Miles and Points Transfer Options

award travel 101 transfer chart

One of the most powerful tools you have when it comes to making the most of your miles and points is the strategic use of transfers.

For example: You can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to miles in a variety of airline programs, or to points in some hotel programs . The same can be said for Chase Ultimate Rewards points and those from Citi ThankYou. It’s also possible to convert points from many hotel programs to airline miles (though those transfers are usually at inferior rates when compared to the 1:1 ratio that Chase UR offers).

Here’s a handy cheat sheet of some of the best airline loyalty programs and how you can transfer more miles into them.

Air Canada Aeroplan

Why are these miles good.

Aeroplan is a good option for travel from the United States to parts of Europe, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain (including Balearic Islands; excluding Canary Islands), Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. A round-trip award in business class is 90,000 miles; it costs 125,000 miles round-trip in first class. The program also allows two stopovers on a round-trip award ticket (or one open jaw and stopover).

Transfer Options:

  • American Express Membership Rewards: 1:1
  • Marriott Rewards: 10,000 points = 2,000 miles
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards: 10,000 points = 2,000 miles
  • Starwood Preferred Guest: 1:1, plus 5,000 bonus when transferring 20,000
  • Wyndham Rewards: 6,000 points = 1,200 miles

Several of Aeroplan partners are offering programs

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

Alaska Airlines has some pretty generous rules for frequent flyers. The airline allows a stopover on award tickets even one-way awards! And there are no close-in award ticketing fees when you book travel shortly before the departure date. That can definitely save you some money if you tend to plan award trips at the last minute. The award chart is reasonable, and the airline has some really solid partners, such as Emirates, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Aeromexico, Air France, American, British Airways, Delta, Fiji Airways, KLM, LAN, PenAir and Ravn Alaska.

  • Best Western: 5,000 points = 1,000 miles
  • Choice Privileges: 5,000 points = 1,000 miles
  • IHG Rewards Club: 10,000 points = 2,000 miles

American Airlines AAdvantage

American is part of the oneworld alliance, and so that opens up your ability to redeem AAdvantage miles on a variety of airlines serving global destinations. You can book one-way awards at half the cost of round-trip redemptions, and availability on certain routes is quite good.

  • Club Carlson: 2,000 points = 200 miles
  • Hyatt: 2.5 points = 1 mile, plus 5,000 bonus when transferring 50,000 points

British Airways Executive Club

While it’s true that British Airways adds a fuel surcharge to its own award tickets as well as to some partner awards, there is one aspect of the program that is a boon to some travelers: its distance-based award chart. This makes it possible for you to travel on some routes on oneworld partners American and US Airways for fewer miles than if you booked directly through those programs. For example, the round-trip from Charlotte to Orlando is just 9,000 British Airways Avios points. You can also fly from Phoenix to Hawaii for just 25,000 points roundtrip.

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards: 1:1
  • Club Carlson: 2,000 points = 200 Avios
  • IHG Rewards Club: 10,000 points = 2,000 Avios
  • Marriott Rewards: 10,000 points = 2,000 Avios
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards 10,000 points = 2,000 Avios

Delta SkyMiles

I’m struggling to say something nice about Delta here. The fact is, the airline has a terrible online award booking engine and low level awards are getting harder and harder to come by. That being said, Delta has a fantastic route map and is a member of SkyTeam; that opens up your ability to book rewards on airlines such as Alitalia, Air France, KLM, Korean Air, China Eastern, China Southern and several others.

Transfer points with Delta

Frontier Airlines EarlyReturns

This is an excellent program if Frontier flies from your home airport and you focus award redemptions on domestic travel. A round-trip domestic flight costs just 20,000 miles.

EarlyReturns transfer partners

Hawaiian Airlines

If your family visits Hawaii often, Hawaiian Airlines offers excellent reward availability, and its planes are quite comfortable.

  • American Express Membership Rewards: 250 MR = 200 TrueBlue

JetBlue TrueBlue

JetBlues program is very good for anyone making domestic trips or jaunts to the Caribbean.

