Travel to Thailand

The country in Asia where the official language is Thai and the currency Baht (THB), is Thailand.

Bangkok is the capital and also one of the most visited cities.

There are other interesting cities like Samut Prakan, Mueang Nonthaburi, Udon Thani, Chon Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima and many others where you can travel during your journey to Thailand.

While exploring Thailand make sure you try some of the best local specialities like Massaman Curry, Pad Kra Prao, Kao Ka Moo, Khao Soi, and Yam Nua (Beef Salad).

There are many international airports in Thailand where you can land; the largest is Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).

General information about Thailand

Thailand doesn’t have Euro or US dollars, we recommend you exchange cash for Baht (THB) before your trip for the best rates. Although credit and debit cards are also universally accepted throughout the country, we highly advise you to carry a small amount of cash and coins.

With a population of roughly 69.95 million, Thailand is one of the top 100 most populated countries in the world.

The official language of Thailand is Thai. However, the majority of the population can speak one more language besides their native one; usually it is Isan, Kam Mueang, Pak Tai, Malay, and English.

Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Myanmar are neighbours of Thailand.

Thailand has a tropical savanna climate. If you are going from Europe, where the climate is more temperate, it would be nice to to pack light clothes made out of breathable materials.

You can use the 45 days Visa Exemption stamp on each visit. There is no need to get a visa. Please check this information on this page: https://www.thaiembassy.com/weekly-updates/thailand-travel-restrictions-for-november-2022

Yordmanu, I have a current, one year ‘retirement’ visa extension and have just returned to UK after a 90 day Thailand Pass trip. I’ve booked a one-way flight back to Thailand for the 9th. November – Will I have to buy insurance & will I be allowed to travel back to Thailand on this one-way ticket? I have an a Thailand address (30 year lease) and a history of travellng back & forth. Peter

Dear Peter,

Insurance is now an optional. It’s not compulsory but still recommended.

Hello. We will travel to Phuket on 1 October. My husband has a dose of vaccine and has been infected with covid twice. Does he have to prove a negative test or does he have to have proof from the doctor that he has had covid twice and has a vaccine? I am not vaccinated but have undergone covid 2 times the children aged 14 and 11 have not been vaccinated, should they have a test before we arrive? Albina

If fully vaccinated, just vaccination certificate and certificate of recovery since he got infected.

For unvaccinated, you need to have negative RT PCR within 72 hours of your arrival. Same procedure with your kids.

I am a Thailand passport holder and returning to Chiang Mai from Kuala Lumpur. What requirements do I need to enter Thailand?

Do you know the phone number of the Thai embassy in Thailand?

hi, i have 1 question. how about unvaccinated kids age 8-year-old and 4++-year-old?do they need to do pcr test?

If you are fully vaccinated , No. If unvaccinated, same procedure with parents.

' srcset=

I’m seeing conflicting info. Some websites say yes or no, regarding that before departing to thailand, one must show a negative pcr test. For the most part, it seems like no, you don’t have to.. but then more reputable sites say yes, people need to.

so which is it? planning to depart in october of 2022

Dear Balrto,

Negative RT PCR is for those unvaccinated.

' srcset=

Is a “supervised RAT travel test” signed and witnessed by a pharmacist in Australia permitted for entry to Thailand?

Dear Nathan,

Yes, it should be a professional RAT.

' srcset=

Me and my friends will fly to Phuket. Me and my husband have international certificate of vaccination without QR-code on Covid-19. Vaccine is comirnaty (we have two dose and booster) . On website: https://www.tatnews.org/2022/06/covid-19-vaccine-guide-for-travellers-to-thailand/ The information is that when vaccine comirnaty, the 2nd dose must be after 3 weeks, but in my and husband’s certificate is after 4 weeks (first – 19.05.2022, second – 16.06.2022 and booster is 22.01.2022). Is this a problem? Do we need to take a test? Thx You in advance.

No, it means 3 weeks after your shot, more than 21 days in valid.

' srcset=

Do I need to purchase health insurance if I’m only staying in Bangkok for 1 day since my destination is the following day when I arrived in Bandkok?

Insurance is optional. Not compulsory but still recommended.

' srcset=

Not really, any proof that you are fully vaccinated will be accepted. If so, then maybe it’s the airlines requirements.

Yes, any proof that you are fully vaccinated.

' srcset=

On your website it says that the test should be done with 72 hours before departure. So is it before departure or arrival? A international flight might take More 30 hours. If there is a delay, 72 hours will easily be passed. If the test is invalid upon arrival, what should be done?

Validity should be within 72 hours of arrival.

I receive my PCR test result by email. Do I need to print it out to show upon arrival? If my result is expired upon arrival, can I do a pcr test I the airport? If so, how much is it?

Hi, thank you for your work. So unvaccinated travelers who got Covid recently in a month can submit a recovery certificate instead of a negative test result to enter Thailand. Is that right that I understand? or must submit a negative test result even though got Covid recently? Also, what is the acceptable date for a recent recovery? Is it 30 days or 40days?

If you recovered at covid, you need to get certificate of recovery . You still need to get a 72 hours negative RT PCR if you are unvaccinated, that is the requirements for unvaccinated traveler.

Hi Maqsood,

Insurance is not compulsory but highly suggested.

Hi, I am unvaccinated and got Covid 2 weeks ago and gonna visit Thailand in 14days. In this case, recovery certificate can be submitted instead of negative results from ATK or PCR test? Because dead covid virus can be left in the body and some people got still positive results after they got covid. I will flight from Korea.

Yes, bring your certificate of recovery.

Thank you. So do you mean that I can submit a recovery certificate in recent instead of the negative test result? Is that right that I understand?

You need to bring the certificate of you recovery so the health representative can check the level status of your infection just incase you get positive result again.

I cannot enter into Thailand within 14th days from tested positive. Correct? Thailand Embassy of Japan and Singapore informed me like that.

As long as you are fully recovered and tested negative after your quarantine period, you can able to travel in Thailand.

For those previously infected with COVID-19 are considered fully vaccinated if they have received a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine at any time after their recovery.

Please be advised that your proof or medical record of COVID-19 recovery must be shown alongside your single-dose vaccination certificate.

Hi, I’m from Malaysia. Yesterday on 1 August 2022 I tested positive for covid-19 by using the RTK-Nasal swab self-test kit. According to Ministry of Health of Malaysia, I only need to quarantine for 7 days since I have taken the 3 dos of the covid-19 vaccine. However, I am required to attend a regional meeting in Bangkok on 15 August 2022. Can I enter Bangkok on the 14 of August since we will be traveling to Bangkok 1 day earlier?

Sorry to hear that. Yes, you can still travel to Thailand as long as after you have quarantined you tested negative. And just provide your proof or medical record of COVID-19 recovery alongside of your vaccination certificate.

Hello Robert,

Hello Bell,

There’s no minimum days you can stay on each area in Thailand, as long as your visa are still valid you are free to travel around.

I have one shot of a two-shot vaccine + a booster (in total 2 shots). The reason I only had one shot the first time is because I had been infected with COVID and therefore according to local regulations one shot was enough. Am I considered fully vaccinated for travel to Thailand?

Thank you for your prompt response. To clear out, I have proof that I was tested positive and then subsequently negative test. The report is in Italian (I live in Italy), but the words “positivo” and “negativo” are pretty clear. The tests were conducted by an accredited private hospital in Milan, Italy. I assume I would be able to use this?

If you can provide the English translation that would be better, but if you only have written in Italian you can still use that.

' srcset=

Hi there, I am from UK. I plan to visit Thailand in mid of August 2022 with my 12 years old son. I had 3 Covid Vaccines but my son hasn’t receive them yet. Does my son need to do Fit to Fly Pro-Antigen Covid test or he doesn’t need to do it? Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.

Hello Tidaratt,

' srcset=

Will I be able to enter Thailand with the negative result of PCR Test 72 hrs? The lab has the PCR Test. They said the PCR Test and the RT-PCR Test is the same thing.

Hello Usanee,

The RT-PCR test and PCR test are different, however, any of those are accepted as long as it was issued by a certified Clinic or Hospital, containing personal information of the travelers and information of the vaccine (name, batch number, dates).

' srcset=

Anyone who tests positive, regardless of whether they have recovered from COVID-19 in the last 90 days, are required to quarantine at their own expense for 10-14 days or possibly longer depending on their situation and under the direction of public health officials.

' srcset=

Thailand is located almost exactly on the opposite side of the world from the United States, so finding a flight to Thailand can be a bit of a hassle.

However, once you have arrived in Thailand, all of the painful travel and planning becomes well worth it. From the unique beaches of Phuket to the bustling markets of Chiang Mai and everything else in between.

Finding flights to Thailand from the US can be done with ease with a little bit of knowledge on how to shop for flights and the best airlines to take you there.

Rather you’re looking for the cheapest flight, the quickest way there, or how to get there with the least amount of discomfort.

Bottom Line Up Front:  As flight schedules tend to vary, these are the airlines I’d check…

  • Emirates ( Direct / WayAway ): Generally faster flights, fewer layovers
  • EVA Air : ( Direct / WayAway ): Best from San Francisco, shortest layovers
  • Delta ( Direct / WayAway ): Partnerships with Korean Air and China Airlines
  • American ( Direct / WayAway ): Partnerships with China Southern
  • Turkish Airlines ( Direct / WayAway ): Perks, comfort & amenities
  • Singapore Airlines ( Direct / WayAway ): Best true luxury First Class

Cheapest Airline to Fly to Thailand: China Southern (Best to Bangkok)

China Southern Airlines to Thailand

On average, looking at all of the times and airports that you could fly into, China Southern is the most budget-friendly airline from the west coast.

Prices drop as low as $533 round trip through China Southern if you are following all of the criteria above.

If you are flying out of the East coast, the cheapest airline to fly through is Air China. Leaving from John F Kennedy International Airport, you can find prices as low as $531 roundtrip through Air China.

The best way to find budget-friendly flights always is to watch flights over time. You can do this very simply by going to Google flights. Simply search for the flight you are looking for, time and destination, then turn on “track prices”.

American Airlines AAdvantage Member?

If you are an AAdvantage member, they have a partnership with China Southern, meaning you can use your miles & loyalty program to book via your American account.

  • Create an AAdvantage account : If you don’t already have one, sign up for a free AAdvantage account on the American Airlines website.
  • Accumulate AAdvantage miles : You can earn miles through flights, car rentals, hotel stays, or purchases with American Airlines’ partners. You can also purchase miles directly from American Airlines.
  • Search for Flight Availability : To use your miles on a China Southern flight, you need to check for “sAAver” award availability on the American Airlines website. Enter your travel details (destination, dates) and select “Redeem miles”.
  • Select China Southern Airlines : In the search results, look for flights operated by China Southern Airlines. If there’s no direct flight, it’s possible to book a flight with multiple airlines, as long as they’re all part of the Oneworld alliance.
  • Book the flight : Once you find a suitable flight, proceed with the booking process. The number of miles needed to book the flight will be displayed, and you’ll have the option to pay with miles.  I recommend calling American Airlines directly, as the website can be problematic for this type of booking. 1-800-882-8880.
  • Confirm your Booking : Review all the details, then confirm your booking. You’ll receive a confirmation email from American Airlines with your flight details.
  • Contact China Southern Airlines : After booking, it’s a good idea to contact China Southern Airlines to confirm your flight and seat assignments.

