Thank you for a great tour! We had Alicia as our guide. She had a great knowledge about the history of Berlin and communicated in a manner anyone could follow! Touring the city on the bike was a great experience as we saw much more than we could have by foot within the same period of time. Signe B. Berlin Highlights Bike Tour
I have taken several guided tours in my life and this was the best tour I ever had. Our guide, Ronin, was timely and affable and the bikes were decent. We didn’t just ride around  Potsdam  – we got a thorough history lesson of medieval Germany up through the WWII  Potsdam  Conference. Ronin was an expert in German history: Frederich’s and Wilhelm’s, Nazi’s, you name it. I was very impressed and highly recommend this tour. Brian B Gardens & Palaces of Potsdam Bike Tour
Felix our guide was very well informed and brought history to life through the stories of individuals at various stages of the Cold War. The stop points were all interesting, our safety was considered at all times and Felix was good humoured and flexible. He delivered the information in a well paced interesting, human way. Jessica Berlin Wall Bike Tour
Wonderful 3 h trip with Nate and we saw the main sights, got the complex history, impressively explained with a pavement chalk visual and we loved all we did. Very safely managed through the streets and all professionally done start to finish. Easy flat cycling for all ages and group age was 20 to 65 I guess. Definitely a treat of the weekend visit. Great location to go from as so well linked with the city transport wherever you are staying. Louise B. Berlin Highlights Bike Tour
This was our first city bike tour but it won’t be our last . Well organized from start to finish and our guide was excellent – just the right amount and sort of information. We took the opportunity to rent the bikes for the rest of the day which was perfect too ! Liz W. Berlin Highlights Bike Tour
Ronan is an extraordinary font of  Third Reich  History knowledge, plus has the ability to tell a darn good story. Wish we had had history teachers like Ronan at school. A complete joy from start to finish. This is the third Fat Bike Tour I have taken ( 2 in London ) and they have all been of an equally high quality. Thanks. Sarah B. Third Reich & Nazi Berlin Bike Tour
Had a great time with Kearon. The food was delicious and it was great to tour around Berlin and night. Would recommend this to anyone visiting Berlin. Barbara A. Berlin Food Tour by Bike
We take an annual city break with friends and in recent years have used a Segway tour as a good way of getting our bearings. The Fat Tire tour of Berlin is the best we have had, mainly thanks to Geoff our guide, who was excellent in every way, especially knowledgeable on the history of Berlin and geared his tour info on what we were all interested in, especially the story of the  Berlin Wall . Other staff were pleasant and the hot tea at the end of the tour on what was quite a chilly day was most welcome! 5 stars and a big thank you for a great start to our city break. Ian Berlin City Segway Tour
Amazing tour, so much fun and informative. Gave me quite a bit of insight into the different elements in Berlin’s history. The tour is very well organized, bikes are in excellent shape, and the 3 hour duration was just about right. Our tour guide Alicia was super friendly. She knows Berlin and its history very well, and explained everything in an easy and fun way. She also helped with recommendations on what to do in Berlin beyond the tour. Highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Berlin Khaled N. Berlin Highlights Bike Tour

Bike to the best of Berlin

The Berlin Highlights bike tour squeezes all the very best of Berlin into an exciting 3.5-hour ride! Enjoy the benefits of bike rental and a family-friendly day tour suitable for children.

Cycle through the trendy neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg to a remaining piece of the iconic Berlin Wall, adorned with thought-provoking murals. You’ll ride to the moving Holocaust Memorial, standing just streets away from the Tiergarten, with its cheerful strollers and green expanse. This contrast is heightened on a drizzly day, when the stones of the memorial appear to be weeping. Cycling through the Tiergarten, listening to the lively chorus of birdsong in the canopy above, you’ll experience Berlin’s garden sanctuary. Honeysuckle sweetens the air and rhododendrons erupt in color beside you.

The bicycle tour takes in Germany’s historic government building, the Reichstag, before you ride to the city's famous Brandenburg Gate. Checkpoint Charlie is a must-see, offering opportunities to pose with guards in authentic uniforms. The guided tour continues to the Gendarmenmarkt, a stunning square home to the Berlin Concert Hall, as well as French and German churches to delight the eyes. You’ll ride to Bebelplatz, site of the famous book burnings, and on to the Prussian boulevard Unter den Linden.

Parking your bike on Museum Island, you'll be astounded by the beauty of the Berlin Cathedral (the Berliner Dom) and the newly rebuilt Berlin City Palace. The day tour finishes on a 368m high as you take in the landmark Berlin TV Tower at Alexanderplatz.

Best of Berlin in a 3-hour ride

· berlin highlights bike tour.

Who would think that a cold beginning of March day, would make such a great revealing experience of Berlin for a first-time visitor, like myself? There were 5 of us riding in a group, on Sunday morning, which made it a perfect day for the city's discovery, since it's very low in traffic on Sundays. Our guide Sasha was beyond great, a true Berliner with family stories dating back from the time of the Cold War, and himself having witnessed the Fall of the Wall. The fact that he's been working as a tour guide for over a decade, tells enough about how passionate he is about the job he does. The ride itinerary is very well thought out, covering the major sites of the city, but also some of the less-known points and neighborhoods, which gives you a bigger picture. Overall, very authentic experience of getting to know better such a historically and culturally abundant city, as Berlin definitely is.

Berlin by bike: Suggested itinerary & how to do it

Exploring Berlin by bike is by far the best way to discover Germany’s vibrant capital. Berlin’s bike culture is a cornerstone of its identity, and cycling through Berlin is an immersive experience. Even if you are for just three days in Berlin , renting a bike will show you hidden city corners. After using a bike for several years in Berlin, I decided to share a Berlin-by-bike guide to help you see as much as possible during your stay.

Specifically, you will find a suggested bike itinerary in the following lines, including several points of interest in downtown Berlin. The itinerary is great for first-time and returning visitors to the city. Moreover, you’ll find a map with the bike route, and I’ll share some helpful tips for cycling in the city. Additionally, I’ll write about the best bike rentals in town and the top cycling tours you can book if you don’t feel like riding on your own.

So, let’s see how you can discover Berlin by bike and make the most of your stay.

Berlin by bike: Suggested Itinerary

Although you can rent a bike in Berlin and pedal wherever the roads take you, having an itinerary will help you in sightseeing. I included loads of famous city locations in this cycling itinerary so you won’t miss any key attractions. You can easily conclude the route in one day, but if you feel like taking it easier or need more time for some attractions, you can split it into two or even three days. As a final note, I entered as a starting point the famous Alexanderplatz; apparently, you can start from any other point.

And here’s what to see while riding through downtown Berlin by bike.

Alexanderplatz

Home to the iconic TV Tower (Fernsehturm), the Red City Hall (Rotes Rathaus), and the World Clock, Alexanderplatz is among the city’s biggest squares. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time in town or the tenth: the chances are that you’ll stop at least once at Alexanderplatz. The square is also one of the biggest transportation hubs in the city, and its proximity to places of interest makes it an ideal starting point.

Renting a bike at Alexanderplatz is easy, and as you’ll read later in the guide, it’s probably the best starting point for your bike tours.

Alexanderplatz tip

On a sunny day, don’t miss the opportunity to take the elevator to the top of the TV Tower. The city views are stunning, and you’ll get a good impression of how extended Berlin is. You can book a TV Tower ticket here .

