All About Aloha Vintage Travel Trailers

After purchasing my 1968 Aloha vintage travel trailer a few weeks ago I started to research information on the Web, curious about the brand, year… how others had decorated the inside.   Story of the $200 Vintage Trailer

All About Aloha Vintage Travel Trailers

I was (still am) a bit enamored with my little tin can that I got for a steal… and wanted to know all about her and her history.

The best resource by far was (and is) Tin Can Tourist’s Wiki page : Aloha Travel Trailers .

Quoted from the website:

“Aloha manufactured economic travel trailers from 1954 to 1970. They were a small comapany but quite popular.”
“The smallest trailer they made was 11′ and the largest they manufactured was 28′, at the height of their production in the 1960’s they were making 17-19 trailers a day, had several hundred employees, owned their buildings and even had a night shift to keep up with production.” “The main areas where they sold and marketed their trailers were OR, WA, ID and BC and at one point held 13% of the regional market which was ‘a remarkable amount’ for a small company. Their most popular trailer was the 15′ Beaver.”
“Because they were making their trailers for the NW market they had a few unique characteristics including a larger than normal drip rail and thicker plywood around the wheel wells to help deal with moisture.” “Their biggest technological innovation however was wrapping the framing stringers around the frame so there wasn’t just a box built onto a frame, this resulted in much higher stability than other travel trailers at the time.”

I was born and raised in Seattle, WA and also learned that Aloha trailers were sold in mass and used as extra housing for the over-load of tourists that descended upon the city during the 1962 Worlds Fair.

An easy way to search for photographs of anything on the web is to do a Google search and then click on ‘Images’ (default setting is ‘Web’).

When I did this search the first time I got a bit of a kick out of the fact one of my photos pulled in that I had put on this page: My New Vintage Travel Trailer .

More photos of Aloha trailers are here: Old Trailer.com Aloha Pics

This page on ‘My Vintage Travel Trailer’ website didn’t list my year of trailer, but has most other Aloha year, makes and models with information on the weight of the trailer and the hitch weight: Aloha Travel Trailers .

Old Trailer.com has photos of many vintage trailer decals and logos, with years and information (so you can then search to buy online!), fun to scroll through: Old Trailer.com Vintage Decals

What an amazing deal! We just bought your exact same trailer today for $600! We are so excited to fix her up! It is in great structural condition and I am just trying to redo to enterior to fit our family. I’m curious, did yours come with wallpaper? Ours has wallpaper covering almost entire enterior and painted white. We started peeling it to discover beautiful birch underneath. So now I’m trying to strip it all off. How is yours going???

That is an awesome deal as well! Mine was just really dirty, took weeks to clean and had a dried out bee hive attached to front window – obviously had been sitting for a long time. I had panneling on walls, not sure what type of wood but that original light-grey color. I painted the whole trailer to clean it up and give it some color (soft yellow/white/blue-green).

On the ceiling not sure what the nice wood (again, thin paneling but very newish) that had wallpapper. Ended up with a fun ‘splash’ painted yellow/white ceiling as was going to use burlap then it was just way too dusty to put up but now loved how it turned out, is funky and fun.

I have some paint touch-ups left and a new futon to buy but have done all the painting (saved original hinges and handles that I did not like then looked awesome with the new paint – score! The floor is the original linoleum, stove orignal Trav’ler (olive color) and works, removed ice box (trashed) to find a hole behind on the lower part of trailer – LOL – easy repair.

Has been fun, I love the trailer, going to put up a bunch of pages on blog about what I did when is finished.

Would be fun to interview you too about what you are doing etc. if you want! I want to see pics!!!

I have a 1961 Ford Motor home made by aloha trailer..

Hi Molly! Great to read about your Aloha trailer restoration project. We have some info on Aloha and other vintage trailers at http://www.myvintagetraveltrailer.com/ Keep up the good work!

Thanks and I have come across your site before and think it is great, have a new post coming up soon, would be a good one to include a link as it is about ‘learning about your vintage trailer’. Will send you a note via your site when is up, cheers, Molly

Hi there molly great find i have too alohas one is a 1955 compact and the other is 1955 15 foot.both need restoring.my 15 foot i payed 575 for my compact 950. Looking too sell my compact for 500 if you know any one interested. Love theys trailers i live in portland oregon.

I’m interested in you compact and also live in Portland. Let me know if it’s still available!

