12 Awe-Inspiring Adventures in Croatia

Ready for the best adventures in Croatia? From abseiling down Dubrovnik city walls to diving the Kornati Islands, check out these adventures!

adventures in croatia

Croatia might conjure up images of island hopping, beach bumming and nowadays walking around Dubrovnik pretending you’re an extra in Game of Thrones. But I’ve found its the lesser known adventures in Croatia that often make my highlights of the country over the last few years.

With that sprawling coastline along the sparkling Adriatic Sea, you won’t be shocked to hear that the watersports are world-class. Windsurfing, white-water rafting, scuba diving, , kiteboarding, kayaking – I’ve done all this and more on the water in Croatia .

The dramatic landscapes of canyons, cliffs, hills, mountains and forests also provide phenomenal settings for adventurous activities. And you don’t have to travel far from the history and culture-rich towns and cities to enjoy them.

adventures-in-croatia

Activities and tours in Croatia range from action-packed white-water rafting on the Cetina River to a scenic jeep safari in Hvar. There are unusual things to do like abseiling down Dubrovnik Old City walls too – how many people can say they’ve done that!

So, if you’re planning a holiday in Croatia, I definitely think you should find time for some adventures. Allow my 12 suggestions of adventurous things to do in Croatia to inspire the thrill seeker in you!

Planning a trip to Croatia? Then make sure you read my guides on the best day trips from Dubrovnik , the best day trips from Split , and where to stay in Dubrovnik too. And as a little more inspiration, here are some of my favourite photos of Croatia to really get you excited for your holiday.

Adventure Activities in Croatia

Sea kayaking in dubrovnik.

adventurous things to do in croatia

The Adriatic Sea is generally calm and wave-free, which makes for perfect sea kayaking conditions. Head down to the beach on any day and chances are you’ll spot a selection of brightly coloured kayaks out on the water.

The great conditions here mean that you can be a complete novice and still have a go at sea kayaking, by yourself or with a group tour. I chose to go on a tour mainly because it’s always a fun group activity and the instructors lead you to the very best spots along the rugged coastline.

Anyway, kayaking under the walls of Dubrovnik is one of the best things you can do in the city and it offers such a different perspective. I’d definitely recommend this activity for anyone looking for a bit of an adventure!

A 3-hour sea kayaking tour of Dubrovnik costs £26/$32 and gives you the chance to exploring the coast and walls of the city. This tour includes all equipment, a knowledgable guide, insurance and even a little snack.

Alternatively, there are some incredible day trips from Dubrovnik if you’re looking for a few other tours in Croatia further afield!

Sail Croatia

adventure in croatia

You might know Sail Croatia as a party tour operator. Well, they are a safe bet if you want to meet new people, socialise and party away the evenings.

But what you might not know is that they also offer active cruises based around cycling and hiking. So, you can enjoy the social side of Sail Croatia but also make sure you pack in as much adventure as possible.

One of their most popular trips is their hiking cruises where you get to take on some of the best hiking trails in the country. Plus, sailing between destinations ensures you get to see a decent chunk of the country in even a short 7-day cruise.

Scuba diving the Kornati Islands National Park

croatia adventure activities

Are you looking for a few amazing adventures in Croatia? Then look no further than the Kornati Islands National Park!

The Kornati Islands National Park is spread over an archipelago between the cities of Zadar and Šibenik. There are 109 islands, with some awesome dive spots and an abundance of marine wildlife.

Murter Island is usually the starting point for most dives. Around here you can see all kinds of impressive scenery as well as octopuses, sea sponges, crustaceans and lots of colourful fish.

One of the coolest parts is getting to explore the underwater wrecks, and there are a fair few in the area too. Francesca Wreck is completely covered in soft coral and a truly incredible sight. This is without a doubt one of the best dives in Croatia!

White-water rafting on the Cetina River

rafting-in-croatia

I love the adrenaline rush you get with white-water rafting and the Cetina River is up there with my top places to do it. You can spend a good three hours in the raft here, on a route that’s exciting without being too intimidating.

The river flows through a spectacular canyon, which had some of my favourite scenery in Croatia. Forest, caves, waterfalls, rock formations – it’s all on view as you bump your way along the rapids. We also stopped at a few calmer spots for a quick swim.