Quickest Airline to Thailand: China Airlines

Thailand Travel

Flying out of San Francisco International Airport, China Airlines is the quickest airline to go through.

They can get you to Thailand in 18 ½ hours and get you back home in as little as 16 ½ hours. Each way only has one short stop total along the way.

If you must fly out of the East coast, fly out of John F Kennedy International airport on Air China.

When flying from the East coast they fly you right over the north pole rather than directly around the earth because that is the shortest way. Therefore, there really is no short way from the east coast. Air China can get you to Thailand in 20 hours and get you back in 23 ½ hours.

For such a long flight, comfort is key in making it there without a stiff back and feeling exhausted. Once you land in Thailand you want to feel energized and ready to go for your vacation. Which is still very possible, even with an 18-hour flight.

If money and time aren’t an issue, you can get to Thailand without feeling like you ever left the comforts of your home. With airlines offering anything from basically tiny apartments to free movies and wifi. You can start your Thailand vacation off right with these airlines listed below.

Runner Up: Thai Airways

Getting to Thailand fast is not really an option. After all, it is over 8,000 miles away from the United States and that’s if you could fly straight there. You are going to have a long flight no matter where you fly from or how you do it.

There are no straight-through flights to Thailand from anywhere in the United States.

Thai Airways used to provide a straight-through flight from Los Angeles and John F Kennedy, but those stopped in 2012 due to a loss in profitability. Thai airways may start the straight-through flights again in the future, but that is still not certain.

There are faster and slower ways to get to and from Thailand. If you follow these guidelines, you will most likely find the fastest way to Thailand.

Best First Class Suites to Thailand: Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines, hands down, offer the best first-class suites to Thailand. The seats offer your own private area with a door that can be closed for maximum privacy.

There is a separate bed from the actual seat in these suites that can be turned into a double bed if you have two seats. You can also enjoy free movies and TV on the 32-inch flat-screen TV, along with unlimited champagne.

The only downside is that you will have to make 2 transfer stops if leaving from San Francisco on the way to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport.

One in Hong Kong and one in Singapore. However, with the purchase of these suites, you get access to The Private Room at Changi Airport in Singapore, which offers a la carte dining.

Best First Class: Cathay Pacific

With the largest seat on the market, Cathay Pacific takes the prize for best first-class seats to Thailand. These seats are 36 inches wide and can fit up to 3 people in them comfortably. The seat also comes with one of the most comfortable lie-flat beds you can experience.

Service onboard Cathay Pacific first class is unbeatable. You’ll enjoy multiple course meals, including caviar, champagne, and chocolates. Along with complimentary pajamas! The staff is very friendly and accommodating as well. You can also get to Bangkok from San Francisco with only one stop in Hong Kong.

Best Economy: Emirates Economy

If you don’t have an abundant amount of money to spend on first-class seats, but would still like to be more comfortable than the average budget airline, Emirates Economy seats are the most comfortable. They have the most seat room out of all airlines flying to Thailand with a seat pitch (legroom) of 33-34 inches and a width of 18 inches.

Emirates economy seats also come equipped with a large library of free entertainment and wifi at cost. You will receive an amenity kit when boarding Emirates as well. The kit includes an eye mask, earplugs, toothbrush, toothpaste, and socks.

flights to thailand from usa

Thailand is one of the cheapest countries to travel in once you get there.

You can get anything from fine dining to an hour massage for under USD 10. The most expensive part of your trip will most likely be the flight to get there.

Depending on how long you are staying, flights can sometimes cost just as much or more than your whole entire vacation in Thailand. You don’t always have to spend an arm and a leg getting there though.

If your main priority is spending as little as possible getting there and not comfort or getting there fast, here is some guidance.

Tips and Tricks for Flying to Thailand

Fly into bangkok.

Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok’s international airport, is the cheapest airport to fly into Thailand. Flights can be up to $200 cheaper than if you were to fly into Phuket or Chang Mai.

Spend a couple of nights exploring the city and then make your way to your destination through cheaper airlines, like Air Asia, or by overnight bus or train.

Fly on a Tuesday

You can save around $50 a flight by departing and returning from Thailand on a Tuesday. Do not try to fly on Saturdays if you are trying to save a little more money. You will end up paying on average $80 more. Mondays and Wednesdays are also decent days to fly to and from Thailand.

Shop international airlines

The cheapest flights on a U.S. airline are through Delta, costing as little as $1,005 roundtrip. If you look at international airlines, such as Air China or China Southern, you can find flights for as cheap as $585 roundtrip from Los Angeles International Airport and $535 from John F Kennedy International Airport.

Travel in Spring and Fall

Summertime is Thailand’s peak tourist season. Prices can reach well above $1,000 during this time, even on International airlines. Thailand stays fairly warm year-round, so you’ll still have a great vacation if you go during early spring and late fall.

Further Read:  Best Times to Visit Thailand .

Here’s a helpful chart with some of the various average prices by months:

Fly From San Francisco International Airport

The east coast is roughly 400 miles further than flying from the west coast. The shortest flights from the United States are found on the west coast, specifically out of San Francisco.

If you fly out of Los Angeles it may add on just an hour or two, but definitely choose San Francisco International airport if you have the choice.

Choose flights with only 1 stop

The more stops along the way, the more travel time you are adding. Each transfer has at least a one-hour time span between your flight landing and your next flight taking off. Rather you are flying from the east coast or the west coast, you can find flights with only one stop along the way.

Fly early in the morning

There tend to be fewer delays and shorter lines if you fly early in the morning. Due to air traffic, delays get worse throughout the day, starting around 8 a.m. and reaching a peak at 6 p.m.

The airports are also less crowded and have shorter lines in the morning because nobody else wants to start their vacation early.

Overall Best Airline for Flights to Thailand from the US

Out of all this information on the most comfortable, fastest, and budget-friendly airlines, the most well-rounded of all categories is Air China when flying to Thailand. It came in number one on some categories and number two in almost any other category.

Air China is the cheapest airline to fly through when coming from John F Kenndy airport and the second cheapest, if not about the same, airline if flying from San Francisco. Prices are as low as $531 roundtrip if you go during spring or fall and you’re flying into Bangkok. That is about $50 cheaper than the next cheapest airline.

The quickest airline to get you to Thailand from John F Kennedy airport is Air China . I would only fly out of the east coast if you have to though because it takes about 3 hours longer to get there. Air China is the second-fastest from the west coast, getting you there with only an extra hour of time than China Airlines.

Air China’s seats are not that far off from Emirates seats in comfortability. Their seat pitch is 31-33 inches, which is only a couple inches short or even the same as Emirates legroom. The width of the seats is also barely short or about the same as Emirates being 17-18 inches. You are also equipped with FREE wifi aboard Air China.

Remember to always shop around for a few days. Flight times, prices, and availability can change daily. Google flights flight tracker is a great tool because they send you e-mails every time there is an update on flights.  Remember to have fun while shopping for flights! You are going to Thailand, “the land of smiles.”

Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla Provinces – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Periodic violence directed mostly at Thai government interests by a domestic insurgency continues to affect security in the southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla. In Songkhla, the insurgency is most active in the districts of Chana, Thepha, Nathawat, and Saba Yoi. U.S. citizens are at risk of death or injury due to the possibility of indiscriminate attacks in public places.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these provinces as U.S government employees must obtain special authorization to travel to these provinces.

  • Thai immigration officials or airline staff may ask for your onward/return ticket.
  • Business travelers, U.S. government employees travelling on official business, teachers, retirees, and those planning to stay longer than 30 days should check with the  Royal Thai Embassy about visa requirements .
  • If you overstay your visa, you will be fined. Depending on the length of overstay, you may also be arrested, detained, deported at your own expense, and banned from re-entering Thailand.

We strongly recommend you carry a copy of your U.S. passport identification page and current Thai visa to help avoid detention by the Thai immigration police.

Thailand’s entry/exit information is subject to change without notice. For the most current information, please see  The Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau .

You can find detailed information on vaccinations and other health precautions on the  CDC website .

HIV/AIDS Restrictions: Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors to and foreign residents of Thailand. However, these restrictions are generally not enforced. Please verify this information with the Royal Thai Embassy before you travel.

Find information on dual nationality , prevention of international child abduction and customs regulations on our websites.

COVID-19 Requirements: There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Periodic acts of violence in Thailand remain a concern.  In August 2019, several small explosions and related arson events occurred in various locations throughout Bangkok resulting in no deaths but some injuries and minor property damage. Several small-scale bombings occurred near some tourist locations in the far Southern provinces in August 2016 and December 2018. In August 2015, an explosion near the Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok killed at least 20 people and injured more than 100. The U.S. Department of State assesses there is a continued risk of terrorism in Southeast Asia, including in Thailand.

If a protest or demonstration is expected to pass near the U.S. Embassy or Consulate facilities,  Embassy and Consulate entrances and functions may be restricted. The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok’s  website ,  Facebook,  and  Twitter  sites and the U.S. Consulate General in Chiang Mai’s  website ,  Facebook , and  Twitter  sites post information about local events that may affect Embassy functions. Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive security and safety messages.

Far Southern Thailand:  Periodic violence directed mostly at Thai government interests by a domestic insurgency continues to affect security in the southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla. U.S. citizens are at risk of death or injury due to the possibility of indiscriminate attacks in public places. Martial law is in force in this region.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these provinces. Travel to this region by U.S government employees must be reviewed and approved in advance. For more information on terrorist threats against U.S. citizens worldwide and steps to take as a result of these threats, please see the  Worldwide Caution .

  • Crimes of opportunity,  such as pick-pocketing, bag-snatching, and burglary, occur in Thailand.
  • Violent crimes  against foreigners are relatively rare. However, murders, rapes, and assaults against foreigners do occur.
  • Sexually motivated violence,  committed by either Thai citizens or foreigners, is most likely to occur after time spent at bars, clubs, and parties, on beaches, or in remote/isolated areas. The Thai police response will differ from an investigation in the United States; investigating officials have publicly discredited people who have reported being the victim of crimes . In addition to making a report at the police jurisdiction in which the crime occurred, we advise contacting the Embassy and engaging a local attorney if you are a victim of an assault.
  • When traveling alone,  exercise caution, stay near other travelers, and ensure friends or family know how to contact you.
  • Taxi and “tuk-tuk”  drivers may attempt to charge excessive fares or refuse passengers. You should either request the driver use the meter or agree on the fare beforehand.
  • At the airport  use only public transportation from the airport’s official pick-up area, cars from the limousine counters, or a car from your hotel.
  • Rental scams  do occur in Thailand. Many rental motorbike, jet ski, and car companies will hold your passport until you pay for real or fictitious damages. We advise against using your passport as collateral.
  • Exorbitant bar tab scams  occur in Thailand. Some bars and entertainment venues will charge exorbitant prices for drinks or unadvertised cover charges and threaten violence if you don’t pay.
  • Other scams  involving gems, city tours, entertainment venues, and credit cards are common, especially in tourist areas.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Thailand. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Grandparent/Relative targeting
  • Free Trip/Luggage
  • Work permits/job offers

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of crime are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for assistance. Report crimes to the local police by calling 191 or the Tourist Police at 1155 and contact the U.S. Embassy at +66 (0) 2-205-4049 or Consulate at +(66) (53) 107-777. Remember that only local officials have the authority to investigate and to prosecute a crime.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the U.S.

