About Porter Robinson:
At age 18, the North Carolina-based producer and songwriter burst onto the scene with a complex, bombastic brand of electro-house. Following the major success of his 2014 debut album Worlds , Porter released the RIAA Gold single “Shelter” with Madeon in 2016, followed by a Shelter Live Tour spanning 43 dates and four continents. The following year, Porter began releasing music under a new alias, Virtual Self, which led to his first Grammy nomination for the BBC Radio 1 hit single “Ghost Voices.” In 2019, Porter put on the first Second Sky Festival, which sold out all 30,000 tickets for the two-day festival in a single day. In both 2020 and 2021, Porter Robinson hosted editions of his virtual festival Secret Sky, amassing over 6 million viewers combined, and which came to be regarded as the most sophisticated virtual festivals of its time. Later in 2021, following the release of sophomore album Nurture, Second Sky Festival made its return to the Bay Area, selling out 40,000 tickets in a single day. Immediately following, the Nurture Live North American Tour sold over 150,000 concert tickets and was the highest grossing electronic tour of 2021. In 2022, in partnership with Riot Games, Robinson released “Everything Goes On” surpassing 100 million global streams . Later that year was his debut of one of two exclusive full live band performances, first at Second Sky 2022 and again in 2023 at the Coachella Main Stage.

‘SMILE! :D’ will be the follow-up to Robinson’s 2021 album ‘ Nurture ‘, which NME gave four stars : “While the title of final track ‘Trying To Feel Alive’ lays bare Porter’s years-long struggle with his mental health, it’s the closing words of ‘Mirror’ that most reflect the entire album and Porter’s journey as an artist: “Sometimes, the inner voice is encouraging, calling for you to run those final few yards / You’re nearly there – keep going, keep going; it will all be okay in the end”.”
In an interview about the album with NME , Robinson opened up about his fears that “I wouldn’t be able to ever make music again. And that was always my greatest fear.”
The musician and avid gamer also spoke to NME in 2023 about the impact games have had on his life , with 2003’s Star Wars Galaxies inspiring his debut album ‘Worlds’ when its servers closed in 2011.

Theodor Tezhik
The big kremlin’s wind.
Theodor Tezhik was born in Elektrostal (Russia) in 1946 and lives in Prague. In 1989 he was the first Russian to paint on the Berlin Wall. His painting “The Big Kremlin’s Wind” shows the soviet president Gorbachev flying into a crowd of people above the Kremlin in Moscow. The painting addresses the role the Kremlin played in the fall of the Wall.
The artist completed his colourful work “The Big Kremlin’s Wind” in only two days. It depicts a blustery storm whirling people into the air and causing the towers of the Kremlin in Moscow to bend. The later Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev is shown hanging upside down in the air. The phrase “Tempus fugit” (“Time flees”) along the upper edge is a reminder of the role the Kremlin played in the fall of the Wall and of how suddenly the political circumstances can change – as shown at the time in both East Germany and the then Soviet Union.
Tezhik graduated from the Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1970 and worked as a set designer for theatre and film. He became known for his fantastical set sculptures and inventive use of visual metaphors. He has also produced music videos for bands and acclaimed stage productions as artist-in-chief of the International Theatre Olympics in Moscow as well as author and director of various plays for the festival.

Asia Announces The Heat Of The Moment Tour in 2024
by Em Casalena April 24, 2024, 6:21 am
English rockers Asia are getting the gang back together (with some new faces) for a summer tour of the US and Canada! According to a press release for the tour, OG Asia member Geoff Downes “masterminded” the tour after the successful reunion concert held in memory of the band’s late singer and bassist John Wetton.
Videos by American Songwriter
“And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much Asia’s music belongs on the stage,” said Downes. “The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling.”
The tour will feature Downes, John Mitchell on guitar, Harry Whitley on vocals and bass, and Virgil Donati on drums. The band will bring along some killer supporting acts as well, including Focus, Curved Air, and Martin Turner.
The Asia 2024 Tour will begin on July 3 at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The tour will close on July 31 at The Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Stage and screen legend Nathan Lane to receive Signature Theatre’s Sondheim Award at The Anthem

