The 22 Best Instagram Travel Accounts To Inspire You

Instagram is simple, it’s visual and it creates a quick emotional impact! It’s also a great way to discover new places around the world. No wonder I’m always seeking the best Instagram travel accounts to follow!

Even though I despise the direction Instagram is going, with self-proclaimed influencers spreading like wildfire ( beautypreneurs is a thing now…) I confess I do spend a significant amount of time there .

Sometimes double tapping cat videos. Sometimes stalking my friends. But I’m especially interested in new travel inspiration. And now I’m sharing them with you (the travel content, not the cats).

For this list, I tried to avoid hollow influencers who only use travel as a way of getting new backdrops for their own photos. The world needs valuable content, interesting things to learn and see and especially people who truly love to travel.

With no particular order, these are my favorite Instagram travel bloggers to feed your wanderlust (list updated May 2019). They are travel bloggers, Youtube stars, journalists or simple amateurs sharing real, honest, and interesting content.

Paulo’s was one of the first accounts I followed in Instagram. He’s a Brazilian travel photographer, but mostly a storyteller. His amazing photos in the most varied landscapes inspired me to follow my own wanderlust dream.

On my last night in Mandalay, I had just left the Sandamuni Pagoda when I came across these young Buddhist nuns draped in pink. Mark Wiens travels with a purpose: to eat food. Sounds like a great life purpose to me. Based in Bangkok , he combines his travels with indulging in the local foods and ingredients. The result is a colorful and yummy Instagram feed: a delight for foodies.

Kiersten Rich is another example of a well-succeeded corporate woman who left everything for travel. And she really means it: she’s already got more than 40 countries ticked off her bucket list.

Another heavy weights of the travel blogosphere. Dave and Deb have travelled to more than 100 countries in all 7 continents and Planet D is an authentic bible of the best travel advice and tips all around the world.

Their Instagram account is filled with incredible pictures taken in a huge variety of places. This one in Canada is one of my favorites.

I love everything about this profile. The concept, the name, the composition of the photos, and specially the tagline Eating my way around the world .

Originally from Hong Kong , Melissa Hie started this project because she felt awkward asking strangers to take pictures of her. So she started taking food selfies! On her Instagram you can find a bag of dutch fries in Amsterdam a corn bread in Indonesia , or this koulouri in Greece . I’m hooked!

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, it is not the best time to start planning an exciting holiday since no one knows exactly what the future holds. Yet, many of us are looking for a brief escape from a new reality aflood with coronavirus stories. So there’s no better time to dream a little by looking at insanely stunning travel photos that bring beautiful destinations to the forefront. Over the past few years, bloggers and influencers have boomed in popularity, yet only few succeed in truly inspiring others. Here are my 10 favorite Instagram travel bloggers who you can follow as well to feed your own wanderlust. And of course, you can always follow my own Instagram account at @LuxuryTravelExpert .

Another iconic name in travel, the Travel Channel’s Instagram account lives up to its reputation by truly inspiring people to travel through gorgeous images.

This is probably the best hotel Instagram account around. Four Seasons does an amazing job of taking you outside of the resort and into the one-of-a-kind locations where they operate.

When you ache for authentic, off-the-beaten-track travel. I still remember backpacking with my best friend in college and always having our doggy-eared Lonely Planet nearby. That book was our everything. Lonely Planet’s Instagram is chock-full of the same high-quality travel inspiration.

13. New York Times Travel:  @nytimestravel

The New York Times has multiple Instagram accounts for the different niches and topics that they cover. Their riveting travel photos actually make me want to head to their website to read more about the stories behind them.

Just a few years ago, he worked as a carpet cleaner before he sold all his possessions and bought a one-way ticket to Thailand. From there, he began to run promotional pages for businesses. They took off and quickly began accumulating a large following. Jack decided to put that same effort into something he was passionate about. From there, Do You Travel was born. It just happened in the right place at the right time.

