Iron Maiden Kick Off ‘Book of Souls’ World Tour: Videos and Set List

Iron Maiden started their Book of Souls world tour  last night in Sunrise, Fla., and we've got plenty of fan-shot footage to prove it.

The set list, which you can check out in its entirety below, kicked off with "If Eternity Should Fail" (see above) — one of an impressive six tracks pulled from the band's new double album The Book of Souls .

Before taking the stage, Maiden debuted their show's opening video, an animated intro clip that plunges the viewer into the jungle, where the band's brand new Ed Force One plane has been trapped by vines and can't take off — at least, not until it's been given a rather large helping hand. You can check that out here.

The band's been taking extra care to reach out to the fans at home as the Book of Souls Tour begins, posting a slew of behind-the-scenes Periscope videos to their Facebook page — where they also unveiled the set list, one song at a time, with individual graphics for each number. Those planning on attending a stop (or two, or three) on the tour can plan their merch purchases while taking a look at this sneak peek at the booth.

Iron Maiden will continue the Book of Souls Tour when Ed Force One touches down in Tulsa, Okla., for their Feb. 26 stop in town. The band remain in the U.S. until March 1, when they begin a leg that takes them through Mexico and South America; they're presently scheduled to return to the States on March 30 for a show at Madison Square Garden that begins a run of U.S. and Canadian dates. Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson Plays First Solo Show Since 2002: Set List and Video

The story behind Iron Maiden's The Book Of Souls: their most ambitious album ever

Bruce Dickinson wins the fight of his life as, 40 years after crawling out of London’s East End, Iron Maiden go Mayan on their epic double-album – The Book Of Souls

The story behind Iron Maiden's The Book Of Souls: their most ambitious album ever

As had now become almost the norm, Iron Maiden followed The Final Frontier’s cycle with another set-piece tour, with the Maiden England World Tour harking back to the 1988 live video of the same name. This included a record-breaking fifth headlining appearance at Donington, another headlining slot at Sonisphere, and the biggest ever show by a British band in Chile, to a reported 60,000 fans.

And if they weren’t already spectacular enough, they started the Download show with a Spitfire flyover, while for Sonisphere, Bruce joined the Great War Display Team for an aerial World War I dogfight display over Knebworth.

It was the singer who revealed that the band were planning a 16th album. The Book Of Souls was recorded towards the end of 2014 but its launch was delayed to allow Bruce time to recover from the removal of a cancerous tumour.

When Steve Harris sat down with Kerrang! prior to the The Book Of Souls’ release in September 2015, he revealed that the album had been recorded before Bruce had been diagnosed.

“There was no inkling of any of it. He’d finished all his vocal bits completely anyway, and then there were some other bits and pieces we were doing. Really, we didn’t know anything – he didn’t show any signs at all. I mean his singing, when you hear it… He’s singing better than ever.”

The singer himself told us that he’d sensed that he might have cancer “but I put it to the back of my mind until we’d finished the album”. Which takes dedication to the cause way beyond the next level.

As soon as they’d finished, Bruce contacted a GP and was sent for a round of tests. When he got the diagnosis, with two tumours found on his tongue, one of his first thoughts was how it might affect his voice.

Asked by K! if he feared that he might lose his ability to sing, he revealed, “Yeah, or I thought, ‘What if this changes your voice to such an extent you can’t sing like you used to?’ But you know, I thought, ‘If The Book Of Souls is the last thing I ever did that has that voice, I’d be a very happy bunny.’ I would be happy with this album being my voice’s last statement.”

Even without the news of Bruce’s illness, The Book Of Souls would have been a remarkable album. As the years have gone by – and particularly in the 21st century – Iron Maiden’s recorded output has grown ever more progressive and ambitious. Their most recent album is also their longest, clocking in at just over 92 minutes, although they hadn’t planned to make a double album initially.

“In a way it was purely accidental because we didn’t have any idea about the album order until we finished it,” chuckled Bruce. “So we got to about track six and I went downstairs [in the studio] to Steve and went, ‘We either stop now or it’s a double album.’”

