11 Best Places To Visit In Araku Valley (+Vizag): A Hidden Gem

I went for a solo trip to this little-known hill station lying on the southeastern coast of India. As I hadn’t heard much about this place before, I didn’t have much expectation. However, after the trip, I realised how underappreciated this place was. 

It blew my mind how this scenic hill station hasn’t been covered or talked about much among the traveller community in India, even today. And hence, I would like to give you an introduction to Araku Valley, also known as the Ooty of Andhra Pradesh.

Famous for its international hot air balloon festival, world-famous Arabica coffee beans and the deepest caves in India, Araku Valley is a hill station in Andhra Pradesh that is criminally underrated in India. There’s so much more this place offers that’ll make you realize how you’ve never heard of this place before.

I travelled from Hyderabad to Araku Valley on my own. In this guide, I would like to tell you the 6 best places to visit in Araku Valley along with the 5 best places to visit in Vizag, if you plan to come for a 4-day trip. I have included Vizag as well as it is the starting point for Araku Valley.

Araku Valley is a hill station in the Eastern Ghats known for its tribal population, lush green forests and numerous waterfalls. Located in Andhra Pradesh and close to the border of Orissa, the nearest major city to Araku Valley is Vizag, lying 111 km away from it.

The best way to reach Araku Valley is to travel to Vizag before making way for Araku Valley. Hence, I recommend you explore Vizag as well before heading off to Araku Valley.

Vizag, also known as Visakhapatnam, is the largest city and the financial capital of Andhra Pradesh. It is a coastal town in Andhra Pradesh, primarily known for its beaches and museums. As such, it offers a different experience to Araku Valley making your trip more wholesome.

6 best places to visit in Araku Valley

I covered Vizag during my first two days before I went to Araku Valley. I have talked about the 5 best places to visit in Vizag in the next section.

For this section, I would like to tell you the 6 best places to visit in Araku Valley in chronological order as I drove from Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley. 

1. Borra Caves

I started my drive from Vizag at around 10 am. The drive was smooth as the roads were well-maintained and you’ll be passing through several villages en route to Araku Valley.

As you go further towards Araku Valley, you’ll be driving through mountain ranges and encountering hairpin bends as cool air starts surrounding you in no time.

My first destination was Borra Caves, which is a slight diversion from the road to Araku Valley.

Known for being one of the largest and deepest caves in India, Borra Caves is one of the most unique places to visit in Araku Valley.

This 150-million-year-old cave is filled with intriguing stalactite and stalagmite formations of limestone deposits. The caves were created due to the flow of the Gosthani river (which flows nearby) over the limestone area.

The cave was so deep that I spend close to an hour exploring it. There will be several places inside the cave where you may need to bend, crouch or maintain your head due to the irregular formations.

The different lights that are installed inside the cave further add to the ambience and bring out the best of the unique formations.

The only drawback to visiting Borra Caves is that you may find a lot of people inside the cave as it is highly commercialised. However, it is still worth visiting considering the visual delight you get inside the caves.

2. Katiki Waterfalls

While coming back from Borra Caves, take a diversion to go to Katiki Waterfalls, which is only 7 km away. You can visit other waterfalls like Anantagiri and Chaparai in Araku Valley but they pale in comparison to Katiki Waterfalls.

Katiki Waterfalls derives its name from the Katiki village and originates from the Gosthani river. This 50-feet high waterfall flows through a lush green forest and the water is clear and white in hue.

Apart from the falls, you’ll also enjoy the adventurous hike and the scenic beauty surrounding you while hiking the hill. When you reach the falls, you can also take a dip there to re-energise yourself.

You can’t use your vehicle to reach the falls. 

You need to hire a jeep to travel from the Katiki Falls ticket counter and it costs INR 1,500 for 8 members (rates may vary). The jeep covers 5 km of mountain roads till you reach a railway track near Tunnel #44. From here, you have to cross this track and trek 1.5 km further up the hill. 

This trek takes half an hour through a forest and the path is narrow and slippery. You’ll find several food kiosks on the way that serve snacks and beverages especially Bamboo Chicken and fresh Coconut Water. 

Don’t carry much luggage as the path is steep and uneven. Depending on your pace, it can take up to 2-3 hours for the entire experience. 

P.S. I couldn’t visit this amazing destination as I was short on time. But I assure you it will be one of your favourite places to visit in Araku Valley.

3. Araku Coffee Plantations/Galikonda View Point

As I continued my drive towards Araku Valley, I kept ascending the mountains. After driving for 45 minutes, you’ll be greeted by the Araku Valley coffee plantations. 