Italy is pure magic. It’s no question why it’s the world’s most popular tourist destination. Italy is so perfect that it doesn’t even feel real. Walking in Venice feels like you’re walking in a dream. Boating in Lake Como feels like you’ve swapped lives with George Clooney. Jumping off the rocks of the Amalfi Coast feels like you’re diving head first into the best day of your life. Listening to accordions play “that’s amore” feels like you’re starring in an old Hollywood romance. Walking the streets of the Vatican feels like you’re living in a Renaissance painting. And drinking wine in Tuscany feels a little like falling in love.

Favourite travel memory: I loved hitchhiking along the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan. The landscape is stunning, and the people there were just so kind. One of the days my friends and I caught a ride with a truck driver who drove us for about 10 hours, stopping in each village we drove through to pick up local delicacies like pears and bags of boiled meat for us to try.

Favourite destination: It’s so hard to choose! I’ve fallen in love with most every country I’ve travelled through, but I guess Norway will always hold the top spot in my heart, as this is the place I’ve chosen to call my home. But I also really love Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, and Siberia.

Favourite travel memory: Cruising the Californian coast in our vintage Kombi Van. We were on the road for 6 weeks, met the most amazing people & experienced scenery that blew us away like Joshua tree National Park, Big Sur, Yosemite & the surf coast of San Diego! We still laugh about our time spent in our trusty van, sleeping out the front of peoples mansions in Malibu, mechanical breakdowns in the desert & no showers for a week. Favourite travel memory: I’ve been very fortunate to have made some incredible memories over 11 years of travelling, but one of my favourites is also one of my most recent. Although I travel solo most of the time, I recently travelled around East Africa with my mother for six weeks. Visiting that part of the world had been my number one travel dream since I was a little girl, and we were lucky enough to see lions, cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, leopards, and more. I’ll never forget how to felt to be surrounded by a hundred elephants as they grazed in Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park, especially with my mum by my side. It was one of the most special moments of my life so far.

Favourite destination : Picking one favourite destination is always going to be a difficult task, but the fact that I keep wanting to go back to Italy must mean something. I’ve been about a dozen times now and I never seem to run out of places I want to go, things I want to do, and food I want to eat! I love how geographically diverse the country is – from mountains to cities to the sea – as well as how deep-rooted the history and culture are. Not only that, I’ve always had an amazing time with the people I meet while there. And really, any country where it’s acceptable (or maybe expected) for me to eat pasta and drink wine all day is always going to come out on top.

Favourite travel memory: One of my favourite travel memories was when I surprised my parents by popping up in California. They had been in the US on a road trip for two weeks, and were going to California to meet family who lives there. What they didn’t know is that I booked a flight, got on a train, traveled for over 24 hours, and was waiting behind the wall in the kitchen to surprise them when they showed up. I still smile when I think about the look on my dads face when I tapped on his shoulder and he turned around.

Favourite destination: London! I was lucky enough to live there for seven months and I just keep going back. I’ll take any excuse! It’s the place in the world where I feel most at home. London has anything you could ever want, whether you are in the mood for a party, some great food or a visit to some world class museums… it’s all there. And the vibe is just so vibrant and accepting that it was very easy for me to blend right in. I’m really hoping I’ll have another stint there in the future.

Favourite travel memory: It’s hard to pinpoint, as it changes with each destination! But a recent fave was when I was walking through Longyearbyen (in Svalbard, Arctic Norway) last summer. It was past midnight but the sun was still shining bright: I was walking down the centre of the empty main road, keeping a vague eye out for rogue polar bears, and suddenly couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be in such an inaccessible and surreal place. That feeling of happiness and ‘right’ness is definitely a memory to hold onto.

Favourite destination: Has to be Colombia. It’s such a beautiful and diverse country, but the best part for me is how generous and friendly the people are – after my first visit I made such immediate close friendships with Colombians that I ended up returning at least three times over the course of the next year!

