Let’s dive in!

Top African Animal Books

  • Larger Animals of East Africa (Collins Safari Guides) (Paperback) by David Hosking & Martin B. Withers .

This is one of the first safari guidebooks I ever bought. The classic African safari field guide to large African wildlife is a great starting point for budding safari enthusiasts.

Larger Animals of East Africa was written by two wildlife experts with over 20 years of experience leading safaris in East Africa . It covers an impressive 76 species and boasts around 200 color photographs.

– What I love about the book : Great illustrations, key facts, distribution, habits, conservation, and status. Very easy to use.

– Criticism : The edition is considerably outdated as it was published in 1997. A refresher could only be beneficial to this quality item.

NB : For a similar but more up-to-date animal guide, consider buying Wildlife of East Africa by Martin B. Withers & David Hosking .

  • The Behavior Guide to African Mammals (Paperback) by Richard D. Estes .

This African animals book is a popular favorite amongst the Africa Freak editorial team, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants to learn more than the physical characteristics of African mammals.

The unique African safari guide compiles many years of fieldwork and research into the behavior of African mammals .

Whether you’re an amateur naturalist or closer to an expert, you’re sure to find this safari guide informative and handy. This guide, beautifully illustrated by Daniel Otte , delves deep into animal behavior and much more.

– What we love about the book : It’s very informative and features detailed illustrations. This safari guidebook is a great African safari companion for amateurs and experts.

– Criticism : This safari guide is harder to read than most guides due to its academic nature.

  • Serengeti: Natural Order on the African Plain (Hardcover) by Mitsuaki Iwago .

I will always remember the day I first got this book from my parents. I was only 5 or 6 at the time, but it is perhaps the one book that truly made me fall in love with Africa and its extraordinary wildlife.

Mitsuaki Iwago is more than just a photographer. He is an artist. While this isn’t exactly a guide, it’s a fantastic book to have for every African safari enthusiast.

Serengeti by Mitsuaki Iwago is a compilation of stunning photography that makes for the perfect coffee table read and conversation starter.

– What I love about the book : Published in 1987, it’s a classic compilation of brilliant photography.

– Criticism : This animals of Africa book doesn’t offer much more than wildlife and landscape imagery, as well as photographic inspiration.

  • Signs of the Wild (Paperback) by Clive Walker .

Signs of the Wild: A Field Guide to the Spoor & Signs of the Mammals of Southern Africa is my “bible” when it comes to field guides for Southern Africa.

Anyone who has spent some time in the African wilderness knows that animal sightings often start with spoor , tracks , and small signs .

This handy guide contains insightful information on animal identification , distribution maps , and color photographs of Southern African mammals.

Here are some of the features that make this guide absolutely special:

– The environmental glossary for key terms and definitions.

– Stunning illustrations for each species.

– Concise descriptions and distribution maps.

–  Animal names translation into the main local languages: Afrikaans, Shona, Ndebele, Zulu, Siswati, Venda, Tswana/Sotho, and Nama/Damara.

– What I particularly like about the book : feces and spoor sections (illustrated) + comparative spoor illustrations.

  • The Safari Companion: A Guide to Watching African Animals (Paperback) by Richard D. Estes .

The most complete guide to watching African mammals. This incredible guide has it all, including behavioral displays of species (territorial marking, aggression, courtship rituals), illustrations , extensive maps , wildlife photography tips , and vegetation zones .

It is one of the best African safari guides for anyone who wants to understand a little more about African mammals. Safari experts will love the black-and-white illustrations and detailed information.

– What I love about the book : The beautiful illustrations and comprehensive information.

– Criticism : This volume can get a little too technical and lacks color photography. It’s also fairly robust and isn’t easy to travel with.

  • Game Ranger in Your Backpack (Paperback) by Megan Emmett & Sean Pattrick .

If you’re going on an African wilderness excursion without a safari tour guide, this is a fantastic safari guide book to take with you. Game Ranger in Your Backpack is a practical and interpretive identification guide for wildlife in South Africa’s Lowveld.

Our editorial team loves this book for its valuable information on mammals , reptiles , birds , amphibians , plants and flowers , and more. If you’re planning an African self-drive safari , this guide is worth getting.