  • Marriott Rewards: 10,000 points = 1,000 TrueBlue
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards: 10,000 points = 1,000 TrueBlue

Korean Air SkyPass

Korean Air offers excellent business class and first class award availability, and the service in those cabins is exemplary.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

One of the Holy Grails in award redemptions is the famed Singapore Suite. Save up your miles to redeem for this over-the-top (and comfortable) experience. (The airline also has terrific coverage to cities throughout Asia.)

  • Citi Thank You Rewards: 1:1
  • Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints: 1:1, plus 5,000 bonus when transferring 20,000

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards

Here’s another program that is especially useful for families making domestic trips.

  • Best Western: 5,000 points = 1,000 Rapid Rewards
  • Choice Privileges: 6,000 points = 1,800 Rapid Rewards
  • Club Carlson: 2,000 points = 200 Rapid Rewards
  • Marriott Rewards: 10,000 points = 2,000 Rapid Rewards
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards: 10,000 points = 2,000 Rapid Rewards
  • Wyndham Rewards: 6,000 points = 1,200 Rapid Rewards

Spirit Airlines Free Spirit

Spirit is a good option for some travelers making domestic trips. If you have the airlines co-branded credit card, you’ll have access to some reduced award rates. For example, cardholders can redeem off-peak one-way awards for as few as 2,500 miles.

United Airlines MileagePlus

United’s most recent award chart devaluation hit international redemptions quite hard. However, domestic awards are still reasonable, and availability is generally good.

  • Marriott Rewards: 8,000 points = 2,000 miles

US Airways Dividend Miles

US Airways is merging with American, so eventually (probably sometime in late 2015 or early 2016) your Dividend Miles will become American AAdvantage miles. In the meantime, you can use them to book any US Airways flight or those on oneworld partners.

  • Starwood Preferred Guest; 1:1, plus 5,000 bonus when transferring 20,000

Virgin America Elevate

Virgin America Elevate is a relatively new program, and it doesn’t really have any particular award chart sweet spots. However, American Express does occasionally offer bonuses on transfers of Membership Rewards points to the program. The bonus transfer can create the opportunity for some lucrative redemptions.

Transfer your points to AmEx

  • American Express Membership Rewards: 200 MR = 100 Elevate
  • Marriott Rewards: 10,000 points = 1,000 Elevate

Highlight Feature: Booking Your First International Business Class Flight

Welcome to Episode 60 of the AT101 Podcast! My co-host, Angie Sparks is off, AND I was traveling to Australia for the most crazy journey I've done to this point, but I thought I’d introduce Tod this week, so we recorded this episode ahead of my travels. Tod is a longtime friend, but he hasn’t always been as excited about award travel as many of us have been. He’s the perfect example of someone who didn’t believe in the power of credit card rewards, yet has come to embrace them as a tool to do more with less.

In our highlight feature, we’ll discuss his growth and how he’s managed to book his first international (overseas) trip to Manilla, Philippines (in business class) and how he’s booking airlines that he would never have expected to be flying just a few short months ago (like Qatar’s QSuites or EVA lie-flat business class) - all from credit card reward programs and a willingness to branch out.

Stacking rewards programs can be useful - like getting Grocery store/fuel rewards in addition to your cards that earn category bonuses.

7 of the best airline award chart sweet spots

Ben Smithson

One important distinction between advanced award travelers and those newer to the world of points and miles is how each group searches for award space.

Those with experience earning and burning points and miles will carefully study various partner award charts, looking at where to transfer their flexible points and what sweet spots they can utilize. Meanwhile, beginners may log into their United MileagePlus or American Airlines AAdvantage account, search for the destination they want to visit and book the first award they see regardless of price or convenience.

While anyone can accrue a good amount of points by earning welcome bonuses on top travel credit cards , this difference in redemption strategies is huge. Using the right partner program to book your award could save you as much as 50%, depending on the carrier and route.

