Climate and Weather in Cappadocia

Cappadocia has a continental climate, which means it has distinctive hot summers, cold winters, and mild autumns and springs.

Most of Cappadocia is at over 1,000 meters in elevation, with the highest peak at 3916 meters. This means that the temperatures change more dramatically.

As you might expect from a desert environment, there is a significant temperature difference between day and night. Once the sun sets, it is almost like Cappadocia goes into a new season.

Visitors must pack accordingly when visiting Cappadocia. It isn’t enough to only pack a t-shirt and shorts for the summer because the evenings will get cold. This is especially true if you plan on doing the hot air balloon ride, which occurs in the cold early mornings and you are really high off the ground.

Cappadocia in Summer (June to August)

The summer months are the peak season in Cappadocia. Visitors from all around the world go to Cappadocia to enjoy some of its best attractions.

Though super busy, summer is not exactly the ideal time to visit Cappadocia. The desert environment of Cappadocia provides little shade. And with the clear skies, high temperatures, and very little wind, tourists are at a high risk of sun-related illnesses.

Visitors must make sure they are hydrated at all times.

These months see the least precipitation throughout the year. Combined with low sustained winds, summer is a great time for flying in a hot air balloon in Cappadocia .

The nights are quite cold though, so many sure you pack a small jacket with you.

Cappadocia in Fall (September to November)

As we have mentioned, fall in Cappadocia is one of the best times to visit. The mild temperature is perfect for exploring Cappadocia’s outdoor attractions. Visitors can go hiking without fear of catching a sunstroke.

Fall also sees significantly fewer tourists than in the summer, which means visitors can explore the most popular gems in Cappadocia such as Goreme Open-Air Museum without seeing a big crowd. It also means you don’t have to book your accommodation way in advance.

Though not the driest season, fall is dry enough for the hot air balloons to take off regularly. It is the least windy season of the year, so hot air balloons are less likely to cancel due to strong winds.

Cappadocia in Winter (December to early March)

Winter is a special time in Cappadocia. With the temperatures regularly dropping below freezing and decent precipitation, you can expect snow quite often in the winter in Cappadocia . During the day, the temperature hovers in the single digits, but at night, the temperature plummets below zero most of the time.

Visitors can still explore the outdoor attractions of Cappadocia as long as they are dressed in warm layers. The underground cities are especially nice since their temperature stays moderate all year round.

Hot air balloon rides are not regular in the winter, due to the wet conditions and possibly icy surface for landing. But when they do take off, you are blessed with one of the most unique landscapes in the world – a beautiful desert with fairy chimneys covered in a sheet of snow!

Winter is also the lowest season in Cappadocia. And even popular tourist towns such as Goreme and Uchisar are like ghost towns!

A lot of the hotels and facilities shut down for the winter, simply because it takes more money to run them than what they make back. There are also fewer tour companies to select from.

But at the same time, there are fewer people looking for places to stay, which is definitely a blessing if you are looking to stay at some of the famous cave hotels .

Cappadocia in Spring (Late March to May)

Spring is not a bad time to visit Cappadocia. The temperatures are moderate which makes it nice for exploring the outdoors.

However, visitors need to be aware that Spring is the rainiest season in Cappadocia. In April and May, there is an average of 14 rainy days per month, which is nearly 50 percent. It is also the windiest, which means the hot air balloons don’t take off as often.

For hikers, this is arguably one of the better times to travel to Cappadocia. The valleys are dotted with spring blossoms, which makes the scenery even more gorgeous.

Similar to fall, make sure you pack some winter clothes for the nights!

If you are visiting Cappadocia, chances are you want to experience the epic hot air balloon rides over the surreal landscapes of Cappadocia at sunrise . But when is the best time for them?

The best time to visit Cappadocia for hot air balloons is in the summer. The months of June to August see the least rain and wind, which means your hot air balloon rides are less likely to get canceled. 

Summer mornings are also the warmest of the year. You can wear your nice outfit for some cute Insta photos with the hot air balloons without worrying about freezing your butt off.

The only downside to visiting Cappadocia in the summer is that it’s the peak of the summer season. If you wish to experience the hot air balloons, make sure you prebook them ahead of time or else they might be completely sold out.

Autumn is the second best time to visit Cappadocia for hot air balloons. Rain is slightly more common than in the summer, but it is still rare enough that you get regular hot air balloon takeoffs.

Spring and winter are the months with the most amount of precipitation and wind. Hot air balloons are rare in the winter because the ground can be wet or covered in a layer of ice, which makes landing dangerous.

Also, even slight rain makes controlling the hot air balloon much more challenging . But when they do take off, you get the chance of seeing Cappadocia with a blanket of white fluffy snow! 

Best Time to Visit Cappadocia For Hiking

From Love Valley to Rose Valley, Cappadocia is full of amazing hiking opportunities. But unfortunately, hiking in Cappadocia can be quite dangerous, especially with its extreme temperatures and lack of shade. 

For that reason, the best time to visit Cappadocia for hiking is fall. During Fall, which is the months of September and October, the temperature is moderately warm during the day. You are less likely to get heat stroke or any heat-related illness. Rain is also fairly uncommon in the fall.

In September and October, there are only 4 and 8 rain days, respectively. Even when it rains in Cappadocia, it is usually very light and short.

Spring has similar temperatures as Fall, but the only difference is that there is a lot more rain in the Spring. The upside is that spring blossoms are gorgeous in the valleys.

Summer is a bad time to go hiking, especially if you are not experienced. The summer heat in Cappadocia is excruciating. There is minimal shade and dehydration and sunburn are real risks in the summers.

Winter is not a bad time to go hiking, but the cold temperatures aren’t suited for long hikes. If you get lost out on of the hiking trails in Cappadocia, that is going to become a serious issue!

Best Time to Visit Cappadocia To Avoid The Crowds

Without a doubt, the best time to visit Cappadocia to avoid the crowds is in the winter. Winter in Cappadocia is quite desolate. Many of the local restaurants and tour agencies shut down to bear the quiet winter. Tourism is at its lowest, and one of the reasons for that is the weather is absolute crap.

Hot air balloon rides in the winter are rare because most of them get canceled due to sub-optimal flight conditions. You are taking a big gamble if you visit Cappadocia in the winter hoping to fly in one of the balloons.

The shoulder seasons in Cappadocia, autumn and spring, are excellent alternatives. Though you’ll see more tourists, you’ll at least have a good chance of getting on the hot air balloon and exploring some of the sights in Cappadocia.

Best Month to Visit Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia in January

• Average Temperature: -5°C (22°F) Lows, 4°C (40°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 36 mm in 12 Days
• Maximum Sustained Wind: 6.2 Knots

January is the heart of winter in Cappadocia. Freezing temperatures are not uncommon, especially in the late evening and early mornings. Tourism is at one of its lowest, if not the lowest, in the entire year. After the New Years’ holiday crowd goes, Cappadocia becomes rather quiet.

Don’t expect the hot air balloons to run regularly in January.

Cappadocia in February

• Average Temperature: -4°C (23°F) Lows, 6°C (44°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 39 mm in 12 Days
• Maximum Sustained Wind: 6.5 Knots

The weather in Cappadocia in February is very much like the weather in January. February is still in the heart of winter, which means that freezing temperatures and snow are very common.

The temperature in February is slightly higher than that of January, but it is still very low. Tourism is still low, though a tad better than in January.

Visitors will find better deals and cheaper prices on hotels and tours, at least for the ones that are still operating. Hot air balloons do not take off regularly in February. 

Cappadocia in March

• Average Temperature: 0°C (31°F) Lows, 12°C (54°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 48 mm in 12 Days
• Maximum Sustained Wind: 7.3 Knots

March is the transition month between Cappadocia’s winter and spring. In the earlier half of the month, the temperature remains quite cold and it is still possible to see snow.

But in the latter half of the month, the temperature is starting to get warmer. Visitors are starting to be able to enjoy the outdoor attractions of Cappadocia. Hot air balloons are starting to run more regularly and more tourists are starting to come back. 

Cappadocia in April

• Average Temperature: 4°C (39°F) Lows, 17°C (64°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 45 mm in 14 Days
• Maximum Sustained Wind: 7.6 Knots

April is the official start of spring in Cappadocia. Spring is usually marked by lots of rain and Cappadocia is no exception.

Though it rains on average 14 out of 30 days in the month, the rainfall is quite low. This means visitors can still hike in the valleys and go exploring the different sights in Cappadocia.

Life is starting to return back to Cappadocia. Spring blossoms start to dot the landscapes, and hikers are blessed with some incredible scenery. Hot air balloons run more often than in March, but they could be canceled due to the rain and wind.

Cappadocia in May

• Average Temperature: 7°C (45°F) Lows, 22°C (73°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 56 mm in 14 Days
• Maximum Sustained Wind: 7.2 Knots

May is the rainiest month in Cappadocia with about 56 mm in 14 days, which is not the best for hot air balloon flights.

The temperature is one of the best in the entire year. It is not too hot to explore the valleys of Cappadocia, go hiking, or just chill out on a rooftop admiring the views.

The nights are still cold and you’ll definitely need a light jacket. We recommend packing a rain jacket when visiting Cappadocia in spring. 

Cappadocia in June

• Average Temperature: 11°C (51°F) Lows, 27°C (81°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 40 mm in 8 Days
• Maximum Sustained Wind: 6 Knots

June is the transition month between Cappadocia’s spring and summer. You’ll find more temperate weather and a higher chance of precipitation in the first half of the month, but in the latter half, it is dry and hot. Tourists are returning to Cappadocia in flocks to enjoy its nice weather and clear skies.

The famous Cappadox festival typically occurs in June. Cappadox is a multi-day outdoor cultural festival with music, art and gastronomy. It made its debut in 2015 and has been one of the most famous events in Turkey ever since. If you plan on attending Cappadox, make sure you reserve your accommodations way in advance.

Cappadocia in July

• Average Temperature: 13°C (56°F) Lows, 31°C (88°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 13 mm in 3 Days

July is the high season in Cappadocia and it is busy!

