Urban Campus:

• Boston University is in the heart of Boston allowing students to quickly integrate themselves into the city filled with opportunity and adventure.
• We’re an urban campus and we love it, yet we’re not all buildings and cement blocks. The Charles River flows next to campus and there are plenty of green spaces for finding peace and quiet
• While BU is an urban campus, we’re not all buildings and cement blocks. The Charles River flows next to campus and there are plenty of green spaces for finding peace and quiet from the BU Beach to a vegetable garden on the roof of Warren Towers.
• Our newest building, the Center for Computing & Data Sciences , is a 100% fossil fuel-free building and is one of the greenest buildings in New England. It is a great example of how BU can balance space in an urban environment.

BU has the most central campus in the city of many campuses, and we are the most closely connected to the city. There's an energy to our campus and the hustle and bustle that students love.

Being in the heart of Boston allows me to explore just the multitude of resources that exist. Whether that be through sitting in the Boston Commons, using the public library to study, or just going to the museums and exploring with my friends. Being in the heart of the city allows me to connect with the communities that are in Boston itself, but also at BU in a whole.

We're an urban campus and we love it. Our Center for Computing and Data Sciences is a great example of how BU uses space in an urban environment.

Here at Commonwealth Avenue, we have a couple of different transit options. From the T which is the platform we stand on to the BU Bus, the shuttle and the Blue Bikes. This makes it really easy to get around campus and interact with the greater city of Boston, through job opportunities, internships, and just general exploratory activities.

Along with unique buildings comes beautiful views of BU. Be sure to check out some of BU's awesome views at the College of Arts and Sciences observatory, and the fourth floor garden at Warren Towers.

We have a ton of green spaces and even a river running up and down it.

BU Beach is a have beautiful versatile green space on campus. On beautiful day, students love to play spike ball or put on a game of soccer do some extra homework or even just chat and have a picnic. Our urban campus does not mean a sea of concrete buildings.

Tour Information

Beginning in Boston Common and snaking through Beacon Hill, this walking tour explores the disparate locations of Boston University's original late-19th century campus. Visitors will see the earliest homes of the School of Theology, the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Law, and even the site where Prof. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone at the School of Oratory. Paths will intersection with Boston's historic Freedom Trail and the Black Heritage Trail before turning westward into Copley Square where the College of Business Administration began. The tour will then make its way through the Commonwealth Avenue Mall and admire beautiful brownstones and hotels that have served as the University's oldest residence halls. It will move on to the site of the Charles River Campus, a cow pasture in the early 20th century, and conclude at a spot where Gothic, modern, and contemporary architecture converge to demark the University's current home.

Suggested College Tour Itineraries

Here are some suggestions for schools to visit, grouped by region, to get you rolling. Each list includes 5-6 schools that offer a range of sizes, settings and selectivity to help imagine the possibilities.  We also suggest others worth considering and why.  

Cities currently covered include Boston, New York City, Syracuse, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Suggested starting point

• Boston College
• Northeastern
• Boston University

These popular Boston area schools represent a good mix of size, setting and admissions selectivity.  All are easily accessed via public transportation, and given their relative proximity you can squeeze in two campus visits a day if necessary.  

For a taste of smaller schools in more rural locations, consider driving to western Massachusetts to visit Amherst , Williams , Hampshire College , Smith or UMass Amherst .  If you're interested in engineering, check out Olin , UMass Lowell and WPI , and if you're interested in entrepreneurship visit Babson .

Though we've contained the list to schools in NYC, it's easy to venture out into upstate NY, Connecticut, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania if you're game.  If you're interested in visiting Ivy League schools, both Yale and Princeton are within relatively easy reach by car, bus or train. Cornell is four hours away, but if you head up that way you can also visit Colgate and Hamilton to give you a taste of small, medium and large schools in rural settings.

The schools on this list offer a great mix of size, setting and selectivity. If environmental science and forestry are your thing, check out SUNY ESF , and if you have time to venture to Rochester, check out the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology .

• University of Richmond
• University of Virginia

The schools on this list are medium to large schools in suburban and urban settings. Time permitting, consider also checking out William & Mary , Virginia Tech and Washington and Lee .

• University of Wisconsin

These schools are all classic medium-large universities. For a smaller school experience, check out the Colleges that Change Lives in the area, such as Knox , Beloit , Wheaton , Wabash , Kalamazoo and Cornell College .