– What we love about this book : Game Ranger in Your Backpack is easy to read, and it includes color-coded chapters and hundreds of stunning pictures.

– Criticism : The book was published in 2011 and could use a revision only because it’s such a great African tour guide substitute.

  • A Photographic Guide to Tracks and Tracking in Southern Africa (Paperback) by Louis Liebenberg .

Everyone from first-time safari-goers to experienced guides could use this African safari field guide on tracking animals in Southern Africa.

This handy photographic guide is filled with insightful images and detailed information that makes tracking easier.

It works well as a reference to pass around on group safaris , a self-drive safari companion , and a refresher for experienced guides.

Like many African wildlife books, the guide comes with distribution maps to illustrate where each species is found in southern Africa.

– What we love about this book : The photographs of droppings and tracks are handy, and the distribution guide provides valuable information.

– Criticism : While this guide is still valuable to have, we’d love to see an update, especially on the distribution maps. Much has changed since the book’s publication in 2001.

  • Tracker Manual (Paperback) by Alex van den Heever , Renias Mhlongo & Karel Benadie .

Tracker Manual is one of the most recently published African wildlife books that focuses on tracking animals in southern Africa.

This safari guidebook provides practical information on tracking around 160 African animals , compiled by industry experts.

Written to be an on-the-go guide, the manual features excellent color photos and simple bulleted text , as well as detailed descriptions for more in-depth information.

– What we love about this book : Tracker Manual is easy to read and offers accessible information for levels of safari fans.

Best Safari Guides on Birding

  • Roberts Bird Guide (Paperback) by Hugh Chittenden , Greg Davies & Ingrid Weiersbye .

Roberts Bird Guide is the ultimate compilation of information on birds in southern Africa. This African guide covers 1000 bird species through photographs and illustrations accompanied by detailed information to make identification easy.

– What we love about this book : It is one of the best African safari books on birding, and is suited for both amateurs and experts.

  • Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa (Paperback) by Norman Arlott (Author), Phil Hockey (Author), Ian Sinclair (Author) & Peter Hayman (Illustrator).

This book is similar to one of the earlier versions (which I have) but is completely revised and updated to include bird species name changes , distribution maps , and revised bird taxonomy .

– Criticism : It is fairly large and hard to carry around when birding in the wilderness.

  • Birds of Southern Africa (Princeton Field Guides) (Paperback) by Ian Sinclair (Author), Phil Hockey (Author), Warwick Tarboton (Author), Peter Hayman (Illustrator) & Norman Arlott (Illustrator).

This impressive guide features around 950 beautiful species of African birds  and over 4000 illustrations by experts. While it’s a fairly old publication (2002), it’s still a great reference for birding in southern Africa.

– What we love about this book : The guide is written by ornithologists and beautifully illustrated. It’s also easy to carry around and has a glossy cover to resist water splashes.

NB : For birds of East Africa, the fully revised and updated new edition (2020) is worth checking out too.

Trees, Plants & Flowers – African Safari Books

  • Trees and Shrubs of Mpumalanga and Kruger National Park (Paperback) by Ernst Schmidt , Mervyn Lotter & Warren McCleland .

If you’re traveling through South Africa’s Mpumalanga province and Kruger National Park , this guide to the region’s trees and shrubs is one of the best safari books to take along with you.

With easy-to-read information and beautiful illustrations and photographs, it’s great for both beginner naturalists and seasoned botanists.

  • Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa (Paperback) by Braam van Wyk & Piet van Wyk .

The ideal read for beginner tree enthusiasts , this field guide is simply written and illustrated by two of southern Africa’s leading tree experts.

The paperback includes detailed information and wonderful color photographs of around 900 tree species in southern Africa, making it one of the best safari books.

