Travelers Guide to New York City

Airports & entry, planning your nyc trip.

  • Traveling in the Time of COVID

Restaurants & Eating Out

Nightlife & entertainment, getting around, accommodations, attractions, what not to do in nyc, get the most out of your trip to nyc.

Whether you only have a day to visit in New York City or you are in town for a whole week, it is important that you know how to get around, where to go and also what not to do in the City. Use this handy travel guide to get the most out of your NYC experience.

If you are flying into New York City, it can get a little confusing as there are 3 airports that service the city. Both John F. Kennedy airport (JFK) and LaGuardia (LGA) are located in Queens.

This puts you right in the heart of NYC when you arrive. However, JFK primarily receives and sends international flights, unless you are flying through Continental Airlines. If you are flying in from another location within the US, you will most likely fly into LGA.

The Newark International Airport (EWR) is a more modern airport and with less crowds, it can be an easier and less stressful way to reach New York City. Newark isn’t very far from NYC. The benefits of flying into EWR may outweigh being a little farther away when you arrive.

A vacation in New York City requires some forethought and planning. First, you need to know how and when you will get there. However, additional planning for the time you are there can make the trip a lot less stressful.

Many restaurants in the city are very small, and very busy. You don’t want to be stuck waiting in line for several hours just to eat dinner. Make your dinner reservations as far in advance as you can.

You may also want to purchase a CityPass or an Explorer Pass. Instead of paying admission to each of the attractions you plan to visit, you can purchase one of these tourist passes that allow you entry into a set amount of attractions out of the 35 that accept the passes.

It not only saves money that can be spent on other parts of your trip, but it makes getting into these attractions a lot easier.

Traveling in the time of Covid

Like many other destinations worldwide, tours and visitor attractions in NYC have adopted special procedures.

Wearing a mask in mandatory in many locations. You will be expected to supply your own mask and wear it when you enter public buildings.

Keep your distance from other visitors who are not in your family group or bubble. You will be expected to keep your distance inside minibuses and other vehicles and when seated in restaurants.

At the time of writing, NYC welcomes visitors but requires pre-travel testing for Covid-19. You can obtain the most up-to-date information directly from the NYC COVID-19 Citywide Information Portal .

New York City has some of the finest dining you can experience in the US. However, dining in these restaurants can be pretty pricy. Plan on enjoying a couple of meals at a luxury restaurant, such as Gabriel Kreuther where you can enjoy French cuisine, or even the Empire Steakhouse. Here, you can enjoy a great steak as well as great drinks.

Cheaper restaurants or even casual dining will help you save some cash. Enjoy authentic NYC pizza at Famous Amadeus Pizzeria, for example. However, if you are on the move and need to grab something quick, there are always street vendors. You may even be surprised at how good the food is. To get the best taste of NYC, we would recommend taking a guided NYC food tour .

The New York City nightlife keeps both locals and tourists busy well into the night. If beer is your thing, you want to check out the Blind Tiger. Specializing in craft beers with 30 taps available, you’re sure to find a beer you love.

The Angel’s Share may not have a glamorous outdoor appearance, but inside, you will find classy and flashy drinks. As a Japanese cocktail bar in East Village, it has a unique feel. Want to visit someplace famous? The 7B has a grunge feel, also located in East Village, and has been featured in several movies, including the Godfather.

However, if you haven’t planned your NYC nightlife before arriving, you won’t have a problem finding a fun, unique place to enjoy a few drinks or even dancing. Famous for fun, the New York City nightlife has a lot to offer.

The subways in New York City may even be an attraction. There’s nothing quite like speeding through underground tunnels on a train. However, the subways are a very easy, quick, and cheap way to travel throughout the city. The local busses also make getting around easy.

You will have to pre-pay for your rides on both the subway system and the bus routes through the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or MTA. You can get single-ride passes or even an unlimited ride pass that lasts for the length of your trip.

You will definitely want to keep your subway and bus route map handy so you can figure out your travel ahead of time. Subways have stops every 8 to 10 blocks, approximately but if you take an express ride, the stops are farther apart. If you plan on visiting Staten Island, you will need to take the free ferry to the island.

If you are looking to stay in the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, you want to find a hotel in midtown. The right hotel will give you beautiful views of Time Square and more. However, these hotels are usually a bit more expensive just because of the location.

If you are looking for a luxury stay, the Mandarin Oriental or the famous Park Hyatt are close to attractions. If you want to save some cash and stay in a more affordable hotel, the Skyline Hotel New York or the Travel Inn, located in midtown, work just as well.

If you are traveling to New York City with your family, or even a group, you may want to look into a vacation rental. Several companies can help you find a residence within the city that is being rented out by the owners. They won’t be there, as you are renting the space. You typically have a lot more room, and conveniences such as a kitchen, when you find a vacation rental. It helps that it can save you money as well.

If you are going to enjoy a New York dinner cruise, you most likely want to visit in Summer or Fall. The average temps in NYC during the winter hover just above freezing and aren’t ideal for visiting most attractions in the City. The best time to visit would be from June to September.

You should look up the projected forecast just before you leave so you know what weather is expected. Be sure to pack clothes accordingly, but you may want to throw in a couple of outfits meant for different weather, just to be safe.

The Big Apple is never short on attractions to keep tourists busy from sun up to sun down. The Empire State Building is one of the most popular attractions as you are able to see the New York skyline from the observation deck. The Statue of Liberty is not to be missed. If you find yourself in Central Park, there are plenty of food vendors and even free activities to enjoy. If you want to take in a show, be sure to hit Broadway, and if music is your thing, there’s always the Radio City Music Hall.

Past tourists to New York City have learned from early mistakes and many locals can tell you how to plan for a trip. Most advise that you shouldn’t get out of the car or off the plane without a plan for your trip. Winging it in the big city means you may miss out on seasonal events or even attractions you want to visit but they are closed or busy.

Stopping by attractions when they are the busiest will also have you wasting a lot of time standing in line. Visiting during off-peak hours will allow you to enjoy those attractions with less crowds, also saving time for other tourist attractions.