White-water rafting on the Cetina River was one of the tours in Croatia I did as a day trip from Split. There are loads of tour operators who arrange trips from the city including transfers, which are less than an hour each way. It’s also a fantastic way of meeting some like-minded travellers too!

A 4-hour white-water rafting tour costs £25/$32 and takes you on an amazing route of grade 2/3 rapids. This tour includes all equipment hire, professional guides and transfers too.

Rock climbing at Omis

croatia adventures

While you’re in the area and sniffing out adventurous things to do in Croatia, spend some time in Omis. This town is where the Cetina River meets the sea and it’s great for rock climbing.

Being such a hotspot for the sport, there are plenty of instructors and routes on offer. So you’ll be comfortable climbing whether you’re a seasoned pro or complete beginner. And I promise you there are a lot of beginners here.

It’s an epic view as you climb up to the top. You can look out over the city, towards the sea or at the Cetina River canyon. Being so close to the sea also has the bonus of being able to cool off with a dip after a hard climb.

Abseiling down the Dubrovnik city walls

abseiling-in-dubrovnik

Why just admire the ancient Old City walls in Dubrovnik when you can abseil down them? This is one of the more unexpected adventure activities in Croatia but one of my favourites.

The abseil only takes about 30 minutes – a bit longer when you add in time for safety briefing and preparation. This makes it one of the best adventurous things to do in Croatia if you’re short on time. Unlike other activities, there’s no day tripping out of the city required.

You scale the walls down to the city’s main street, Stradun – it’s quite a way to make an entrance! One thing – it’s like lots of tourists will take photos of you so watch out for that!

You can find out more about abseiling in Dyubrivnik here .

Hiking in the mountains of Makarska

adventure activities in croatia

Taking the heights up a notch, the mountains of Makarska include Dalmatia’s highest peak – Mount Biokovo. The only national park on the central Dalmatian coastline is also here. As you’d expect, this stunning little corner of the country is a great place for hiking.

Wander on trails through olive groves, forests and vineyards to the limestone paths further up. Some of the walks are pretty strenuous so just make sure you’ve picked a route that suits your pace.

This is actually one of my favourite adventurous activities in Croatia as all you need is a good pair of hiking shoes! Also, the views from the top of the mountains are simply incredible.

Canyoning on the Cetina River

canyoning-croatia

As well as white-water rafting, the Cetina River is a prized place for another of the best adventures in Croatia – canyoning. Carved out over thousands of years, the many pools, lakes, cliffs and even subterranean tunnels are the perfect canyoning setting.

It’s one thing to tumble down the river in a boat, but a whole other thrill to throw yourself in. I’ll be the first to admit there are points along the way that are nerve wracking, but be brave and give it a go. I promise you won’t regret it!

This is another of the tours in Croatia that you can do from Split, so an ideal choice if you’re basing yourself there.

A canyoning tour of the Cetina River costs £37/$45 and it is one of the best Croatia adventure activities. This tour includes all equipment, a professional guide and transfers too. Oh, make sure you bring a change of clothes for afterwards too.

For those of you looking for something a little more extreme, a little something to really push the boundaries, then you’ll want to take a look at this tour .

Jeep safari in Hvar

jeep-safari-hvar

Hvar has a reputation of being all about partying. While it’s true that the nightlife is great, don’t miss the adventurous things to do in Croatia on offer here too.

The island is one of the most picturesque in Croatia, and jumping on a jeep safari is an exciting way to take in the scenery. As well as olive groves, vineyards and hilly landscapes, you get to see Hvar’s famous lavender fields and old, abandoned settlements and villages.

The gravel roads aren’t the smoothest, so maybe don’t plan this activity for the morning after a night at Carpe Diem! It is a fantastic way of learning more about the island though and obviously a lot of fun too.

Windsurfing and kiteboarding in Bol

windsurfing in croatia

Lots of places along the Adriatic coast are good for windsurfing and kiteboarding, but Bol is one of the best. The town is on the island of Brač and is known for the gorgeous beach Zlatni Rat or the ‘Golden Horn’ as it’s also called. It’s easily one of my favourite beaches in Croatia.

Here the conditions for wind and kitesurfing are near perfect, mainly thanks to the wind regularly blowing above 15 knots and the flat water. Stroll along the main road down to the beach and you’ll find countless instructors and rental places. If you’ve never given either sport a go before, this is a great place to dip your toe in the water – literally.