  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms

  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on  insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Conditions at the Bangkok Immigration Detention Center (IDC):  Conditions in immigration detention centers (IDCs) where authorities detain foreign nationals who violate immigration laws remain poor and most are overcrowded. IDCs, administered by the Immigration Police Bureau, which reports to the Royal Thai Police (RTP), are not subject to many of the regulations that govern the regular prison system. U.S. citizen detainees often complain of stark, austere living conditions, overcrowding, and unhealthy conditions. Personal security is poor. In addition, the main IDC in Bangkok does not dependably provide adequate medical or mental health care. In 2019, two U.S. citizens died while in custody at the Bangkok IDC. Deportations are self-funded and it may take up to two weeks for Thai authorities to process a case before deportation. Detainees must have funds to purchase a phone card and do not have access to the internet. Prior approval and a security escort are required to visit a Western Union or an ATM machine.

  • Please see the  Immigration Act B.E. 1979  for more information about Thai Immigration violations.
  • Please see the  Department of State’s Report on Human Rights Practices for Thailand  for further information.

Lèse majesté (Royal Insult):  Thais hold the monarchy in the highest regard. Making a critical or defamatory comment about the royal family is punishable by a prison sentence of up to 15 years per offense. As an example, purposely tearing Thai bank notes, which carry an image of the King, may be considered a lèse majesté offense.

  • Prostitution is illegal in Thailand.  Serious consequences include criminal conviction and imprisonment, particularly in the case of child prostitution.
  • Commercial surrogacy is banned.
  • Personal use of even non-lethal military equipment, such as protective vests and night vision scopes, is prohibited.
  • Illegal drugs  carry severe penalties. Expect long jail sentences under harsh conditions, heavy fines, or even execution for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs.
  • Shoplifting  can result in large fines and lengthy detention followed by deportation.
  • Domestic Issues:  Local police are reluctant to become involved in domestic issues. You may call the Family Services Emergency hotline by dialing 1300 from any Thai phone.
  • Possessing counterfeit or pirated goods is a crime in Thailand.  For more information see the  intellectual property section of the U.S. Department of Justice website .

Customs  may enforce strict regulations on Buddha images, firearms, bullets and/or bullet casings, bullet-proof vests, night vision devices and other para-military type equipment, explosives, drugs, radios, books, and recordings, which might be cultural property and/or considered harmful to the public interest.

LGBTI Travelers: There are no known legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Thailand. However, LGBTI groups report that in the case of sexual crimes, police tend to downplay sexual abuse claims from LGBTI victims.

See our LGBTI Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance. Sidewalks and street crossings are not suitable for travelers with mobility issues. Newly constructed buildings, facilities, and transportation equipment should be accessible by law for persons with mobility issues. However, enforcement of these provisions is not uniform.

Students: See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: Some victims of sexual assault or domestic violence find that Thai authorities do not handle such cases with as much sensitivity or consideration for privacy as they would expect in the United States. See our travel tips for Women Travelers .

Ambulance services are:

  • not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except for Bangkok and other major cities.
  • Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

Medical treatment  is generally adequate in Thailand’s urban areas. In Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya, good facilities exist for routine, long-term, and emergency health care. Basic medical care is available in rural areas, but English-speaking providers are rare.

Medical tourism  is an established and rapidly growing industry. You should consult with your local physician before traveling and also  refer to information on medical tourism from CDC.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Medicine for personal use  is allowed as long as the amount does not exceed a 30-day supply and you bring the medicine with you. Do not mail medicine to Thailand without first confirming it will be allowed into the country.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with  Thailand Customs  and the  Thailand Food and Drug Administration  to ensure the medication is legal in Thailand. Always, carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

The following diseases are present:

  • Chikungunya
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Tuberculosis:
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Melioidosis

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Air Quality:  The air quality in Thailand varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons, but seasonal smog is a problem. In recent years the air quality in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Lampang, Nan, and Samut Sakhon have exceeded Thai and U.S. government daily standards for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) for a portion of the year. In Chiang Mai and other northern provinces, annual agricultural burning, approximately February through late April, and forest fires cause days with unhealthy to hazardous air quality based on the U.S. index. In Bangkok environs, airborne dust and auto pollutants are prevalent in the cooler, dry period (December-February). Anyone who travels where pollution levels are high is at risk. People at the greatest risk from air pollution exposure include:

  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema;
  • People with heart disease
  • People who work or are active outdoors

For Bangkok and Chiang Mai, U.S. Mission Thailand is reporting the U.S. EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI) calculated from PM2.5 data captured by monitors owned and maintained by the Royal Thai Government. The information and advice on health protection measures to take is available

Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

  • Adequate health facilities are available in Bangkok and other major cities but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is not always available.
  • Medical staff at public hospitals may speak little or no English.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery:

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information on Medical Tourism.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in Thailand.
  • Although Thailand has many elective/cosmetic surgery facilities that are on par with those found in the United States, the quality of care varies widely. If you plan to undergo surgery in Thailand, make sure that emergency medical facilities are available and professionals are accredited and qualified.

Pharmaceuticals:

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy:

  • If you are considering traveling to Thailand to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is illegal for foreigners in Thailand, subject to complex local regulation. For additional information, visit the Government of Thailand’s website for information on foreigner surrogacy.
  • If you decide to pursue parenthood in Thailand via assisted reproductive technology (ART) with a gestational mother, be prepared for long and unexpected delays in documenting your child’s citizenship. Be aware that individuals who attempt to circumvent local law risk criminal prosecution.

Water Quality:

  • In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Adventure Travel:

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .

COVID-19 Testing: For the most current list of COVID-19 testing locations in Thailand approved by the Ministry of Public Health, please visit:  http://service.dmsc.moph.go.th/labscovid19 .  Testing is paid for by U.S. citizens.

The Ministry of Public Health provides a list of 44 laboratories approved to conduct COVID-19 testing found  here .

Please Note : Same-day Covid-19 testing is available at most private hospitals throughout Thailand.  Please reference this list of testing locations and contact the provider directly to inquire about COVID-19 testing options, scheduling, cost, and other information.

COVID-19 Vaccines:  The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Thailand.   According to Thai authorities, both private and public hospitals are providing COVID-19 vaccines. More information on a list of hospitals in Thailand is available  here .

The Bang Rak Vaccination and Health Center, the Institute of Dermatology, and the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute are currently providing free bivalent vaccines to non-Thai citizens on a walk-in basis.

Visit the FDA's website to  learn more about FDA-approved vaccines  in the United States.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

  • Traffic accidents are common in Thailand.  According to the  World Health Organization , in 2018, Thailand had one of the world’s highest traffic-related fatality rates. Bangkok and some parts of Chiang Mai have heavy traffic.
  • Reckless driving:  Speeding, reckless passing, and failure to obey other traffic laws are common in all regions of Thailand. Traffic moves on the left. Some drivers move illegally against the traffic. Scooters and motorbikes commonly drive on the sidewalks during rush hour and other periods of heavy traffic. Commercial drivers commonly consume alcohol, amphetamines, and other stimulants.
  • Accidents involving motorcycles can be deadly . Riders may incur serious injuries when they are not wearing helmets or proper clothing and footwear. According to the World Health Organization, in 2016, 74 percent of traffic fatalities involved riders of 2-and 3-wheeled vehicles. Use of motorcycle helmets is mandatory, but this law is sporadically enforced.
  • Use a pedestrian bridge  to cross the road where one is available, including in front of the U.S. Embassy on Wireless Road and on Sukhumvit Road, where many pedestrians have been killed and several U.S. citizens seriously injured. Look carefully in both directions before crossing streets, even when using a marked crosswalk.
  • If you have a traffic accident,  you should contact your insurance company for guidance in dealing with the other party and the police.
  • Emergency vehicles:  Congested roads and a scarcity of ambulances can make it difficult for accident victims to receive timely medical attention

Traffic Laws:

  • Driving under influence is punishable by law . If you are found to be intoxicated, you could be jailed for a minimum of two years and subject to a fine.
  • Bribes are illegal.  If you are found guilty, you could be imprisoned up to five years, face severe fines, or both.
  • Lack of ID.
  • Not obeying traffic laws and traffic signals.
  • Driving slowly in regular lanes of traffic.
  • If you are involved in a traffic accident, you should contact your auto insurance company for guidance .

Public Transportation:

  • Mass transit:  In Bangkok, the BTS elevated "Skytrain," “Airport Rail Link” mass transit, and the underground MRT systems are reliable, inexpensive, air conditioned, and often faster than Bangkok traffic.
  • Bus system:  Bangkok also has an extensive bus system, but buses can be overcrowded and are often driven with little or no regard for passenger safety.
  • For hire vehicles:  Cities outside of Bangkok typically have only rudimentary public transportation and usually do not have metered taxis. In many cases, motorcycle taxis, tuk-tuks, bicycle-powered rickshaws, and pick-up trucks will be the only options available for travelers without their own transport.
  • Smartphone-based for-hire vehicle service  exist in Bangkok and other large cities. Those affiliated with registered taxis, such as Grab Taxi, Line Taxi, and All Thai Taxi are legal, but their affiliated car services are under legal review.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority as not being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Thailand’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Thailand should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

Frequently asked questions

  • Firstly, and most importantly, put in your passport, official ID, bank cards and vital medications. Next, you’ll need some in-flight entertainment to help pass the time. A thrilling book and a tablet crammed with your favorite movies are always good options. If you hope to catch forty winks, a quality neck pillow and some noise-canceling headphones will also come in handy. Finally, leave some space for a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes to ensure you hop off the plane looking and feeling fresh.
  • Make sure you don’t have sharp or pointed objects lurking in one of the compartments of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include explosive or flammable substances, such as aerosol cans and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
  • The goal here is to be as comfortable as you can. Don layers of breathable clothing and don’t forget to pack a jacket in case it gets cool. Pick a pair of roomy, flat shoes as it’s possible that your feet and ankles will swell during the journey. Leave the high heels and heavy boots in your main luggage.
  • A serious condition by the name of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is a risk on long-haul flights. It’s the result of blood clotting due to poor circulation and inactivity. Walking around the cabin and doing regular foot and leg exercises in your seat is a great way to prevent this from happening. Wearing a pair of compression socks also helps reduce the risk.
  • Airport security personnel first need to check that you have a valid passport and travel documents before you can proceed any further. Keep them within easy reach.
  • Your belt, coat, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
  • Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go on a tray to be scanned. No need to worry though, you’ll be back online in no time.
  • Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hairspray, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
  • There’s a good chance you’ll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a smart idea.
  • Airlines won’t allow any sharp items or pocket knives in the cabin. If you must bring these kinds of items, check them in.

COVID-19: travel health notice for all travellers

Thailand travel advice

Latest updates: Health – Travel health notice for mpox removed.

Last updated: April 16, 2024 10:39 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, thailand - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand due to ongoing political tensions and sporadic demonstrations in Bangkok and elsewhere in the country.

Southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala - Avoid all travel

Southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala

Separatist insurgents periodically perpetrate criminally and politically motivated attacks in the southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala.

These deadly attacks include shootings, bombings and arson, and are usually directed at military, government and security buildings and personnel. They have also occurred in a variety of public places.

Martial law and heavily enhanced security measures are in place in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, and Sadao District in Songkhla.