You shouldn’t plan to visit only those museums that are the most popular. Others, such as the Frick or the Neue Gallery, can be just as exciting and also feature smaller crowds.

When walking on the sidewalks, be sure to walk with traffic and set aside if you need to slow down or stop. You shouldn’t walk more than 2 people wide and keep to the side of the sidewalk that is moving in the direction you are headed. When stepping off a curb to hail a cab, place yourself past any parked cars and wave and those cabs who have their cab light on, signaling it is available.

A lot of tourists stick close to the hotel and avoid many areas that are busy or large. However, you shouldn’t be afraid of getting lost. The streets are mostly laid out in a grid and it is usually very easy to tell which direction you are going or need to go.

Knowing that New York City is one of the biggest tourist areas around the country, locals are usually very willing to tell you where the closest subway entrance is, if you are headed in the right direction, or even how to get back to your hotel if you’ve lost your way. There’s nothing like a visit to the Big Apple, and while you are in town, be sure to take in the best New York dinner cruise.

La Barca All-Inclusive Mexican Dinner Cruise

La Barca Cantina dinner cruise with lights on boat at night.

Price: From $75 Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.

One criticism of New York dinner cruises is that they don't offer good value for money, but this all-inclusive Mexican dinner cruise package offered through GetYourGuide and Viator challenges that critique with tacos, churros, cocktails and skyline views for an affordable price. Climb aboard a yacht at Pier 81 to experience a youthful, modern interpretation of a dinner cruise – think: low lighting, couches for lounging and three bars, complete with Latin pop, salsa and dance music playing in the background.

With the all-inclusive El Plato Perfecto package, this sightseeing cruise features a hearty dinner with three tacos (with options like skirt steak or dos mushrooms) and a margarita; for dessert, enjoy churros with chocolate dipping sauce. If you would prefer to sample other food and beverage options on board, you can book your cruise through La Barca Cantina's website for an a la carte experience. Raise a glass while the yacht sails south on the Hudson River to check out world-famous Manhattan skyline views.

Local tip: La Barca Cantina also offers a bottomless brunch cruise with a DJ.

Classic Harbor Line NYC Evening Jazz Cruise

Live jazz trio performing for the Classic Harbor Line NYC Evening Jazz Cruise on the Manhattan II yacht in the summer.

Courtesy of Classic Harbor Line

Price: From $94 Duration: 1.5 hours Standout perk: A jazz trio typically featuring a sax, keyboard and drums plays live on board.

Listen to jazz standards aboard a 1920s-style yacht with this fun sightseeing cruise departing from Pier 62 in Chelsea Piers. Choose between kicking back in the climate-controlled cabin or on the open-air deck throughout this evening cruise, which includes views of Manhattan landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Live music is played outside on the deck or inside the salon, depending on the season (and the boat, Manhattan or Manhattan II).

While this cruise doesn't offer dinner, one complimentary alcoholic beverage is included, and a cash bar offers additional drinks and snacks. Listen to music by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and more as you sail past the twinkling Manhattan skyline.

Local tip: Tickets at the slightly discounted rate of $94 are available for groups of 4 to 16; the rate is $108 for one to three guests.

Circle Line New York City Harbor Lights Cruise

Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise at night with New York City buildings in the background.

Courtesy of Circle Line

Price: From $43 Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: This no-fuss, excellent-value cruise option has drinks and snacks available for purchase on board.

When you're craving panoramic views rather than a three-course meal, choose the Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise departing from Pier 83. This sightseeing sailing delivers an up-close experience of the Manhattan skyline lights coming to life, while cruising past landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge, Chrysler Building, One World Trade Center and more. A live guide provides narration and historical context for what you're seeing. As the sun sets behind New Jersey, watch the glow of the sinking sun reflect in the windows of skyscrapers.

Food from the onboard cafe – like salads, sandwiches and snacks – as well as beer, wine and cocktails at the bar are available for purchase. This is an ideal situation for groups with varying levels of hunger and thirst. Sit alfresco in the breeze or indoors in the climate-controlled cabin – it's up to you.

Local tip: Non-English-speaking guests can download the Circle Line app for narration available in several languages; just be sure to bring your own headset.

Best Dinner Cruise NYC has to Offer

1. nyc: luxury brunch, lunch or dinner harbor cruise with city cruises.

A boat cruising through New York Harbor at sunset.

⭐️ Rating: 4.7/5.0 (369 Reviews) Price: $104 per person Duration: 2-3 hours 📍 Meeting Point : Pier 61, Chelsea Piers Operator: City Cruises Details : Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

With different types of harbor cruises departing from ports all across the country, it’s not surprising that this titan of the sightseeing cruise world (i.e. City Cruises) has a contender for the best dinner cruise NYC has to offer .

And while I’m personally a fan of their brunch cruise (since we all know how much I love me a fun brunch in nyc with bottomless mimosas, breakfast pastries, and french toast) the beauty of this cruise option is that they have brunch, lunch, and dinner departures available.

So, regardless of the New York City harbor cruise you’re looking for, they have a fantastic option for you.

Just be aware that you will need to dress in slightly fancier attire if you opt for the dinner cruise since the lunch and brunch cruises are both a bit more casual (i.e. wear a nice dress).

And, added bonus? You’ll get to luxuriate aboard a European-style boat with panoramic glass windows.

Therefore, it is now easier than ever to enjoy some of the best-unobstructed views of NYC as you cruise past the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and One World Trade Center.

Heck, you’ll even get to enjoy the musical stylings of a live jazz pianist while you feast on an incredible 3-course meal – prepared by a world-class chef – from the comfort of your very own private table.

Seriously, what’s not to love about this cruise ? In fact, one patron said:

“One of the best times of my life!!! I did it for the birthday of my wife, and I thought I messed up because of the fog, but boy was I wrong!!! Beef tasted like butter, the ride was too smooth, and we’ll never forget this day!!! Thank you to Nichy, he was the server that helped accentuate the ambiance, as well as the band and their beautiful music!!!” Ryan ( click here to read more reviews )

So, what are you waiting for? Book your cruise now and find out what all the fuss is about!