Museum’s island

After leaving Alexanderplatz behind, follow the Karl Liebknecht Strasse toward the Berliner Dom, the city’s famous Cathedral. It will be on your right hand, and exactly opposite, you’ll see the newly built Humboldt Forum. History and art lovers will find paradise on the Museum Island (Museumsinsel). It consists of five museums and even if you aren’t interested in the arts, you should see at least the impressive buildings.

The Museum Island consists of five museums: the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode-Museum, and the Pergamonmuseum. In late 2019, the James Simon Gallery was added to the complex. You can easily spend a whole day on the location, but if you don’t have enough time, visit at least one of them for a glimpse into the city’s history and art tradition.

Museum’s island tip

If you plan to visit two or more museums, consider buying the Museum’s Island pass. It gives you free access to every collection in the complex for a day. You can purchase your Museum’s Island pass here .

The Brandenburg Gate

After visiting the Museum’s island, ride through Unten der Linden, the most famous boulevard of former East Berlin. After a few minutes, you will reach the Pariser Platz, the square where the Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) stands. This neoclassical monument has been a city landmark since the 18th century. That’s actually the spot where Berliners celebrated the Fall of the Wall in 1989. Today, it’s one of the most-visited locations in town.

Straight after crossing the Gate, on your left hand, you’ll see the US Embassy. Straight next to it, you’ll find the impressive Holocaust Memorial commemorating the murdered Jews of Europe. After visiting it, return to the Brandenburg Gate to continue your itinerary.

Brandenburg Gate tip

If you have an interest in wax figures, shortly before the Brandenburg Gate, you’ll come across the Madame Tussauds Museum. The queues are usually long, even off-season, so if visiting it is a must, make sure to pre-book a ticket. You can buy your Madame Tussauds ticket here .

Reichstag & the Government Quarter

Δείτε αυτή τη δημοσίευση στο Instagram.   Η δημοσίευση κοινοποιήθηκε από το χρήστη George Pavlopoulos (@exil_et_royaume)

With the Brandenburg Gate to your back, turn right toward the Reichstag -you can see it already on your right-hand side. Known for its glass dome, the Reichstag hosts the German Federal Parliament and is among the most well-known buildings of the German capital. The vast area next to it is nowadays home to various modern administrative buildings, and it’s called Regierungsviertel or Government Quarter.

For easy-going cycling, that’s a perfect spot for pedaling around stress-free, as there will be no cars around.

Reichstag tip

It’s possible to visit the glass dome of the Reichstag and enjoy panoramic city views. However, you should first enroll with the German authorities and pre-book a narrow time slot for your visit. You can book your Reichstag visit here .

The former West Berlin and the Zoo

After leaving the Reichstag building behind, it’s time to head toward the heart of former West Berlin . Take the Schneidemann Strasse and decide if you’d like to cycle through a park or a main street. For both options, you’ll have to turn left to Tiergarten, one of the biggest metropolitan parks in Europe. The bike lanes will take you all the way to the Berlin Zoo . On the other hand, if you’d rather cycle on the asphalt, the 17 Juni Strasse is a straight, long avenue that’ll bring you to the same location.

The area around the Berlin Zoo is home to famous art institutions, like the Museum for Photography and the c/o Berlin, but also next to the iconic Kurfürstendamm Avenue. Although Kurfürstendamm (or just Ku’damm) has no bike lanes, it’s a fun bike ride, so make sure to see part of it while riding.

As for its most famous landmark, that’s hands down the Gedächtniskirche, the renowned church that is left partly ruined on purpose, as a reminder of World War II.

Berlin Zoo tip

The Zoo of Berlin is one of the largest in Europe, and next to it, you’ll also find an Aquarium. It’s a nice spot to unwind and stroll around; you can book a ticket for the Zoo here .

Potsdamer Platz & Checkpoint Charlie

After getting a good impression of West Berlin’s historic center, it’s time to start cycling again. This time, follow the Tiergarten Strasse and head to Potsdamer Platz . That’s one of Berlin’s commercial centers and the neighborhood of skyscrapers. Don’t imagine anything like New York, but it’s a unique -even a tad faceless- city area. From there, continue to the iconic Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous border-crossing point during the Wall era.

Close to it, you’ll find the Topography of Terror and the Jewish Museum .

Checkpoint Charlie tip

Next to Checkpoint Charlie, you’ll see the Asisi Wall Panorama. That’s a 360-degree art installation created by artist Yadegar Asisi. It depicts an autumn day in West Berlin in the 1980s with a view of the barracks and fortifications of the Wall era. I wrote a separate post about it, and you can read more about the Asisi Wall Panorama here .

Kreuzberg and Neukölln

Berlin has twelve boroughs, and if you are searching for the famous alternative Berlin, it’s time to cycle towards Kreuzberg and Neukölln . It was Kreuzberg that once created Berlin’s identity as a hub for artists and alternative lifestyle -and nowadays, Neukölln is following its steps. The two neighborhoods lie next to each other, and cycling through them will expose you to Berlin’s easygoing rhythms.

The Oranienstrasse serves as an introduction to Kreuzberg, but all the side streets are full of cafes, bars, and creative shops. Ride across the Admiralbrücke and explore the smaller streets of Berlin. Keep in mind that the last stop of this bike tour itinerary is the East Side Gallery, so don’t drive too south!

Kreuzberg and Neukölln tip

Close to both neighborhoods, you can visit the former Tempelhof Airport. A civilian airport for decades, the so-called Tempelhofer Feld has been converted into the city’s biggest open space. You can cycle around the airport, picnic, and enjoy your free time. On a sunny day, everybody seems to have the same idea, so make sure to visit for a break.

The East Side Gallery

So, after exploring the alternative neighborhoods of Berlin, it’s time to head to the last stop of this Berlin bike tour. You’ll drive toward the famous East Side Gallery , the 1.3 km remaining part of the Berlin Wall covered with paintings by international artists. The East Side Gallery is a Berlin landmark and serves as a monument for peace. You can cycle across it, but I recommend locking your bike and strolling along the murals.

After spending time at the East Side Gallery, unlock your bike and drive to Alexanderplatz -or, of course, any other place you want.

East Side Gallery Extra

I’m fond of Polaroids and shot a film roll at East Side Gallery. If you want to see extra impressions from the location in analog format, see my Polaroids from East Side Gallery here .

Berlin by bike: A map for the itinerary

Here, you can find the map for this Berlin bike itinerary . The route described in the previous lines is 21 km long (13 miles) to some of the most iconic spots of Berlin. I suggest you discover the city at your own cycling rhythm and make frequent stops to rest and do sightseeing.

You can save the itinerary to your Google Maps account by clicking on the star and retrieve it anytime.

Organized bike tours in Berlin, Germany

Since the city is so popular for cyclists, it’s not a surprise that several companies offer guided bike tours in Berlin . That said, if cycling on your own is nothing for you, or if you feel like belonging to a group when riding a bike, there are several options for you.

Therefore, in this section of this Berlin by bike guide , I’ll share the best group tours for cyclists visiting Berlin. As you will see, there are plenty of tours to choose from, and they are thematically organized. Most tours start from as little as 32 euros per person, and, of course, the bike is included.

So, here are the top Berlin bike tours you can book right now.

The Sights and Highlights tour will take you to the most important locations in downtown Berlin, including Museum’s Island.

The Berlin Wall and Third Reich . As its name suggests, this Berlin bike tour will take you to historical locations of 20th-century Berlin.

“Top Secret” Berlin . This 17-kilometer bike ride will take you to lesser-known streets of Berlin, but some famous spots are also included.

Evening food tour . This is the priciest (89 euros) but also the longest tour on this list. You will ride a bike and drive to several eateries where you’ll taste delicious local food.