With little to no rain in the entire month, hot air balloons are taking off more frequently than ever. Depending on the season, visitors might be able to witness the Hot Air Balloon Festival, which is a multi-day festival that occurs annually in July or August.

Visitors will see hundreds of uniquely shaped hot air balloons in the sky – from spaceships to animals and flowers. There was a cow and chicken-shaped balloon one year – absolutely epic.

This is the biggest festival in Cappadocia, some make sure you plan accordingly and book everything in advance. Unfortunately, the date of the balloon festival changes every year, so you have to be alert!

Cappadocia in August

• Average Temperature: 13°C (55°F) Lows, 31°C (88°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 8 mm in 2 Days

August is the least rainy month of the year in Cappadocia. However, we definitely wouldn’t consider this the best time to visit. Why? It is simply too hot.

With little humidity, dry weather, and high temperature, exploring Cappadocia’s outdoor attractions can become dangerous. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the area, but they might want to make sure they bring plenty of water with them.

August is one of the best months for hot air balloons. With mild mornings and little to no wind and rain, hot air balloons take off regularly. 

Cappadocia in September

• Average Temperature: 9°C (48°F) Lows, 27°C (80°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 12 mm in 4 Days

September is probably the best month to go to Cappadocia. With average temperatures ranging from 9-27 degrees Celsius and little rainfall all throughout the month, this is a great time to explore Cappadocia’s many attractions. September is the end of summer vacation, which means you’ll find considerably fewer crowds than in July and August, but equally stunning weather.

In the daytime, you can explore the numerous hiking trails of Cappadocia without a huge risk of heat exhaustion. In the evening, it is warm enough to walk around town with a light jacket. September is the best time of year to visit for many reasons.

Cappadocia in October

• Average Temperature: 5°C (41°F) Lows, 21°C (69°F) Highs
• Rainfall: 34 mm in 8 Days
• Maximum Sustained Wind: 5.8 Knots

October is another great time of the year to visit Cappadocia. As the heart of autumn in Cappadocia, visitors can expect mild temperature and little rainfall. Exploring the outdoors of Cappadocia is enjoyable with the cooler environment.

Compared to September, the crowd is even smaller, which means you have an even easier time booking your favorite cave hotel. October is one of the last months when everything in Cappadocia is open, which means you have plenty of options for accommodations and dining.

The weather is cold, but it isn’t cold enough to discourage you from sightseeing in Cappadocia. In fact, it might be perfect for anyone thinking of doing strenuous hiking there.

Hot air balloon rides are still relatively common, but make sure you wear something nice and thick. When you are up in the air, the temperature is much lower.

December is the official start of winter in Cappadocia. Tourism is relatively low in the beginning half of the month but starts to pick up towards the end due to the holiday season.

But unfortunately, with the weather, hot air balloons don’t take out that frequently during December. Nonetheless, tourists can enjoy Cappadocia’s outdoor attractions , but just remember to pack some heavy jackets.

Exploring the underground cities is especially nice during this time as they are naturally insulated. If you are staying in a cave hotel, make sure you pick one with a heater because you’ll need it!

You want to visit Cappadocia in Turkey, you’ve seen photos of the hot air balloons , the fairy chimneys and the incredible landscape but what is the best time to visit Cappadocia?

And most importantly,  what is the best time to visit Cappadocia for hot air balloons?

In my opinion, the weather determines what is the best time to go to Cappadocia. Cappadocia is a dry desert-type landscape meaning Cappadocia weather is hot in Summer and cold in Winter !

Although the Cappadocia hot air balloons run all year, the hot air balloons are often stopped due to the wind, rain and snow and you don’t want to miss out on seeing the hot air balloons in Cappadocia!

In this post, I am going to tell you what Cappadocia is like each month of the year based on the experience of my followers on Instagram who have been to Cappadocia in these months!

Best Month To Visit Cappadocia

If you’re looking for a quick answer, based on the below experiences from people who have been to Cappadocia and told us about the Cappadocia weather in each month, and from using my own experience..

The best month to visit Cappadocia and the best season to visit Cappadocia is definitely:

Late Spring and Autumn – April, May, early June, late September and early-mid October.

Best Time to Visit Cappadocia For Hot Air Balloons

The hot air balloons are not all that Cappadocia has to offer, there are so many more things to do in Cappadocia .

But, they are so unique and an amazing way to see the landscape of Cappadocia and whether you go in a hot air balloon , watch them from your hotel rooftop (I recommend staying at Design Cappadocia Hotel !), or both, seeing them will definitely make your trip to Cappadocia.

The wind is what cancels the hot air balloons in Cappadocia and in the winter months they often only run for half of the days in a month, in the summer months they usually run most of the month, so keep this in mind when planning your Cappadocia trip!

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Travel Tip

Be sure to book your Hot Air Balloon ride for the very first morning you’re in Cappadocia, this way, if it gets cancelled you will have your second morning and perhaps third morning to go on it. If you book it on your last morning and it gets cancelled, you have no other mornings to go!

Cappadocia in January

January in Cappadocia is cold and it’s very likely to snow in January too.

You may have seen beautiful photos with snow on the ground and hot air balloons in the sky because the hot air balloons sometimes still run in the snow and some days in January in Cappadocia can be cold but beautifully sunny .

However, the snow does stop the hot air balloons a lot of the time in January and from a practical point of view, a lot of Cappadocia is very hilly, especially the town of Goreme and I wouldn’t like to be there when it’s icy!

For the best time to visit Cappadocia, January is not it unless you are happy with very very cold and snowy days and the possibility of the hot air balloons in Cappadocia not running.

Also, bare in mind that Cappadocia in Winter is very quiet so the town of Goreme which is the main tourist town will not be busy and buzzing in the winter months in Cappadocia.

Cappadocia in February

Cappadocia weather in February is very similar to January. It is very cold with the possibility of snow and the balloons running less than half of the month.

For the best month to go to Cappadocia, February is not a month I recommend unless you are happy with cold days, cold nights, some snow and the possibility of the hot air balloons not running when you are there.

Cappadocia in March

March in Cappadocia seems to bring more wind to the region than any other month of the year.

Some days can be cloudy , other days can be clear blue skies and the weather in Cappadocia can change dramatically in this month, so if you are looking at March as the best time to visit Cappadocia, keep that in mind.

This year my friends visited in Cappadocia in March and in the middle of March it was snowing so keep in mind March in Cappadocia can still be very cold!

Wind often cancels the hot air balloons in Cappadocia and it’s likely you will face their cancellations due to wind in March. The day time temperature picks up in March, it will still be cold in the morning and when getting up for your balloon ride.

For the Cappadocia best time to visit, March is a better month than January and February but if you want better and more enjoyable weather, wait a bit longer, or at least until the end of March.

Cappadocia in April

I had a lot of responses from my Instagram friends for April in Cappadocia when I asked them about the best time to visit Cappadocia so it seems this is a popular month to go !

April in Cappadocia seems like it brings all weather . It offers a nice daytime temperature for looking around in the day and offers perfect hiking weather in Cappadocia because of the cooler days than the summer.

However, you may still experience some snow like the most recent Aprils did and some cloudy days.

If you are happy to experience a range of temperatures and weather types, April could be the best time to visit Cappadocia for you!

Personally, I would like to go back to Cappadocia in April as I feel like it is the best time to visit Cappadocia for cooler but enjoyable temperatures.

Cappadocia in May

May in Cappadocia is the best time to visit Cappadocia in the sense that the daytime temperature in Cappadocia is increasing and the coldness of winter is over.

Cappadocia in May often brings beautiful blue skies mornings which is the best time to visit Cappadocia for hot air balloons as they love clear blue skies, and historically in May they run most days of the month.

May can still bring cloud and overcast skies later on it in the day. However, Cappadocia when it’s overcast is still very beautiful.

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Travel Tip – Be sure to book your Hot Air Balloon ride for the very first morning you’re in Cappadocia, this way, if it gets cancelled you will have your second morning and perhaps third morning to go on it. Cappadocia in June

June in Cappadocia has been described as beautiful with beautiful warm nights as well as beautiful hot days.

Cappadocia cools down at night during the year, sometimes to a temperature that is too cold and cool, however, in June it cools down to a pleasant summer evening temperature.

The end of June brings much hotter temperatures but definitely not the hottest temperatures in Turkey, it’s hotter in other places in Turkey in June.

Without a doubt, July in Cappadocia is hot! It was described as hot but doable by one of my friends on Instagram, but do be prepared for hot days and warm nights.

With this heat comes beautiful blue sky sunny days for most of July and there are ways to beat the heat in Cappadocia, you can go hiking and exploring earlier in the moring and around sunset and relax in your cool cave room hotel during the midday heat.

The best time to travel to Cappadocia if you want guaranteed blue sky and really perfect weather in the sense of sun is July.

I didn’t receive any replies on Instagram about visiting Cappadocia in August and this maybe because it is an extremely hot month to visit. The hottest month of the year .

However like in July, this heat generally brings sunny and clear days which are very beautiful and they mean that the hot air balloons are very likely to run.

The warm mornings will also make getting up early for your hot air balloon in Cappadocia much more enjoyable than in the winter months!

When looking for the best time of year to visit Cappadocia, I’d say that August isn’t it unless you are prepared for very hot and sweaty days.

The weather in September in Cappadocia changes a lot between the start of the month with the end of Summer in Turkey and the end of the month with the start of Autumn.

In 2020 I visited Cappadocia in late September and although the middle of the day was hot , it did not feel unbearable and the nights cooled down nicely.

The best thing about visiting Cappadocia in September is also that the days are usually blue sky and sunny. This is what all of my 5 days were like in September when I went with just 1 cloudy evening.

Many of my friends on Instagram also visited Cappadocia in September showing that it is a best month to visit Cappadocia with many people saying they think its the best time to visit Cappadocia for perfect weather.

If you are looking to go hiking in Cappadocia, be warned that September is still a hot month for hiking unless you go out very early or leave it until closer to sunset. Hot when hiking

Cappadocia in October

October brings Autumn in Cappadocia and from my experience, early Autumn is the best season to visit Cappadocia for cooler but pleasant temperatures , blue skies and golden trees in Cappadocia.