Pro Tip: Boarding begins 30 minutes before departure and the menu is subject to change. You’ll also want to make one reservation per group if you want to sit together. Not gonna lie, I’m also a huge fan of the bottomless mimosas and their brunch cruise .

2. Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise

View of fireworks exploding above the Manhattan skyline during one of the best dinner cruises in NYC.

⭐️ Rating : 4.5/5.0 (916 Reviews) Price: $229 per person Duration: 3 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Chelsea Piers Operator: City Cruises Details: Read more on Viator Now!

Looking for a swank AF experience that is easily the best dinner cruise NYC has?

If so then look no further than this Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise . Yes, this option is a bit pricey at $229.00 per person.

But, you know what they say? You get what you pay for.

And with this premium dinner cruise aboard the Bateaux New York, you’ll enjoy a decadent 3-course meal, live music, and unparalleled views of the Big Apple.

Yeah, the views are pretty sick since the boat is all glass and you are on the water. As a result, there is nothing really in the way to obstruct your view.

So, after boarding the vessel at 6:15 pm at Chelsea Piers, sail past the Statue of Liberty, the Seaport District, Governors Island, and the Manhattan skyline.

Next, do a bit of dancing to some live jazz music (from an actual pianist) with a few of your fave besties before digging into a decadent meal and returning to Chelsea Piers at 10:00 pm.

Yup, you’ll make memories to last a lifetime since past patrons are saying that:

“The maitre d made our experience magical!! Our server was amazing as well!! The best part of our trip!” Samantha ( click here to read more reviews )

Pro Tip: This is a fancy NYC dinner cruise so kids are not allowed. You are also expected to dress up in semi-formal attire, so don’t roll up in a ratty pair of sweatpants. #justsayin’

3. New York City: Brunch, Lunch, or Dinner Buffet River Cruise with City Cruises

Fancy Dinner

⭐️ Rating: 4.4/5.0 (281 Reviews) Price : $104 per person Duration: 2-3 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Pier 61, Chelsea Piers Operator: City Cruises Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Another top pick for the best dinner cruise in NYC, this buffet river cruise is also operated by City Cruises.

So, it’ll be very similar to my top pick. It just feels a bit more casual since this cruise offers a buffet dining experience instead of a formal sit-down meal.

See, this cruise features a lavish lunch, brunch, or dinner buffet that you can happily enjoy from the comfort of the Spirit of New York.

And as your cruise along the Hudson and East Rivers. you’ll take in sweeping views of the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge , the Statue of Liberty, and more.

You’ll also sip on unlimited coffee/tea/iced tea as you listen to the musical stylings of your onboard DJ.

In fact, this cruise is so rad that customers are saying:

“We appreciate the customer service. The sightseeing, the food, and the music was great. I would recommend the lunch buffet cruise on the Spirit of New York for any visitor to New York.” Ralph ( check out more reviews now )

4. New York Lunch Cruise

⭐️ Rating: 4.5/5.0 (99 Reviews) Price: $104 per person Duration: 2 hours 📍 Meeting Point : Pier 61, Chelsea Piers Operator: City Cruises Details: Read more on Viator Now!

Operated by the rockstars over at City Cruises, this is the best dinner cruise NYC has to offer that departs daily at 12:00 pm.

So, if you’re open to embarking on a lunch cruise in NYC through the East and Hudson Rivers then this experience is ideal.

Not only will you get access to a spacious sun deck where you can enjoy impressive views, but you’ll dig into a sumptuous lunch buffet that is filled with freshly made desserts, entrees, and salads.

And if you really want to live la vida loca you can opt for an optional open bar upgrade as you dance the day away to live music from a local DJ.

After all, the upgrade is pretty rad and includes a welcome glass of champagne in a souvenir mug as well as a VIP private table for your group, and access to an open bar.

Just don’t forget to stop and enjoy some up-close views of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, and the Empire State Building along the way.

Other highlights include a climate-controlled interior, unlimited soft drinks, access to a rooftop lounge, and fun bar games too.

In fact, past guests are saying that:

“Took this cruise in December to celebrate my father’s birthday and it was a quality experience. Lots of entertainment onboard between the games, dancing and the guided tour. Staff were very kind and helpful. Food was tasty. Trip was exactly as described. No complaints.” Alexis ( read more reviews now )

NYC Dinner Cruise

Which cruise is best for you.

best dinner cruise nyc

This post will provide information about some of the best dinner cruises available in NYC.

We include which one excels in each category and how they are different from each other.

Although we are local tour guides who mostly lead walking tours, some of us have also led tours on the city's boats.

Should I take a dinner cruise? Which company and cruise is best?

These are two questions that we locals get asked all of the time, and the following tips come from our own experiences.

And we also got inspiration from the contributions of the roughly 200k members of our popular NYC Travel Tips Facebook group.

best dinner cruise nyc

Our group consists of locals, like our guides, veteran visitors to NYC, as well as newbies.

There's no need to become a member to read the posts, comments, and recommendations.

So, check us out once you finish reading this post. A link can be found at the end of this article.

  • Lowest Price
  • Best Dinner
  • Most Romantic
  • Best Specialty Cruises

The following cruises are chosen based on how well they fit the criteria specified in each section.

For example, if you are looking for a cruise that has live music or a DJ, our Best Music Cruise section highlights one of the best services in the entire city.

Manhattan Dinner Cruises

Many of the selections we have listed below are great in multiple categories.

For example, our pick for the Best Dinner Cruise is also an excellent choice for the Most Romantic Cruise .

This post covers five of the most important factors visitors consider when choosing a cruise: the lowest price, the best dinner, the best music, the most romantic, and the best specialty cruise.

Our section on Specialty Cruises  includes four different options for specific holidays such as Independence Day, New Year’s Eve, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day – which means our list covers a total of 8 cruises!

Additionally, we will also make note of the differences between that service and others found in this post.

No matter what cruise you choose, all offer views of the NYC skyline and landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.

There are plenty of great cruises you can take in New York City, but some are better than others when it comes to specific criteria.

