This is the 13th edition of the event, and they always do it big. The cruise will take place January 16th – 24th, 2020 and it will be eight days of jazz, soul, funk, gospel and comedy.

You will set sail on the Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas.

I’m really interested in going on the Soultrain Cruise in January 2020.. I was wondering if you could see about getting some of these artist on this cruise: Jeffrey Osborn, Anita Baker, Will Downing, Maze, Whispers, O’Jays, Gladys Knight, Kem & Gregory Porter, Gerald Albright, Stevie Wonder, etc…

I do not personally book the artists, but I will definitely pass along your suggestions!!

I’ve done this cruise before and had a great time but the long lines could be avoided if some sort of ticketing or reservation system was used for attendees, especially on a ship as large as this one. We could get a list of the shows and sign up for the more popular ones with reserved seating. This would allow us to enjoy other ship activities before the scheduled show. Many of us spent a long time in lone for the more popular shows, missing out on other on board activities.

Capital jazz supercruise xiv refund class action lawsuit.

Sauder Schelkopf filed a class action lawsuit against Capital Jazz Productions, a company that specializes in among other things organizing music-themed cruise ship charters. It is alleged that in January 2021, Capital Jazz chartered the M/V Independence of the Seas from Royal Caribbean for an 8-night jazz-themed chartered voyage called SuperCruise XIV. SuperCruise XIV was scheduled to set sail on January 14, 2022, from Port Canaveral, Florida, but reportedly on January 7, 2022 , Capital Jazz emailed passengers who had booked the cruise, to inform them that it had canceled SuperCruise XIV.

Reportedly, a few weeks later, on January 24, 2022, Capital Jazz emailed passengers who had booked the cruise to offer them two options: (1) deferring the cruise until January 2023, or (2) a full refund. Passengers who selected a full refund have reportedly complained that they still have not received a refund of their money, some of whom paid over $5,000 for SuperCruise XIV.

“Our clients paid thousands of dollars for a January 2022 cruise that never set sail. They should have never had to file this lawsuit but they have yet to receive their promised cash refund,” said Joe Sauder of Sauder Schelkopf.

Sauder Schelkopf served as court-appointed Class Counsel in a class action settlement on behalf of purchasers of credentials for the 2020 South by South West Conference & Festivals in Austin, Texas that was canceled due to COVID-19. The court granted final approval to the settlement on February 18, 2022.

Cruise customers still seeking refunds after trip was canceled in January

BALTIMORE — Customers of a jazz cruise have been waiting months for their refunds.

Capital Jazz canceled their annual SuperCruise in January and offered guests a refund, however, many people say they still haven’t received their money.

Thomas King, Gwen Scott, and Alma Richards are all repeat SuperCruise customers.

“This was going to be our third cruise with Capital Jazz,” said King.

“I was looking forward to going in a big way because I enjoyed this,” added Richards.

But several days before their departure, Capital Jazz notified SuperCruisers that the trip was canceled due to COVID-19 and a CDC alert to avoid cruise travel. Two weeks later, the company sent an update.

“They gave us the option of either going the next year or asking for a refund. Her and I, we asked for a refund, an immediate refund,” said Scott who had booked a room with Richards.

As did King and his wife. He sent in his request on February 24. The response from Capital Jazz said refunds could take up to 90 days.

“Meaning the 24th of April. That did not happen. And it still hasn't happened,” said King.

These customers, in addition to six others who emailed WMAR-2 News Mallory Sofastaii , tried calling and emailing Capital Jazz.

“I spoke with Becky on October 21 at Capital Jazz. Spoke with Veronica on July 26 at Capital Jazz,” said King.

“Every time we call, we get somebody and they give you different stories that oh it's coming, even sometimes they hang up on you,” Scott said.

Sofastaii also called and emailed and was told someone would call her back, but no one did. And she received a generic response to her email that they're still processing refunds.

“Give me my money. I'm not asking you for any interest. I'm just asking you for the $4,645 that I paid,” said King.

Scott and Richards are also owed over $4,000. “We don't have it to shake off the tree and give it away like that,” said Richards.

In the past year, the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has received 41 complaints about Capital Jazz and there's now a class action lawsuit. According to court documents , there are more than 100 class members with the amount in controversy exceeding $5 million.

Sofastaii also emailed the attorneys representing Capital Jazz and its owner, Clifford Hunte, in a different lawsuit with Royal Caribbean, but never heard back.

Capital Jazz customer service manager Lori P. confirmed she received Sofastaii’s email and sent it to Hunte. Despite multiple follow-up emails, Hunte hasn’t yet responded.