General Africa Travel Books

Safari Tales

  • Don’t Look Behind You! : A Safari Guide’s Encounters with Ravenous Lions, Stampeding Elephants, and Lovesick Rhinos by Peter Allison .
“The best compliment you can pay a travel writer is to read his work and feel like you’re right there with him. For more than two hundred pages, I felt like I was in Africa, up to my neck in danger. I don’t even know this guy, but more than once I lay awake at night, worrying for his safety. Enough adventure, action, life lessons, and laughs to fill a movie and four sequels. The fact that Allison survived to write any of this down is a miracle in itself.” — Cash Peters, author of “Gullible’s Travels”.
  • Whatever You Do, Don’t Run : True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide (Paperback) by Peter Allison .
“His misadventures make Whatever You Do, Don’t Run an absorbing read… The material is rich, and Allison is a gifted storyteller. And the only thing stranger than African fiction is African truth.” — National Geographic Adventure “After reading this entrancing memoir, an African safari may move to No. 1 on your travel wish list. The only catch is you’ll want the author as your guide.” — Chicago Sun-Times

Electronic African Wildlife Books

  • Mammals of Southern Africa by Lee Gutteridge .
  • 100 Bushveld Trees by Megan Emmett Parker .
  • First Field Guide to Grasses of Southern Africa by Gideon Smith .
  • Sasol Birds of Southern Africa by Ian Sinclair , Phil Hockey , Warwick Tarboton , Peter Ryan & Niall Perrins .

African Safari Books

The ultimate safari reading list.

Finally booked that safari trip you’ve been dreaming about for years? Now’s the time to start thinking about which African safari books to get reading!

Whether you need a book on safari to read on the plane or, enjoy downtime between game drives, or read up on your destination before you go, don’t just stick to the guide book or wildlife tome. Rather let yourself be whisked away by these memoirs and fiction inspired by the land of safari.

Here’s our pick of the very best African safari books:

Born Free: The Full Story by Joy Adamson

All three books in the ‘Born Free’ trilogy had an incredible impact on wildlife conservation , and are a must-read for a safari trip – especially if you’re taking children or teenager.

Illustrated with beautiful photographs (and with a safari-related film of the same name), the first book tells Joy’s story of acting as a surrogate mother to an orphaned lion cub named Elsa. After three years of teaching the cub how to survive in the world, she sets Elsa free hoping she will discover her real pride in the Kenya grasslands.

Collected African Stories (Vol 1 and 2) by Doris Lessing

She may have been British, but Doris Lessing was a Nobel prize-winning author who lived for 25 years on a farm in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe ) and campaigned against Apartheid in South Africa . Her collection of short stories (taken from This Was The Old Chief’s Country , and four tales from her book Five ) is a fascinating ode to and critique of the Africa she lived in, from the relationship between British colonials and the native people to the African wildlife she encountered every day.

[amazon box=”0718110293″]

[amazon box=”B0084X2WPG”]

Cry of the Kalahari by Mark and Delia Owens

This moving memoir tells the story of two American scientists, who decided to auction off all their belongings and relocate to Africa to study the carnivores of the Kalahari desert – an area with no conservation policies and an increasingly endangered African wildlife .

The book details how they survived seven years in the wilderness, plus details of their research and all the incredible creatures they encountered, from jackals and hyenas to lions and lizards.

[amazon box=”0395647800″]

Don’t Run, Whatever You Do: My Adventures as a Safari Guide, by Peter Allison

This hilarious novel is Bill Bryson-esque in its wit and humour. Peter Allison works as a safari guide in the Okavango Delta , and he recounts his experiences with the wildlife and his wealthy guests – sometimes the latter are more dangerous than the former!

Peppered with a genuine love for the animals and passion for trips that aren’t invasive to the local habitat (despite his guests getting lost naked in the jungle, refusing to wear suitable safari clothes in favour of pink, and letting a squirrel eat their malaria pills), Allison offers essential words of safari wisdom, such as ‘Don’t run, whatever you do ‘ and ‘Never stand behind a frightened zebra’!

[amazon box=”1857886453″]

The Elephant Whisperer: Learning about life, loyalty and freedom from a remarkable herd of elephants, by Lawrence Anthony and Graham Spence

South African Conservationist Lawrence Anthony writes of his experience accepting a herd of rogue elephants on his game reserve at Thula Thula. The herd had escaped from reserves before, and this was their last chance of survival – but the tragic loss of a mother and baby means they don’t make it easy for Lawrence as they try to resist his attempts to bond with them.

Equal parts laugh out loud funny and incredibly moving moments, the book is as much a fascinating insight into life on a reserve as a great read on elephants and other types of wildlife. It’s a bit of an emotional roller-coaster and thoroughly absorbing, so great for a long journey and fighting jetlag!