Favourite travel memory: Would take me back to the first solo trip I did to Thailand back in 2014 when I was 19. I had just arrived in Bangkok after a long flight full of turbulence and was planning on catching a train straight to Chiang Mai. After getting to the Bangkok train station at 11pm, I was told that there were no tickets left for the next train, leaving me stuck by myself, completely clueless in the middle of the night in a foreign place. I made the decision to catch a taxi into Bangkok city, where I spent the next hour walking around the streets with my backpack trying to find a spare bed. At 1am, I found a hostel, where I spent that night in complete awe of what had just happened. Although it was one of the scariest memories I’ve had travelling, it was the moment that I realised just how capable I am of achieving things on my own, and that feeling is something that cannot be beaten.

Favourite destination: Slovenia captured all of my senses and definitely filled a gap in my heart. From the exquisite scenery to the friendly faces, there wasn’t a time spent in Slovenia where I was looking for more or was unsatisfied with my decisions. I also loved that there was a lack of tourists, especially when compared to the surrounding Mediterranean countries.

Favourite travel memory: In August 2015, I quit a career in marketing, sold everything I owned, and left Texas on a one way flight to Spain. One month later, I was volunteering at a vineyard in Tuscany, staying in a villa, eating real Italian food and drinking Italian wine from the vineyard. The experience of working with my hands and stepping into a new role, if only for 2 weeks was an incredible and life changing experience.

Favourite destination: Picking a favourite destination is impossible, but I loved the 7 months I spent in New Zealand bungy jumping, helihiking, swimming with dolphins and enjoying the gorgeous scenery!

My favourite travel memory: My favourite travel memory? It’s hard to pick only one after 7.5 years of full-time travel but one trip that stands out is my trip to Cuba earlier this year. The country is fascinating, some of the towns feel like they’re stuck in a time warp, and while it was initially frustrating not to have internet access because of how limited it is by the government, in the end I embraced the involuntary digital detox, because it allowed me to be more present during the trip, to take it all in, instead of wasting time on Facebook or trying to get the perfect Instagram shot. What I loved about Cuba was how friendly the people were, how colourful the towns were, how life takes place in the streets instead of behind closed doors and windows, and the simplicity of life there. The beaches were divine and the scenery was spectacular – I highly recommend visiting Cuba.

Favourite destination: I always say that I have several favourite destinations – which include Italy, Guatemala and Cambodia – but the one country I keep going back to is Mexico, so I guess that’s my No 1 destination! I love the pristine beaches on the Caribbean coast, the Spanish-colonial towns, the diverse landscapes which range from desert in the north to jungles in the south, with plenty of mountains and volcanoes in between, I love the people and the food, of course! I don’t think I’ll ever tire of visiting Mexico and finding new gems there. As for cities, my absolute favourite city in the world is New York City.

They have visited over 115 countries on all 7 continents and are real heavyweights in the travel space. 

Dave and Deb mostly share one picture per post and use captions to describe the location and share camera settings. The number of hashtags varies from a couple to twenty or thirty and include destinations, type of photos and travel, as well as numerous travel-related hashtags like #travelgram, #travellingtheworld, etc. It seems like Dave and Deb try to respond to comments under their posts as far as possible, or at least like them.

@emmett_sparling

Emmet helps top brands from around the world capture their vision through photos and video. On his Instagram profile with over 800k followers, you can find a collection of breathtaking pictures from his explorations all over the world. By sharing his travel experiences with the audiences, Emmet is making his living as one of the fastest-growing Instagram travel bloggers.

Emmet shares carousel and single-picture posts, as well as video clips, reels, IGTV videos and travel guides, featuring a series of publications for the same destination, like India, Europe, or Canada. As for hashtags, he mostly posts them in the comment section and in a large number, about 20 on average.

Madeleine is a commercial pilot and a travel blogger with over 1.3 million followers. She fills her feed with vibrant and perfectly styled pictures of her latest discoveries and travel experiences. On average, Madeleine shares a couple of posts per week.

On average, he publishes around 3-5 posts weekly. Christian uses captions to share personal thoughts, experiences from his trips or introduce events in his Creator Academy.

This is a travel community aimed at inspiring and educating female travelers all over the world. It brings together travel tips and inspiration from various bloggers, and you can find new content uploaded almost on a daily basis.