Cycling around Dalmatia

adventure travel in croatia

Anyone into cycling should definitely consider making it one of their main modes of transport in Dalmatia. The roads are generally excellent for bikes and it means throwing a little adventure into your experience while you get from A to B.

You get to admire the stunning scenery and some of the national parks are even bike-friendly, such as Krka. You can also take your bike on ferries between islands, so getting around on two wheels really is a pretty convenient option.

Alternatively, if you don’t fancy all the hill climbs, there are a number of e-bike tours on offer. This is a full-day e-bike tour around Krkr National Park which is pretty spectacular.

Ziplining in Crikvenica

crikvenica

The zipline in Crikvenica is one of the epic Croatia attractions, mainly because it’s the first in Europe to travel over the sea. The wire is 500m in length, at around 100 feet high.

Situated in the Kačjak peninsula, the views you get of the sea and coastline as you rush along the line are beautiful. The whole thing lasts just 30 seconds, so you get some serious speed and a proper adrenaline rush.

It might sound like a bit of a whirlwind adventure but it’s an experience and memory that sticks with you, that’s for sure!

Zagreb to Dubrovnik: Parties & Plitvice Lakes

The itinerary was great! Would have loved an extra night in Hvar. The night in Plitvice allowed us plenty of time to explore but any longer would have been too long as there wasn't much else around aside from the lakes. Would have loved a stop at Krka as we passed so close by but did not have the time to return in our own time. The hostel in Zagreb did not have aircon, so was very hot and hard to sleep as we went in the middle of summer but we were pleasantly surprised with double hotel rooms in hvar and plitvice considering it was a budget hostel tour. The included boat cruise in Hvar was amazing and did not feel budget or cheap at all.

Croatian islands cruise + Land tour with Plitvice - from Zagreb

I recommend that you avoid using Hotel Corner in Split. Location not the best, but not a real problem as I was just overnighting. But extremely noisy, being at intersection of busy crossroads, no restaurant for dinner (but I found a very good one nearby, not the one recommended by the hotel), and possibly not breakfast set up for Western Europeans (no butter etc).

Thank you Insight Vacations for a wonderful time!

Croatia Sail Adventure Tour

Croatia Sail Adventure

I had the most amazing experience on the sail Croatia tour! It was my first time travelling on my own so was super nervous but our your guide Becca was super helpful answering questions prior to the tour and throughout. She arranged activities on the boat such as yoga and making bracelets so we had something to do while travelling. The group itself was a great mix of people who I've enjoyed getting to know and are hopefully now friends for life. One of the best experiences of my life!

Premium Split to Dubrovnik Tour

  • Island Hopping

Premium Split to Dubrovnik

I very much enjoyed seeing the beautiful Croatian coastline. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and seemed to have a real love for his country. My main criticism was that there were frequent incidents where things such as guides in the different areas were not included in the tour, so it felt like we were often paying for services that I would have thought would be part of the overall tour. I would have preferred to have paid more money up front than to have had the frequent requests for additional money.

Sea and Summit Adventures in Croatia

A Jewel of the Mediterranean; with a coast of sapphire clear waters shaded by ancients walled towns and an unrivalled archipelago stretching it’s near entire length. Head inland on one of our active holidays to Croatia and you’ll find rugged mountain ranges with canyons and caves to excite any adventurer.

Getting Active in Croatia

Croatia is an adventurer’s paradise. Its long rocky coastline unravels with every stroke of the kayak paddle opening up new and exciting bays and coves. Inland you can explore the rugged Balkan mountains that stretch deep into neighbouring countries and discover valleys few venture into. An Active Holiday in Croatia is perfect for walkers, cyclists and families alike.

Walking Holidays in Croatia

Escape the hustle and bustle of the main tourist towns and explore the quieter, more traditional Croatia. Our walking holidays in Croatia take in the idyllic islands of Croatia’s many archipelago’s or head deep into the remote mountains of the Balkans and explore the neighbouring countries.

Cycling Holidays in Croatia

Cycling through Croatia is simply divine. Our routes are chosen to take in the most stunning scenery and the best of the roads. While we like to get the miles in on the road, there is still plenty of time to rest and explore the quiet little villages we cycle through. But if you want to a more flexible cycling holiday in Croatia then why not try our self-guided trips where you can choose when and where you stop for a break.