He made us laugh on stage and screen from “The Lion King” to “The Birdcage” to “The Producers.”
The prolific Nathan Lane will receive Signature Theatre’s Sondheim Award at The Anthem on Monday, April 29.
“You start to feel really old, you start to think that this was the kind of thing they gave Angela Lansbury,” Lane told WTOP. “[Stephen Sondheim] was a hero to me and I was very lucky over the years to work with him many, many times, so it has a real significance on a personal level too, just to be getting this. Somewhere Steve is laughing, but yeah, it’s a lovely honor and I’m happy to be coming to Washington.”
Lane won his first Tony Award for the 1996 revival of Sondheim’s “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” They teamed up again on a 2004 adaptation of “The Frogs,” in which Lane starred and revised the book.
“He was drawn to really interesting and surprising subjects,” Lane said. “He’s sort of known for being brainy, an intellectual and sophisticated, but I think he writes about what people are going through: the longing and the loneliness. He writes about the human condition. … He was extraordinary in his musicianship, his lyric writing was extraordinary as well, and it has made him the person who has truly changed the face of musical theater.”
Lane will enjoy tributes from past co-stars, including Faith Prince, who won a Tony across Lane in the Broadway revival of “Guys & Dolls” (1992); Krysta Rodriguez, who starred with Lane in Broadway’s “The Addams Family” (2010); James Caverly, who played his son in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which won Lane an Emmy; and Susan Stroman, who directed Lane to his second Tony win for Mel Brooks’ “The Producers” (2001) on Broadway.
“‘The Producers’ was just that once in a lifetime phenomenon,” Lane said. “It was a zeitgeist hit. For some reason that’s what the audience really wanted. It was a throwback to old-fashioned musical comedy with an emphasis on comedy. … Whenever we did it, people just went crazy.”
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Disney’s “The Lion King” (1994), in which Lane sang “Hakuna Matata” as the meerkat Timon to Ernie Sabella’s warthog Pumbaa, one of the great comic-relief duos in animated history.
“In May, we’re doing this Elton John and Hans Zimmer [event], it’s a ‘Lion King’ 30th anniversary concert at the Hollywood Bowl, so Ernie and I will be singing ‘Hakuna Matata,'” Lane said.

Texas Tech Now
Texas tech director inducted into college of fellows of the american theatre.
April 26, 2024
Mark Charney has served as the Director of the School of Theatre & Dance for 11 years.
Mark Charney , the Director of the School of Theatre & Dance in the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts at Texas Tech University , was inducted as part of the 2024 class into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre on April 21 at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Charney, an award-winning playwright, has served as director since 2012 and has since had numerous works performed all around the world.
Charney said his induction was “humbling and exciting, especially to be celebrated by some of the best scholars, performers and theater practitioners in the world. Much of the event was hosted by Phyllis ‘Phylicia' Rashad, and to be honored in this way, this lifetime achievement award, for which you must be nominated and voted upon unanimously by existing fellows, exceeded all expectations.”
After retiring as professor emeritus from his alma mater, Clemson University, Charney joined the faculty at Texas Tech. He has served as past chair for Region IV, part member of the National Selection Team and as National Coordinator of the Institute for Theatre Journalism and Advocacy/Dramaturgy for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. He most recently served as the Associate Director of the National Critics Institute for the O'Neill Theatre Center for 19 years.
His award-winning works include “The Power Behind the Palette,” which won the David Mark Cohen Award. His play “Shooting Blanks” was featured at the Prague Fringe Festival that same year in 2016. Along with collaborator Cory Norman, their play, “Empty Roads with Cars,” was produced at the International Festival in Turkey in 2021, and their commissioned work about Jack Kevorkian, “If Christ was Born in a Barn, Dyin' in a Van Ain't so Bad,” was developed in London in 2021-22 and is being considered for a London premiere.
He is an honorary inductee of the Actors Hall of Fame based on his work with criticism and dramaturgy, and he served six years on the National Board of the National Association of Schools of Theatre and Artistic Director of the International Association of Schools of Southeast Asia.
“Dr. Charney's induction is a testament to his long career in theater, and to his quality as an educator,” said Martin Camacho, dean of the college. “TCVPA is honored to have a person of such distinction among our faculty.”
The College of Fellows of the American Theatre is composed of actors, critics, designers, playwrights, producers, program administrators, distinguished teachers and scholars. It works to promote and encourage the highest standards of research, writing and creativity in educational and professional theatre by honoring the service and accomplishments of nationally recognized individuals.