The singer was also responsible for writing the band’s longest-ever song in the shape of an 18-minute monster titled Empire Of The Clouds. The Steve Harris-penned Rime Of The Ancient Mariner had hitherto held that honour since 1984, but the bassist didn’t begrudge handing over the ‘most epic Maiden song’ crown.

“We kind of had to shut [Bruce] off because he was going off on one with it,” Steve recalled. “I think it’s a masterpiece – I think I can say that because I didn’t write it! It sounds like Maiden but it’s totally different from what we’ve done before. It’s certainly not boring, let’s put it that way! And there are still other long songs also.”

Indeed there were. If you played Empire Of The Clouds, The Red And The Black and The Book Of Souls back to back you’d have a running time longer than the whole of The Number Of The Beast album. Empire Of The Clouds didn’t make the live set but the other two epics did and, as with their other modern-era album tours, the band were not afraid to weight the set heavily in favour of the new material.

The tour itself was something that Bruce wasn’t quite sure would happen – or how it might go if it did.

“I was pinching myself for the first few shows back, because none of us knew how it was going to sound, my voice,” he said. Having been through gruelling radiation treatment and chemotherapy he was still left with an agonising wait. “I’d left it for 10 months or so, to let it rest and try to heal itself up. Unquestionably there were some things that had changed and it was difficult. You want to know what the deal is… you just had to open your gob and see what came out. If a bag of spanners fell out you’d think, ‘Oh shit.’”

As anyone who caught them on The Book Of Souls World Tour could testify, Bruce remains one of the finest live vocalists in the world.

In the years that followed, Maiden embarked on a multi-year global trek for another themed tour, The Legacy Of The Beast . And what a legacy it is. Over four decades they’ve sold more than 100 million copies of their 16 studio albums. They’ve revelled in the glory days and fought through leaner years to stand today as one of the most successful, influential and downright magnificent bands in metal ever.

And the best thing? It doesn’t look like it’s over just yet. We recently asked Steve Harris, the man who began this whole crazy adventure, if he ever thought about retirement.

“Yeah, and I don’t like the idea of it at all!” he laughed. “We’re not getting any younger, and you’ve got to think in reality it’s got to end at some point, but hopefully that’s a way off yet.”

We’ll raise a glass of Trooper to that.

Iron Maiden announce Book of Souls world tour

Metal band return to the stage in 2016 for an extensive series of dates, including their first China show

In the months following Bruce Dickinson’s cancer all-clear , Iron Maiden have stipulated that touring would be the final part of the band’s Book of Souls campaign, until now. The metal band have announced the first run of dates for their 2016 world tour, which will begin in the US in February.

While only nine dates have been confirmed so far, the band have revealed that the Book of Souls world tour will arrive in Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica in March before Ed Force One – Dickinson’s Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet – flies into South America for concerts in Argentina, Chile and Brazil, before a trip back to the US at the end of March and then Canada.

In April, the band will perform in Japan, and then proceed on to their first shows in China, ahead of their New Zealand, Australian and South African dates. The tour will culminate in a series of European shows in the summer. “This will the first time Ed Force One has ever been used on any European Tour dates (other than Bruce’s Fan Club trips to shows) and will provide transport there for at least for the first few weeks,” a statement on their website reads.

The Book of Souls , Iron Maiden’s double album, is currently at No 1 in the UK album charts. It follows their frontman’s battle against tongue cancer, details of which he discussed in a recent interview with the Guardian.

“Hell would have to freeze over before you couldn’t get me on that stage,” Dickinson explained. “Even if somebody else had to sing and all I could do is run around and wave my fucking arms. But I don’t think that’s going to be the case. I was having a good sing-song yesterday and thinking, ‘Ooh, that’s sounding pretty good, actually.’”

The rock frontman began mixing the new Iron Maiden album in Paris with the band in December 2014 when he became aware of a lump in the side of his neck. Doctors confirmed that the cancer had been caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Studies suggest HPV can be sexually transmitted – as actor Michael Douglas addressed during a Guardian interview in 2013 , in which he blamed his cancer on cunnilingus.