The community uses a lot of hashtags to drive traffic – 10 to 20 on average. There are mostly single-image and carousel posts, but you can also find reels, IGTVs and travel guides uniting several publications under the same topic. In captions under each post, you can find a link to the blogger who shared the picture, description of the place and travel tips and hacks. Make sure to tag the community if you’re a female traveler striving for media attention.

@Taramilktea

Tara Whiteman is an Australian travel blogger sharing her favorite finds to over 1.4 million followers on Instagram. A distinctive feature of her account is that publications are beautifully arranged through a kaleidoscope of color, passing from yellow to peach to blue and so on. One of the top Instagram travel accounts, Tara will teach you how to travel in style and live life to the fullest.

Tara shares a lot of reels and some IGTV videos in addition to single-image and carousel posts. She often talks about her travel experiences in destinations and promotes beauty and fashion brands in captions. Hashtags are not a mandatory element in her promotion strategy, although you may encounter a couple of them for sponsored content.

@Finduslost

Selena Taylor is a travel photographer and blogger from Amsterdam. In 2016, she left California for a road trip, which grew into life-changing adventures. Twelve countries and six thousand kilometers later she started the Find Us Lost travel blog to share travel insights, photography, unique destinations and much more. Now, as Selena is based in Amsterdam, you can find a lot of Amsterdam pictures in her Instagram account, as well as some of the world’s most captivating cities, blissful beaches and lush florals.

Selena shares a lot of carousel posts and reels, and in captions, she often announces upcoming blog posts and travel guides. There are between one and eight hashtags on average under Selena’s posts, such as location hashtags or inspiration hashtags. Selena also uses her branded hashtag #finduslostpresets to introduce lightroom presets.

@Muradosmann

Murad Osmann is the mastermind behind the “Follow me” photo series with the iconic hand-holding pose. He is also a film producer, having over 3.7 million followers on Instagram. Together with his wife Natalia, Murad chronicles the world’s most beautiful things and has made it to the list of the top three travel influencers by Forbes.

Murad mostly shares single-picture posts, but there are also carousel posts and reels. He uses captions to describe locations where the photos are shot or share travel experiences. Apart from #followme, Murad doesn’t use many hashtags, just to mention a location or a social campaign from time to time.

@Theprettycities

The community @theprettycities is one of the best travel Instagrams to tag if you’re sharing a picture taken during a city break. If not, the community will add numerous cities to your bucket list. You’ll find photos from different instagram travel influencers, featuring must-go restaurants and quaint streets from various cities across the globe. 

The account features solely single-picture posts, and in the captions, you can find a link to the photo’s author, a short description of a place and a couple of hashtags, including the branded hashtag #theprettycities. In the same vein, you can explore the world’s most popular places from every angle with dedicated travel Instagram accounts @prettycitiesnewyork,  @prettycitylondon, and @prettycitiesdublin_.

@Theslowtraveler

Carolyn, the blogger behind The Slow Traveler with almost 500k followers on Instagram, shares photos of beautiful outdoors in England in a very atmospheric and cohesive compilation. Carolyn doesn’t post often, just four to five times per month, although each post is gaining numerous comments. In the captions, she shares travel experiences, famous quotes, place descriptions, and so on. In contrast to other bloggers, she barely uses hashtags, only for a few posts.

@Thecommonwanderer

If you are looking for an escape from a new reality flooded with COVID news, take a look at @thecommonwanderer, one of the top travel influencers with over 500k followers on Instagram. This is also an award-winning travel blog for travelers seeking authentic experiences in different destinations around the world. 

Adventures that first started with a one-way ticket to Singapore brought Mark and Mim, the masters behind @thecommonwanderer, to over 30 countries, including remote destinations like the Himalayas in Nepal, the temples of Bagan, Namibian sand dunes, and Cambodian jungles. Mark and Mim put them at your fingertips to lust over and make you wish you were right there with them.