The evenings and night time in October in Cappadocia definitely cool down and can get chilly if it becomes windy however the days are really lovely .

October is a great time for hiking in Cappadocia and really getting out and exploring the landscape and as for the best time to visit Cappadocia fo r hot air balloons , they may be cancelled in October but there is a good chance they will run!

In my opinion, October is another month which is the best time to visit Cappadocia and I would definitely return in early-mid October again.

How to get the best flights??

I use Skyscanner to book all of my flights! I’m a huge fan of Skyscanner because I love how easy it is to compare different destinations and different dates for the best price and route!

For example, I type in ‘everywhere’ in the destination if I have fixed dates and want to find the best flights on those dates on Skyscanner. And if I have a set destination I’ll look at the ‘month view’ to check the cheapest days to fly in that month!

Cappadocia in November

Although November is Autumn in many countries in the Northern Hemisphere, it seems that November in Cappadocia brings in Winter quickly .

The comments I got from people who had been to Cappadocia in November and spoke about the Cappadocia weather said that it was too cold, super cold and hard to wake up for the balloons because of the cold! However, November does often bring blue and clear skies !

For Cappadocia best time to go, November is not it unless you are prepared for these colder temperatures.

Cappadocia in December

December in Cappadocia, like January and February, is very very cold .

There will be less balloons because of the weather and because of the fewer tourists and the towns, especially Goreme was described to me as feeling desolate because it was so quiet and cold.

For the best time of year to go to Cappadocia, in my opinion, it is not winter unless you enjoy cold temperatures and like the idea of it being a quiet place rather than the buzzing vibe that the middle of the year brings.

The Cappadocia area has been settled by humans since prehistoric times, and over the centuries it’s been occupied by the Hittites, Persians, Romans, early Christians, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks and Ottomans.

Historically, Cappadocia Turkey is probably best known for being a place where Christians settled and sought refuge from the hostile Roman Empire, secretly carving thousands of houses, churches, and caves into the hills.

Most of these rock buildings and underground cities can still be seen today, and they look just like Star Wars movie sets. Supposedly George Lucas wanted to film parts of the original Star Wars movies in Cappadocia, but the Turkish government turned it down.

Cappadocia is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site , and today it’s one of the tourism hotspots of Turkey. It draws millions of tourists every year (3.8 million in 2019!) who come to enjoy the unique landscapes, cave houses, and hot air balloon rides.

Where Is Cappadocia Turkey?

Cappadocia is located in central Turkey, and the nearest major city and airport is Kayseri.

The Cappadocia tourist area includes the small towns of Goreme, Uchisar, and Urgup, but almost everyone bases themselves in Goreme since it has the best hotels and restaurant choices.

How To Get To Cappadocia Turkey

The best way to get to Cappadocia Turkey is to fly domestically from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport (SAW) to the Kayseri airport (ASR).

There are a bunch of flights doing this route every day and it only takes 1.5 hours. A one way ticket can cost as little as 150 Liras ($20 USD)! You can shop for flights to Kayseri at Skyscanner.

After you arrive in Kayseri, you’ll need a van transfer since it’s a 1 hour drive to the Goreme town center in Cappadocia. You can arrange this with your hotel, or book it online.

This is a neat valley with a lot of uniquely shaped natural rock formations.

Some of them look like the typical chimney rocks, while others are shaped like animals or humans. The most popular one is Camel Rock, which has a neck and humps like a camel!

Like the name implies, Monks Valley was inhabited by monks in ancient times who carved their own homes and windows into the steep chimney shaped rocks.

Avanos is known for its pottery and artistic plates and mugs, and even if you don’t plan on buying souvenirs it’s definitely worth a visit to see their wares being made. Lots of talent!

This valley gets its name from the natural phallic shaped rocks. There are a bunch of short, easy trails in the valley if you want to do some easy hiking!

This area is full of interesting cave churches from the 11th and 12th centuries. You can go inside them, and some of the frescoes on the walls are fantastic.

Uchisar is a town just a short distance southwest of Goreme, and the central landmark is a 60-meter tall ‘castle mountain’ carved into rocks.

It’s the highest point of Cappadocia Turkey, and you can get some amazing panoramic views from the top of the tower.

• Derinkuyu Underground City

There are 36 underground cities in Cappadocia and the deepest one is Derinkuyu.

This city is 85 meters deep in the ground, and it has stables, churches, storage rooms, and thousands of ventilation ducts that gave it fresh air when people were living in it. It’s a fascinating place to explore!

Derinkuyu is part of the Cappadocia Green Tour , but some companies go to Kaymakli instead. Kaymakli is the deepest underground city, and Derinkuyu is the widest.

This is a 100 meter deep valley formed by the Melendiz River.

At one time, this valley was home to 80,000 people, and thousands of their cave houses and churches can still be seen in the rock walls. It’s an amazing area that can be seen on a day trip with some light trekking.

This is a peaceful clear river that runs through the Ihlara Valley, and most day tours stop by the river for lunch.

In the autumn season (mid-October), you can see bright yellow fall colors here.

It looks just like a Star Wars set, and you can go inside most of the buildings, which date back to the 8th or 9th centuries.

This is a great hiking valley near Uchisar with lots of easy walking trails that wind through the chimney rocks and cave houses.

How To Get Around Cappadocia

• Walking: If you’re staying in Goreme and want some exercise, a bunch of nice sights will be in walking distance from your hotel. Some ideas would be Rose Valley, Lovers Hill (sunrise point), and the countless cave houses and churches.
• Horseback: This is another fun way to go sightseeing in Cappadocia. You can find 2-hour horseback riding tours online starting at $50 USD.
• Car + Driver: The most comfortable and efficient way to explore Cappadocia is to hire a private driver . Prices for a 4-8 hour tour start at $60 USD. If you have a couple of friends joining you, this can be very economical. If your group is bigger than 3, you can even hire a private van for even better savings.
• Scooter: As a solo traveler, renting a scooter in Goreme can be cost effective sometimes. Prices run about $30-$40 USD for the whole day.
• ATV: Quad biking can be another fun way to see Cappadocia, and the terrain is perfect for it. You can find Cappadocia ATV tours online starting at $25 USD for 2 hours.
• Group Tour: There are lots of Cappadocia group tours that you can join if you’re a couple or solo traveler. These normally include hotel pickup, lunch, and a full day of sightseeing. Read the section below for some more info on recommended Cappadocia tours!

Best Cappadocia Tours

The 4 popular tours in Cappadocia are color coded (Red, Green, Blue, Orange) and each one covers a different area of Cappadocia. My personal favorites are the Red Tour and Green Tour .

The Red Tour covers sights like Devrent Valley, Monks Valley, Avanos, the Goreme Open Air Museum, and Uchisar Castle. The Green Tour covers Ihlara Valley, Melendiz River, Selime Monastery, Pigeon Valley, and the Derinkuyu Underground City.

The Blue and Orange tours are less popular, and they cover sights like Ortasihar and the Gulsehir Open Air Museum. I didn’t do these tours, but we plan to try them next time we visit Cappadocia.

For the Red and Green tours, you can book them with a tour agency on the street in the Cappadocia, or you can pre-book the same tours online, which is what I did.

How Long To Stay

At least 2 full days in Cappadocia are needed if you want to do both Red and Green tours and see the highlights of the countryside.

I’m sure you could spend longer too if you want to hit up more of the hiking paths and leave no stone unturned. Besides, Goreme town is a great place to get stuck, with loads of good Turkish restaurants!

If you plan to do the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon ride, I would add at least 2 extra days to your itinerary in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. The balloon rides can get canceled on windy days, so it’s good to have a little extra time as a safety buffer.

Best Time To Visit Cappadocia

The best time to visit Cappadocia Turkey just depends on what you’re looking for. It’s a nice place all year round, but the temperatures go up and down quite a bit with the seasons.

Cappadocia has hot summers, and cold winters with snow. In either season, the landscapes will be stunning and photogenic, and hotels have air conditioning and heating so you’ll still be comfortable.

I went in the autumn (October) and this seemed just about perfect. The crowds weren’t too bad, and the leaves on the trees were almost at peak color.

Spring would also be a great time to visit, because you’ll get cooler temperatures and less crowds.

Turkey is a geographically diverse country where you can enjoy the merits of each season. The best time of year to visit Cappadocia is a hard pick because you see many facets of this beautiful place in different seasons.

So, when is the best time of year to visit Cappadocia? You can plan your visit to Cappadocia between April to June and September to October. The winter often brings snow, and the peak season during the summer months can be overcrowded.

So, why is this time frame the best time of year to visit Cappadocia? Next, we’ll talk about the diverse climate and geography of Turkey.

The Climate of Cappadocia Throughout the Year

To understand Cappadocia’s climate, first, you should know the exact location of this beautiful area. Cappadocia sits almost at the heart of Anatolia, which is modern Turkey, a little to the east. The Taurus Mountains are in the south, and the Black Sea is in the north.

Cappadocia is located in the inner part of Turkey, where the continental climate is dominant. In such areas, the winters can be cold, and snowfall for an extended period is regular.

On the contrary, the summers are arid. These aren’t the seasons you want to be outside to do sightseeing.

Typically, spring and fall are the best seasons to enjoy what nature offers in areas with a continental climate. The weather can be windy in spring and fall. Still, most of the time, the weather is suitable for outdoor activities like sightseeing or hiking.

When you take a closer look at each month of spring, you can see certain differences. March is still a tad cold compared to April. Sometimes, you can see snowfall, even in March. This fact makes March not an ideal candidate for a visit.

April and May have temperate weather; however, April can still be windy if you consider hot balloon tours.

Generally speaking, the fall is the second good option to visit Cappadocia. During September and October, the weather is still reasonably warm.

Nevertheless, you can feel the footsteps of winter coming around the end of October. November isn’t so viable since the freezing wind will surely keep you from enjoying the scenery and nature. Consider all these factors before booking your trip and packing your suitcase with the right kind of clothes for your visit .