It starts on a stretch of road where you can stop your vehicle by the side and go for a short trek through the coffee plantations. There are also roadside stalls set up by locals where you can have coffee, and buy coffee powder and pepper.

As I’ve seen coffee plantations before, I decided to continue my journey and stopped my vehicle at Galikonda View Point, only 1.5 km ahead.

Galikonda is the second-highest mountain in the Eastern Ghats and the highest in Andhra Pradesh. From Galikonda View Point, you can get a panoramic view of the mountain ranges and green valleys covered in clouds.

Here too, you can find roadside stalls from where you can get coffee, sweet corn and bamboo chicken. 

If you’re a non-vegetarian, I highly recommend you try the bamboo chicken which is a local delicacy that is made by cooking chicken pieces inside a bamboo stem with spices.

Like Borra Caves, you’ll find many people who stop at Galikonda View Point for a break so be prepared for the crowd.

4. Araku Tribal Museum

From Galikonda View Point, Araku Valley is only half an hour. The ride to Araku Valley from here is a pleasant one.

You’ll be driving through a plateau with a wide expanse of land and mountains in the distant background. You’ll also find many resorts and camping tents on either side of the road.

The first stop I made at Araku Valley was the Araku Tribal Museum.

It was another highlight of the trip. 

The Araku Tribal Museum gives you a peek inside the lives of the 19 tribes that live in Araku Valley. The purpose of the museum is to create awareness about the tribal lifestyle and culture in Araku Valley.

You’ll find galleries depicting photos of tribal weddings, artefacts used by the tribals and the figurines of tribals interacting with each other in their day-to-day lives, among many things. 

Overall, the museum is well-maintained and everything has been sculpted and preserved beautifully. Hence, I suggest you spend at least an hour here to get a good understanding of tribal life.

The tribal dance called Dhimsa is performed at 5 pm inside the premises.

There are some shops as well from where you can buy chocolates, coffee and other local produce and other shops where you can get local handicrafts and ornaments.

There are additional activities inside the museum like rope cycling, boating, ziplining, etc., if you’re interested.

5. Araku Coffee Museum

If you’re a coffee-lover, you must visit the Araku Coffee Museum which is right next to the Araku Tribal Museum. 

This small museum describes the origin and history of coffee from Ethiopia to Europe and India via Chikmagalur , Nilgiri and Araku Valley. All of this information is depicted via photos, figurines and sculptures much like the Tribal Museum.

You can also taste and buy different types of Araku Valley coffee products like coffee beans, coffee powder and chocolates.

You’ll need a maximum of half an hour here to cover everything here.

Padmapuram Botanical Garden is the next stop in Araku Valley, 2 km from the Araku Tribal Museum.

Built in 1942 during World War 2, it was initially developed to supply fruits and vegetables to the soldiers. Today, it is a fully developed garden, host to a wide variety of trees, plants and flowers including a rose garden. 

Hence, it is a great place to walk around and relax especially after your long journey from Vizag.

You can also take the toy train inside the garden that gives you a tour of the botanical garden.

5 best places to visit in Vizag

Excluding Araku Valley, you’ll need two days to cover Vizag. In this section, let me take you through the 5 best places to visit in Vizag:

1. Rushikonda Beach

Rushikonda Beach is the most prominent beach in Vizag.

Located 30 km north of Vizag, Rushikonda Beach surrounds itself with hills and curves along the coastline of Vizag. It is a white sand beach with clean waters that has got international recognition for maintaining cleanliness standards.

If you’re into water sports, you can find plenty of activities here like a speed boat, jet skiing, surfing, scuba diving and paragliding.

There are plenty of food stalls as well near the beach. 

2. Kailasagiri Park

If you want to get a panoramic view of Vizag from a height and spend some time in nature, the Kailasagiri Park is your best bet.

Spread across 100 acres on a hilltop, the Kailasagiri Park has a huge garden full of different kinds of trees and plants, a toy train that takes you around the park and a food court as well.

The major attraction of Kailasagiri is the 40 feet tall statues of Shiva and Parvathi.

You can easily spend an hour here walking around the park and observing different viewpoints of the city and sea.

There are two ways to reach Kailasagiri Park. Either you can take your vehicle and ascend through the hairpin bends to reach the top.

Or you can take the cable car via ropeway that covers 700 metres in 5 minutes. You get a bird’s eye view of the city in the cable car. The only drawback is that you may need to wait in a queue, especially during the weekends.

You can board this cable car from the Ropeway Base Station at the bottom of the Kailasagiri Park.