On Instagram, Mark and Mim share a lot of reels and carousel posts. The posting frequency varies from a couple to over a dozen posts per month, depending on whether they’re on the road. In captions, you can find a lot of travel tips and tricks to make perfect shots. Notably, Mark and Mim take time to respond to every comment users leave under their posts.

Emily is a travel blogger who shares amazing pictures of many far flung destinations. She is also a co-founder of @seattleinsiders and is setting social media feeds alight with images of Seattle of over 100k followers on Instagram.

In the captions, Emily shares her travel experiences, shooting tips, her own reflections, and so on. She is not a frequent poster, with only a couple of posts uploaded on the platform each month. Emily mostly shares single-picture posts, but there are a few carousel posts every now and then. As for hashtags, Emily either adds a couple of them in captions or uses about 20-30 of them in the comment section to make captions look tidier. She uses a lot of travel-related hashtags like #travelstoke, #followmefaraway, #justgoshoot, and so on.

This amazing account with almost 2 million followers shares photos of a hedgehog Mr Pokee traveling around the world. The idea behind the account was to remind people that there are always reasons to be happy and smile even among all the serious things taking place every day.

Captions are rather short, with a few long stories every once in a while. Not all posts have hashtags, and their number varies from a couple to over a dozen. @mr.pokee is one of those travel accounts that will captivate you for hours on end, with photos of beautiful destinations and stories about adventures of a cute little hedgehog.

Ali Alsulaiman is an award-winning photographer with a passion for luxury traveling and a medical doctor who quit his clinical practice to become a full-time traveler. Saudi-born and now London-based, Ali has made it to the top ten Instagram travel influencers , having over 30k followers on the platform. On his account, you can find breathtaking landscapes in different locations around the world as well as pictures of luxury resorts and hotels. 

In captions, Ali describes locations, shares stories and filming conditions, and so much more. He extensively uses hashtags under each post, both in English and Arabic. These are general travel hashtags like #luxuryworldtraveler or #yachtlife, location hashtags like #londonskypool or #corfu. Ali predominantly uses hashtags in captions, separating them from the main text with spaces.

@Paulodelvalle

Paulo del Valle is a Brazilian travel photographer, based in São Paulo. He is also a co-founder and creative director at @thisiscraft, a content marketing agency. On Instagram, Paulo shares stunning pictures of destinations around the world with his 400k followers.

In captions, Paulo often shares shooting and editing tips. He mostly writes in Portuguese but sometimes also translates it into English, and seems to have a pretty strong local community, as most comments under his posts are in Portuguese. In captions to his photos, Alex describes locations and camera settings, shares travel adventures and experiences, and personal reflections. Alex likes the comments users leave on his account and responds to them. He doesn’t tag locations with some exceptions nor does he use many hashtags, apart from mentioning ad content like #ad, photo cameras like #CanonCreator or #EOSR5.

@loic.lagarde

Loic Lagarde is a travel photographer from Paris who shares unparalleled images of destinations in France and around the globe with over 170k followers on Instagram. His passion for photography grew when Loic was backpacking around Australia. Today, Loic specializes in shooting destinations and luxury hotels. He has been named the best travel influencer to follow on Instagram by Harper’s Bazaar , and his works have been featured in multiple magazines.

In captions, Loic presents the location in the picture both in French and English. You can learn about the place’s history, architectural features, how the shot was taken, and more. Loic extensively uses hashtags, over 20 in each post. To make captions look tidier, he separates hashtags from the main text with spaces. The Bucket List Family is an amazing travel Instagram account with over 2.6 million followers and a YouTube channel with over 1.3 million subscribers. A few years ago, Garrett and Jessica Gee took a leap of faith and sold everything they owned to travel the world with their three kids. They have now been to over 85 countries worldwide.

@TheBucketListFamily is a very genuine account, as Garrett and Jessica sincerely share their family adventures and mishaps. You’ll find a lot of reels and IGTV videos, as well as carousel posts, very real and vivacious. Captions length varies from one sentence to long texts, where Garret and Jessica write about their trips, parenting, and more. They use two to four hashtags on average, and only under some posts. You can find location and animal hashtags, travel-related hashtags like #bucketlist, and more.