Family Holidays in Croatia

With its warm crystal clear waters, perfect for snorkelling in or discovering hidden bays, along with an abundance of medieval fortified tows, Croatia is a family holiday haven. Our trips are centre-based so there’s lots of flexibility with activities for children and adults alike, even if it’s just messing in the pool or sipping wine while the kids mess around in the pool

Part of the Beautiful Balkans

Nestled within the captivating embrace of the Balkans, Croatia boasts a symphony of cultural facets. Its azure Adriatic coast is a sparkling gem, where ancient towns whisper tales of Byzantine and Roman legacies. Croatia harmonises tradition and modernity, exuding an aura of resilience and innovation, a testament to its turbulent history. Among the Balkan siblings, it stands as a proud, diverse, and coastal beauty, drawing travellers with its rich tapestry of landscapes, from pristine beaches to majestic mountains, all framed by the compelling Balkan spirit.

Where to go in Croatia

Our active holidays in Croatia span the width and breadth, from the ancient coastal fort of Dubrovnik in the South to the mountains surrounding Zagreb in the North. There's plenty to see and do. But where's the best location for your next adventure?

The breathtakingly beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik is fantastically well connected with a busy airport, bus route and harbour making it a great place to start or end your tour in Croatia and the Balkans.

A truly buzzing city with an eclectic mix of heritage and tradition alongside modern bars and restaurants, Split is a great pit stop through the Jewel of the Dalmatian coast.

The town of Hvar, with its historic architecture and bustling harbour, offers a blend of culture and entertainment. Visitors can explore ancient fortresses, indulge in delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and soak up the sun on secluded coves on this beautiful Adriatic island.

Istrian peninsula

With its charming coastal towns, such as Pula and Rovinj, Istria boasts Roman-era architecture and stunning seaside vistas. The peninsula's picturesque countryside is dotted with rolling vineyards and quaint hilltop villages, offering a taste of authentic Mediterranean life. Istria is perfect for an activity holiday, especially for those looking to explore on two wheels.

Plitvice National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park, located in Croatia, is a natural wonderland that captivates visitors with its cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, and lush greenery. The park is home to a network of wooden walkways and trails that wind their way around 16 interconnected lakes, making it a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

Known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and artistic flair, Zadar offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy. The city's Old Town is a treasure trove of Roman ruins, medieval churches, and Venetian-influenced architecture.

The birthplace of Marco Polo, this island offers historical intrigue and an authentic Mediterranean ambiance. With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush vineyards, Korčula is the sixth-largest Adriatic island and home to a glorious medieval old town.

More Information About Croatia

The best time to visit Croatia depends on your interests and tolerance for crowds and heat. If you prefer warm weather and beach activities, summer is ideal. For a more relaxed and budget-friendly experience with pleasant weather, spring and autumn are excellent choices. Winter is suitable for exploring cities and experiencing cultural events, but coastal areas may be less vibrant during this time.

Must-visit places in Croatia include Dubrovnik with its historic Old Town, Split and its Diocletian's Palace, the beautiful Plitvice Lakes National Park, the historic city of Zagreb, and the stunning coastal towns and islands like Hvar and Korčula.

Tap water in Croatia is generally safe to drink. You can refill your water bottle from taps without concerns in most places.

The currency in Croatia is the Euro.

Don't get confused as it changed from the Kuna to the Euro in January 2023.

Our adventure holidays in Croatia offer a wealth of thrilling activities. Notable highlights include swimming and snorkeling in secluded pristine bays, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), indulging in wine tasting, and immersing in the captivating beauty of cascading waterfalls and abundant flora found in Plitvice and Krka National Parks.

about life and ventures project

Story of Life and Ventures began some time ago, it just didn’t have this particular name. It’s the project born out of love for exploration and travel deep into the heart of nature. Year after year we were discovering new things and falling in love with new adventure activities. You could say everything started with hiking. The time was passing by and the peaks we hiked became higher so we went to an alpine school. The era of rock climbing started and just like that we were climbing the high cliffs of Croatia. After the dry rock, it was time for some water activities. And a love toward kayaking was born. Before we could turn our heads we were training to become adventure guides in one of the largest Croatian adventure travel agencies. Spent two months kayaking some of the wildest Croatian rivers, and then three more months guiding adventure tours in some of the most beautiful landscapes of Croatia…

…and in that year project Life and Ventures was born. Guided adventure tours during the tourist season and adventure travel blog during the whole year.