If you’re looking for even more services, make sure to read our post about NYC cruises .

CHEAPEST CRUISE

When we say cheap, we mean inexpensive. And just because the cruise is affordable doesn’t mean the quality of your experience will suffer.

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced excursion, consider this option to save some money.

Hornblower Cruises | Alive After Five

This cruise company is well known and respected for providing excellent excursions in New York City, and this is one of their more popular services.

Although Alive After Five is not technically a sit-down dinner cruise, you can purchase a ticket that includes a delicious buffet dinner with dishes ranging from pasta to Tex-Mex.

If you don’t feel like paying for a meal, you can also purchase snacks and drinks at your leisure.

The cruise boat has two climate-controlled decks and a covered roof deck, and multiple dance floors. You'll have plenty of room to dance to tunes spun by the on-board DJ.

The Alive After Five cruise is included for free with the purchase of the New York Sightseeing Pass , making it even more affordable.

Even after adding on a few snacks/drinks or a buffet, it’s still one of the lowest-priced cruises in the city!

  • Hours: 6 pm - 8 pm (2-hour duration)
  • Purchase tickets or learn more .

Differences to Note

Being the cheapest option on our list, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that this is also the shortest dinner cruise in New York City.

It should also be noted that this is essentially a happy hour service, typically described as a cocktail cruise, so it’s not the most family-friendly option.

As it might be better suited to singles, this won't be the most romantic dinner cruise out there.

This cruise is more about having some fun out on the water and seeing the sights while you enjoy a few drinks/snacks and great music.

Additional Options

If you’re looking for an official dinner cruise, you may want to consider Spirit Cruises instead.

Some of their excursions can be less than $150 per person, and they typically include a buffet-style dinner.

While this service is more expensive than Hornblower’s Alive After Five cruise, it’s also a lot less casual and aimed more at customers who are looking for a romantic night out.

As if that weren’t enough, you can also save $10 off your ticket by using a New York tourist pass . Check our deals section for more details on this opportunity.

You can also find more information about this company and its services in our post covering NYC cruises .

BEST DINNER CRUISE

If you’re looking for a truly memorable meal while cruising around New York City, there are several great options to consider.

That said, this section will include our favorite service based heavily on the highest-rated dishes.

Bateaux New York | New York Dinner Cruise

When it comes to food quality, this is arguably one of the best-rated dinner cruises in NYC.

You'll have a 3-course plated dinner with freshly prepared entrees, salads and desserts. You also get unlimited coffee, hot tea, iced tea and water.

Some examples of entrees include Braised Beef Short Ribs with Fresno Pepper Demi Glace, Oven-Roasted Chicken Breast with Rosemary & Thyme, Pan Seared Atlantic Cod, and more!

Bateaux Cruises NYC

In addition to the meal, you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy a live acoustic quartet with a vocalist and live pianist.

You'll enjoy your evening from inside a glass-enclosed deck as you travel up the Hudson River.

If you have the New York Sightseeing Pass , you can use it to save an extra 10% off this cruise ($20+ off).

  • $229 and up
  • Availability: Thursday - Sunday
  • Hours: 7 pm - 10 pm (3-hour duration)

Needless to say, since the meal is a lot better, this is also one of the most expensive dinner cruises available.

That said, if the food quality is of importance, then according to online reviews, you won’t find a better option.

This is also a longer cruise than some of the other services in New York City, and it’s clearly intended for guests who are looking for either a romantic night out with less of a party atmosphere.

If you are not interested in Bateaux’s service or you just want an alternative in case tickets sell out, we recommend considering Hornblower Cruises for an excellent meal during your excursion.

Much like their competitors, this company also provides 3-course meals for their cruises, and most guests are very impressed with their dinner.

While Hornblower isn’t as popular as Bateaux Cruises, their food is usually very highly rated, so it’s a great alternative to other options.

For more information on this and other services, please read our post covering the best NYC cruises and boat tours .

BEST MUSIC CRUISE

Some dinner cruises provide a DJ who plays a variety of popular music, while others offer live entertainment from an acoustic quartet.

If you’re interested in hearing some great tunes while cruising around New York City Harbor, this section will cover one of the best services available.

Keep in mind that our choice for Best Dinner Cruise and Most Romantic Cruise  also receive high ratings for providing live music for guests to enjoy.

Classic Harbor Line | Evening Jazz Cruise

This is another example of a service that isn’t technically a dinner cruise, but you can enjoy some snacks and drinks while on this excursion.

The main reason to consider taking this cruise is the live jazz performance included during your trip around New York Harbor.

The professional band on board will play classics from Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and even Motown songs!

Jazz Cruise NYC

Another great reason to consider this cruise is the fact that it takes place on a traditional 1920s-style yacht, complete with authentic wood grain and plenty of windows for beautiful views.

If you’re really hungry, you can also order an artisanal cheese plate or a Mediterranean plate to enjoy while taking the cruise.

Each outing includes a complimentary beer, wine, or champagne from the bar.

  • $104 per person
  • Availability: Fri & Sun
  • Hours: 8 pm - 10 pm (2-hour duration)

Aside from the fact that this cruise doesn’t include a traditional dinner or buffet, this is also a slightly shorter outing than some of the other options on our list.

That said, while other evening cruises are on more modern ships, this one takes place on a traditional yacht that is now almost a century old, ensuring a unique experience you won’t soon forget.

While other boats or cruise ships are designed with modern architecture in mind, this yacht still uses the same beautiful wooden slats it had when it was first built. The live jazz is also an excellent bonus that you won’t get on most traditional dinner cruises in New York City.

When it comes to music, most dinner cruises only have DJs who provide a selection of popular and often romantic tunes.

If you want a live performance, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Thankfully, there are a few different services you might want to consider if you’re specifically looking for a cruise with live music.

One option is already listed below under our pick for the most romantic NYC dinner cruise!

Bateaux Cruises offers a romantic dinner cruise that includes live musicians performing relaxing music.

Alternatively, you may also want to consider Hornblower Cruises as well.