Increased enforcement powers allow authorities to:

  • detain suspects without charge
  • conduct searches
  • seize objects or documents
  • impose curfews

You risk becoming a collateral victim of an attack if you travel in these provinces.

Myanmar border areas in the provinces of Mae Hong Son and Tak

Exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to the Thailand–Myanmar border areas in the provinces of Mae Hong Son and Tak.

Occasional violence, banditry and clashes between government forces and drug traffickers occur.

Border crossing points may be closed without notice. Cross at designated border crossing points only, with the required travel documentation.

Preah Vihear Temple area and surrounding border region

Thailand and Cambodia have an ongoing border dispute in the region. There are reports of landmines in the Preah Vihear temple area.

Exercise a high degree of caution if you are travelling to any other Thai–Cambodian border areas.

Political tensions

Political instability in Thailand has created a volatile and unpredictable security environment throughout the country, particularly in Bangkok.

Legal provisions may allow the military to retain and exercise sweeping powers that could include the right to:

  • prevent public gatherings
  • censor media
  • set up checkpoints
  • restrict movement
  • search for weapons
  • exercise force in response to violence

Such measures could be enforced at any time. Some television, radio stations and web sites may be unavailable, and access to social media services may be intermittently suspended.

Petty crime, such as purse snatching, pickpocketing and theft, is common. Thieves sometimes use razors to cut purses and bags open to remove their contents.

  • Don’t leave bags unattended
  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and travel documents, are secure at all times, especially in tourist areas, crowded markets and bus or train stations
  • Avoid walking in dark alleys or isolated areas

Thefts occur on cross-country buses and vans. Personal belongings, including passports, have been stolen from luggage compartments under buses, especially on long-distance journeys. Use only reputable transportation companies.

Break-ins occur at budget guesthouses, sometimes while guests are asleep in their rooms.

Be careful at night in entertainment areas throughout the country, including in Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao, particularly during full moon parties, Songkran, and other events in popular tourist locations. Robberies and assaults (including sexual assaults) can occur during these events. Passport thefts and losses are common.

Violent crime against foreigners occurs occasionally.

You should report all criminal incidents to the Thai police in the jurisdiction where the incident occurred before leaving Thailand.

Many Canadians fall victim to a variety of scams while visiting Thailand. You should report all incidents to the tourist police.

Credit card and ATM fraud

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:

  • pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
  • use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Rental scams

Rental companies have at times accused renters of causing damage upon return of the equipment. In some cases, renters who refused to pay were harassed and threatened, and their passports (left as collateral) were withheld. Some companies have also stolen the motorcycle and then claimed compensation from the renter.

Before renting a motorcycle or personal watercraft, read all rental contracts thoroughly to ensure that the vehicle is insured to cover damage and theft. Take photos of existing damage on rented vehicles as proof of pre-existing damage.

You must never use your Canadian passport as collateral for rental. If your passport is inaccessible or stolen because of such a situation, you may be subject to investigation by Passport Canada and may receive limited passport services.

Only rent from reputable companies.

Entertainment venues

Some bars, nightclubs and entertainment venues may try to charge exorbitant prices. Discussions about overcharging may lead to threats of violence.

  • Confirm the prices before consumption
  • Avoid running a tab
  • Avoid leaving your credit card with bar or restaurant staff

Travel agencies

When dealing with travel agencies, ensure that the company is a reputable tour organization before providing payment.

Investment fraud

If you plan on buying property or making other investments in Thailand seek legal advice in Canada and Thailand. Do so before making commitments. Related disputes could take time and be costly to resolve.

Gems and jewellery purchases

In scams involving gems and jewellery, merchants sell lower-quality items at inflated prices with promises that the items can be resold at a profit. The guarantees that merchants offer are not always honoured.

Carefully consider all purchases if you are not knowledgeable about gems and jewellery. The Government of Canada cannot assist in obtaining refunds for purchases made.

Overseas fraud

Spiked food and drinks

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect that you have been drugged.

Women’s safety

Sexual assaults against foreign women have occurred. Be particularly vigilant during full moon parties, Songkran, and other events in popular tourist locations.

If you are victim of a sexual assault, you should seek medical attention and report the situation immediately to local authorities and the nearest Canadian office.

Advice for women travellers

There is a threat of terrorism in Thailand. Although infrequent outside of the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala, small-scale bomb attacks have occurred in public places. Further attacks are possible.

Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Demonstrations

Large demonstrations are taking place regularly in Bangkok and across the country. There are social tensions, and demonstrations are likely to continue.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also disrupt traffic and public transportation when they block major roads and intersections and may cause the closure of mass transit stations.

Maintain a high level of personal security awareness at all times.

Demonstration sites in Bangkok include:

  • the areas around the Victory Monument
  • Thammasat University
  • the Bangkok Arts and Cultural Centre
  • the Democracy Monument
  • Ratchaprasong intersection

Other areas of the city may also be affected by protests and associated movements. Demonstrations have also taken place in other cities.

  • Avoid military installations and concentrations of security personnel
  • Expect a heightened security presence in several areas
  • Carry identification documents at all time
  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Water activities

Deaths have occurred due to contact with poisonous jellyfish off Koh Lanta, Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Phi Phi, Krabi and Phuket.

Riptides in coastal areas can be strong, including in the popular destinations of Cha-am/Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Pattaya, Phuket and Rayong. There have been several deaths due to drowning.

Diving schools and rescue services may not adhere to international standards.

  • Rent water sports equipment only from operators affiliated with major international training organizations
  • Exercise extreme caution when swimming or practising water activities
  • Heed flag warnings and don’t swim when a red flag is displayed
  • If stung by a jellyfish, seek immediate medical assistance

Water safety abroad

Adventure tourism

If you undertake adventure sports, such as zip-lining, rock climbing, speleology, elephant trekking or parasailing, choose a well-established and reputable company that has insurance.

Tour operators may not adhere to international standards. If you have any doubt concerning the safety of the installation or equipment, don’t use them. Ensure that your travel insurance covers the recreational activities you choose.

If engaging in adventure tourism:

  • never do so alone
  • always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • don’t venture off marked trails
  • ensure that you’re properly equipped
  • ensure that you’re well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary
  • obtain detailed information on each activity before setting out

Chemical pesticide poisoning

There have been cases of poisoning linked to the use of chemical pesticides, including phosphine. Seek immediate medical assistance if you believe that you have been exposed to a chemical pesticide and are experiencing unusual symptoms.

Seek information on whether or not chemical pesticides are used in your accommodations.

Road safety

Accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians are extremely frequent in Thailand.

Hazardous road conditions, adverse weather conditions, local disregard for traffic laws and drunk driving result in frequent accidents.

Some vehicles may drive against the flow of traffic and on the sidewalks, particularly motorcycles.

Drunk driving and accidents are much more frequent around the western New Year (January 1) and Thai New Year (Songkran, mid-April). Be particularly vigilant when driving during these holiday periods.

Slow-moving trucks limit speed and visibility. Avoid driving on mountain roads at night, especially during the rainy season (June to October). Paved roads connect major cities, but most have only two lanes. Some roads can become impassable, particularly during the rainy season.

Pedestrians and cyclists should be particularly careful. You should always use elevated walkways/pedestrian bridges whenever possible, especially in Bangkok.

Motorcycles

Motorcycle accidents are common and are responsible for the majority of road deaths. Rental scooters and motorcycles are often poorly maintained, making them unsafe to their riders and others on the road.

Helmets are mandatory for motorcycle riders (including passengers), but many helmets don’t meet international safety standards.

Insurance claims could be denied if you were driving without a motorcycle licence.

Avoid driving or riding motorcycles in Thailand, even if you are an experienced motorcyclist

Public transportation

Use licensed taxis from official taxi stands, limousine services or a trusted ride-sharing app.

If arriving by air, arrange to be picked up by hotel shuttle services, use a trusted ride-sharing app, the airport rail-link service or official airport buses.

Unlicensed vehicles (bearing black and white licence plates) are not correctly insured to carry passengers and may not use meters. Many taxis may not be equipped with backseat seatbelts.

Don’t share a taxi with strangers.

Disputes with taxis operators, tuk-tuks (motorized rickshaws), etc., occur and have occasionally resulted in violence or intimidation. Should a dispute occur and you feel threatened, seek local police's assistance to settle the matter.

Marine transportation

Passenger boats accidents have occurred due to overloading and poor maintenance of some vessels. Vessels often lack adequate safety equipment.

Don’t board vessels that appear overloaded or unseaworthy.

In the past, rail lines in the far south have been the targets of sabotage and armed attacks.

Train accidents in recent years have caused injuries and deaths.

Pirate attacks and armed robbery against ships occur in coastal waters. Mariners should take appropriate precautions.

Information about foreign domestic airlines

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

We have obtained the information on this page from the Thai authorities. It can, however, change at any time.

Verify this information with the  Foreign Representatives in Canada .

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you use for travel.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country’s entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid at least 6 months upon entry into Thailand.

Passport for official travel

Different entry rules may apply.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Tourist visa: not required for stays of up to 30 days  Business visa: required  Student visa: required  Working visa: required

If you’re travelling to Thailand for tourism with a regular Canadian passport, you can obtain a 30-day visa upon arrival.

If you obtain a multiple-entry tourist visa, you can stay for up to 60 days. The visa is valid for 6 months and must be obtained before travelling.

If you wish to stay longer than 60 days or work or study in Thailand, you must obtain the appropriate visa from a Thai embassy or consulate. Local authorities are actively monitoring and enforcing compliance with visa regulations.

Those applying for non-immigrant visas of category "O-A" need to show proof of a valid health insurance meeting specific criteria.

Guidelines Non-Immigrant Visa (O-A) - Thai General Insurance Association

Other entry requirements

Thai Border officials may ask you to show them a return or onward ticket and proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself for the duration of your stay.

If you are unable to do so, you may be denied entry.

Entry stamp

You must get an entry stamp from an immigration officer at the point of entry into Thailand. Don’t get your visa, visa extension or entry stamp from visa shops or travel agents in Thailand.

A passport that has been altered or that contains counterfeit visas, and entry/exit stamps is deemed invalid. Offenders can expect jail sentences, fines and deportation, and may also be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.

Length of stay

The date indicated on your Thai entry stamp determines how long you may stay in the country, even if your visa shows a different date.

All foreigners staying in Thailand longer than 3 months must notify Thailand’s immigration bureau of their residence every 90 days.

The Royal Thai Police perform random visa checks and strict penalties are enforced for overstaying. Canadians overstaying their visa have been arrested and detained until deportation. Deportation procedures are at the foreigner’s own expense and can be lengthy. Detention conditions in immigration detention centres are poor.

If you overstay, regardless of whether you leave Thailand voluntarily or are deported, you may be banned from re-entering Thailand for 1 to 10 years.

Dual citizenship

If you are a dual citizen, you must enter and exit Thailand with the same nationality passport.

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Malaria  is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   There is a risk of malaria in certain areas and/or during a certain time of year in this destination.

Antimalarial medication may be recommended depending on your itinerary and the time of year you are travelling. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows. • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.    If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

In this destination, rabies is carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. Rabies treatment is often available in this destination.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Cholera is a risk in parts of this country. Most travellers are at very low risk.

To protect against cholera, all travellers should practise safe food and water precautions .