Let’s take a better look at the geography of Cappadocia to learn more about the climate.

Geography of Cappadocia

As we mentioned before, Cappadocia is pretty close to the heart of Anatolia. This region is a high plateau surrounded and covered with mountains from north and south. Cappadocia is on a plateau, which is about 1000 m (3281 ft) in altitude.

In the south, the Taurus Mountains, which is actually a range, directly affects the climate. These mountains stop the airflow coming from the Mediterranean Sea.

The rain-bearing clouds can’t reach the region from the south because of the high peaks. That’s why the area doesn’t get much rainfall and is classified as semi-arid.

The unique feature of this area is the antique volcanic activity. Many dormant volcanic peaks can be found in this region. The highest peak is Mount Erciyes, and that is about 4000 m (13 123 ft) high.

These volcanic peaks are the result of the rise of the Taurus Mountains and the moving of the Anatolian Plateau to the north due to this formation.

After the volcanic activity ceased in the area, the remaining tuft became a layer on the plateau. The lava and basalt mixture covered the tufted layer.

With water and wind corrosion, these layers were shaped intrinsically. This process is how the hoodoos, commonly known as fairy chimneys, were formed in this area. 

In antiquity, Cappadocia was shaped by water; however, now it’s semi-arid because of the same reason that created the layers of tuft in the first place.

This is the short story of how the spectacular geography of Cappadocia was formed. Geography directly affects the climate and the reasons for visiting Cappadocia.

Now, let’s see some of the tourist attractions on this iconic landscape and when to do which activity in this region.

When to Take a Hot Balloon Ride in Cappadocia

The allure of Cappadocia is all about the unique geography. Ancient people from millennia ago understood this area’s beauty, and they decided to carve their cities right in the volcanic formations.

Nowadays, Cappadocia isn’t just about seeing the beauty of this landscape. The tourist attractions are also undoubtedly impressive.

Of course, most of the places you’ll visit in Cappadocia are going to be in the open air. The first and foremost tourist attraction of this area is the hot air balloon rides.

To see this spectacular geography from a distance, many tourists hop on to the baskets. They take a magnificent tour of the region on the air.

Since hot air balloon rides are all about the weather, you should consider the climate if you want to do it in Cappadocia. According to many tourists, the best time to take a hot air balloon ride is between May and June in the spring/summer season, September and October in the fall season.

This time April may not be the best time since the winds are the main problem. They directly affect the takeoffs of hot air balloons.

If you plan to be in Cappadocia for a few days just for the hot air balloon experience, April can be a bit risky. June seems to be the ideal period. July will be quite crowded since it’s the peak tourism season of Turkey in general.

Especially for trekking, to see the magnificent underground cities and visit the ancient sacred monasteries, winter and summer aren’t the best options.

All the time, we emphasized that winter isn’t an ideal time to visit Cappadocia. However, if you want to see this unique region, the hot air balloons are year-round. 

In addition to this, most of the hotels are open year-round. In these hotels, you can enjoy the scenery of Cappadocia with warm hot chocolate in your hand in an affordable luxury hotel . Staying in a cave hotel makes for an interesting winter getaway.

Sometimes, the allure of hot air balloon tours makes Mount Erciyes go unnoticed when you consider visiting Cappadocia. If you like skiing, Mount Erciyes is a good alternative for even the Alpines.

Plus, the region won’t be overcrowded this season. Don’t fret about visiting Cappadocia even in winter.

You have probably also seen the photos of the Hot Air Balloons over the fairy chimneys and realised the main draw for people visiting the area.

If you are planning on heading up in a balloon you will want to know when the best time to visit is!

The Cappadocia region is situated in a dry desert environment – It is hot in the summers and cold in the winters. Balloon trips happen every day of the year, but they will be canceled due to rain, snow and wind speed.

My one piece of advice to you is, book your balloon flight for your first morning in Cappadocia. If that gets canceled you still have options for your next few days. Book it for the last day and it gets canceled, you have no options!

Best Months to Visit Cappadocia

If you want the quick answer and you don’t want to read the rest of this article then –

The Best Time Visit Cappadocia is Late Spring and Early Autumn. The months of April, May, early June, late September and October. 

The weather is cooler and there are less tourists around than in the summer months.

During the summer months they put up in excess of 300 balloons in the sky every morning. I have just returned from a trip in early december and there were around 80 balloons in the sky. That gives you some idea as to how busy the summer is!

Cappadocia in January is going to be cold and also likely to snow. Although the days are cold, you can still have very sunny, blue sky days.

You have probably seen stunning photos of Cappadocia covered in snow? Yes, it looks stunning but just keep in mind that the balloon rides are likely to be canceled and then you may not get your desired Instagram photo!

Cappadocia is also very hilly so getting around can also be difficult when it snows. If you are going to go in January then I would advise staying in Goreme where everything is central.

February in Cappadocia is very similar to January. You are going to have cold days with potential snow. As January and February are very quiet in Cappadocia there may not be so much happening and not all activities may be available to you.

We are still in the winter months in Cappadocia and although the temperatures start to increase, so do the winds.

The day time temperatures in Cappadocia start to increase in March, but keep in mind once that sun goes down, the nights are still cold.

Balloon trips will get canceled in March because of the winds, so my advice is to skip March and move your trip a few weeks!

Cappadocia in April

Now the temperatures are getting warmer, April is a popular month to visit Cappadocia. However, keep in mind April also sees an increase in rain as well.

The day time temperatures are picking up aslo making it pleasant for trekking around the region. 

There is still the possibility of cloudy days in April and in the past there has still been snow in April!

Cappadocia in May

Winter is now officially over and both the daytime and nighttime temperatures are increasing. 

May is one of the best times to visit Cappadocia as it brings blue sky mornings which are perfect for your balloon photos!!

The region is now getting busier with tourists and the balloon trips and other activities are now running daily.

Average Daily Temperatures  7℃ to 22℃

Cappadocia in June

At the beginning of June both day and nighttime temperatures are pleasant in Cappadocia. Towards the end of June the day time temperatures are starting to get on the hot side!

If you like to get away and feel the heat then June is a great time to visit.

Average Daily Temperatures  10℃ to 27℃

Cappadocia in July

July in Cappadocia is hot! You will have amazing clear skies and sunny days, but your visit will depend on if you can cope with the heat?

There is lots to explore in Cappadocia and this generally involves a lot of walking. If you are not great with the heat then I would potentially avoid Cappadocia in July.

The nice thing about the Cave Hotels in Cappadocia, they are always cool inside your room. Some hotels have swimming pools to assist the cooling process. 

So, if you still want to head out and explore in July then you have the option of getting out of the sunshine in the afternoon and then exploring when it is cooler in the mornings and early evening!

Cappadocia in August

August is the hottest month of the year in Cappadocia. Like July you are going to have amazing clear blue skies and long sunny days. 

It is going to be lovely and warm when you get up for your sunrise Hot Air Balloon Trip, but then the rest of the day is going to be hot and sweaty!

Cappadocia in September

September in Cappadocia is a month of two halves. The beginning of September is very similar to August, but towards the end the daily temperatures are dropping and you realise autumn is on its way.

From the middle of September onwards I think it is one of the perfect times of the year to visit Cappadocia. The days are warm, sunny and the skies are blue – what more could you ask for!

Cappadocia in October

In October the Autumn has well and truly arrived. The day time temperatures are dropping to a pleasant temperature but the nighttime temperatures are again getting chilly!

You will still have the advantage of clear blue skies during the day, making it a perfect time for your balloon ride. Sunrise is also getting later in the morning giving you more time in bed!

October is a great time for exploring Cappadocia with the lower temperatures. If you wanted to head out on one of the many treks in the area the temperatures in October make for a pleasant experience.

Cappadocia in November

The temperatures in November are dropping both day and night. The temperatures in the night time are very cold so make sure you take some warm clothing with you for the early mornings and evenings.

Skies are still blue and clear, and the region is quieter with tourists.

If you want to go and explore Cappadocia in its quiet time and don’t mind the cold, then November could be a great choice for you!

Another thing to point out is they have different prices for the balloon trips during different seasons/months. These range from £150 – £250+ depending on the month you go. If you want a cheaper experience then head out in the quieter months!

Cappadocia in December 

I have just come back from a trip in early December. The weather during the day was blue skies and at times you felt warm in the sunshine (but you were wearing a coat!). The evenings are very cold! You certainly needed to dress up warm. 

Everything was very quiet, which was nice as you could explore without the crowds and everything was open.

As I said earlier in the article, we still had 80+ balloons go up on the morning we went up, so there are still lots of people visiting the area. 

I was told that they were expecting snow the week after I left, so I think I timed the trip perfectly! 

Don’t let December put you off! The weather was fine as long as you were happy to wrap up warm early in the morning and then during the evenings.

The best time to visit Cappadocia is during the shoulder seasons from April to June (spring) and September to October (autumn). This is the perfect time to hike and explore the Red and Rose valleys. While living in Turkey, we drove over to Cappadocia about twice or even three times a year. It was a nice weekend away, and we enjoyed the comfortable hotels, great food, beautiful landscapes, and just getting away from the big city.

We’ve been to Cappadocia during every season, and each one brings its specific pros and cons. But no matter what it firmly sits on our top 5 best places to visit in Turkey list.

Climate of Cappadocia

Lying at a latitude of almost 39 degrees north, Cappadocia’s climate can be likened to that of northern California. It’s dry and warm most of the year.

The dryness makes it easier to put up with the highest and lowest temperatures throughout the year, but it does make you much thirstier, so keep that water near. During most months of the year, you can expect an average of eight days with some rain or snow.

The average highs don’t get much higher than 80 degrees (F), and the lows are around 30 degrees (F). The overall average temperature is about 62 degrees (F), so it is quite comfortable. ( source ).

Spring in Cappadocia

Spring is the wettest time of year, and it is my favorite season in Cappadocia. Even though there is a bit more rainfall, by the end of April the temperatures are getting quite comfortable and the flowers are beginning to bloom. Average temperatures range from about 35 – 70 degrees (F).