Thanks, Raymond

Hi, sorry so late but we did sell it. I hope you find one, there are many out there just be patient and keep looking!

best, Molly

I loved that little trailer, had to sell her so could help my son get into an apartment for college. Made a little profit, so that was awesome but I did do a ton of work getting her cleaned and cutened up so isn’t like I made a ton of cash. We got to travel in her for a few months, she towed awesome and was nice to have to relax in.

I think for my next trailer project it is going to be a newer model, maybe even a truck camper (I’m a big baby when it comes to towing) – mainly as I may want to stay put in places off and on and it is harder to do that with an older camper.

To sell your camper post on the Glampers on the Loose Facebook group – huge number of folks who are looking for just that type of camper at that price~! https://www.facebook.com/groups/glampersontheloose/

I just bought an 18′ 1967 aloha, but I need a new door and a couple windows. Any suggestions on where I can find them?

Sorry Brooke, I missed this! I had to replace our door (was not cheap, over $800 as it was custom built) – Camping World did the repair and were great. Windows I don’t know, I’d search online as there are suppliers for some parts, and of course you can always custom order windows to fit the trailer.

Have fun, I loved my little Aloha, did not want to sell but had to!

I have a vintage camping trailer for sale I just don’t know were to post it for sale if any one can guide me thanks

Craigslist is excellent – especially if you live near any major city but even in small towns you should get responses, many search the site for statewide listings, other states, etc.

Also – there is a facebook group called ‘Glampers on the Loose’ – and these folks are always looking for trailers to buy, if the price is fair.

Be sure to post there, or send me the info and I can post it for you!

We just bought a 1964, 16′ Aloha trailer. Very cute. Oven has never been cooked in. All the flooring and counter tops r perfect. Sink is (pink) yuck.. lol. Going to Soda blast the outside paint and polish the Aluminum. Were pulling it behind our Hot Rod for car shows.

Awesome and it sounds like you are going to have some fun with her/him/it 🙂

My dad is Glen Gordon he’s still around he was the founder and he and I could tell you more about these trailers then anyone

I have a 63 11’aloha that I was given and need to redo it appears as if the paneling was mailed to the studs and not the studs nailed too the paneling from the out side like I have seen on video, is that true?

Have no clue LOL. I just cutened up mine (paint, etc.) – did not need any major repairs. There are a bunch of Aloha groups on Facebook, for sure check those out and I am sure someone can help you. Best, Molly

Brilliant! I don’t own mine anymore but will pass that info on to anyone who is interested. Thanks for the comment, Molly

Jeff, Do you remember John (Cecil) Johnson?

Mybwige and I restore vintage trailers and just finished restoring a 1962 Aloha 12ft Trailer. It is basically a brand new 1962 Aloha. If I could add pics I would but if anyone is interested please let us know. [email protected]

Hi there, Not knowing if you are still out there, I still want to thank you for starting Aloha. We have a 1962 Aloha King 15’3 ft And am wondering if you know if the tongue weight of it is. Ive seen the trailer weight as being 1,690 and trailer hitch ( tongue?) weight of 180lbs. We finished restoring it and are now staring to enjoy the heck out of it . I just love it! if you know of any other Aloha information I would love to know where I can get it.

thanks! mario

I need to reinforce the walls of a 1966 Aloha to accommodate the weight of a food cart … Can you tell me what the walls are constructed with?

Vintage RV — 1963 Aloha Travel Trailer

At its peak, the company employed several hundred workers, produced almost 20 trailers a day and held an almost 15% share of the northwest market.

An Aloha trailer, spotted in a consignment lot.

I have to admit that I had not heard of the Aloha travel trailer before recently encountering a model sitting on a consignment sales lot in Kalispell, Montana. But this little "built for the Northwest" unit definitely caught my attention. It was listed as a very rare 1963 Aloha travel trailer model, complete with dinette/bed, overhead bunk, built-in dresser, closet with toilet, kitchen with sink, stove/oven, icebox, catalytic heater and all original. Listed at $3,500.

So I needed to do some digging to discover more info on the Aloha trailers, evidently built in Beaverton, Oregon, for a manufacturing run of some sixteen years.

According to the vintage trailer website Tin Can Tourist , the Aloha trailer was a popular choice for RV’ers back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s:

“Aloha manufactured economic travel trailers from 1954 to 1970. They were a small company but quite popular.”