Travellers at higher risk of getting cholera include those:

  • visiting, working or living in areas with limited access to safe food, water and proper sanitation
  • visiting areas where outbreaks are occurring

Vaccination may be recommended for high-risk travellers, and should be discussed with a health care professional.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Zika virus is a risk in this country.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Human cases of avian influenza have been reported in this destination. Avian influenza   is a viral infection that can spread quickly and easily among birds and in rare cases it can infect mammals, including people. The risk is low for most travellers.

Avoid contact with birds, including wild, farm, and backyard birds (alive or dead) and surfaces that may have bird droppings on them. Ensure all poultry dishes, including eggs and wild game, are properly cooked.

Travellers with a higher risk of exposure include those:

  • visiting live bird/animal markets or poultry farms
  • working with poultry (such as chickens, turkeys, domestic ducks)
  • hunting, de-feathering, field dressing and butchering wild birds and wild mammals
  • working with wild birds for activities such as research, conservation, or rehabilitation
  • working with wild mammals, especially those that eat wild birds (e.g., foxes)

All eligible people are encouraged to get the seasonal influenza shot, which will protect them against human influenza viruses. While the seasonal influenza shot does not prevent infection with avian influenza, it can reduce the chance of getting sick with human and avian influenza viruses at the same time.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)   is a virus that attacks and impairs the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

High risk activities include anything which puts you in contact with blood or body fluids, such as unprotected sex and exposure to unsterilized needles for medications or other substances (for example, steroids and drugs), tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture.

Medical services and facilities

Excellent healthcare is available in major cities, particularly in private hospitals and clinics. Quality of care varies significantly in rural areas.

Establishments may require confirmation of health insurance coverage, a guarantee of payment or an upfront deposit before admitting patients.

Psychiatric or psychological facilities and services in Thailand may not meet international standards. Canadians with mental illness have been committed to state facilities, detained and deported.

Medical evacuation can be very expensive and you may need it in case of serious illness or injury.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Commercial surrogacy

Commercial surrogacy is illegal in Thailand.

If you’re planning to visit Thailand for the purpose of commissioning surrogacy arrangements, you should consider the potential challenges involved in pursuing international surrogacy and seek specialist legal advice on Thai and Canadian laws prior to making any arrangements.

It is also recommended that you consult with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on current policies regarding citizenship through descent and the issuance of Canadian travel documents.

Dual citizenship is not legally recognized in Thailand.

If local authorities consider you a citizen of Thailand, they may refuse to grant you access to Canadian consular services. This will prevent us from providing you with those services.

Travellers with dual citizenship

Compulsory military service

Male Thai citizens are subject to compulsory military service when they reach the age of 21. If you’re a dual Canadian–Thai citizen, you may be subject to this requirement.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Thailand.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Thailand by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Thailand to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

There are multiple factors that influence the price of a flight so comparing airlines, departure airports and times can help keep costs down.

Peak Season

The weather does vary around Thailand but generally the dry, cool climate months of November through February are the best time to visit when both temperatures and humidity are lower and the seas are at their clearest for diving and snorkeling. This also coincides with the peak tourist season, particularly over the Christmas/New Year period, when many foreigners visit to escape the cold back home and flock to Thailand’s array of beautiful beaches where various water based activities await. By March and April things have started to heat up considerably and the mountainous north gets busy with locals escaping the soaring temperatures in Bangkok, which can be quite unbearable. You may want to avoid traveling to certain parts of Thailand from March to May. However, with the skies still relatively dry, this is a good time to visit the southern beaches if you want to escape the heavy crowds of foreign tourists (though you may see a lot of Thai’s vacationing here to escape the stifling temps in cities like Bangkok, etc.).

Phuket , Thailand’s largest island, is a popular reason why travelers book flight tickets to Thailand. It has a wide range of hotels that cater to every beach goers budget, from bungalows to luxury resorts. These fill up during Phuket’s peak season (November to April, when its drier) so plan and book your flight tickets and accommodations well in advance to avoid disappointment. On the opposite coast, Ko Samui offers scuba diving, parasailing, forest and hill treks, as well as a lively nightlife. January to April is the best time to visit weather-wise, and the island is particularly busy around Christmas, and July and August see a surge as well. Ko Pha Ngan just to the north is famous for its full-moon beach party and is most crowded from December to March, as well as August.

The “wet” season months of May through October caused by the southwest monsoon see frequent downpours and high temperatures that keep many visitors away.

September and October tend to be the wettest months, with some roads becoming impassable, particularly in the mountainous regions of the north. The rain comes and goes however, meaning you will still get some clear, sunny patches, and if you want to avoid the majority of tourists and get the best flight deals, this is a great alternative period to travel, if you don’t mind the wet weather.

Temperature and rainfall in Thailand by month

Plan your trip to thailand by taking into account the average temperature and rainfall totals by month..

If weather is an important factor for your trip to Thailand, use this chart to help with planning. For those seeking warmer temperatures, April is the ideal time of year to visit, when temperatures reach an average of 86.0 F. When you book airline tickets to Thailand – officially the Kingdom of Thailand – expect modern day Eden. Thanks in part to the breathtaking ocean views and waterfall landscapes shown in the movie The Beach, the country witnessed a wave of tourism as more travelers booked flights to Thailand in an effort to find paradise in Southeast Asia. The beaches are as stunning as promised: predominantly white sand, an abundance of palm trees, coral reefs, fish and sparklingly clear turquoise waters. However, you’ll find there is more to see than just the wonderful beaches. Flowing with natural beauty, ancient temples, a bustling nightlife and royal palaces, Thailand is quite possibly the land where dreams come true.

The country is made up of natural regions including the mountainous and forested north; the rice fields of the central plains; the farmlands of the northeast; and of course, perhaps most famously, the tropical islands and long shorelines of the south. Within each of these regions, there is much to explore. Book a cheap flight to Thailand and get your thrills in bustling Bangkok (located in the central plains region), the capital and most popular city that mixes the past and present, where ancient palaces and temples reside alongside modern skyscrapers. Along with the notorious red light district, other famous attractions in Bangkok include a number of beautiful Wats (temples), the amazing street markets where everything under the sun can be purchased at reduced prices, trips by boat along the Chao Praya River, and gigantic city parks such as Lumpini. Chiang Mai epitomizes the appeal of northern Thailand. Set among lush rainforest and mountains, the city dates from the 13th century. Shopping and sightseeing are popular activities (there are more than 300 churches) but the town is also the perfect base from which to explore the mountainous northern region. Or, you want to take a journey to one of the many diverse small towns and villages scattered across the vast country.

Perhaps the country’s greatest wealth, however, is its people. Thailand is made up of Thai, Chinese, Malay and minority groups including Mons, Khmers and hill tribes, all who co-exist side by side. They are known for their love of family and their hospitality, and are friendly and gracious to travelers. They also stage some mesmerizing festivals including the “Bun Bang Fai” Rocket Festival; the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival and International Candle Carving Competition which marks the start of Buddhist Lent; and the Illuminated Boat Procession.

A ride through the countryside offers breathtaking views while tropical beaches serve as a resting spot for five-star resort travelers. Take comfort in a beachfront bungalow or motorbike through the mountains – as soon as you step off your flight to Thailand you’ll find the options are endless. There are villages, towns, resorts and accommodations to suit every type of traveler, be it with a laid-back backpacker-vibe and plenty of cheap diving to high-end, pristine spa resorts set on private coves. If you are planning on taking a trip to Southeast Asia’s premiere destination, here are some tips to help you plan and enjoy the smoothest possible trip to Thailand.

How to get around Thailand

There are multiple international airports in Thailand , including Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) (also referred to as Bangkok International Airport) and Phuket International Airport (HKT) . Here are a few tips for getting to where you need to go from each of these two airports.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport:

Prior to 2006, Don Mueang International Airport was the sole international arrival point for the Bangkok area. In 2006, Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, also known as Bangkok International Airport, opened and has since displaced it in this regard (and has inherited its airport code, BKK, which belonged to Don Mueang prior to Suvarnabhumi commencing international flights), while Don Mueang International Airport has become a low cost carrier and domestic hub. The new airport is located about 20 miles away from the city center of Bangkok, while Don Mueang is around 19 miles away.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport is divided into two international terminals and a domestic terminal, all linked by a free shuttle bus service. Airport buses link Bangkok’s airport with the city center along multiple different routes that stop at a number of major hotels and landmarks. They depart from just outside the Terminal 1 arrivals hall and take around fifty-sixty minutes. If there is a group of you, there are shuttle buses which run certain fixed routes as well. Bangkok Airport’s Rail Link offers two lines into the city with travel times starting at around fifteen-twenty minutes on the Express Line to Makkasan station. This is the quickest and most convenient mode of ground transportation into the city, though you may still need to do some additional traveling depending on where you are going in Bangkok exactly. Taxi is the most expensive route into the city, but will drop you directly at your hotel door. There are either metered or unmetered taxis available, but if you opt for the unmetered service, be sure to negotiate your fare before departing the airport. The drivers are notorious at overcharging so make sure you agree on a price before you get in. The journey should take around twenty-forty minutes, depending on your destination. Lastly, if you are brave, you could always rent a car.

Phuket International Airport:

If you are flying into Phuket International Airport in the south of Thailand, there is an hourly airport bus into Phuket Town (thirty minutes) that departs from 6:30 AM to 9:30 PM. This is the cheapest option (and probably the easiest) and tickets can be bought from a counter on the ground floor. If you are heading to Patong (forty minutes), Kata or Karon Beach (one hour), there are also minivans that will drop you directly at your hotel and tickets can also be bought from counters inside. The fastest but more expensive way from the airport is by metered taxi which depart from a stand outside the main airport terminal, but you may need to ask the driver to turn the meter on to avoid being charged an inflated price. If there are a couple of you traveling you can split the fare and make it more worthwhile. If you are a confident driver, then you can rent a car from the airport. This is a great choice if you plan to drive around different parts of Thailand but if you’re just going to go to your hotel then it might be more of an inconvenience.

After you’ve gotten to where you need to go, Thailand’s trains are comfortable, frequent, and on time; although a bit slow, it’s a great way to see the country. Thailand’s buses are very fast (don’t watch the road), well serviced, and air conditioned. If you’re pressed for time, catch a flight. Thailand has regional airports, and convenient domestic Thailand flights are easy to find. Transportation in a city or resort is typically a taxi, tuk-tuk, rickshaw, pickup, or hired car and driver. Taxis are usually metered in a city; make sure the meter is turned on. Always negotiate the fare for a tuk-tuk or rickshaw before you set out. Bangkok’s public transportation can get you around town. Chiang Mai in northern Thailand doesn’t have buses or taxis, but has lots of covered pickups (songtaos) and tuk-tuks. You can hail a songtao and their fares are reasonable. Many travelers rent motorcycles and bikes in Chiang Mai, but make sure to drive defensively. Avoid driving in Thailand yourself if you can, both cars and motorbikes. Thais drive on the left side of the road, usually at breakneck speeds even around blind corners, and aren’t fussy about driving laws.

No airlines fly nonstop between the United States and Thailand; some of the quickest routes take you through Seoul, Korea or Osaka, Japan. Don’t forget that, if you’re crossing the Pacific Ocean, you’re also crossing the International Date Line, which affects both your departure and arrival times on your outward bound flight as well as on the trip home.

What should you pack for a flight to Thailand?