It’s a gorgeous time to visit Cappadocia, especially if you plan on doing some hiking as you can make it much farther than perhaps during the very hot and dry summer.

If you are looking for mostly blue skies and green grass, spring is the time for you. By late-June the landscape has turned from a brilliant new green to less vibrant, but layered beiges and browns.

In May, if you are lucky, you can drive a short distance to Tuz Golu (Salt Lake) and watch the flamingoes stop on their spring migration.

What should I bring in Spring?

The clothes you will want to pack for spring should include both long and short pants, layered tops, with at least one fleece, and hiking shoes, a good hat, and a rain jacket or small, collapsible umbrella.

For women I love this jacket, because it guards me against the rain, but also has a cozy lining to keep that evening chill at bay.

And for both men and women, we love these LAPASA lightweight thermals to keep in our backpacks, and then add as we get cold.

Spring Pros : fresh green grass, colorful wildflowers, farmers and locals smiling and working hard in the fields, stunning landscape photos. Cons : It can still be a bit chilly, especially in the early mornings and evenings, the tourists are starting to arrive and sights will get busy, the hot air balloons can’t fly in rain or gusty winds.

Summer in Cappadocia

Hot and dry, summer is the time that most people will visit this unique and beautiful area. As you get into July and August, you will hit the highest temperatures ranging up to 90 degrees (F). An occasional day will climb into the low hundreds, but it’s still hot, dry, and sunny so you won’t really notice the difference.

Tourism season is in full swing. It’s great because you can do all kinds of adventure activities, walk or hike through gorgeous valleys, cool off in the underground cities, and meet lots of like-minded travelers.

What should I bring in Summer?

Turkish people don’t really wear shorts or flip flops anywhere but the beach. I’m sure you’ll have some with you as you should definitely be visiting Kizkalesi or another beachy area if you are there during the summer, but I would confine wearing them to the hotel.

Capris are okay to wear just about anywhere (except on religious ground ie. a mosque). It’s a nice compromise between the reservedness of the Turkish people and not being too, too warm.

However there are a few things you definitely should not leave home without, as you tour and hike the exceptional valleys:

• A sun hat with a large brim and sunglasses
• Sunscreen and bug spray
• Good hiking sandals
• A good water bottle with filtration system for hiking

Summer Pros : Everything is open for business, you won’t be bored. It’s easy to get around. You can go to the beach after your time in Cappadocia. Cons : There will be crowds of people everywhere except the back-country hikes. You will have to make reservations for whatever you want to do as early as you can. It’s very hot!

Fall in Cappadocia

Fall is my second favorite season in Cappadocia because the evening light glows golden, the leaves are turning yellow, the temperature has cooled off, and you can hike, hike, hike.

It’s still pretty dry with only about eight rainy days per month, the hoteliers, restauranteurs, and tour operators are happy you’re still there and treat you even better than you could imagine. So, you can still do almost all the adventure-type activities that you would want to do.

The temperatures are between 30 and 60 degrees (F) which is perfect for hiking and biking. It’s still warm enough to eat dinner outside many of the days.

What should I bring in Fall?

Fall is a pretty easy season to prepare for. You will want to maximize your space by bringing less. Just bring a few short sleeved shirts that can be covered with a light fleece and you will be all set.

It’s the best season for hiking, since it’s dry and there’s not usually much mud. So bring your hiking boots and water bottle.

Fall Pros : Most if not all the tourists have gone home, so it’s quiet and there’s no need for too many reservations. The weather is pleasantly warm during the day and cool at night. Perfect. Cons : Towards the end of fall, it does start to get cold. Be prepared.

Winter in Cappadocia

It does get cold and even snow in Cappadocia. Temperatures can dip as low as 15 degrees (F). Located on the Anatolian plain, it can also get a bit windy, but the warmth of Turkish hospitality will warm you up as quickly as possible.

Even with the cold, surprisingly, winter in Cappadocia is cozy and fun. It definitely snows in the area, but the cave hotels are heated and most have kettles for a warm cup of tea or coffee.

The restaurants get all steamy and people are super happy to have you in their place of business. The tourist sites are empty of people and are gorgeous in their new coats of pristine snow.

Most of the tourist adventure business has died down. However, you are always welcome to call and see if they can accommodate you. You probably are not going to get that hot air balloon ride, though. For that, you’ll need to come in late spring to early fall.

What should I bring in Winter?

I can’t say it enough. Dress in layers, and bring enough socks to change them out when you get back to the hotel. A very warm jacket, maybe even ski pants so that you can keep warm as you visit all the outdoor sites and maybe do some short hikes into the valleys.

If you are going to sleep in a cave hotel, you will also want some warm pajamas. The caves are fun to sleep in, but they aren’t always as warm as you would like.

A trick I learned from traveling in Japan in winter is wearing ski pants to go traveling around in the snow. It keeps your bottom half warm and, most importantly, dry. Something like these outer pants work wonders.

Also, it’s important to remember:

• good gloves, especially for using a camera
• good warm, wool socks

Winter Pros : You will be able to be pretty much all alone as you tour the major sights in Cappadocia. The restaurants can be very cozy. Photos will be stunning! Cons : You can still hike, but many of the adventure activity businesses will have closed down for the season. It can be cold.

Ramadan Season in Cappadocia

Even though Ramadan isn’t technically a season, it’s a month of religious fasting and can make a difference if you are traveling during that time.

To begin with, observing Muslims cannot eat between sunrise and sundown, so they want a huge meal when the sun goes down. This is called “iftar”. In large cities, many restaurants will prepare an iftar meal, but they are usually sold out quickly by reservation.

In smaller regions, like Cappadocia, it’s hit or miss whether a restaurant will be open, but don’t worry some will. However, it is a good idea during this time to try and book hotels with a working restaurant in them so you don’t have to go out much.

It’s a myth that the locals will be upset if you are eating, they won’t be. They completely understand that not all people, especially tourists, won’t follow Muslim customs. However, it’s also a little bit more polite if you don’t sit at the front of a restaurant or eat outdoors on an open patio during Ramadan.

By no means should traveling during Ramadan slow you down, but just be aware that many people are observing it.

Our Conclusion – When is the Best Time to Go to Cappadocia?

Cappadocia is magical all year round. Whether it’s wetter or drier, hotter or colder, you will completely enjoy your time spent in this amazing region of Anatolia. Just like us, you’ll become regulars.

Spring (March-May)

Spring invigorates nature and brings life to Cappadocia’s plains and mountains. Around this time, winter’s chilly slumber sloughs away, and days become warmer, reaching 15-20°C (59-68°F).

Even though spring temperatures are ideal for discovering Cappadocia, visitors usually don’t flock to the area until summer. Therefore, pleasant weather and fewer crowds make the shoulder seasons of spring and fall the best season to visit Cappadocia.

In spring, the best month to visit Cappadocia is April since it’s warmer than early March, and the peak season is still a few months away.

Summer (June-August)

The warm and dry summer season offers the best months to visit Cappadocia. This lovely season bathes Cappadocia’s landscape in golden sunshine and uncovers the region’s beauty with a festive atmosphere.

Temperatures usually soar as high as 25-30°C (77-86°F) in Cappadocia in summer, turning the sky a luminous shade of blue. Yet, warm and dry summer weather presents the perfect opportunity to explore the area’s hidden canyons and volcanic valleys.

Another appeal of Cappadocian summer is open-air activities, like horseback riding, hiking, stargazing, and the iconic Cappadocia hot air balloon ride.

Even though it’s usually busy in Cappadocia in June, July, and August, you don’t need to worry. Since the area is extensive, you will discover the fascinating region and enjoy fun activities without long waits or crowds.

Autumn (September-October)

Winter (November-February)

Since winter is far from the peak season, you’ll have the whole region just for yourself. And, yes, walking around in winter might be a cold experience, but Cappadocia’s beauty and charming environment will surely warm your heart.

When we first arrived in Cappadocia, it didn’t feel like we were stepping out of a bus. It felt more like we were getting off a spaceship.

It was the oddest-looking landscape I had ever seen with its mushroom-capped fairy chimneys and cities carved in stone. Cave dwelling has a long history in Cappadocia so people have likened its landscape to the Flintstones but to me, it felt more like the surface of the moon, completely alien and not of this earth.

One of the things that surprised me the most about Turkey was its geographic diversity. Natural or man-made, there is so much to marvel at from its calcium travertines in Pamukkale to the minaret-filled skyline of Istanbul . But for me, Cappadocia topped them all. It’s beauty, as you’ll soon see, is out of this world.

And if you think it looks stunning from the ground, wait till you see it from the skies.

CAPPADOCIA AT A GLANCE

Cappadocia is an area in Central Anatolia best known for its unique moon-like landscape. Called fairy chimneys, the strange rock formations that the region is known for were formed through the millennia by intense volcanic activity and erosion.

They’re comprised of two types of rock – a harder outer basalt and a softer inner volcanic tufa rock. Sculpted by the elements over thousands of years, the tufa erodes at a faster rate, creating these alien-looking spires with dark mushroom-like caps.

For centuries, people have utilized the region’s soft volcanic rock to carve houses, cave churches, and monasteries, even underground cities going hundreds of feet deep.

From what I understand, some people still live in these cave dwellings today though most of them are now used for tourism. They’re marketed as cave hotels and are a popular choice of accommodation for tourists.

Because of the region’s unique landscape, one of the most popular things you can do here is to ride a hot air balloon. Early in the morning, just before sunrise, you’ll often find hundreds of colorful balloons dotting the sky.

Spectacular from the ground or from the air, it’s an unforgettable experience and a must-do in Cappadocia.

BEST TIME TO VISIT CAPPADOCIA

Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November) are the best times to visit Cappadocia. It isn’t peak season and the weather is moderate. Summer (June-August) can get pretty hot — up to 32°C/90°F — and it’s the busiest time of the year with tourists flocking in from the southern coast. Prices are at their peak during that time. Winter (December-February) can become bitingly cold with temperatures dropping down to -6°C/21°F.