Must-read books for safari lovers

Leopards in your tent, cobras in your toilet, elephants overturning vehicles … if stories of close encounters with wildlife excite you, then these books for safari lovers are must-reads. Read these safari-themed books to get you into the safari mindset before you go on one, or between game drives while on safari . But be warned, if you’re not heading to the bush anytime soon, they will give you serious bush cravings and have you planning a safari in no time.

Here are 12 books to read on safari and one not to...

Non-fiction books for safari addicts

1. memories of a game ranger by harry wolhuter.

Harry Wolhuter was one of the first game rangers in the Sabi Nature Reserve, which along with the Shingwedzi Nature Reserve, eventually became the Kruger National Park . Originally a hunter, he was recruited by James Stevenson-Hamilton, the first warden of the park, and thereafter became a conservationist, spending 45 years in its service.

The park then was very different from what it is now. Big cats were plentiful and antelopes and elephants were scarce. Rangers rode on horseback and were considered fair game by lions. In fact, Harry was once attacked by two lions and managed to kill one with his knife as it dragged him away. This book is about his fascinating life before and after he joined the park.

Interesting Fact: The Lindanda Memorial in the park marks the spot where Harry killed the lion, and the lion's skin is on display at the Stevenson-Hamilton Library in Skukuza.

Read Memories of a Game Ranger .

2. A Game Ranger Remembers By Bruce Bryden

Bruce Bryden began his career in Kruger National Park in 1971 as a graduate assistant biologist and progressed through the ranks, eventually becoming chief ranger. This book, about his 27 years as a conservationist in the park, makes for a gripping read, with its many nail-biting adventures with wildlife, encounters with poachers and narrow escapes, interspersed with his love of the bush.

Interesting Fact: Despite surviving many close encounters with the Big Five, Bruce lost to the miniscule mosquito, when he contracted malaria and died in 2009.

Read A Game Ranger Remembers .

3. 101 Kruger Tales

Books about Africa

A hyaena snatches a sleeping baby from a tent. A herd of buffalo, a pride of lions and a crocodile engage in a scuffle over a buffalo calf. A leopard helps itself to a family picnic. “101 Kruger Tales” is a compilation of exhilarating real-life accounts of unexpected sightings and encounters that took place in Kruger National Park, as told by the ordinary visitors to the park who experienced them.  You won’t want to put this book down, as these short, easy to read tales remind you how wonderfully unpredictable the bush is.

Fun Fact: When this book was being compiled, I submitted an account of an experience we had in the park. Even though it wasn’t published, I am mentioned in the book as one of those whose “anecdotes stood out”.

Read 101 Kruger Tales .

4. The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony

 Books about Africa

When acclaimed South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of “rogue” wild elephants on his private game reserve in Zululand, his first instinct was to refuse. But the herd would have been killed if he had, so he took them in. It took a while but eventually he created a strong bond with them and became a part of their family. This is a heart-warming tale of love, loyalty and respect between man and elephant.

Interesting fact: Shortly after Lawrence died, the elephant herds came to his home to pay their respects in their unique way.

Read  The Elephant Whisperer

5. An Elephant In My Kitchen By Francois Malherbe Anthony

When Lawrence Anthony died in 2012, his wife, Francoise, who was from Paris , was faced with the tough task of running Thula Thula without him, even though she didn’t know much about conservation. This moving book reminisces about her life with Lawrence and how she coped with the many challenges after his death. It also covers her relationship with the elephant herd, the animal rescue centre she began and the ugly reality of poaching. You will also get some great insights into the running of a game reserve.

Read  An Elephant In My Kitchen

6, 7, 8 - By Kobie Kruger

Mahlangeni – Stories of a game ranger’s family

All Things Wild And Wonderful

The Wilderness Family

When Kobie Kruger moved with her game ranger husband and three young daughters to a remote station in Kruger National Park, she was warned that it would not be easy. Her husband was away for long periods at a time, taking the kids to school and going shopping involved crossing hippo-infested rivers, and hair-raising encounters with wildlife were frequent. However their time in the park turned out to be some of the most magical years of their lives.

In this series of books, Kobie recounts their extraordinary adventures in South Africa’s largest game reserve.