Where to rent a bike in Berlin

You have two bike rental options in Berlin: a shop or a bike-sharing app.

To put things into perspective, more than 70% of Berliners own a bike. As you can imagine, cycling is extremely popular, translating to hundreds of bike rentals spread around the city. If you are up for this option, search for a bike shop near your hotel (there will be plenty) and visit them to rent a bike. Prices vary and usually start from 20-30 euros per day. Have your passport or ID card with you. Alternatively, if you worry about not finding a bike, you can pre-book a bicycle here and pick it up when you arrive.

A bike-sharing app is the easiest way to rent a bike in Berlin. All you have to do is download an app, enter your personal and credit card (or PayPal) details, and search for a bicycle nearby. In this option, you’ll pay as you go, and most companies charge on a 15-minute basis. However, there’s always a threshold if you decide to keep the bike for a day: you won’t usually pay more than 15 euros per day, even if you keep the bike for 20 hours.

The company I prefer

I always use NextBike for renting bikes in Berlin and (mainly) abroad. Since I own a bike, I don’t usually need to rent one, but I have the NextBike app on my smartphone when I want to be spontaneous. With NextBike, you are charged 1 euro for every 15 minutes of riding. However, if you keep the bike for the whole day, you’ll be charged 15 euros. That’s extremely helpful if you want to stop several times (for a museum visit, a coffee, to rest).

Other companies

There are plenty of companies offering similar services in Berlin. Equally popular is the Donkey Republic and Tier , which specializes in e-bikes.

Berlin by bike: Tips for your cycling tours around the city

In this final section, I’ll add some useful tips for your bike tours in Berlin . Most of these tips are for your safety, but some of them will also inform you of what to expect when riding your bike in Berlin.

  • Berlin has an extended network of bike lanes. Whenever it is available, drive to your lane and avoid being directly on the street.
  • Drive on the right side of your lane. This allows faster cyclists (or those in a rush) to overtake.
  • Respect the traffic lights. Berlin has dedicated traffic lights for the bikes. Always keep an eye on them because some are in big junctions.
  • It is always advised to wear a helmet.
  • Drive slowly. Cycling in a foreign city can be more challenging than riding in your hometown. Apart from that, a slower pace will allow you to see more things around you.
  • Berlin is a flat but windy city. Therefore, cycling is pure joy. Be prepared for some wind, though.
  • Raise your hand when you take a turn. Whenever you are ready to turn right or left, show it with your hand. Lift your hand if you plan to stop.

Berlin by bike: conclusion

Berlin is one of the most bike-friendly European cities. Its flat surface and the extended infrastructure make the city a paradise for cyclists. In addition, cycling is probably the most sustainable and eco-friendly way of transportation, and it lets you discover the city at your own pace.

As a cyclist, I always enjoyed riding a bike in Berlin -actually, much more than any other place. Combined with the wealth of sightseeing, a bicycle is actually the sweetest way to explore a city. So, rent a bike, follow this itinerary, and enjoy Berlin’s beauty and fresh air.

Cycling Berlin’s lively street art & urban art scene

Berlin has always been a mecca for creatives from around the world. The city’s public spaces are alive with the works of artists who strive to define their own ideas of beauty and creativity.

How and where does art and creativity develop in Berlin? It’s all about atmosphere and lifestyle , creativity in a larger context, and influencing and sculpting the urban environment. Where a guerrilla art sculpture stands today, the next luxury loft apartment could take its place tomorrow.

Street Art Mecca Berlin

Whether in Kreuzberg, Wedding or Mitte, every vacant lot or building facade has the potential to become an exhibition space. From classic street art to urban farming, on this bike tour we visit projects that push and blur the boundaries between what is sanctioned and what is illegal.

Street Art Bike Tour in Mitte & Prenzlauer Berg

We start off in lively Prenzlauer Berg and give you a short introduction to the history of Berlin’s street art scene. We show you some of the different techniques artists use, like stencils, stickers, paste-ups etc. before we go on to explore Mitte, Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg – always looking for the latest artworks, be it graffiti, murals, stencils or sculptures.

Urban Art Tour in Friedrichshain

Another hotspot for street art in Berlin is the funky East Berlin neighbourhood of Friedrichshain. There are a rich array of artworks to discover here on the graffiti covered walls of the former railway workshop RAW, in murals by street art greats like El Bocho and Cranio around Holzmarkt and of course in the world-famous murals of the East Side Gallery, painted on 1.3 kilometres of original Berlin Wall that still runs along the river Spree.

Kreuzberg Street Art by Bike

Crossing the Spree you will find some of Berlin’s most famous murals in the multi-cultural neighbourhood of Kreuzberg. Street art is ubiquitous here, with large-scale murals by international artists like BLU, Herakut, Victor Ash and ROA jostling alongside smaller scale but nonetheless exciting bursts of local graffiti and other forms of urban art.

On this tour we explore even the most surprising corners of this vibrant scene.. Are you interested in the Street Art Bicycle Tour Berlin? – Request private tour

What you will see on our Street Art Bike Tour Berlin?

On this tour we will explore Berlin’s vibrant art scene beyond museums and galleries.. There is no fixed route, as Street Art is ephemeral: the patterns of urban creativity pulse and flow in constantly changing expressions that we follow as they emerge and vanish and emerge into something else altogether.

  • Wall of Fame in Berlin Mauerpark
  • RAW with Urban Spree gallery in Berlin Friedrichshain
  • East-Side-Gallery and Holzmarkt

self cycling tour to see the top things to do in berlin

Discover the top Berlin attractions by bike! Follow this self guided bike tour and trace the story of the Berlin Wall by bike with our free map.

The Berlin Wall is one of the top things to do and must-see attractions in Berlin. Most people (including us when we first moved here) assumed that the East Side Gallery is it. But the East Side Gallery is only a small fragment of the whole Berlin Wall history.

To truly understand the significance behind the Berlin Wall and immerse yourself in its history, you have to follow the trails of the Berlin Wall by bike.

This self guided Berlin Wall tour will follow the remnants of the wall that cut through Berlin and divided it into east and west. It’s also a great way to see the best attractions in the city over a weekend.

Best Bike Rental in Berlin: Bike Sharing

Don’t have a bike? Don’t worry! You can easily rent a bike in Berlin with bike sharing. If you’re looking for the best and cheapest bike share to use for touring Berlin, make sure to read our Berlin Bike Sharing Guide .

Berlin Wall Map: Cycling the Perimeter of the Berlin Wall

This Berlin Wall tour is around 25 kilometres. Feel free to do it in 1 day or stretch it over a 2 to 3 day itinerary. Besides following the story of the Berlin Wall, you’ll also get to see most of the top attractions in Berlin.

What this bike tour won’t do, is take you around the entire perimeter of the Berlin Wall. You will need a few days to do that and maybe even some tips from Lance Armstrong (just kidding).

We will start with some Berlin Wall history and why it was important because what is a tour without some interesting, nerdy facts. But if you’re just in it for the exercise, then skip straight to the Berlin Wall Bike Route Map .

A quick disclaimer here! We are not historians. We didn’t even enjoy history as a subject at school (just being honest here, it’s a disclaimer after all).

So this is a short, summarised version of what we understand of the Berlin Wall history based on tours we’ve been on and what we’ve read. If you’d like to delve more into the nitty gritty facts, then we suggest you download the Berlin Wall app (it’s free) or go on one of the many Berlin Wall tours in the city.

The Berlin Wall History Simplified

Why is the berlin wall famous.