“I mean, everybody goes, oh, Michael Douglas … ha ha ha, he’s been going down on the missus,” Dickinson explains, “but the truth is nobody knows for certain what causes it. I had a wobble right at the beginning, I thought: why me? Should I feel sorry for myself? And then I thought, let’s not go down the blame game: ‘Oh God, it’s the universe’s revenge for having been a naughty boy,’ or it’s this, or it’s that… No it’s not. It’s random. Shit just happens. So you deal with it. You just crack on.”

IRON MAIDEN Announces U.S. Tour Dates

British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN will open their highly anticipated "The Book Of Souls" world tour in the USA in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on February 24, flying in on their enormous Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet Ed Force One, piloted by vocalist Bruce Dickinson , carrying band, crew and stage production and equipment over 55,000 miles around the world visiting around 35 countries.

The full list of U.S. dates:

Feb. 24 - Ft. Lauderdale, FL @ BB&T Center Feb. 26 - Tulsa, OK @ BOK Center Feb. 28 - Las Vegas, NV @ Mandalay Bay Events Center Mar. 30 - New York, NY @ Madison Square Garden Apr. 05 - Detroit, MI @ Palace Of Auburn Hills Apr. 06 - Chicago, IL @ United Center Apr. 11 - Tacoma, WA @ Tacoma Dome Apr. 13 - Denver, CO @ Pepsi Center Apr. 15 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Forum

Tickets start going on sale October 8. As usual, there will be an exclusive pre-sale for IRON MAIDEN fan club members, details of which can also be found on www.ironmaiden.com along with information on how fan club members can participate in the draw to be "First To The Barrier."

Bruce comments: "We cannot wait to get back out on tour.

" MAIDEN thrive on touring and getting out to our fans, it's also what we enjoy the most.

"When we play in Fort Lauderdale, it will be 19 months since our last show at Sonisphere in the U.K. so we will be raring to go.

"On previous Ed Force One tours, we only had time to play New York, L.A. and Florida. For the world tour next year, we've made more time in order to take Ed Force One to our fans in many more parts of the country, like Tulsa where we haven't played since 1987 on the 'Somewhere In Time' tour and Tacoma, where we haven't played in 15 years, along with Vegas, Detroit, Chicago and Denver too this time round.

"We wanted to start off in Ft. Lauderdale, so we could first visit Nicko 's [ McBrain , drums] Rock 'N' Roll Ribs nearby and have a few Trooper beers to celebrate the start of 'The Book Of Souls' world tour!

"We will, of course, visit Canada too and those dates will be announced very soon!

"We haven't decided on the set list as yet and won't until we start rehearsing, but we really look forward to playing a number of new songs live, especially as the recording was so much live. However, as it's been a while since we saw you all, I am sure we will include plenty of older fan favorites too. I think the fans will be delighted by what we have in mind. We are also in the middle of creating the new show, and rest assured we are working hard to bring you all something spectacular, something with a lot of heart!!! You certainly deserve it for your patience."

Support on the trek will come from THE RAVEN AGE , the band led by IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris 's son George Harris .

IRON MAIDEN continue to be actively dedicated to ensuring their fans always have full access to the best possible tickets in the fairest possible way. Manager Rod Smallwood comments: "We are trying to ensure that our fans get the tickets they want in the prime positions without paying over the odds to unofficial ticketing agencies.

" MAIDEN get infuriated with the way fans sometimes have to pay more than the agreed ticket price at our shows. So we will, wherever possible and with the full assistance of the promoters, arrange a paperless ticketing system at least for the floor and best seated sections to try to eliminate as much of the ticket scalping and exchanges as we can. We put this into practice for North American dates since 2010 and it worked well and we received many positive comments back from our fans. The intention is with paperless ticketing that only those who actually pay initially for the tickets will get into the show so scalping is generally avoided. We are also doing everything we can to avoid any drain of tickets to the secondary ticketing sites which we feel make unfair profits from music fans.