With major programs switching to dynamic pricing and 500,000 miles for one-way business-class flights to Europe becoming increasingly common, it's more important than ever to know the best ways to maximize your points and miles.

Today, we'll look at some of the best value sweet spot award redemptions. While this list is not exhaustive, if you plan to travel to one of these destinations and have points at your disposal, these are surefire ways to get an excellent redemption value every time. If you're new to the world of points and miles and any of these destinations interest you, you can use this as a road map to instant success.

ANA premium cabins to Japan with Virgin Atlantic points

Virgin Atlantic's partner award chart for ANA is one of the best sweet spots out there. While availability can be hard to come by, and the first-class rates recently increased , this remains an incredible use of Virgin points.

award travel 101 transfer chart

The sweet spot

For this sweet spot, it's important to know that the prices differ if you're flying from the West Coast versus the central and eastern U.S. You can also book one-way flights for half the round-trip prices noted below.

award travel 101 transfer chart

ANA's new business class is called " The Room ," and its new first class is referred to as "The Suite." Both are excellent products that we are big fans of here at TPG — and flying in either means you can visit the always-popular Japan.

You're allowed an open-jaw routing as long as you stay within the same region of the U.S. (West or Central/East). This means you can mix and match airports wherever you find award space.

For example, flying from Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Tokyo's Narita International Airport (NRT) and then returning from Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND) to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) would be a valid itinerary, costing only 95,000 points in business or 170,000 points in first class.

Availability can be scarce — you will have the best luck booking 12 months in advance (as soon as the seats are loaded) or last minute (less than 14 days before departure when unsold seats are often loaded for awards). Your best bet for finding availability is to search for it using the United MileagePlus website and call Virgin's Flying Club to book.

Earning Virgin Atlantic miles

Virgin Atlantic miles are among the easiest to earn . You can transfer points from Chase Ultimate Rewards , American Express Membership Rewards , Citi ThankYou Rewards , Capital One , Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy to Flying Club. Keep an eye out for transfer bonuses from Amex or Citi that could drop your costs even further.

Iberia business class to Spain with Avios

Iberia Avios can unlock one of the cheapest ways to fly to Europe in business class.

award travel 101 transfer chart

The key to this sweet spot is to fly a nonstop, Iberia-operated flight of 3,001 to 4,000 miles on off-peak dates (check Iberia's peak and off-peak calendar ). This is because Iberia uses a distance-based award chart for its flights.

award travel 101 transfer chart

Iberia operates several transatlantic flights that fall into the 3,001- to 4,000-mile distance band. As such, you can book Iberia flights between the following city pairs for just 34,000 Avios, plus modest taxes and fees:

  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD).
  • BOS to Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN).
  • JFK to MAD.
  • JFK to BCN.
  • IAD to MAD.

While flights from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to MAD are slightly outside this range, they also price at 34,000 Avios one-way in business class .

Earning Avios

There are three primary ways for U.S.-based travelers to earn Iberia Avios:

  • Transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards or Marriott Bonvoy.
  • Transfer Avios from British Airways, Qatar Airways or Aer Lingus.
  • Sign up for a new (or use an existing) Avios-earning card , such as the Iberia Visa Signature® Card .

Qatar Airways Qsuite business class to the Middle East or Africa with AAdvantage miles

Qatar Airways has won numerous awards for its innovative Qsuite business-class product , regarded as one of the world's best business-class experiences .

award travel 101 transfer chart

If you don't live near a Qatar Airways gateway, you may be able to find an itinerary that allows you to connect domestically in the U.S. for the same cost.

You can search for award availability online , even if you don't have the necessary miles. Just note that award space may be difficult to come by, so check back regularly if you can't find flights on your desired route.

Earning AAdvantage miles

There are a few American Airlines cobranded cards you can use to quickly accrue AAdvantage miles.