We went in early November and it was already starting to get pretty cold, so I can only imagine what it must be like in January or February. If you don’t mind cold weather though, then winter may be an interesting time to go. I saw pictures and Cappadocia looks stunning blanketed in snow.

MAR-MAY: This is the ideal time to visit Cappadocia for the reasons outlined above. The weather is ideal and the crowds aren’t as heavy as they are during the summer peak season.

JUNE-AUG: This is the busiest time of the year in Cappadocia so pricing for accommodations and activities may be at their highest.

SEPT-NOV: Like Spring, Autumn is a great time to visit Cappadocia. The weather is similar and crowds are thinner. We we there in November and it was already getting pretty cold, so September or October may be better.

DEC-FEB: This is the coldest and slowest time of the year in Cappadocia. Winters can be frigid but if you can brave it, then it’s a beautiful time of the year to go. Accommodations and activities may also be cheapest around this time.

TRAVELING TO CAPPADOCIA

There are many ways to get to Cappadocia depending on where you are. To simplify, let’s assume you’ll be coming from the major tourist destinations of Istanbul, Selçuk, or Pamukkale , and interested only in direct flights or bus routes.

If you’re coming from somewhere else, then you can check Bookaway to find route options available to you.

From Istanbul

It takes about 1 hr and 15 mins to fly to Cappadocia from Istanbul. Cappadocia has two airports — Nevsehir Kapadokya (NAV) and Kayseri Erkilet (ASR).

There are direct flights daily from Istanbul – Istanbul (IST) or Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) – to either airport. Nevsehir is closer to the main towns of Göreme and Urgup but Kayseri is the larger airport.

If you’ve already booked a hotel, then you may want to ask them if they offer airport transfers. If not, then you can book a private transfer through Get Your Guide .

We haven’t used them so we can’t vouch for them, but there are a few tour agencies that offer shared shuttle bus transfers from either airport as well like Argeus and Heritage .

Several companies run nightly buses from Istanbul to Cappadocia, including Metro Turizm and Nevşehir Seyahat. This is the cheapest way to go but it’s also the longest, around 10 hours so it’s best done as an overnight trip.

With that said, Turkish long-haul buses are among the most comfortable we’ve ever been on. We went on a 10-hr bus ride from Pamukkale to Cappadocia and we didn’t mind the distance at all.

From Selçuk

There are direct flights from Izmir to Kayseri but none to Nevsehir. You can prearrange for a shared shuttle bus transfer from Kasyeri to your hotel through the aforementioned tour agencies, or you can book a private transfer with Get Your Guide .

As far as I know, only the Kamil Koç company offers direct bus routes to Nevsehir from Izmir. The trip takes about 12 hrs 30 mins.

From Pamukkale

As far as I know, there are no direct flights that will take you from Denizli to Cappadocia. You’ll need to fly to Istanbul first so it’s best you go by overnight bus.

This is what we did. From Pamukkale, you can take a minibus to Denizli’s otogar (bus station) then take a long-haul bus from there to Cappadocia.

As advised, a direct bus ride from Denizli to Cappadocia takes about 10 hours so it’s best done as an overnight trip. Several bus lines service the Denizli-Cappadocia route, like Suha Turizm, Metro Turizm , Kamil Koç , Nevsehir Seyahat, and Öz Elbistan .

You can purchase your tickets online or at the station itself. If you’ll be traveling during peak season, then I suggest reserving your tickets beforehand.

WHERE TO EXCHANGE CURRENCY

The unit of currency in Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TL) .

Based on my research, the only true currency exchange offices in Cappadocia are in Nevşehir. There are none in the popular tourist towns of Göreme, Ürgüp, or Uçhisar.

The only bank outside of Nevşehir is Denizbank in Göreme. Other than that, I’ve read that jewelry shops can exchange your currency as well though you’ll need to be familiar with the day’s exchange rate.

If you’d rather not carry too much foreign currency with you, then a better alternative might be to withdraw TL from an ATM. The rates are competitive.

Be sure to let your bank know that you intend to use your ATM card abroad, as it may need to be activated for overseas use. That’s what I do before every trip. In my experience, my ATM card works in some machines but not in others.

NOTE: Some ATM machines may give you the option of proceeding “with or without conversion”. Always choose WITHOUT conversion because proceeding with conversion allows the foreign bank operating the ATM to do the conversion for you, usually at highly unfavorable exchange rates .

BEST AREAS TO STAY IN CAPPADOCIA

The Cappadocia region is comprised of multiple cities and towns, though the majority of travelers stay in Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Ortahisar, and Avanos. So far, we’ve only stayed in Göreme, but I’ll write a brief description of the other areas so you have a basic idea of what to expect.

I’ve created the color-coded map below to help you understand where all these recommended areas are. Click on the link for a live version of the map. (Please note that marked areas are approximations only)

RED – Göreme BLUE – Ürgüp PURPLE – Uçhisar ORANGE – Ortahisar GREEN – Avanos

Göreme is considered the hub for tourism in Cappadocia . There you’ll find Cappadocia’s main bus station as well as numerous restaurants, travel agencies, and hotels of varying price ranges to suit every budget.

If it’s your first time in Cappadocia, then Göreme is definitely the most convenient place to stay . It’s also walking distance to Göreme Open Air Museum which is the most visited attraction in Cappadocia.

We stayed at a quaint B&B called Natureland Cave Hotel. In my opinion, cave rooms are quintessential to the Cappadocia experience so if it’s your first time here, then staying in one is a must. Check out these top-rated hotels in Göreme:

Ürgüp is similar to Göreme in terms of accommodations and services, plus it’s considered the region’s heart of wine production so it’s a great place for dining out.

From what I understand, it’s a slightly more upmarket version of Göreme with nicer hotels and better restaurants, so people looking for more sophisticated options may want to stay here. Check out these top-rated hotels in Ürgüp:

Uçhisar is known for its rock castle which is the highest viewing point in Central Cappadocia. The area offers the best views of Cappadocia and is home to many luxury hotels, inns, and rental villas .

It’s a quiet area with a good albeit smaller selection of restaurants. If you’re a luxury traveler, then this is probably where you’ll want to stay. Check out these top-rated hotels in Uçhisar.

Ortahisar is a sleepy town that hasn’t been as commercialized as the previous three areas. There aren’t as many restaurants or hotels here so that may appeal to travelers looking for the most authentic Cappadocia experience .

If you enjoy hiking, I read that there are plenty of good hikes you can do from town. Public transportation isn’t as accessible here so it’s probably best to stay in Ortahisar only if you have a rental car . Check out these top-rated hotels in Ortahisar:

Avanos is a town that sits by the banks of the Red River. The Red River is the source of the clay used to produce the town’s famous pottery. There are no fairy chimneys or cave hotels in Avanos but if you’re a fan of pottery , then you may want to stay here.

There are plenty of shops and restaurants in Avanos. It’s best to have a rental car , but if you don’t have one, then there are buses from Avanos that can take you to Göreme every hour and to Ürgüp every two hours. Check out these top-rated hotels in Avanos:

THINGS TO DO IN CAPPADOCIA

1. ride a hot air balloon.

Without a doubt, riding a hot air balloon over this alien landscape is the most epic thing you can do in Cappadocia. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and there are few better places in the world to do it than here.

It isn’t cheap but sometimes you just need to forget about the money. This is one of those times. Check out my post on riding a hot air balloon over Cappadocia for more pictures and information.

2. Visit Cappadocia’s Highlights on the Red Tour

In my opinion, the Red Tour is one of the best things you can do in Cappadocia outside of the hot air balloon ride. It’s a great introduction to the area and takes you to the most striking spots in northern Cappadocia. If you were to do just one tour (other than the hot air balloon), then I suggest doing this one.

3. Discover Cappadocia on the Green Tour

Arguably the second most popular tour in Cappadocua after the Red, the Green Tour will take you to a slew of interesting sites in southern Cappadocia.

Highlights include an underground city that goes 300 ft below the surface of the earth and a picturesque hike through a valley honeycombed with rock-cut dwellings and churches.

Göreme Panorama: Area offering fantastic panoramic views of the landscape. Derinkuyu Underground City: Ancient multi-level underground city. 4. Explore Cappadocia’s Moonscape on Horseback

Cappadocia in Turkish means “land of the beautiful horses”, so what better way to explore this alien landscape than on horseback?

TURKISH FOOD GUIDE

Turkish food is awesome. It’s one of our favorite cuisines so far because of its diversity. Everywhere we went, it seemed there was something interesting and unique to discover. For suggestions on what to eat, check out my post on the most delicious things to eat and drink in Turkey .

WHERE TO EAT IN GOREME

1. nazar börek cafe.

A TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence awardee, Nazar Börek Cafe is a gem of a restaurant that serves traditional Turkish dishes like börek, gözleme, and böregi. Börek, from which the restaurant gets its name, refers to a family of filled filo (or yufka) pastries popular in Ottoman cuisine.

Pictured below is the potato börek. It had a soft moist texture reminiscent of Spanish tortilla de patata, but in pastry form. It was delicious and one of my favorite things to eat in Turkey.

Nazar Börek is located along Müze Cad, not too far from Cappadocia Voyager Balloons.

2. Omurca Art Cave Cafe

Another TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence awardee, Omurca Art Cave Cafe is a charming little place that’s owned by artist and craftsman Harun. Not only did Harun decorate the place and build all the furniture himself, but he cooks all the food as well.

Omurca Art Cave Cafe is a great place to just kick back and relax while enjoying a home-cooked meal with glasses of house-made wine. Pictured below is a plate of güvec, which is a type of casserole made with pepper, onion, garlic, tomato, aubergine, potato, and spices. Yum!

Omurca Art Cave Cafe is set in the heart of Göreme’s maze of alleys and fairy chimneys so it can be a little hard to locate. You can refer to the map below to help you find it.

3. Coffeedocia

Coffeedocia is a great place to have breakfast, especially if you’re arriving in Göreme by overnight bus. Located just off the otogar (bus station), we randomly walked into this place with our luggage in tow when it was still too early to check in at our hotel.