We returned to Dalmatia after spending 10 years in Zagreb with an idea to start a small adventure travel company. We got all the necessary certificates, spent all of our savings on buying equipment and it was time to start. The idea behind the part of guided adventure tours in Croatia lies in the fact that we wanted to lead tourists to places otherwise hidden and introduce them to some more adventurous activities Croatia has to offer, meeting new people and making some new friends in the process.

And here we are, still living the same dream, making it better with every passing day…

Meet the guides

Hello there! We are Andrea & Mario, founders and adventure guides of Life and Ventures. We’re just two ordinary persons with extraordinary love toward being outdoor, discovering and exploring a world that surrounds us, often in a more adventurous manner. We are the ones that will guide you through your adventure travel in Croatia whether you choose to join us. We were born and raised in southern Dalmatia, it’s our home and playground and we’ll gladly share some of the places for the best adventure with you. We tend to have a more personal approach in our tours during which you are not merely our guest but also a companion with whom we share a common adventure.

We rarely rest. Even when the season of guided adventures is done we still keep exploring and preparing new tours for the years to come. You can find more about that in our Blog section where our adventures take virtual form. When we take a break from the world of adventure we are devoted to our photography/videography and design business. Constant development in the adventure tourism domain is something we strive for through new courses we participate in.

adventure-guide-2

Pretty side of L&VE. She started her adventure life with scuba diving and continued with other activities. She loves to travel and she can’t wait to go on a next journey in some foreign country. She like to spend her free time playing with our two adopted kittens – Šćućur and Čičak.

adventure-guide

Restless side of L&VE. Addicted to spending time in nature, discovering and exploring new places and new ways of moving. Rarely goes anywhere without photography equipment. Love landscape photography, especially ambient and atmospheric, fog, sunrises, sunsets, expanses… Always thinking about the ways to improve tours and design new ones.

A word from our guests

Youtube channel full of adventures.

And cool places. In the year 2020, in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, we started to explore our surroundings even more. We did a few videos here and there but they were not in a form they will be from now on. The idea behind our Youtube channel is to explore peculiar outdoor places of Croatia and the rest of the world and make research about them. We strive to make a short documentary about these places with all the interesting info we could find about them.

If you are into the outdoor kind of stuff or just want to find more about the fantastic outdoor wonders that surround us, subscribe to our channel and join us in the ride. You can explore our channel directly on Youtube or under Videography on this site.

Our latest ventures

Tourist season doesn’t last a whole year but the urge to discover, explore and travel does. This is where all of our adventures live virtually in the form of story and photography. If you are an adventurer seeking places to visit in Croatia , you’ll find some here. After the guided adventure tours season ends we travel to some other places, spend some time designing new adventures and improving the old ones. It’s the process that never ends.

In this section, you can read about all these adventurous travels that we do during the year. They often happen in our surroundings while we explore some unknown places of our home. In others, we explore some of the most famous outdoor places in Croatia . Sometimes the adventure takes us to other countries so we write about that as well. We are active on social networks as well so make sure you check our Facebook, Instagram and YouTube profiles.

If you are a couple traveling in Croatia, visit our Love and Ventures website where you can find the best things to do in Croatia for couples.

Please respect nature and be aware of your limits while exploring the world that surrounds you. Some of the places from our blog are accessible only by using the proper equipment. In our adventures, we use kayaks, mountain bikes, and rock climbing and hiking equipment.

Travel Croatia: Yours to rediscover

Not so long ago, the mention of Croatia would have drawn blank stares. Today, travel magazines are tripping over themselves to proclaim Croatia the next [insert superlative here]. Fact is, the country's status as an Adriatic playground was on recess during the Balkan civil war. The azure waters and countless coves of the Dalmatian Coast remain a yachtsman's dream, while medieval Zagreb and UNESCO-protected Dubrovnik ooze romance as much as ever. Best of all, Croatia has finally shrugged off the shroud of war, restoration is well underway (if not already complete), and travellers are quickly returning.