"Finally, we are, of course, once again arranging exclusive ticket pre-sales for our fan club members so they can be quick off the mark for great tickets and will also continue to run the contest in appropriate venues for fan club members so they can be 'First To The Barrier' prior to the show. We hope that these measures will help our fans as much as possible and ask that they keep checking for details on our web site."

Ticketmaster comments: "Where possible, the North American IRON MAIDEN shows will operate a paperless ticket policy. Select tickets will be sold via Ticketmaster 's Paperless Ticket delivery (also known as Credit Card Entry),which means fans will not receive a physical concert ticket for their entry into the event. Buying paperless helps ensure fans have secure and convenient access to event tickets at the intended original sale price. On the day of show, concertgoers just need to bring the credit card they used for the ticket purchase and a government-issued photo ID to the concert. All members of the ticket purchaser's party must be present at the same time to enter the venue. The venue's ticket usher will swipe their credit card upon entry and present each person in their party with seat locator slips for quick access into the show."

To purchase paperless tickets or for more information, fans should visit www.ticketmaster.com/paperless or call the Ticketmaster charge-by-phone number at 1-800-745-3000.

Iron Maiden Kick Off ‘The Book of Souls’ Tour With Explosive Florida Performance [Exclusive Photos]

If you live in Florida and happened notice a hell-jet screaming across the state on Friday morning and a “Death or Glory” level of type of event happening in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday night (Feb. 24), you can attribute it to Iron Maiden ’s kick-off of their Book of Souls World Tour performance at BB&T Center. This year, the rockers from across the pond are bringing a live vision of their Book of Souls album to the colonies, and it’ll blow the minds of fans new and old.

Beginning with a video of ancient Mayan ruins, we see Ed Force One crash landed, wrapped in vines and as a sentient vessel trying to escape. It is offered a giant helping hand in the form of Eddie, who literally push-starts Ed Force One to soar to the sky.

Maiden blasted out from the brand-new elaborate stage set-up, an ancient Mayan temple to reflect Eddie's new look. Bruce began above the stage conjuring things up in a brewing pot to howl the first vocals of the night and kicked things off with “If Eternity Should Fail,” an intro like no one has ever seen yet, with drummer Nicko McBrain , bassist Steve Harris , and guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers ripping into the rabid crowd with searing guitar squeals, tumbling bass runs and thunderous rhythms.

“Scream for me Floridaaaaaaa!” Bruce Dickinson screamed, and Maiden fans came from near and far to do just that. Dickinson proclaimed his signature cry over and over in between performing a total of six  Book of Souls cuts. His call to action usually came in waves of three during a musical vamp in songs like “Speed of Light.” A lot of the songs in this set had not been heard live for years, especially Number of the Beast classic “Children of the Damned”

Occasionally the crowd was louder than the band, although the physical energy of the six people onstage could not be matched. Dickinson would sprint from one end of the scaffolding to the other while singing his highest notes, never taking breaks to catch his breath. Gers was the most acrobatic of the bunch, showing off his literal guitar slinging tricks and playing notes alongside the fans in the pit. Smith and Murray traded off complex solo lines while Harris ran from side to side with as much vigor as Dickinson. Performance effects special to this tour included Eddie’s live cameos in "The Book of Souls" and and another atop the back risers during “Iron Maiden,” as a living version of The Book of Souls album cover. Before the night's encore, Bruce screamed his classic war cry, "Iron Maiden's gonna get all of you!"

Closing off the set, Iron Maiden put together a unique trio of songs beginning with the live staple "The Number of the Beast." Maiden pulled out Steve Harris' tribute to his late father, "Blood Brothers," before the band tied a bow onto the set with "Wasted Years," a departure from the longtime closer, "Running Free."

To fans worrying that Bruce Dickinson's battle with tongue cancer battle took a chunk of magic out of the heavy metal legend's voice -- rest easy. Dickinson's golden pipes are very much in tact, as you can witness in the fan-filmed footage below.
