, to alert us to archives we should know about or something else, please just drop us a line. We’d be delighted to hear from you!

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (Air Only)

Accident Death

Understanding Accidental Injuries Coverage for Air Travel

Accidents can happen unexpectedly, and preparing, especially while traveling, is essential. This article explains the details of accidental death and dismemberment coverage for air travel, breaking down the critical points in a simple and clear way.

Coverage for Accidental Injuries

Imagine you are on a plane during a trip, and something unfortunate occurs, causing injuries or loss. This coverage is like a fail-safe for such situations. It provides benefits if you experience certain injuries or losses due to an accident while you are a passenger on a licensed air transportation service during your trip.

Defining "Loss"

The definition of "loss" varies based on the body part:

  • Hand or foot: Complete severance through and above the wrist or ankle joints.
  • Eye: Irrecoverable loss of sight.
  • Speech or hearing: Entire and irrecoverable loss of speech or hearing of both ears.
  • Thumb and index finger: Actual severance through or above the joint that meets the finger at the palm

Key Points to Understand:

  • What Is Covered: If you are injured or experience loss due to an accident while flying on a licensed passenger plane during your trip, this coverage applies
  •  Time Limit: The accident-related injury or loss must happen within 180 days from the accident's date
  •  Principal Sum: The amount of money you can receive as a benefit is based on the Principal Sum mentioned in the Schedule of Benefits

Additional Situations Covered

  • Exposure: AXA can provide benefits when exposed to harsh elements due to an accident involving the plane, resulting in injuries. The exposure-related loss must occur within 365 days of the event.
  • Disappearance: If your body cannot be found within 365 days after an accident that causes the forced landing, sinking, stranding, or wrecking of the plane, and you were a passenger, AXA can provide benefits to your beneficiaries.

Conclusion

Accidents can happen even during air travel, but having the right coverage can provide you and your loved ones with financial support during tough times. Accidental death and dismemberment coverage ensures that you will have some level of protection in place if the unexpected occurs. Always review the terms of the coverage to understand the benefits and limits it offers.

CHP finally clears pro-Palestinian protesters from I-880 in Oakland; all lanes reopened

By Dave Pehling , Itay Hod

Updated on: April 15, 2024 / 6:54 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

Authorities were finally able to clear two separate pro-Palestinian protests that closed lanes on I-880 in Oakland in both directions for hours starting Monday morning, according to CHP.

The protest was among multiple demonstrations blocking freeway traffic in the Bay Area, with another group of activists blocking southbound traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge starting at around 8 a.m.  That protest would shut down the entire span.

CHP initially reported an accident at 23rd Ave. at around 6:15 a.m. blocking northbound lanes of the freeway, according to a sig-alert.

A short time later, KCBS Traffic posted on social media that there was additionally a protest in the area that blocked all northbound lanes.

ALL LANES ARE BLOCKED. NO ESTIMATED TIME OF OPENING. There is a protest here. No one is sure what they are protesting, but all lanes are blocked. Reports of barrels, people on lawn chairs sitting between the barrels, all in chains. #KCBSTraffic https://t.co/K98t3TDUif — KCBS Radio - The Traffic Leader (@KCBSAMFMTraffic) April 15, 2024

The protest was in the area of 5th Ave., according to reports.

The post said there were reports of barrels in the roadway as well as people on lawn chairs sitting between the barrels that were all chained together. The post did not indicate what was being protested, but there were reports of a banner being displayed that read "A-15 Economic blockade for a free Palestine."

CHP confirmed there were about 15 protesters blocking northbound 880. Video from the area indicated that southbound lanes were not blocked, though traffic was slowing as cars passed the protest.

CHP and Oakland police officers were at the scene in force to respond to the protest and clear lanes.

As of shortly after 7 a.m., the back-up on I-880 was stretching from Oakland to San Leandro.

Video showed police working to cut through the chains and steel barrels that the protesters were linking arms through so they can safely be removed.

At around 8:15 a.m., another group of protesters blocked the southbound direction of I-880 at 7th Street near the Port of Oakland and Jack London Square. The group of demonstrators on foot at that location grew to approximately 300 over the course of the morning, CHP said later.

The protests also closed all lanes of the eastbound and westbound I-80 connector ramps to southbound I-880 in Oakland.

By 11 a.m., one lane of northbound 880 near the 23rd Avenue protest has reopened and one lane of southbound 880 near the 7th Street protest had reopened.

Shortly before 12 p.m., CHP confirmed that two lanes of traffic in the northbound direction had been reopened hours after the protest started. It was still another 90 minutes before authorities were able to completely reopen the northbound lanes.