  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® : Earn 50,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after spending $2,500 on purchases in the first three months of account opening ($99 annual fee that's waived the first year; see rates and fees ).
  • CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® : Earn 65,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after spending $4,000 in purchases within the first four months of account opening ($99 annual fee that's waived the first 12 months).
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® : Earn 70,000 miles after you spend $7,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening ($595 annual fee, see rates and fees ).
  • AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® : 50,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after making your first purchase and paying the $99 annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days.

The information for the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard and AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

You can also transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to American Airlines AAdvantage at a 3:1 transfer ratio. Additionally, if you pay your rent with Bilt Rewards or spend on the Bilt Mastercard® (see rates and fees ), you can transfer your points 1:1 to AAdvantage. Points transfer from Bilt to AAdvantage instantly.

Cathay Pacific business class to Asia or Africa with Alaska miles

The Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan used to be one of our favorite airline programs, as the program once offered some incredible award flight sweet spots . Sadly, Alaska has removed many of its award deals, but Cathay Pacific is one of the remaining Mileage Plan sweet spots that you should book before it disappears.

award travel 101 transfer chart

Flying with Cathay Pacific from the West Coast to its Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) hub will cost 30,000 miles each way in economy. If you can find available seats in premium cabins (which is difficult), you'll pay 50,000 miles per person in business class and 70,000 miles per person in first class.

You can also continue on to several points in Asia, such as various destinations in India and Dubai International Airport (DXB), paying just 50,000 miles per person for a one-way flight in economy. Expect to pay 62,500 miles for a one-way business-class ticket and 70,000 miles for a first-class ticket.

Unfortunately, Cathay Pacific's premium cabin seats are extremely tough to find. If you find availability, we recommend booking immediately. If you need to cancel your ticket later, Alaska will redeposit the miles and refund the taxes and fees without penalty.

Earning Alaska miles

Alaska miles aren't the easiest to earn, as they are not linked to any major transferable program. Thankfully, Alaska's broad list of airline partners means you can earn when flying with many different airlines.

Alaska Airlines also has two cobranded credit cards with Bank of America.

  • Alaska Airlines Visa® credit card : Earn 70,000 bonus miles plus Alaska's Famous Companion Fare™ ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23) with this offer. To qualify, make $3,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account.
  • Alaska Airlines Visa® Business card : Earn 50,000 bonus miles and Alaska's Famous Companion Fare; ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23) after you make $3,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account.

Short-haul flights on British Airways with Avios

With dynamic pricing in some programs showing up to 100,000 miles for a single flight in economy, British Airways is a good alternative. The Executive Club program offers low prices on short flights.

British Airways only charges 4,750 Avios each way for off-peak flights it operates from London to destinations up to 600 miles away. This includes destinations in Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Taxes will set you back just $31 (this can vary depending on current exchange rates), though you also have the option to reduce this to $1 by redeeming 9,250 Avios.

award travel 101 transfer chart

Award flights include full-size cabin baggage and checked baggage.

Earning British Airways Avios

The easiest way to earn a meaningful number of Avios for everyday spending is by applying for the British Airways Visa Signature Card . You'll earn 75,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. TPG values Avios at 1.5 cents each , making the full bonus worth $1,125.

The British Airways Visa Signature has a $95 annual fee and earns 3 Avios per dollar spent on purchases with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Level. Plus, you can earn 2 Avios per dollar spent on hotel accommodations when purchased directly with the hotel. All other purchases earn 1 Avios per dollar spent.

British Airways is also a transfer partner of Capital One, Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy, making Avios one of the easiest currencies to earn .

Points transfer from Capital One, Chase, Bilt and Amex at a 1:1 ratio (in addition to occasional transfer bonuses of up to 40%), while Marriott Bonvoy points transfer to Avios at a 3:1 ratio. Plus, you'll get a 5,000-Avios bonus for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred.

Air France-KLM Flying Blue promo awards

From paid ticket sales to redemption promotions , there are endless opportunities to book travel at a discount. However, few sales are as reliable as the Promo Rewards we see each month from Air France-KLM Flying Blue .