3. Ramakrishna Beach

Ramakrishna Beach, also known as RK Beach, is the most prominent beach in Vizag after Rushikonda Beach. Located along the coastline of Vizag, this beach attracts a lot of crowds.

The beach is huge as it stretches across 3.7 km along a curve much like Marine Drive in Mumbai. But unlike the former, this beach is well-maintained with white sand and crystal clear waters.

There are lots of eateries and restaurants nearby where you’ll get plenty of street food. While you’re here, don’t forget to try the muri mixture which is a staple snack here.

4. INS Kurusura Submarine Museum/TU 142 Aircraft Museum

When you’re at Ramakrishna Beach, don’t forget to visit the INS Kurusura Submarine Museum and the TU 142 Aircraft Museum, which are near the beach.

The INS Kurusura Submarine Museum is the only Submarine Museum in Asia. INS Kurusura Submarine served the Indian Navy for over 30 years before being decommissioned on 27th February 2001.

This museum has artefacts, pictures and life-sized figurines that explain the workings of the submarine and how the officers inside the submarines lived their daily lives. Everything is explained in great detail and well-maintained, hence you’ll learn something new from touring the museum.

Similarly, you have the TU 142 Aircraft Museum right next to the INS Kurusura Submarine Museum. The TU 142 aircraft had a history of flying the Indian Navy for over 30,000 hours before it was decommissioned in 2017.

This aircraft showcases an array of aeronautical equipment like a survival kit, engine, data recorder, propeller, anti-submarine missiles and sonobuoys.

Overall, you’ll need at least an hour in total for both the museums and by the end of it, you’d have learnt a great deal about the life of an Indian Navy officer and both the machines. As such, don’t miss this experience when you’re in Vizag!

Yarada Beach is one of the lesser-known beaches located at a distance of 15 km south of Vizag. It surrounds itself with the sea on one side and hills on the other side which gives it a different feel compared to the Ramakrishna Beach.

Being at a remote village, you’ll find lesser crowds here as compared to Ramakrishna Beach. The drive to Yarada Beach is another highlight as you’ll be passing through a hill and some villages to get here.

Located 5 km from Yarada Beach is the Dolphin’s Nose which is a hill that represents the shape of a dolphin’s nose. Make sure you visit this hill as well as it gives you a panoramic view of the sea and the Vizag shipyard. 

Visit the Dolphin’s Nose Lighthouse (at the hill) for the best view from the top. The timings are from 9 am-11 am and 3 pm-5 pm. 

You can visit Yarada Beach and Dolphin’s Nose in the evening to watch the spectacular sunset. 

How to reach Vizag and Araku Valley?

The Vizag airport is well-connected to major cities of India like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Hence, you can easily book a flight to Vizag if you’re coming from a far-off place.

By train 

Much like Vizag airport, the Vizag railway station is also well-connected to major cities of India and has frequent trains plying from New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata, among others.

If you’re coming from within Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, you can get plenty of private and government buses to Vizag. However, if you’re coming from outside Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, it is preferable to take a flight or a train because the journey by bus will be a tiring one.

2. How to reach Araku Valley?

Araku Valley doesn’t have an airport. The nearest airport to Araku Valley is the Vizag airport, at a distance of 115 km. From the airport, you can easily hire a cab for Araku Valley. 

One of the best ways things to do in Araku Valley is to take the Vistadome train (Train No. 18551) from Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley. 

The Vistadome train is a special type of train with a glass ceiling, expansive windows and modern facilities. Hence, you get an immersive experience while travelling through the hills and valleys of the Eastern Ghats.

The train starts at 6:45 am from Vizag and reach Araku Valley by 10:55 am. There is also a stop at Borra Caves (before Araku Valley) which is at 9:40 am.

Similarly, you can also book your return train (Train No. 18552) from Araku Valley to Vizag. You can book these trains from the  IRCTC website .

You can find frequent buses from Vizag to Araku Valley. However, it is always preferable to book a cab from Vizag because the journey from Vizag to Araku Valley should not be missed at any cost. You can book a cab provided by your hotel or book a self-driving car from  Zoomcar  in Vizag.

Best places to stay in Vizag and Araku Valley

Being a major city, you can find different kinds of stay options at Vizag. I stayed at a small hotel along the streets of Vizag but if you want the best experience, I recommend you stay at one of the hotels near the beaches.

For example, you can find plenty of sea-facing hotels and resorts suiting different budgets along Ramakrishna Beach.

If you’re an adventurous soul, you can stay at one of the many campsites that you’ll come across in Araku Valley. You can find these campsites while you enter Araku Valley.  Camp Fever  is one such campsite that has good ratings and reviews. 

