After a few weeks on the islands of Hawaii, the PGA Tour has made its way to the mainland for The American Express at PGA West in La Quinta, California.

A loaded field will tee it up for the third event of 2024, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Tom Kim, Sam Burns, Tony Finau and Jason Day.

Scheffler, the betting favorite at +550, tied for 11th at PGA West last season and is coming off a T-5 performance at The Sentry.

Defending champion Jon Rahm isn’t in the field due to his recent move to LIV Golf.

Three courses will be used over the first three rounds — Pete Dye Stadium Course, Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club — before the final round is played at the Stadium Course.

Xander Schauffele (12/1)

Schauffele got his 2024 underway with a T-10 finish at The Sentry.

At last year’s American Express, the world No. 6 tied for third.

It feels like Schauffele is due for a win with his last coming at the 2022 Scottish Open.

Sungjae Im (20/1)

Im loves The American Express.

In five starts, Im has finished T-12 (2019), T-10 (2020), T-12 (2021), T-11 (2022) and T-18 (2023) at PGA West.

At The Sentry, Im opened 2024 with a T-5 finish.

I had Poston on the card at the Sony, and he eventually finished solo sixth a week after tying for fifth at The Sentry.

Over his last five starts at The American Express, Poston has made four cuts and finished inside the top 10 twice (T-6 in 2023, T-7 in 2019).

Jason Day (35/1)

Day has played some great golf over the last month and a half. He teamed with Lydia Ko to win the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational in December, then tied for 10th at The Sentry in Maui.

In two previous appearances at The American Express, Day has tied for 49th (2022) and 18th (2023).

After 2 weeks in Hawaii, the PGA Tour has packed up and headed to California for the West Coast swing of the 2024 schedule. It begins with the 2024 American Express , which will be played across 3 courses this week in La Quinta, Calif., as many of the top players in the world ramp up in the early part of the season.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets among the 2024 American Express odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Scottie Scheffler didn’t play in the Sony Open last week, but he enters The American Express as the betting favorite at +550. Patrick Cantlay has the 2nd-best odds at +1000, followed by Xander Schauffele at +1100. Justin Thomas is making his 2024 debut and has +2500 odds to win this week in California.

The field will play three separate courses from Thursday to Saturday, followed by a 54-hole cut. They’ll tee it up at the Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses at PGA West, as well as La Quinta Country Club. All three courses are par 72 and less than 7,200 yards, so they’re not the longest on tour but La Quinta and the Stadium course feature some of the smallest greens on tour.

Xander Schauffele (+220)

Schauffele finished 3rd here last year and 10th at The Sentry 2 weeks ago, quickly rounding into good form this early in the season. It’s a strong field, but Schauffele is a good value at +220 for his 2nd straight top 5 in this event.

J.T. Poston (+600)

Poston finished 6th here last year with rounds of 65, 66, 66 and 68, going low in all 4 rounds. It was his 2nd straight top-25 finish in this event and his 2nd top-10 here in the last 5 years, taking advantage of the shorter courses in La Quinta. And he’s coming off a final-round 61 at the Sony Open.

The American Express – Top-10 picks

Sungjae im (+200).

Im is an absolute horse in this event, with a 10th-place finish, an 11th-place and two 12th-place results in the last 5 years. Take him again at an event he loves.

Tony Finau (+320)

Finau struggled a little bit in The Sentry, finishing 38th, but he’s notched 3 top-16s in his last 4 starts in this event, including a 4th-place in 2021. He needs to get his putter going in order to contend because it wasn’t great last year and has started slow this season, too.

Patrick Cantlay (+100)

Cantlay’s worst finish in this event in his last 4 starts was 26th last year after coming in 9th, 2nd and 9th in his previous 3 appearances. He hasn’t finished worse than 15th in any of his last 4 starts worldwide, so he’s riding some momentum.

The American Express – Top-20 picks

Adam hadwin (+225).

Hadwin has finished 28th, 25th, 32nd and 2nd in his last 4 starts in this event, finding a groove in this 3-course circuit. He only missed the cut by 1 shot last week at the Sony Open so don’t put too much stock in that and buy him on the dip at +225 for a top-20 finish.

