With Blues Brothers Con, Dan Aykroyd tries to ‘purge’ the bad karma from Joliet prison

Aykroyd and jim belushi will team up to perform at the fest, which also features local blues music and a re-creation of chicago’s maxwell street market..

Jim Belushi (left) is set to team up with Dan Aykroyd for a Blues Brothers performance Friday at Old Joliet Prison.

The Blues Brothers are throwing a party in the county jail. The prison band will be there as they begin to wail.

Everybody in the whole cell block of Old Joliet Prison, the historical site located in the decommissioned Joliet Correctional Center, will be dancing to the jailhouse rock on Friday and Saturday for the first Blues Brothers Con. The event features a collection of local blues music, a re-creation of Chicago’s Maxwell Street Market and a performance from the Blues Brothers themselves, featuring original members of the band.

Dan Aykroyd, who played Elwood Blues in the 1980 film, will be there, and filling for the late John Belushi, who played “Joliet Jake” Blues, will be Belushi’s brother Jim. Other featured artists include Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, Curtis Salgado and the Lewis University Gospel Choir.

Old Joliet Prison closed in 2002 after 144 years, and in 2013, Greg Peerbolte, chief executive of the Joliet Area Historical Museum, began receiving nearly daily inquiries from visitors around the world who were interested in checking out the prison, aka the temporary home of “Joliet Jake.” It made sense, he says, to begin offering tours of that historic penitentiary.

“Having grown up in nearby Kankakee with family in Joliet, I was vaguely aware of the property, but the sense of history, awe and fear that the structure instilled simply by standing outside of it was profound,” Peerbolte says.

Blues Brothers Con maintains a focus on Joliet and celebrates the music and culture that made the film possible.

“What we want to do is draw attention to the tourist attraction — a place that is a monument to penitentiary architecture — and recognize the karma that has to be purged out of the place,” Aykroyd says. “We do it with music, fun and laughter that we’re going to be having there on Friday and Saturday. [Plus], stimulus of the local economy is a big part of this, and it’s a reason to do this on its own.”

The idea for the film originated as a Belushi/Aykroyd sketch on “Saturday Night Live” in 1978. But before that, in 1974, Second City’s Chicago and Toronto branches conducted something of a foreign exchange program: The Chicago cast spent time performing in Toronto, and the Toronto cast — featuring comedy luminaries such as Aykroyd, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy — called Chicago their sweet home for the summer.

Aykroyd, a blues fan, fell in love with the tunes he heard at Kingston Mines and other influential blues clubs in Chicago. He shared his Chicago blues fascination with Belushi when the two were cast members at “Saturday Night Live,” and the idea for the Blues Brothers was born: two delinquent musicians, sporting their signature suits and sunglasses, who eat, sleep and breathe the blues.

They recruited Tom Malone, a member of the “SNL” band who would later become the show’s music director, to produce arrangements of some popular blues and R&B songs.

Lorne Michaels, “SNL’s” longtime producer, was initially skeptical the Blues Brothers would delight and electrify the audience. It took Aykroyd, Belushi and Malone three tries before the group made it to air. Their renditions of “Hey Bartender” and “Soul Man” propelled them into the hearts of viewers, and the film followed thereafter.

Malone, whose high school nickname “Bones” was resurrected for the film by Belushi in an early rehearsal, was able to contribute a bit of his experience to the film, as well.

One of the most iconic scenes occurs in a sleazy club and features the Blues Brothers performing in a cage of chicken wire to avoid being beaned by flying bottles; the sequence is based on what Malone encountered while touring through Mississippi. He recalls the cast playfully smashing these prop bottles over each other’s heads between takes.

These days, Malone plays with Lt. Dan Band, fronted by former Chicagoan Gary Sinise, and in the past has occasionally toured with Aykroyd and Jim Belushi for Blues Brothers reunion gigs.

For Blues Brothers Con, “it’s going to be nice to play with Jim and Dan again,” he says. “I just want to walk on stage and have a perfect show.”

Blues Brothers Con also will feature a gospel music service and an art gallery housing work repurposed from the prison’s damaged areas. Aykroyd hopes it becomes an annual event and feels folks of all ages have a lot to gain by attending.

“This is about fun — music, laughter, food, camaraderie and celebrating Chicago,” he says, “and what blues and African American culture brought to the world.”

Dan Aykroyd & Judith Belushi Present

The duo, comprised of Kieron (Elwood Blues) Lafferty and Wayne (Jake Blues) Catania, were hand-picked by Aykroyd, Belushi Pisano and original Blues Brothers Musical Director, Paul Shaffer to carry the torch first lit by the iconic duo of Aykroyd and John Belushi on Saturday Night Live in 1978 and later immortalized in the eponymous blockbuster 1980 film directed by John Landis.