Thailand lies in the tropics, so you need to pack for warm to hot weather at almost any time of the year, but bring a light jacket because air conditioning can be very strong indoors and even on the bus. A tropical climate means you also need a light rain jacket and umbrella, as well as insect repellent. If you’re headed to the beach (and if going to Thailand, you should be headed to the beach!), don’t forget sunscreen and, of course, your bathing suit. You may also want a sarong to toss on as a cover-up or to provide a little extra coverage in more conservative parts of the country. In Thailand, you can expect to have to take your shoes off frequently when you enter temples, massage parlors, people’s homes, or even restaurants, so pack some slip-on shoes that are easy to take on and off.

What are some things to do in Thailand?

Thailand offers a rich blend of world-class beaches and natural attractions, cultural and religious sites to make your jaw drop, and wild nightlife. Don’t miss the stunning Grand Palace in the heart of Bangkok. Cultural exploration can take you away from the big cities as well; if you have the chance to, visit a floating market by riding in a small boat as you weave between stilt houses and through narrow canals to shop. Buddhist temples abound throughout the country, with some of the most spectacular being the ceramic-covered Wat Arun and the elephant shrine at the 13th century Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. As for that nightlife? Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road is well-known as one of the wildest streets in the world, so sit back at one of the many bars and watch all the action around you, little of which is safe to discuss at work. Nightlife continues away from Bangkok as well, including at Koh Pha Ngan beach, where thousands of revelers show up each full moon ready to party. After a full day of sightseeing, indulge yourself in a decadent Thai massage, which melts your pressure points and leaves you feeling both relaxed and rejuvenated. Thailand’s natural beauty is breathtaking, and nowhere is this truer than at Koh Phi Phi, a beach you may recognize from James Bond movies. The beaches and high-end resorts of Phuket are also among the world’s best; while you’re there, don’t miss the caves and lagoons of Phang Nga Bay. Thailand’s beauty also resonates at Khao Yai National Park, where, when you’re not marveling at waterfalls, you might be spotting bears, elephants and gibbons. Finally, where else in the world can you swim in a river with elephants and ride on their backs? Don’t forget your camera when you head to Mahawangchang Elephant Trekking Camp.

17 things you need to know before visiting Thailand

Thailand is one of the easiest places to travel in Asia, but there are some top tips that first-time visitors should know © Witthaya Prasongsin / Getty Images

Thailand has a deserved reputation as one of the easiest places to travel in Asia. There’s an amazing amount to see , hassles are limited, English-language signs and menus are commonplace, and you can get around easily at almost any time of day or night.

However, there are a few things every traveler should know. Here are our top tips for making the most of your trip.

1. Rainy season varies depending on where you are

The June to October rainy season brings heavy showers and regular storms to northern, central and southwestern Thailand, creating dangerous conditions for travel by sea. The southeast coast and the Gulf of Thailand get soaked slightly later, from October to December.

Rainy-season travel means lower prices and smaller crowds, but some accommodations close and many island ferries stop running, including services to the Tarutao archipelago . If this is when you decide to visit, you'll definitely want to pack some kind of wet weather gear.

2. Check for recommended vaccinations

You’ve probably already been jabbed for COVID-19, but most doctors also recommend vaccination against tetanus and hepatitis A. Also consider a rabies shot – dogs, cats and monkeys can all carry the viral disease. Malaria is present along the borders with Laos , Cambodia , Myanmar and Malaysia . If you visit these regions, use anti-malarial prophylaxis such as atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline.

3. Sensible travelers to Thailand book ahead

If you have your heart set on a particular boat journey, train trip, trek, tour or boutique stay, book ahead for the busy tourist season from November to March or during any religious holiday. During the rainy season, call or email ahead to check if places are open.

4. Follow local etiquette when meeting Thai people

When meeting locals in Thailand, the standard greeting is the wai – a respectful dip of the head with the hands held palms together in front of the chest. Don’t shake hands unless the other person initiates the handshake. If you get invited into a Thai home, remove your shoes before you enter and avoid pointing the soles of your feet towards another person.

5. Be respectful of Buddhism, a part of everyday life in Thailand

Some 95% of Thais are Buddhist, and the national religion weaves through every aspect of life. To show proper respect, remove footwear before entering any Buddhist structure, and wear clothing that covers the shoulders, upper arms and upper legs.

Never point the soles of your feet towards any Buddhist image (or monk), and don’t touch Buddha statues on the head. Give way to monks when walking on footpaths, and don’t sit next to them on public transport. It is also taboo for a woman to touch a monk or their belongings.

6. Dress modestly

Thai women and men usually avoid revealing outfits that show off a lot of skin. Swimsuits are fine for the beach, but away from the sand, throw on a sarong or fisher's pants, plus something that covers the shoulders if you visit religious sites. Topless or nude sunbathing is frowned upon and can attract unwanted attention.

7. Show respect for the king and royal family

The Thais take respect for the monarchy extremely seriously, and lèse-majesté (maligning the royal family) is a criminal offense. Never show disrespect towards the monarch or depictions of the royal family (including on money).

8. Know what to expect at the dining table

When dining out in Thailand, everything tends to arrive on the table at the same time, usually placed in the middle of the table for everyone to share. Thailand abandoned chopsticks in the 19th century. You’ll get a spoon and fork but no knife – but most dishes come as bite-sized morsels, so you won’t need one. Sticky rice is usually bundled up into balls and eaten with the fingers.

9. Vegetarian is a relative term in Thailand

Fish sauce, oyster sauce and egg are widely used as cooking ingredients in Thailand. The safest bet for people who don't eat fish or meat is to seek out Indian-owned vegetarian restaurants, or restaurants serving kin jay Buddhist cuisine. If in doubt, ask the person making the food if it is jay  – the term mang sa wirat just means food that doesn’t contain pieces of meat or fish but doesn't mean it's necessarily suitable for vegetarians.

10. Health risks include stomach bugs, mosquito bites and rabies

The most common trouble travelers face in Thailand is trip-spoiling stomach bugs. Never drink tap water, wash your hands before eating, stick to busy eating establishments and be cautious of ice, unwashed or unpeeled fruit and uncooked vegetables. If you become unwell, seek out private hospitals in larger cities rather than public hospitals.

Mosquito bites can easily become infected in Thailand’s tropical climate. Bring mosquito repellent, and use mosquito nets (or bring your own). Rabies is another risk – always seek medical attention if you are bitten by a dog, cat or monkey.

11. Smart travelers steer clear of drugs in Thailand

In June 2022,  marijuana and hemp were removed from the Category 5 narcotics list in Thailand. However, there are still restrictions and smoking marijuana in public is not recommended.

Crossing borders with Class A drugs carries the death penalty, and even the possession of small quantities can bring a hefty prison sentence – it’s really not worth the risk. Also note that smoking in public can attract heavy fines. If you take any prescription medicines, check that these are allowed into Thailand before you travel.

12. Prices may well be inflated for tourists

In general, Thailand is hassle-free, but tourists are often charged inflated prices for tuk-tuks and unmetered taxi rides – ask a local how much journeys should cost and use that as a yardstick for a fair fare.

Major tourist sites are popular stalking grounds for cab drivers and touts who will try to steer you towards dubious souvenir shops, fake "tourist offices" and second-rate places to stay, where you’ll inevitably pay more to cover their commission. Book transport directly with the operators to avoid dodgy deals from unscrupulous travel agents.

13. You may be approached by sex workers

Thailand’s sex industry may find you whether you want it to or not. Single male travelers (and even couples) can expect to be approached by sex workers or touts drumming up business, so be ready with a firm refusal.

Be aware that some bars, restaurants and karaoke venues are fronts for sex work – warning signs include red or pink strip lights, large numbers of skimpily dressed female staff and lots of foreign male customers.

14. Political protests can be tense and are best avoided

Thailand can have a lot of protests. When tensions flare up between the government and opposition groups, it can lead to blockades, flight cancellations and sometimes violence. Monitor local news sites such as the Nation for information on simmering political troubles, and avoid protests and other potential flash points.

15. Some governments advise against travel in Thailand’s south

The far south of Thailand, along the Malaysian border, has been wracked by a separatist insurgency since the 1940s. Most foreign governments advise against travel to the districts of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla.

16. Be very cautious when riding a scooter

Thousands of travelers rent a scooter or motorcycle in Thailand, but make sure your home driving license covers you for any vehicle you hire, and carry your passport (or a copy of the ID pages) in case the police ask for it.

Wear a helmet, ride cautiously and make sure the rental comes with liability insurance – every year, hundreds of tourists are injured in motorcycle and scooter accidents in Thailand. Always give way to larger vehicles, and watch out for livestock, potholes and other hazards on the road.

17. Follow local advice if there's a natural disaster

Thailand is vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as flooding, landslides and cyclones during the rainy season. Heed official advice in the event of a natural disaster, and contact your embassy for up-to-the-minute information on evacuation procedures.

There might not be an airport lounge but you do get a free allowance of 20 kilograms of checked luggage plus free snacks and drinks. If you are particular about where you sit on a flight, you'll be pleased to know that you can choose your seat up to 90 days ahead of time.

Most importantly, if reliability matters to you, you'll like Thai Smile because it has a good reputation for taking off on time. While it's not a luxury airline, you'll get a comfortable short distance flight experience.

  • Luggage allowance: 20 kilograms

4. AirAsia - Best Low-Cost Airline, Good for Those Traveling Light

AirAsia is one of the cheapest options when flying around Thailand but it's also a great airline. If you're traveling light with just a 7 kilogram carry-on, AirAsia is a good option. With AirAsia, the base price is cheap, especially when booking online. You can sometimes fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for as little as 20 USD. Add-ons may add up if you want an in-flight meal or a particular seat. The airline has varying prices for its seating if you don't choose Premium Flex. The extras can add up but let's talk about the service offered to you.

As well as such reasonable pricing, the airline is very helpful. It has machines you can use to check yourself in at the airports. There is always an attendant there to help you through the process. The machines mean you don't have to wait around for very long. AirAsia almost always takes off on time unless there's something out of its control.

  • Luggage allowance: 15 kilograms is 300 THB
  • Excess luggage fee (per kilogram): 400 THB
  • Meal included: no
  • Seat reservation included: no
  • Credit card fee: 96.5 TBH
  • Departs from: Don Mueang International Airport

5. Nok Air - Best Airline for Traveling with Kids

Nok Air has a bird theme and everything, including the airplanes and the flight attendants, maintains the theme. The airline gives you free snacks, water, and Wi-Fi, and its service is exceptional. The staff members are all smiles and your kids will love their bright yellow uniforms that mimic colorful birds. The airplanes have a beak painted at the front of them, which again is really fascinating for children.

The airline has a lot of options for flying around Thailand. You can fly from Bangkok in the morning, afternoon, or night to the most popular destinations. The upgrades don't cost much more if you want some extra comforts and services for your family. The airline's service is fantastic for the price, which matters when you're flying with a family and paying for multiple seats.

  • Luggage allowance: 15 kilograms
  • Excess luggage fee (per kilogram): 300 THB
  • Meal included: snack box
  • Credit card fee: 90.95 TBH

6. Thai Lion Air - Best for Low Airfares with Perks

Thai Lion Air offers you prices much like those for flying with AirAsia but it gives you more. You can check up to 15 kilograms of luggage for free. If you catch one of its online promotions, you'll pay very little. For example, a Bangkok to Chiang Mai flight can be on sale for 800 TBH.