Hornblower’s basic dinner cruise also includes an acoustic quartet playing beautiful and romantic music for all passengers.

Better yet, you may be able to save some money on these cruises by using a New York tourist pass , and we’ll cover this in greater detail under our deals section .

MOST ROMANTIC CRUISE

Taking your loved one on an evening cruise can be quite a sentimental experience.

If you’re looking for an outing that will set the mood properly, this section will provide what we believe to be a most romantic New York City dinner cruise.

Manhattan By Sail | Wine Tasting Sail

This company is well known for providing sailing experiences on their classic schooner the Shearwater.

While they offer a variety of different services each week, this is perhaps the most romantic option.

On this wine-tasting sail, you'll step aboard a beautiful 82-foot 1929 schooner and enjoy the sights of New York City from the water as you enjoy a wine-tasting event.

In addition to trying a variety of different wines, you'll also enjoy several snacks and cheeses to cleanse your palate.

This excursion is offered on weekends at either 2:30 pm or 5 pm and lasts for approximately 2 hours.

If you choose the 5 pm time slot, you might even get the chance to see an incredible sunset!

  • $100 per person
  • Availability: Sat and Sun
  • Hours: 2:30 pm, 5 PM

Since this service is all about tasting wine, it probably won’t be a great option for families or anyone looking for more of a party boat atmosphere.

This is also a sailing excursion, which means you won't have to worry as much about the sounds of a boat engine impacting your experience.

When it comes to romance, there are a few different cruise services that offer a rather excellent alternative to Manhattan By Sail.

One of the best options is actually Hornblower, as they offer a very similar service which also includes an acoustic quartet playing romantic music for their passengers.

Spirit Cruises is another excellent option, as they provide window table reservations which allow you to ensure you’ll have one of the best views on the ship, setting the mood for a nice, romantic night on the water.

Both of these services are 10% off with the New York Sightseeing Pass , and you can learn more about that service in our deals section .

BEST SPECIALTY CRUISE

If you’re visiting New York City during a holiday, there might be a cruise offered that allows you to celebrate the event out on the water.

This section provides details about our favorite specialty cruises.

Most cruise companies offer specialty excursions for certain holidays, so it’s difficult to pick just a one-holiday service you may want to consider.

Rather than providing one specialty cruise you absolutely have to take, we’re going to include a list of dinner cruises available during each major holiday in New York City.

  • See the fireworks from a cruise boat.
  • Includes live DJ and dancing.
  • $169 and up
  • Includes dance music and a full open bar.
  • $299 and up
  • Complimentary hot cocoa and cookies included.
  • Live jazz performances and Christmas carol sing-alongs.
  • $124 and up
  • Includes buffet dinner and free Champagne toast.
  • Music will also be provided for dancing.
  • $199 and up

Due to the fact that these cruises focus on specific holidays and certain times of the year, their availability is typically limited to either the night of the event or the weeks leading up to that date.

Ticket prices for specialty cruises are also typically a bit more expensive, so you might want to consider another alternative if the price is too high.

Many of the services we’ve listed in this post are also available either on these holidays or during the general time frame.

So, if you’re not dead set on a focused specialty cruise, chances are you’ll enjoy another option just as much.

OFFERS, DEALS + PROMOS

Most dinner cruises won’t offer many deals of note, but some of the services we have listed in this post actually do provide a few offers through various different methods.

In this section, we’ll cover the best ways to save money on dinner cruises in New York City, including tourist attraction concession passes and promo sites.

Tourist Attraction Concession Passes

If you’re planning to visit multiple attractions or take multiple tours in addition to paying for a dinner cruise, you might want to consider purchasing a tourist pass to save some money.

Depending on which service you choose, you could save a few bucks on your dinner cruise in addition to all the extra activities you may have planned.

The following concessions are currently available:

  • Also includes Hornblower Alive After Five Cruise.
  • Big Apple Pass | 10% off Spirit Dinner Cruises.

In addition to saving money on dinner cruises, you can also get free or lowered price admission to the following attractions and activities:

  • Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
  • Hop on Hop off Bus Tours
  • Manhattan by Sail Cruise
  • One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower)
  • Edge Observation Deck
  • Empire State Building
  • Food on Foot Tours
  • Madame Tussauds
  • Central Park Zoo
  • Top of the Rock
  • NY Aquarium

If you use these passes for at least 4-5 services per day, you should be able to save anywhere from 20% - 50% off general admission prices.

For more details, please read our post covering New York tourist passes .

Promo Sites

If all else fails, you may want to check sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial for any deals they might be offering on New York City dinner cruises.

Every now and then, these websites will provide a decent price cut on NYC cruises, and they also frequently offer extra promo codes you can use to save an additional 10% - 20% off local activities.

Before you make any purchase, make sure to check the top and bottom of the page for banners that may contain promos you can use to save more money on your cruise of choice!

Classic Harbor Line: Champagne City Lights Cruise

Champagne City Lights Cruise NYC

We had an amazing time onboard the luxurious 1920s inspired motor yacht. Combine sightseeing with a romantic evening and step onboard the 1920s inspired boat at Pier 62 (Chelsea Piers – W. 22nd and Hudson River). During the 90-minutes long tour, you’ll get to see iconic NYC sights along the water and most importantly breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Especially in the summer, you can admire the most beautiful sunset during this special cruise. There is seating inside the yacht and outside seating as well.

Live Jazz City Lights Sail

Live Jazz City Lights Sail

This 90-minute live jazz sail is one of the best NYC sails I’ve ever done. You’ll sail from Chelsea Piers to New York Harbor, always with the beautiful skyline and Statue of Liberty in view. What you can expect on the Live Jazz City Lights Sail and why you should definitely do it, I’ll tell you in my report!

Sunset Sail Aboard a Schooner

Sunset_Sail_Aboard_a_Schooner

This sailing tour is so beautiful – I’ve done it myself! Aboard the Schooner America 2.0 you sail towards the Statue of Liberty and experience one of the most romantic sunsets in New York. The atmosphere on board is really great and relaxed, while you can admire the Manhattan skyline the whole time. Even a drink is included! Be sure to check it out!

