Top 10 players from 2022 Asian Development Tour Order of Merit to earn cards for next year's Asian Tour

asian tour adt

The top 10 players from this year's Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit (OOM) will earn their cards for the Asian Tour next year, an increase of three from previous years.

“Providing playing opportunities for our members, along with a viable career pathway, has always been high on the list of our priorities,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour.

Previously, the leading seven players, not otherwise exempted, on the final ADT Order of Merit were awarded Asian Tour playing rights for the following season.

Cho added: “In recent years, the ADT has been a springboard to the Asian Tour for dozens of players, including reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Joohyung Kim of Korea and American John Catlin, a four-time winner on the Asian Tour.

“With 10 spots now on offer to the 2023 Asian Tour directly via the ADT, there will be added incentive for all our ADT players to work even harder at their games in the coming months.”

The increase in number of cards was initiated by the Tournament Players Committee to fairly reward more players competing across a full season on the ADT.

The ADT staged its 11th event of the season when it visited Vietnam for the first time in this week's BRG Open Golf Championship at BRG Da Nang Golf Resort, won by China's Chen Guxin.

The tour will head to Indonesia for the OB Golf Invitational presented by Jababeka (September 13-16), followed by the Combiphar Players Championship (September 20-23), before the inaugural Saudi Open (December 8-10). Announcements regarding more tournaments for the 2022 season are expected in due course.

ASIAN DEVELOPMENT TOUR EXPANDS TO INCLUDE SAUDI OPEN

In Golf News by Rob Spellman August 30, 2022

asian tour adt

New ground will be broken this year when the Asian Development Tour (ADT) visits Saudi Arabia for the first time. Boasting a prize fund of US$75,000, Golf Saudi-managed Riyadh Golf Club will play host to the inaugural Saudi Open from December 8-10. As well as highlighting the ADT’s rapid expansion this year, the event is a further sign of the strengthening of ties between the Asian Tour and Golf Saudi.

Last year, Golf Saudi entered a 10-year partnership with the Asian Tour. As a result of that alignment, the US$5 million PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers has become the opening event on the Asian Tour’s annual calendar.

Majed Al Sorour, the Chief Executive Officer of Golf Saudi’s Deputy Chairman, said: “We’re delighted to extend and deepen our ties with the Asian Tour, a key strategic partner for us. We’re especially pleased that Riyadh Golf Club will be the venue for the Saudi Open on the Asian Development Tour.”

Managed by Golf Saudi and playing to a par of 72, the Riyadh Golf Club is 20 minutes from Riyadh city center. The course, opened in 2005, is characterized by undulating terrain, wide fairways, and manicured greens.

Al Sorour continued: “Riyadh Golf Club is the go-to recreational and social getaway from the capital. The club provides a fun and exciting golf experience for beginners to established players, whether men, women, or children. Golf Saudi facilitates uptake and participation in golf through the delivery of world-class facilities, operational excellence, and the implementation of industry best practice to position the Kingdom as an exceptional golfing nation.

“Combined with grassroots training and educational programs that introduce people to the game at the earliest opportunity and with the greatest ease, Golf Saudi is committed to delivering a dynamic national development program that transforms the golfing landscape.”

Of the Saudi Open joining the ADT schedule,  Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour , said: “Providing playing opportunities for our members has always been a prime objective for us. I’m delighted, therefore, that we can further bolster the ADT schedule this year by adding the Saudi Open.”

The ADT staged its 10 th  event of the season at the weekend, the BNI Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament in Indonesia. Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai took the title in a nail-biting finish that saw his compatriot Chonlatit Chuenboonngam tie for second and keep the lead on the ADT’s Order of Merit standings.

The ADT visits Vietnam this week for the first time in its 12-year history for the BRG Open Golf Championship at BRG Da Nang Golf Resort, from August 31 – September 2.

The ADT has been a springboard to the Asian Tour for dozens of players, including reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Joohyung Kim of Korea and American John Catlin, a four-time winner on the Asian Tour.