  • Luggage allowance: 10 kilograms

7. Thai Vietjet Air - Best New Airline, Budget Flight Out of Suvarnabhumi Airport

There's not too much to say about Thai Vietjet Air as it's still quite new, having opened in 2014. The airline doesn't go to many destinations within Thailand. The one thing that could be highlighted is that it's a budget airline flying out of the main airport. If you're flying into or out of Suvarnabhumi Airport on the same day, this airline makes it easy for you.

  • Excess luggage fee (per kg): 400 THB

8. Kan Air - Best and Only Option to Get to Mae Hong Son

Kan Air is a small airline based in Chiang Mai. It services the north and northeast of Thailand as well as Bangkok. However, if you want to get to Mae Hong Son and avoid the curvy roads you'd need to travel on by land, this is the best option. This flight route is in partnership with Bangkok Airways. Kan Air offers you free checked baggage on its flights.

  • Excess luggage fee (per kilogram): 100 THB
  • Online reservation: credit card only
  • Departs from: Chiang Mai International Airport

There was a time recently when Thailand had questionable safety standards. This caused the ICAO to downgrade Thailand's airlines. In turn, this caused airlines like Bangkok Airways to have reduced flights to certain places. However, the airline has worked hard and the ICAO has now said it'll be upgrading the airline back to a Category 1 rating.

AirlineRatings.com is an independent site for gauging the safety of airlines. There are up to seven stars available for safety. The company gave two stars to Nok Air, AirAsia (Thailand) and Bangkok Airways were given three stars, and Thai Airways received four stars. These airlines carry out compulsory safety audits, which continually improve the safety standards.

Leave yourself plenty of time to get to the airport in Bangkok, whether it's Suvarnabhumi Airport or Don Mueang International Airport. The traffic can be horrendous, and queues can be long at the check-in counters.

1. When you're taking AirAsia, it's well worth the extra money to pay for Premium Flex. You get 20 kilograms of free luggage, the best seats are available to you, and meals are included.

2. Take a taxi from one of the taxi stands when you leave the airport. There will likely be people ready to confront you but they'll charge a high flat rate.

3. Take your own items of comfort on the airplane, such as a pillow or blanket. It might be hot in Thailand but the airplanes usually have the air-conditioning on high.

4. On the first floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport, there's a food court with excellent food.

The Best Ways to Get to Thailand Using Points and Miles

Ethan Steinberg

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Thailand is a traveler's paradise, offering ancient history, delicious street food, warm hospitality and bustling city life all rolled into one. From the picturesque islands in the south to Chang Mai in the north, it's an absolute must-see for almost every serious traveler out there.

(Photo by Evan Krause via Unsplash)

Thankfully, Thailand is also one of the most frequent targets of major fare sales. It's not uncommon to see flights from the US to Bangkok (BKK) for as little as $500-$600 round-trip. Still, if you aren't able to catch one of these discounts or you're looking to travel in a premium cabin, today we'll take a look at the best ways to fly to Thailand using points and miles. While there are dozens of airports across the country, including some that let you fly directly into beach getaways like Phuket (HKT) and Koh Samui (USM), this guide will focus primarily on flights to and from the capital city of Bangkok.

Note that Bangkok itself actually has two airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Muang (DMK). BKK is the country's main international gateway, so unless I specifically mention Don Muang you can assume I'm referring to BKK.

Once you arrive in Bangkok, it's relatively easy (and inexpensive) to fly around the rest of the country, as many carriers offer extensive domestic service. You also may be able to snag even lower prices by booking through an airline's Thailand site. For more information on this strategy, check out TPG Travel Analyst Zach Griff's post on the subject .

Airlines That Fly to Thailand

In order to keep this list manageable, I'm only including airlines that make sense for a US-based traveler. This means no European airlines, for example, as most programs won't let you route east to Asia on award tickets. I've also grouped the options by alliance to help you organize your planning.

There are currently no nonstop flights from the US to Thailand, and unless a US carrier decides to start one, there won't be any time soon. That's because the Thai Civil Aviation Authority wasn't able to earn a category 1 safety rating in its latest FAA audit , which is a necessary prerequisite for airlines based in the country from launching flights to the US.

Star Alliance

  • Air China flies from Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (PVG), Chengdu (CTU) and Hangzhou (HGH) to Bangkok
  • Air India flies from Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM) to Bangkok
  • ANA flies from Tokyo-Narita (NRT) and Tokyo-Haneda (HND) to Bangkok
  • Asiana flies from Seoul (ICN) to Bangkok
  • Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa (ADD) to Bangkok
  • EVA Air flies from Taipei (TPE) to Bangkok
  • Singapore Airlines flies from Singapore (SIN) to Bangkok
  • Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul (IST) to Bangkok

Thai flag carrier Thai Airways flies from Bangkok to a number of international destinations in Europe and Asia, which means if you're booking a Star Alliance award ticket you may have the option to connect on Thai for your final leg (or initial leg if booking an award that starts in BKK).

  • Cathay Pacific flies from Hong Kong (HKG) to Bangkok
  • JAL flies from Tokyo-Narita (NRT) and Tokyo-Haneda (HND) to Bangkok
  • Malaysia Airlines flies from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Bangkok
  • Qatar flies from Doha (DOH) to Bangkok
  • Royal Jordanian flies from Amman (AMM) to Bangkok
  • China Airlines flies from Taipei (TPE) to Bangkok
  • China Eastern flies from Shanghai (PVG), Beijing (PEK), Chengdu (CTU), Guangzhou (CAN), Changsha (CSX) and Nanjing (NKG) to Bangkok
  • Garuda Indonesia flies from Jakarta (CGK) to Bangkok
  • Korean Air flies from Seoul (ICN) to Bangkok

Non Alliance Airlines

  • Emirates flies from Dubai (DXB) and Hong Kong (HKG) to Bangkok
  • Etihad flies from Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Bangkok

Mileage Options

Now that we know which airlines fly to Bangkok, the next question is which airline you should book with. The table below shows an overview of the points programs, transfer partners and round-trip award costs for some of the best options on this list:

Best Redemption Choices

1. alaska airlines mileage plan.

While Alaska miles aren't the easiest to earn , they're one of the best ways to book award tickets to Asia, especially if you're looking to travel in a premium cabin. Alaska isn't a member of one of the major alliances, but it's built a valuable loyalty program through partnerships with individual airlines. However, these agreements with individual carriers mean individual award charts for each one. As a result, when you book awards with Alaska, your price will vary depending not only on your destination but also what airline you choose to fly.

Alaska has about a half-dozen partners that you can fly from the US to Asia, but only two are worth mentioning: Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines .

Cathay Pacific can best be described as "too-good-to-be-true," with one-way awards going for 30,000 miles in economy, 50,000 miles in business class or 70,000 miles in first.

air travel to thailand

Cathay Pacific first class is one of the most spacious products on a 777 and a consistently excellent treat any time you get to fly it. Note that you can't book these awards on the Alaska website, so you'll need to search on a different Oneworld tool like British Airways or Qantas and call to book.

air travel to thailand

As an added bonus, you might be lucky enough to snag an A350 for the connection from Hong Kong to Bangkok. While none of the planes operating these short regional flights feature first class, the A350 is the newest plane in Cathay's fleet and features the carrier's top-notch, lie-flat international business class product.

JAL is not a bad option to consider, though it does have a more limited US route network and marginally higher award rates. Still, JAL first class was one of the best meals I've ever had in the air or on the ground, and I'd happily pay 75,000 miles to fly it again.

air travel to thailand

For both Cathay Pacific and JAL, the premium from business class to first class is tiny relative to the difference in the experience, so you should absolutely splurge if you can find the award space. Alaska is incredibly generous and will even let you build in a free stopover in Hong Kong or Tokyo on one-way award tickets, no matter what cabin you're flying in.

However, keep in mind that you can't combine partners on Alaska award tickets. While you can include a connecting Alaska flight within the US to get to your international gateway, you can't have more than one international partner on a singe ticket. For complete details on this and other restrictions, be sure to check out our complete guide to Alaska routing rules .

Earning Alaska Miles

There are many ways to earn Alaska miles for your award ticket to Thailand, including opening the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card, which is currently offering 40,000 miles, plus a Companion Fare from $121 ($99 fare, plus taxes and fees from $22) after you make purchases of $2,000 or more within the first 90 days of opening your account. You could also take advantage of one of the carrier's regular promotions for buying miles. It rarely makes sense to purchase miles without a bonus, but Alaska has offered these bonuses of up to 50% in the past (check out this post for any currently available offers). Finally, you could transfer Marriott Bonvoy points directly to Alaska Mileage Plan, but that should only be used under specific circumstances .

2. ANA Mileage Club

ANA flies a total of five daily non-stop flights between Tokyo's two airports (Narita and Haneda) and Bangkok, which is good news for award travelers, as ANA Mileage Club will give you a significant discount for sticking to ANA-operated flights instead of Star Alliance partners.

You're only allowed to book round-trip awards, but those start at just 65,000 miles in economy or 110,000 miles in business class. ANA even allows a stopover on award tickets, meaning you can spend some time in Tokyo before continuing onto Thailand.

Note that many ANA awards have high fuel surcharges , so you might be better off looking at partner flights that cost more miles but less cash. The partner award chart is still very generous, allowing you to fly round-trip business class from the US to Bangkok for only 136,000 miles. If you pick a partner like EVA Air that has low fuel surcharges, you can get a top notch flight, a cheap redemption, and save your hard earned dollars to spend on vacation.

air travel to thailand

Again though, ANA only allows you to book round-trip award tickets, so if you're hoping to snag a one-way flight on ANA, your best bet is to utilize another Star Alliance program.

Earning ANA Miles

Unfortunately, ANA Mileage Club only partners with American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy when it comes to transferable rewards. This allows you to transfer points earned on cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express or the Marriott Bonvoy™ Brilliant American Express® Card directly to ANA.

3. Avianca LifeMiles

ANA's low rates and free stopovers are hard to beat, but Avianca LifeMiles offers much more flexibility for Star Alliance travelers. You're allowed to book one-way awards on your choice of Star Alliance partner airline (ANA, Asiana, EVA, Thai and United, to name a few) at the following rates:

  • Economy: 39,000 miles
  • Business: 78,000 miles
  • First: 99,000 miles

If you choose to fly in a premium cabin, you might have to connect to Thailand in a lower class of service (since most airlines don't fly first class cabins on shorter regional flights). This is another great benefit of booking your award ticket through Avianca, as the LifeMiles program discounts these "mixed-cabin" awards based on the class of your connection . Unfortunately, the LifeMiles website is still not 100% reliable at showing partner award availability and Avianca's customer service leaves something to be desired.

The ability to book two one-way awards instead of a single round-trip may seem small, but it adds a ton of flexibility to your travel planning. You can mix and match partners without worrying about paying more for a partner award chart, and you can even book your outbound and return trips in two different classes of service depending on what award space is available.

Earning Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca LifeMiles are some of the easiest to earn , as you can transfer from American Express, Capital One, Citi or Marriott. Avianca also frequently sells miles at steep discounts if you need to top up your account balance after a transfer.

4. American Airlines AAdvantage

Booking through American Airlines AAdvantage will give you access to the same top-notch Oneworld airlines as Alaska, namely Cathay Pacific and JAL. While awards are noticeably more expensive and don't include a free stopover, American miles are much easier to earn for the average traveler. In addition, you can leverage more flexibility with partners (like flying American from the US to Asia and then connecting on JAL or Cathay Pacific to Bangkok, routings that aren't available using Alaska miles).