Go Explore great once again!

Last year we hiked the National Parks Tour with fantastic guide Ivan. This year we returned to Croatia with 2 friends and wanted to hike in Slovenia also. So we called Gorana, told her what we had in mind, and she set up another wonderful tour. We hiked and canoed 6 days in Slovenia’s beautiful Triglav National Park. And then finished with 3 days on the coast in Rovinj where we kayaked and went truffle hunting and ate all things truffle! Ivan guided us again with expertise, flexibility, care and good humor.

Wonderful bespoke 7 day explore from Zagreb to Split

We said what we wanted: hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, great food, amazing scenery and some culture too! And Konan, Gorana and Davor designed us the most amazing custom-made trip that included everything we asked for, and more.

Great tour & great tourguide

We went on the urban bike & canoe tour and it was even better than expected! The guide was really flexible and showed us everything we wanted to see. The canoeing on the lake was a fun thing to do, and different than the regular city tours. We highly recommend exploring Zagreb in such a fun way.

‘Slow travel at its most joyous’: our three-week road trip to Croatia

Rather than bomb down motorways for marathon stretches, the idea was to see new things along the way, such as the great lakes of Germany and a Renaissance town in Italy

H ow far would you go – and how long would you take – to avoid flying and thoroughly embrace the idea of slow travel? In my case, it was 3,167 miles over three weeks. For nearly a decade I had wanted to do a road trip to Croatia, and to get as much out of the journey as the destination itself. Rather than bomb down the motorway for marathon stretches, the idea was to slow down and see new things.

It seemed we had barely rolled off Le Shuttle (the name Eurotunnel reverted to last spring) before my husband and I were out of France and bouncing along Belgium’s bumpy motorways. After a six-hour drive, Germany’s oldest city, Trier, made a pleasant overnight stop, the reconstructed gothic Hauptmarkt square bathed in late afternoon sunlight. Its summer pop-up bar taught me that the Mosel wine region makes some very drinkable rosés.

Germany proved to be one of those places where I couldn’t stop making mental notes on things to come back and explore; and the night we spent in Munich made me wonder why I had never visited before. It wasn’t just handsome Marienplatz and its neo-gothic new town hall; the food shops and stalls on Viktualienmarkt made me seriously hungry.

Rather than stay in the old town, we picked a hotel in Werksviertel, a few S-Bahn stops away. This former industrial area is now full of container bars, sleek hotels (including ours, the Adina , which has a fabulous roof terrace), concert venues and a huge ferris wheel.

Another lovely surprise – the first of many the next day – was Chiemsee, whose waters we glimpsed from the autobahn to Austria. Bavaria’s largest lake shot up my “How on earth have I never heard of this place and can I please come back?” list.

Our entry into Italy’s snappily named Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region coincided nicely with lunchtime. Determined to avoid a dire motorway meal, we found a restaurant in tiny Tarvisio where pizzas came smothered with local San Daniele ham. Later, in Udine, we watched a beautiful Renaissance town wake from its afternoon snooze and come alive with the evening passeggiata . An aperitivo in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, a wander under Piazza della Libertà’s porticos, and a dinner of spaghetti alle vongole is what you want after a five-hour drive. The next day, when we caught our first glimpse of the Adriatic on our way to Trieste and stopped for lunch surrounded by Habsburg stateliness, I was making more plans to return.

Our Italian interlude was so delightful I was almost sorry to whiz through Slovenia and finally into Croatia. My goal was my parents’ region of Lika, in the west of the country, above Zadar, but for once I wasn’t visiting the inland area where my family came from. When I was writing my Croatia travelogue, My Family and Other Enemies , in 2022, I lamented how – with the exception of Plitvice Lakes national park and its surroundings – much of this beautiful region is being left behind in Croatia’s tourism boom. My intention this time was to explore Lika’s western half, where tourism has more of a foothold.

The Hauptmarkt square in Trier, Germany’s oldest city.

It’s easy to find a bucolic bolthole in Lika’s karst mountain landscape of forests, rivers and lakes. An online trawl came up with a wooden cottage outside the village of Perušić. Named IV-AN after its genial owner from nearby Gospić, the cottage was backed by forests and fronted by farmland. The only sounds were birdsong, crickets and, come evening, sizzling meats on the barbecue. My new obsession, the Merlin Bird ID app, picked up the calls of nuthatches, nightingales, owls and shrikes.