If you’re looking for resorts and hotels in Araku Valley, you can stay at  Haritha Jungle Bells Resort . It is an eco-resort inside a jungle managed by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) and lies in Tyda, 40 km before Araku Valley.  

The good thing about its location is that Borra Caves, Katiki Waterfalls and Araku Coffee Plantations/Galikonda View Point are all nearby, which are all important places to visit in Araku Valley. You can cover these places together and on the next day, you can drive to Araku Valley, cover the remaining places and come back to Vizag.

You can find plenty of such resorts in Araku Valley.

Best time to visit Araku Valley (and Vizag)

September to March is the best time to visit Araku Valley and Vizag. 

The months of September and October are ideal if you want to experience greenery in Araku Valley. 

If you want to experience the winter season, November to early March is perfect.

The next day, you can cover the remaining places within Araku Valley like the Araku Tribal Museum, Araku Coffee Museum and Padmapuram Botanical Garden before returning to Vizag the same day.

So in total, keep aside four days to visit Araku Valley along with Vizag so that you have a relaxed trip.

It completely depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to experience Araku Valley at its greenest, September and October are the best months to visit. 

Similarly, December and January are the best months to visit to experience the winter season at Araku Valley. January can be a better month as compared to December as you’ll face lesser crowds.

If you’re someone who likes covering offbeat destinations in India, Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh is one place that should be on the top of your list.

Lush green valleys, coffee plantations, majestic waterfalls, deep caves and local tribes make Araku Valley a unique hill station along the east coast of India. Although it is known as the Ooty of Andhra, I rate it higher than Ooty as it is much less commercialised than the former.

Situated in Anantagiri hills of Andhra Pradesh, the caves are situated at an altitude of 1400 m and occupy an area of 2 sq.km. Borra Caves is one of the best places to visit in Araku Valley as part of Vizag packages . These natural caves were discovered in 1807 by William King George of the Geological Survey of India. According to locals, once a cowherd lost his cow while grazing. He soon realized that his cow had fallen down. While searching for the cow, the cowherd found these caves and came across a Linga inside it. The Linga is considered synonymous to Lord Shiva, who saved the cow. After this, a small Shiva temple was built right outside this cave. The caves are filled with fascinating stalagmite and stalactite .....

Araku Tribal Museum is spread over two levels, built with mud and real metals to portray tribal life. The museum has been designed to showcase tribal lifestyle in motion, starting with a kitchen that displays utensils made of iron and mud. A series of 10 photographs capturing the wedding ceremony of the tribal is very interesting at the entrance. The passages within the museum that connect various sections are constructed of mud .....

Katiki / Katika Waterfalls

At a distance of 7 km from Borra Caves, 39 km from Araku, 90 km from Vizag & 665 km from Hyderabad, Katiki or Katika Waterfall is magnificent waterfall situated near Borra Caves in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the best waterfalls in Araku and also among the top places to visit in Araku. The name of the falls is derived from the name of the village nearby. Katiki waterfall is formed by the Gosthani River and it cascading down from a height of 100+ feet. At a distance of 2.5 km from Araku Bus Station, Padmapuram Gardens is a popular botanical garden situated in Araku. It is one of the well-known places of sightseeing in Araku Valley. The garden was built in 1942 on a 26-acre plot to supply vegetables to the soldiers who fought in World War II. After the War, it was converted into a Horticultural Nursery cum Training Center where orchards, rare species of flowers and trees, tree houses and stone sculptures greet the eye. A pleasurable way of seeing the gardens is to get on to the Araku Express toy train, popular with visitors to the gardens. Along with the toy train, the garden also contains tree top huts, which can be booked by the tourists. These tree huts, also known as hanging cottages, are ten feet above the ground level. It is a thrilling experience to stay in a hanging cottage and one can experience a rare swing as the tree sways to a heavy breeze. The best way to reach these waterfalls is by walking / trekking from Anantagiri. The falls is about 1-2 km away from the main road between Anantagiri and Araku Valley (after about 1.5 km from Anantagiri). The approach road from main road is very narrow and bumpy. Only SUVs can manage well on this road. It's advisable to walk to these falls from Anantagiri - Araku main road which takes about 20 minutes. Mastyagundam

At a distance of 35 Kms from Araku Valley , Masthyagundam, also called as 'fish pool' is an interesting pool on the Machkund River near the village of Matham (15 kms from Paderu) A barrier of rocks runs right across the river and the stream plunges into a great hole and vanishes beneath this to reappear again at about 100 yards lower down. Just where it emerges under the barrier, it forms a pool which is crowded with fish of all sizes. Now, steps have been formed and one can straight go up to the pool. These are wonderfully tame and feed fearlessly from one's hand. They even let you pat their backs. Here, the tribal and other people venerate the fish. There is a small Siva temple on the bank of the river.