Breakfast was wonderful and the Segafredo coffee was good. They have a full menu as well with a wide selection of desserts.

As described, Coffeedocia is right next to Göreme’s otogar. It’s an ideal place to enjoy a meal if you’re coming or going by bus.

POINTS OF INTEREST IN CAPPADOCIA

HOW TO GET AROUND IN CAPPADOCIA

Personally, I prefer exploring on our own so we try not to go on guided tours. But in Cappadocia, I felt it was necessary. Attractions are spread out over large distances so unless you have a rental car, it’s tough to go from one place to the next.

Derinkuyu underground city and Ihlara Valley, for example, are over an hour away from Göreme. Public transportation in the form of minibuses does exist between towns, but not all attractions are within the towns themselves. On top of that, you’ll need to wait around for the minibuses which only adds to the travel time.

For these reasons, I suggest going on guided tours . The Red and Green Tours will take you to all the major spots in Cappadocia. Entrance fees are already included, as is lunch, and you don’t have to worry about missing any attractions. We booked our tours with Bridge of the World and I found their prices to be reasonable.

If there are enough people in your group to split the cost, then a good alternative would be to rent a car. Many travelers do.

Most rental cars in Turkey have M/T so expect to pay a lot more for A/T. I can’t drive stick so this wasn’t feasible for us, plus I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of having to seek out places on our own and potentially getting lost.

But if you’re comfortable with the prospect of driving, then this would be a good option. It will give you the most freedom. You can rent a car in Cappadocia through Rentalcars.com .

HOW MANY DAYS TO STAY / CAPPADOCIA ITINERARY

A minimum of two full days, no less. If you do both the Red and Green Tours, then you’ll see pretty much all the major sights in Cappadocia. Each tour takes a full day which is why I’m suggesting a stay of no less than two.

If you plan on taking a hot air balloon ride, then you can do it on either of those days. It starts bright and early at around 5:30AM, and they’ll have you back at your hotel in time for your tours.

If I were you, I’d throw in an extra day just to take it easy and do some exploring on your own. Cappadocia is captivating and one of the most interesting landscapes I’ve ever seen. It’s fun to just walk around and soak in the atmosphere.

Maybe you can go horseback riding, cruise around on ATVs, or do some independent hiking. It’s a magical place so you’re bound to enjoy every minute of your stay there.

CAPPADOCIA TRAVEL TIPS

1. plan your trip with sygic travel.

2. Rent a Pocket Wifi Device

Having a steady wifi connection is so important these days, especially when traveling. You’ll need it to navigate, do research, and learn how to say “take me to your best kebab” in Turkish. We never go anywhere now without renting a pocket wifi device first. Click on the link to rent a pocket wifi device through Get Your Guide (Istanbul pick-up).

3. Try Pottery Kebab at a Restaurant that Requires Advanced Booking

Testi or pottery kebab is a casserole-type dish that’s prepared in a clay pot or jug. It’s an Anatolian specialty and a must-try in Cappadocia.

For the best experience, go to a restaurant that requires advanced booking. Pottery kebab takes hours to prepare so a good restaurant will require you to make a reservation at least three hours in advance. You can ask your hotel for recommendations.

If a restaurant offers pottery kebab on the spot, then it’s highly likely that they pre-make batches earlier in the day and just reheat them when you order. That’s what happened to us so I’m not recommending that restaurant.

4. Rent a Car

As described, attractions in Cappadocia are spread out and not as easily accessible by public transportation, so if you’d like the freedom to explore, then it’s best to rent a car. You can do so through Rentalcars.com .

5. Check for Cappadocia Travel Vouchers

I always go through e-commerce travel platforms before a trip because you never know what interesting deals you might find. For this trip to Turkey, the best site was Get Your Guide because they had the biggest selection.

If you’re looking for deals on pocket wifi rental, tours, transfers, etc., then you may want to search through the Get Your Guide website for a list of attractions deals in Cappadocia.

6. Get Travel Insurance

For us, whether or not to get travel insurance depends a lot on where we’re going, how long we’re staying, and what we’ll be doing. If all we’re doing is eating sushi in Japan for a few days, then we may not get it. But if we plan on doing physical things, like horseback riding in Cappadocia, then we’ll definitely purchase a policy.

We get travel insurance from SafetyWing or Heymondo. They’re travel insurance providers often used by many digital nomads. Follow the links to get a free quote from SafetyWing or Heymondo . Will Fly for Food readers get 5% off on Heymondo when using our link.

7. Know When and How Much to Tip

Tipping is accepted in Turkey. For cheaper restaurants, a 5-10% tip is good. For pricier restaurants, make it 10-15%. You can give EUR 1 per bag to porters and bellhops.

If you go on any tours, then a group tip of around EUR 10-15 will be appreciated. Keep in mind that this is from the whole tour group. For taxi rides, you can just round up the fare to a convenient amount – ie TL 23.10 to TL 24.

8. Bring the Right Power Adapter

Electrical outlets in Turkey are round so plugs are typically Type C or Type F. Be sure to bring the right power adapters for your devices. Electrical voltage is 230V.

This is so well done. Excellent comprehensive information! Thank you SO much. We are going to Cappadocia in Oct. 2021 after a cruise and this has helped me so much. Like, having a travel visa, I wasn't aware was needed. Can you imagine we go to the airport in Istanbul and they're like, "travel visa please?" 8 of the best places to visit in Cappadocia

Cappadocia is one of Türkyie's most popular destinations for a good reason – its stunning scenery is quite unlike anywhere else.

When this is coupled with a rich cultural heritage full of ancient historical sights and warm, welcoming people, it's easy to see why it becomes a must-visit on everyone's Türkyie  itinerary.

Don't feel overwhelmed by all the options – we've rounded up the eight most spectacular places to visit in Cappadocia , so all you have to do is book those tickets and go.

Best place for fairy chimneys

One of the top draws for tourists visiting Cappadocia is its iconic fairy chimneys – stacks of soft tuff rock formed by volcanic upheavals and then weathered into otherworldly shapes over millennia. They can be found across Cappadocia, but the central town of Göreme has perhaps the best concentration in its surrounding valleys.

Take a hike through Red or Güllüdere (Rose) Valley in the late afternoon to admire the fairy chimneys as they turn fiery red in the evening light, or wander through Love Valley where the chimneys have formed into particularly suggestive shapes.

Göreme is also an essential stop for history lovers – in the Byzantine era, many of the fairy chimneys were hollowed out and used as monasteries. The monks decorated the interior caves with brilliant frescoes, many of which have survived to the present day and are now preserved in the must-see Göreme Open-Air Museum .

Planning tip: The valleys around Göreme are particularly suited for one-way hikes. If you have a car, save yourself doing them as out-and-back trips by parking at the endpoint and taking a taxi to the trailhead.

Best place for Seljuk heritage

Many travelers skip Kayseri in their haste to reach Cappadocia’s iconic attractions, but this large and bustling city is well worth a day or two’s exploration. It’s one of the best places in the country to check out the elegant architecture left behind by the Seljuks, who ruled much of Türkyie in the thirteenth century.

The black-stone castle in the city center is of Seljuk construction, though it’s been extensively restored and looks a little over-pristine. Across the road, however, is the Mahperi Hunat Hatun Complex , a mosque and madrassah which are perfectly preserved. Check out the intricate carving around the portal of the mosque, and enjoy a glass of çay in the madrassah’s atmospheric courtyard. While in town, you can also get an insight into life in the Ottoman period at the outstanding ethnographic museum in the fifteenth century Güpgüpoğlu House.

Planning tip: Allow yourself an afternoon to take in Kayseri’s various sights. Start at the Museum of Seljuk Civilisation in Mimar Sinan Parkı and work your way south to take in all the city’s big hitters.

Best place for historic valleys

The busy city of Aksaray, in Cappadocia’s west, is of relatively limited interest to travelers but it’s a pleasant place to base yourself for visits to some of the region’s cultural highlights – the valleys of Ihlara and Güzelyurt (also known as Monastery Valley). Both these wide canyons make lovely scenic walks, and the cliffs on either side are lined with Byzantine cave churches which are ripe for exploring.

The Ihlara Valley is an especially impressive and popular route, offering a well-defined path that follows a gushing river along the canyon floor, past cave churches containing some of the best frescoes found in Cappadocia. The Yılanlı Kilise (Snake Church) is a characterful highlight, its lively images depicting four snakes biting people as punishment for various sins.

Güzelyurt Valley, meanwhile, is a quieter walk. Its churches are perhaps a little less dramatic but it gets fewer visitors and is a lovely peaceful route through gorgeous surroundings.

Detour: Make a quick stop at Aksaray Museum , where you can see a collection of 1000-year-old mummies that were discovered in the Ihlara Valley.

Best place for quirky museums

The small town of Avanos, 8km (5 miles) north of Göreme, makes a refreshing change of pace if you’ve seen plenty of fairy chimneys and Byzantine churches; here, the attractions are pleasingly offbeat. Start with a visit to the Güray Müze , an underground art gallery that displays beautiful pieces from contemporary Turkish artists, and also boasts quite an astounding array of ceramics in its attached shop.

Then head over the river to the truly one-of-a-kind Chez Galip Hair Museum , which is exactly what it sounds like – a collection of locks of hair, attached to the walls and hanging from the ceiling, all donated by female visitors to the museum. There’s nowhere else quite like it.

5. Kaymaklı

Best place to wander underground

The Byzantines might have burrowed into Cappadocia’s soft rock to produce churches, but the inhabitants of Kaymakl ı went one better – digging deep into the ground, they developed a huge network of caves and passageways now known as Kaymaklı underground city .

Visiting this subterranean labyrinth is a unique experience. It’s fascinating to imagine how people lived in this hugely complex site which contains all the essentials for daily life, including bread ovens, wine presses, horse stables, and vast shafts to ensure clean air circulation.

There are several such underground cities in Cappadocia – nearby Derinkuyu is bigger, but Kaymaklı is more fun to explore as its passages encourage random wandering, and smaller visitor numbers make it feel less claustrophobic.