And while some of King’s and Richards' family members were issued refunds, they can't get an answer on when exactly they'll get back their money.

“I don't want to settle for less than what I paid and I don't want to be third or fourth or fifth or sixth. I want my money upfront. I want it now,” said King.

These customers tried disputing the charge with their credit card companies, but because they believed Capital Jazz would issue a refund, they waited 90 days. They then fell outside the dispute window, which is 60 days.

And while Capital Jazz hasn’t been responsive to these customers, they are currently collecting money for their upcoming 2023 cruise.

7News On Your Side: Capital Jazz Super Cruise issues refunds after I-Team questions

WASHINGTON (7News) — UPDATE : 7 News has now heard from additional viewers who claim they are also waiting for a refund for cruises with Capital Jazz. So far the I-Team has forwarded more than 50 new names of viewers to Capital Jazz who are requesting a refund.

Capital Jazz has been around for 30 years entertaining the DMV. People love its annual Capital Jazz Fest in Maryland. Plus, thousands enjoyed its annual Capital Jazz Super Cruises until the last two cruises were canceled.

“It’s hasn’t been just a nightmare for us. It’s been a nightmare for everyone who opted to get a refund,” says Gina Kyle who lives in Jacksonville, Florida.

The 2021 Super Cruise and this year’s cruise in January were canceled due to COVID, according to Capital Jazz, which promised refunds in 90 days. But, the 90 days have come and gone.

“How much money are we talking about that you were out right now?” asks 7News Investigator Scott Taylor.

“Almost $6,000,” says Gina Kyle.

“I’m out $4,200,” said Karen Morris from Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.

“$4,239,” said Tahira, who lives in Claymont, Delaware.

One Maryland man said he's out more than $9,000.

When the 2021 Super Cruise on Royal Caribbean was canceled many who had already paid for it in October of 2020 took the option to rebook for this year’s Super Cruise.

“This is the largest amount of money I’ve ever spent to go on a vacation,” added Aaron Adams, who lives in Upper Marlboro, Maryland and is out $5,920.

On Jan. 7, Capital Jazz emailed canceling the cruise one week out saying the CDC issued a Level 4 Alert advising travelers to avoid cruises.

The cancellation led to a lawsuit filed against Capital Jazz by Royal Caribbean, which says the cruise line didn’t cancel the cruise and the CDC alert didn’t prohibit people from going on the trip.

Capital Jazz has filed a counter lawsuit against the cruise line.

Seventeen days later, on January 24, Capital Jazz emailed customers saying refunds will arrive in 90 days but it would charge a three percent deduction for any credit card payment.

Ninety days later, Capital Jazz apologized to its customers for not sending out refunds saying, “Our system wasn’t designed to efficiently process large numbers of refunds, each refund must be processed individually."

“I’m angry. I’m angry,” said Karen Morris from Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. “I’m out $4,200."

Since that 90-day broken refund promise, Capital Jazz held its Jazz Festival in June and is taking bookings for its 2023 Super Cruise.

“Totally un-transparent. Totally dragging their feet. Totally not answering the many phone calls I’ve made,” said Jayne Belanger, of McDonough, Georgia, who's out $3,600.

7News reached out to Capital Jazz and its owner Cliff Hunte. Its business address leads to a house in Clarksville, Maryland, according to the Better Business Bureau.

“This leads me with an impression that you have no intend on giving us our money back,” said Ozzie Andrews from Lanham, Maryland, who's out almost $9,048.

Capital Jazz initially gave 7News a no comment, but told the BBB in responses to more than eighty complaints:

“We received more refund requests than expected so the process is taking longer than originally planned.”

BBB records show Capital Jazz refunds to cruisers as far back as 2021.

“We really have a bad taste in our mouth regarding the lack of communication. The disrespect so we will probably not be participating on the cruise again,” said Shawn Dudley-McClure from McDonough, Georgia, who out about $5,500.

7News has given Capital Jazz a list of our viewers who were waiting for a refund and several have received one but not all.

With regard to the story that your station is planning to air today re: the canceled 2022 cruise, you stated you will be mentioning the lawsuit Royal Caribbean filed against Capital Jazz. However, you did not mention the other lawsuit Capital Jazz filed against Royal Caribbean in February 2022 over the cancellation of the cruise. The latter is actually the larger of the two suits and in the interest of accurate reporting, we wanted to make sure you were planning to include this information. According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

• The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
• Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
• Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
• The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