• University of Michigan

These schools provide a broad mix of sizes and settings. Kenyon and Oberlin exude a small school, small town feel, Ohio state and Michigan a classic Big Ten college town feel, and Case Western and Carnegie Mellon a more urban feel.

San Francisco

• University of San Francisco
• Santa Clara University

Most of the San Francisco Bay area schools tend to be larger in size, but offer great variety in terms of locale/setting. Three popular University of California campuses are within two hours: the more rural, bicycle-friendly Davis, the urban, progressive Berkeley, and the earthy-crunchy Santa Cruz.  

Los Angeles

• Claremont Colleges
• UC San Diego

These popular Southern California schools offer a good mix of size, setting and selectivity. You'll need a car to see them all, but in certain situations it's still very possible to squeeze in two campus visits a day.  The Claremont Colleges— Pomona , Claremont McKenna , Pitzer , Harvey Mudd and Scripps —are particularly interesting to visit because of their setup as a consortium with distinct campuses but shared classes.

If you're interested in STEM fields, be sure to check out Caltech and Harvey Mudd. If film or animation are your thing, check out Chapman University , Cal Arts and Loyola Marymount in addition to USC and UCLA.

Our Proposed Five-Day, Jam-Packed Campus Visit, Itinerary

Please note that this condensed itinerary allows for brief visits to each college, so checking the tour schedules, booking accommodations in advance, and being prepared for a busy schedule is essential. If you have specific colleges you prioritize, consider adjusting the itinerary accordingly.

Day 1: Arrival in Boston

• Arrive at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
• Check-in to your accommodation near Tufts University.
• Evening: Explore the local area around Tufts and have dinner.

Day 2: Tufts University & Babson College

• Morning: Take a campus tour of Tufts.
• Early Afternoon: Check out of your Tufts accommodation.
• Travel by car to Babson College (Wellesley, MA).
• Afternoon: Take a campus tour of Babson College.

Directions & Parking

BU Admissions is located at the Alan and Sherry Leventhal Center.

Public Transportation

• The Massachusetts Bay Transit System (MBTA) , Green Line B  train passes right through campus. Locals refer to the subway as the T.
• The BU East stop on the B line is the closest to our office, and approximately a 5-min walk to the Leventhal Center.
• Directions from BU East : Walk north and cross Commonwealth Avenue, then take Granby Street straight ahead. In one block you will reach Bay State Road, where you can turn left. You will then see the red awning of the Leventhal Center ahead, your final destination.

Parking on Campus

Parking at BU is limited near our visitors center. If you are driving to campus, we recommend you arrive 20-30 minutes early so you have ample time to locate parking prior to your visit.

There is no Weekday visitor parking in the CAS Lot (Lot J) at 240 Bay State Road across the street from the Leventhal Center, as this lot is reserved for those with University parking permits. 

The City of Boston has parking meters available along Bay State Road and Commonwealth Avenue near our office at 233 Bay State Road. These metered spaces are limited. If you are able to find metered parking, we recommend parking in front of buildings between 100 Bay State Road and 200 Bay State Road. Meters take credit cards or quarters or can be paid using the Park Boston app . Parking Meters are free in Boston on holidays.

For Spring 2024, visitor parking has also been made available for admissions visitors in the following locations :

On weekdays, Agganis Arena Garage (Lot A) at 925 Commonwealth Avenue (entrance behind the building via Buick Street or Harry Agganis Way). This location is a 16-minute walk from the Admissions Office in the Leventhal Center. When parking at Agganis Arena, please press the Blue TICKET button on the kiosk at the entrance and take your parking ticket. Your ticket from the Agganis Arena Garage can be validated at the front desk of our office at 233 Bay State Road at a reduced guest rate of $12. You must validate your ticket before paying for your parking. After your visit and before returning to your vehicle please insert your validated parking ticket at one of the parking pay stations (located near the elevator vestibules within the Agganis Arena Garage). Then follow the directions to make payment (credit card only) and be sure to take your paid parking ticket with you, so you may insert it at the exit parking kiosk in order to raise the parking gate. If you require assistance at entry, when paying, or at exit, press the assistance button on the top right corner of the kiosk and someone will assist you promptly. Without validation, parking is a max rate of $25 on weekdays and $12 on weekends with the exception of days and times with conflicting Arena event rates.