6. Aladağlar National Park

Best place for multi-day treks

Down in Cappadocia’s south is the beautiful and rarely visited Aladağlar National Park, which is one of Türkiye’s most unspoiled trekking destinations. From the village of Çukurbağ, you can take paths through craggy limestone gullies leading you up onto alpine plateaus and eventually to the gorgeous Yedigöller lakes. The routes are lengthy and there are few that can be tackled as a day hike, but if you enjoy multi-day treks and camping amidst stunning mountain scenery, Aladağlar National Park is a great destination.

Detour: While in the area, check out the nearby Eski Gümüşler Monastery , which is one of Cappadocia’s most overlooked highlights. A cave monastery dating back to the Byzantine period, the frescoes at Gümüşler are some of the best in Cappadocia, including a stunningly well-preserved Nativity scene and a rare image of a smiling Virgin Mary.

Best place for local wine

The volcanic soil of Cappadocia is ideal for grape growing, and for many centuries this part of Türkiye was a major wine production region. The industry took a downturn in the early twentieth century but it’s expanding again with the town of Ürgüp leading the way.

Take a tour of the friendly Turasan company’s factory and sample their excellent vintages, or stop by in September when the town hosts the Cappadocia Vineyard Festival. Alternatively, you could just relax in one of the town’s many wine bars and enjoy a glass or two.

Detour: While in town, make sure to take a look at the rock formation known as the Three Beauties . It’s an iconic Ürgüp landmark that's featured on many Turasan wine bottle labels.

8. Erciyes Dağı

Best place for winter sports

Cappadocia probably doesn’t spring immediately to mind if winter sports are mentioned, but there’s an excellent ski resort at the mountain of Erciyes Dağı, a short distance south of Kayseri. It’s one of the highest mountains in Türkiye and is a very popular destination for skiers, with ski lifts, equipment available to rent, and plenty of runs for all abilities. Outside the winter months, the mountain offers good trekking opportunities, so you don’t need to limit yourself to the winter season.

There is a lot of transport choice when it comes to getting from Istanbul to Cappadocia . Your decision will depend on how much time you've allocated for your trip and the style of travel you prefer.

1. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Airplane

For travelers on a short trip, flying direct to Cappadocia from Istanbul is a popular option.

Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines offer regular flights to Cappadocia's two airports throughout the day and night. The flight time is 80 minutes.

Turkish Airlines offer the most options for Cappadocia-bound flights. Six services daily head to Kayseri Airport from either Istanbul International Airport or Sabiha Gökçen Airport, and one service at least departs daily from Istanbul International Airport for Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport.

Pegasus Airlines flights to Cappadocia all depart from Sabiha Gökçen and arrive at Kayseri Airport.

Although your choice of flight will probably depend more on the most suitable departure time for you, it's worth knowing the differences between Cappadocia's two airports.

Kayseri Erkilet Airport is in the city of Kayseri, approximately 80 kilometers east from the villages that are at the center of Cappadocia's tourism industry.

Much smaller Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is just north of the town of Gülşehir, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of the villages.

Pre-booked airport shuttle services offer door-to-door transport from both airports to the hotels in the Cappadocia villages. Journey time from Kayseri Airport, depending both on the waiting time for all passengers booked on the shuttle to exit the airport and on which village you're staying in, can take up to two hours. From Nevşehir Airport, the shuttle bus services rarely take longer than 30 minutes door to door.

Seats on these privately run airport shuttles must be booked in advance. These transfers are normally organized by your hotel.

2. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Bus

A few different bus companies offer direct transport from Istanbul's main Esenler Otogar (bus station) and Istanbul's other bus station, Alibeykoy Otogar to Nevşehir Otogar on the outskirts of Nevşehir city, approximately 18 kilometers west from the Cappadocia villages (depending on which village you're staying in). Some bus companies also provide direct drop-off to Göreme and Avanos. If you're staying in either of these towns, choose a bus offering direct drop-off so you don't have to wait for another bus in Nevşehir.

The major companies plying this route are Nevşehir Seyahat , Kamil Koç (which is owned by the European Flixbus company so uses both names) and Metro . The journey time takes between 11 and 12 hours.

Most departure options leave during the evening, depositing you at Nevşehir bus station the next morning. There are a couple of day-bus services though, which are great for travelers who enjoy watching the scenery pass by.

There is very little ticket price difference between the companies who work this route, so your decision on which service to use will mostly be made on departure time.

All the buses are fitted with comfortable, airline-style seating, which includes individual entertainment systems and charging points for your phone, and an on-board conductor service, which offers complimentary hot and cold drinks and a snack.

There are direct minibus services to the Cappadocian tourism centers of Göreme, Ürgüp, and Avanos from Nevşehir Otogar (bus station).

3. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Tour

Those short on time on their Turkey trip may want to opt for a prearranged Cappadocia side-trip tour from Istanbul.

This is a hassle-free option, where all transport, transfers, activities, and accommodation are organized for you, so you can just sit back and enjoy your Cappadocia visit.

Be aware that the shortest Cappadocia side-trip tours from Istanbul are two days, not one-day tours. With tourist attractions here spread throughout the region, you need at least 48 hours for a snapshot trip.

The in-location overnight stay also allows you to participate in the region's famous hot-air ballooning activity , which takes place at dawn. Cappadocia tours from Istanbul typically do not include this in their price but offer it as an optional extra, which they can book for you.

For a small group tour with passenger numbers capped at 15, the 2 Days, 1 Night Cappadocia Tour offers an itinerary that covers a number of Cappadocia's natural and historical attractions on a short trip.

The tour includes return flights from Istanbul with door-to-door airport transfers for both flights and two regional tours with a professional guide while in Cappadocia. These include a short hike in Rose Valley and entrance fees to Göreme Open-Air Museum and Kaymakli Underground City, an overnight stay in a cave-hotel, and two lunches and breakfasts. Hot air ballooning can be booked while reserving your place on the tour but isn't included in the tour price.

A very similar private tour version is the 2 Days Cappadocia Tour from Istanbul . This tour includes return flights from Istanbul, direct airport transfers for both flights, a one-night stay in a cave-hotel in Göreme, and two guided tours of some of Cappadocia's highlights. These guided tours include visits to Derinkuyu Underground City and Göreme Open-Air Museum, two lunches and two breakfasts. Hot air ballooning can be organized by the tour company but is an extra non-included activity in the tour price.

Note that these snapshot-style tours are quite rushed due to limited time so won't suit some travelers. You will be heading out on a tour directly after your airport transfer into Cappadocia and you'll need to be packed and ready to go on day two in the morning as you'll be directly transferred to the airport after your day two tour finishes.

Note that arranging a Cappadocia tour through an Istanbul travel agency costs more than organizing a similar tour through a local Cappadocia travel agency and – due to not being so limited by time constraints – tours arranged in Cappadocia can include sights and tourist attractions that are farther out in the region, such as Ilhara Valley.

4. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Train & Bus

The high-speed train line between Istanbul, Ankara, and Konya means, if you have a bit more time to spend on the journey to Cappadocia, you can add in stops at two of central Anatolia's most important cities into your trip.

With a leisurely pace, you could fit in both cities along the route, or choose one as an overnight stop.

Ankara , Turkey's capital, is home to the important Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the Anıtkabir , the mausoleum of Atatürk (the founder of the modern republic of Turkey).

Konya is filled with restored Seljuk-era mosques and monuments, and is the home of the whirling dervishes and the Mevlana Museum , one of Turkey's major pilgrimage sites.

There are eight high-speed train services, taking four and a half hours, from Istanbul to Ankara daily.

To Konya direct from Istanbul, there are three services, with a journey time of four hours and 15 minutes.

If you're planning to stop in both cities, there are high-speed train departures seven times daily from Ankara to Konya, taking just under two hours for the trip.

Train tickets should be purchased in advance, as seats do sell out.

From both Ankara Otogar (bus station) and Konya Otogar there are bus services to Nevşehir Otogar, the main transport hub of the Cappadocia region.

5. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Car

Hiring a car to drive across the Anatolian countryside from Istanbul to Cappadocia means you have the freedom to explore some of the major historic highlights of the region along the way.

Although you could also visit most of these destinations by public transport, the journey would be much less straightforward and would take longer to achieve.

Three of the best stops if journeying by car on this route would be the preserved Ottoman village of Safranbolu (410 kilometers east from Istanbul); the Phrygian ruins of Gordion (468 kilometers southeast from Istanbul or 272 kilometers south from Safranbolu); and the Hittite ruins of Hattuşa, which sit in the village of Boğazkale (307 kilometers southeast from Safranbolu or 305 kilometers east from Gordion).

From Hattuşa, it's a further 196 kilometers drive south to the village of Göreme, the heart of Cappadocia's tourism industry.

Safranbolu and Boğazkale both have accommodation for overnight stops along the way. There are also plenty of other tourist attractions and historic sites in the hinterland surrounding both these destinations, so it's well worth allowing yourself a few days for your entire journey.

Sights along the way:

To make the most of having your own wheels, as you come into the Cappadocia region, stop off at some of the area's lesser-seen sights along the way.

Hacıbektaş, 57 kilometers northwest from Göreme, is a pilgrimage town for the Bektaşı order (a mystical offshoot of Islam) and is home to the Hacıbektaş Veli Museum within a restored dervish lodge.

From here, head 28 kilometers south to the Church of St Jean on the outskirts of the small town of Gülşehir. Inside this hollowed out rock-cone you'll find some of Cappadocia's best restored and finely detailed mid-Byzantine frescoes (dated from the 13th century) yet, because it's off the main tourist route, it only receives a handful of visitors.

Another two-kilometer hop west down the main highway, and you arrive at the Byzantine monastery complex of Açık Saray , with its refectory building and churches carved out of the rock and thought to date back to around the 7th century. From here it's only a short 23-kilometer drive southeast, onward to Göreme.

Driving in Turkey is relatively straightforward thanks to main highways being in excellent condition and good signage for towns, tourist attractions , and historic sites. Note that gas is expensive in Turkey though, so self-drive trips will always work out more expensive than other transport options.