UPDATE: Residual Delays on Northbound I-880 South of 5TH Avenue in Oakland. All Lanes Now Open. — 511 SF Bay (@511SFBay) April 15, 2024

At around 12:40 p.m., authorities said one lane of southbound I-880 between 7th and Broadway had reopened.

A short time later, it appeared CHP had cleared the protesters from the southbound lanes of I-880, backing them down onto freeway onramps. CHP did not announced that all southbound lanes of I-880 reopened until around 2:15 p.m. The eastbound and westbound I-80 connector ramps to southbound I-880 were reopened at about 2:40 p.m. A total of five protesters were arrested among the demonstrators who blocked traffic on southbound I-880.

Among those stuck in the backup included Sal Valencia, a construction worker who had been rushing to bring materials to a job in Hayward when he became stuck.

"At the beginning I was kind of afraid, I didn't know what was going on. I was afraid for my life." Valencia said.

He was stuck on the freeway for a total of five hours.

"Basically this is not fair for a lot of people that are going to work, They're trying to make some money and look what happened? This is just, to be honest, ridiculous," Valencia went on to say.

Valencia, who said he has not followed the events in the Middle East, believed that the protesters were not achieving their goals.

"It's not helping. To me, this is not helping," he said.

During an afternoon press conference to address CHP response to the demonstrations, a spokesperson said that the protesters made a coordinated effort with the northbound I-880 blockade, using a truck to transport 55-gallon drums filled with cement, rebar and heavy-duty chains to make it more difficult for law enforcement to remove the activists from the roadway.

The demonstration blocking northbound I-880 near the Embarcadero began at about 6 a.m. CHP were able to initially reopen lanes at 10 a.m. with all lanes reopened by 1:15 p.m. A total of seven protesters were arrested at that location.

The protesters arrested are facing a variety of charges, including unlawful assembly, remaining at an unlawful assembly, refusing to comply with a lawful order, unlawful stopping on a bridge, unlawfully being a pedestrian on a freeway, impeding an officer, conspiracy to commit a crime and false imprisonment.

The actions were planned as part of an "economic blockade" coordinated with similar protests around the world with disruptions happening  in New York and  Chicago . Protesters are hoping to target "the global economy for its complicity in Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people," organizers under the banner A15Action said.

Back in November, a large group of protesters shut down the westbound Bay Bridge  as President Joe Biden and other world leaders visited the Bay Area for the APEC Summit. Last month, dozens of those protesters were able to reach a deal with a judge to avoid jail time .

A similar protest blocked traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge last February.

According to Bay City News Service, an additional protest is planned for noon at UN Plaza and Market and Hyde streets in San Francisco, by the Group Code Pink. An action by the A15Action group is also planned at 5:30 p.m. at the Tesla factory in Fremont.

1 killed, several injured in shuttle bus accident at Honolulu cruise terminal

O ne person is dead and several others injured after a shuttle bus rammed into them at a Honolulu cruise terminal in Hawaii on Friday, according to police and Carnival Cruise Line.

The cruise port bus was dropping off people near a pier when a bystander informed the driver that the bus was moving forward. The driver jumped into the driver’s seat and tried to stop the bus, but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes, police said.

“Somebody screamed, and then I looked over and the bus hit into the crowd. It just kept going until it hit the wall there,” witness Janet Lightfoot told CNN affiliate KHNL/KGMB.

The bus struck concrete barriers and 11 people, five of whom were transported to hospitals for treatment, according to the police. One woman died from her injuries, while the others were listed in good condition and have since been discharged, police said. Six people refused treatment.

“This is sad case where their Hawaiian vacation turned into a tragedy,” said Jessica Lani Rich of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, a nonprofit that is assisting the victims.

Carnival Cruise Line said nine guests from the Carnival Miracle ship were among those involved in the accident, including the woman who died. The Illinois woman was celebrating her wedding anniversary with a family cruise, Rich said.

“She was traveling with her husband, who was also injured and is expected to recover,” the cruise line said.

The woman’s husband was taken to the emergency room along with several other family members, the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii told CNN.

Police said investigations are ongoing, but so far speed does not appear to be an issue in the accident. “It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors to this collision,” the Honolulu Police Department said.

CNN has reached out to the shuttle bus company and is awaiting a response.

The Carnival Miracle is midway through a 15-day sailing journey that left Long Beach, California.

Planning for the future is the foundation that continues to draw customers to life insurance companies like Globe Life. Since 1900, Globe Life has helped individuals to face the unexpected and ensure a secure financial future for loved ones.