Judy Belushi, referring to the duo as anything but an imitation of the original act said, “Kieron and Wayne are not imitators, they live the music and embody the characters. They understand the spirit of The Blues Brothers and revel in the joy of being Jake and Elwood”. Backed by the all star Intercontinental Rhythm & Blues Band, The Official Blues Brothers Revue is a multi-media interactive experience showcasing their undeniable talent in songs that comprise a virtual encyclopedia of rock, blues and soul. Audiences of all ages have been on their feet as the duo delivers classics such as “Soul Man,”, “Gimme Some Lovin,” , “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Shout.”

One critic recently raved, “…the roof raising show has the same down home energy as any of Aykroyd and Belushi’s performances. Lesser performers might be tempted to allow their characterizations to veer into parody—but not Catania and Lafferty, baby!”

All of the Blues Brothers classics: soul man, rubber biscuit, chicago, peter gunn gimme, rawhide, sweet home, some lovin & more...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y — The stage will sparkle and the lights will shine when the curtain goes up at the St. George Theatre Saturday, May 7 during a benefit concert featuring The Blues Brothers, with Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi, as they celebrate The Blues Brothers 40th anniversary and the St. George Theatre’s 92nd anniversary.

For one night only, original “ Saturday Night Live” cast member Dan Aykroyd will be back as Elwood Blues, joined by Jim Belushi as Zee Blues, in their only New York City appearance in 2022.

Prior to the concert, the St. George Theatre will bestow its very own “Georgie Award” to Kevin and Tim Mannix, the father and son owners of the Mannix Family Markets which operate Staten Island’s three ShopRite locations, for their community service and continued support of the St. George Theatre.

Together, Elwood and Zee bring the magic of the legendary Blues Brothers to life, backed by The Sacred Hearts. The evening of singing and dancing will bring back hits from the official Blues Brothers like “Soul Man” and “Sweet Home Chicago,” plus classic tunes.

“We are beyond thrilled to welcome the iconic Blues Brothers to the St. George Theatre as we celebrate the great strides we have made over the last two years”, says Doreen Cugno, president and CEO and co-founder of the non-profit theatre. “This event is such an important fundraiser for us as we continue to fulfill our mission of both restoring the historic theatre and offering the Staten Island community a wide variety of programming. And all of this would not be possible if not for our generous supporters.”

“The Mannix family have been generous supporters of the St. George Theatre for well over a decade, and we couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor,” says Luanne Sorrentino, co-Founder of St. George Theatre Restoration, Inc. “We look forward to celebrating the Mannix family and the St. George Theatre in grand style with The Blues Brothers on May 7!”

The 92nd Anniversary Benefit Concert builds upon the legacy of the theatre’s annual Red Carpet Gala, which has been the principal annual fundraiser for St. George Theatre Restoration Inc. since it was founded in 2004.

Past gala performers have included Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Jay Leno, Pink Martini, Galt MacDermot, Neil Sedaka, KC & The Sunshine Band, Martin Short, Huey Lewis & The News, The O’Jays, and Michael McDonald.

Tickets for the concert range from $79 to $179 via Ticketmaster or the theatre box office and it’s not too early to reserve.

Sponsorships and sponsor tickets begin at $500 and include prime seating for the concert, inclusion in print program, electronic journal ad, and after-party with open bar, food, and live music by John Castellano and Good N’ Plenty.

ABOUT THE ST. GEORGE THEATRE RESTORTION, INC.

The St. George Theatre Restoration Inc. was founded in 2004 by the late Mrs. Rosemary Cappozalo and her daughters Luanne Sorrentino and Doreen Cugno. The 501(c)3 non-profit organization is dedicated to the restoration of the historic theater and its development as a cultural and performing arts center for Staten Island and all of New York City by providing community outreach programs, educational programs and public performances.

The St. George Theatre opened its doors for the first time 92 years ago on Dec. 4, 1929 for a screening of the Robert Montgomery film “So This is College” and a headline live vaudeville act of husband and wife team Blossom Seeley and Benny Fields.

Since the theatre’s reopening in 2004, the St. George Theatre has played host to hundreds of headline performers such as Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, Paul Anka, Ringo Starr, Chicago, Pete Davidson, Liza Minnelli, The Jonas Brothers, Jerry Seinfeld, Joan Rivers, Patti LaBelle, The Doobie Brothers, Jackson Browne, Donny Osmond, Chaka Khan, and Peter Frampton.