With Flying Blue adopting dynamic pricing with highly variable rates in all classes, this monthly offer is an excellent way to save on award travel.

award travel 101 transfer chart

These monthly Promo Rewards regularly appear on the Flying Blue website and offer discounts on flights to and from select cities or region pairs. All discounts are only bookable through the end of the month, and there's a set travel window.

Each month, the destinations, discounts and classes change, so keep an eye out for what is currently available. In the past, we have seen deals like:

  • 39,000 miles in business class from Miami International Airport (MIA) to London's Heathrow Airport (LHR), flying KLM.
  • 22,500 miles in premium economy class from IAD to Munich Airport (MUC), flying Air France.
  • 11,250 miles in economy from ORD to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), flying Air France.

Earning Flying Blue miles

Boosting your Flying Blue balance is easy since the program partners with all major transferable points currencies.

You can transfer points at a 1:1 ratio from American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards. You can also transfer Marriott points at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points you transfer.

Based on our tests, Amex , Bilt , Capital One , Chase and Citi transfers should post almost instantly. However, that wasn't the case with our test transfer from Marriott , which took three days to arrive in our Flying Blue account.

United's dynamic pricing means you won't find a set price for flights booked via the MileagePlus program . However, when there is saver-level inventory (the X fare class for economy or the I fare class for business), Turkish Airlines' Miles&Smiles becomes one of the best options available.

award travel 101 transfer chart

For any domestic flight in the U.S., including to or from Hawaii, Turkish requires just 7,500 miles each way in economy. If you're lucky enough to find domestic first class, those award tickets only cost 12,500 miles each way.

For example, we found a round-trip ticket in economy from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Hawaii's Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) that only requires 15,000 Turkish miles plus $11.20 in taxes and fees.

award travel 101 transfer chart

This exact same flight would be 25,800 United miles.

The key to this sweet spot is finding saver-level inventory. You can search for these fares on United.com , though note that award tickets in any fare class other than X for economy and I for business class are not bookable through partner programs.

Earning Turkish miles

Miles&Smiles partners with a trio of programs: Capital One, Citi ThankYou Rewards and Bilt Rewards. You can transfer rewards from any of these programs at a 1:1 ratio, and our tests indicate that transfers should process instantly.

Bottom line

When it comes to making award reservations, you need certain stars to align. A little bit of flexibility is required to make the process run smoothly, and that might mean changing the dates of your trip a bit or opting for a destination with more plentiful award space. If these three things fall into place, you'll have a solid award flight.

However, there's a fourth element to the equation: value. If you can score one of the above sweet spots, you're essentially guaranteed to get incredible value from your redemption.

Award Charts, Airline Alliances and ‘Sweet Spot’ Redemptions

How Airline Awards Charts Work

Today we want to focus on the conversion of miles into award flights by understanding airline award charts and the three major airline alliances.

But first, some useful information about what you generally can do with your Award Miles:

  • You can get award tickets for yourself on the airline whose miles you’ve accumulated.
  • You can get award tickets for other people (family, friends, etc.) on the airline whose miles you’ve accumulated.
  • You can get award travel for yourself and others on alliance partner airlines of the airline whose miles you’ve accumulated.

It is helpful to know that you usually cannot transfer airline miles from your account to another person’s account (even a spouse) without paying a huge fee.

There are some rare instances where you can transfer airline miles. For instance, British Airways and Jetblue allow you to pool miles across family members’ accounts, and most of the major hotel chains allow you to transfer your points, but as a general rule you should consider that points in one person’s actual airline account cannot be combined with another person’s points.

It is possible, therefore, find yourself in a situation where you have enough points all together for an award redemption, but because the points are split between accounts you cannot actually book the ticket, so be mindful of this.

In a prior lesson we mentioned how valuable transferable points can be, and these are other instances:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to the airline/hotel rewards account of a family member who is an authorized user on your credit card account.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards can also be transferred to another Ultimate Rewards account if they reside at the same residence as you. This could be you spouse, partner, children, roommate or even your mortal enemy.
  • AMEX allows you to transfer their Membership Rewards points to the rewards account of an authorized user on that credit card account.