Pro Tours announce strategic partnership in Asia

ADT and MENA Tour's join hands for a better future

ADT and MENA Tour’s join hands for a better future

The Asian Tour has announced a strategic partnership with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Tour, which will help facilitate the formation of one of the most comprehensive and innovative development tours in the modern game.

The new alliance will see the Asian Tour’s popular tier-two circuit, the Asian Development Tour (ADT), align with the MENA Tour – with the ultimate goal of merging in 2023.

2022 will be a season of transition with the intention to stage a number of ADT and MENA Tour co-sanctioned tournaments before the end of Q2, which will provide equal playing opportunities to both sets of Members.

In 2023 the ADT and MENA Tour will then unify to become a single and formidable platform from which players can graduate to the main Tour. Competitors will be able to access the new development tour through the Asian Tour Qualifying School.

“We want to create an amplified pan-Asian development pathway by 2023 feeding directly into the Asian Tour,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“The Asian Development Tour has always been an intrinsic part of our ecosystem and this new partnership with our friends at the MENA Tour is a forward-thinking statement of intent to build a combined property for the betterment of professional golf across the length and breadth of our region.”

The Asian Development Tour is hoping to stage 10-12 events in 2022 ‒ an important number of these with the MENA Tour. Dialogue and strategic planning will now continue at pace with the objective to optimise opportunities for all players and where possible try to minimise the amount of travel between tournaments to make it cost effective and safer for competitors.

The Asian Tour recently also announced its $200mn deal with LIV Golf Investments, headed by former World No.1 Greg Norman and backed by Saudi Golf.

Asian Tour and MENA Tour form strategic partnership with aim of full merger in 2023

asian tour adt

The Asian Tour confirmed today they have entered a strategic partnership with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Tour which will help facilitate the formation of one of the most comprehensive and innovative development tours in the modern game.

Based on a collective desire to consolidate their respective platforms, this new alliance will see the Asian Tour’s popular tier-two circuit, the Asian Development Tour (ADT), align with the MENA Tour ‒ with the ultimate goal of merging in 2023.

Next year will be a season of transition with the intention to stage a number of ADT and MENA Tour co-sanctioned tournaments before the end of Q2, which will provide equal playing opportunities to both sets of Members.

And, in 2023 the ADT and MENA Tour will then unify to become a single and formidable platform from which players can graduate to the main Tour.

Earlier in the year both Tours announced plans to increase dialogue on ways of working together but as tournament golf in the region has slowly started to return, they felt the time was right to accelerate their co-operative plans.

“This is the most significant development for the MENA Tour since its inception in 2011,” said David Spencer, Commissioner, MENA Tour.

“As the only Official World Golf Ranking Tour based in the Middle East our goal has always been to encourage, identify and nurture talent from all corners of the world to experience golf in the region which we are so proud of. We have worked closely with the Asian Tour, Cho Minn Thant and his team to create an alliance that underpins a unique and strong pathway for our members. We are intensely proud of our new alliance with the Asian Tour, and I look forward to seeing it flourish over the coming years.”

The Asian Development Tour is hoping to stage 10-12 events in 2022 ‒ an important number of these with the MENA Tour. Dialogue and strategic planning will now continue at pace with the objective to optimise opportunities for all players and where possible try to minimise the amount of travel between tournaments to make it cost-effective and safer for competitors.

The Asian Tour restarted last month with back-to-back events in Phuket which saw invitations to MENA Tour members at the Blue Canyon Phuket Championship and Laguna Phuket Championship.

Further invitations have been extended to MENA Tour members for next month’s The Singapore International ‒ the penultimate event of the 2020-21 season.

Asian Tour card secured, golfer Yuvraj Singh Sandhu targets bigger goals

Yuvraj singh sandhu finished inside top-10 in the asian development tour’s order of merit to take a key step towards winning in the continental tour and beyond.