“The smallest trailer they made was 11′ and the largest they manufactured was 28′, at the height of their production in the 1960’s they were making 17-19 trailers a day, had several hundred employees, owned their buildings and even had a night shift to keep up with production.”

“The main areas where they sold and marketed their trailers were OR, WA, ID and BC and at one point held 13% of the regional market which was ‘a remarkable amount’ for a small company. Their most popular trailer was the 15′ Beaver.”

Close-up view of the Aloha Trailer company logo.

“Because they were making their trailers for the NW market they had a few unique characteristics including a larger than normal drip rail and thicker plywood around the wheel wells to help deal with moisture.”

“Their biggest technological innovation however was wrapping the framing stringers around the frame so there wasn’t just a box built onto a frame, this resulted in much higher stability than other travel trailers at the time.”

The vintage website called Old Trailer.com documents even more info on the Aloha:

"Catering primarily to the Pacific Northwest region (OR, WA, ID and British Columbia), the Aloha Trailer company began manufacturing Aloha Travel Trailers in 1954 out of their facility in Aloha, Oregon. Glen Gordon acquired the company on July 6, 1959, relocated it to Beaverton, Oregon (near 142nd Ave), and continued to grow the company.

At its peak, Gordon's company employed several hundred workers, produced almost 20 trailers a day and held an almost 15% share of the Northwest market. But as America's demand for low-cost family travel trailers waned, Gordon sold the company to Woodtech in 1969. Woodtech continued manufacturing Aloha trailers into the 1970's.

During its history, Aloha manufactured a broad range of models and sizes, from the 11 ft. "Compact" to the 18 ft. "Deluxe", best selling 15 ft. "Beaver" and even a spacious 28 ft. model. Besides travel trailers, Aloha also manufactured custom motor homes, truck-mounted campers, and even a few "houseboats" built on barges! An interesting history tidbit: Aloha saw a spike in travel trailer sales during the 1964 Seattle World's Fair, as scarce housing for fair visitors drove enterprising Northwest locals to park Aloha trailers on their property and rent them out as temporary lodging!

Back view of the Aloha trailer.

Like most smaller family travel trailers of the era, Aloha trailers followed the familiar "canned-ham" shape and consisted of a wood frame sheathed with thin sheets of ribbed aluminum panels. But to improve rigidity, Aloha trailers featured a unique wall framing design that incorporated the wood platform instead of just setting the walls on top of the platform.

Aloha's sales slogan was "Built in the Northwest... for the Northwest" so these Northwest beauties included special features for this "damp" climate, including wider drip rails and thicker plywood backing along the bottom edges of the trailer and around the wheel well openings. Aloha's sturdy designs and affordability made them a popular choice for West Coast families in the 1950's and 1960's, and today they're highly prized by trailer restorers searching for a classic "canned ham" style vintage trailer."

So there you have it - another vintage travel trailer with a colourful history and fine legacy amongst vintage trailer enthusiasts, with deep ties to the Pacific Northwest.

On March 1st and 2nd 2010, I interview Glen Gordon who owned the company in the late 1950’s through the 1960’s. Here is info from that interview. The company was originally started in Aloha Oregon in 1954 (hence the name), Glen Gordon bought the company on July 6, 1959 when he was still in his 20’s with a business partner and they expanded the business and moved it to Beaverton near 142nd Ave. They sold the company in 1969 to a company called Woodtech for ‘several million dollars’ because of changes in automobiles and the economy travel trailers were falling out of favor.

Although they were most well known for their travel trailers they also manufactured a variety of truck campers, and made a few custom motor homes by attaching their trailers to Chevy frames and even a few house barges by attaching their trailer frames onto barges (how cool would that be?)

The smallest trailer they made was 11′ and the largest they manufactured was 28′, at the height of their production in the 1960’s they were making 17-19 trailers a day, had several hundred employees, owned their buildings and even had a night shift to keep up with production. The main areas where they sold and marketed their trailers were OR, WA, ID and BC and at one point held 13% of the regional market which was ‘a remarkable amount’ for a small company. Their most popular trailer was the 15′ Beaver.

Because they were making their trailers for the NW market they had a few unique characteristics including a larger than normal drip rail and thicker plywood around the wheel wells to help deal with moisture. Their biggest technological innovation however was wrapping the framing stringers around the frame so there wasn’t just a box built onto a frame, this resulted in much higher stability than other travel trailers at the time.