That adds another layer of flexibility to those points.

A Background on Airline Award Charts:

Which award chart to use.

This trips up nearly everyone at the beginning, so it’s essential that you remember this:

Each airline has its own award chart , and even though they are often quite similar, differences do exist and you can exploit those to your benefit; we call these ‘sweet spots.’

Because of the wonders of the airline alliances and partnerships, you can use one miles currency to book flights on many different airlines. However, for the purposes of the award chart, it isn’t relevant which actual airline’s plane you’ll be flying on — all that is relevant is the currency you’re using to book the flight.

To determine how much the award flight will cost you, you must look only to the award chart for the airline where you have accumulated the miles.  For instance, if you wanted to use United miles to fly United, you would go to united.com. If you wanted to fly Singapore Airlines and use United miles, you would also go to united.com.  It’s all about the miles you have , NOT the plane you’re flying on!

Understanding Airline Alliances:

There are 3 main worldwide airline alliances. Having points on one alliance member allows you to book award flights on the other alliance partner flights (always pending award availability).

This means you could have points from just one member of each alliance and potentially fly on dozens of airlines across all three alliances. Alliances make frequent flyer miles much more powerful.

  • Star Alliance ( click to see all partners ): United, Air Canada, and Lufthansa are all main draws for US based travelers. United miles are quite easy to accumulate (United cards and Chase Ultimate Rewards), though Singapore Airlines is actually a transfer partner of all the transferable points programs and can be viable in many cases (though they do pass on ‘fuel surcharges’ on many non-United partner redemptions).
  • OneWorld Alliance ( click to see all partners ): American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Iberia all make this a top-notch alliance for travelers. American Airlines miles are plentiful as you can continually open the Citi AA cards to earn the signup bonuses many times over. British Airways miles are another that are quite easy to come by as a Chase UR and Amex MR transfer partner.
  • Sky Team Alliance ( click to see all partners ): In our opinion this is the weakest of the 3 major alliances; Delta, Air France and Korean Air are the top draws here. Delta is notoriously difficult to find award flights at the Saver Level, so that knocks out a huge portion of this alliance for most US based travelers. Air France often has promotions to fly to Europe and as an Amex MR partner, it could be an attractive option.

“Normal” Redemption Levels to Note:

We put “normal” in quotes here because as we’ve said, there are differences on a chart-by-chart basis, but it is important that you have a framework for what some major redemptions cost at the Saver Economy level ( Note : unless in dire circumstances, we ONLY book Saver Level flights):

  • One-way flights in the continental United States: 12,500 miles
  • One-way flights from the continental US to Europe: 30,000 miles
  • One-way flights from the continental US to Hawaii: 22,500 miles
  • One-way flights from the continental US to the Caribbean: 17,500 miles

Let’s say a standard flight using United miles costs 12,500 miles to fly one-way in the US. This would be the case whether it was a flight from New York to Los Angeles or a simple hop from New York to Miami because their award chart says a one-way flight in the continental United States costs 12,500 United miles.

Example of Saver Level Flights:

award travel 101 transfer chart

You’ll notice the “Saver Award” is 12,500 miles while other Economy flights can cost as much as 27,500 United miles on this same journey from DC to Phoenix!

Sweet Spot Redemptions:

Our definition of sweet spot redemption:

You’ve found a way to exploit an award chart (usually of a partner airline) to fly a route for fewer miles than the standard redemption.

It is important to note the aforementioned standard redemptions as foundation to know how to accurately assess if you’ve found what we call a “sweet spot” redemption.

Here are some examples:

British airways (ba) award chart:.

We will discuss BA and their miles (Avios) in great detail later in the course, but it would be silly if we didn’t start off any discussion of sweet spot redemptions with the BA award chart as there is huge value to be had here.

BA bases their redemptions on the distance the flight actually travels.