Skyline Brunch Cruise Around Manhattan

Skyline Brunch Cruise Around Manhattan

This brunch cruise is one of the most beautiful boat tours in New York. You sit aboard a 1920s-style ship with lots of wood and even more glass. The provider has several wonderful boat tours in the program, of which we have already tried four (and all were great!).

Start at Pier 62 at Chelsea Piers – this is where you board. First you start towards the George Washington Bridge, then turn south to the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the Brooklyn Bridge . You can enjoy the view of the New York skyline and have a delicious brunch with New York specialties. The first drink (even champagne!) is even included in the price.

Circle Line - Harbor Lights Night Cruise

Circle Line - Harbor Lights Night Cruise

The Harbor Lights Cruise by Cricle Line is an amazing way to see the NYC from the water. As the lights start to sparkle across the Hudson and East Rivers at dusk you see the beauty of the city at night from a whole different angle.

Classic Harbor Line: Architecture Yacht Cruise

Architektur_Tour_Boot_Manhattan_2_New_York_180611163459001

The architecture boat tour takes you around Manhattan in 2.5 hours. On a 30 meter long wooden ship in the style of the 1920s you can relax and learn a lot of interesting facts about the many small and large buildings of the city. The tour is super-relaxing and the price includes a drink (vino, soft drinks) and small snacks.

Sunset Boat Cruise to Statue of Liberty

Bootsfahrt_zur_Freiheitsstatue_zum_Sonnenuntergang

This sunset boat ride to the Statue of Liberty departs from Pier 36 on the East River. From here you will sail along the East River towards the southern tip of Manhattan, passing under the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge.

Then you continue to the Statue of Liberty and a little bit up the Hudson River, so that you can see the skyline of New York from both sides of Manhattan.

Bateaux Lunch Cruise

New York Premier Lunch Cruise

This boat tour with lunch on board the Bateaux New York will take you from the Hudson River to the East River, which means you will see all the major buildings of the NYC skyline. And of course, the Statue of Liberty is included! Since the atmosphere on the Bateaux Lunch cruise is a bit more formal, guests are asked to wear long pants and no shorts or hot pants or flip flops.

Circle Line - New York Landmarks Cruise

Circle Line - New York Landmarks Cruise

This Circle Line cruise will take you past NYC’s most famous attractions and landmarks. You will head past the Statue of Liberty, the One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, amd much much more. If you are looking to explore Manhattan from the water and learn some of the history of NYC at the same time, this is definitely the cruise for you. At a lenght of approximately 1.5 hours, this cruise will take you half way around the Island of Manhattan as well as once around the Statue of Liberty for the ultimate photo opportunity.

Classic Harbor Line: Evening Jazz Cruise on the Yacht Manhattan

Classic_Harbor_Line_Jazz_Cruise_230421131541001

From one of our absolute favorite boat tours in New York there is also a Jazz Cruise. You are on board a luxury yacht in the style of the 1920s, which has a wonderful charm and is not to be compared with the big sightseeing ships. The jazz cruise starts at the Chelsea Piers and takes you along the Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty and the harbor of New York. On the way you can enjoy a wonderful view of the New York skyline and smooth jazz at the same time.

And the best part? The first drink is included in the price of the Jazz Cruise!

From there, you will make a leisurely drive to the southern tip of Manhattan and you will be in the Port of New York where you can see the Statue of Liberty for the first time. On the way there you can also clearly see the new highest building in the evening skyline: the One World Trade Center.

One of New York’s most popular tourist attractions is the Staten Island Ferry, which commutes between the southern tip of Manhattan and Staten Island. The crossing is free of charge! Are you looking for the best dinner cruise in NYC?

Sailing through the heart of New York City as the skyline transitions from the golden hues of sunset to the vibrant twilight glow is such a magical experience.

Even as someone who has lived in this great city my whole life every summer, I find myself drawn to the unique and tranquil experience of dinner cruises around NYC.

There is something about sailing along down the East River into the New York Harbor that I cannot get enough of.

A woman gazes toward the NYC skyline from the deck of a boat on the Hudson River with stormy clouds overhead.

Looking for the best dinner cruise in NYC?

Our absolute favorite dinner cruise is the Bateaux Dinner Cruise. This all glass boat means it is great for any season and the 3 course dinner offers is one of the best you will find on the water.

Best NYC Dinner Cruises

What is is about a dinner cruise in NYC that just feels special and luxurious? For me its not an everyday experience. It feels like a bit of a treat.  And lucky for us there are not shortage of options.

Some offer full plates meals, while others off buffet style dining. There are even a few that offer drinks and apps which are my personal favorite.

City Cruises on the Spirit of New York

Night view from the best dinner cruise nyc with the Brooklyn Bridge and illuminated NYC skyline reflecting on the East River.

City Cruises offers several dinner cruise experiences. However, a dinner cruise onboard the Spirit of New York is a fan favorite because it is perfect for couples looking for a romantic evening, friends wanting a fun night out, or even families seeking a unique dining experience against New York City's stunning skyline.

Your three-hour cruise includes a buffet filled with yummy dishes, live entertainment to keep you dancing the night away, and the choice to enjoy the climate-controlled cabin indoors or the refreshing open-air deck across its four spacious decks.

As a local tip, bring a light jacket, as it can get breezy on the open deck. Even in the summer. Also, head to the top deck to grab some fantastic shots of the views of the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge. We like to do this just as everyone is lining up for dinner to avoid the crowds.

Location:  Pier 61 Chelsea Piers, 111C 11th Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA

Duration:  2.5-3 hours

Yacht Events: Dinner & Dancing Under The Stars

The New York City skyline at night seen from a wooden dock with the quote 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free' etched on the railing.

If you love to dance like I do, you can enjoy dinner under the stars every Friday and Saturday Night with the Yacht Events Dinner and Dancing Under the Stars dinner cruise.

This dinner cruise is great for couples and girls' night out. The yacht sets sail around the iconic Manhattan skyline, offering amazing views of the Empire State Building and the Freedom Tower.