The lane behind led to Grabovača cave park , whose Samograd cave had been on my must-see list. Unfortunately, I was recovering from a knee injury and couldn’t tackle the slippery steps. The same went for other activities that are turning Lika into a giant adventure playground – rafting and kayaking on the Gacka and Lika Rivers and Lake Krušćica, mountain biking, quad biking and even just plain old hiking. But Lika has other tricks up its sleeve.

One of the most captivating is in the village of Kuterevo, about 45 minutes’ drive from our cottage. Since 2002, the Bear Refuge has been looking after orphaned brown bears whose mothers had been killed, or who had been rescued from illegal zoos, all kept in spacious enclosures. It’s free to enter, but volunteer wardens are happy to take donations. When it’s hot, the bears lurk in the shade, but on this rainy morning they were all ambling about. The most poignant was Bruno, who arrived in 2019 from an illegal zoo, and he still hasn’t lost his captivity habit of pacing back and forth.

An orphaned brown bear at the refuge in Kuterovo.

Apart from Plitvice, Lika’s other claim to fame is the birthplace of Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla, whose village of Smiljan has spawned a mini-industry. At the Memorial Center Nikola Tesla you don’t have to be a science buff to enjoy the demonstration of the Tesla coil, the film about the inventor’s life, or the exhibits in the house where he was born – beside the 1765 church where Tesla’s father was parish priest.

Smiljan is only three miles from Lika’s county seat, Gospić, and its Lika Museum , housed in an attractive 18th-century building. Among the medieval artefacts and Habsburg furniture is a really good art gallery with an exhibition of early 20th-century photographs. Those photos had me spellbound: my paternal grandfather was Gospić’s railway stationmaster briefly, until his untimely death in 1933, and this gave me a glimpse into his world.

Western Lika’s other major town is Otočac, in the Gacka valley, the focus of much of the area’s outdoor pursuits. Most of the River Gacka is below ground, but what can be seen in this broad valley is serenely beautiful, shaded by trees and full of brown trout. If I couldn’t go kayaking, at least I could find a riverside restaurant – Bistro Ribić and Bumerang were particularly good – and we feasted on two whole grilled trout for €12.

Two of the three major sources that feed into the Gacka are only a few miles apart, both wondrous little watery worlds. At Majerovo Vrilo, old restored mill houses (one still milling flour) form a bridge across the mini rapids; behind them the clear water lay still and blue, with reeds and lily pads adding touches of green to match the forested hills behind. A handful of wooden houses overlook this idyllic spot, and I envied their occupants on their waterside terraces. It was a similar sight at Tonkovićevo Vrilo, where more of this sparkling water was burbling under wooden bridges.

Bottles of plum brandy at Stilanova Lika, near Perušić.

In a region that still shows traces of war and continues to lose its young people to emigration, it was pleasing to see hikers, cyclists, anglers and kayakers enjoying this vast landscape. And one young man was there to keep Lika’s spirit flowing, literally. Ivan Vlainić, 31, is bucking the trend for leaving the countryside, having moved from Zagreb to become the fifth generation to run the family brandy business, Stilanova Lika .

“More young people like me have realised that we can make a living here,” he told me during a tasting of his smooth brandies in the restored family house outside Perušić.

Soon, however, we were leaving Lika to meander along the Istrian coast back towards Italy and a last-minute decision to visit Venice. That night, our simple one-star hotel on Italy’s Lake Iseo astonished us with its five-star view of the sun setting on Monte Isola. A few days in the French Alps and a final night in Burgundy rounded off our road trip. My brain was a jumble of languages, my phone overflowing with photos. It was slow travel at its most joyous, and worth the wait.

Travel from Folkestone to Calais was provided by Le Shuttle (crossings from £87 each way). Seven nights’ self-catering at IV-AN cost £ 600 . Adina Apartment hotel in Munich has self-catering apartments from € 152 a night. Hotel Allegria in Udine has doubles from € 139 B&B . Mary Novakovich’s My Family and Other Enemie s: Life and Travels in Croatia’s Hinterland (Bradt Travel Guides, £9.99) is available from guardianbookshop.com