One-way awards booked through AAdvantage cost the following amount:

  • Economy: 37,500 miles
  • Business: 70,000 miles
  • First: 110,000 miles

Unfortunately, neither Cathay Pacific nor JAL awards can be booked on the American app or website, so you'll need to search for award space on a Oneworld search engine like British Airways or Qantas and call in to book. You might have a hard time finding premium cabin Cathay Pacific award availability after the incredibly generous mistake fare from January , but with Cathay flying multiple daily frequencies from major airports like New York-JFK and Los Angeles (LAX), economy space is still easy to find.

air travel to thailand

Earning AAdvantage Miles

In addition to earning AAdvantage miles on American flights, you can also take advantage of current offers on a couple of the carrier's cobranded credit cards. New cardholders of the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® can earn a sign-up bonus of 50,000 bonus miles after spending $2,500 on purchases in the first three months of account opening, while opening the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® can snag you a bonus of 65,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $4,000 in purchases within the first 4 months of account opening. Unfortunately the program only partners with Marriott Bonvoy when it comes to transferable rewards.

The information for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card and CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

5. Book a Cash Ticket and Pay With Points

As I mentioned at the beginning, Bangkok is a very frequent target of fare sales from many major airlines. You might be able to come out ahead leveraging one of these fare sales and stacking it with a pay with points bonus or rebate on one of the following credit cards:

Note that when utilizing the Amex Pay With Points bonus, you need to have the full number of points in your account, and your rebate will post several weeks later. This bonus is only available with your designated airline if booking economy awards, though it extends to any airline if you're booking premium cabin flights. You can read our full guide to the program here .

When looking at transfer options, ANA's 55,000-mile economy round-trip was about the cheapest rate you're going to find. However, Sapphire Reserve cardholders could book a ticket on China Southern Airlines for only 34,127 points round-trip. Instead of methodically searching for award availability, you can simply check Google Flights and see that these low prices are available for weeks at a time.

air travel to thailand

You can even score some decent deals on business class fares this way. ~150,000 miles round-trip isn't the best deal we've seen but it's not bad either, especially when you consider that these are booked as revenue tickets, meaning you earn both redeemable and elite qualifying miles on them.

air travel to thailand

Just be sure to check the paid rates for flights on your desired travel dates before jumping to transfer your points, as it may make more sense to utilize a fixed-value reward option.

What About SkyTeam?

At this point, some of you may be wondering why SkyTeam wasn't shown any love. Sadly, this is due to the shift to variable pricing with the most popular loyalty programs of its carriers. Since Delta removed its award charts back in 2015 and Flying Blue shifted to dynamic award pricing in 2018, it's become impossible to say with certainty what a given award will cost. However, Delta does partner with Amex Membership Rewards, and Flying Blue is a transfer partner of all of the major transferable point currencies, so if you're dead-set on traveling to Thailand with a SkyTeam airline, be sure to check award rates through those two programs.

Bottom Line

So many different airlines fly to Bangkok that no matter what miles you have in your wallet, you should be able to find at least one decent way to get there. Depending on award availability, you'll have to decide whether you want the cheapest mileage rates, the lowest taxes and surcharges, a free stopover or some combination. And don't forget to keep an eye on cash prices before you book. While you typically won't be able to get any high-value redemptions using a fixed value redemption, you might end up finding the cheapest tickets this way, saving yourself some serious effort along the way.

Travellers looking to fly from Vancouver to Thailand can enjoy direct service to the bucket-list destination

From its vibrant, bustling city streets to its achingly beautiful beaches, Thailand offers some of the best places to soak in local culture, enjoy a wild night out, or lay back on a sparkling white sand shore.

Bangkok is a great place to explore ancient shrines and taste a variety of street food, boasting sprawling "eating streets" that you'd be hard-pressed to make a considerable dent in.

While Bangkok is its capital city, there is a vast array of unique travel experiences across the popular Southeast Asia destination. Some of the viewpoints on the country's islands are also said to feature some of the most awe-inspiring sunsets in the world.

Find out everything you need to know about planning your trip to Thailand from Vancouver.

What airlines should I fly with to Thailand?

From Vancouver International Airport (YVR), travellers can fly directly to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok or via a connecting flight.

Airlines that fly to or partially to Bangkok via one of their airline partners include:

  • ANA (All Nippon Airways)
  • Bangkok Airways
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • China Airlines
  • China Southern
  • JAL (Japan Airlines)
  • KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines)
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Philippine Airlines
  • Qatar Airways
  • Sichuan Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Thai Airways
  • Turkish Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • Zipair Tokyo

Travellers may also wish to fly to other airports, such as the Phuket International Airport (HKT).

When should I book my ticket to Thailand?

Tickets to Thailand should generally be booked five or six months in advance. Unless a large airline drops its fares, these tickets tend to increase in price closer to the date of departure.

It is possible to get tickets for round-trip flights from YVR to BKK for around $1,000 if they are booked in advance. However, these lower-cost tickets typically include one or more stops.

What makes Air Canada's flight from Vancouver to Thailand unique?

Tourists looking to fly from Vancouver to Thailand this fall can enjoy the only nonstop service in North America to Bangkok.

Air Canada has announced an early start to its seasonal service connecting YVR and BKK . Due to increasing popularity, flights between the cities will commence on Oct. 27; the airline had planned to resume the flight in early December.

From Oct. 27 through the end of November, Air Canada will operate thrice-weekly flights on the route on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Starting in December and continuing through March 2025, the airline will ramp up its service to five flights weekly.

Flights cost around $2,000 from Vancouver but offer the only way for locals to get to Thailand without making at least one stop.

When is the best time of year to visit Thailand?

Most people advise visiting Thailand between November and March when the monsoon rains have dissipated. However, this is also when most people visit.

September, October, and April are also good choices to avoid crowds.

Is it safe to visit Thailand?

While it is one of the most popular destinations for Canadian tourists, the government urges travellers to exercise a high degree of caution when visiting the country.

The Thailand travel advisory includes regional risks in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla, and Yala. People should avoid all travel to the "unpredictable security situation" with periodic violent attacks by separatist grounds that include shootings, bombings and arson. While the attacks are typically directed at the government, bystanders could get caught in the crossfire or be in a targeted building.

Martial law and "heavily enhanced security measures" are in place In Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, and Sadao District in Songkhla

Increased enforcement powers allow authorities to:

  • detain suspects without charge
  • conduct searches
  • seize objects or documents
  • impose curfews

Travellers must also exercise a high degree of caution In the Myanmar border areas in the provinces of Mae Hong Son and Tak where there is "occasional violence, banditry and clashes between government forces and drug traffickers." Border-crossing points may also be closed without notice.

Thailand and Cambodia dispute the borders in the Preah Vihear Temple area and the surrounding border region; there are reports of landmines in the temple area.

Exercise a high degree of caution if you are travelling to any other Thai–Cambodian border areas.

The Canadian government warns that Political tensions have created an "unpredictable security environment throughout the country, particularly in Bangkok."

The advisory notes that legal provisions may allow the military to retain and exercise sweeping powers at any time that could include the right to:

  • prevent public gatherings
  • censor media
  • set up checkpoints
  • restrict movement
  • search for weapons
  • exercise force in response to violence

Some television channels, radio stations, and websites may be unavailable, and access to social media services may be intermittently suspended.

Public demonstrations are common and may turn violent at any time. There is also a threat of terrorism and small-scale bomb attacks have occurred in public places throughout the county.

Petty crime is also common throughout the country, including pick-pocketing and purse snatching. Thieves may use razors to cut purse straps. Thefts also occur on cross-country buses and vans and personal belongings are stolen from luggage compartments under buses. Travellers should only use reputable companies.

ATM scams and fraud are common and should be reported to local police. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards.

Road collisions are common across Thailand due to poorly maintained roads, adverse weather conditions, and disregard for laws. Travellers should avoid driving on mountain roads at night. Many roads are "impassable" during the rainy season.

Motorcycles Rental scooters and motorcycles are often poorly maintained, making them unsafe for their riders and others on the road.

Important considerations for water activities in Thailand for tourists to know

Tourists planning on spending time in the water need to consider several risks.

According to the Canadian government, people have died after coming in contact with poisonous jellyfish off Koh Lanta, Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Phi Phi, Krabi, and Phuket.

Several deaths from drowning have occurred in popular coastal areas. People have been caught in riptides in Cha-am/Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Pattaya, Phuket, and Rayong.

Diving schools and rescue services may not adhere to international standards. Canada advises the following to stay safe:

  • Rent water sports equipment only from operators affiliated with major international training organizations
  • Exercise extreme caution when swimming or practicing water activities
  • Heed flag warnings and don’t swim when a red flag is displayed
  • If stung by a jellyfish, seek immediate medical assistance

Similarly, travellers who plan to enjoy any adventure tourism, whether on land or sea, should exercise caution. Always choose a reputable tour company or operator with insurance. If you doubt the safety of the installation or equipment, do not use them.

Do I need to get any special travel vaccines ahead of visiting Thailand?

Visit a  travel medical clinic  before you book a ticket. The healthcare professionals will inform you about what vaccinations you require and what you can expect on your trip.

There is a risk of contracting chikungunya in Japan, which is a disease spread by mosquitoes; it typically causes fever and pain in the joints and this pain "can be severe and last for months or years."

Do I require a visa to visit Thailand?

Tourists do not require a visa for stays up to 30 days in Thailand.

You can stay for up to 60 days if you obtain a multiple-entry tourist visa. The visa is valid for six months and must be obtained before travelling.

Your passport must be valid at least six months upon entry into Thailand.

What kind of activities can I enjoy in Thailand?

Floating markets are one of the most popular attractions in Bangkok, bringing locals and tourists together to shop from passing boats in the rivers.

Tourists can also take the river shuttle boat up the Chao Phraya River, known as the River of Kings. The important waterway brings people to noteworthy attractions such as the Grand Palace. Visitors to the palace must adhere to a strict dress code.

Phuket, one of Thailand's most popular vacation spots, is a lush, mountainous island in the Andaman Sea. It offers some of the country's most breathtaking beaches with sparkling turquoise waters.

Thailand's crystal-clear waters offer the perfect playground for water activities, including diving, snorkelling, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding.

How much money will I spend on accommodation?

Accommodation prices vary dramatically across Thailand, ranging from ultra-budget options to posh hotels. However, most places are reasonably prices, with only a handful of options exceeding the $200+ range.

Cost-conscious travellers can find places to lay their head starting at under $10, although they shouldn't expect a lavish stay. For instance, a one-night stay at the  Matchbox Bangkok Hostel ranges from $9 to $20 and has an " excellent" rating on Tripadvisor based on $141 reviews. It's an ideal place for backpackers who don't mind sleeping in dorm-style accommodation with a shared lounge, bathrooms, and a kitchen.

On the other end of the spectrum, the  Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok offers a lavish oasis in the heart of Bangkok starting at upwards of $400 for a night's stay. The five-star hotel offers a luxurious spa, Thai-inspired fine dining with modern elements, and elegant rooms.

Numerous options cost under $100 and provide a private stay in the heart of Bangkok. Always read reviews before booking and keep in mind that some options may be more secure than others.