We asked ourselves the same question when we first visited Berlin. It’s actually a really good question to ask. If you look at the map below, you’ll see a short black dash. That’s the size of the Berlin Wall in comparison to the long 3 lines that represent the Iron Curtain.

map from wikimedia commons showing where the iron curtain divided europe into eastern and western europe

If you don’t remember what the Iron Curtain was (we didn’t), it’s the barrier that divided the ENTIRE Europe into east and west after World War II. Eastern Europe was under controlled, communist rule, whereas the west was considered ‘free’ and democratic.

So why was the Berlin Wall specifically, so important?

Why Was The Berlin Wall Important?

If you look at the above map with the black lines again, you’ll notice that Germany at the time, was divided into east and west as well. You can see the division of Germany in the map below, with Berlin located on the East Germany side.

map of how germany as a country as divided into east and west germany during the cold war

What made Berlin unique was that the city itself was also divided into east and west. Sounds simple? Well in theory, yes. But back then, West Berlin was like a little democratic island floating in the middle of a communist ocean. If you made it to the island, then you would have the freedom of movement into Western Europe as well.

And because of this, Berlin became the ‘hole in the wall’ for people to cross through to the west and escape communist rule. There was no physical barrier separating east and west Berlin at the time, so escaping was pretty easy.

It was so easy in fact, that in the 10 years between 1949 to 1959, over 2 million people left East Germany. That’s equivalent to 57% of Berlin’s current population!

Why Was The Berlin Wall Built?

The leaders of East Germany began to worry, of course. So overnight (in August 1961), they built a wall around Berlin to prevent people from leaving. At first, the wall was just a simple barbed wire fence. But over time the Berlin Wall was rebuilt with concrete blocks 3.6 meters high.

The wall was very effective in ‘plugging the hole’ that was Berlin. But as a consequence, it also ended up separating families, friends and lovers that lived on either side for almost 30 years.

How Long Was The Berlin Wall and Where Was The Berlin Wall?

Many people think that the Berlin Wall was built as a straight line, dissecting east and west. But the wall was in fact built ‘around’ West Berlin.

map of berlin wall dividing east and west berlin

It was ‘an island’ remember, so the East German leaders had to build around West Berlin to prevent people entering from all sides.

The entire length of the Berlin Wall enclosing the perimeter of West Berlin was 155 kilometres long.

The Berlin Wall Now: Does Any Part Of The Original Berlin Wall Still Exist Today

best street art on the east side gallery

Yes, there are a number of places in the city where you can still see pieces of the original Berlin Wall standing, besides the East Side Gallery:

  • In the park Schlesischer Busch;
  • At Schilling Bridge;
  • At Engelbecken (park with a man-made lake);
  • In Niederkirchnerstrasse in front of the Topography of Terror;
  • In Erna-Berger-Strasse next to the DDR Watchtower;
  • At the Federal Ministry for Environmental, Nature Conservation and Nuclear; Safety building in Potsdamer Platz;
  • Inside the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus close to the Reichstag building.

You’ll see some of these original remnants on this self guided bike tour of the Berlin Wall.

To get the full list of locations of the original Berlin Wall, download the Berlin Wall app .

When Did The Berlin Wall Fall?

The wall finally came down on the 9 November 1989 after separating east and west Berlin for 28 years, 2 months and 28 days.

It is estimated that around 5,000 people escaped over, through or under the wall during the 28+ years it stood. Around 200 were killed trying to escape.

Related Guide: If you’re doing this self-guided Berlin Wall tour in spring (April and May), then make sure you read our Cherry Blossoms in Berlin guide. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, more than 9,000 cherry blossom trees were planted where the Berlin Wall once stood.

Berlin Wall Underground Tour

If you found the story of the Berlin Wall as fascinating as we did, we highly recommend going on the Berlin Wall Underground Tour. That’s how we finally pieced together and understood the story of the Berlin Wall.

You will be literally taken under Berlin and shown how people escaped to West Berlin from underground ( Berlin Unterwelten Tour M ).

The duration of the tour is 2 hours and costs €15. It was honestly the best €15 we’ve ever spent on any tour. Not only was it super informative and interesting. It was also explained so well that even history retards like us understood.

Where To Buy Berlin Underground Tour Tickets

The only tricky thing about this tour is buying the tickets. You can’t buy them online so you have to rough it old school. But before you run off to buy your tickets, make sure to check which tour you want to go on.

The Berlin Unterwelten offers 5 different underground tours. Each tour has a specific theme and are only available on certain dates.

Make sure that the tour you want to go on is available on the day you buy your tickets. You can only buy tickets from the Berlin Underground ticket office on the day of the tour. That means you can’t buy tickets in advance for another day.

It is inconvenient but completely worth it, we promise!

Berlin bike and cycling etiquette.

Cycling in Berlin is pretty easy. There are bicycle lanes throughout most of the city. Just follow these simple cycling rules and you’ll have a safe and pleasant ride.

‘Do’ Follow Rules When Cycling in Berlin

  • Cycle in the bicycle lane and when that is unavailable, on the road as close to the right side as possible.
  • Obey the bicycle traffic lights and if there aren’t any, yield before crossing intersections.
  • Keep to the right side of the bicycle lane and only move to the left when overtaking (i.e. ride in single file).
  • Use arm signals to indicate  before  turning left or right: point left with your left arm or point right with your right arm before turning.
  • When making an unexpected stop, raise one hand straight up to indicate that you will be stopping.

‘Don’t’ Rules When Cycling in Berlin

  • Don’t use your cellphone while cycling (use a cellphone holder if you need GPS).
  • Don’t wear earphones while cycling. It’s a fineable offence.
  • Don’t drink or be under the influence and cycle.
  • Don’t cycle on the Autobahn (Germany’s high speed highway). It’s illegal.

These are just some of the basic rules for cycling in Germany. Make sure you’re also familiar with the 24  bike road rules for cycling in Germany  to avoid traffic fines and bike safely.

Berlin Wall Bike Route Map: Mauerweg

Our Berlin Wall tour by bike goes in an anti-clockwise direction, from the south of the city towards the north. Feel free to do it the other way around if it is closer to your location.

1. Spreepark

Our first stop Berlin attraction is Spreepark. Back in the 1960s, it was a theme park called Kulturpark Plänterwald Berlin . It’s part of our Berlin Wall tour because it was the only permanent amusement park in East Germany, when it was under communist rule.

It may be slowly rotting away now. But back then it was a major Berlin attraction and a status symbol to visit the amusement park.

It is forbidden to enter the theme park now, but you can cycle around it and see some of the abandoned rides.

abandoned amusement park in east germany called spreepark

2. Soviet Memorial Park

From Spreepark, it’s a short 9 minute cycle (2.6km) to the Soviet Memorial Park.

the soviet memorial park

The memorial was built just before East Germany was taken over by communist rule. It was built to commemorate the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who died fighting against the Nazis during World War II.

To this day, politicians and visitors come here to lay wreaths in honour of the fallen soldiers and the liberation of Berlin.

3. DDR Watchtower in Schlesischer Busch

It’s another 9 minute cycle (2.4km) to Schlesischer Busch. Here you’ll see one of the GDR Watchtowers that manned the borders between east and west Berlin.

Schlesischer Busch is now a popular park for barbecues, but back then it was part of the “death strip”.

Tip : You can see the remains of the original Berlin Wall around Schlesischer Busch. Can you spot them?

4. Oberbaum Bridge (Oberbaumbrücke)

From Schlesischer Busch, it’s a 7 minute ride (2.1km) to our next Berlin attraction, Oberbaumbrücke.

view of oberbaumbrucke in berlin

Oberbaum Bridge is probably one of the most picturesque bridge in Berlin. But back when the Berlin Wall was still up, it was a landmark of division.