9. Whatever you do don’t run by Peter Allison

I’ve always maintained that safari guides tell the most interesting tales, and this book is proof of that. It will enlighten you as to what a safari guide’s life is really like. Originally from Australia, Peter Allison worked as a top safari guide in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. He writes about his misadventures and often humorous encounters with wildlife and the wealthy (but often strange) clients that frequent the private reserves.

Read  Whatever you do don’t run .

10. Msomi and Me

Msomi and Me

“Msomi and Me” tells the story of how a conversationist began a game lodge with the help of his right-hand man and friend, Msomi. It is interspersed with delightful anecdotes about life at a game lodge, and their challenges, as well as wildlife tales from African folklore. There are some unexpected twists in the book too.

Read Msomi and Me .

Fiction Books to read on safari

11 & 12 By James Hendry

A Year in the Wild

Back to the Bush: Another Year in the Wild

James Hendry may be familiar to many safari lovers as a live safari broadcast presenter. He is also a game ranger, naturalist, and the author of two light-hearted, entertaining books about two brothers who work in the fictional Sasekile Private Game Reserve. You can expect amusing tales of what goes on behind the scenes at an upmarket safari lodge, the eccentric staff employed there and the fascinating guests who visit the lodge.

What not to read before you go on safari

Man eaters of tsavo by john henry patterson.

This is a true story about a pair of man-eating lions that terrorised labourers during the construction of a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. More than one hundred and thirty people were killed over nine months, eventually completely halting construction because the workers were too terrified to continue. Colonel John Henry Patterson, the brave chief engineer, then took matters into his own hands and single-handedly brought an end to their nine-month reign of terror.

This book was adapted into a movie three times, the latest version being the 1996 movie “The Ghost and the Darkness” , starring Val Kilmer.

Interesting fact: The Tsavo lions were maneless males. Their bodies were sold to the Field Museum in Chicago. They were stuffed and can be found there to this day.

Although there are many books about wildlife experiences, these are some of those that I’ve enjoyed the most. I will be updating this list as I discover more great books for safari lovers and addicts. What are your favourite books about wildlife and safaris?

" If you want to see things, go to Europe. But if you want to experience things, come to Africa". Peter Allison

Great options! I've been on safaris twice and definitely habe somewhat relatable stories!

Great suggestions... Admit I havent read any of them, but love a good book post! Saving it for reading inspiration

Loved the book by Kobie Kruger (three titles but one story?). Been to many game parks and experienced some wonderful safaris.

Yes, there were 3 books about their adventures 🙂

Haven’t really experienced safaris like the African safaris, but I really am very interested. Hope to get a chance to read some of these books to gain some inspiration.

I can't say I've ever read any of these books, but some of the titles are quite funny which appeals to me! I need to add some books to my reading list so I'll look into a couple of these - thanks!

How Much Does a Safari Cost?

African safaris are growing in popularity and are more accessible than ever. There’s much to consider when planning a safari adventure, from the destination to your packing list.

The safari experience varies widely depending on how you like to travel, whether that’s in luxury or traditional safari camping. No matter your travel style, there’s a safari option for you.

Learn about your options in our African safari adventure guide.

An aerial photo of the great migration in Kenya.

Cost is the most common question that people ask Google about safaris. Traditionally popular amongst retirees, you might assume safaris are so expensive that you need to save your entire life for the experience. That’s not (always) the case.

According to The New York Times , a safari can cost between $200 and $1,000 per person, per day . That’s a big range but means you’ve got a great chance of finding a safari within your budget.

Many factors contribute to the overall cost of a safari, including your preferred travel style, the length of your trip, and the season. For example, witnessing the Great Migration at any point in its cycle is more costly than visiting in the off-season.

During the Great Migration, more than 2 million animals migrate continually clockwise across the Serengeti and Masai Mara in Eastern Africa. This event happens throughout the year with June and July presenting the best opportunity to see the famous wildebeest crossing of Kenya’s Mara River.

Park fees are usually included in the tour operator’s fee. However, if you’re DIY-ing your safari, you can expect to pay anywhere from $27 per adult at Kruger National Park in South Africa to $80 at Masai Mara in Kenya .

Lastly, airfare can also bring up the overall cost of your safari vacation, but this is a great opportunity to reduce your expenses by using points and miles. Here’s our guide to the best ways to fly to Africa with points and miles .