Duduma Waterfalls

At a distance of 70 Kms from Araku , Duduma Falls (also known as Matsya Tirtha) on Machkund River is located in Orissa state close to Munchingiputtu village of Visakhapatnam District. With a height of 520 feet, this is one of the most popular waterfalls in Orissa state. The tourism department has started focusing on this destination and can see some facilities here going forward. Nearby Jalaput Dam on Machkund River offers spectacular views.

Araku Waterfalls / Ranajilleda Falls

At a distance of about 3 km from Padmapuram Gardens and 6 km from Araku Bus station, Araku Waterfalls, also known as Ranajilleda falls is lovely and little known waterfalls situated near Ranajilleda Village near Araku. At a height of over 60 feet, Araku Waterfalls is one of the best waterfalls in Araku Valley. Named after Ranajilleda village, this falls is located on mountain peak and about 10-15 minutes trekking is required to reach the falls from nearest motorable road. To reach the falls, one has to drive straight from Padmapuram Gardens till Ranajilleda village from where the falls can be reached by trekking the summit. Best time to visit these falls is the post monsoon season.

Araku Valley the “Queen of Hills” is a picturesque hill station located in Andhra Pradesh, better known for its natural beauty, lush green landscapes, coffee plantations, and pleasant climate. It is situated in the Eastern Ghats mountain range and is popular with tourists, especially people seeking a peaceful getaway from nearby coastal cities like Visakhapatnam which is hot and humid.

The picturesque hill station, renowned for its lush greenery, tribal heritage, and coffee plantations, beckons travelers to experience a rejuvenating escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Araku Valley altitude from sea level

Situated at an altitude of approximately 910 meters (2985 feet) above sea level. This elevation contributes to its pleasant climate and picturesque landscapes.

Hills and mountains surrounding Araku Valley

• Chaparai : 15 KM from Araku it is a perennial stream gushing through the natural rocks. A beautiful sight and landscape.
• Matsyagundam : About 50 KM from Araku, here is a rivulet passing through rock boulders in the backdrop of a Shiva Temple.
• Honey Making : Learn how the locals have successfully adopted modern honey-making techniques.
• Shimliguda Railway Station : 15 KM from Araku, it is the highest broad gauge railway station in India at 996 meters above the mean sea level. It is en route the Train ride to Araku from Vizag.
• Spices : The region grows a few spices. You can visit the gardens, see/taste a final sample, and buy them there.
• Bamboo Chicken : A tribal delicacy and only they can legally prepare this dish. Taste it if you are a non-vegetarian.
• Dumbriguda Waterfall : One of the widely visited waterfalls in the v alley. Located about 15 km away and falls right on the way to Paderu. An attraction owing to its endless streams that graciously cascade across big rock formations. It is also known as Chaparai Waterfall .
• Villages : Some villages better known for their skill are Madagada for Potteries (8 KM away), Chompi for Lac products (5 KM away), and Mushiriguda for Bamboo products (10 KM away from Araku).
• Modamamba Temple : About 46 KM from Araku in Hukumpet, a well-known worship place for the native tribes.

Borra Caves, Araku Valley

Borra Caves, a natural wonder formed from millions of years of geological activity, captivate visitors with their intricate formations. The caves are adorned with awe-inspiring stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique structures. Inside, visitors can explore various chambers and galleries that unveil the artistry of nature. The dimly lit interiors add an air of mystery and intrigue to the experience, making it an excellent spot for both scientific exploration and visual delight.

Train Ride to Araku Valley

Araku can be reached from Visakhapatnam by a morning train that takes you through a series of tunnels. You travel through the valley on one side and hillocks on the other. This East Coast rail link was built in 1958 by HCC through an Indo-Japan collaboration.

Katiki Waterfalls, Araku Valley

Katiki Waterfalls, hidden within a dense forest, is a serene spot that rejuvenates the senses. Cascading river Gosthani from a height amidst lush greenery, the falls create a soothing ambiance, offering a perfect setting for relaxation and contemplation. The approach to the waterfall involves a trek through the forest, adding an element of adventure to the visit. The natural beauty and tranquility of Katiki Waterfalls make it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts.