@Jamesrelfdyer

James Relf Dyer is a UK-based travel and adventure photographer with over 260k followers on Instagram. He shares travel adventures around the world and introduces custom-made presets. James shares new posts quite often, from daily uploads to several posts per week.

In captions, James talks about travel adventures and creating pictures, promotes travel brands and shares discounts, and describes the best spots to visit in different destinations. He uses hashtags extensively, over 20 for each post, separating them from the main text in captions with spaces. They include location hashtags and also various travel-related hashtags like #passionpassport, #earthfocus, or #vacations.

@Chelseakauai

The answer is YES! Who would’ve thought like ten years ago that a platform like Instagram could eventually lead people to pursue their passion, such as traveling while earning a full-time income ? The content creators, who have some of the best travel pages on Instagram , generate their income mostly from tourism and brand sponsored content. Today, tourism boards hire Influencers with a trendsetting travel Instagram accounts to promote their country’s tourism spots.

According to a  National Geographic  report, travel influencers provide an incredible amount of investment when it comes to promoting tourism.  As a result, influencers with a big following and an aspirational travel Instagram pages get hired sometimes on a monthly basis, raking in full-time income while traveling the world. It’s a lifestyle that every aspiring digital nomad wants to achieve.  Considering the opportunities in the travel Instagram space, every wanderluster wants to emulate travel influencers who get to pay a lot of money and travel for free.  Unfortunately, many fail to realize that becoming an ‘influencer’ and having a trendsetting travel Instagram page takes a lot of work and requires a certain level of professionalism to turn this passion into a full-time career through Instagram.

Many creative travel influencers have spectacular content through their stunning travel photography and inspirational videos. With the number of travel influencers out there today, you need something more than great content to stand out. It’s about knowing the simple tips and tricks of creating a beautiful image and finding your style of photography. Once again, being a travel influencer doesn’t require you to invest money to study photography. However, it does require you to study the basic rules of photography and find a style that works for you. For example, every travel influencer I know is familiar with the rule of thirds, where the basic idea is NOT to place your subject and focus on the center of the image.

Another photography basics are lighting, where travel influencers mostly shoot during a specific time of day (mostly in the early morning) to have the softest lighting possible.  Apart from learning the basics of photography , many travel influencers use Presets to improve their pictures. These days, it’s pretty rare for a travel influencer not to have a preset of their own that they sell so that you can easily copy their feed. If you prefer not to spend money on presets, you can still improve your pictures by knowing some tips and tricks on how to improve  Instagram filters .  Lastly, taking exceptional photos also doesn’t mean having the fanciest and most expensive equipment. For us, we do use a professional camera that helps us create some of our best content. However, there are also moments where a picture looks just as great as using an iPhone. 

Take Great Videos

Mastering Videos is another medium that travel Instagrammers need to master. We especially like to take videos on our travels and make it a point to post on our feed. Videos allow us to capture our experience on our travels better than images can. Editing is one of the necessary skills in creating a powerful Instagram travel video. Great editing would quickly tell a story and draw your viewers to keep watching the video. Focus using some of your best shots on the first five to ten seconds of your video to ensure you captivate your audience’s attention.  Consider using video editing apps such as Adobe Premiere Pro , or edit videos directly on your phone with apps such as Videorama . Both of these editing apps are user friendly and easy to follow and master. 

After you’ve mastered the editing portion, the next step is selecting the right music that goes along well with your travel videos.  Some of the equipment to use to build our Instagram travel pages are drones, a professional camera, and an iPhone. We especially love drone shots because it allows us to capture certain angles that would otherwise be impossible. Professional cameras can capture quality videos as well and are high on the ground level. Lastly, iPhones are also excellent quality for capturing videos for stories.

Travel Instagram Stories

Instagram stories are, without a doubt, one of the platform’s popular outlet.  Considering that editing photos and videos take time, posting on Instagram stories about your travels allows you to give a preview of what’s to come. For us, we rarely post our content on our feed immediately following our travels. The amount of time it takes to edit a video and photograph just takes too long. 