Their award chart is split into different distance “zones” and the most lucrative are generally:

  • Zone 1: If the one-way flight is under 650 miles in distance, it only costs 4,500 Avios one-way (9,000 round-trip)
  • Zone 2: If the one-way flight is between 651-1,150 miles, it costs 7,500 Avios one-way (15,000 round-trip).

Important Note: Zone 1 flights “for reward flights originating or terminating in the United States of America” are 7,500 Avios one-way. All other Zone 1 flights throughout the world are 4,500 Avios.

Keep in mind that this award chart governs the redemptions on their partner airlines, which in the US means all flights on American Airlines and Alaska Airlines

Some real-world examples:

  • American Airlines flies to Bermuda from a number of East Coast airports; because of the distance from each, it only costs 15,000 Avios to fly round-trip instead of the normal 35,000 for Bermuda being part of the “Caribbean” region.
  • While it is (ironically) generally terrible to use Avios to fly to Europe because they add “fuel surcharges” there are some sweet spot exceptions: Using Avios to book the Aer Lingus flights from 6 cities during their generous “off peak” time for only 26,000 Avios for the round-trip flight ! Compare this with 60,000 miles for the ‘normal’ redemption.

American Airlines Off Peak Chart:

Please navigate to the American Airlines Award Chart by clicking this link:

American Airlines Award Chart Link

If you click “Details on Award Travel” near the top of the page, you’ll see a list with “MileSAAver OffPeak dates.”

The AA off-peak chart is quite generous as for instance their off-peak schedule for Europe runs nearly 4 months.

And in this case you’d only pay 45,000 AA miles instead of the normal 60,000 for a round-trip to Europe.

Hawaii Sweet Spots:

Hawaii is a top destination for travelers and there are some solid sweet spots available here compared to the normal 45,000 mile round-trip requirement:

  • Hawaii from the West Coast using BA Avios: There are currently 10 West Coast airports where you only need 25,000 Avios for a round-trip flight to Hawaii on either AA, US Air or Alaska Airlines.
  • Using Singapore Airlines miles to fly on United airplanes costs 35,000 Singapore miles. You find availability on United, transfer your points (all major programs transfer to Singapore) and book the flight with Singapore miles.
  • Using Korean Air miles to fly on Delta airplanes costs 25,000 Korean Air miles. The hardest part with all Delta flights is finding award availability at the lowest Saver Level, but if you can do that, you can book using Korean Air miles to get this round-trip flight for only 25k miles.

Action Steps:

  • Click on the American Airlines award chart link above and see if you can use their Off-Peak chart for future sweet spot redemptions.
  • Google “ Your City Airport Wiki” (for instance, “Boston Airport wiki”) to find your local airport wikipedia page. Scroll down to see all your available options on American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. These direct flights can be flown using BA Avios miles. Will any of these benefit you in the future?

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

What kind of flight can 25,000 United miles get you? How much is 2,000 Southwest points worth? Trying to assign a value to airline points and miles can be a haphazard task.

Here at NerdWallet, we’ve created our own airline miles valuations through a comprehensive analysis of hundreds of flights across eight airline programs. But even still, it’s tough to definitively know how much a flight costs on points, the way everyone knows that a Costco hot dog and soda combo forever and always costs $1.50.

Thanks to airlines with award charts, there’s a little more clarity around how much it’ll cost to book flights on miles or points.

Airline reward redemptions: award charts vs. dynamic pricing

Dynamic pricing: Some airlines have what’s called dynamic pricing, where the cost to book flights on points or miles is loosely correlated with the cost in dollars. Meaning: A more expensive cash fare also costs more in miles.

Among the biggest airline programs that deal in dynamic pricing are:

Delta SkyMiles .

JetBlue TrueBlue .

Southwest Rapid Rewards .

United MileagePlus .

Award charts: Meanwhile, other airlines use award charts to define the cost to book award flights. With award charts, routes have fixed redemption rates. Those fixed numbers can be based on factors such as time of travel (typically broken down into three categories: standard, peak season and off season), the region you’re traveling to or the number of miles flown (or a combination of all of those things).