From the moment you step aboard, you're greeted with a welcome cocktail, setting the tone for an evening filled with elegance and excitement.

The dinner is a gourmet affair, with multi-course offerings that combine international cuisine and local favorites. Post dinner, the deck transforms into a vibrant dance floor with a live DJ spinning the latest hits mixed with timeless classics.

An insider tip . Request a table near the windows during booking for an unobstructed skyline view. Additionally, don't hesitate to communicate any special occasions to the crew; they're known for personalizing the experience to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, or any meaningful event.

Location:  Pier 15, 78 South Street

What is included:  Entry onto the yacht, buffet dinner, and live DJ entertainment. Some packages include a welcome drink or glass of champagne.

Event Cruises NYC: New York Dinner Cruise

The event cruises boat moored at night with lights on, ready for an evening event, against a city backdrop.

I have been on my share of cruises with Event Cruises, including their brunch cruise, and I have to say they don't disappoint.

This 3-hour dinner cruise along the East and Hudson Rivers offers breathtaking panoramic views of New York City, Jersey City, and Brooklyn.

As you step aboard, you're greeted by the inviting atmosphere where you will find several decks, including the exclusive Sky Deck, where you can soak in the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps.

One of the highlights of this cruise is the charismatic host who narrates the journey, pointing out iconic landmarks as you glide by.

After a buffet dinner featuring culinary delights like Caesar Salad, Braised Short Ribs, Mashed Potatoes, and a dessert bar, you can hit the dance floor and groove to the beats of the onboard DJ.

For those seeking a more intimate experience upgrade to the the Window Seating Admission which guarantees you a table with a prime view of the city lights reflecting on the water.

With a great DJ, attentive staff, and a playlist of good music, this dinner cruise is a perfect choice for anyone looking to unwind, enjoy a scenic voyage, and create unforgettable memories on the waters of New York City.

What makes it special:  The fun atmosphere, delicious food, and stunning views make this dinner cruise a must-try for anyone looking to experience the best of New York City's nightlife.

Local Tip:  The pier can be a bit hard to find. When you arrive at the park, follow the signs and walk around the building to get to the dock.

Alive After Five NYC Cruises

A luxury yacht sails in the foreground with the brightly lit New York City skyline in the background during the blue hour.

Who doesn't love happy hour drinks in NYC ? Skip the rooftop and set sail instead. The Alive After Five cruise is your ticket to unwind after a long day, offering a perfect blend of sightseeing and relaxation.

This two-hour cruise takes you on a scenic route around Manhattan, allowing you to drink in the iconic city skyline while enjoying the cool breeze off the Hudson and East River.

While it is more of a cocktail cruise than a dinner cruise, it is definitely one of my favorite evening cruises, especially after a long day at the office or sightseeing.

What sets this cruise apart is its casual, happy-hour vibe, making it ideal for those looking to kick back with friends or colleagues.

Aboard, you'll find a well-stocked bar offering a selection of cocktails, wines, and craft beers, perfect for toasting the stunning vistas of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge. You can even upgrade your ticket to include an open bar.

The atmosphere is lively and engaging thanks to a DJ spinning an eclectic mix of tracks that cater to all tastes.

Location:  New York Pier 15, 78 South St

Duration:  Approximately 2 hours

What is included:  Entry onto the boat with a live DJ playing throughout the evening.

What's extra:  You can upgrade your ticket to include food and drinks, including the option for an open bar.

What makes it special:  The cruise's relaxed atmosphere, stunning views, and good music offer a unique way to experience New York City's beauty and energy without the crowds and hustle of typical tourist spots.

Local Tip:  Arriving early gets you the best spot on the deck for photo opportunities and ensures a smoother boarding process, letting you maximize your time enjoying the views and ambiance.

Bateaux New York Gourmet Dinner Cruises

Close-up of the 'Bateaux New York' sign in rusted metal letters at the dock, indicating luxury dining cruises.

For an exquisite night out on the water, the Bateaux Dinner Cruise offers an experience that combines fine dining with panoramic views of New York's skyline.

Aboard this glass-encased luxury vessel, you will be treated to a sophisticated atmosphere that includes live music and a menu of fresh gourmet dishes.

What makes it special:  The Bateaux's all-glass design and upscale ambiance provide a unique and memorable dining experience, making it an ideal choice for celebrating special occasions or enjoying a romantic evening out.

Local Tip:  For an even more memorable experience, opt for a sunset departure time to enjoy the stunning transition of New York's skyline from day to night.

Circle Line New York City-Harbor Lights Cruise

A vivid night scene of Lower Manhattan with bright city lights reflected in the water, and a ferry gliding along the Hudson River.

New York City is magical at night, and this two-hour cruise is a great way to see the city lights from a different perspective. This is not your traditional dinner cruise, as they do not offer a full plated dinner or buffet. However, they do have food for purchase, and they also have a full bar.

As you cruise down the Hudson River, famous sights like the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, and the Brooklyn Bridge glow against the dark sky. The cruise is narrated along the way, providing the history and stories of the different landmarks you pass.

Location:  83 North River Piers West 43rd Street and 12th Ave

What is included:  Sunset and evening cruise around Manhattan, with narration from knowledgeable guides who share stories and facts about New York's famous landmarks.

What is extra:  Snacks, drinks, and souvenirs are available for purchase on board to enhance your cruising experience.

What makes it special:  The stunning views of the city's skyline at night offer a serene yet spectacular sight.

Local Tip:  Be sure to dress warmly, as it can get quite chilly on the water after sunset, and arrive early to secure the best viewing spots on the deck. While they have indoor seating, the best views are from the outdoor areas.

La Barca All-Inclusive Mexican Dinner Cruise

Sunset view from the water showing the Statue of Liberty silhouette and a Staten Island Ferry against the vibrant evening sky.

If you are looking for a more festive party atmosphere, climb aboard the vibrant La Barca All-Inclusive Mexican Dinner Cruise for an unforgettable evening that combines authentic Mexican cuisine with panoramic views of New York City's skyline.