What To Expect on an African Safari

There are 2 regions in Africa where you can go on a safari: Eastern Africa and Southern Africa.

Eastern African countries where you can take a safari include Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Southern African countries to visit for a safari are Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Each of these countries has a unique landscape and experiences that differ from one another, but you can’t go wrong no matter where you decide to go .

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda are unique to East Africa. It’s also easy to add-on a visit to the tropical island of Zanzibar in Tanzania. Seychelles in the Indian Ocean is another island option in East Africa.

In Southern Africa, you can experience dramatic landscapes on a desert safari in Namibia or aquatic safaris in Botswana. Popular stop Victoria Falls borders Zambia and Zimbabwe and is almost twice the size of Niagara Falls. Mauritius, east of Madagascar , is an island getaway option on a Southern Africa safari .

You can choose either overland or fly-in safaris. The difference between these 2 options is that you either drive and spend more time in transit from park to park or save time by flying. Fly-in safaris are common on both Eastern and Southern African safaris.

Overland or driving safaris are much more common in Eastern Africa.

While on a safari, most people hope to see the Big 5 (African bush elephant, African buffalo, leopard, lion, and black rhino), which you can see in Eastern and Southern Africa.

In Eastern Africa, your best bet to see all 5 is in Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, Masai Mara in Kenya, and on some private reserves also in Kenya. In Southern Africa, you can catch sight of these animals at Kruger National Park’s private reserves.

A private reserve is also known as a conservancy and has more safari activities than national parks, which are public .

A few wildebeest graze near a safari jeep.

The Great Migration takes place in Eastern Africa’s Serengeti and Masai Mara . Wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, and more migrate by the millions from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania through the Serengeti, across the Masai Mara in Kenya, and back again.

The animals follow this path instinctively throughout the year . The migration takes them through the circle of life (mating, birthing young, and even death by predators during the most vulnerable portions of the migration).

Whether you elect to see the Big 5 in Southern Africa (or Eastern Africa) or witness The Great Migration in Eastern Africa, you can’t go wrong.

Each day of your safari vacation will likely start with an early morning game drive to see animals such as lions that prefer cooler morning temperatures. The morning drive lasts for several hours, so be sure to dress comfortably.

You’ll have a break in the late morning and afternoon before an opportunity to take another game drive at night to see the nocturnal animals. When you aren’t on a game drive, you can enjoy cultural immersion opportunities with locals, enjoy a bush meal (a meal eaten in the bush), or even high tea. It all depends on your safari.

Each safari itinerary is different, so be sure to ask your guide and the company exactly what your day will look like before your trip.

What To Pack for a Safari

A safari is not the time to overpack. You’ll be required to weigh your luggage before you can board if you’re arriving for your safari by shared charter plane, which is common for Southern Africa safaris.

A duffel bag without wheels is recommended to save some weight. The smaller bag will also guarantee that you don’t overpack.

Now that you’ve got the right luggage, what should you bring on a safari?

Earth tones that help you blend into the natural scenery and landscapes are the best colors to wear on safari .

Don’t forget to bring sunscreen as well as a sun hat for protection during daytime game drives . It’s also a good idea to bring lightweight long sleeve shirts for further sun protection. Comfortable shorts or cut-off pants that can go from day to night will save you room in your luggage.

A lightweight jacket or sweater is essential for evenings no matter what time of year you go on a safari . Temperatures can drop below freezing in South Africa.

Pack comfortable sneakers for daytime and sandals or flip-flops for lounging at camp or in the lodge.

While some smartphone cameras can rival the best traditional cameras, you may want to invest in a camera with a powerful zoom lens .

Lastly, binoculars are a must-have on any African safari . Your lodge or campsite may provide binoculars that you can borrow, but you should pack your own to be safe. You wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to see as much as you can.

Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about what vaccinations you’ll need before traveling to your chosen country. In addition to the yellow fever vaccine, they may recommend taking malaria pills before you leave and bringing malaria medication with you.

In your first aid bag , bring anti-nausea medicine, bandages, an antihistamine, and pain medication such as Advil or Tylenol.

Bug spray is also a must. Look for a spray with the highest concentration of DEET you can find to avoid unwanted bug bites .

DEET is in many insect repellants and could help you to avoid malaria-carrying mosquitos during your African safari. Bugs don’t like the taste or smell of DEET and it “repels” them from biting you.