Early this month, Yuvraj Singh Sandhu carded 9-under in the Aramco Invitational at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Riyadh to finish tied 11th. While the result doesn’t scream for attention, it marked an important step in the golfer's career. By virtue of that performance, Sandhu finished eighth on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit to earn his maiden Asian Tour card.

The Chandigarh golfer has been making the right noises in the domestic circuit for a few years

It is the 26-year-old Sandhu's “first major step” towards realising his long-standing goal – competing in the majors. Making the cut for the Asian Tour was one of the targets Sandhu had set for himself at the start of the year and the sense of achievement was apparent.

“I have always dreamt of competing in the majors and winning trophies at the international level. This marks the first big step towards my larger goals. I am elated and proud,” he said.

The Chandigarh golfer has been making the right noises in the domestic circuit for a few years. Having turned professional in 2018, he showed the first signs of his talent in 2019 when he won on the PGTI Feeder Tour twice and secured three other top-10 finishes. In the Covid-marred 2020-21 PGTI season, Sandhu claimed 12 top-10s, but it was only last year that he broke through. Sandhu won five PGTI titles in 2022, equalling the record of domestic stalwart Ashok Kumar.

“It was a great year and it gave me confidence to achieve bigger things this year. I was determined to get the Asian Tour card,” he said. That meant Sandhu had to forgo the comfort of domestic tournaments and test himself in the Asian Development Tour (ADT). No Indian had earned the Asian Tour card through the ADT route. There was, however, a small matter of dealing with bad form.

“I didn't have a great start to the year. My rhythm was a bit off and I feel I was playing a little too frequently. My fitness was not great either,” he recalled.

Sandhu’s best result in the first four months of the year was a T-21 at the PGTI Players Championship on his home course. He took a two-and-a-half month break from mid-May to redraw his plans. Together with his coach Jesse Grewal, Sandhu went about tightening his game.

“Technique-wise I was fine, but my fitness needed some work. I spent a lot of time in the gym. Me and my coach also worked on my schedule and we decided that I will have to play week after week, my fitness ought to be up to scratch.”

Sandhu returned to the circuit reinvigorated and hungry. After finishing T-8 at The Indonesia Pro-Am in August, he got his maiden international win at BNI Ciputra Golfpreneur tournament. “That was when I truly believed that getting the Asian Tour card was a real possibility. I always wanted an international win under my belt and to finally get one after turning around an ordinary season was superb,” he said.

The Asian Tour card means that Sandhu, who has competed in 17 tournaments this year, will regularly tee off in quality fields next year. “I would like to get some international wins under my belt and accumulate some vital ranking points. All of that will come in handy when time comes to select the team for the Paris Olympics,” he said.

It is easier said than done as his compatriot Manu Gandas found out this year. A 2022 PGTI Order of Merit leader, Gandas transitioned to the DP World Tour but failed to make a mark and couldn’t retain his European Tour card. “I don’t think it will be an easy year, but I’ll be ready for the challenge,” he said.

ASIA Announces 'The Heat Of The Moment' July 2024 U.S. Tour

ASIA has announced "The Heat of The Moment Tour" , headlined by ASIA and also featuring FOCUS , Martin Turner (ex- WISHBONE ASH ) and CURVED AIR and MC'd by artist Roger Dean .

The trek will commence on July 3, 2024 and will incorporate 21 dates across the USA and Canada.

The tour has been masterminded by rock music keyboard legend and original ASIA member Geoff Downes ( BUGGLES , YES ).

"Asia" was the biggest selling album of 1982, No. 1 on Billboard for nine weeks and pioneers of the MTV era. Downes 's brand new iteration of ASIA first began to evolve last summer at the concert held in memory of late lead singer, songwriter and bassist John Wetton ( KING CRIMSON , ROXY MUSIC , URIAH HEEP , WISHBONE ASH , UK , ASIA , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ). Downes invited old friend John Mitchell ( IT BITES , FROST, LONELY ROBOT , KINO , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ) and newcomer Harry Whitley to join him on stage to celebrate Wetton 's life by performing some of the classic ASIA hits. Such was the uproarious reception to their set, that Downes wondered if something magical was beginning to take shape.