Life insurance is more diverse than ever before. Its foundation remains supporting families after the passing of a loved one. Globe Life issues 16.8 million policies, more than any of the nation's leading life insurance companies. But volume is only part of the picture.

Globe Life's zero-risk, money-back guarantee makes its policies an excellent fit for middle-income individuals looking to purchase directly from the company with no medical exam and short wait times. In addition, with benefits topping out at just $100,000, life insurance coverage from Globe Life is a good choice for individuals looking to supplement existing or employer-provided life insurance and those seeking coverage for additional family members.

However, even the best no medical exam life insurance doesn't always mean guaranteed acceptance. Buyers should expect medical questions, and the company may request medical records. Its underwriting decisions, especially for more comprehensive policies, will factor in this medical data.

Globe Life's forte is low-cost funeral plans, and customer reviews indicate it delivers on its promises. Kathy of Londonderry, OH, left a review on ConsumerAffairs after losing her 19-year-old grandson, saying, "I am so thankful to Globe Life. We could not have taken care of him without the policy. The funeral cost were paid very quickly with no stress of me handling anything and I could stay focused on what needed done."

Globe Life has been under pressure due to a series of investigations and lawsuits alleging a toxic work environment, deceptive consumer practices, and fraud. Its stock plunged about 50% in mid-April 2024 after a short-seller issued a scathing report describing, among other things, a work culture, "permissive of sexual assault, rape, racism, and widespread illicit drug activity" within American Income Life, a subsidiary of Globe Life. Globe Life denied the allegations, saying in a statement  that the short-seller "mischaracterizes facts and uses unsubstantiated claims and conjecture to present an overall picture of Globe Life that is deliberately false, misleading, and defamatory."

In March 2024, the Department of Justice subpoenaed AIL and Globe Life for documents related to Arias Organization, an affiliate insurance agency. The DOJ investigation, as well as two open investigations conducted by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, appear to be ongoing.

Globe Term Life Insurance

Globe Life offers term life insurance coverage ranging from $5,000 to $100,000. Policies are purchased directly from the company with no medical exam and quick underwriting. Once your application is approved, Globe Life benefits and monthly premiums remain fixed when policyholders make payments on time.

Like any other term policy, Globe Life's policies expire after the set term. Globe Life mentions converting term policies to whole life insurance policies to make coverage permanent. But the website is light on details, focusing on extremely low premiums for specific customers. Globe Life's term life policies are available for adults and children. All applications are subject to underwriting approval. So the pricing listed online (and your acceptance) may vary when you secure the policy.

Globe Whole Life Insurance

Globe Life offers whole life policies with benefits from $5,000 to $50,000. You can purchase policies directly from the company with no medical exam and no long wait times. Rates remain constant for life, as does coverage (when premiums are paid on time), which means you can rest assured in your chosen coverage.

Remember, Globe Life's underwriting will not approve every application, especially with higher limits. No medical exam does not translate into no medical information required. Buyers will need to answer some medical questions, and the company can pull electronic medical records to make its decision. No medical policies are typically sold to select groups like seniors looking for funeral policies or young, healthy buyers willing to pay higher premiums for lower coverage to avoid a medical exam.

Globe Children's Life Insurance

Whole life insurance for kids (or grandkids) is available from Globe Life in numbers ranging from $5,000-$30,000. Full coverage and benefits begin on day one. Available with no medical exam and zero waiting, a hassle-free policy from Globe Life might be the easiest part of welcoming a new member to your family. Benefits remain constant for life, despite age, health status, or occupation when premiums are paid on time.

As with its adult policies, Globe Life offers children whole and term life insurance options. Applicants who get approval for children's policies can also buy more comprehensive policies as adults. However, these smaller policies offer a gateway into life insurance and its financial benefits early in life. Children's life insurance can be a wealth-building tool, particularly with its whole life policies. It's never too early for financial planning.

It's easy to find comparable adult policies through other companies. However, Globe Life's life insurance for children faces less competition overall.

Globe Final Expense Life Insurance

Many of Globe Life's policies could be considered "final expense" policies. By this, we mean the limits are low and only meant to cover funeral costs and a small amount of debt. However, it provides a specific product for seniors comfortable with lower coverage amounts. As a result, approval is often more straightforward.

This policy type comes with obvious limits (the death benefit). However, buyers should also be aware of other limitations, like the inability to build cash value over time. So no matter how long you live, the value will remain the same.

Additional Coverage Options Offered by Globe Life

Accidental Benefits Insurance

You can prepare for the unexpected and the financial strain that can accompany it with an extra layer of protection. Accidental death insurance from Globe Life provides up to $250,000 worth of coverage in the case of accidental death for just $1 to start. In addition, acceptance is guaranteed regardless of health for individuals aged 18-69. Additional benefits, furnished at no extra cost, include coverage for myriad issues from inflation and education to dismemberment and paralysis.