Paderu Coffee Plantations

3000 ft above mean sea level Paderu is known for Coffe Plantations. Paderu is a bit far and in a different direction. Araku Valley’s coffee plantations are a treat for those with a penchant for aromatic beverages. You can have an opportunity to witness the entire coffee-making process, from cultivation to roasting. Guided tours take you through verdant coffee estates, where you can learn about the different varieties of coffee beans, the harvesting process, and the art of brewing. Sampling freshly brewed coffee in the midst of these plantations is an experience that tantalizes both the taste buds and the senses.

You will find Coffee Plantations all along the road trip in the valley. Paderu is about 45 KM from the Tribal Museum and 120 KM from Vizag, but not on the way to Araku.

Araku Coffee Museum

Bang opposite the Tribal Museum in Araku town a board atop a tribal wrought iron gate says ‘Araku Valley Coffee House’. The subtext says – Coffee Beverages, Powder, Chocolates, and accessories. Sampoorna gallery which is like a small museum. Showcasing the birth of Coffee in Ethiopia and its journey all the way to this valley.

Araku Tribal Museum

The Tribal Museum here provides an insight into the rich culture, traditions, and artistry of the indigenous tribes that call the region home. The museum exhibits artifacts, clothing, tools, and artwork representative of the tribal way of life. It offers an opportunity to learn about their rituals, beliefs, and practices, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultural heritage of the area.

Padmapuram Gardens

Padmapuram Gardens offer a serene escape into a world of vibrant flora and calming greenery. It features a variety of flowers, plants, and trees, including several rare species. The toy train ride in the gardens is fun, making it an enjoyable experience for children and families. Well-maintained pathways and chirping bird sounds create an atmosphere of tranquility.

Ananthagiri Hills

Staying in the resorts/hotels on the hills provides pleasant weather, a breeze, beautiful landscape views, and calmness which you miss in our bustling cities. An opportunity for trekking enthusiasts to explore scenic landscapes and lush forests. They are dotted with viewpoints that offer breathtaking panoramic vistas of the surrounding valleys and hills. Peaceful ambiance and invigorating air make Ananthagiri Hills an ideal spot for nature walks, birdwatching, and meditation.

Honey Making

En route to the valley, you will find several blue boxes by the roadside fields. They are the Honey making mini biofactories. An income-generating side business for the local farmers. We purchased a bottle of the nectar that was on sale right there. I was happy to learn about another small business that can be done in a very eco-friendly way without much investment. You can see along the roadside Pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon being cultivated. These spices thrive in the area’s climatic conditions. Plan a visit to one of these farms if you are interested.

Bamboo Chicken

The Bamboo Chicken tribal delicacy of the valley is a traditional delicious chicken recipe hidden in its regional cuisine. Please note only the tribals can cut and use bamboo for their traditional cooking practices. You will find a few tribal carts live cooking and selling it. One may have to wait for a while as it is a slow cooking process. You may order beforehand while visiting a nearby tourist attraction and pick it up or savor it on the way back. Dumbriguda Waterfall / Chaparai Waterfall

15 KM away from the town, one of the widely visited waterfalls is right on the way to Paderu. Water streams cascade across big rock formations. It is also known as Chaparai Waterfall . Downstream is a perennial stream gushing through the natural rocks. A beautiful sight and landscape. Be careful while approaching the flowing water, potentially slippery rocky surfaces can be dangerous.

Mode of Transportation: Accessible by various modes of transportation

• Road: The valley can be reached by road from cities like Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram. The journey by road offers scenic views of the Eastern Ghats.
• Train: The Araku Valley Express, known for its breathtaking journey, connects Visakhapatnam to Araku. The train passes through tunnels, bridges, and picturesque landscapes, offering an unforgettable experience.
• Air: The nearest airport is Visakhapatnam International Airport, from where visitors can take a road journey to Araku Valley.

Safety Precautions:

While Araku Valley is a safe destination, it’s advisable to keep a few precautions in mind like

• Weather preparedness
• Local customs: When interacting with indigenous tribal communities, it’s important to respect their traditions and customs.
• Wildlife and Nature: Be cautious of local wildlife and maintain a safe distance.
• Healthcare: Carry basic medications and first aid essentials, as medical facilities might be limited.

Culinary Experiences

You can indulge in a variety of dishes that reflect the local culture and ingredients. They are generally on the spicier side. Besides the Bamboo Chicken, Coffee, and coffee Chocolates already described above, here are some food choices for you:

• Pachi Pulusu : Tangy and flavorful dish made from tamarind, green chilies, and other spices. Typically enjoyed with steamed rice and is known for its refreshing taste.
• Ragi Sangati : Nutritious millet, is used to make a staple called “Sangati.” Often served with a variety of curries and chutneys. Healthy and a local favorite.
• Bongulo Chicken : Features chicken cooked with aromatic spices, onions, and tomatoes. A rich and flavorful curry that pairs well with both rice and Indian bread.