This bridge connects the former East Berlin district of Friedrichshain with Kreuzberg. Oberbaumbrücke was always heavily patrolled by armed guards. It was also one of the crossover checkpoints where people could cross from west to east only.

Today, cars and bicycles run on the lower part of this double-decker bridge and U-Bahn trains on the second level.

It’s also the home to one of the most popular nightclubs in Berlin, Watergate.

5. East Side Gallery

Our Berlin Wall tour by bike continues a short ride left to the East Side Gallery (3 minute ride, 650 meters).

berlin wall famous kiss graffiti

The East Side Gallery is the most famous attraction in Berlin. More than 3 million visitors travel to Berlin every year to see it in person. It’s popular because it’s the longest part of the Berlin Wall that remains intact. At 1.3 kilometres long, it’s also the world’s largest open air gallery.

East Side Gallery was created one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall. 118 artists from 21 countries came to Berlin to create more than a 100 murals along the wall.

The artists deliberately painted on the east side of the wall to commemorate the east’s newfound freedom of expression.

Tip : Take a break from your bike and walk along the East Side Gallery instead. Enjoy the artwork, take as many photos as you like, but please do not write or paint on the wall. And if you’re looking for other instagrammable places in Berlin. Then make sure you read our Best Photo Spots in Berlin guide for photography inspiration and ideas.

6. Checkpoint Charlie

From East Side Gallery, you’ll need to cycle for around 20 minutes (5km) to Checkpoint Charlie, one of the most well-known Berlin attractions.

Tip : On your way to Checkpoint Charlie you’ll cross Schillingbrücke. This is another place where you can spot the last remaining traces of the original Berlin Wall.

charlie checkpoint is a top things to do in berlin

Ever wondered where the name “Checkpoint Charlie” came from?

Checkpoint Charlie was one of 3 checkpoints that belonged to the West. They were simply named Checkpoint A, Checkpoint B and Checkpoint C. Overtime it became Checkpoint Alpha, Checkpoint Bravo and Checkpoint Charlie to avoid confusion.

Interesting facts about Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie was an important part of the Berlin Wall history for a few reasons:

  • It was the only checkpoint that allowed foreigners, diplomats and military personnel to pass from west to east.
  • The world thought World War III was about to start when 30 tanks congregated here as tensions rose between America and the Soviet Union.
  • There were many escape attempts here, some successful others not.
  • When the fall of the Berlin wall was announced on 9 November 1989, thousands of East Germans flooded through its gates to the west.
  • The guardhouse you now see at Checkpoint Charlie is only a replica. The original guardhouse was dismantled in 1990. But you can see it if you go to the Allied Museum in Berlin.

For more history on the Berlin Wall, visit the Berlin Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie . Buy your tickets online to skip the queue.

Tip : You can see an original piece of the Berlin Wall in Niederkirchnerstrasse in front of the Topography of Terror.

7. DDR Watchtower at Potsdamer Platz

You’re more than half way on this Berlin Wall cycle tour! It’s a short 5 minute cycle (1.4 km) to our next stop, the DDR Watchtower at Potsdamer Platz.

The DDR Watchtower is probably one of the lesser known, hidden Berlin attractions so make sure to see it.

one of the last GDR watchtowers of the berlin wall history tour

Did you know that there were more than 300 watchtowers on the Berlin Wall border? Now only less than 10 remain. The DDR watchtower at Potsdamer Platz is one of them.

Two border patrol soldiers would man towers like these on 8 hour shifts. They would look through the small windows and if needed, fire through the rifle loopholes from the tower.

The shooting range of this tower in particular, stretched from Tiergarten all the way to Brandenburg Gate. That’s over 2 kilometres!

You can travel back in time and go see the inside of this watchtower. The tickets costs €3.50 and the opening hours are everyday between 11:00 to 17:00, except when it rains.

Tip : You can find more traces of the original Berlin Wall around the DDR Watchtower.

8. Holocaust Memorial

The next Berlin attraction is the Holocaust Memorial. It’s another 6 minutes 6 minute bike ride (1km) from the DDR Watchtower.

holocaust jewish memorial in berlin bike tour

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe or Holocaust Memorial, commemorates the 6 million Jewish victims who died during the Nazi genocide of World War II.

The memorial is located close to Brandenburg Gate, on a stretch of the former “death strip” where the Berlin Wall once stood. A total of 2,711 rectangular concrete blocks are laid out in a grid formation, resembling tombstones.

Besides walking between the concrete blocks, you can also visit the information centre under the memorial.

Tip : The Holocaust Memorial is a place of contemplation and remembrance. Please be mindful of this by not climbing the blocks and being respectful when taking photos.

9. Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburg Tor)

The most iconic landmark and attraction in Berlin, Brandenburg Gate, is just a short 600 metres (2 minute cycle) from the Holocaust Memorial.

brandenburg gate is one of the must-see attractions in berlin

This monument played a big part of the Berlin Wall story. As it was in front of the Brandenburg Tor, that President Ronald Reagan gave his infamous speech to ‘Tear down this wall’.

Interesting facts about Brandenburg Gate

  • In the 18th century, people had to walk through one of Brandenburg Gate’s 5 passages according to their status. The central, widest passage was reserved for royalty. The adjacent passages for aristocrats and ordinary citizens could only use the outer passages
  • The sculpture on top of Brandenburg Tor is called The Quadriga . It represents the Goddess of Victory
  • Brandenburg Gate was “no man’s land” during the years of the Berlin Wall as it was inaccessible by both East and West Germans

10. Reichstag

Just a hop and and a skip away is the next iconic Berlin attraction, the Reichstag Parliamentary Building. Bring your bike along as you’ll need it for your last two destinations.

reichstag is a free berlin tour

The Reichstag is one of the most important buildings in Berlin today. But during the period of the divided Berlin, it was pretty much a forgotten building.

The parliamentary building was abandoned for almost 70 years before the German parliament returned to the Reichstag 10 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Tip : You can go see the inside of the Reichstag building for yourself and it’s completely FREE! We highly recommend it if you have some extra time in Berlin. The tour is free but you have to book your spots in advance.

If it’s too late to book a tour for the Reichstag, you can always experience it virtually on this amazing virtual tour of the Reichstag Building in Berlin. This is also free.

11. Visitor Centre Berlin Wall Memorial

Our Berlin Wall tour will not be complete without visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial. It’s a short 10 minute cycle (3km) north from the Reichstag Building.

the visitor centre berlin wall memorial is along the berlin wall tour

It’s a must-visit attraction in Berlin if you’re hungry for more Berlin Wall history. It exhibits some of the most comprehensive information about the Berlin Wall. From its construction to how it affected the daily lives of Berliners who lived during those times.

12. Bose Bridge (Bösebrücke)

The last destination of our Berlin Wall tour is Bösebrücke. It’s a 15 minute cycle (4km) from the Berlin Wall Memorial.

On the night when the fall of the Berlin Wall was announced, the Bose Bridge border crossing was one of the first places where the Berlin Wall “cracked”.

Thousands of people gathered here on 9 November 1989, demanding to cross over to the west. At first only a few were let through. But after the announcement was made, thousands of East Germans flooded through the border crossing, over Bose Bridge and were welcomed enthusiastically on West Berlin.

Tip : The Berlin Wall trail runs below Bösebrücke along what was once the border patrol road.