ABOUT THE BLUES BROTHERS

In November 1978 Jake and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi) made their national television debut on Saturday Night Live with their breakthrough, high-energy rendition of Sam Dave’s classic “Soul Man.”

It catapulted the two “brothers” from Calumet City, Ill. to the heights of stardom. “Soul Man” sparked a national summer tour, two platinum albums and the feature film, The Blues Brothers.

Twenty-two years later, after John Belushi died, the “long-lost Brother Zee” -- and real-life brother Jim Belushi -- took on the family tradition.

ABOUT MANNIX FAMILY MARKETS

Mannix Family Markets is a member of the Wakefern Food Corp and is owned and operated by Kevin Mannix, who owns and operates three ShopRite Supermarkets.

During Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, both ShopRites were the only two supermarkets to remain open during the storm.

Mannix Family Supermarkets supports a number of civic, educational and philanthropic organizations throughout Staten Island, including the St. George Theatre, Salvation Army, Girl and Boy Scouts, food banks, and food pantries, while also including New York City Police and Fire Departments. Mannix Family Market is also the major corporate sponsor of the Staten Island Children’s Museum.=

Daily food donations of bakery products go to local food pantries and each Thanksgiving more than 3,000 turkeys are donated to help those in need on Staten Island. The dedication to help the hungry, is also evident as ShopRite customers regularly contribute to “Partners in Caring,” and “Check Out Hunger,” along with weekly donations to non-profit organizations.

Live reviews

The Blues Brothers have become a bit of an institution after the infamous film of the same name was released in 1980. Staring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, the film has gone down in history as one of the most memorable comedy films ever, and a large part of the films success was its sound track! The film included performances from music legends Ray Charles, Arentha Franklin, James Brown and John Lee Hooker! Unbelieveable right?

They have carried that over to their live performances and with all the classic hits from the Blues Brothers Catalogue such as Soul Man, Rubber Biscuit and Sweet Home Chicago, they can certainly get the party going! With the help of an all star band and their infectious energy and sense of humour they are simple stunning as a live act. I was lucky enough to see everyone having the time of their life, from children to their grandparents! They are an experience for the entire family! The boys humour and mischief is so entertaining, and when you throw that in with an unbelievably talented band, a whole host of up beat, feel good songs, and an audience happy to dance and have an amazing time you can’t go wrong! Truly an amazing experience! Not to be Missed!

“Since the Museum began operations in 2018, the Old Joliet Prison has become a pilgrimage site for Blues Brothers fans from around the world,” said Greg Peerbolte, CEO Joliet Area Historical Museum. “We are honored to work with Dan Aykroyd, Judy Belushi Pisano and the Belushi family to preserve the cultural contributions of one the greatest films ever made. Blues Brothers Con will also help to repair the effects of the worst aspects of the Prison’s history by partnering with nonprofits and local faith-based organizations that support reentry and restorative justice initiatives.”

Throughout the two-day Blues Con festival, Blues Brothers fans can expect live musical performances by blues legends including Chicago’s Toronzo Cannon and Curtis Salgado , for whom the iconic film’s character ‘Curtis’ is named. Saturday, Aug. 20th will feature an ecumenical Gospel music service led by Joliet-area faith based and civic leaders, followed by the sounds of seasoned Chicago blues veterans Mondo Cortez & The Chicago Blues Angels , Dave Weld & The Imperial Flames , and Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials .

The Blues Con experience will also feature Bob’s Country Bunker, a Bluesmobile car display area, the Maxwell Street Vendors Market, and some classic ‘Orange Whips,’ made famous in the film. A free public screening of the Blues Brothers movie will conclude the festival Saturday night.

It is now more important than ever that we recognize, venerate and celebrate the unduplicable positive impact African American culture and blues music have contributed to the world. This is what the Blues Brothers were all about and Blues Brothers Con carries on that mission with dedication and commitment. Judy and I are grateful and look forward to an outstanding weekend of fun, food and celebrating everything that is blues music. Dan Aykroyd

“I’ve wanted to do this for years,” said Judith Belushi Pisano. “I’ve lived in the Blues Brothers world for over 40 years and the mission to embrace blues music, share music and support live music remains constant. This festival is the perfect format for fans to embrace the blues and I can’t think of a better venue to host this event than the Old Joliet Prison. We intend to create an atmosphere reflective of the beautiful Chicago Blues culture, with music, food and artwork. Our goal is to craft a fun and uplifting experience that will leave people wanting more.”