Some accommodations and local eateries might offer traditional tribal dishes prepared by the indigenous communities.

Best Time to Visit:

The climate in Araku Valley is pleasant throughout the year, making it a year-round destination. However, the ideal time to visit is during the months of October to March, when the weather is cool and comfortable.

The valley experiences a subtropical highland climate due to its elevation in the Eastern Ghats. The temperature remains moderate, and the air is crisp and refreshing.

Winter (October to February)

Best time to visit Araku Valley. The weather is cool and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). Comfortable atmosphere for sightseeing, outdoor activities, and exploring the attractions without the discomfort of heat.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is also a good time to visit, as the weather remains pleasant, although it gradually warms up. Temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Ideal for those who prefer slightly warmer weather and want to witness the blooming of flowers and foliage.

Monsoon (June to September)

A drive of about 115 kilometers from Vizag also known as Visakhapatnam , the Financial capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh takes you to Araku Valley which nestles snuggly in the midst of the mountain ranges of the Eastern Ghats. A picturesque place high up in the hills, there are many interesting places to see in Araku apart from the natural beauty that envelops you from all sides.

When we were in Araku to attend the annual convention of ATOAI organized in conjunction with Andhra Pradesh Tourism , we used to wake up to misty mornings that slowly unveiled the panoramic surroundings as the sunlight breached the mist.

The Araku Valley is being developed as a center for adventure tourism. During our stay, we reveled in the magic of Hot air ballooning and soared above the valley in a Para Motor. Araku Valley is an enchanting getaway from the urban center of Vizag and offers many experiences.

There are many interesting places to see in Araku itself as well as the surrounding regions. The main highlights are of course two unique museums. We love to visit museums as they offer a window to the region’s history and culture. We love visiting museums across the world, be it the National Museum in Phnom Penh , the museums of Paris , the heritage museum of Wayanad, or the unique Transport Museum in Delhi.

Immerse Yourself In Coffee At The Coffee Museum

One of the most interesting places to see in Araku is the Coffee Museum. The museum is located at a stone’s throw away from the Araku bus stand. It is a museum that is dedicated to the history and science of Coffee.

As soon as you step inside the museum premises, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee envelops you and emphasizes the fact that you are at the Coffee Museum! The museum is a celebration and an ode to the wonders of coffee. The Araku valley is known for the fine quality of Arabica coffee that is grown here. It is one of the few places in India where the Arabica variety of Coffee is grown as opposed to the more widely prevalent variety of Robusta.

The Museum is definitely one of the best places to visit in Araku, especially for connoisseurs of coffee. The Coffeehouse in the museum brews some of the most exotic blends of coffee.

Apart from coffee one can also dig into some incredible coffee chocolates apart from mousses and tarts. Different variants of coffee including the renowned Luwak coffee is available in the coffee shop.

But what makes the Coffee museum one of the most interesting places to visit in Araku is the Museum gallery known as Sampoorna Coffee Gallery. This is the place where one gets answers to everything about coffee. The artistically designed dioramas in the gallery document the history of coffee right from its discovery in faraway Ethiopia to its blooming in the Araku valley. A captivating AV about Coffee made by the famed cinematographer Santosh Sivan plays in the gallery and makes for an interesting watch too.

The museum has a store that sells 60 different types of Coffee and about 600 varieties of chocolates apart from a host of other goodies.

The garden inside the museum premises is ornamented with interesting coffee iconography.

We left the Coffee Museum Araku with the lingering taste of freshly brewed coffee in our mouths and the exhilarating aroma of coffee in our nostrils.

Take A Peep Into The Tribal Way of Life At The Tribal Museum

Just opposite to the Coffee museum in Araku lies one of the top tourist places to visit in Araku, the Tribal Museum Araku.

The Tribal Museum showcases the interesting and vibrant tribal culture of the tribes that inhabit the Eastern Ghats.

The museum is spread over a large area.

It incorporates the main gallery, shopping arcade as well as a man-made lake where paddle boating can be done.

The museum itself is designed in the tribal style of architecture and depicts the life of the tribals, their dresses, houses, weddings, jewelry, kitchens and much more.

Apart from the indoor exhibits which make use of life-size models and recreates scenes from the tribal way of life, there are many interesting outdoor exhibits as well.

One of the interesting outdoor exhibits is a group of statues depicting the Dimsa dance form. Dimsa is a famous tribal dance of the region and is performed by women during weddings and other festivals.