Brief History of Berlin

Berlin’s history is fascinating and complex, and you can see traces of it everywhere you go. From the iconic Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Wall to the former Nazi headquarters and Checkpoint Charlie, you can learn about the city’s turbulent past and how it shaped its present. You can also visit some of the world’s best museums, such as the Pergamon Museum, which houses ancient treasures from Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece, or the Jewish Museum, which tells the story of Jewish life and culture in Germany.

Berlin Culture- Perfect for a Berlin city break?

Berlin is also a cultural hotspot, with a vibrant art scene, a rich musical heritage, and a diverse population. You can admire street art and graffiti in areas like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, or visit some of the many galleries and museums that showcase contemporary art. You can also enjoy classical music at the Berlin Philharmonic, or catch a show at one of the many theatres and opera houses. And don’t forget to explore the different neighborhoods of Berlin, each with its character and charm.

Berlin City Break Nightlife

If you are looking for a good time, Berlin has plenty to offer. The city is famous for its nightlife, with some of the best clubs, bars, and pubs in Europe. You can dance until dawn at legendary venues like Berghain, Tresor, or Watergate, or chill out at a cozy beer garden or a trendy cocktail bar. You can also sample some of the delicious food that Berlin has to offer, from traditional German dishes like currywurst and schnitzel to international cuisine from Turkish, Vietnamese, or Indian restaurants.

Berlin is a city that never sleeps, but if you need a break from the hustle and bustle, you can also find some green spaces and relaxing spots. You can take a stroll along the Spree River, or visit one of the many parks and gardens that dot the city.

How many days is ideal in Berlin?

If it is your first time in Berlin I suggest coming for a minimum of 3 days if you want to see some of the main attractions, but 4- 5 days in Berlin if you want to get a sense of the culture, history, and get the full Berlin city break experience.

Is Berlin a walkable city?

Berlin is extremely walkable and easy to get around. If you are not going to take public transit there are also a lot of escooters, and bikes around the city. Making it easy to get around to most of the things to do in Berlin without having to have a car or taxi.

Public transport

Berlin has an extensive and efficient public transport system that includes buses, trams, subways (U-Bahn), and trains (S-Bahn). You can buy tickets at stations, machines, or online, and use them for any mode of transport within the same zone. A single ticket costs 2.90 euros for zones AB, which covers most of the city center. You can also buy day tickets, weekly tickets, or monthly passes for more savings. Remember to validate your ticket before boarding or you might face a fine.

Berlin is a bike-friendly city with many bike lanes, paths, and rental services. You can rent a bike from one of the many shops or stations around the city, or use an app like Nextbike or Donkey Republic to find and unlock a bike nearby. The average price for renting a bike is 1 euro per 30 minutes or 12 euros per day. Biking is a great way to explore the city at your own pace and enjoy the scenery.

If you prefer a more comfortable and convenient way to travel, you can always hail a taxi or use an app like Free Now or Uber to book one. Taxis are easy to find in most areas of the city, especially near tourist attractions, hotels, and train stations. The base fare is 3.90 euros and then 2 euros per kilometer. You can pay by cash or card, and tip around 10% if you are satisfied with the service. I preferred using Uber, especially after going out at night.

What part of Berlin is the best to stay in?

This is the historical and cultural center of Berlin, where you can find many famous landmarks, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, the Museum Island, and the Alexanderplatz. Mitte is also home to many government buildings, embassies, and business offices. If you want to be close to the main sights and enjoy a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere, Mitte is a great choice. However, it can also be crowded, noisy, and expensive.

This is the alternative and multicultural heart of Berlin, where you can find many artists, students, immigrants, and activists. Kreuzberg is known for its vibrant nightlife, street art, ethnic cuisine, and creative scene. If you want to experience the edgy and diverse side of Berlin, Kreuzberg is a good option. However, it can also be chaotic, dirty, and unsafe.

Prenzlauer Berg

This is the trendy and hipster district of Berlin, where you can find many cafes, bars, boutiques, and galleries. Prenzlauer Berg is popular among young professionals, families, and ex-pats. My friend from high school moved here four years ago and loves it. It has a relaxed and friendly vibe, with many green spaces and parks. If you want to enjoy a cozy and stylish neighborhood with a lot of charm, this is the perfect area if you find a Vrbo in the area.

Charlottenburg

This is the elegant and upscale area of Berlin, where you can find many luxury hotels, shops, and restaurants. Charlottenburg is also rich in history and culture, with attractions such as the Charlottenburg Palace, the Kurfürstendamm Boulevard, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. However, it can also be boring, snobby, and far from the center.

This is the emerging and dynamic part of Berlin, where you can find many young people, immigrants, and artists. Neukölln is known for its cheap rents, diverse culture, and lively nightlife. If you want to discover a new and exciting side of Berlin that is constantly changing and evolving, Neukölln is a good option. However, it can also be noisy, dirty, and dangerous.

What is the best month to visit Berlin?

I would say May through September is the perfect time to visit Berlin. Berlin comes alive in the summer, with its beer gardens, outdoor markets, and ample green spaces to enjoy. Also, there are many events and festivals during this time. The sun also sets after 10 pm in the summer which makes it great for you to have a lot of time to explore Berlin.

Although, I also think Berlin during the holidays and Christmas markets in Germany are special and well worth a visit in December!

Can I visit Berlin without speaking German?

If a language barrier is holding you up to booking your Berlin city break, don’t let that stop you. I love Berlin and I have been more than 5 times now. Don’t worry if you don’t speak German there are many expats, as well as English speakers. So I recommend just downloading the Google Translate app just in case, but you have nothing to worry about.

Berlin City Break – Things to do

Fat tire tours – berlin city bike tour .

One of the first things I would do is take a tour of Berlin. If you want a great overview of Berlin, I recommend taking a Berlin City Bike Tour with Fat Tire Tours. It was an amazing experience to check out the main attractions of the city by bike, but also bike to some places that would be a little off the beaten path for me. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the city from learning about Nazi Germany, as well as the Cold War to incorporating modern cultural elements in the tour it was eye-opening

They offer a 3-hour city tour and a 6-hour city tour, food tours, Cold War-specific tours, and more.

Berlin TV Tower and Rotating Dining Experience

After a few visits to Berlin, I finally decided to make it my mission to head to the top of the Berlin TV tower and it was so worth it. The Berlin TV Tower stands 368 meters high above the city. It is the highest building open to the public in Europe. It was inaugurated on October 3 1969 in East Germany, built as a symbol to show the world the Communist party was superior to the rest of the West.

After you take in the views, dine at the Sphere restaurant which rotates 207 meters above the city! They serve amazing traditional foods with a modern twist, and there is also Bar 203 if you rather just have a drink. At the end or beginning you can also enjoy a VR experience showing the evolution of Berlin since ancient history.

Finally, enjoy Alexanderplatz located at the base of the Berlin TV Tower. There are many shops, the square also has the World Clock, and the Fountain of Friendship.

Explore Museum Island

One of the most famous places to visit museums is Berlin, Germany. They even have a whole island meant for museum lovers called “Museum Island”. It is also recognized by UNESCO.

World-class museums for travelers looking to experience a range of history, culture, art, architecture, and more. I happened across this, but actually, the first Sunday of the month offers a free museum day throughout Berlin. However, if you know you will be there in advance, book the tickets online (even for free or not) because the most popular museums do sell out!