Award charts can be helpful in eliminating guesswork around how much your flight might cost. If you fly on American Airlines from your home in Houston to Hawaii for the holidays, you can know it’s 22,500 MileSAAver miles, no matter what time or specific day of the week you actually fly.

Award charts also mean you can find redemption sweet spots, which are extra-good deals simply because your route is optimized perfectly for a relatively low points redemption (even if it might actually be fairly pricey when paid for in cash).

Alaska award charts

Alaska’s award flight booking system bases the cost of flights on a combination of route popularity and flight distance. It also awards miles in distance traveled (rather than dollars spent).

For flights within the contiguous U.S. and Alaska, award tickets start at 5,000 miles each way (that’s for trips less than 700 miles in Main Cabin). But for longer flights within the contiguous U.S. and Alaska, expect to pay as much as 50,000 miles for a Main Cabin seat.

Sometimes, international travel through partner airlines can turn out to be even cheaper. Economy seats between the U.S. and Asia on Cathay Pacific are just 30,000 Alaska miles, while seats on American Airlines between the U.S. and Australia are just 40,000 miles, which can turn out to be a great deal when traveling during peak seasons.

NerdWallet values Alaska miles at 1.4 cents each.

There’s also the Money & Miles payment option, which lets you pay partially with miles and partially with money (though it also tends to result in relatively poor value).

The ANA Mileage Club uses a distance-based award chart, so shorter flights will cost fewer points than longer ones. Japan domestic flights, such as between Tokyo and Osaka, start at just 5,000 miles one way (longer flights cost more, such as 7,000 miles to fly between Okinawa and Tokyo). Meanwhile, international flights start at 12,000 miles.

With so many partner airlines and relatively low rates to book on those airlines, the ANA Mileage Club is one of the best loyalty programs for booking flights with almost all of the other Star Alliance airlines.

Rather than a region-based award chart, British Airways has an entirely distance-based award chart. That’s especially beneficial when you’re flying short-haul flights within the same region, such as between Los Angeles and San Francisco, as opposed to long-haul flights that would otherwise be within the same region, such as between Los Angeles and New York (in which case you might be better off booking with an airline that has a region-based award chart).

The Cathay Pacific frequent flyer program has a standard award chart that determines point redemptions by distance-based zones, so a flight that’s between 1 and 750 miles would cost less than one that’s between 751 and 2,750 miles.

While Cathay Pacific can have great redemptions — especially if you can find a sweet spot flight that reaches into the upper end of Cathay Pacific’s distance-based zones — many points and miles pros prefer using Alaska miles to book award flights on Cathay Pacific, such as the bucket-list trip of using Alaska miles to book a first class Cathay ticket to Asia.

Frontier Airlines Frontier Miles

Frontier resources:

Award chart

The Frontier Miles program (formerly known as EarlyReturns) is based on a set award chart. Though there are no blackout dates, Frontier does limit the number of award flights sold.

One-way flights on Frontier Airlines start at 10,000 miles for flights within the U.S. and Puerto Rico. International flights can turn out to be a particularly good deal, with flights between the U.S. and either Jamaica, Mexico or the Dominican Republic starting at 15,000 miles.

NerdWallet values Frontier miles at 1.1 cents each.

The Hawaiian Airlines award chart is region-based, with flights within Hawaii starting at 7,500 miles for Main Cabin fares. Flights from Hawaii to the West Coast of the U.S. mainland start at 20,000 miles, while flights to the East Coast cost 30,000 miles.

NerdWallet values Hawaiian miles at 1.2 cents each.

The bottom line

Award charts have their pros and cons, but for airlines with fixed award charts (versus dynamic pricing), there’s typically less of a correlation with award redemptions and cash fares. If you spot an ultra-cheap cash airfare sale, you may not get that same discount in points or miles.

Award charts also mean plenty of room for sweet spot redemptions, based on distance flown, regions you're traveling between or time of year.