African Safari Accommodation Types

A couple toast while on safari.

There are a few camping options to consider for your African safari accommodations.

True adventurers might consider what’s sometimes called adventure camping . During adventure camping, you help your guide pack up the jeep, set up camp, and cook all the meals. This is a great way to get to know your guide and avoid the higher price tag of luxury accommodations.

Another option is full-assisted camping, which is a slightly less labor-intensive option that sometimes includes an en suite bathroom inside of your tent. If there isn’t a bathroom included, there might be a bush toilet or bucket shower for you to use.

2- to 4-star accommodations are something between camping and lodges. They might be huts, bungalows, or even hotels, and the amenities vary from place to place.

The main difference between these accommodation types and camping is 4 walls and indoor bathrooms. At a 2- to 4-star accommodation, you won’t be expected to cook your own food.

Safari lodges are essentially hotels that you can stay at while on a safari.

The view from Bwindi Lodge by Volcanoes Safari in Uganda.

Lodges often have dozens of rooms and can accommodate many more travelers than other accommodation options. Thanks to their solid builds, lodges are a great option for those who don’t want to sleep outdoors or worry about wild animals at night.

Lodges are fully staffed and sometimes include a spa, fitness center, and pool .

Tented camps are considered the truest way to experience a safari . They feature full beds and en suite bathrooms in a canvas tent. In a way, tent camps are the best of both camping and lodge accommodations.

Travelers can look forward to some camps offering dining options, including 3-course meals.

If you’re interested in this kind of experience but still want to travel more sustainably, there are eco-tented camps. Eco-tented camps are designed to have a minimal environmental impact by using solar power for electricity and not having any permanent structures.

There are safari accommodations for every type of traveler, budget, and travel style. Each of these accommodation types can be found in both Eastern and Southern Africa.

Top-rated African Safari Tour Companies

Choosing a safari tour company for this possibly once-in-a-lifetime experience can be a difficult task. To get you started and to give you an idea of what’s out there, consider these 5 highly-rated safari companies:

A woman on safari overlooks the land from inside of a jeep.

Travel + Leisure rated Micato Safaris the #1 best safari outfitter in the world 10 times .

Micato Safaris specializes in luxury safaris, both custom and classic, in Africa and India. A classic safari is a small group with specific departure dates. A custom safari is a private tour for just your group, flexible with your schedule needs, and designed around only what you want to see and do.

Each safari includes either a single country or several countries across Eastern or Southern Africa. For example, The Hemingway Wing Safari tour starts out in Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau and the Masai Mara-Serengeti before heading to Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.

Micato Safaris include all meals , a 24/7 concierge team, all gratuities, airport transfers, game and national park fees, and conservancy fees. You’ll also get a safari swag bag that comes with a bush hat, a specially-designed duffel bag, a flashlight, and more.

Travelers can join a small group tour for anywhere from 10 to 17 days. The price range for these tours is between $19,700 and $29,350 per person in 2024. Accommodation options include lodges, hotels, and tented camps .

A lion lays in front of a branded &Beyond safari vehicle.

&Beyond is another luxury safari operator that ranks highly among the best safari companies. Like many safari companies in Africa, &Beyond strives to promote conservation through responsible tourism through partnerships across its tour locations in Africa, Asia, and South America .

In Africa, travelers can choose between a number of safari tours such as a family safari in Namibia. Other exciting tour itineraries include a visit to Sabi Sands Game Reserve in Zimbabwe or a gorilla trek in Rwanda.

&Beyond has 29 privately-owned lodges throughout Africa in both safari and beach locations such as Zanzibar, Tanzania. You can choose to stay at one of these lodges independently where some rates include game drives as well as full board. Or you can elect to join a small group or tailor-made journey.

Small group journeys present a unique opportunity for safari-goers to go beyond watching wildlife from the safety of their jeep. Tour topics include conservation and wildlife research, and a WILDeconomy Masterclass in partnership with African Leadership University . In the latter tour, travelers partake in an interactive and educational safari to learn about sustainable tourism in the safari industry.

Be sure to check out &Beyond’s otherwordly desert safaris and lodges in Namibia .

&Beyond’s small group journeys are as short as 5 nights and start at $4,755 per person for 2023 tours.