Altes Museum

Altes Museum is the first museum on museum island. It was built in 1825 by order of King Frederick 3 of Prussia. The Altes Museum houses the Antikensammlung Collection, one of the most important collections of classical art in the world. Hours: 10 am – 6 pm Tuesday- Sunday, Closed Monday

Neues Museum

The Neues Museum is located in a historic building built in 1843 and houses art from ancient Egypt and artifacts from the Stone Age. The building is worth visiting alone, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list for its outstanding architecture. It is the second oldest museum on Museum Island. Hours: 10 am – 6 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Thursday 10 am – 6 pm.

Pergamonmuseum

Pergamonmuseum is the most popular museum in Berlin. So definitely make sure to reserve this in advance. The museum includes artifacts from antiquity in Iran, Egypt, etc. Currently, the north wing will be closed for refurbishment until 2025. Hours: 10 am – 6 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Thursday 10 am – 6 pm.

Bode Museum

Bode Museum houses one of the largest medieval art collections as well as Byzantine art.

Alte Nationalgalerie

Alte Nationalgalerie is the national art gallery that was originally a contemporary art gallery, and now you can see 19th-century paintings as well as sculptures. Hours: 10 AM – 6 PM CLOSED Mondays

Berlin Cathedral

While I did not get to go inside the Berlin Dom or Berlin Cathedral, it costs 10 euros and 6.50 euros with the Berlin Welcome Card. Berlin Cathedral is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. It is a magnificent example of neo-Renaissance architecture, with a dome that rises 98 meters above the ground. The cathedral was built between 1894 and 1905, and it houses a museum, a crypt, and an organ with over 7000 pipes. The cathedral is open daily from 9 am to 8 pm, except on Mondays when it closes at 5 pm. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year.

See Berlin By Boat

Berlin is a city with a rich history and culture, but also a modern and vibrant metropolis. One of the best ways to explore its diverse attractions is by boat. You can enjoy a relaxing and scenic cruise along the Spree River, passing by landmarks such as the Reichstag, the Museum Island, the Berlin Cathedral, and the East Side Gallery. You can also admire the architecture and urban landscape of Berlin from a different perspective, and learn more about its past and present from the onboard commentary. A boat tour of Berlin is a great option for anyone who wants to see the city in a short time and in a comfortable way. Tours last about an hour, some 2 hours, and range in price from USD 25 and up.

Charlottenburg Palace

Charlottenburg Palace is a Baroque palace in Berlin, Germany. It was built at the end of the 17th century by Sophie Charlotte, the wife of Frederick I, the first king of Prussia. The palace was expanded several times in the 18th century and has rich interior decoration in Baroque and Rococo styles. The palace also has a large formal garden with a belvedere, a mausoleum, a theatre, and a pavilion. Charlottenburg Palace is a major tourist attraction and a cultural heritage site.

  • Opening hours: 10.00 – 17.00 (all days except Monday).
  • The cost of visiting the castle: adult – 19 euros, child (under 18 years) – 15 euros. Please note that when buying tickets online (through the official website), tickets will cost 2 euros less. Entrance to the park is free.

Free things to do for a Berlin City Break

Take a free walking tour .

If you are visiting Berlin and want to explore the city without spending a lot of money, you might want to consider taking a free walking tour. A free walking tour is a guided tour that does not have a fixed price, but instead relies on tips from the participants. You can join a free walking tour by booking online or showing up at the meeting point. Many free walking tours in Berlin cover different topics and areas, such as the history of Berlin, the street art scene, the Third Reich, and more. You can find more information about free walking tours in Berlin on websites like freetour.com or freewalkersberlin.com. Taking a free walking tour is a great way to learn more about the city, meet new people, and have fun!

The Reichstag

The Reichstag building is a historic government building in Berlin that has been the seat of the German Bundestag since 1999. It was built from 1884 to 1894 by Paul Wallot in a Neo-Renaissance style. The building has a large glass dome that offers a panoramic view of the city. If you want to visit the roof and the dome, you need to register online in advance and go through a security check. The visit is free and includes an audio guide that explains the history and functions of the Reichstag.

The Reichstag building is more than just a tourist attraction. It is also a symbol of German democracy and history. The building witnessed many important events, such as the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871, the Reichstag fire in 1933, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the reunification of Germany in 1990. The building was renovated by British architect Norman Foster after reunification, who added the modern glass dome as a contrast to the old structure. The dome also symbolizes transparency and openness, as visitors can look down at the plenary hall where lawmakers debate and vote.

The Reichstag building is open every day from 8:00 am to midnight, with the last admission at 10:00 pm. You can register online up to three months in advance or on the same day at the service center near the building. It is required to bring proof of your identity for security purposes. You can also book a guided tour of the building or a visit to the roof garden restaurant. For more information, visit https://www.bundestag.de/en/visittheBundestag .

Jewish Museum Berlin

If you are interested in learning more about the history and memory of the Holocaust, you might want to visit one of the museums dedicated to this topic. One of them is the **Jewish Museum Berlin**, which has a core exhibition that explores the Jewish history and culture in Germany from the Middle Ages to the present day, as well as temporary exhibitions that focus on specific aspects of the Holocaust and its aftermath.

The Jewish Museum Berlin is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm, except for some Jewish holidays and Christmas Eve. Admission to the core exhibition is free for everyone, while the temporary exhibitions cost 8 € at the regular rate or 3 € at the reduced rate. Children and teenagers under 18 get in free, as do a few other visitor categories. You can find more information on their website or buy a ticket online.

The Berlin Wall Memorial

Another museum that you can visit is the **Berlin Wall Memorial**, which commemorates the division of Berlin by the wall and its victims. The memorial consists of an outdoor exhibition on Bernauer Strasse, where you can see the remains of the wall and other historical traces, as well as a documentation center and a visitor center that provide information and education about the wall and its impact on the people of Berlin. The outdoor exhibition is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm, while the documentation center and the visitor center are open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm. Admission to the memorial is free for everyone.

Don’t miss a chance to walk along the East Side Gallery in Berlin this is the largest section of the Berlin Wall still standing and there is amazing street art here as well.

Topography of Terror

One day I was looking for free things to do in Berlin and this popped up. I am so glad it did. The Topography of Terror is a museum in Berlin that documents and commemorates the crimes committed by the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945. It is situated on the former site of the central institutions of Nazi persecution and terror: the headquarters of the Secret State Police (Gestapo), the SS, and the Reich Security Main Office. These buildings were the nerve center of the Nazi terror apparatus, where orders were issued, reports were received and victims were interrogated, tortured, and executed.

The museum consists of two parts: an indoor exhibition and an outdoor exhibition. The indoor exhibition covers 800 square meters and displays more than 800 photos, documents, and media stations that illustrate the history of Nazi terror and its impact on individuals and society. The Topography of Terror is a place of remembrance and education that aims to inform visitors about the Nazi dictatorship and its crimes, as well as to raise awareness of the dangers of dictatorship and violence in general.

Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie was named by the Western Allies, who also had Checkpoint Alpha and Bravo along the border. It was located on Friedrichstrasse, a historic street in the American-occupied city center. Checkpoint Charlie was the only place where East Germany allowed foreign diplomats, military personnel, and tourists to enter or leave East Berlin. The Allies stationed their guards there to ensure their access to the Soviet sector. The Allied side of Checkpoint Charlie was very simple, consisting of a small shack and some sandbags. The East German side was more elaborate, with guard towers, barriers, and a shed where vehicles were searched for fugitives.

Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War and the division of Germany. It attracted many visitors and protesters, who often expressed their solidarity with the people of East Berlin or their opposition to the Wall. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Checkpoint Charlie was dismantled and removed. Today, there is a replica of the original guardhouse and a museum that displays artifacts and stories related to the checkpoint and the Cold War.