They also made several custom trailers for nature writers such as Francis Ames. They were also significant to the 1962 Seattle Worlds fair because there was a shortage of housing for all of the tourists they sold hundreds to enterprising Seattleites whom rented them out as vacation rentals.

1976 Trillium 1300 fiberglass travel trailer/ scamp/ casita/ egg camper

1976 Trillium 1300 fiberglass travel trailer/ scamp/ casita/ egg camper

Swartz Creek, Michigan

Model Trillium

Length 13 ft.

I'am regretfully selling my 1976 Trillium travel trailer, circumstances have not allowed me to continue my restoration of my lovely little camper. I'am hoping it goes to someone that can finish her and not use her as a hunting cabin! It started out with the original orange, brown and yellow interior, it needed a lot of work! What needs to be finished on it is the easy part now. It has all new upholstery in Apple green, all new light birch lamented flooring, all old doors taken off, holes filled with fiberglass so there would be a clear view. I did not want doors. A new countertop with reed, glued to it as well as the table. My intensions were to pour resin over the top of post cards and beachy type things and the resin would seal everything over the countertop. This was going to be our Aloha camper. The stove top was taken out and a regular plug in cooktop to replace it. A new Martha Stewart Faucett is included which will need a very small round sink, a brand new Farberware cooktop is also included in an unopened box incase of not wanting to use or install a propane stovetop, the original was old and I really didn't care if I had propane or not. The inside of the trillium was painted 2 years ago and has held up excellent. I used primer Gripper and would use it again if I ever painted fiberglass again. I researched it well before ever painting my little camper because I wanted it done right the first time. The fiberglass was sanded, cleaned, primed and then painted. It has held up to the Michigan winters and the heat. These are the things that will need to be done.* New tires* windows put back in, brand new screws included, paid 25.00* Door and Awning put back on* T molding, needs to be ordered, can be ordered from Trillium* upper bunk reconnected* Faucett installed, and included, * surround top shelving put back in. * Break lightsOriginal title included, outside of trillium has been lightly sanded and is ready for paint.* Furnace cover replaced.* Comes with original water tank, needs install.* Original propane dometic fridge is untested.

Hi there I’m John rouse from portland oregon just wanted too say like the info on the aloha trailers. I own a 1955 compact aloha she’s 13.5 long total. I’m going to have a complete restoration done on her next spring having a good friend in bend oregon do the restore. I’m glad I bought this trailer last march these little canham trailers are hard to find, plus I like the fact that it was built in oregon. I live near portland. Hope too use her a lot when I can she will look like a little shinnie canham when done.

Thanks for this info! I am the owner of a 1968 Aloha I am fixing up now – love it. Some pics and info here: http://www.mollymchugh.com/story-200-vintage-trailer/ .

I have the use of an Aloha trailer for a couple weeks. The nice couple lending it to us received it as compensation for work done and has never used it. Neither knows anything about it. It’s in liveable condition. I’m trying to understand the potable water supply system. Can I ask my questions here or is there a better website to do so?

Hi, I am the proud owner of a 1954 Aloha just wondering if anyone out there has one that old. WOuld love to see photos or get more info on mine. She is 10ft not including tongue and in incredible shape for one this old and mostly original.

I have a 1955 Aloha trailer 13 feet. my husband, cousin and I have replaced the birch panels that were rotted out. We took it to its first rally a couple of weeks ago and had a great time showing it off. This little trailer was a great find. It has most of its original parts. All that I am missing is tail lights for it which is a problem. I can’t find after market tail lights that are surface mounted. All that I can find are recessed into the skin. I’m hoping that someone out there has some or can help me find some. Please help! Asos how come no info for 1955 on your page. Thanks Junell

I have an Aloha camping trailer definitely a vintage one other than that i don’t know much about it. how do i go about finding out info on it? i had thought about selling it as i don’t use it anymore and don’t have know what to ask for a selling price help?

I might be interested if you are looking to sell. Do you have details on condition, year etc? I have an Aloha but someone crashed into it, hit and run. Not sure if it is worth fixing.

The photo for Aloha trailers, the (pink) one is not an Aloha model. It’s a re-done Forester 1966, Just saying.

VintageGuy, I just looked at similar trailer to purchase. It looks just like it but the owner said the title dosent match the name on the trailer. Please give me any insight on this discrepency you may have. The trailer I am intrested in has an Aloha badge left of the door just like the one in the picture. I must admit the title issue scare me away but you may know something that has got me intrested again.