As a result, content creators use Instagram stories to share their content immediately. The posts are typically instantaneous and don’t require editing effort. Instagram stories also allow their followers to get an instant glimpse of their travels, and allow content creators to document everything that is happening during their travels and share them with their followers. It’s fun and a great way to interact with your followers. Instagram stories are such a powerful medium to take your travel Instagram to the next level because it allows you to go off-brand. Regardless of being a travel influencer, posting content not related to travel is entirely acceptable and won’t be seen as ‘weird.’ Posting content not related to your niche allows you to show off a little bit about yourself and other things that your followers can relate to.

Use Hashtags

Travel Instagrammers who get hired for paid travel campaigns, the use of hashtags in almost always part of the deal of the job. It means that for every post we make about the travel campaign, we have to use that specific hashtag related to that campaign.  Using hashtags can make a difference in getting your content discovered and ultimately land on the explorer page. The hashtag allows Instagram to identify people who are not following you but may be interested in your topic. In other words, you could be gaining a lot more followers if you use hashtags correctly.  So use hashtags effectively, whether on your feed posts or stories, chances are your content will reach a new audience you’ve never had before! 

Collaborate with Other Travel Influencers

Part of the job of travel Instagrammers is to network off Instagram.  Not many realize that part of the hustle is to meet other travel Instagrammers and collaborate on creating content. They tend to tag each other on stories and on static posts, which creates an opportunity to be introduced to a brand new set of audiences and grow their accounts.  For us, the best part of meeting other travel Instagrammers is getting an opportunity to be invited to other travel campaigns. If a travel campaign is looking for 15 other content creators, you can potentially get an invite your new travel Instagrammer friend endorses you to be part of the campaign.  Collaborating with other travel influencers also allows you to learn from each other. There are so many creative strategies and knowledge that influencers can share with each other – from little tricks on taking pictures, or how to edit videos, or possibly learning the business side of having a travel Instagram page – networking with other influencers is a crucial part of their growth in the business. 

Starting a Travel Instagram Hub Account 

Many might be surprised to know that you can still start a travel Instagram account even if you don’t have a lot of personal travel content to post.  You might have just said ‘How?!’ Many Instagram travel pages are created to repost other travel content creators. It’s a curated travel page where they repost other travel pictures or videos while giving credit to the original poster. It’s a great strategy to build your travel content and followers in the beginning if you don’t have a lot of travel-related content to post yet.  Some of the Instagram accounts that are travel hub accounts that you should check out our @theglobewanderer , @welivetoexplore , @beautifuldestinations , and @earthpix to name a few.  The travel hub accounts mentioned amassed followers in the millions, and followed by some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, both in the US and abroad.

Take Your Best Ever Photos on Vacation: The Essential Gear You Need

From cameras and filters to bags and tripods, this is the gear you should take for pro-standard travel photos.

Vacations can provide amazing opportunities for gorgeous travel photos, whether you're jumping on a jet to a tropical island, hiking into the mountains or spending a long weekend away in your local countryside. And with powerful cameras stuffed into phones like the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Galaxy S24 Ultra , along with a plethora of  amazing mirrorless cameras from the likes of Canon, Sony and Fujifilm, getting great images doesn't mean hauling a huge kit bag with you. 

I've been a professional photographer for over a decade and have traveled the world taking photos. Here, I'll take you through the essential gear you need to bring with you on your trip. I'll also recommend some extras to consider if you want to return home with creative pieces of art, rather than just holiday snaps.

Choose the right camera

While you're unlikely going to buy an entirely new camera system just for an upcoming trip, if you're in the market already for a new camera then an imminent vacation is a great excuse to invest. While traveling with a camera used to mean hauling a bulky DSLR in your backpack everywhere you go, modern mirrorless cameras are typically much smaller and lighter, making them superb for traveling. I took just my Canon R5 and a small, lightweight 50mm f1.8 lens on a three-week trip to Sicily and loved the shots I got from this compact setup.