Accidental death coverage only pays out if you're killed in an accident. Causes could include travel-related accidents, trips and falls, poisonings, etc. It would not cover terminal illnesses, extended injuries after an accident, or dying from old age. Globe life also has a supplemental accidental insurance product. Accidental death coverage helps buyers with ambulance riders, ICU stays, and other medical costs of accidents that don't result in death.

Mortgage Protection Insurance

You can protect your family's biggest asset and a potential source of stress in the event of your accidental death. For just a fraction of your monthly mortgage payment, this type of accidental death and dismemberment policy provides between $50,000-$350,000 to pay off your home mortgage. If the payout doesn't pay off your mortgage, loved ones could then look into options to refinance the smaller debt to lower monthly payments.

Rates start at just $5.50 per month, and acceptance is guaranteed for individuals ages 18-69. Additional benefits, furnished at no extra cost, include coverage in the case of a common disaster or commercially scheduled airline accident, among others.

One important thing to note is this is an accidental death and dismemberment policy. In short, it's not a comprehensive plan for every cause of death. Benefits would only apply after a covered accident. The limits are part of what makes this policy so cheap. It's excellent for a policyholder's prime working years but may not be as beneficial for retirees.

Globe Life's advertised rates are affordable, with types of life insurance  for adults and children starting at $1 for the first month, after which the rate is based on the individual's current age and guaranteed for the policy terms. Unlike some competitors, Globe Life also offers a limited money-back guarantee. If unsatisfied, return your policy within 30 days for a full refund.

Globe Life offers many cheap plans with low payouts. These are great for buyers on a tight budget or those seeking easy approval for a funeral cost plan. However, buyers looking for large plans for retirement or other financial planning would find better products with other companies.

Anyone can file a claim with Globe Life, including a spouse, child, another beneficiary, or a family spokesperson (including a representative from a funeral home). Providing the following information will expedite the claims process:

  • Life insurance policy number
  • Contact info for the beneficiary
  • Official death certificate
  • Copy of obituary
  • Coroner's and/or police report (in the case of accident, homicide, or suicide)

Once gathered, mail all documents to the following:

Globe Life Inc.

PO Box 8076

Attn: Life Claims Department

McKinney, TX 75070

On average, it takes Globe Life 10-15 days to receive, log and process the information included in the above documents. Please bear in mind processing times can vary. Globe Life representatives will notify you should additional information be needed.

It only takes a few minutes to complete its easy online application. Once approved, Globe Life will send a copy of your policy via mail.

Obtaining additional life insurance coverage for family members is easy with Globe Life's e-ServiceCenter. New applications for adults and children are accessible with your current login information if you have an existing plan. New customers can also apply online or over the phone.

Once you've begun the claims process, Globe Life offers phone and online-based customer service. Call Customer Service at 1-888-650-4081 or visit the company's eServiceCenter to check the status of a claim you've filed.

Globe Life vs. State Farm Life Insurance

Globe Life prides itself on simple, standard coverage delivering death benefits topping out at $100,000 compared to more robust options from State Farm . Globe Life focuses mainly on small funeral policies or accident coverage. State Farm offers larger payouts and options like its Survivorship Universal Life Insurance, which covers two individuals. So, for example, a husband and wife could buy a policy, and the value would be based on the couple's combined lifespan and qualifications.

Globe Life scored 798 on the latest JD Power US Individual Life Insurance Study. In short, the company earns consistently high marks from customers. Still, State Farm outranks Globe Life with a score of 843. With State Farm, applicants may have to submit to a medical exam. But the company offers more comprehensive policies to pay out in more flexible circumstances. It also has more permanent life insurance options to meet diverse needs. Most importantly, buyers can bundle State Farm life insurance with homeowners, auto, and other State Farm plans.

As you might expect from its JD Power rankings, State Farm customers have a lot to say about the package it provides. Mb of Palm Springs, CA, left a review on ConsumerAffairs , saying, "State Farm may or may not be the cheapest. However, their customer service is outstanding. They proactively contact me to review my insurance once a year. They always answer my questions quickly and clearly. If they don't know immediately, they are willing to admit they don't know and always follow-up ASAP."

State Farm Life Insurance Review

Globe Life vs. Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance

Globe Life has become known for its quick and flexible whole and term life policies. Especially with its accidental death policies, Globe Life offers no medical exam options with fast approvals. Mutual of Omaha is not quite as cheap. Term Life Express is the company's only option for life insurance with no medical exam. But it comes with significantly higher limits than any of Globe Life's policies for all causes of death (not just approved accidents) up to $300,000. The company's strong financial backing means building cash value is easy, as evidenced by options including Universal Life Insurance (boasting coverage over $1 million) and Indexed Universal Life Insurance (a flexible albeit risky way to build cash value).