Thomson Safaris has been a trusted safari tour company in Tanzania and Kilimanjaro for 40 years. Its tours feature custom Land Rover Defenders, guides born and raised in Tanzania, and luxurious camps that move in sync with wildlife patterns.

The company also owns an eco-resort in the Ngorongoro highlands in Tanzania.

In addition to classic safaris, Thomson Safaris offers family safaris, photography workshops, private safaris, and specialty safaris. Culinary, honeymoon, and flying safaris are all considered specialty safaris .

Thomson Safaris’ Signature Safari is 12 days and 11 nights and takes safari-goers to Serengeti Nature Refuge, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and more. This itinerary is priced from $10,890 per adult.

For those seeking an especially challenging experience, you can trek Kilimanjaro with Thomson Treks . Treks range from 6 to 10 days with varying pricing, amenities, and physical challenge. Prices start at $4,290 per person for double occupancy.

The Maasai people in the Maasai Mara Natural Reserve dressed in red and standing around a small fire.

Opened in 2015, Tangulia Mara is the first Maasai-owned camp in the Mara . The Masai Mara in Kenya is known locally as simply the Mara, but named in honor of the Maasai people who are the region’s ancestral inhabitants.

Tangulia Mara offers game drives, guided walking safaris, Maasai village visits, and more. The camp is on the western boundary of the Mara Reserve and is ideally situated to witness the Great Migration when it crosses the Mara River.

The closest airport to the Masai Mara is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Kenya. It is about a 6-hour drive from the airport to the closest park entrance.

Gorilla trekking with Volcanoes Safaris.

Volcanoes Safaris is a leading gorilla and chimpanzee ecotourism company located in Uganda and Rwanda. The company offers lodges and safaris for travelers to learn more about the gorilla and chimpanzee populations in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

An active community partner, Volcanoes Safaris has partnered on several community projects in its 25-year history, including the Kyambura Women’s Coffee Cooperative . The cooperative works to train women in a sustainable income source through coffee production.

As far as its lodges and safaris, travelers can choose between 5 lodges and 4 safaris. Bwindi Lodge , featuring views of the impenetrable forest — named for the dense bamboo and other foliage that makes it nearly impossible to enter on foot — might be the company’s most unique lodge and is a starting point for heading out on a gorilla trek.

Safaris offer the chance to see mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha in Uganda. The 4- to 10-day safaris start at $4,035 per person for double occupancy.

Tour package safaris might give you sticker shock. But you have options if you’re not ready to invest in a luxury safari.

You can do a safari independently on a self-driving tour through Kruger National Park in South Africa or Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park between South Africa and Botswana. Rent a car through Avis Safari Rentals or Drive Botswana . Drive Botswana is located in Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe as well as Botswana.

You can also independently reserve a suite at the all-new JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Rooms come with meals (both on-property and bush meals), game drives, airstrip transfers, and more. Rates start at $1,414 per night. At the time of writing, there were no award nights available.

Traveling in the low season for your preferred destination, choosing accommodations outside of the national park, and joining a group safari versus a private safari are ways to save money on an African safari.

Best Ways To Book a Safari

Oryx Walking in Sossusvlei Namibia

Whether you choose to book your safari through a safari company or plan a do-it-yourself/driving safari, you have options when it comes time to book.

If you’re making a significant investment in your safari vacation , you might want to use a travel agent with expertise in this type of trip. In fact, some safari companies, usually the higher-end ones, will only work with travel agents or designers.

A bonus to working with a travel professional is that it takes all the guesswork out of every detail and you have someone to answer all of your questions directly.

Lastly, a travel agent who specializes in safaris has likely gone on several safaris themselves . They’ve probably even worked with the exact company that will be handling your safari and can give you insider tips to make the most of your trip.

UP’s very own Leigh Rowan can help organize the safari of a lifetime! From planning to management, Leigh and his team will make sure your safari trip is perfect, with 24/7 global support. Submit your request to [email protected] .

Websites like safaribookings.com let you search and compare hundreds of safari companies at once . Just choose your country and your preferred travel dates, and the website will return all the safaris that match your query. You can filter your results based on tour length, star rating, and even travel style.

If you’d like to experience a self-drive safari, you can book directly through Avis Safari Rentals or Drive Botswana.