Gendarmenmarkt

Is a picturesque square known for the iconic three buildings that surround it. It is surrounded by three historic buildings: the French Cathedral, the German Cathedral, and the Concert Hall. Gendarmenmarkt is a popular tourist attraction because of its beautiful architecture and cultural events. You can visit Gendarmenmarkt to admire the monuments, enjoy a concert or explore the Christmas market in winter.

Visit Berlin Markets

Mauerpark Flea Market: This is the most popular and crowded flea market in Berlin and for good reason. You can find everything from antiques and vinyl records to art and jewelry. There’s also live music, karaoke, and street performers to keep you entertained. It’s open every Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Markthalle Neun: This is a historic market hall that hosts different themed markets throughout the week. You can find organic produce, artisan cheese, fresh bread, and more. My favorite is Street Food Thursday, where you can sample cuisines from all over the world. It’s open from Monday to Saturday, with varying hours depending on the day.

Nowkoelln Flowmarkt: This is a hip and trendy flea market that attracts young and creative people. You can find clothes, books, accessories, and more. It’s also a great place to chill by the canal and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s open every second and fourth Sunday of the month from 10 am to 5 pm.

Kollwitzplatz Farmers Market is a great farmers market I went to in Prenzlauer Berg. It had over 50 vendors and a lot of great food. Come here and grab a coffee or crepe!

Berlin City Parks

I was surprised to learn Berlin is one of the greenest cities in Europe! There are over 25000 parks and over 1 million trees in the city!

The Tiergarten is one of the most famous parks and comes alive in the summer. Take a bike and cycle through the park, see the victory statue, and even go to one of the best beer gardens in Berlin.

The Tiergarten is like a green oasis in the middle of the urban jungle! The Tiergarten was once a royal hunting ground, but now it’s open to everyone who wants to relax, have fun or learn something new. There are many monuments, museums, and landmarks in and around the park, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Victory Column, and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. You can also find a lovely beer garden by a lake, where you can taste some local specialties.

I had a wonderful time walking around the park, admiring the trees, flowers, and animals. The Tiergarten is a must-see for anyone who visits Berlin!

Treptower Park

If you love nature and history, you should visit Treptower Park in Berlin. It is a beautiful park along the river Spree, where you can enjoy the sun, the water, and the greenery. You can also see the impressive Soviet War Memorial, the Archenhold Observatory, and the former Spreepark amusement park. Treptower Park is a great place to relax and explore. Come and see for yourself!

Hot tub down River Spree for a fun adventure with friends. Berlin Bootsverleih. It looks super fun, especially from the Zenner Biergarten and Weingarten a cool beer garden located along the river Spree.

Tempelhofer Park

If you’re looking for a unique and fun place to spend your day in Berlin, look no further than Tempelhofer Park! This former airport has been transformed into a huge urban park where you can enjoy nature, culture, and sports. Here are some reasons why you should visit Tempelhofer Park:

– Explore the history of aviation and see the old terminals, hangars, and runways.

– You can join the locals in biking, skating, jogging, or flying kites on the vast open space.

– Relax on the grass, have a picnic or barbecue, or visit the community gardens and urban farms.

– Check out the events and festivals that take place throughout the year, such as concerts, markets, and exhibitions.

Tempelhofer Park is a must-see attraction for anyone who loves adventure, creativity, and diversity. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of the most amazing parks in the world!

Eat Traditional German Food

In Berlin, there are two staples Doner Kebab and Currywurst. Of course, there is more to German cuisine, but the birthplace of the doner kebab is in Berlin. The sandwich as most of us know it today was popularized by Turkish immigrants in the 1970s. Today there are more doner kebab shops in Berlin, than there are in Istanbul.  This is a must for any Berlin city break.

Currywurst is another fast food dish in Germany. The curry wurst is a fried sausage, cut. up, and served with fries and curry sauce on the side.

Don’t forget to spend an afternoon in a beer garden. Don’t worry they have choices too for those not looking to drink.

Watch Sunset at Klunkerkranich

If you are looking for an epic view of the skyline of Berlin and a place to go to watch an epic sunset with vibes, Klunkerkranich is the place. It is located in  Neukölln . There are also many vegan options for food, and there was even a DJ. The location is cool, on top of a parking lot that is attached to a mall! Very Berlin and a must on your Berlin City Break.

Day Trips From Berlin

Potsdam is about a 40-minute train ride from the center of Berlin. Here you can find a quaint Old Town, next to the stunning Sanssouci Palace and gardens. This is the Versailles of Berlin. I have been here for the Christmas Market, which was a magical experience and I can only imagine the experience would be amazing with the full bloom of the palace gardens.

The Perfect Berlin City Break Wrapped

As you can see, Berlin has something for everyone, and it’s a great destination for a city break. You can find cheap flights and hotels online, or book a package deal that includes everything you need. You can also get around easily by using public transport or renting a bike. No matter what you choose to do in Berlin, you will have an unforgettable experience that will make you want to come back again.

Cool tip: Take a selfie at the Photoautomat for a souvenir to take home.

Where to stay in Berlin as a solo traveler?

The Circus Berlin Hostel

If you looking for a cool and cheap place to crash in Berlin? Well, you’re in luck, because I’ve got the perfect spot for you: the Circus Hostel. This hostel is not just a place to sleep, it’s a place to have a blast with other travelers and locals. Let me tell you why you should book your stay at the Circus Hostel.

The Circus Hostel is in the middle of Berlin, near the awesome Rosenthaler Platz. This place is happening, with tons of bars, cafes, and shops to check out. It’s super easy to get around the city from here, because there are many modes of public transport options nearby, like the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus. You can also walk or bike to some of the coolest sights, like Museum Island, where you can see some ancient stuff and art; the Brandenburg Gate, where you can feel the vibe of Berlin; and the Berlin Wall, where you can snap some pics of the colorful graffiti and monuments. The hostel has bikes for hire so you don’t have to worry about returning or picking them up elsewhere.

The rooms

The hostel has all kinds of rooms to fit your style and budget. You can pick from dorms, private rooms, or apartments. All rooms are neat and roomy, and have everything you need, like free Wi-Fi, lockers, and linens. Some rooms also have balconies or private bathrooms. I got lucky with a beautiful view, and apartment, and loved having coffee each morning from my balcony overlooking the Berlin TV Tower and Berlin Cathedral. My apartment/suite was amazing with a wrap-around balcony, full kitchen, fridge, and coffee maker. There was also a seating area with a smart TV. It was by far the best hostel suite I have ever had.

Best Hostel For A Berlin City Break

The hostel also has a 24/7 reception, a laundry room, luggage storage, and a cafe with breakfast all you can eat til 1 pm. This is not your average hostel either. They have a microbrewery in the basement, which makes it easy to meet other travelers.

But what makes the Circus Hostel different from other hostels is its fun and chill vibe. The hostel has tons of events and activities for guests and locals, like pub crawls, walking tours, yoga classes, karaoke nights, and live music. You can also dig into a yummy breakfast buffet at the hostel’s cafe, which has organic and fair-trade stuff; or grab a drink at the rooftop bar, which has an amazing view of the city and a microbrewery that makes its beer.

The Circus Hostel is not just a place to sleep. It’s a place to meet new people, explore new cultures, and have a blast in Berlin for a Berlin city break. If you’re looking for a hostel that has comfort, convenience, and creativity, you’ll love staying at the Circus Hostel. Also, they have a boutique hotel across the street, but I enjoyed my experience at the Circus Hostel as a solo traveler to Berlin. It was a perfect base to set off to explore on my Berlin city break.