The Padmapura Gardens is another one of the tourist places to visit in Araku. The garden houses different rare and exotic plants and trees. The garden also has a toy train which gives a tour of the garden.

Araku Valley Waterfalls – Chaparai Waterfalls

This is a picnic spot and one of the favorite places to visit in Araku for families. The falls are more like a water slide as the water cascades down a rocky incline. Families can be seen cavorting in the water and having a great time.

• The Araku railway station is quite near the town center
• Araku to Vizag bus services  are available from the center of Araku town
• It is possible to incorporate a one day tour of Araku & Borra Caves
• Many Vizag tours offer a day tour to Araku Valley by train which covers Araku Valley Borra caves and other sights
• The Araku Valley weather is pleasant throughout the year however in summer the heat in Vizag is severe while in Araku valley temperatures are moderate

When you visit Padmapuram Gardens, don’t forget to look at the hanging cottages, which constitute a striking feature of the garden. Such cottages have a height of 10 feet, and they contain toilets.

Plus, they also have a continuous water supply. Apart from staying in hanging cottages, you can also experience the joy of riding a toy train around the botanical garden. The ticket cost for each adult is INR 20, and for a child, it is INR 10.

If you are an ardent coffee lover, you must visit the Coffee Museum while travelling to Araku Valley. It was set up in 1930 to showcase the aspects that make Arabica Coffee a unique brew. There is also a coffee house attached to it. Initially, only foreign delegates had access to it. But now, all visitors can enter it.

Mount Fuji view to be blocked as tourists overcrowd popular photo spot

Fujikawaguchiko town official says choice to erect huge barrier is ‘regrettable’ and last resort

A huge barrier to block views of Mount Fuji will be installed at a popular photo spot by Japanese authorities exasperated by crowds of badly behaved foreign tourists.

Construction of the mesh net – 2.5 metres (8ft) high and the length of a cricket pitch at 20 metres – will begin as early as next week, an official from Fujikawaguchiko town said on Friday.

“It’s regrettable we have to do this, because of some tourists who can’t respect rules,” leaving litter behind and ignoring traffic regulations, he told Agence France-Presse.

It is the latest direct action in Japan against over-tourism after residents of Kyoto’s geisha district banned visitors from small private alleys this year.

Record numbers of overseas tourists are travelling to Japan, where the number of monthly visitors exceeded 3 million in March for the first time.

Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, can be photographed from many spots in the resort town of Fujikawaguchiko. This viewpoint is particularly popular because the majestic – and active – volcano appears behind a Lawson convenience store, which are ubiquitous in Japan.

Due to this visual juxtaposition, “a reputation has spread on social media that this spot is very Japanese, making it a popular photo location”, said the town official, who declined to be named.

The mostly non-Japanese tourists are overcrowding a stretch of pavement next to the Lawson shop, he said.

After traffic signs and repeated warnings from security guards were ignored, the town in Yamanashi region decided on the huge screen as a last resort.

The measure is also meant to protect a nearby dental clinic against tourists who sometimes park there without permission and have even been seen climbing on to the roof of the clinic to get the perfect shot, the official said.

The town wished it had not been forced to take action, the official said, adding that the current plan was for the screen to stay up until the situation improves.

Japan has been a booming tourist destination since pandemic-era border restrictions were lifted, and the government has been working hard to boost visitor numbers. But this has not been universally welcomed, including in Kyoto, where people have complained of snap-happy tourists harassing the city’s immaculately dressed geisha.

This summer, hikers using the most popular route to climb Mount Fuji will be charged ¥2,000 each (£10.50, $13.35, A$20.50), with numbers capped to ease congestion.

Other destinations are also struggling with over-tourism. On Thursday, Venice began charging day-trippers to enter the city, while last week tens of thousands of people across the Canary Islands called for a freeze on visitor numbers .

Tribal Museum, Araku Valley Overview

Opened in 1996 by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, the Araku Tribal Museum depicts the tribal culture of Andhra Pradesh. From utensils, jewellery, hunting tools to wedding photographs, the museum gives a taste of what traditional tribal lives look like.

Located at a distance of just 200 metres from the Araku bus station, the museum is not historical but has been constructed to enlighten people about the tribal way of life, with the display of the lifestyle of about 19 tribes living in the vicinity. While tribal artworks adorn the walls, local Mayur and Dhimsa dances are exhibited at one of the sections on the museum. Interestingly, the museum is home to a fortune teller with a parrot who speaks only the local language and whose predictions are believed to have been right. One can also go boating in the pond nearby or relax by cycling around the museum. The two-storied building is an excellent place to get souvenirs; the money for which goes to the locals as one of their sources of employment.