This two-hour cruise sails around Manhattan, offering guests a great experience with the flavors and sounds of Mexico. It includes three tacos, a margarita, and churros for dessert.

It's a sensory feast—with the city lights twinkling on the water and the soft saxophone playing in the background, you'll feel like you've been transported to another era.

A good insider tip from a local:  Try to book a cruise on a clear night to fully enjoy the moonlit views of the city. The deck offers the best experience, so bring a light jacket, as it can get a bit breezy. Arrive early to get a good spot to comfortably enjoy the music and the views.

This unique experience combines the romance of sailing with the breathtaking backdrop of NYC's skyline. Aboard their fleet of historic sailboats, guests are invited to step back and experience the city from a fresh, exhilarating perspective.

The Hottest New Restaurants in New York City This Spring

By Elise Taylor and Jessie Heyman

Trying new restaurants in New York City is part of the fun of being there: in 2023, there were 71 Michelin-starred eateries across the five boroughs, more than any other city in the United States. Each year, several more are nominated for (and often win) a James Beard award—a.k.a “the foodie Oscars.” And those are just the places with significant accolades: on any given day, on any given corner, you’ll see a thriving restaurant packed with its neighborhood regulars. For Gothamites, after all, going out to eat is a social activity, a hobby, and an adventure.

Over the past few months, the city has welcomed a number of notable new restaurants well worth the reservation. Below, find the hottest New York City restaurants this spring.

San Sabino (West Village)

The husband and wife culinary team of Angie Rito and Scott Tacinelli describe San Sabino as “Italian American”—and indeed, their menu includes melting-pot meals like shrimp parmesan, shrimp Louie salad, lobster ravioli, as well as crab and mortadella dip. “We’re just trying to have fun and kind of put a new spin on things,” Rito previously told Vogue. Yet don’t let their delightful unpretentious fool you: their other restaurant, Don Angie, earned a Michelin star in 2021 and remains one of the most sought-after reservations in New York. San Sabino is fun, but also a tastebud tour-de-force deserving of critical acclaim. –Elise Taylor, senior living writer

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Cecily was just another well-lit small-plates spot. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that; it’s a New York mainstay for a reason.) But Cecily—the newest venture from the team behind other Brooklyn beloved haunts like The Four Horsemen and Estella—is perhaps the platonic ideal of a modern neighborhood restaurant. The menu, just a dozen dishes long, is deceptively simple: chicory salad, butter beans, winter panzanella, roast chicken. Every dish, every ingredient, is so understandable; no fussy gastronomy here—just some of the best (and most bountiful) plates of food I’ve had in recent memory. Everything is excellent, but the mussel toast—a happy hybrid of moules-frites and a po’ boy—is worth a trip to Greenpoint alone. –Jessie Heyman, executive editor

Demo (West Village)

Calling Demo a wine bar feels diminutive—although with only forty seats and a great selection of bottles, it very much is. (“Nice night for a Cabernet Franc,” reads a recent Instagram caption.) Yet the pared-back menu is also perfection. Foccacia and olive oil come with anchovies, whereas a crab casino is crusted with Ritz crackers. For heartier fare, opt for a juicy half chicken or lobster au poivre. Just make sure to leave room for the banana pudding. –E.T.

Beef Bar (TriBeCa)

Image may contain Indoors Lamp Architecture Building Dining Room Dining Table Furniture Room Table Plate and Cup

With locations in St. Tropez, Monte Carlo, Mykonos, and Dubai, Beef Bar is a restaurant that caters to a see-and-be-seen clientele—who also happens to enjoy a fine cut of meat. This spring, they put up their velvet rope in front of a 6,000-foot space in Downtown New York. Inside, a dining room with Verde Alpi marble tables awaits, lined with dining chairs upholstered in Pierre Frey fabrics. A lounge, meanwhile, embraces an Art Deco-like interior and includes a DJ booth. As the name implies, steak is the thing to order. But also don’t skip on the street food section of the menu, which features a number of creative yet more casual dishes: think Wagyu beef quesadillas, bao buns, and bite-sized croque monsieurs with ham and mozzarella cheese. –E.T.

Coqodaq (Flatiron)

Image may contain Cup Indoors Architecture Building Furniture Lounge and Interior Design

I haven’t exactly checked in with any analytics agency, but Coqodaq has to be the most Instagrammed New York City restaurant as of late. (Their caviar-covered chicken nuggets are particularly the subject of social media snaps.) Viral food aside, the Simon Kim-run restaurant (of Cote fame) has captured the cultural culinary zeitgeist due to its creative take on Korean fried chicken: patrons order buckets of crispy poultry coated in soy sauce garlic or gochujang glaze, along with traditional American sides like mac and cheese or coleslaw. The result? An evening of cultural crossed, elevated comfort food. The interiors are also impressive: the David Rockwell-designed restaurant boasts grand illuminated arches, green velvet banquettes, and the most beautiful hand-washing station you’ve ever seen. —E.T.

Theodora (Fort Greene)

Image may contain Indoors Restaurant Architecture Building Dining Room Dining Table Furniture Room Table and Cafe

My neighborhood of Fort Greene, Brooklyn, has seen a fleet of buzzy openings in the past few years—the Milanese-inspired Saraghina, the impossibly popular Sailor—and now, to tucked-away 7 Greene Avenue, comes Theodora, which already has the area swooning. There’s a good reason for the fuss: the restaurant is from chef Tomer Blechman of Miss Ada (another local hotspot) and delivers a dynamic, seafood-forward Mediterranean menu. Hype can be a dangerous thing (how can a little radish possibly live up to all that pressure?), but I can happily say that in Theodora’s case, it’s entirely deserved. The restaurant is immediately transporting (the decor is Mexico City meets Tel Aviv) and the food feels just as special. You’ll be tempted to pull out your phone—especially to capture the za’atar kubaneh, a cinnamon bun-style savory pastry served with three dips—but mostly you’ll be too busy eating. The whole menu is a knock-out, just make sure you save room for dessert: a deconstructed baklava sundae with tahini ice cream. –J.H.