Both companies have whole life policies. Again, Mutual of Omaha offers a diverse range of policies with higher benefits. Mutual of Omaha customers can enjoy accelerated death benefits in the event of a terminal disease and other riders. Its underwriting may take longer than Globe Life's, but the higher benefits will pay off in the long run for approved customers. At this time, both companies enjoy high customer satisfaction rankings with JD Power.

Most importantly, Mutual of Omaha will likely never offer the bargain policies Globe Life does. But customers still find pricing reasonable. Wendy of Enola, PA, reviewed Mutual of Omaha on ConsumerAffairs , saying, "I have a practical and effective insurance policy with great and affordable rates. Company has an excellent and easy to use website."

Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance

Globe Life vs. SBLI

SBLI offers Cherish Life final expense insurance up to $35,000 in coverage with two significant benefits. SBLI customers can apply until age 80, and beneficiaries can use benefits to pay for any of the insured's expenses. Globe Life has a cut-off age of 75 to apply. Both companies offer whole and term life insurance policies. Both companies also have no medical exam life insurance options.

At this time, Globe Life's listed policy limits are low. Most policies cover funeral costs. Plans with higher benefits are mostly accident policies (it only pays out if you die due to a covered accident). SBLI doesn't list its limits on its site. However, it focuses on whole and term life insurance for any cause of death.

The customer reviews tell a great story about SBLI. Trustpilot reviewer Matthew says, "SBLI has always been a notch above all others in the insurance industry. We have had policies with them for about 8 years, and have never experienced anything but great service, honest and candid feedback, and they deliver exactly what they communicate!"

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Globe Life Insurance

Life insurance companies are compared based on product quality, insurance riders, net performance scores, pricing, and customer service. A diverse array of life insurance products is used to compare death benefit plans with life insurance designed for long-term financial planning. Opinions expressed here are wholly based on facts gathered.

Ratings are not decided based solely on marketing or single online reviews. Instead, we gather a broad mix of information to rank all insurance products consistently and fairly. Therefore, the best way to ensure you find the right policy is to utilize a qualified agent when shopping for life insurance.

You can read more about our rating system here .

What Does "No Medical Exam" Mean With Globe Life?

None of the life insurance products at Globe Life require a medical or physical exam. Instead, the insurer uses a series of health-related questions (part of the company's online application) to determine eligibility. Full transparency, especially with preexisting conditions, is essential. Dishonesty of any kind puts the insured at risk of policy cancellation or unpaid death benefits. You may be eligible for a small funeral costs policy even if you're denied a more comprehensive life insurance policy.

A crane fire in a major Sydney tunnel that halted traffic at the start of morning peak hour has now been cleared and traffic is flowing.

The mobile crane was on fire on the eastbound side of the Lane Cove Tunnel; diversions had been in place but were lifted just after 9am on Thursday.

Government agency Transport for NSW reported the fire about 6.30am on Thursday.

“Traffic is already heavy, especially towards the city, so motorists are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time,” a government advisory reads.

Transport for NSW spokesman Craig Moran told 2GB that motorists should avoid the area.

“There has been a fire involving a mobile crane which has resulted in the Lane Cove Tunnel being closed in both directions,” he said.

“That’s purely for safety reasons … of course all the traffic is being diverted up onto Epping Rd.

“Our advice for people at this stage if they haven’t headed off on their journey yet, if they can avoid that lane cove tunnel area up there up at lane cove that would be fantastic.

“It’ll help bring congestion down and they’ll probably have a smoother trip.”

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said the internal sprinkler system extinguished the fire.

Four fire trucks were delayed because of the traffic and arrived about 14 minutes after the call came in, he said.

Firefighters donned breathing apparatus but when they arrived at the vehicle the sprinkler “deluge” system had put out the fire.

The Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman had no information about the cause of the fire or how many vehicles were stuck in the tunnel behind the fire.

Police would need to make sure anyone who got out of their vehicles was accounted for, the spokesman said, but there were no reported injuries.

The tunnel would be reopened within a couple of hours, which indicated there was little to no damage to the underpass, he said.

Police will launch road safety operations and motorists in some states will face double demerit points for road offences committed over the Anzac Day period.

A child who was being pushed by her mother in a stroller when she was struck by a truck is fighting for life in hospital.

A nine-year-old boy is among four people killed after their car left the road in a horror crash overnight.