"And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much ASIA 's music belongs on the stage," Geoff said. "The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling."

Downes 's new-look ASIA will once again feature Mitchell on guitars and Whitley on lead vocal and bass. The quartet will be made complete by the addition of Virgil Donati ( UK , SOUTHERN SONS , STEVE VAI , ALLAN HOLDSWORTH ) on drums.

Downes continues: "With the addition of Virgil Donati and John Mitchell , two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John W . Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the ASIA songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years."

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts FOCUS , Turner and CURVED AIR . All three support acts boast their founder bandleaders and have deservedly attained the status of legend.

FOCUS will release a brand new studio album later in 2024. Led by the indomitable Sir Thijs Van Leer , it features original 1970s drummer Pierre Van Der Linden , plus the virtuoso talents of Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.

Martin Turner was lead vocalist, bassist, founding member and creative force behind 1970s rock music behemoth WISHBONE ASH , best known for such classic albums as "Argus" and "Pilgrimage" .

Formed in 1970, CURVED AIR are one of the founders of progressive rock and a retrospective collection of their most influential and ground-breaking material is currently in the planning stages. Sonja Kristina (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar) will treat audiences to an acoustic set featuring some of the band's most memorable musical moments. They will be joined by violinist Grzegorz Gadziomski .

Each performance on the tour will be MC'd by legendary artist Roger Dean . For so many, Dean 's artwork is synonymous with the music of the time and stands to represent the very best of British rock music.

The final word goes to Geoff Downes : "I am convinced that John 's [ Wetton ] spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure. After all, it is the Year Of The Dragon — just as it was in 1982, when we released our first ASIA album. It's as though it was meant to be. Looking forward to seeing you there, my friends — bring it on!”

“This is another important announcement for the Asian Development Tour, the Asian Tour’s incredibly important feeder circuit, that continues to flourish and confirm its essential position across our platforms,” said Cho Minn Thant , Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

The Indonesia Pro-Am Presented by Combiphar & Nomura is a new and innovative event benefitting from the support of a duo of strong, existing tournament partners.

To be played at Gunung Geulis Country Club from August 16-18 the event will feature an individual tournament and a Pro-Am. Total prize money will be US$125,000, while there is a pot of US$25,000 for the Pro-Am. The venue’s West and East Courses will be utilised.

The US$125,000 BNI Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament – won last year by Thai Suteepat Prateeptienchai , the 2022 ADT Order of Merit (OOM) winner following a hat-trick of victories – will return to Damai Indah Golf, BSD Course, from August 23-26. This year will mark the eighth edition of the tournament.

In 2019, Tom Kim Joo-hyung , the Korean now ranked 22nd on the Official World Golf Ranking, and a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, claimed the Ciputra event.

The US$70,000 OB Golf Invitational, first played in 2018, will be hosted by Sentul Highlands Golf Club, a new venue for the event, from October 6-8 .

Rising Indonesian star Naraajie E. The 2nd Indo Masters Golf Invitational presented by TNE completes the four events and will be hosted by Imperial Klub Golf, from October 11-13. The purse will be US$70,000. Australian Harrison Gilbert lifted the trophy in 2022.

Like the Indonesia Pro-Am and OB Golf Invitational, this event is promoted by OB Golf, also the organiser of the Indonesian Masters, past of the Asian Tour and The International Series.

Asian Tour CEO Cho said: “OB Golf are a long standing and wonderfully supportive partner, and we also thank Ciputra, the Professional Golf Tour of Indonesia, and the respective sponsors and venues for their much-welcomed involvement.

“The addition of a Pro-Am style tournament is also an exciting development that will add another level of interest in the Tour. Further schedule updates will be announced in due course.”