Si Woo Kim (+175)

The 2021 champion has played here in each of the last 5 years and has really excelled in his last 3 trips to La Quinta, finishing 1st, 11th and then 21st a year ago. He finished 25th and 42nd in his 2 starts so far this year.

Not a lot of matchups to like this week but I’ll bite on Hossler over Jaeger. After missing the cut 3 straight times from 2019-21 here, he finished 50th last year. More importantly, he’s finished between 2nd and 30th in his last 5 starts on tour.

The American Express – Top Australian

Jason day (+188).

Min Woo Lee is the favorite to be the top Australian this week but give me Day instead at +188. Day finished 18th here last year, whereas Lee has never played here, and he’s also fresh off a 10th-place finish at The Sentry.

The American Express – First-round leader (La Quinta)

Erik van rooyen (+3300).

With players teeing it up at 3 different courses on Thursday, 1st-round leader bets are tougher to project. I’ll take a chance on van Rooyen, who shot 65 and was tied for 7th after the 1st round last year.

The American Express – To make the cut

Cam davis, taylor montgomery and hadwin: yes (+225).

Davis missed the cut here last year, but he finished 3rd, 29th and 28th in his previous 3 starts and just came in 30th at the Sony Open last week. Montgomery and Hadwin both came in the top 20 last year. With a 54-hole cut, the better players should separate from the rest a bit easier compared to a 36-hole cut.

The American Express 2024 odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that's nailed 10 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the 2024 american express 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

The 2024 PGA Tour season will continue this week in La Quinta, Calif., when PGA West hosts the 2024 American Express. The first tee times come at 11:30 a.m. ET on Thursday. The 156-player field will compete on both the Stadium Course and the Nicklaus Tournament Course on the PGA West property, and some of the biggest names in the sport are scheduled to tee it up this week. Scottie Scheffler is the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking and he'll return to action after finishing T-5 in The Sentry two weeks ago to begin his season.

Scheffler has three top-five finishes with a win in his last four worldwide starts and he's the 11-2 favorite in the 2024 American Express odds entering the week. He's followed by Ryder Cup partners Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay (both 9-1) and Justin Thomas (20-1) in this week's PGA Tour odds. SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at +7000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Top 2024 American Express predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at The American Express 2024: Schauffele, a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour and one of the top favorites, struggles this week and barely cracks the top five. Schauffele is coming off a tie for 10th place at The Sentry, shooting 24-under-par in his first event of the season. 

He finished in third place at The American Express last year, but he was outside the top 10 in 2022. While Schauffele performed well on the green during the 2022-23 season, he was not nearly as good off the tee. He finished the year ranked outside the top 100 on the PGA Tour in total driving and driving accuracy, giving bettors a reason to avoid him at short odds this week. 

Another surprise: Jason Day, a 35-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. Day has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 36-year-old is a former world No.1 who fell to as low as 175th in the OWGR but he's back inside the top 20 (18th) after a resurgent season in 2022-23 where he had eight top-10 finishes and a win.

Day's win at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson was his first in over five years and he's now up to 13 career victories on the PGA Tour, including a major win at the 2015 PGA Championship. Day is coming off a T-10 finish in The Sentry two weeks ago to begin his 2024 season and he was T-18 in this event last season.  See who else to pick here .

Patrick mcdonald, who correctly called the 250-1 winner of the american express two years ago, has locked in his best bets for the 2024 american express.

The PGA Tour's West Coast Swing begins this week when 156 players tee off in the 2024 American Express beginning on Thursday at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. This week's tournament kicks off a five-week stretch that will be followed by stops in San Diego, Pebble Beach, Scottsdale and Los Angeles. The West Coast Swing is widely considered the unofficial start to the golf season. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 5 Xander Schauffele and No. 6 Patrick Cantlay are the highest-ranked players in the 2024 American Express field. 

Scheffler is the 11-2 favorite in the latest 2024 American Express odds. Cantlay (9-1), Schauffele (10-1), Sungjae Im (20-1) and Justin Thomas (20-1) round out the top five choices on the PGA odds board.