The R5 doesn't come cheap, nor is it the smallest camera around, but it offers stunning image quality from its full-frame sensor, amazing video skills and has pro features like in-body image stabilization. Want something a bit smaller? Look towards a micro four thirds camera like the Fujifilm X-S10 or the fixed-lens X100VI. Keeping your lens choices to a minimum will help reduce the weight. A standard zoom like a 24-70mm gives a great range for capturing wide, sweeping vistas, while providing enough zoom to get closer up on your subjects. I'd also recommend packing a small prime lens (like the 50mm f1.8) as these tend to be lightweight and compact enough to always have in your bag or slung around your shoulder for whenever inspiration strikes.

But maybe you don't need a camera at all -- today's top phones can take amazing images and can shoot in raw format allowing for the same sort of editing you'd typically do with images from regular cameras. The iPhone 15 Pro Max takes gorgeous images -- especially using Apple's ProRaw format -- and its multiple rear lenses give creative shooting options for whatever scene you find yourself in front of. 

Canon's EOS RP offers full-frame quality but in a very compact size, particularly when paired with the tiny 50mm f1.8 lens.

The best travel tripod

A tripod certainly isn't essential for all travel photography, but when the light fades and you need to slow the shutter speed to several seconds to get a good exposure, you'll need one to secure your camera. You'll definitely need a tripod if you want to nail those nighttime shots overlooking a gorgeous bay, capture the stars above those snowcapped mountains, or pull off those artful long exposures of waterfalls.

By using a sturdy tripod, I was able to slow the shutter speed right down to capture the motion of the water and clouds over the Forth Bridge.

Again, size matters and you should look for a compact, travel tripod that can easily fit in your backpack -- or attach to the outside of it. Modern materials like carbon fiber will keep the weight down, but they also tend to be more expensive, so you'll need to decide how much you're willing to shell out. 

As its name suggests, the Peak Design travel tripod is a great tripod for traveling, thanks to its small size when folded down and its light weight. I've done all-day hikes with this strapped to my back and barely noticed its presence -- something I can't say for most tripods. A proper adventure backpack

A dedicated photo bag should be high on your list. After all, you don't want your fancy new gear getting knocked around and breaking, do you? A good bag will have compartments to keep your camera safe and secure, but will also let you access it quickly. It's important, too, to find one that also has plenty of space to keep other items you'll need while out and about.

If you're going to be out with it all day, I recommend a backpack with two shoulder straps, rather than a single-strap messenger bag. It'll spread that weight over both your shoulders and keep you comfortable longer. Look for things like side-access zips, so you can quickly get your camera out when inspiration strikes; plenty of additional pockets for batteries and snacks; weather-resistant materials; and mounting points to help carry your tripod.

Always keeping your camera handy means you're ever ready to shoot when you see a good opportunity.

The important extras

The list above is really the essential stuff you'll need to take with you. How much more you bring will depend on how seriously you take your photography and the sort of images you hope to take. Those of you going on wildlife safaris, for example, will benefit from packing a big telephoto zoom lens. Always consider having multiple spare batteries and a charger, as even the best cameras will tend to give you only a day of photos. There's nothing worse than getting to a beautiful afternoon destination only to find you exhausted your power in the morning. Keeping a spare in your bag will let you swap it out and keep on shooting into the evening.

The same goes for storage. It's easy to take hundreds of raw images a day in a beautiful location and all those shots can quickly fill up your card. Thankfully, SD cards are pretty cheap these days, so it's worth buying a few 64GB or 128GB cards to keep with you. 

Then there's the wide array of photographic filters that may help you get certain shots. A circular polarizer can be used to help make blue skies more vivid, or reduce the reflection on water, while a neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to use long exposures to blur the motion of water, cars or people. 

By using a neutral density filter, I was able to blur the motion of the water until it became a smooth and silky surface.

If you want to shoot video on your travels, you may need additional equipment, such as microphones, higher-capacity, faster storage cards and perhaps even video tripods or gimbals for smoother, professional-looking footage.