Hi there! I recently acquired a 1964 15′ Aloha travel trailer. Everything has been gutted from the inside so it is now basically an empty room. Curious if anyone out there may have an idea of what the weight would be now that it has been gutted? My car only hauls 1500, wondering if it could haul my beautiful new trailer!

I have an aloha camper im guessing mid 60s. Im trying to sell. Any one interested? My number is 2562522187 located in Alabama. Can send pictures.

Hello there! I purchased a 1971 Aloha trailer from a friend, and completely restored it with a “Hello Kitty” theme. Now, all I need is a decal for the top back. Does anyone know where to find the specifics on the decal and where I may purchase one? (The original one was damaged and painted over).Thanks.

Hey all, we have an alpha travel trailer Title says 1950 “aloa”. Wondering if title is wrong. But it looks exactly like the pink trailer pictured above Including the little wooden corner piece in front and Back hatch picture. Anyone have photos of theirs? mattblaine81@yahoo.com

I recentley purchased a 1965 15′ Aloha Camper. I am trying to register it with the DMV but don’t have a VIN#. Can anypne tell me where I might find this number? I have the origianl Aloha plate near the door that has the Model, Serial# and MFG. I have read it could be on the tongue, but cannot seem to find it, but it has been painted which may be hiding the number? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards John

Does anyone know how much a 1954 Bellwood trailer weighs?

I also have a ’54 Bellwood Kelly, and have always wondered the same. Did you find the answer anywhere?

Excited to find this page, to learn more about my 1967 16 ft Aloha. It’s been my parent’s trailer since the early 70s and hasn’t been touched in terms of remodeling or rehabbing. If you have advice on how to find out about mold, electrical, or plumbing, I could sure use it. I’d love a couple of names of trailer rehab experts in the Portland area if you know of any. Thanks! I’m so excited to join the club!

I am also excited to find this page. Three years ago we were looking for a vintage small trailer to fix up and found a 1964 Aloha 13 ft. Up in the mountains in Casmier Washington. Three feet of snow on the ground, covered with a shot blue tarp. We hooked up to it and four wheel drive made it down the mountain. I so far hand taken it down to the frame, totally re condition floor ,de skinned her. Rebuilding her was a challenge. But I put new walls ,salvaged what I could to keep the original structure, adding a full bathroom,SS back splash and counters ,storage, and fold down bed.HW tank SS sink. What is so neet about her is the trailer is the only one left out of eight used for temporary housing at the 1962 Seattle worlds fair in1964. And we got her.

George here forgot to mention she cost us 200.00

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

International Competition 2018, Moscow, Russia.

22nd July 2018 Congress Center of the WTC, Moscow, Russia.

“It is a special day because we are in Russia and you’re here; we’re all together here with our children”.

On 22nd July 2018, 17 countries (Bangladesh, China, Croatia, Ecuador, Germany, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Panama, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and Uzbekistan) participated in the competition and celebrated with us the 25th anniversary of ALOHA at Moscow’s World Trade Centre (WTC).

In the morning of the event day, nearly 1,500 parents and 600 children gathered at the Congress Center of the WTC, greeted by ALOHA International and ALOHA Russia team members, and entered the hall decorated with hand-painted wallpaper featuring Moscow scenic skyline. Before the competition began, overseas delegates entered the hall as flag bearers, carrying their respective national flag, whereas children, the national representatives waved their national flags. Participants also observed the Ceremony for Signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ALOHA International and Mr. Deepak Joshi from Nepal.

Parents and children returned to the Congress Center at 2pm. The prize-giving ceremony began with the ‘Colours of the World’ concert, where children from various countries performed and demonstrated their national culture to the audiences. It was echoed with rounds of applauses. The concert was preceded by a keynote speech by Mr. Loh Mun Sung, the Founder President of ALOHA Mental Arithmetic, and Dr. Janna Khegai, the Director of ALOHA Russia. Winners received the symbolic 25th Anniversary ALOHA-going-global trophies from VIP guests when names are announced. The event came to an end with the vote of thanks to all parties contributed to make the event a huge success.

Children spent the rest of their stay visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg with their families and other ALOHA children from the rest of the world.

We will continue to, quoting Mr. Loh’s keynote speech, “do the best for our children” in the coming years. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
